Editor says... As Christmas nears I am feeling amazingly calm and optimistic that all is well in my world this season. However, recently I learned about a drink driver who has killed four people on our roads, and been caught driving and drunk with no licence several times. He has now been fined (yet again), sentenced to six months community service and must wait two years before he can apply for a driver’s licence. I’m appalled this man is allowed to go free. I am not convinced his punishment will prevent him getting into a car again, driving drunk and possibly having another accident which leaves someone dead and a family grieving. His sentence seems totally irresponsible. It leaves him free to break the rules again and at a time when merriment abounds. In this instance, I say lock him up where he cannot access a vehicle or alcohol. Our courts may consider him fit to be let loose but I’m doubtful. I hope the families of those victims, and others suffering loss find a way to still enjoy this festive season which should be about peace and happiness not grief and stress.
ON THE COVER IN THE SWIM: With the advent of summer, school holidays, Christmas shutdowns and that feeling of ‘let’s kick back and relax’, it’s time to head for the beach, the pool and the sand. To ‘dress’ for the occasion, check out shapely new season swimwear styles from Moontide. Focused on the free-spirited Kiwi woman there plenty to suit the figure and catch the eye – see page 27 for choices to grace our shores.
Hopefully, SOUTH readers will also take the foot of the festive pedal (for a bit, at least), ensuring, they reflect on those things that are meaningful to them rather than just the tinsel, toasts and hype. Take time to read SOUTH, too – seasonal recipes should keep you sweet and there are some great books to make Christmas giving a treat. Check out the entertainment page too – what great events to add joy to the upcoming weeks and, finally, remember to be glad in all that makes this a special time. Keep family close, show your appreciation to those who have made your year a good one and mend any broken fences. To you all, a very blessed Christmas and thank you so much for embracing SOUTH in its first year on the market.

Songwriters Buddy DeSylva and Lew Brown were right on the money when they wrote that the best things in life are free if this event is anything to go by. Featuring the Auckland Gospel Choir, the Children’s Choir, TJ Taotua and more, this year’s Carols in the Park is sure to have Papakura pumping to the beat of Christmas. More information via the Papakura Business Association – visit their website papakura.co.nz/events.
When horsepower and the power of horses combine, visitors to Ellerslie are assured of more than one winning run with races (on wheels and four legs), stunt shows and performances from the likes of Tiki Taane and Hello Sailor, on course. With horses and Harleys taking centre stage, this family-friendly event is designed to assist the Wood for the Trees charity in its efforts to help people affected by mental illness. SHORTLAND STREET – THE MUSICAL:
They’re dying up there!
Justin Rogers. Mark Hadlow, Guy Langford,
l Smith Photo Michae
Is it you or is it me? Actually, it was JON RAWLINSON who was among the throng of Shortland Street fans wandering up the red carpet (he promises he wiped his shoes first!), paying a visit to ATC’s (Auckland Theatre Company’s) ASB Waterfront Theatre for opening night of Shortland Street – the Musical. In the real world slipping on (a) ‘soap’ and breaking a leg is not actively encouraged; in the theatre (particularly when a long-running TV shows is up for dissection) it’s a decided virtue.
on co-workers fight to ensure their hospital does not fall victim to a certain money-grubbing so-and-so, while wrestling with their own demons (and each other) along the way.
From curtain lift to curtain call, Shortland Street – the Musical proves that parody can actually be the sincerest form of flattery, if not wit.
Breaking the third wall with zeal (especially when enlisting the skills of a ‘doctor in the house’), actors trip between mediums with tapdancing, surgical grace, as well as boot-healed, ham-fisted ham-ery, where required. Throughout, the cast seemed to relish every line and fed off the audience’s (sometimes raucous) reactions while making skilled dancing and singing seem effortless.
For many, TVNZ’s Shortland Street has become an (almost) daily dose of drama, and it seems there’s still plenty of life in those old docs yet. As I’ve been only a ‘bit part’ viewer (not exactly encyclopaedic in my knowledge of ‘Shorty’ lore) I did miss a few of the play’s in-jokes but my partner (no fanatic but a definite fan) later filled me in on a few finer points. On the whole, this musical treats its ‘patients’ with a healthy dose of old fashioned Kiwi (somewhat self-deprecating) humour, which is accessible to all-comers. Beginning at the beginning – back when it wasn’t just Harry showing off his, well, you know what! – the show parodies the skewed reality of Ferndale with more a celebratory toast than slight-filled (even spiteful) comedy roast. And yet, it still cooks up ‘poking of the stick’ with scalpel precision as recycled narratives and characters, clichéd social commentary, bedhopping, cliff-hangers and various other soapie tropes are laid bare.

In life, as well as on stage (when filming a daily soap too, often as not) there are no second takes. Fortunately, this (largely young) cast needed none. All were well and truly on song, no doubt learning a great deal about treading the boards from veteran thespian Mark Hadlow (playing both Dr Michael McKenna and Sir Bruce Warner) in the process. Seeing many past and present actors from the TV show in the audience, joining in on the merriment (and the joke), certainly added to the good spirited nature of the evening as a whole too. Although this madcap work of medical misadventure will be ‘operating in theatres’ nationwide (in March and April), it won’t be on in Auckland much longer. So, my prescription? If you like the TV show, or just enjoy a good laugh, best check out atc.co.nz and secure those tickets... stat! www.southmagazine.co.nz

HOMEMADE CRAFTS FOR When it comes to family Christmas giving we can’t rely soley on Santa to come up with all the goods. Here are two easy craft activities to encourage youngsters to make gifts or decorations for home or friends.
DIY SNOW GLOBE If you have small plastic tree ornaments that have lost their hooks, and some empty, clear glass jars, encourage children to use them to make snow globes.

