Too speedy?

I could hardly believe it when last month Auckland Transport (AT) gave the green light to its proposed speed limits bylaw which will see a big group of 100km/h rural roads, including in the Franklin region, reduced to an expected 80km/h.

While that may not be a bad thing I also understand that, even lower speeds have not been entirely ruled out. Automobile Association (AA) spokesperson Barney Irvine has indicated that some 100km/h rural roads may be brought down to 60km/h or even 40km/h – ridiculous!

AT has also approved a blanket 30km/h zone for the Auckland CBD (excluding Hobson, Nelson and Fanshawe Streets, which will be reduced to 40km/h) so, I’m wondering about the effect on traffic congestion, courier deliveries and one’s general ability to get from A to B in many places. I’m also sceptical about the rate of compliance – will lower speeds just be another means for revenuecollecting?

With the changes set to take effect mid 2020, I’m hoping AT will take time to revaluate some decisions especially as consultation on its original proposal revealed that of 6000 respondents who expressed a general view, 57% were opposed, while 43% were supportive.

In addition, an AA survey of its members in rural Auckland found that 46% were opposed to the speed limit changes AT had proposed in their area, while 32% were in favour (21% were in two minds).

Perhaps these surveys indicate that a lot of people don’t approve of the changes or don’t want to see them (ironically) rushed. I for one, think some of the speed limits touted are questionable in a city already travelling at snail’s pace.

I understand that in all about 800km of roads (including in some small town centres) will also be reduced to 30km/h and that some roads which are now 60km/h could be taken back to 50km/h.

Oh, what a night!

It was all about fashion, fun and entertainment at NOW Event’s, Night of Fashion in Pukekohe last month. Local retailers showcased the latest and greatest summer styles while a Sci-Fi Victorian Steampunk cameo piece featuring the Copper Krakens, provided a fresh element to a glam show which helped raise funds for The Mind Health Project, a local centre supporting Franklin youth. Mother to Millie aged 8 years and five-year-old Mia, Gemma Rowlinson juggles family life with a job in real estate and is also a keen netball player. But she surprised herself when she committed to an ambitious and arduous trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for worldwide cancer research. Her previous trekking experience was the Tongariro Crossing.

Taking on one of the most challenging charity treks at altitude, climbing this impressive mountain took Gemma through dense tropical rainforest, moorland and scree to its highest point at Uhuru Peak. She says the experience was emotionally and physically overwhelming and not one she’d do again. However, she’s pleased and proud of her achievement which raised more than $7000 for cancer research in the process.

Gemma embarked on the trek with her 28-year-old niece, Amy Bythin, from the United Kingdom, who was raising money for cystic fibrosis.

“We were never expecting any easy parts but thought we’d ease into it gradually…it was anything but.

The going was hard from day one and that’s what we found most challenging; it pretty much kicked in from the minute we passed through the gate.”

There were 20 in Gemma’s group who were guided and assisted by a 60-strong support crew consisting of porters, chefs and two doctors.

Even so, five of the group didn’t make it to the top, including Amy. “She completed day three but then we had her stretchered back to camp because she had sort of shut down quite a bit. We let her sleep that night but she was not in a good way. She was nauseated and absolutely freezing. She had on about 10 layers of clothes but she couldn’t stop shaking and her nose was bleeding.

We called in the doctor and he made the call to bring in the helicopter the next morning to take her off the mountain. She had altitude sickness and her body just couldn’t take any more.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

Amy was flown to a hospital but after spending one night there she was well enough to transfer to the lodge where she and Gemma stayed on their arrival.

was hard to eat at that time of night but we needed to for our energy levels. We set off with our headlamps on but the going was slow and everyone was quiet.

“It was hard to go on,” Gemma admits. “Amy had always been by my side but we decided I should continue without her. She still made it to 4600 metres where the altitude was a challenge so she did really, really well. I don’t think anyone will ever really understand how much she went through to get to that point.”

“The temperature was minus 15 at the start and windy but fortunately we didn’t have wet weather to go with it. I felt that I’d been walking for a lifetime but realised it had been only two hours. That’s when it really started to get tough and I didn’t know at that point if I could make it to the top.”

