Good times We all know that the older we get, the quicker time goes by so, last month when a colleague gleefully said, “it’s exactly six months to Christmas”, I felt my years., The one good thing I deduced from her statement was that if the past six months had simply flown, the rest of winter would surely pass by fast with lighter evenings and warmer days here before we knew it.

Of course, I’ve just had a week of lovely warm days in Vanuatu although unseasonal rain meant sun-bathing wasn’t on the agenda – thank goodness for my fabulous and very long-lasting spray tan from Bloom Skin and Beauty Boutique. I certainly looked the part and we had such a good time.

I’ll bring you plenty on Vanuatu’s charms in upcoming issues of SOUTH.

Recently, South spoke with Pukekohe photographer, Paul Smith, who has developed quite the portfolio, which includes this month’s stunning covershot of Awhitu Wharf. See pages 30-31 to read more.

It was also exciting that SOUTH journalist (in this instance for Rural Living) Jon Rawlinson was runner up Best Senior Sports Journalist competing against entries from scores of publications. What a thrill!

But, now, it’s back to this month’s SOUTH featuring the work of a talented Franklin photographer, Paul Smith, some fascinating insights into that Caribbean enigma, Cuba and a quick look at carving a modelling career from beauty pageant success. Enjoy the read, the recipes and, hopefully, some sunny days but if the rain persists then the business end of the football world cup is good reason to curl up in front of the TV. Take care, all!

glamour ‘Fillies’ on and off the racecourse showed their style at the annual Lindauer Ladies’ Race Day held mid June at Pukekohe Park. One again it was a ‘fascinating’ event with fashionistas fabulously dressed from head to toe. Acacia Cove Retirement Village With

Acacia Cove Retirement Village, established for some 25 years, has built a reputation for occupying an idyllic location bounded by the estuary at Wattle Downs and handy to the golf course across the road. South talked to manager Bruce Cullington about the range of living options and the environment which has made this an award-winning village.

Tell us about the accommodation makeup at Acacia Cove – does it offer apartments, units, villas or individual rooms?

We have 215 villas and 10 apartments with a further five apartments currently under construction.

award at the Eldercare Innovation Awards, (part of the 8th AsiaPacific Investment Forum in Singapore). You were the first New Zealand village to win an award at this competition so what does that mean to you?

These days people live longer so are retirement resorts/villages attracting younger retirees and do some of your residents still work?

It reinforces the fact that so many resident volunteers have created and manage a diverse range of activities so that their friends and neighbours can live longer, healthier and more balanced lives.

Our average entry age is 72 years so, yes, many of our residents are still in paid employment and many others do voluntary work at hospice, Meals on Wheels, St Vincent de Paul, Riding for the Disabled and other organisations.

What about the social life outside of the village – do you organise outings such as day trips or to public concerts? Do some residents organise their own group outings beyond those organised by management?

What type of communal facilities within the village environment does Acacia Cove offer retirees living there?

Our social committee arranges regular special interest trips.

However, many of our residents belong to outside organisations such as Probus, U3A and gardening groups and, therefore, lead quite busy and active social lives.

We have a bowling green, indoor swimming pool, village green, snooker table, craft room, meeting room, bar, library, hair salon, restaurant and dining room.

It is well known that staying active and having special interests encourages wellbeing and mental health, do you offer an actual programme of activities within the village and if so what do they include?

can feel that the village is different from others the moment they drive through the gates. They remark on its low density, beautiful grounds and how positive and happy everyone seems. Most residents are able to come and go as they please just as if they were living in the wider community. They advantage is they live in a safe environment where assistance is on hand if needed and difficult chores can be taken care of. We encourage residents to live as full a life as possible.

Is there anything new on the drawing board for Acacia Cove?

We are continually looking at ways to improve our services. As mentioned earlier, we are currently building five new apartments as some residents have expressed interest in relocating from their large villas to a dwelling closer to the village centre.

Does Acacia Cove have a hospital wing? If not what is the procedure if someone needs hospital care, especially long term?

We do not have care on site but several years ago the village owners sold land opposite the village to Bupa NZ Ltd with the proviso that our residents had priority. This has been very successful.