HERE’S HOW:
APPRECIATION BUNTING Little hands and imaginations can be kept busy make festive bunting to string under a mantelpiece, across the top of a door frame or under a window frame.
HERE’S HOW: Write something you love about each family member on small cards. Attach them to a string of red and white twine or red or green ribbon
with clothes pegs. In between the notes, peg your own cut out Christmas trees and snowmen or rob a few lightweight items from the decoration box. If you’re partying or hosting friends ahead of Christmas, ensure there are some blank cards for them to write their own notes of appreciation and peg to the string/ribbon then attach your festive bunting where it can be seen and appreciated.
globes are great at this time of year but if the kiddies have super hero figurines or others they want to use, perhaps this can become a fun holiday activity down the track.
Using waterproof superglue, stick the ornament to the lid of the jar so it hangs down and is visible through the glass. Allow to dry completely. Fill the jar with water, a couple of drops of liquid glycerine — generally found in supermarkets – and as much glitter as you’d like. Close the jar tightly, turn it upside down and give it a shake. You can use any plastic object in a snow globe. Christmas theme

OFF THE TABLE FOR DOGS! DR NIKKI FROST, senior vet at Franklin Vets Pukekohe, talks about what not to feed your dog at Christmas.
Yep! It is tough when those big brown eyes are staring forlornly at you but as tempting as it is to share your food with your dog during the festive season, our treats can be extremely dangerous to your canine companion. Here is a list of some the worst offenders and why they make the naughty list. • Grapes and raisins: No one knows exactly why and how these are poisonous to dogs, and the exact volume needed to cause kidney failure is difficult to predict. • Christmas pudding and mince pies: These are full of currants, raisins and sultanas, which are toxic to dogs. Fat and suet can also cause severe stomach troubles, and they can be laced with alcohol which is also poisonous to dogs.
r
461)
Poultry is hollow-boned and the bones splinter whether raw or cooked and so must never be given to your dog under any circumstances. Turkey stuffing and gravy can also cause upset tummies. • Broccoli: A toxic ingredient called isothiocyanate in broccoli can cause stomach upsets and is very harmful if fed in large amounts. • Macadamia nuts: Within 12 hours of ingestion these can cause dogs to experience weakness (especially in the hind limbs) and depression, tremors, vomiting and increased temperature lasting 12 to 48 hours.
• Chocolate: In large enough amounts, chocolate and cocoa products can lead to gastrointestinal upsets, seizures or even kill your dog. Make sure chocolate coins, decorations and presents are kept out of reach. • Onions, Garlic, Chives: These can cause stomach upsets and could lead to red blood cell damage. It takes a few days for signs of poisoning to appear. • Bones: Cooked bones are brittle and splinter easily, which can lead to larger fragments getting ‘stuck’ causing obstructions and smaller causing gut irritation and perforation. Don’t leave bones anywhere they can be found!
• Fat: Ham rind or the drippings from the BBQ tray can lead to upset stomachs or pancreatitis. If you suspect your dog has consumed any of these foods contact us immediately. The quicker treatment is sought, the easier and more successful it will be. The bottom line – don’t let your dogs anywhere near human treats at Christmas, however much they appear to love them.

With the kitten season upon us there are both benefits and disadvantages. On the plus side, summer is the perfect time to add a furry friend to your home; people typically have more time to spend helping them settle into their new environment and daily routine. However, while surprising a friend or loved one with a pet at Christmas may seem like a good idea, it doesn’t always end well for the animal. Every January, animal shelters deal with abandoned pets which are unwanted Christmas presents – many new owners just aren’t prepared for the commitment that comes with responsible pet ownership.
SPCA CEO, Andrea Midgen says animal owners need to be fully committed for the animal’s whole life.

FOR CHRISTMAS?
The SPCA strongly encourages New Zealanders to always check with the recipient before gifting pets as Christmas gifts and if it is for a child in their own home, remember to take into account any care needed if going on holiday in the New Year.

“If you have had a conversation with the recipient and they are ready to take on this responsibility, then adopting a pet from the SPCA is a great
way to go. But remember, the cost of any pet ownership goes beyond just vet bills. It extends to paying for food, de-sexing, dog registration, and ideally pet insurance. Then there’s bedding, toys, shelter, and grooming expenses too.” For those who have done their homework and understand the responsibility that comes with pet ownership, adopting over the New Year period is an ideal time as generally there is plenty of choice and those on holiday can really get to know their new family member. What’s more, adopting from the SPCA means puss (or other pets) will be healthy, behaviour tested, desexed and microchipped. Importantly, the SPCA team will be able to match your family to the perfect pet for your needs and lifestyle. Visit your local SPCA centre or visit www.spca.nz/adopt to see which animals are looking for a forever home. However, if it is not practical to own a pet but you want to help, consider making a donation to the SPCA whose resources are stretched at this time of year when demands for accommodation, food and medical care mount as kittens come in by the score. south | december 2018 |

A skipper’s life on ‘C’ Although the age of steam has passed, enthusiasts continue to stoke its smouldering fires. Dancing back and forth from ship to shore with a ‘grace’ Fred Astaire would have admired, the William C Daldy’s crew (many past retirement age) complete the noisy work of restocking the ship’s coal supplies – modern stevedores, eat your hearts out! Despite their age, this crew is no ragtag Dad’s Army. Case in point: Keith Ingram, one of the ship’s skippers. “You never retire, you die!” he quips, his voice booming, clearly audible over the racket as coal piles into the hull of this grand old lady. I ask Keith what he reckons renowned seafarer and politician, William Crush Daldy, after whom the ship is named, would think if he could see this hardy tug still puffing along more than 80 years since she first put to sea, especially when she grazes the wharf on docking. “Being an old seadog himself, I think he’d smile and give us a nod of approval... even when we leave her ‘signature’ on the wharf,” the Bucklands Beach local smiles.