Gemma was fortunate in that she overcame her altitude sickness and suffered no ill effects. “I don’t know why that was. I guess everyone is just different.”

Each morning of the five-day ascent began with breakfast followed by about a five to six-hour trek. “It was very monotonous, you felt like a robot because it was the same routine every day.”

Members of the group boosted each other’s morale by chatting and singing as they made their way to the next camp which had been set up in advance.

“The porters were worth their weight in gold. They supported us 100 per cent and carried goodness knows what on their backs every day including portaloos and a week’s worth of water,” says Gemma.

“When we reached a camp we’d usually have a nap before dinner which we ate in a big communal tent. The chef cooked the most amazing food; it was hard to believe we were up a mountain. We ate things like stews, Bolognese and other high carb meals which we needed. Afterwards we’d sit around and share our stories.”

The day before the final push to the summit, the group went to bed early and awoke at 9pm for a late dinner ready for an 11pm start. The overnight trek was so they could watch the sun rise from the top of Mt Kilimanjaro.

“I didn’t really get any sleep because I was so anxious and it

Despite falling a bit behind the group, Gemma deemed it important to keep stopping and rehydrating as often as she could even though the water in the group’s bottles was starting to freeze and they were in danger of it running out.

“I just concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other,” she recalled. “The last hour was very steep and really hard going. I couldn’t get my phone out to take any photos because my hands were so frozen. Then suddenly you see the sign for the summit ahead of you even though it’s still a fair way off. That’s when I became emotional; the tears started to flow and I didn’t know how to control them.” The temperature at the top was minus 25.

Gemma watched the sun rise with the rest of the group at the summit, hardly believing she’d completed the ascent. Then it was a quick photo call before starting to descend and get back to a safer altitude level as quickly as possible.

“At that stage the adrenalin was still pumping and I started walking fast to get back down but I soon realised I couldn’t manage it by myself. There was a lot of scree so it’s was as if your body was in ski motion but your legs couldn’t handle it.”

Amy was waiting for Gemma on her descent and joined in with the celebrations. But the happiness they felt was tinged with sadness when they learned a female porter with another group had died on the summit that night.

“I think it (death on the mountain) happens a lot more than we are told. We were advised that a reasonable level of fitness was all that was needed to do the trek. I consider myself more fit than most, I play netball, go to the gym, have a spin bike, yet it took everything I had to complete the trek.

“I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet but it’s made me want to do more outdoor things with our children.”

FANCY A HIKE? Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s tallest peak, but also the world’s tallest freestanding mountain.

The summit, named Uhuru Point, is 5895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. While most high mountains are part of ranges, such as Mount Everest in the Himalayan Mountain Range, free standing mountains, such as Kilimanjaro, are usually a result of volcanic activity.

Scaling the mountain, which is just over 200 miles from the Equator, requires no technical skills or equipment as it is a hiking peak, not mountaineering.

When early explorers reported seeing glaciers on the top of Kilimanjaro, people did not believe them as they thought it was impossible for ice to form so close to the hot, equatorial sun.

Scientists now believe that the glaciers shrank and then re-grew during the planet’s ice ages.

Around 30,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year although only half succeed mostly due to altitude sickness. Many who fail, choose to climb on the Marangu Route, which is the shortest path (five days round trip) to the peak. south | november 2019 | 11

De-plane-ing delirium Flight plans are usually a joyful project but once up in the air, things can go awry. Sometimes passengers end up with noses perilously close to a stranger’s armpit or hip-to-hip with the person from across the aisle ROBYN YOUSEF knows well the minor inconveniences of air time and also the exit madness which seems to grip everyone at the end of a flight.

While some people worry about the “recline or not to recline” dilemma or whether it’s better to have a window or an aisle seat, I find it much more perplexing mastering the art of a graceful exit when the plane has landed.

As that cute and cuddly comedian, Michael McIntyre once said it’s often like a crazy and chaotic race – the seat belt sign goes off and just as if a whistle has been blown, there’s a mad scramble to get off the plane.

I recently read that one seasoned traveller said he found the time between landing and actually being able to walk off the aircraft as one of the most frustrating aspects of flying. I think he can’t have been very seasoned!