What is it about life at Acacia Cove that attracts residents?

How liberal is their lifestyle?

Are there any restrictions on what they can do or the hours they keep?

The activity programme is regularly reviewed to ensure that activities offered are good for the mind, body and soul. These include outdoor bowls, indoor bowls, water aerobics, table tennis, golf, petanque, walking, snooker, whist, darts, osteo-exercises, a choir, tai chi, meditation, art, housie, a men’s group and several card and board games.

Let’s do the time warp….Cuba!

Communist Cuba has long been a must see destination for many people but the doors to tourism only started opening in the 1990’s with inbound tourism gradually increasing in recent years, Here NICK BATES, recounts his recent visit to a country where trade embargoes have left it stuck very much in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Cubans are vibrant, passionate and colourful people who love to sing, dance and socialise but they go at their own pace for everything with a philosophy of ‘relax, enjoy, smile’. Tourists in a hurry definitely need to learn patience – as our guide, ‘Tatty’ often said, “hakuna matats – relax, no worries!”

It didn’t take long to realise that despite the poverty and the lack of services, Cubans, in general, are not really aware of any deprivation, they are simply happy with life and what they have. The more I saw, the more I came to appreciate and admire this contentment.

What’s more, for the average Cuban there is no political situation; they fought for their country and communism is a way of life providing food, clothing and housing. The Government supplies or rations it all.

However, the Government also understands the value of the tourist dollar and the huge growth in tourism is being embraced and encouraged. Subsequently, our tour group was welcomed with open arms.

Our personal journey started in Houston, USA from where we took a seven day road trip to Miami and then departed for Havana. At Miami Airport, there was a special counter where visitors to Cuba could obtain the appropriate entry documents.

These included a visa of sorts and other documentation which cost about US$150 each. Entering Cuba was easy so long as you had the

right paperwork. Some paperwork we had to keep in order to leave!

On arrival, our Peregrine tour took us through the north western part of Cuba – Havana, Soroa, Vinalés, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and back to Havana.

Havana was fascinating; just as we had seen in pictures, books and on the big screen – dilapidated, impoverished and hot, yet vibrant and bustling. We were respected as foreigners and treated with courtesy. We were never heckled or harassed.

A walk along the seaside boulevard at night, where locals congregated late into the evening, was a sight to behold. Everyone was full of energy – socialising, eating and drinking.

Lovers were courting. Back in Havana, at the end of our trip, we took a tour around the city in old cars which was a real highlight.

All hotels in Cuba are governmentowned. Havana’s Hotel Nacional is the largest and most popular. We stayed there at the beginning and the end of our trip. It was very busy but also very clean and relatively well presented.

to rent out rooms. We lived with the host families who did all the guests’ laundry and provided breakfast. This hospitality was an aspect of the trip we really enjoyed – meeting and talking to locals.

Most rooms had a fan and an air conditioning unit. There are/were lesser levels of the same type of accommodation for budgetconscious travellers. Guest houses were identified by a symbol above the front door; one symbol for foreigners only (blue) another, for locals.

In Vinales our visit to the Santo Tomas caves and a tobacco farm were most worthwhile but no health and safety rules there.

The caves took us deep into dark, traversing boulders and pools of water where we appreciated the considerable drop on temperature, a welcome relief from the extreme humidity and heat outside.

The hotel restaurant catered well to tourists with an abundant choice of food compared to what we encountered on the road.

Next was the long drive to Trinidad (established in 1514 by the Spaniards) and it was worth every kilometre. The old buildings, cobblestone streets, horse and carts, kids playing in narrow streets, cigar-smoking locals hanging about in happy groups at street-side front doors, provided photo opportunities at every corner. It really was another world.

Next up was Vinalés, a country town in a mountainous region where we experienced the first of many home stays. For most of our trip we stayed in guest houses; these being family homes permitted by the Government

A real highlight in Trinidad was the Cave Night Club, located deep down inside a large cave on the city outskirts. It was popular with locals and tourists and was the only formal nightlife we experienced on the trip; most entertainment

occurred on the streets and in public places.

We discovered young people were apt to arrange ‘pop up’ style gatherings; the word just spreads and the entertainment happens.

