MORE OPTIONS THAN dentures

Prosthodontist, JOHN BELL, talks about alternatives to dentures and ways to improve your smile.

Your smile is one of the first things others will notice about you. Discoloured, missing or broken teeth will certainly influence the way strangers and friends react to you.

A great smile is the way to create an immediate good impression. This can influence many aspects of your life from personal relationships to employment opportunities.

In my (many) years of dental practice, I have seen the evolution of numerous new technologies which make the restoration of not only smiles, but eating function, predictable and long lasting.

Partial or full dentures were once the only way to replace missing teeth. These are still an option but, today, there are many more options with better looking and more stable results.

Dentures will become loose over time and can also be damaging to the other teeth and gums. These days, implants and bridges offer a stable, comfortable and long term solution which not only looks better but functions better too.

Stained or fractured teeth, which may have old unsightly fillings, can be crowned or veneered. These will restore beauty and function to existing teeth. Often, just replacing stained, old fillings can achieve the desired improvement.

Full dentures which are loose or uncomfortable can often be stabilised with implants and this not only leads to better chewing ability but to greater social confidence as well.

A huge problem I frequently see is patients with inadequate dentures who avoid many foods because they simple can’t eat them. This can lead to nutritional issues, especially in older patients or those with underlying health issues.

As a registered specialist prosthodontist, I not only carry out routine dentistry but have a speciality in that branch of dentistry which specialises in crowns, bridges, implants and dentures.

So, if you would like to have a better smile, improve those old broken teeth or maybe replace inadequate dentures, why not contact us and we can advise you on what is possible?

There are always treatment choices and by discussing these with you we allow you to make the best, informed choice.

Specialist Dentistry available locally

John Bell Dental is a family orientated practice offering a wide range dental treatments from general dentistry to specialised treatment involving crowns, bridges and implants.

Your teeth are important to us and we look forward to welcoming you to our practice.

A MORE aromatic dad!

There was a time when the scent of a man was all about sweat from a day’s toil. But today’s modern male has come a long way and is most likely to indulge in fragrant after shaves, colognes and even perfume.

What better time than Father’s Day to treat the man in your life? However, if fragrances are a new direction for him then he should tag along on the buying trip –there is much to learn.

To help those men starting to experiment here’s a guide to help navigate the dizzying variety of products available.

TYPES – All perfumed fragrances are made by mixing different ratios of essential oils (also called perfume essence) with alcohol. The more essential oils there are in a product, the longer the aroma lingers — and the more expensive the bottle is.

Here’s a breakdown as to how much essential oil is in these products:

• Eau de cologne:

three to five per cent

• Eau de toilette:

six to 12 per cent

• Eau de parfum:

13 to 19 per cent • Perfume: 20 to 40 per cent FRAGRANCES – The intensity of a fragrance should suit your man’s personality and style. The smell should bring up fond memories and feelings of confidence, security and calm. Fruity, aquatic and citrusy notes are great for those who want to project strength, spontaneity and fun. On the other hand, woody, spicy and earthy fragrances, on the other hand, allow the wearer to adopt an air of confidence, virility and mystery.

SAMPLING – Don’t try too many fragrances at once, otherwise it will become almost impossible to tell them apart. Once you’ve found something you like, apply some to the wrist and then wait until the next day to purchase. The delay will let you discern the complexities of the fragrance and decide whether you like wearing it. To start the search for a new fragrance, simply visit a nearby pharmacy, department store or cosmetic counter –knowledgeable staff will be able to help with your selection.
