Vanuatu sun! While readers peruse this month’s SOUTH magazine, I am (hopefully) sunning myself and drinking cocktails in Vanuatu. There’s nothing like a winter escape and although days were sunny just before I left, at 3 degrees Celsius, they made the prospect of a relaxing Air Vanuatu flight, followed by seven nights at Breakas Beach Resort, Port Vila, most appealing.
he wrote: ‘Dear Mummy you are as light as a feather and as beautiful as a prancing reindeer’ and underneath ‘I love you Mum’. He had also drawn a picture of his mother walking the dog and himself on a scooter next to her; underneath were the words ‘the cycle of love’. I’m not sure about the prancing reindeer but this Blake ‘original’ certainly gave us the warm fuzzies.
Of course, being lily white, I couldn’t fly out without a spray tan and where else to go but Bloom Skin and Beauty’s new clinic at the Karaka centre (71-75 Hingaia Rd). What’s more, at my age, with the grey setting in, my snowy eyebrows were in need of shaping and tinting.
Hopefully, others also took time to appreciate the role of motherhood – it’s one that should bring great joy, humour, and abiding love accompanied, of course, by a few trials and tribulations!
With Bloom having just moved into the new complex, I was keen to check it out – perfect! There really is something to be said for personal pampering which leaves you feeling elated. However, more about that and Vanuatu when I return. Before I fly, I must tell you about the lovely Mother’s Day card my eight year old grandson made for his mother (my daughter). Inside

Great Barrier An eight hour ferry trip through stormy seas to Great Barrier Island when she was just a pre-schooler holds no memories for CARMEN BIRD, but her mother remembers the island with great fondness so Carmen decided to re-visit and experience its charms for herself. I’d long wanted to return to Great Barrier Island so when the opportunity arose recently there was no holding me back. Today the 90km trip is a lot more civilised than all those years previously – now just four hours by Sealink ferry or a quick 30 minutes by plane. We opted to fly with Barrier Air for around $180 return but I admit to being a tiny bit apprehensive about the size of the very small aircraft. However, I was soon distracted by the stunning views as we flew across the Hauraki Gulf. Then, coming in to land we had our first glimpse of the beautiful, rugged landscape as we passed over Medlands Beach and landed at Claris on the western side of the island. We were met by Steve from Go Barrier who proved to be a wealth of information about island life – he shared some very entertaining stories about the tourists, visitors and locals. Steve even arranged for us to

purchase jars of the famous GB Manuka honey at a great rate. Made on the northern end of the island, where the bees collect pollen predominantly from Manuka flowers, the honey did indeed taste better and purer (in my mind, anyway). Our home for the next few days was Tipi and Bob’s Waterfront Lodge, run by….Margery and Pete! Things are slow to change around here so the original name stays. Perched on a slight hill overlooking Pah Beach on the Tryphena Harbour, the tranquil views from our deck and the clean air meant we slipped quickly into relaxation mode. Auckland’s hustle and bustle was soon forgotten. Dumping our bags, we headed out with fishing guru, Chris from Hooked on Barrier, cruising up the coast through dazzling deep blue water before settling down to fish around the breathtaking Broken Islands. Before we knew it our group was reeling in huge snapper and a
Kahawai that gave one of the girls a good bicep workout getting it on to the boat. In the blink of an eye, Chris had filleted one snapper and had a plate of sushimi with soya sauce sitting next to a bottle of rosé – fishing can be thirsty work. A good chunk of the Barrier is made up of publicly-owned reserves and rugged native bush with about 70% of the island managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Auckland Council so what better way to explore than walking wherever we could? Subsequently, two days tramping through the glorious island wilderness with one long day on the Aotea track and up to Mt Hobson, (the highest point on the island), was exhilarating. We hiked up and up and up and then down, down through the most stunning raw landscapes to the natural hot pool where we took time to soak in the warm stream before getting back into our tramping gear and setting off again.
On the second day we headed for the east coast with its windswept cliffs and views out over a thundering ocean before ending up at pristine Medlands Beach. Rumour has it that Great Barrier has the 10th greatest walk in New Zealand but the locals prefer to keep their unique spot off the beaten tourist path so they declined the tell us where! But perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Great Barrier was its view of the sky, nothing short of spectacular in a peaceful, serene way. I now understand why the island was awarded dark sky sanctuary status in October 2017, one of only three places in the world to have this honour. There are no power stations on GB therefore all power is created via solar panels and generators. As a result there are no street lights and at night it is as black as black. Hilde, originally from the Netherlands, runs stargazing company, Good Heavens. She arrived on great Barrier as a backpacker 20 years and never left. www.southmagazine.co.nz