Salsa dancing and drinking rum are popular pastimes for ALL Cubans and, as such, whenever something was happening it was soon identified and located. As I said, Cubans love to sing and dance!

When it came to food, convenience stores on the road were virtually non-existent until arriving in the larger towns. If you did happen to come across a store, it was owned and operated by the Government.

However, there were plenty of hidden restaurants for locals which were owned and operated by families. Our guide was a local and well known everywhere by families and individuals who ran these ‘off the grid’ cafes.

They were usually al fresco style, under a canopy or roof, and off the beaten path. Those we visited were basic but clean and the fare was fresh. It was a great way to mix, mingle and eat with the locals.

However, for the most part, the food was bland. Chicken and pork were staple meats with salad consisting primarily of cabbage, tomato and cucumber. Beans and rice were served at every meal.

Breakfast generally consisted of an omelette with cold cut processed ham, cold cut cheese, mango, pineapple, fresh squeezed juice and Cuban coffee (yum!).

to use them and although this improves in larger towns, even then it is rare to find credit card facilities in abundance. Mostly, we needed cash (CUC).

This also included a lot of Russian names and a huge influx of Lada cars. Every second vehicle on the road seemed to be a ‘leftover’ Lada!

When it came to money Cuba has two currencies, one for tourists – CUC (Cuban Convertible Currency) approximately CUC$1 = US$1 – and CUP (Cuban Peso) for Cuban Nationals. The value of CUP varied.

For those relying on Internet access, prepare to be frustrated.

Cuban nationals seem to have average access over their phones, but for foreigners the service isn’t great. However, I found it quite refreshing actually being off line for two weeks – perhaps I should try it more often!

Pre-Russia, the construction was spectacular with colourful buildings, ornate, decorative columns and staircases and brightly tiled porches and courtyards inside villa-style homes so it was great to see many old buildings, especially in Havana, being restored.

The Cuban leg of our trip cost approximately NZ$3500. Our small Peregrine tour group consisted of some 10 to 12 Australians and Kiwis. Cost included most meals, accommodation, gratuities, transport, exhibit fees, etc. It was a very well run operation and I highly recommend this way of seeing Cuba.

Many of the cars from the 50’s and 60’s are still (famously) in use.

However, they are held together with any parts available. Most have diesel engines and not the original V8s but all the same, they are a sight to behold whizzing around the cities and towns, horns honking and music blearing from crackly speakers.

Of course, everything in Cuba was basic with Russia’s influence through the middle part of this century, evident. The last wave of economic boom from Russia’s input had construction moving away from the iconic and classiclooking architecture to very boring, square, uninspiring construction.

Before visiting Cuba it is helpful to have a basic understanding of Spanish as most Cubans don’t speak English. This is easy with a translation app on the phone or a bit of swot before leaving home.

Fortunately, Spanish is a beautiful language and relatively easy to grasp.

All foreigners should use CUCs. US dollars are accepted, however because Cubans can find it difficult to convert or cash in US currency, it is not always wanted as payment.

We took a lot of US dollars and Euros (on advice) and then used very little. A money machine located close to the Hotel Nacional, in Havana, was easy to use and dispensed a maximum of CUC$300 at one time. However, most of our trip was pre-paid through the tour company so any money carried was simply for cold drinks, extra alcoholic drinks, tipping and small niceties along the way.

There’s little point relying on credit cards as a sole payment method either. Few stores or food places in small areas have the technology

I also suggest that respect and understanding of the history and culture will go a long way to making any Cuban visit especially memorable. You learn a lot while there, but a basic understanding of the past helps.

In my mind, Cuba should be a ‘bucket list’ travel destination for everyone. It’s a fascinating place which takes visitors back in time.

Furthermore, its people have a huge history and show a sense of belonging and respect for the revolution they and their forbears endured.

There is no doubt Cuba is an intrepid destination and one to be prepared for. As with any overseas travel, one should avoid places or areas of concerns but I have to say I felt absolutely safe at all times in Cuba. We were exposed to a lot yet never once felt endangered.