While the exit strategy can be very uncomfortable and frustrating, surely we can all think of a helluva lot more things that annoy on a long flight – for example, that child behind you who exercises his goal-kicking skills on the small of your back every two minutes or the traveller near the window who wants the bathroom just as you have dozed off to sleep.

Nevertheless, on destination arrival most of us are excited, although sometimes exhausted with jetlag. The thought of reaching our accommodation or sinking into the comfort of our own bed teases irritatingly.

Yes, the end seems tantalisingly close, but often there is at least a 20-minute wait before stepping out into the terminal; that’s because passengers must first cope with

POLITE PROTOCOL FOR DISEMBARKING • Don’t try to push ahead of other passengers when the plane lands “de-plane-ing delirium”, that mad desire to disembark by rampaging down the aisle as soon as possible.

Of course, it’s highly unlikely you’ll reach the baggage carousel before your luggage so, why not relax in your seat until the mob disperses then saunter casually to pick up your bags?

Some people just seem to have a natural instinct to bolt. It’s a bit like those speedsters who race past on city roads but you catch up with them at the next red light.

I do understand the need to board as quickly as possible (and that’s regulated by airline staff). Securing overhead space for carry-on baggage can be difficult but on finally reaching one’s destination, why the stampede?

Those quick to rise are often left standing for quite some time

before doors are opened and the first movement off the plane is made. Excited we may be but, really, standing prematurely in the aisle just doesn’t make sense.

What’s more, it can be desperately uncomfortable scrunched up under those overhead bins. Finding yourself in such close proximity to other passengers can even prove dangerous – I once saw a fragile, elderly man narrowly escape decapitation as a hippie with a huge backpack swung around to push into the departing crush.

• Don’t speak loudly on your cell phone • If you have a very tight connection to make, flight attendants can sometimes help you move closer to the front right before landing.

• If another passenger is having difficulty lowering a carry-on bag from the overhead bin, be helpful so everyone can get off the plane safely and quickly.

Toes get stood on, elbows swing menacingly and personal hygiene products are harshly tested in this environment.

advice – as a seasoned traveller – is to sit back and read your book for a few minutes longer.

After a lengthy and tedious journey in the strangely unnatural environment of air travel, it may be hard to resist that mad, free-for-all disembarkation process. But my

Cruise ship crazy?

When the lure of the Mediterranean finally prompted SOUTH editor HELEN PERRY into saying ‘yes’ to a cruise she knew planning had to start early. A year out from her 2020 trip, one of the last two verandah cabins on board the CELEBRITY EDGE was secured and the deposit paid. Now, the journey begins!

I am not a good sailor – my Paihia hole in the rock journey end with me heaving my heart out under a stairwell, my Barrier Reef adventure saw me (and me alone) left on a resort island for several hours while husband and the rest of the passengers carried on out to the reef for a fab’ day of snorkelling, and we just won’t mentioned the Cook Strait crossing.

But those experiences have never dimmed my ardent desire to cruise – ideally on the biggest and most stable ship available!

Many of my friends enjoy cruising, some for a couple of weeks at a time, one or two for three months at a time! “You pussy cat,” they say.

It took me less that 30 seconds to say, ‘let’s do it!” In no time we were booked with a verandah cabin (mid-ship portside for good views) on a cruise liner with the kind of facilities I know I’ll love – great dining, pool, theatre, spa and more.

“You’ll be fine; these ships are wonderful; do The Med!” I was finally persuaded to take the plunge and I’m hoping to share the experience with readers when we eventually return. But, first, I’ll let you in on how this landlubber is about to turn sea(wo)man!

Last year I was treated to lunch on board the Celebrity Solstice when it was in port in Auckland – fabulous.

It certainly started me thinking, ‘I want to do this, I can do this!’

So, when man about the house began bringing home travel brochures on land tours of the Amalfi Coast and Croatia, he also suggested the Greek Islands – by ship!

“Mmm, okay, let’s look,” I agreed.

The Celebrity Edge, launched just last year seemed to be perfect, offering a 10-day return cruise from Rome, taking in Sicily, Santorini, Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Naples.

So with our itinerary in place it’s time to start thinking what to wear, places to visit and fitness – I guess we’ll be walking a fair bit on land.