We spent the night with her learning about constellations, Orion, the star signs and discussing the Milky Way. We enjoyed a close up view of the stars from her impressive telescope which, because of its size, I mistook for a monumental statue. Huge it was! To keep city folk comfortable she sets them up with camp chairs, hot chocolate and homemade brownie and although our booking was meant to be two hours, she had so much to share we stayed for three. Hilde, I’m sure, could have kept going all night. We definitely picked the right weekend to have a taste of the island nightlife; the only pub on the Barrier is Irish – Curraach Irish Pub was opened 20 years ago by Phil and his Irish wife Marie – and the Saturday night just happened to be St Paddy’s Day . We drank Guinness and green tequila and danced all night to the Irish band. I was lucky enough to have my friend Carol who lives on Barrier introduce us to a few of the locals. Everyone had a story to
tell and none of them, dull – just fasinating! One local, nicknamed The Hermit, leaves his house just three times a year. He makes his own rum and has an impressive veggie garden but no fridge. On the other hand he does have a canon that he blasts every now and again. Then there’s the wealthy set with immaculate Omaha-worthy baches, predominantly at Medlands Beach. Many owners helicopter in for three weeks at Christmas. An unofficial tiki tour of some of Carol’s favourite haunts included breakfast at the Pah Café with a perfect coffee and eggs benedict. Next stop, Shoal Bay Pottery owned by the lovely Sarah. When you make a purchase she writes her bank account down on a card with the amount and you just pay her online when you arrive home – so trusting. I just had to enquire, ‘does everyone pay?’ She shrugged, laughed and said she’s not sure,
she doesn’t check her bank account very often but no stress, ‘money isn’t everything’. Sara’s place is a treasure trove of creative, quirky and just crazy stuff – an overload of the senses and so much to look at that neither my eyes, or my camera, could quite absorb it all. The wooden petrel, the driftwood fence adorned with all sorts of trinkets, the stone couches in the garden, an old motor cycle helmet on a pole (covered in decorations), spider webs, fish bones and bird bones on window ledges – the mad professor’s lab has nothing on this! The art gallery is another must see, a hub for all the creatives that live on this magical island. It’s a showcase of paintings, sculpture, pottery, photography, crochet decorations, jewellery, the Great Barrier skincare range and more. There were only a few dining establishments but enough for us to enjoy some meals out. Lunch at Fat Puku was a treat; burgers at Swallow – so good they have been on TVNZ’s Breakfast Show – and Scoff and Tackle, a bakery which
sells mouth-watering cream buns just like Mum used to make back in the day. Growing one’s own veggies and trading or sharing eggs, fish, greens and herbs is pretty much a given on the island. The pace of life took me back to when everything was a bit slower – even in Auckland – a time when we stopped and smelt the roses, breathed a bit deeper and enjoyed the simple things in life. Of course, tourism is a huge part of the Barrier’s mini economy and provides income for many of the permanent 950 residents. Yet, locals want to preserve this paradise and keep some of the commercial madness of tourism at bay. That’s a hard balance to maintain. Although visitors to the island slows dramatically in winter and most businesses shut down for several months, I’m keen to plan for a winter return – apparently the sky is even more incredible then. I can’t imagine how so I must see for myself – here’s hoping for some cloudless winter days and good flying weather!