Now, that I’ve been, seen and experienced so much, I probably won’t return. After all, the world is a big place with a lot more to see but I am so pleased I made this journey – Cuba is not a holiday destination; rather it is an exploration which leaves one truly rewarded. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Keeping pets safe in winter Most pets are part of the family and their wellbeing is a priority, but sometimes it’s easy to overlook or unwittingly forget the basics of best possible care. However, the SPCA has provided a few tips to help protect pets this winter.

Keep them warm and dry A cosy bed is a must to ensure pets have somewhere warm to curl up in the colder months. Cats

love the security of an igloo and horses really benefit from a winter coat. Cosy, waterproof coats for domestic animals can be found in pet stores, or knit them a cosy jumper. Heat pads keep pets warm when temperatures dip and are beneficial for old, young, and ailing pets. Adequate shelter is most important during rainy or frosty weather. A well-insulated, warm, waterproof and windproof shelter is essential for outdoor pets.

What to do in a storm In severe weather bring your pets inside to protect them from falling debris, high winds, heavy rain and other dangers. Some small animals may seem happy in an outside hutch, (rabbits may sit in the rain on purpose) but it’s best to bring them inside where it is safe. Ensure large animals have a secure shelter with plenty of access to food and water away from wind and rain.

Keep checking on them. Have a pet disaster kit ready for use.

They will investigate, push, pull and play with toys.

Winter exercise Motivating yourself on cold, dark days is hard, but it is important to walk dogs daily. Winter is a great time to explore local beaches which are off-limits to dogs during summer! Exercise horses too and provide indoors cats with stimulation. Rabbits and other small animals need a dry, warm, safe area to run around in.

If it is wet, there are many ways to keep pets entertained indoors! Food enrichment such as puzzle feeders are a great way to keep a cat, dog or rabbit occupied.

Wobblers, puzzle toys, and food dispensers can be found at most pet stores or make your own puzzle feeders using cardboard boxes, toilet rolls and household items. Bunnies love to play too.

Older animals, especially those with arthritis, find cold weather a challenge, Take extra care to keep them warm and dry. Arthritic animals will be more comfortable if they have a bed which has plenty of padding, and is elevated above cold floors. Be careful when exercising an arthritic or older pets in winter as walking on slippery surfaces can be difficult.

As for the implication that the old woman’s fate was related to poor dietary choices, I doubt any child ever threw away an apple in favour of chomping down on Mr Ed! The original ditty leads us on a tangent from reality, gradually upping the ante while following a logical sequence of predator and prey.

It does this so subtlety, through rhyme, that we don’t even

question how a cow is able to ‘get our goat’, for example, much less that an old woman could swallow all these creatures in the first place. It concludes abruptly, and ironically, sending us plummeting back down back to our point of departure; reality is back... with a vengeance!

It may seem like a load of old nonsense – and it is! – but this rhyme has survived (unlike its protagonist) for generations simply because it has always remained faithful to the altered reality it establishes.

The major problem I have with Imagine That’s ‘re-boot’, however, is that it leaves us with the moral that if we don’t like how something turns out, we can just change it. The only problem with that logic, of ‘course’, is that it’s a load of old horse!

I’m not saying that we should scare the bejesus out of little ones but, yes children, the ugly sisters did cut off their own feet to fit into fur slippers (they were never glass, by the way); the wolf did end up as trough-filler for little pig number three; the old lady is dead, of course; and, as much as I would like to make believe otherwise, the Blues are not top of the Super Rugby table.

Ultimately, if we really do want to shelter our little ones from horrific goings on just read them something else; oh and, for goodness sake, never let them watch the news!

No Miss take –

Louise is a winner Growing up in Waiuku and attending Pukekohe High has proved to be an excellent springboard for a Franklin born and bred teenager’s international aspirations. Louise Dunn has a clutch of pageant wins under her belt and the world at her feet. She spoke to ANGELA KEMP. Being whisked off to Guatemala and Las Vegas to compete in beauty pageants was not something 19-year-old Louise Dunn thought would ever happen to her. In fact, she was unaware of their existence before being approached by the then director of Pageants of New Zealand, Dianne Foley, who, ‘out of the blue’ asked Louise to participate in a competition.

“Dianne contacted me after seeing me in a photo which was taken at the Dunedin University ball in 2015,” says Louise. “That was the start of my pageant journey.