AUCKLAND ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND – CITY OF SAILS AT FULL STEAM The prospect of snacking on a salty old seadog doesn’t seem too appetising but Keith Ingram swears by them and, come the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta weekend, Daldy Dogs (hotdogs heated by the WC Daldy’s steam engines) are sure to be a hot ticket item.
Christmas, all hands keen to experience the regatta best book passage quick, Keith advises.
However, as tickets for cruises during the festivities (including the event’s famous tug boat race) will likely be sold out by
“We won it one year and she’ll have a clean bum this year (we’ve just come out of dry-dock) so I think we’ll give the modern

ships a bit of a tickle up this time around.” Anniversary Day weekend may be the perfect time to experience the old tug in action (see daldy. co.nz for details), but there are regular cruises from September through until April. In addition, enthusiastic visitors are welcome to drop by her berth at Hobson Wharf most weekends where they’ll often find an old hand on hand to show them around.
29/11/2018 4:12:42 p.m.
The William C Daldy is no ‘Little Toot’, this hardy octogenarian is more a Tuffy the Tugboat, still putting to sea long since her formal working days came to an end. During Auckland Anniversary Regatta Weekend, it’ll be a case of anchors aweigh as this hardy steamship cruises the Waitamata, as JON RAWLINSON explains.
I was about 15, ‘Keith, my boy, given that you’re always looking out the window, over the horizon, it’s best you follow your dreams!’ So, I ran away to sea. Well, I went to Gisborne and haunted the waterfront trying to get a job on boats,” he recalls.
“With all due respect to William Crush, this ship is an old bitch, but she grows on you. She needs a lot of tender loving care and has expensive habits, high maintenance. But, as long as we take it easy, she’s very forgiving and just an excellent ship to skipper,” In his seventies, Keith is a bit of an old seadog himself. This retired Royal New Zealand Navy Petty Officer has served in a variety of roles involving the sea for most of his life, from fishing to working as an operations’ manager for Fullers. A past Commodore of Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, he is also publisher of Professional Skipper magazine. “My teacher said to me, when
“Like a lot of young fellows, I soon got into a wee bit of trouble and was encouraged to join the Navy; it was the making of me; I thrived and served the thick end of 10 years.” Despite leaving the Navy due to hearing issues, Keith has no trouble hearing me over the cacophony outside; I guess when it comes to any nautical talk, this man could hear a pin drop. In the 1990s, Keith first set sail on his current ‘voyage’. Joining
the William C Daldy Preservation Society he first served as vicepatron and master. Now, as patron, he’s also tasked with keeping the business side of the society afloat. Many hands may make light work, but firing up a hand-fired, coal burning steamship also requires more than just a tot of skill. “There are 17 steam engines on board, including the two big ‘sewing machines’ connected to the propeller. Everything’s steamdriven, even the [electric] power. We have a dedicated crew including highly experienced engineers passing on their skills,” Keith explains. “We are all volunteers – the only person who gets paid is old William Crush, but he never seems to cash his pay cheque!”
“With all due respect to William Crush, this ship is an old bitch, but she grows on you. She needs a lot of tender loving care and has expensive habits, high maintenance. But, as long as we take it easy, she’s very forgiving and just an excellent ship to skipper.”
To ensure the society (which runs one of just a handful of steamships still operating in New Zealand) stays on course, Keith and crew keep their eyes peeled for new recruits. “Volunteers don’t need any maritime experience but they do need to enthusiastic, willing to learn and to get stuck in. “It’s an honour to be on board and work this ship; it’s a lot of fun with great camaraderie and we’re all proud to be part of history in action.”

“Dirty, hot, horrid...” loving it! With the salt air flooding his nostrils, the William C Daldy’s skipper may think himself in heaven. And yet, down in the bowels of this vintage vessel, Terry Carroll would beg to differ, particularly when burning more than a ton of coal an hour to stay on task and taking up to three days to raise steam. “It’s dirty, hot and horrid but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than with my engine,” the ship’s engineer smiles. “The likes of these ships will never be built again – this one is absolutely authentic and dependant on men with knowledge that’s becoming rarer and rarer.”
A former fireman working on the railways, Terry has long held a fascination with these intriguing machines. “When I wasn’t actually working on steam engines, I did so recreationally. I was always keen on sailing but, except as a passenger, I’d never really been to sea before I started working on this ship; I like ships, whether they’re steam powered or not and the William C Daldy is very special.” Modern craft may rely on sophisticated technology but steamships draw on more complex mechanisms, Terry reveals.
WHEN COAL WAS KING William Crush Daldy first ran away to sea in the early 1800s. More than 200 years later and (in a manner of speaking) he’s still there... in spirit at least. Although the master mariner himself laid down anchor (at home in Cockle Bay’s historic Shamrock Cottage) many years ago, since the 1930s a steamship has carried on his legacy. Built in Scotland in 1935, the William C Daldy provided tireless service to the Auckland Harbour Board for more than 40 years. During this time, perhaps her
South December 2018.indd 14
greatest endeavour was to save the Auckland Harbour Bridge from catastrophe, one of the ship’s skippers, Keith Ingram, explains: “They were moving one of the big central spans, balanced on barges, when a stormy squall came through; a healthy sou’wester. “The barges were just about blown away; if they had’ve been, the whole thing would have tumbled into the sea, making a hell of a mess and putting the construction of the bridge back by at least a year.
“There are no computers to think for you, it’s got to be up here,” he says tapping his head sagely. “Each steam has its own personality. You need eyes in the back of your head, constantly looking, listening and smelling – that’s the only way to detect a problem. You’re right there in the thick of it, relying on experience to see you through and, if you forget something, well, you’re in trouble.” While Terry has helped keep the WC Daldy’s fires burning for more than a quarter of a century, his fellow engineer, George Armatage, has been at ‘the coalface’ even longer; in fact, the ex-merchant navy man
“So, with a full load of good Southland coal on board, the Daldy steamed at full pull to keep the barges and their load in place for 36 hours – she burned just over 40 tonnes of coal and saved the day.” Retired in 1977, the William C. Daldy was saved from being resigned to the pages of history thanks to Captain Neil Hudson. Initially leased from the Auckland Harbour Board, the ship was purchased for a peppercorn fee. “Captain Hudson [took over the ship] on the understanding that she would be restored because she was at the end of her working life and looking pretty scruffy,” confirms Keith. “They then formed the society and purchased the ship
George Armatage (top) and Terry Carroll (above) – long serving engineers. Photo Wayne Martin/supplied lives on board. “He’s the only thing we have that’s older than the ship!” skipper, Keith Ingram, jokes. “George is a very skilled engineer who spends a lot of time training the younger guys. There’s an art in firing these boilers; young people think they just shovel coal and she’s all good but I stand in awe of George and Terry at work,