Q&A Noel & Alison Miller With jennian homes customers
Noel and Alison Miller moved into their newly built Jennian home in Te Kauwhata just two months ago. It was their first new build experience giving them the dream home they had long wanted. SOUTH asked the Millers about their experience and the outcome. These days there are copious building companies to choose from; how and why did you decide on Jennian Homes Franklin? We visited several local building franchises and found the sales staff at Jennian the most welcoming; nothing was too much trouble. They weren’t pushy or wanting us to sign up there and then. Instead, they visited our site before we signed with them and even before we had settled on the land, so they could see what we wanted to achieve. We wanted our dream home, and rather than tell us what we could have, they asked what we wanted, then made it happen. We were on the same page. Vincent and Michelle Costello have been building Jennian Homes in Franklin for more than 10 years, did you find them to be knowledgeable and helpful when you approached them about building? Very much so; they fully explained the process. As we had never done this before we relied on their expertise. We had heard some building horror stories and wanted everything done right. They were both there to help us through any issues. Working in a bank, I have helped a lot of people with the financial side of building so I knew building could be stressful. As a result, I knew we needed the Costello’s to help us with the process. Did have your own architect or did you choose a Jennian Homes existing plan? We’ve had two homes since we married; neither was a new home. We had an idea of what we wanted so looked at some Jennian plans which fitted with our ideas and also visited some show homes. An adapted Jennian plan, incorporating added elements we saw and liked, perfectly suited our needs. You were living in Tuakau, what made you build in Te Kauwhata?
We had sold our property and couldn’t find a suitable replacement so decided to build. Our previous home was on two acres but with construction going up all around us, we wanted to get back to a rural outlook. Our daughter and her family live in Waerenga so we knew the area. When a 65-acre block came on the market just as we were looking around, we bought it and everything fell into place. Noel works from home doing mechanics and engineering but I travel to Takanini each day. However, the drive is worthwhile when I come home to such a beautiful house. How much advice did you receive regarding building materials? We were given all the options as well as addresses of places built with materials which appealed to us. We did a few road trips to help us decide because it’s not easy imagining outcomes just from looking through brochures. Did Jennian Homes offer you the services of a colour consultant and or did you plan interior decor yourself? Yes, we had colour consultant from Yellow Fox but we already had fixed ideas in mind so they helped us achieve these. Once aware we weren’t building a standard house, we were shown more options to suit our plan. Who worked with when planning the home and did you deal with the same person throughout? We started with one sales person who unfortunately left but it was a very smooth transition to Jo who was fully up to speed. In fact, she was fantastic – so patient and nothing was too much trouble. She provided a host of options. Once the build began, project managers, Pete and Alex oversaw the build. Everyone knew exactly what was happening throughout and, if I rang the office, I was fully informed on progress.
Noel & Alison Miller Most people work to a budget; in considering your own budget was there much you had to compromise on and if so what? We started with a budget which increased over time, as it does, but we didn’t want a standard home, so we worked outside the box with Jennian to make this happen. In the end, we didn’t compromise on much at all. How long did the build take once you had signed the contract and were you happy with the time frame? The build took 9 to 10 months. I don’t think anyone is entirely happy with build time frames especially when living in a shed while the new home is built. But, really, 10 months was much shorter than others we’ve heard about and the wait was definitely worth it. We saw progress every day and excellent communication between all parties was so helpful. Were there any hold ups with the likes of resource consent and council permits etc? If so, were they dealt with efficiently? From the time we purchased the land till we were in our new home was almost a year. Everything went
smoothly except for a couple of bumps when chosen items were no longer available or not quite what I wanted. But, again, I was given alternatives and any hiccups were quickly dealt with. The longest part was actually getting everything we wanted into the plan. Later, we did change a couple of things which added to the time. What aspect of your new home do you like best? All of it. The house turned out exactly as we had imagined; I still can’t believe it’s ours. Is there anything you would do differently? Maybe not live in a shed while having the house built! However, not paying rent saved us money, allowing more to spend on our home. Given the opportunity to build again would you be knocking on Jennian Homes’ door? Definitely. We appreciated that most of the tradesmen and contractors were local and, in fact, we knew quite a few of them. Furthermore, the standard of workmanship was very high. We are extremely pleased.