“I was a wildcard entry into the Miss Teen Supermodel NZ Pageant.

Although I didn’t take the crown I did win the coveted interview section which was great.”

Louise well and truly caught the pageant buzz and went on to win Miss Teen Franklin and Miss Teen Manukau. She really gained her stride after winning the Miss Teen New Zealand title two years ago and found herself travelling to Guatemala.

“I competed in the Miss Teenager Universe pageant and was awarded the Miss Teen Universe Oceania crown even though I broke my toe early on in the pageant. I met some amazing girls from all around the world and had a fantastic experience.”

launched herself into charity work as a pageant ambassador, appearing in charity fashion shows and becoming the online face of Mirabella Dresses.

The success she enjoyed in Central America gave her the confidence to enter her first adult pageant, Miss Earth New Zealand 2017, where she was placed in the top 10. Later that year Louise was invited to attend the Miss Teen Continents world final in Las Vegas where she collected her sixth crown.

She says she had a great time as part of the Australasian contingent, which comprised five other (Aussie) girls.

“Life is very different in the US ‘smoking ‘state, but I had a weeklong ball both at the pageant and travelling to the Grand Canyon as well as tripping around Las Vegas with my Australian pageant sisters.”

Walking down the cat walk is a small part of pageantry and Louise says initially there was a lot of study as to what was expected as well as protocol for modelling in different countries.

“I learned a lot about overseas pageants prior to attending internationals and I researched previously held pageants in the country where I was to compete.

“When you are overseas, the minute you step out of your room, is the first minute of the working

day. Some days were 14 hours long and involved media such as TV and radio, shooting for the final show, dance routines, interviews upon interviews, and competitions in gowns, national costume and more.

myself for being able to rise to the challenge and do the best I can.”

“To hold the poise and posture for the longer days was quite gruelling but that was what you were there for – to represent your country.

“In my case it is information sharing and education about the preservation of our natural environment which is so important but for girls it is also a chance to kick-start modelling careers.

Pageants can be tough, but a good attitude and appreciation of the opportunity helps get you through those really tiring days. There is so much I have learned over the past three years, through hard work, determination, blood, sweat and tears.”

Louise adds that pageants also give contestants a voice to speak on what they are passionate about.

“In New Zealand the pageants are about the whole girl, someone who is confident enough to represent New Zealand on the world stage, not just about how a person wears a gown.”

She says such competitions provide a platform for any girl or woman to improve their self- esteem and confidence, and to learn their own worth.

Louise says the support and encouragement she has received from family and friends – not least her mum, Wendy Dunn – has been priceless.

“Pageants are definitely not like they are portrayed on television but gatherings of a fantastic group of people who support others, and become friends for life. I now have friends all over the world as well as locally as a result of my being a contestant.

“They all come along to the pageants and have celebrated my participation no matter what the outcome. I feel very lucky to have them.”

“Every pageant I have competed in has helped me grow as a person, and given me confidence and the ability to know that I can truly represent our country in the best way I possibly can. I have enjoyed travelling around the world to compete. I’m pretty proud of

What the future holds for Louise is up in the air as she concentrates on readying herself for her next, as yet undecided, pageant.

In the meantime she’s keeping busy in a sales position with Vodafone and helping out with her boyfriend’s band ‘Crooked Royals’ which has just been signed to a record label in the USA.

dUTCH CUMIN GOUdA & APPlE STUFFEd CHICKEN INGREDIENTS

mETHoD

• 4 chicken breasts • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp black pepper • 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped • 1 cooking apple, sliced • 100g Food Snob Cumin Gouda Cheese

Preheat oven to 190°C and line a baking dish with parchment or foil. Heat frying pan with olive oil. Sear both sides of chicken breast until golden brown, and remove from heat. Cut a pocket in each chicken breast and stuff with apple slices, grated Cumin Gouda and a sprinkle of thyme.