With two boutique coach trips also in the mix, there’s plenty to think about but for now I’m just dreaming of living large on the high seas. Like the song says…bought my tickets, heading for fun and counting down the days because I’m cruise ship crazy!

Taylor Shrimpton – how to save a life When a family of three was thrown into rough seas off the Port Waikato Bar earlier this year, members of the Sunset Beach Surf Lifesaving and Karioitahi Surf Clubs were among those to risk their lives to save others. Surf lifesaving may be a sport in its own right but it’s not all about fun and games.

“The sport side has definitely kept up my interest but the emergency services part is also massively important to me,” Sunset Beach club secretary, Taylor Shrimpton says. “We get along really well with the Karioitahi club, which is important when we work together [on rescues]. We definitely work as one big team when we need to because lives really are on the line.”

It may be a case of all hands on deck when it comes to the ‘real thing’ but during surf lifesaving competitions, the gloves are off.

“The sport is a reward for the work that goes into patrolling and running the club. It provides great training too, keeping us fit and ready for when we’re needed.

We use the skills we gain from competing in rescues all the time,” the Drury local confirms.

Surf lifesaving also features surf sports (encompassing such

disciplines as beach sprints, swimming and ski and board events) but Taylor tends to focus on the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) events: mass rescue, tube rescue and team races.

“In a way, IRB is a motorsport so some think it’s just for petrol heads but that’s only one aspect of it.

There’s much more to it and the athletes are often heavily involved volunteering as lifeguards or in other roles with surf clubs.”

Following upcoming trials for the New Zealand IRB team later this month, Taylor and her teammate, Jemima Ferrier, will have their eyes on competitions including: Northern Region IRB Championship (January) and the NZ IRB Champs (April).

“At this year’s regionals, my team scored all golds and, as a club, we’ve won overall for the seventh year in a row, so I guess you could say we have been dominating.”

Following the New Zealand season, Taylor will be focused on more distant horizons with the Australian Surf Life Saving Champs in July 2020 and the biennial Lifesaving World Championships in Italy next September.

“Aussie Nationals are top level,

depending on where the Worlds are held. Lots of Aussie teams turned up last time [Adelaide, 2018], but when competitions are held in Europe, for example, not all the best competitors from this side of the globe will go so the level of competition isn’t quite so high.

“I’m pretty confident we’ll do well at Worlds. The last World Champs was the first time we had a New Zealand IRB team compete for 13 years or something like that. We won the overall trophy as well as four golds and three silvers so we were pretty happy about that!”

Since first diving into the sport aged 15, Taylor has become rather familiar with gold, claiming a total of 16 gold medals at national and international competitions.

“I became involved with surf lifesaving because of the social aspect; it was just something fun to do down at the beach,” she recalls. “My aunty Jacqui became a qualified lifeguard at the Karioitahi club and she got my mum [Jan Shrimpton] involved.”

Jan still competes at Masters level and Jacqui works as a swim coach at the club. Others from the family have also made waves in the sport including Taylor’s sisters, Tori and Robbie, and her cousins,

Taylor is far from the only successful competitor from Sunset Beach. Earlier this year, the club added to its trophy cabinet following the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards where it claimed titles for Club of the Year (second year running), Coach of the Year (Shane Edwards – IRB coach), Team of the Year (for Taylor’s IRB team) and more.

Such laurels may prove welcome recognition but they also play an important part in ensuring the wheels (so to speak) on the club’s boats continue to turn, Taylor contends.

“In order to compete or provide emergency services, we rely on sponsorship. Awards are great for showing sponsors how committed we are so we can have what we need to do what we do best.”

“Thanks to a population increase – with developments such as those at Pokeno – we are seeing more and more visitors at our beach over summer so we want to make sure we’re up to the task of keeping them safe,” club secretary, Taylor Shrimpton, explains. “The improvements www.southmagazine.co.nz

will allow us to have more room to store equipment and be better able to train more members so we can expand our patrols.”

Literally drawing on her expertise as an engineer (with CivilPlan Consultants in Manukau), Taylor is practically ‘tailor-made’ to pitch in with the club’s expansion.

“We started construction during winter. There is a lot involved.