Train plans steaming ahead While improvements to our local rail network chug along slowly, ambitious plans for a heritage train museum are at full throttle. ANGELA KEMP reports. For 60-years Roose vessels traded along the Waikato River and its tributaries, also trans-shipping goods at Port Waikato. He became known as the Grand Old Man of the River.
If you are one of the hapless commuters who face the daily challenge of getting to Auckland by public transport, you will have welcomed the news that the Pukekohe to Papakura rail line is to be electrified. When that eventuates is anybody’s guess but it’s a safe bet steam trains will be rolling along local tracks long beforehand. Work has started alongside the rail line in Mercer on a new depot and museum for the Mainline Steam Heritage Trust. The development will not only be a depot for maintaining locomotives and rolling stock but eventually a fully operational museum with café and 100-person conference room attracting train enthusiasts from around the world. Mainline Steam is an organisation devoted to the restoration and operation of historic mainline steam locomotives. It runs regular day excursions and multi-day tours throughout New Zealand. These excursions provide travellers with the unique opportunity to relive the

Mercer Station concept plan days when steam was king while experiencing the magnificent New Zealand countryside. According to project manager Pete van Grinsven the Mercer rail heritage facility will be one of only a few in the world. “It will be a great asset drawing international recognition and attention to the Waikato region. It will not only bring in visitors but will also provide employment and business opportunities for local residents,” he says.
MSHT previously had a depot in Auckland housed in the ex NZR diesel depot in Parnell but had to vacate to make way for a new station. Several alternative sites were considered, including Glenbrook, before the Trust located a block of land beside the railway corridor adjacent to the old Mercer railway station and yard.
The new depot will have a 70m x 32m roundhouse to accommodate the excursion train and the maintenance operation. There will be a back shunt to assemble excursion trains and a turntable.
It purchased 4ha from local, Jeanette Thomas, who four years ago opened her own museum in Mercer dedicated to her father Caesar Roose and his place in Mercer’s history.
WEll PlACED FOR THE TRAVEllER Nestled on the banks of the Waikato River, Mercer has long been a great resting place between Auckland and Hamilton. Good eating establishments, including the Pokeno Bacon Diner and Muddy Waters Tavern, are popular watering holes and the Mercer Cheese shop attracts customers from far and wide.

Thanks to the Mercer Rowing Club, the river is a constant hive of activity with rowers and their supporters adding to the vitality of the area. At weekends, Mercer Museum is a treasure of local history and contains a great display of old photographs recording the days before the bridge was built. Those seeking adventure will
know Mercer Airfield for its sky-diving and other aircraft activities while five kms south is the Meremere drag strip. A short distance further on is the Hampton Downs Raceway. The Mercer Motel is about to be expanded and a large commercial site is being developed near the service station near to SH1.

Much of the track sets and fittings have come from the closed Huntly East coal mine and are now on site, ready to lay once the site is filled. Fortunately, Auckland’s construction boom is providing plenty of fill to bring the site up to the level of the main trunk track. “Our Auckland team has been successful in negotiating an access agreement to our new Mercer site through Kiwi-Rail land,” Pete says. “We can now plan to start filling the site as soon as possible as the access is presently able to support trucks driving in and out to dump spoil on our site.
“There are some things that need doing beforehand, mainly installing drainage pipes before dumping fill on the site begins.” It is expected that the depot will be ready for engines next year. Also located on the site will be the restored, former Newmarket signal box. Whilst the future of Pukekohe’s historic train station is still undecided, Pete says the trust would be happy to see it re-located to Mercer if the opportunity arose. MSHT has a depot in Plimmerton and another in Christchurch. There are seven locomotives available for service and these are continuously maintained in operating condition. MERCER ON TRACK SINCE 1875 The North Island Main Trunk railway opened to Mercer in May, 1875, crossing the Mangatawhiri swamp, then running alongside the Great South Road. A short branch line met up with the Waikato Steam Navigation company’s boats (later Roose Shipping) which were then plying the Waikato River. The train service started with two trains per day, taking about two hours 50 minutes to travel between Auckland and Mercer. Just over two years later, the line was extended to Ngaruawahia The first station at Mercer was destroyed by fire and the next station, built in 1902, consisted of a long wood and iron building, complete with a large

refreshment room and bar, ladies room, public room, booking office, stationmaster’s room and post and telegraph department. There was also a large engine shed besides a large pump house and coal shed. Eight cottages were built nearby for the stationmaster, porter, cadet, two engine drivers, two firemen, and two greasers. In October, 1940, the Wellington to Auckland express derailed just south of the station. The engine tipped on its side and was overrun by six carriages. The driver and fireman were killed and 12 passengers were injured. Excess speed was blamed for the accident. Another derailment at Mercer occurred in September, 2013, when some wagons on a freight train left the tracks and blocked the southbound lane of SH 1 and both tracks of the NIMT.