Daldy began a new life as a ‘living’, steaming museum. “Although he’s in his eighties now, Neil’s still involved,” Keith says. “He acts as a guide to passengers and a mentor to the crew, as well as [the society’s] archivist for a long time too. We’re proud to help carry on his good work preserving this grand old ship. “She’s of the age of steam, one of the last ships of her kind. If we don’t keep these ships going, we lose a unique machine from a bygone age.”

Top titles for under the tree There’s nothing like a good book to keep active children still for a little while or to take bored minds into the realm of imagination or creativity. This selection of great books, fostering a love of language and storytelling, make ideal holiday reading and there’s one for parents, too. BABIES & TODDLERS BY KAZ COOKE
THE TOP SECRET UNDERCOVER NOTES OF BUTTON MCGINTY BY RHYS DARBY
Need a ‘how to’ guide for raising little ones? Consult a ‘Cooke’ book! While there may be plenty of experts when it comes to child rearing, there would be few who could match the humour and wit that Kaz brings to the subject. A fun, practical sequel to her highly popular guide Up the Duff, this book is designed to help parents through those early months as well as (shock, horror!) when our little princes and princesses go mobile.
In the first book of what’s almost certain to be a rip roaring series, iconic Kiwi comedian, Rhy Darby, introduces a new hero set to tackle out-of-this-world absurdity. 12-year-old Buttons McGinty has been shipped off to Ranktwerp Island Education Fortress for Gifted Lame Unruly Minors. There are bad guys to best and codes to crack in efforts to locate his missing parents, ‘sew’ Buttons will need to be on his game in this madcap mystery adventure suited to readers aged eight years and older.

OH NO! LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN A delightful read-along picture book, Oh No! Look What the Cat Dragged In is a ‘Joy’ to behold. Written by awardwinning author, Joy H. Davidson, this tale illustrates just how mischievous Grandma’s black cat can be when finding treasures out in the big, wide world. Joy H. Davidson (Illustrated by Jenny Cooper): Oh No! Look What the Cat Dragged In | RRP $21.99| DHD Publishing
THE DINOSAUR THAT POOPED A PRINCESS You have to be intrigued by a story that begins ‘Once upon a poop’! Because poop is funny and tales of princesses and dinosaurs are not as prevalent in ‘the media’ as they should be, we simply can’t help but recommend this book. Can a dinosaur avoid eating everything in sight and do all princesses really need to be rescued? There’s only one way to find out.
If anyone can find a (proper) rhyme for ‘orange’, Peter Millett’s your man! With this book, this award-winning author joins forces with illustrator, Scott Tulloch (no stranger to accolades himself) to create a future classic. Bringing their (very Kiwi) twist to well-known rhymes – such as ‘Old King Cole [who] scored a mighty fine goal’. A fun read for little ones, this book is also likely to appeal to parents who still have a little rebel in them somewhere deep down.
Trust a Kat to tell a top tale about kiwi! In Kuwi the Kiwi’s latest adventure, author Kat Merewether reveals how it can be tricky finding five minutes to relax with a quiet cup of tea – a lesson little ones could do well to remember! From tap-dancing tomtits, to karate-kicking kokako, it seems every creature is intent on interrupting poor Kuwi as this humorous yarn unfolds. What’s more, with 20 cents from the sale of each book supporting kiwi conservation projects, Kuwi’s Rowdy Crowd also provides a valuable lesson about the importance of taking care of our native wonders.

Making music at ACG Strathallan SPONSORED
As the 2018 school year comes to a close, music education at ACG Strathallan in Karaka has never looked brighter thanks to a firstyear teacher with a passion for his trade. Music teacher Josh McKay started in term one. Since then, he has started a choir, rebooted the jazz band, installed a recording studio and is rewriting the music curriculum. An avid musician – he plays countless instruments and has performed on stage nationally and internationally alongside bands such as Six60, Tiki Tane, Bad Manners and the English Beat – Mr McKay sees huge potential to grow the school’s music offering.
student, Luka Wolfgram, was shortlisted for NZ-wide film challenge Outlook for Someday, Luka credited his teacher for his help on the project.
“As a first year teacher, one of my goals is to form relationships with students and engage with their interests. This was an excellent way of doing that.”
Earlier in the year, Mr Mckay had kitted out a recording studio and trained students to record their performances and compositions. He and Luka spent many hours discussing, arranging, recording, mixing and mastering the music for the film.
Luka’s mum, Alex, said it was magic to see what could be created when a teacher gets behind and supports their students with passion and creativity.
“Luka came to me and asked if I would like to be a part of his project. After watching his films, I wanted to help immediately,” Mr McKay said.
ACG Strathallan principal, Danny O’Connor said while the school had always had a good music programme, there was
“Mr Mckay has brought the department to life.”
And his love of music and connection with the students is already making an impact.
a real energy and enthusiasm towards the subject this year. “We have more students opting to study music at IGCSE level and a larger number of students involved in extracurricular music outside of the classroom,” he said. “It’s no surprise that the right teacher can have a huge impact on a subject. If they have a real passion for the subject and they’re enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and skills then it creates a real sense of excitement and a situation where students are inspired to study that subject.”