We’re building a big community hall and we will be refitting the clubrooms too. I did all the engineering drawings – from the earthworks to the drainage – for resource consent. I’m also on the project steering group, helping make sure it all comes together,” she says.

Guy Fawkes is nearly upon us, heralding the start of the fireworks season that seems to go on for a very long time. While some pets don’t really seem bothered by all the fuss, there are some animals who can get quite stressed by the noise and excitement.

Here are a few ways to make this explosive night free of stress: • Never let off fireworks in close proximity to animals.

• Keep pets indoors with the windows shut and curtains closed. Have music or the TV so familiar sounds can help drown out the bangs and noise.

• Provide somewhere for your pet to feel more secure. If your dog is crate-trained put him/ her in the crate and cover the crate with a blanket. This often makes them feel more secure.

A cardboard box with a bed in it and a towel over the entrance is a great hiding place for a cat.

• Take your evening walk early to avoid having your dog out when fireworks are being set off and bring cats inside before dark.

• Try to behave in a calm and

reassuring manner. Cuddling and petting too much can provide positive reinforcement of anxious behaviour.

• Never punish pets for anxious behaviour; this will just make them more fearful and stressed.

• Try a compressive wrap for dogs such as a thunder shirt or calm coat.

• Make sure your animals are microchipped. This means if they do run away, they can be easily identified.

• 350–400g beetroot, peeled and chopped • 1/4 cup coconut oil or melted butter • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 tsp vanilla essence or extract • 1 cup (100g) ground almonds • 1 1/4 cup (100g) desiccated coconut • Finely grated zest of an orange • 3 1/2 Tbsp dark cocoa (Nadia uses Dutch cocoa) or cacao powder • 1 tsp baking powder • 5 medium free-range eggs Ganache • 85g dark chocolate, chopped • 1/3 cup cream or coconut cream • 1 punnet fresh berries, to garnish

METHOD Preheat oven to 170°C. Lightly grease and line the base and sides of a 20–21cm cake tin with baking paper.

Boil beetroot for 10–15 minutes until tender. Drain beetroot well and place in a food processor or

Pour into prepared cake tin and bake for an hour or until cake is just set. Leave to cool for at least 10 minutes before removing from tin and transferring to a cake rack, then allow to cool completely before icing.

To make ganache, place chocolate and cream/coconut cream in a heatproof bowl and melt together in the microwave in 30 second bursts, then stir until smooth and glossy.

Alternatively, place bowl above a small pot of barely simmering water and stir gently every now and again until melted. Allow ganache to cool slightly before using.

Spread ganache over the top of the cake and a little down the sides and top with fresh berries.

This light, almost sponge-like cake is one that is great as a morning or afternoon tea-type cake by itself (as it’s not overly sweet or rich), or you can make it more decadent and special with the chocolate ganache and fresh berries.

Serves 5

INGREDIENTS • 1 red onion, diced • 1/4 cup (30g) flour or gluten-free flour • 4 Tbsp (25g) ground linseed • 1 Tbsp salt • 1 Tbsp ground cumin • 1 tsp chilli powder • 1 tsp ground black pepper • 2 cans kidney beans (440g once drained) • 1 tomato, diced • 1/2 mango, diced • Fresh coriander, finely chopped (optional) • Juice of 1/2 lemon • Salt and pepper, to taste • 5 burger buns • Chipotle sauce • Relish • Lettuce • Corn chips • 1 avocado, smashed and mixed with the juice of 1/2 a lemon

METHOD To make burger patty mixture, in a mixing bowl, combine half of the diced onion, flour,

linseed, spices and kidney beans. Mix all the ingredients together by hand. Leave mixture to sit for at least 15 minutes to allow for binding.

To make salsa, in another bowl, combine the remaining diced onion, tomato, mango and coriander. Season with salt and pepper to taste and squeeze in the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Divide the burger patty mixture and form into 5 patties (about 110g each).

In a pan over medium–high heat, fry each patty for 10-15 minutes till they are crispy on the outside. Lightly toast the buns in the same pan after you’ve cooked the patties.

To assemble the burgers, place a spoon of relish on the base of each bun. Then layer the lettuce, a generous spoonful of salsa, a burger patty, a drizzle of chipotle sauce and a few corn chips.