– VARICOSE VEIN MyTHS BUSTED

Here Richard Evans talks about varicose vein myths and treatment. you get varicose veins by crossing your legs, don’t you? And the only way to get rid of them is to have an operation to have them stripped or pulled out? These are common misbeliefs but they’re also what we call ‘varicose vein myths’. There’s certainly no need to have your veins stripped. Thankfully, this procedure has all but been banished to the archives. We use either laser or medical-grade glue treatments, which is pretty non-invasive stuff. Most people are up and about if not straight away at least the next day. And crossing your legs? The answer is varicose veins are usually hereditary so making sure you sit ‘uncrossed’ won’t make any difference. Some people suggest waiting for treatments until the veins get bigger; to after you’ve had children; or until they start causing problems.
However, like most things, the sooner they are attended to, the better the outcome. leaving varicose veins means they may become more ropey and harder to treat.
hOW lASER TREATmENT OR gluE WORKS Using laser gently heats the vein and closes it off so blood can flow to healthy veins. The vein in question will then eventually fade. The same goes when we use
glue. Tiny amounts of glue are injected into the problem vein while we monitor the treatment on screen. When the glue is in place, we carefully apply a bit of pressure on the vein and that seals it. The vein hardens and is eventually absorbed by the body with blood naturally re-routing through to healthy veins. With visible varicose veins having effectively stopped working, no blood is flowing through there.
Having to wear compression stockings for months is another myth. you do have to wear compression stockings after treatment but only for 10 days max not for months. So, remember, ropey veins in the legs are not the result of sitting cross-legged all one’s life and, contrary to popular opinion, having varicose veins treated doesn’t involve an operation to have them stripped out.

Beans means soup! As winter chills bites it’s time to bite back – by fortifying ourselves with soul-warming soups and what better way to achieve the perfect blend than with the new Vitamix ASCENT A3500i with five touch button programmes to make soups and other meals easy. Tuscan Tomato White Bean Soup Makes: 1.9 l (8 cups) Total Time: 25 Minutes
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
3 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled, halved 5 garlic cloves, peeled 1/8 tsp salt 2 Tbsp tomato purée 900g Roma tomatoes, quartered 425g white beans, drained 1.25 l (4 cups) vegetable stock 240 ml (1 cup) water 1 sprig rosemary 1 tsp rosemary leaves, chopped 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes 115g (4 cups) Ciabatta bread, cubed 55g (1/2 cup) Mozzarella cheese, shredded
Directions Heat 1 Tbsp of the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over mediumhigh heat. Add the onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, beans, broth, water, rosemary sprig, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes. Discard the rosemary sprig. Working in batches, carefully ladle the stovetop soup into the Vitamix container and secure lid.

Select Variable 1. Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High. Blend for 20 seconds or until desired consistency is reached. Pour into a pot to keep warm. Repeat with leftover soup from the stovetop. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F ). Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet, drizzle with remaining olive oil, and sprinkle with chopped rosemary and shredded mozzarella. Bake until croutons are golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Top each bowl of soup with the croutons and serve.