Island time well spent Visiting Rarotonga on a budget made a late winter getaway to the Cook Islands do-able for cost-conscious traveller ANGELA KEMP.
After childhood holidays spent shivering next to a grey North Sea, I’d always dreamed of visiting a desert island with the obligatory white beaches, azure waters and swaying palms – the sort of place I would escape to in the pages of Gulliver’s Travels read while huddled under a towel to avoid stinging sand being blown into my face. Well, finally my dream became a reality when I bought myself a $125 Jetstar flight to Rarotonga in August. I was travelling solo and determined to have the best time I could on a budget but definitely not on the cheap. After securing my flights (which I upgraded to $200 seats so I could bring a suitcase) I researched the accommodation options and was lucky to find a gem on Air BnB for $100 a night, owned by James and Adinda Beer. Set in a large garden, which led down to the beach, I fell asleep to the sound of waves breaking on the reef and wind whispering through palm trees. Welcome to Paradise. The accommodation was stylish, tidy and suitable for three people with a well equipped kitchen, www.southmagazine.co.nz

international – to keep your energy up while looking around.
The island’s half hourly bus service stopped nearby and I happily paid $5 to ride into the biggest town, Avaruato, or to one of many idyllic beaches reached via a circular tour of the island (about an hour).
Rarotonga is just 32kms around the ring road and has a local population of 13,000, although visitors from mainly New Zealand and Australia swell that number by nearly 20,000 in the busiest months of July and August.
Currency is New Zealand dollars and the prices are more or less what you would expect to pay at home - $4-$5 for a flat white, $20 for a pizza, $6 for a toasted sandwich. There are some excellent cafes where the food and coffee is first rate – the LBV in Muri and Beluga Café, near my accommodation in Arorangi, exceptionally so. I ate at the Muri Night Markets where you can get local fish specialities, through to curries and burgers. Prices are on par or slightly higher than Auckland. Tip: buy from the stall with the longest queue. Every Saturday the Punanga Nui marketplace is packed with stalls where shoppers can buy anything from fresh coconuts, local fruits and vegetables and handmade quilts to a never-ending selection of sarongs. There are plenty of food options – local and
However, fears that my desert island dream could be shattered by hoards of tourists were totally unfounded. Day after glorious day, I sat on a deserted beach leaving my book in the shade of a palm to dip into the sea with my snorkel mask, an activity which was both priceless and free. My budget stretched to a couple of island activities I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to miss not least a trip on a Koka Lagoon tour ($80). It was fun from get to go, thanks to its talented musical crew; it was a highlight of my holiday.
of coconut tree climbing and the multifarious ways of tying a sarong. My second treat was to the world class Te Vara Nui Village show in Muri ($120). A fabulous buffet which included local delicacies such as ika mata and poke, along with international dishes, was served after a stunning show. I was bewitched as Rarotonga’s finest dancers and musicians performed by flaming torchlight on floating and fixed stages in the waterfall garden. It was a truly magical experience. My holiday lasted nine nights and I loved every minute. I lived simply and never felt anything but totally relaxed. Would I recommend Rarotonga? Definitely. Will I return? Most certainly.
The glass-bottomed boat took us out towards the reef where trevally, mullet and little tropical fish darted about in abundance. Snorkeling gear was provided for those who wanted a closer look then it was back on the boat and a short ride to Honeymoon Island for a barbecue and demonstrations south | december 2018 |

Mission’s festive favourite These days, the bird’s not the only word at Christmas. And yet, despite the plethora of goodies now available, to ensure we ‘pig out’ in traditional style, no festive feast would not be complete without...
Christmas ham Ingredients: • Smoked holly ham, water added, ham hock removed 400g • Light brown sugar 1 cup (200g) • Clover honey
Method: Adjust the oven racks to accommodate a large covered roasting pan. Fit the pan with a shallow rack. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Unwrap the ham and rinse it in cold water. Place it on the rack in the roasting pan. Cover the pan with the lid and bake for half the estimated cooking time (Total cooking time is about 20 minutes per pound.)
Wine match – Reserve Chardonnay or Reserve Pinot Noir Halfway through the estimated cooking time add the sugar and honey to a saucepan; cook over medium heat until smooth and sugar is dissolved. Pour the mixture over the ham and continue baking the ham, basting
occasionally with the drippings in the roaster. Check for doneness at the end of the estimated cooking time by inserting a meat thermometer at a meaty point (not into fat or touching the bone).
It should register 71°C. Allow the ham to stand for 15 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to set. Thanks & Merry Christmas to our good mates at Napier’s Mission Estate!