Place on baking dish, season with salt & pepper and a sprinkle of thyme. Bake for 20 mins until chicken is cooked through.

dUTCH GOUdA CHEESE TARTS INGREDIENTS • 250g savoury shortcrust pastry sheets • 20g unsalted butter • 1/2 an onion, thinly sliced • 90g (1 cup) thinly sliced button mushrooms • 20g unsalted butter • 1 Tbsp plain flour • 250ml milk (1 cup) • 50g diced ham • 60g grated Food Snob Gouda cheese • 1 Tbsp lemon juice • Freshly ground black pepper and nutmeg • 40g grated Food Snob dutch Gouda cheese • Ground paprika

mETHoD Preheat oven to 200°C. lightly grease 4 x 10cm tart tins with removable bases. line tins with pastry, cover with baking paper, and fill with dried beans or rice.

Bake for 8 mins or until pastry is cooked and lightly browned, remove beans and paper and cook for another 2 mins or until bases are dry. Remove from oven and reduce the temperature to 150°C. Melt 20g butter. Add onion and sauté for 4-5 mins until soft. Add mushrooms and cook for 5-6 minutes until tender, transfer to a plate. Melt remaining 20g butter.

Stir in flour and cook for 1 min.

Gradually add milk, whisking continuously, until smooth.

Simmer until thickened. Remove sauce from heat and stir in onions, mushrooms, ham, grated Food Snob dutch Gouda, lemon juice, pepper and nutmeg.

Carefully pour mixture into pastry shells and top with extra grated Food Snob dutch Gouda. dust with paprika if desired and bake for 15-20 mins or until golden. Cool in tins. Serve warm with a side salad for a delicious light lunch.

EASy FISH PIE WITH KUMARA Here’s a very quick and tasty weekend dish to keep the family happy Serves: 4 Preparation: 20 mins Cook time: 40 mins Total time: 60mins

INGREDIENTS

600g ready-made pumpkin soup 1/2 cup sour cream 400g smoked fish, flaked 1 cup frozen peas 2–3 tbsp chopped fresh chives or 2 chopped spring onions 400g (about 3 small) kumara, peeled and chopped dash of Tabasco sauce 1–2 tbsp butter 1 cup grated cheese

mETHoD Gently fold together soup, sour cream, smoked fish, peas and chives. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Transfer to a 6-cup

Bake at 180°C for 30–40 minutes until piping hot. Place under grill for about one minute at end of bake time if cheese needs to brown.

KITCHEN TIP: Invest in the best vegetable peeler possible. It will cut prep time, reduce stress and make cooking quicker and more enjoyable.

Saucy stir fries!

A great sauce can make or break a stir fry but thanks to our UK mates at Colindale’s Golden Dragon Restaurant, (london), there’s no need to the head to the supermarket for a pre-made sauce.

Instead Golden Dragon’s chefs tell us most people have everything in the pantry at home so here are their suggestions for making some classic Chinese sauces.

SATAy SAUCE: Crunchy peanut butter, light soy sauce, garlic and chilli will create a great satay sauce. Be flexible with quantities but 2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter and 1 tbsp soy sauce will be a good basis, then add garlic, chilli and sugar to taste.

Soy, GINGER & GARlIC SAUCE: A simple soy-based sauce can be a great accompaniment to both beef and vegetable noodles.

Dark soy sauce mixed with finely chopped ginger and minced garlic works particularly well. A dash of sesame oil will lift the sauce to add a great toasty flavour.

SWEET & SoUR SAUCE: Despite being a favourite of many,

people rarely make sweet & sour sauce at home. Combine the sour ingredients (soy sauce and rice vinegar) with the sweet ingredients (tinned pineapple chunks, tomato ketchup and sugar). The balance between sweet and sour is very important, so taste as you go.

ToP TIP: If the sauce is looking a little thin, add a teaspoon of cornflour dissolved in water to the sauce and within minutes it should begin to thicken. Alternatively, if it is too thick add a tablespoon of hot water.

Grooming salon excellence Since opening a year ago, RAWK hairdressing has stamped its presence on Pukekohe’s King Street, a salon with service excellence at it’s heart.

Success is a word Carla Southan can claim and be proud of. Her 24-year hairdressing journey has taken her from an enthusiastic 14-year-old, working part time for free in a local salon, to preparing for her own salon’s first birthday in Pukekohe next month.