Art in the Clevedon artists no longer live a quiet life, secluded from the public while they create their life’s work. Well, certainly not the artists who participate in the Clevedon Art Trail. These artists have flung open their gallery doors and invite one and all to immerse themselves in the art of country living. JES MAGILL recently embarked on an artistic exploration in the area and loved what she saw.
The Wright stuff Tall Tane no piece of junk James Wright from Art Industry in Clevedon is one of six artists featured in Design Junkies, a six-part TV reality competition series which started on TVNZ early May. While reality TV isn’t really his thing, when James heard the brief was to produce an original work based around the theme Aotearoa – which is already the driving force for his own work – he took the plunge.
“Industry without art is brutality”, art scholar, John Ruskin said famously back in 1870, and artist/sculptors, Cheryl and James Wright from Art Industry in Clevedon couldn’t agree more. Any discussion on art in this picturesque village will inevitably mention the Wrights. Since establishing Art Industry in The Black Shed six years ago, the gallery and creative space has been a pivotal place for artists and artisans to show their work and gain support for their art. And, as the Wrights were transforming the former humble shed, they always intended that it be a gallery with a difference – one where various artworks could be acquired at affordable prices. Cheryl creates interior and exterior wall sculpture combining ceramic, corten steel and copper,
while James specialises in large scale pieces, some as tall as 6m, mainly in corten steel. Art Industry also offers a unique collection of sculpture, painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, bronze, photography and prints by established and emerging artists. Many will recognise James’ work from high profile outdoor exhibitions such as Waiheke Sculpture on the Gulf and Sculpture in the Gardens at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Several of his pieces are permanently on display there, having been purchased by the Friends of the Gardens. Back at Art Industry, James says The Black Shed exhibitors are an eclectic mix. “We feature local artists, and colleagues from around the country. Their work is often unique and hasn’t been
The six artists were encouraged to use recycled materials as much as possible and James’ entry called, Tane, which stands 4.3m high, was created from foraged pieces of steel, timber and bronze as well as recycled materials from his own back yard. “I had a vision of a very tall man, the Lord of the Forest, who encapsulated our culture,” he says. Clevedon countryside Art trail beCkons Clevedon sure has a lot going for it; an idyllic valley with a stunning landscape which feels worlds away from the city yet is so close. This quaint village known among other things for its successful Clevedon Farmers Market, attracts a steady stream of visitors so it’s not surprising that it is home to artists who are inspired by what this beguiling community offers. For us, it’s really important that whatever we show is different and fresh.” Commenting on the health of New Zealand’s art scene in general, James says it’s growing all the time. “Art is becoming a bigger part of people’s budgets and
investments, for their landscaping and indoor outdoor flow because it creates an appealing focal piece for their own landscape. “Having something special puts a smile on their faces – it’s something they enjoy every time they come home. People buy
jewellery to adorn themselves, and in a similar way we buy art to enhance our landscapes.” Of installing commissioned works for clients, a proud James says, “it’s a privilege to share our art and culture in a way that represents and enhances our environment.”
exhibition dream come true When SOUTH visited Katie Blundell Artist at her Clevedon Valley gallery and studio recently she was applying final brush strokes to a painting titled Grin and Bear It. It’s one of 20 works featuring her solo exhibition, Urban Jungle: Idioms Cityside, opening July 5 at the Railway Street Studios in Newmarket, Auckland. The painting depicts a bear with green eyes, which Katie explains symbolises the green eyed monster. “It’s a comment on New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome. There are people in life who don’t really want you to do well, or rather, they do but they don’t. We’re constantly told to, ‘grin and bear it’, just keep going; that it’s easier to stay with the group and do what everyone else is doing.”
Paint the Town Grey and Ahead of The Pack are other works lined up for the exhibition, which has recurrent themes of ambition and survival. “I get ideas from life and our urban jungle and, really, it’s about everybody just getting through it.” The Urban Jungle exhibition follows on from Katie’s largest solo exhibition. Held in 2016, Countryside Idioms, featured 44 works. “The idea for the show came from initially not knowing what an idiom was! English wasn’t my strong suit! But when I researched, I discovered that idioms are common themes humans struggle with. This really helped me explore the collective experience of being human; it’s a similar concept to Carl Jung’s theory of Collective Unconscious.
“The exhibition was a huge success and I said then I’d love to do an Idioms Cityside. So when Fiona Cable from Railway Street Studios offered me a solo exhibition, it was a dream come true.” Katie’s paintings are honest and clever with a humorous touch. “A collector once said of my art, ‘it’s like having pages of your diary’ and my paintings do have a little bit of my soul. I like that when looking at my earlier work, it takes me back to that time in my life.” One of three local artists who set up the Clevedon Arts Trail two years ago, Katie also teaches art classes and workshops for all ages. “I like to think about community needs and respond to them through my art”.
“We wanted to develop a way to bring more people to Clevedon and raise awareness of our local artists”, says Maureen Conquer from Forgotten Arts. Comprising eight local artists and creatives, members of the Art Trail regularly open their studios to the public and each year, they host an annual open weekend, running over Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend. The identifying symbol for participating galleries are 2m long steel arrows designed by James Wright from Art Industry. Employers should be very careful if considering deducting money from an employee’s wages, even if the right to do so is in a contract.
Building companies build showhomes to showcase the quality and design features expected of them and to inspire ideas you might not have thought of yet. As a homebuyer, visiting a showhome isn’t just about price comparisons and deciding who to build with, it’s an opportunity to create your wish list. Interiors magazines and social media are a great source of inspiration but there’s nothing quite like standing in a real home to understand exactly what you do and don’t want. Here are some tips to get the most out of your visit to a showhome: • ASK QUESTIONS – There will always be a company representative at the showhome, and it is his or her job to answer all your questions. Don’t be shy about asking as many questions as you need to. • TAKE PHOTOS – See something you like? Take photos and keep a record from each showhome visited. • MAKE A LIST OF MUST-HAVES
There was a case recently when an employer was ordered to pay compensation to an employee after the employee was wrongfully dismissed.