On the top half of the bun, spread a spoonful of smashed avocado and place on top of the burger. Add bun half and serve. www.southmagazine.co.nz

‘RISING’ STAR: Some people may earn their daily bread on the shop floor but, when it comes to high end furniture design, the drawing board can also yield rich pickings.

Created by Ukrainian artist, Victoria Yakusha (working with Faina Design), the ‘Made of dough’ chair caused quite a stir at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, late last year. Victoria used valkuvannia (a modelling technique which involves the coating of a solid surface with a mixture of organic materials) to develop this rustic look.

Held together by recycled steel frames, these chairs are covered with special mixture of cellulose (recycled paper), linen, clay, wood chips and straw to resemble the appearance of dough. In addition, as they are coated with biopolymer based on corn starch, they are safe for the environment and designed to last a lifetime.

Suburban oasis –

flowers for all seasons When a planned 45-minute interview – one hour tops – lapsed into three hours and went from a garden story to house and garden, HELEN PERRY knew that Bob and Kathy Thickpenny’s penchant for many art forms was a story that just had to be shared.

In fact, a stunning 2.6 acres of mature trees, flowering shrubs, clever ground covers, pretty perennials, fruit trees, climbers and, of course, an eclectic array of garden art, doesn’t begin to describe all that Bob and Kathy Thickpenny’s garden holds.

Hundreds of different plants, blooming in all the colours of the rainbow, occupy every corner of this little Utopia.

“I can’t even name them all,” confesses Kathy. “Yes, there are plenty of well known botanicals but I’ve picked up cutting and plants from all over place and just stuck them in the ground then watched them take root and grow.”

“What’s more, they’ve grown so well, and so densely, that 14 years after moving here we are busy cutting back and even taking out some beds.”

Gardeners all their lives, Bob and Kathy haven’t had a property under half an acre, all well planted, since the early 1970’s.

“Gardens can be quite well managed if you just spend half

an hour a day plucking out a few weeds and doing a bit of pruning then follow up with a full day’s hard graft every now and then,” Kathy says.

“But, the amount of work here is finally catching up a bit.

Fortunately, I have a cousin who’s in the gardening business and she now comes in to help; that way we stay on top of everything.”

Importantly, this is a couple which knows how to work together – when it comes to the heftier jobs, Kathy tells Bob what to do and he does it.

The grand dove cote, for example, is his workmanship as are the corrugated creatures that ‘prowl’ the grounds – two elephants, a cow, pukeko and giraffes but no Simba lying amongst the bushes.

When it comes to the greenery and colour, Kathy is like a mum with too many children – “these are golden elms, and those are chestnut trees.

We have olives, palms, toon trees and karaka. Those are maples, of course, and over there is our little orchard – lemons, oranges and mandarins, avocado and feijoas, nectarines and peaches – I couldn’t keep up with the golden queens last year; I just ended up freezing the pulp for winter pies.”

As we tour the garden I spy camellia, clivias and cineraria, viola and viburnam, hydrangeas and hellebores, and colourful

pelargoniums or were they geraniums?

Kathy indicates fuchsia, orchids, ajuga, star jasmine and Chinese lanterns then – “I’m not sure where that one came from, or even what it is, but it’s definitely one of mine!

And, that is a self-sown cherry tree – beautiful isn’t it?”

But that’s not the half of it. The more one sees the more one sees – fairies swinging among the tree branches, another hidden behind a rock, ceramic birds, figurines and pots of varying sizes to add texture and surprise. Another surprise is the full size lawn tennis court, neatly mowed but barely used these days.

Indeed, this is a garden visitors will enjoy wandering. They’ll see the familiar and the unfamiliar, favourites and the ones that didn’t fit their particular garden.

They’ll also hear, and maybe see many birds, their song resounding throughout the day. What they won’t see is the view from the Thickpenny’s lounge where a huge, fixed picture window frames the garden providing a tranquil landscape that, if on canvas, could comfortably hang in a gallery.

A job too big to manage halfheartedly, Kathy and Bob explain they try to plant varieties that almost take care of themselves with plenty of ground cover to keep down unwanted weeds.