Beauty in a box ‘Serials’ have been a popular form of story-telling on radio, television and, in bygone years, ahead of the main movie at afternoon cinema screenings – no one wanted to miss an episode! Now an enterprising mother and daughter team have launched Serial Box – a monthly booty of beauty which has recipients eagerly awaiting what surprises the next delivery will contain. HELEN Perry talked to the scheme’s architects.
Pukekohe’s Jessie Charlton and her mother Judith Grant, are acutely aware that many people, women, in particular, put aside their needs for those of the family – they ensure everyone else has treats while they do without.
While Serial Box is by subscription, there is no contract and boxes can be cancelled at any time. It’s also possible to buy a one-off box as a gift; themed specialty or seasonal boxes are among offerings.
So, when exploring options for a joint business venture, the pair thought about busy mums who may have little time, and sometimes limited funds, for their own pleasure.
“Importantly, recipients don’t need to make an appointment to travel elsewhere for this treat,” Jessie says. “They can sit down in the evening, perhaps after children are in bed, and just enjoy their goodies.”
And, it’s easy to see why Jessie, in particular, might relate to caregivers whose priority is their family. She has seven children – six girls and a boy aged 18 months to 18 years. “But, I’m probably no busier than any other mother or caregiver,” she says. “Yes, I have a big family but I’m a stay-at-home mum so my time is all about the family. However, women who work, and have children, are just as busy, maybe busier. They have day jobs, but still need to meet the needs of their children, organising after-school activities, weekend sports, homework and more while generally managing housework and other commitments.”
At $39 a box, Judith says recipients can expect excellent value and, better still, $3 from each box can go towards a school of their choice. “We decided when we started that we wanted Serial Box to also benefit the wider community. Schools register with us then subscribers just nominate which school on the list they wish their $3 contribution to go to.” While subscribers enjoy all the fun of opening their beauty box, Judith and Jessie enjoy the process of sourcing goods and packing the boxes.
Regardless of the demands on busy women – work and family – Judith and Jessie says the Serial Box is a way they can treat themselves to a range of goodies once a month with little effort required.
“We source direct from manufacturers and each box usually contains at least five full sized products. We also like to support small New Zealand companies by including at least two Kiwi brands,” Jessie says.
“They don’t have to go anywhere to purchase or pick up the box; it arrives at the same time each month and each delivery contains a very different array of beauty products. For example, one might be contain skin care, another makeup and another, hair products. What’s more, within each category the range of products varies enormously.”
“We’ve discovered there are amazing women out there developing creditable cosmetic and skin care products, using natural ingredients. For some it’s a way of earning an income often while they have dependent children at home. We feel it is important to encourage them and give their products a boost by bringing them to the market.”

SERIAL SAGA CONTINUES... Every month, Judith Grant and her daughter Jessie Charlton, meet at Judith’s Point View Drive home to pack a few hundred beauty boxes destined for Serial Box subscribers. Each box contains an assortment of full size products ranging from skin care through to cosmetics, hair care, foot pampering and more – at $39 each (with $3 benefitting a school of the recipient’s choice) they are intended to offer all round value. “Until recently my husband Mac and I owned and operated a small company specialising in Noni Juice – known for its concentration of vitamins, minerals anti-oxidants – which comes from the Noni tree (Morinda Citrifolia), prevalent throughout the Pacific and South East Asia,” Judith says.

“We sold the business 18 months ago but because of our interest in natural ingredients which assist health and wellbeing, it meant Jessie and I again looked in this general direction when considering a business we could manage together.”

Since the launch of Serial Box, in May, just ahead of Mother’s Day, effective marketing via the website, FaceBook and Instagram, has seen its popularity on the rise, so much so the women are now looking beyond beauty products.
in the pipeline” says Jessie who was raised in Howick but settled in Pukekohe some 18 years ago, attracted by the advantages of semi rural living for her young family and still enamoured by everything the district offers. “The tea box will contain the likes of a glass diffuser teapot, tea accessories and, of course, a range of delicious teas. We’re working on this at the moment whilst also putting together some wonderful treats and surprises for our boxes over the next few months. But that’s not all; this entrepreneurial duo is now looking to develop a natural skin care range, which they have called Ma, the moniker given to Judith by her grandchildren. “Recently we did an ABC box – argan, body butter and coconut,” Judith says. “We know we can access some gorgeous, natural ingredients from throughout New Zealand and the Pacific so it seems logical to make our own skin care range.” The pair say Serial Box subscribers can expect to see the Ma collection in their beauty boxes early next year – now who wouldn’t say “beaut!’ to that?