The case involved a Christchurch chef who brought a claim against her previous employers after she felt she had been pressured to resign. The Employment Relations Authority agreed and awarded more than $13,000. Previous to this, the employee had asked the employer for an advance of wages before the Christmas shutdown period. The employer agreed and advanced $1000. An agreement was drawn up and signed which provided repayment of the loan interest-free by deducting $60 per fortnight from the chef’s pay. The agreement also included a clause that if the chef left her employment, the balance of the loan would be repaid in full and could be deducted from any wages owed, including her holiday pay. After matters turned unpleasant, the employer gave notice of a disciplinary meeting, and deducted the loan from the employee’s pay without allowing her an opportunity to respond or rearrange her finances. The employer conceded at the Authority hearing that this was a mistake because the employee had not resigned; the Authority treated this wrongful deduction as one of the factors in finding a constructive dismissal.

Although it was not a part of this case, the employer could also have encountered a problem under the Wages Protection Act 1983 had the chef withdrawn her consent to the deduction in writing. Under this Act an employer may not make an unlawful or unreasonable deduction from wages. It may be lawful if the employee and employer have agreed in writing to the deduction. However, most employers do not realise they must consult with the employee if the right to deduct is in a general clause of an employment contract, or that an employee can vary or withdraw his or her consent to the deduction by giving written notice, which the employer must follow. It would have been interesting had the chef given notice in writing that she no longer consented to a loan payment coming out of her pay. Westpac economists recently wrote: “Market turnover is down, house prices are now falling in northern New Zealand, and the rate of house price inflation has slowed elsewhere.” A significant reduction in recent availability of credit also means fewer people can afford the mortgage required to buy property and this will also be influencing the market. If the market has cooled, is it time to adjust price expectations? The world is in the midst of a political turmoil. This will impact on achievable house prices as has previous economic crises – the oil price shock in 70’s, the stock market crash – 80’s, the Asian crisis in the 90’s and the GFC – 2007/8. If you think your home is still worth the previous high levels achieved then it may be time to wake up to the fact that those levels may not be possible now. It will come back as it always does after such events but it’s the time frame for that which is uncertain. However, for now, you may need

The good news is vendors should remember they’re selling and buying in the same market – if your home doesn’t sell for the previous higher price this may also be reflected in the value of the home you want to purchase so you are no worse off. Vendors everywhere think their home is worth more than it is even when faced with data from agents showing statistics and analysis of the current market. Sometimes they even choose agents who promise higher prices despite market trends proving otherwise. This gives the entire industry a bad name so choose an agent you trust to do the job you are asking of them and, remember, they can’t be blamed if the house doesn’t sell at the vendor’s price expectation. The publication of new Council capital values (CVs) released last year have also given some vendors inflated views of what their properties are worth because their property, or properties like them, might have previously sold for more than CV – the adage that it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay, is true here and can be hard to stomach.
