Editor says...

When I heard the recent proposal for Auckland Council to help fund a 30 plus metre statue of Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, on the headland of Bastion Point, I admit to being in a dilemma.

I’ve always admired the resolve of many cities around the world to feature artworks at every turn (e.g. Aussie neighbour, Melbourne) but when I heard that council was committing an initial $1million dollars towards the Ngati Whatua o Orakei proposal, I was flabbergasted.

money for what is essentially ‘non essential’ particularly when wages in many sectors have barely moved in years yet costs keep rising.

I’ve sucked up Auckland’s fuel tax and grudgingly accept further proposed government fuel taxes, but when council seems to have little civic pride in keeping our berms and many other public places free of rubbish and overgrowth (I wonder what tourists think of them), I am not willing to pay for a statue – no matter now significant – at this time.

Normally, I might have little issue with a fitting and recognisable monumental statue greeting seaborne visitors to Auckland, and being representative of our Maori heritage. But at a time when we are struggling with many social issues from homelessness and housing needs to lack of mental health support, neighbourhood crime such as shop invasions, not to mention Auckland’s biggie – transport and congestion – it seems a friend’s rye comment that perhaps this statue should be a ‘white elephant’ was pretty much on the money.

Of course, how the people of Ngati Whatua o Orakei choose to spend their money is up to them and if they are happy to foot the entire bill then the choice is theirs. It shouldn’t be something with which the rest of Auckland has no choice.

This is not the time to be asking ratepayers to fork out more

Smith’s dream Sometimes it takes more than just a touch of rouge to look the part. Few could attest to that fact better than Warren Dion Smith, as JON RAWLINSON discovered.

Warren Dion Smith has found acceptance among some outlandish creatures indeed. “I once spent 24 hours in a room with goblins,” he laughs. “That’s not something most people can say!”

Despite leaving school aged just 14 – he says bullying played a major part in this decision – the talented hair and makeup artist has come a long way from his rural Mangatangi ‘roots’.

Although awards have been in no short supply for Warren, and he says recognition from one’s peers is always gratefully received, he credits his mum as the driving force behind his success.

After learning the ropes at Papakura’s Neon Flare school, as well as from further study, Warren began working at the Intercontinental Coiffeur salon in Southmall Manurewa; it was there that he first learnt the name of his future boss, Weta co-founder, Sir Richard Taylor.

“The support of family has helped me get through some pretty tough times.

They’ve given me strength and been my backbone.

“Among my clients there were a lot of celebrities and musicians, but I didn’t want to be stuck in a salon for my whole career.

Richard’s mother was one of my clients and she told me all about Peter Jackson and what he was working on. I thought it was something I wanted to be a part of.”

After finishing another course at the Design and Arts College in Christchurch, Warren headed to the capital with a plan in place.

“A friend of mine said ‘Warren, what you have to do is walk into reception and charm the receptionist.’ So I did and soon had an interview with Richard.

The next day I started work as a wig and prosthetics’ maker on King Kong. It happened that quick!”

Although his work has since been recognised worldwide – most recently, named Best Freelance Hair & Make-Up Artist at the prestigious LUX Health, Beauty and Wellness Awards – one of Warren’s first accolades would have to be one of the most coveted worldwide.

“Well, effectively, we won an Oscar!” He corrects my attempt at drawing quite a long bow! “The movie [King Kong] won best Visual Effects. Something like that really is a team effort, because everyone puts so much work into it.”

In addition to King Kong, Warren’s work has helped stitch together such films as The Hobbit trilogy, The Amazing Spiderman 2 and Superman – Man of Steel. He’s also kept busy promoting

“My mum – who recently passed – came to all the awards but she was never really fussed about them. Everyone says she would be so proud but, at the end of the day, an award is just a piece of plastic or glass!”

While acting talent may soak up the spotlight at centre stage, films can either break box-office records or flop based on the quality of work undertaken by those at work behind the scenes.

And, some can involve marathon sessions in the makeup chair, which often requires Warren to draw on skills any good barber would claim as essential.

“Sometimes I don’t talk to the actors at all because they’re trying to get into character. At other times, I effectively become their therapist!” he says. “I’m really good at sharing, listening and just being a shoulder to cry on. If it’s a long session, you can really get to know them well.”

Warren’s work is next set to feature in such upcoming releases as postapocalyptic adventure, Mortal Engines, and New Zealand musical, Daffodils.

Some say: ‘Living well is the best revenge,’ but it appears Warren has left the past where it belongs. “‘Living well’ has been difficult, trying to fit in, but life [is now] amazing; yes, it has worked out very well,” he says.

“I’m really fortunate to have worked with so many amazing artists who have taken me on board or recommended my work to others from all over, which has meant I’ve managed to travel the world... I have been accepted by some of my absolute idols [and] found a place where I really fit in.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

The country’s housing shortage coupled with rising property prices in recent years have not only made it difficult for many people to purchase their own home but deterred some from even trying. However, Franklin local, philippa Farmer, knows the Kiwi dream of home ownership is entirely possible. A mortgage and insurance adviser with Canopy Group, she is adept at sourcing the best finance options and insurance packages as well as showing clients how to maximise Kiwisaver benefits. Today, SOUTH puts to philippa the sort of questions many prospective home owners are asking. what does a mortgage adviser do and why should I use one?