Artist’s work has gone to the dogs (and cats) No doubt you are looking at the images and thinking what handsome cats and dogs these are. Well look Tatiana taught herself the craft again – these are in fact small through a kit and a book but perfectly formed felted and soon realised she had a natural talent for capturing not creations by Ardmore fibre only the looks, but the essence artist, Tatiana Kalnins. of an animal, especially favourite She talked to family pets. ANGELA KEMP Involved for many years in about her training Sofie her Blue Heeler and instructing dog training in canine You could work. be forgiven for doing a double take when you first see one of Tatiana’s highly detailed, needle felted miniature animals as each exudes its own unique personality and energy. With a background in animal behaviour and zoology plus a recently completed PhD in Education for Sustainability, Tatiana has been making felted miniature animals – mainly dogs and cats – for some two and a half years. She receives commissions from across the world and is currently working on at least 10 including a life size white rabbit destined for Canada.
freestyle and other dog sports, she says all has helped inform her work.
Tatiana’s first project was making a figure of Sofie and it took off from there. “Most of my work is selftaught. I like to make things and I’m interested in animal behaviour; I like to think that comes through in the miniatures,” she says. “While some fibre artists aim for
a ‘faux taxidermy look’, that’s not really me. I look on the miniatures as fibre art with a very close resemblance to the actual animal. I try to achieve accuracy without the animals looking stilted or stuffed. I want them to look as if they are about to get up and walk away.” Having spent many years teaching art to children and adults, Tatiana says she tells her students to work hard on finding their own style in whatever medium they are working. “With the felting, my style is focused on capturing the nuances of expression and personality of each animal. I don’t want my fibre art to look like it’s come out of a machine.” Tatiana’s father is a Professor of Mathematics at Waikato University while her mother is the artistic side of the family and managed the Waikato Society of Arts School in Hamilton for more than 20 years. “As a result, I grew up with an interest in science on one side and an interest in arts on the other. It’s perhaps no surprise that I combine the two.” Also a talented painter using acrylics and watercolour, Tatiana’s journey to animal felting started 11 years ago when the aforementioned Sofie (the Blue Heeler) joined the family. Sofie came with a few challenging behavioural issues so Tatiana joined the Manukau Dog Training Club which led her to participate in dog training classes, specifically heelwork to music. Through dog training groups on Facebook, she chanced upon a post from someone making felted animals which sparked her interest in learning more about the craft. Now, with her own Facebook page, Tatiana has amassed an impressive tally of more than 5000 followers from all over the world.
www.southmagazine.co.nz
South December 2018.indd 33
She uses natural fibres sourced from throughout New Zealand and from many international specialty providers. “My works are intended to be artistic fibre sculptures, and I try to create as much of my animals out of fibre as possible so even the tongues, teeth and lips are generally felted. The exceptions are the eyes which are glass and the noses which are polymer clay which I make myself.” Materials include merino, corriedale, alpaca, mohair and silk – all helping to create and finish the miniatures as realistically as possible. They can take 20 or more hours to make and cost from $350 each. Tatiana works from photographs and says the most time-consuming part is creating the faces and blending the fibres to create a realistic coat. “I aim for naturalistic colour gradings throughout and to get facial expressions just right. I enjoy the natural evolution of my work and I’m always looking for new materials and to apply new techniques.” Many of Tatiana’s creations are commissioned in memory of a much loved and lost pet. “It’s hugely satisfying to be able to do something which means so much to other people. I know how much my dog means to me and if I can make something that helps someone remember their pet and make them happy, then I’m happy.” And, her clients are indeed happy. There are many who have subsequently ordered more miniatures for themselves or of a friend’s animal as a surprise gift. You can see more of Tatiana’s work on her Facebook page. Grand designs may have reigned ‘supreme’ at the recent Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year Awards, but a more humble abode also hit a home run with judges. “We were a little surprised to win; it’s pretty awesome,” Andrew Butts from Waiau Pa-based Precision Homes says, “We’ve won golds and silver awards every time we’ve entered over the last few years, but I thought being named a national winner was a bit out of reach.” The company claimed the New Home $450,000 - $550,000 award for a beautiful two bedroom bungalow in rural Waiau Pa. Judges praised the home for its wellbalanced design and functionality. “We had a good feeling about this one,” Andrew adds. “We take pride in our work, and entrench that attitude in the boys. This home is a
good example of our workmanship and it’s realised a 10-year dream for the client.” Christchurch companies Metzger Builders and Takahe Construction secured top honours overall for Supreme House of the Year and Supreme Renovation of the Year (respectively) as well as other accolades. A complete list of this year’s winning efforts is accessible via houseoftheyear.co.nz.

Festive
FINNISH-ING TOUCHES THIS MUCH IS TONTTU: Although Finns traditionally decorate their homes with ornaments made of straw during the festive season, these cute little creations are quite common too.
Known as Tonttu (tomte in Swedish) these elf-like characters welcome (or tervetuloa) visitors into homes throughout Scandinavia. Effectively, they take care of people’s homes, and it is important to treat them with respect. Finnish-based Aarikka has a wide
range of tonttu and products can be ordered and shipped worldwide via aarikka.com. Also, check out their reindeer ornament as what’s Christmas without Rudolf? And, of course, the ‘make-your-own’ kits in case you’re in need of a little (drummer boy drum roll here please)... ‘self-elf’!

BUSINESS SELLERS BEWARE: PERILS OF TRANSFERRING CONTRACTS Nicola oldridge is an experienced lawyer in Franklin Law’s commercial team, and works in our Pukekohe and Waiuku offices. She has a particular interest in assisting clients with the understanding of their commercial structures and assisting with business transactions, including franchise agreements and terms of trade.
Summer prep before going on holiday
When selling your business, most likely you will transfer certain business contracts (customer contracts or supply contracts) to the buyer.
MURRAY AND DEBBIE GARLAND, Signature Homes Papakura/Franklin offer advice on building a new home. With the holiday period fast approaching it’s timely to keep in mind a few things to ensure your house is safe while you are away.
cept e m
Make sure your home looks lived-in You don’t want that stack of newspapers to let potential burglars know you are away on holiday. To avoid making your house look empty follow these tips:
perty o.nz.
• Stop your newspaper delivery and mail. • Park your car inside the garage, not on the street. • Ensure one of your household lights is on a timer. • Install a motion-activated sensor on an outdoor floodlight. • If you plan to be away for a long time book a gardener and lawn-mowing contractor to make sure the grass is trimmed and gardens don’t look overgrown.

Take plumbing and electrical precautions
If you are selling the business before the end of the contract, you must contact Ricoh, explain that the business is being sold and obtain their approval to transfer the contract to the new owner. The new owner must also agree to the transfer of the contract.
Refrigerators and freezers will be a drain on your power and finances and will increase the chances of something going wrong. Avoid the expense and headache of an appliance calamity while you’re away: • Unplug all appliances and electronic devices – turn switches to off. • Be sure to turn off water valves to the dishwasher, washing machine and all sinks. • Remember the thermostat isn’t just for you. Make sure you set the temperature to a level which still protects plants, pets and furniture. If you’re in the market to build be sure you visit one of our showhomes over the holiday period or contact one of our team today on 0800 828 822 or email garland@signature.co.nz. Have a safe and happy holiday.