In between she has worked with some of the country’s leading stylists and salon owners, been a hairdressing tutor and assessor, accrued considerable marketing skills and styled hair for the film and television industry.

Paul Smith – Franklin exposure ‘ When you cast out your line you can never really be sure what you’ll catch. For one Franklin local it was a passion for photography that has since seen him capture many intriguing subjects. JON RAWLINSON explains.

As I’m interviewing Franklin photographer, Paul Smith, he asks me a simple question: “What do you like about my photos?” I tell him I’m a journalist so it’s my job to ask the questions.

He laughs but it’s clear my attempted deflection isn’t sufficient. I mumble something about how they show he has a great eye. It’s still not a good answer but it’s the best I can come up with on the spot. Thankfully, this keen fisherman then lets me off the hook.

Originally from the Midlands in the UK, Paul settled in Pukekohe approximately 30 years ago. A cabinet maker by trade, he dabbled in making videos.

“I started off with video, recording home movies to send back to family in England. I even had a small business making videos for a while,” he explains. “I’ve always had a good eye.

Back when I was making wedding videos, I would do still frames to present and found I was good at catching particular moments.”

However, it wasn’t until quite recently that Paul threw himself into photography hook, line and sinker.

“I’ve only really been doing still photography for about five years. A friend of mine was taking

photos for a fishing magazine and I thought I’d give it a go myself.

When I bought my first decent camera, I fell in love with it,” he says.

“I had a furniture-making business for about 17 years, which I sold in March last year. After sucking in dust for 20 years, I just wanted to pursue photography. Over the past 12 months I’ve been trying to work out just where I want to go with it.”

So far the art form has taken Paul to all corners of our region. His portfolio features images from Awhitu to Kaiaua, Waiuku to Karioitahi, as well as from trips abroad. Whether photographing people or places, he appears to have a knack for depicting personalities which run deeper than surface appeal.

“It doesn’t matter where you are, whether it’s Paris, New York or Pukekohe, you should focus on your surroundings. You need to look for the beauty in things wherever you are,” he says.

“When I’m shooting a portrait, I want to show the real person, as I see them, and it’s the same for a landscape. It’s all about looking for emotion, for gesture. I read somewhere that: ‘You should like a photograph not for what you see but how it makes you feel.’

Photography’s not about all the technical stuff.”

Of course, understanding the ‘technical stuff’ is useful when honing any craft. Diving headlong into photography, Paul became motivated to learn as much as

“I’m doing a correspondence course which is really just to justify to myself that my work is valid,” he laughs.

“But I’m pretty much self-taught.

To become a photographer in the ‘70s, for example, you had to do an apprenticeship. Computers, digital cameras and digital enhancement have made it easier these days but they don’t make you a better photographer.”

Far from becoming a lost art, film photography is resurgent in popularity, Paul believes. “Film is tangible, physical. You might shoot a whole roll and not find out how you mucked up until three days later! It slows it all down so you have to learn to better understand the process,” he explains.

“It doesn’t really make much sense to shoot with film, to be fair, because if you want that look you can achieve it with digital. But there is a groundswell movement with a lot of younger people getting into it. It’s like playing a vinyl record; for some reason it just gives off a different vibe. You have to be in the

right mood to take a photograph so anything that helps put you in that zone is valuable.”

Whether in digital or on film, in vibrant (almost living) colour, or in black and white, Paul’s pictures (to me) seem to scream ‘right place, right time, right method’.

“When you’re shooting in black and white you have to think about the picture in a totally different way. I can be more artistic with it because I can simplify; get rid of clutter. It allows a direct feed to the emotion behind the picture, uncomplicated by colour.”

Anyone can take a good photograph... if they’re lucky. A modern camera increases the chances of success, particularly when held in practiced hands, but what makes an image successful in an artistic sense? It seems technology can’t replicate a selective eye and enquiring heart.

Many of Paul’s photos depict places I’ve often viewed but never really seen. Maybe that’s the real reason I’m so taken with his work – it’s not so much about the ‘what’ or even the ‘why’; it’s simply (if inexplicably) down to the simple fact that they challenge me to feel.