“Naturally, we both love and our proud of the gardens we’ve created. We’ve won a certificate or two and our last garden in Hill Rd, Manurewa won an unexpected accolade when it was voted Best Garden Viewed From The Road,” Bob says. “We only found out when there was a knock at the door and were told we had won!”

Although the couple have lived a goodly part of their life in Manukau, Bob was born in Pukekohe and Kathy first moved to the township when she was about eight years old.

“After marriage we moved away but coming back in 2006 was like coming home and this property has proved ideal for us, Bob says.

“About a year ago we did think about subdividing off some of the roadside land but the idea never went further.

“Now the only thing we have to think about is keeping everything in trim include the large liquid ambers lining the drive; you never know what life brings and it wouldn’t do if an emergency vehicle couldn’t get through!”

What’s more it hints at hidden ‘treasure’ beyond the black iron gates.

GARDEN HUES AN

artist’s palette There’s no doubting Bob and Kathy Thickpenny are gardeners, their botanical talents blossom in every corner of their Pukekohe property.

But it seems this pair’s artistry goes far beyond digging and planting the good earth.

Bob is clearly gifted when it comes to designing and making the fabulous corrugated iron creatures that not only adorn his garden but those of many clients. Give him a saw, tin snips and a pot of paint and this handyman’s skills are evident everywhere from the garden to framing his wife’s paintings.

“On leaving school I wanted to be a builder but life took me in other directions,” Bob says. “It wasn’t until I put a long career with Foodstuffs behind me that I really renewed my interest and started making gazebos, outdoor furniture and all sorts of other items. Eventually, this led to the corrugated iron animals. I don’t do

as much now as I once did but I still like to dabble.”

On the other hand, Kathy works from a different ilk [of tin], an artist who paints mainly with oils, favouring the detailed veins of flowers – and why not, her garden abounds with lovely blooms, an artist’s palette in itself. However, her portfolio also includes some still life and a few family portraits.

“I did art at high school and loved it but my first and last job was with former local lawyers, King Gerard and Partners which a few years ago became part of Inder & Lynch in Pukekohe.

“My 40-year career was spent in their office and it was from there I met Bob – for a time he worked next door at his parents’ music shop and regularly swept the footpath outside. We just started chatting in the street one day and things went from there.”

While she always retained her interest in art it wasn’t until a move from Manurewa back to Pukekohe 20 years ago that Kathy truly began painting again.

“I joined local artist, Paul Coney’s class initially for direction on technique but I still go every week for both the class and the social aspect. It provides a dedicated time to paint but many of the group have become good friends and we love this weekly opportunity to gather together.”

Kathy’s paintings adorn walls throughout her spacious and eclectic home. However, although painting is clearly a passion she is also something of a collector – china miniatures, exquisite dolls, endearing teddy bears and many unusual keepsakes.

“We’ve travelled a lot and naturally bought home souvenirs – some miniatures, some dolls and an array

of other items which just fall into the ‘got to love it’ category,” Kathy admits.

“And, Bob comes in especially handy when I need storage,” she laughs, pointing to hand-crafted cabinets he has made to house some of her collections.

But, Bob has been a bit of a collector too, once having a goodly array of miniature cars – “I had a lot more than now but I’ve gradually whittled them down to a few favourites. These days my biggest interest is pottering in the shed, gardening, reading and a dip in the pool!”

Between them, this in-sync couple have an eye for beauty, willing hands, and minds which appreciate the finest things in life from flowers and trees to the treasures crafted by artisans from around the world.

Having a home away from home in New Zealand may be a little trickier to arrange since changes to Overseas Investment Act, but it is far from impossible. In the 12 months since law changes (designed to restrict overseas investment in residential property), almost all applications for exemptions have been accepted.

Successful applicants are subject to ongoing monitoring to ensure obligations are met regarding such factors as visa status, time spent in New Zealand and whether they are residing in the home. Those who

attempt to break the law can be expected to face the consequences.

“We’re confident most overseas people are following the rules. If you need consent to buy a home and fail to do so we have the power to impose a range of penalties, from fines to requiring people to sell their properties,” Ms Horne adds.

“If you’re in doubt about whether you’re eligible, look at the criteria on our website or talk to us.”