If crucial business contracts cannot be transferred, this could be a deal breaker for any buyer of your business. Before signing any agreement to sell, you should ensure that you either have the ability to transfer existing contracts to the new owner or, if some contracts are not required for the sale, the ability to cancel those contracts. Careful review of all contracts will reveal how transfer can occur (either assignment or novation), with each method having different consequences for the parties. Sometimes contracts can’t be transferred and a new contract has to be negotiated. Assignment is when one party to an existing contract (the “assignor”) transfers the contract’s obligations and benefits to another party (the “assignee”).
HOUSE & LAND PACKAGES AVAILABLE NOW
When an assignment occurs, the assignee steps into the
A common assignment is the transfer of the lease for the business premises. Using the Ricoh example, you assign the contract to the assignee (the buyer) with the approval of Ricoh. The assignee will then step into your shoes as the contracting party with Ricoh for the balance of the five year term. Novation is when a contract between A and B is replaced with a contract between A and C. Again using the Ricoh example, Ricoh’s (party A) rights and obligations are unchanged except Ricoh’s contract is no longer with the seller (party B) but is now with the buyer (party C). From the date of novation party C will have the same rights and obligations as party B under the original contract however, the contract between party A and party B has now ended. Consideration is needed as to any consequences if a buyer does not require certain contracts. Again in the Ricoh example, if the buyer does not require the photocopier, what is the cost of cancelling the contract with Ricoh? We recommend that before selling your business you review all contracts, obtain legal advice on which contracts can be transferred or not and understand possible consequences. This will assist in achieving the desired outcome from the sale of the business and minimise surprises.

NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM
As Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, LANE and MELISSA VAN DEN BRINK come to the end of a busy year they look forward to relaxation and family time.
With Christmas upon us, it’s been a busy couple of months finishing projects before the year’s end for some of our clients who will have beautiful new bathrooms and decks ready for the summer period.
At this stage investment trends in the market seem to be remaining constant despite the raft of government/legislation interventions such as increased tenant rights, bright line test extension, looming tax ring fencing for rental losses, potential capital gain/income tax, all of which has the potential to make this market unattractive to investors
With summer break planning underway, we thought we’d move away from talking renovations and share some of the activities and secret spots our team are looking forward to!
LANE AND MELISSA – OWNERS “With three young children we spend as much time as we can outdoors, whether it’s finding somewhere to take the bikes to ride or a local beach to go swimming. There are some great spots around the district, but we find the best option for the 3-year-olds is to cycle the footpath around the Pukekohe rugby fields, where they can play at the park and then go on to stop at Pokeno for ice cream.”
LANCE – PROJECT MANAGER “We are very lucky in this part of the world to have two major coastlines within an hour’s drive.
Harcourts Pukekohe real estate salesperson, JO-ANN DAY-TOWNSEND, gives an update on the real estate and market happenings.
There’s been a lot of market activity in October and some of this may be the result of overseas investors rushing to buy before the October 22 deadline ahead of rule changes.
We are all looking forward to a few weeks holiday to recharge the batteries and to spend time with our families.
Both have plenty of public access especially for keen anglers. Kawakawa Bay boat ramp is our go-to because volunteers often man the facility on the weekends and keep my son occupied while I park the trailer. Closer to home my wife and daughter enjoy the many shops and cafes on offer in Pukekohe township. Town Mouse and C3 cafes are favourites.” We hope you all have a good break and enjoy spending valuable time with your families. We will be closed from December 21st and back on January 14, refreshed and ready to renovate more homes across the district.

Taking a break!
For the 14th consecutive time the Royal Bank of New Zealand has kept the OCR rate low at 1.75% [source Core logic] and it is suggested this may remain that way until late 2020 therefore low mortgage rates are far from being over. NO OF SALES
October 2016
Areas where property values have been in excess of $1,000,000 have seen a slowdown in their growth rate as banks’ affordability constraints start to take effect. This has meant there has been a consistent level of interest from first time buyers which is encouraging as they are good gauge of market confidence. The start of spring has put some energy into the market which is traditionally high at this time of the year but certainly not as much as in previous years. But, even with a surge in listings, the number of properties for sale remains low. This will keep values on or near their current levels. That said, now is a great time to list. Less competition in the market means buyers will be looking at your property and that increases it chances of selling for the best price. October 2017 October 2018

From America with love By Alistair Davidson Acadia LTZ-V rolls on 20” wheels and has FlexRide Adaptive Suspension. Photo Alistair Davidson
As the Holden Acadia LTZ crested the twisty climb between Whangamata and Waihi the Japanese sedan, which had been balking my progress, pulled over to let me pass. Why? Possibly surprise rather than courtesy I reckon. I’d wager that the last thing that sedan driver expected to fill his rear view mirror on that climb was a massive trucklike SUV grille that could suck the Statue of Liberty clean off Liberty Island. It wasn’t that I was speeding, tailgating or driving aggressively. It was because this Tennessee, America built seven-seater is quick and composed through corners. Amazingly this happened not once but three times, proving that Acadia’s imposing presence is indeed a real thing. There were three Holden Acadias travelling in convoy during Holden NZ’s Thanksgiving Day-themed media launch. FBI jackets, earpieces and a ‘Criminal Minds’ soundtrack wouldn’t have been out of place. First stop was a New York style pizza joint in South Auckland for lunch. After idling Acadia through that massive parking lot (otherwise
known as the Southern Motorway) we tackled the Kopu-Hikuai Road to Whangamata, then on to Tauranga via some delightfully engaging roads near Waihi.
engine and transmission package you’ll find in new Commodore, albeit with a minor re-tune, and changes to the auto’s programming.
Naturally dinner was at an American-themed steak house (mmmmm… ribs); then the next day back to a 50s themed US diner in Mission Bay for lunch, via Te Aroha.
Although maximum torque at 5000rpm sounds high, Acadia feels like it has plenty of pull from much lower in the rev range. This is helped by the auto’s willingness to seamlessly drop down a gear or two without much provocation.
The 480km route was a great opportunity to evaluate Acadia’s smooth and responsive 231kW and 367Nm 3.6 litre V6 and nine-speed automatic. It’s basically the same petrol