As a parting ‘shot’, I ask Paul if he has a particular favourite from all the images he’s taken. He pauses then replies succinctly: “That’s easy. It was the last one!”

I have a feeling that since we last spoke his shutter has closed on plenty more ‘favourites’.

Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) come in a range of beautiful colours, from pinks and purples through to white, scarlet and magenta with some varieties having twotoned flowers, ruffled petals or a light fragrance. This pretty plant’s heart shaped leaves are also attractive and can have mottled colours.

When watering cyclamens avoid wetting the flowers and foliage – this will minimise disease – and only water the soil surface when it feels a little dry.

To check moisture levels, gently scratch around in the top few centimetres of potting mix. If it feels dry and dusty then the plant can be re-watered. If potting mix sticks to your finger and feels moist, then leave watering for a few more days.

Whether seeking winter colour, or just wanting a sense of the outdoors inside, pot plants can bring a touch of nature indoors during our coldest months.

However, all plants need love and attention so here are a few tips, courtesy of yates, to keep your indoor garden looking fantastic during winter: As temperatures drop, indoor plants will require less moisture so it’s important to reduce watering to avoid water-logged plants.

Together with under watering, over watering is one of the most common problems affecting indoor plants.

The days of ‘splish splash’ when taking a bath are now more of a ‘rub dub, just relaxin’ in the tub’ as modern bathrooms become a place to linger.

In fact, many households now look for spa-like ambience at home. However, while one may dream of a spacious bathroom with a double walk-in shower, free-standing bath and twin basins, the reality is that sometimes a small space is all that is available.

But that doesn’t mean a variety of luxurious features cannot be incorporated to give an illusion of space and to make the best use of space.

The focal point of any bathroom is the bathtub — it sets the tone more than any other feature. Whether sporting the modern lines of contemporary design or the clawed feet of an antique model, the bath is a symbol of comfort.

Free-standing baths are the go-to for most contemporary homes today and even smaller bathrooms will usually accommodate a bath of one’s choice.

However, if space is lacking, why not invest in a modern shower system which can provide just as much luxury with a fraction of the footprint. If dispensing with a bathtub altogether it may be possible to even include a roomy, walk-in, tiled shower cubicle with little need for doors or even a wet room with no walls at all.

Of course, many shower systems now have all the bells and whistles to provide a spa-like experience but if a high-tech shower system, with several settings, is beyond the pocket consider a rain showerhead – it can feel just as grand.

With every hot shower comes steam so ventilation is key. An extraction system will keep the room clear of steam helping prevent mould and allowing towels to dry more easily. Heated towel rails will also help eliminate damp towels.

Beyond all the fittings a bathroom needs, colour goes a long way to

creating the right mood especially in a small bathroom. When in doubt, opt for white. All-white decor instantly makes a small space seem bigger and adds a relaxing spa-like vibe to help turn the bathroom into a serene sanctuary. Pops of natural greenery will complement the white and add to the day spa feel.

Storage is another issue. A floating vanity is a great solution in a small bathroom as it gives a feeling of spaciousness. A vanity with large drawers inside the vanity, rather than shelves, can also maximise storage.

Some of the main centres have seen small falls in property values over the past few months emphasised by another month of data showing an average of 1.2% value down nationally over the past three months. In the regions, covered by the report below, the average falls seems to be less than a full percentage point but the trend mirrors that seen nationally.

Five of the six main centres across New Zealand have seen property values fall in at least two individual months. It seems clear that the high levels of prices around the country and tight serviceability criteria from the banks are slowing the market.

There is certainly less activity in the market. Couple this with less competition and collateral there will be less pressure on price.

Strong population growth, pent-up demand, supportive financial conditions and further eventual easing of loan-to-value ratio restrictions will support prices.

constraints, and government policy changes are expected to keep prices and activity contained. The current financial forecast is for stability in the housing market but I suspect there could be some bumps in the road ahead.

The market is still finding its level and may even be fatigued with people sitting back, watching and waiting. This is seen most obviously in the number of days property are on the market before selling – with some areas rising by some 22 days on average.

But I don’t want to seem alarmist; homes are selling and people’s reasons for moving remain the same – change of job, downsizing or moving up to that larger property as the family grows.