A mortgage adviser is a home loan specialist. The average home buyer might go through the process of applying for a home loan just a few times during their entire life.

A mortgage adviser does it on a weekly basis. The difference between a mortgage adviser and a mortgage manager at the bank is that the former is independent – we work for you, the customer, rather than the lender.

How much do your services cost?

My standard services are at no charge to the customer. If a loan application is successful then I am paid by the lender upon settlement.

Some clients worry that this means the bank won’t give them as good a deal than if they had gone direct; this is not true. The adviser channel is just one way banks get business; other ways are via their own mobile mortgage managers, and within their branches. All these channels actually have a similar cost to the bank and, in reality, the offers obtained by advisers are often superior to what the bank will offer directly as they know advisers have access to many options.

I want to use my Kiwisaver as my first home deposit. How much can I take out?

If you qualify for a first home

withdrawal, then generally you can withdraw the full amount in your fund less $1,000. This means you can access funds you yourself have paid into Kiwisaver, your employer’s contributions, any returns your fund has made and the Member Tax Credits paid in by the government. An exception is if you have transferred your Australian super into your Kiwisaver fund – this is not available to be withdrawn for a first home purchase. what about the Homestart grant, is this different to the first Home withdrawal? yes, it is. The Homestart is additional money paid by the government to help you with your first home deposit. There are a few more eligibility criteria to meet including a maximum purchase price and income caps. If you are buying a new build then you can spend a little more, and your grant will be twice as much, up to $10,000.

Can I use my Kiwisaver withdrawal to purchase bare land? yes you can, but there are some important conditions to be aware of. Firstly, you must intend to build on the land within a certain time frame. If you are also applying for the Homestart grant, then you will need to show that the total cost of your project (land plus build costs) are within the price caps before you

will be approved. you must also use your Kiwisaver withdrawal to complete the purchase of the bare land. you can’t buy the land first and then apply for a withdrawal to fund the build.

I’m struggling to save a 20% deposit, what are my options?

Although standard bank lending criteria states you need a 20% deposit, there are several options for those who don’t quite have enough. Banks are allowed to lend 15% of their residential lending portfolio to borrowers with small deposits. Generally this lending is reserved for existing customers, and your application must be very clean – no bad credit, poor account conduct or marginal servicing ability. There are also a number of non-bank lenders who are not subject to the same restrictions, and who will consider applications for both home buyers and investors who do not have the required deposit for mainstream bank borrowing. Another option is assistance from a friend or family member, commonly known as the bank of Mum and dad! mum and dad are happy to help us with a deposit, how do we do this?

There are several ways parents (or other family members) can help out – gifting, loaning, acting as a guarantor or offering up equity in another property. It’s all about

finding the most suitable way for your specific circumstances, ensuring everyone is on the same page and that whatever is agreed on is recorded in writing. It is also very important for all parties to seek independent legal advice so they understand exactly what they are signing up for.

I have bad credit, does this mean I can’t buy a home?

Not necessarily, although your options may be a bit more limited.

There are lenders who will consider applications from those with bad credit, even discharged bankrupts.

I’ve already been declined by my own bank, so what other options do I have?

Each lender has very different criteria, and often, while you may not qualify with one bank, you may easily fit the criteria of another. There are also non-bank lenders who are not restricted by the reserve Bank, and so are a bit more flexible. The beauty of working with a mortgage adviser is that you only have to complete a single application to gain access to numerous lenders – no running all over town filling in multiple forms at different banks. What’s more, mortgage advisers are aware of the differing lending criteria and are able to assist in choosing the most appropriate lender for your individual circumstances.

Blue Vanuatu Air vanuatu’s wide-reaching call ‘to explore vanuatu’ convinced Eastlife editor HElEN PErry that the time was right to fulfil a long time ambition to visit this Melanesian nation. So, recently, she booked a weeklong escape which also served to celebrate her husband’s retirement after a 55-year working career.

The thought of man about the house coming home from work one day and not going back again – ever – was overwhelming.

For most of his working life he worked six days a week and for the past 20 years he worked every weekend so I wasn’t at all sure how I would cope with his being home every day of the year. rather than deal with it, I decided we should escape – to vanuatu.

I couldn’t have made a wiser decision.

I have fallen in love with the island of Efate and its people and I’m enamoured with Breakas Beach resort where we stayed, about 10 minutes drive from downtown Port vila. right on the foreshore, this adults-only resort (18 years and over) with its ‘20 somethings’, ‘30 somethings’, ‘we’re in our 40’s’ and ‘baby boomers’ too, suited us perfectly.

Built around the year 2000 and owned independently by an Australian businessman, Breakas sits right on the beach among lush rainforest trees and beautiful foliage offering 60 plus individual fale (bures) which were comfortably appointed – I loved the outer, rock-ringed bathrooms, some with semi open air showers, others fully roofed. Indeed, the accommodation was spacious and welcoming with hibiscus flowers adding a colourful Pacific note.

Tiled floors, king size bed, additional divan, outdoor furniture, traditional thatched roofs – their water tightness during one or two heavy downpours, amazed me – and plenty of room to swing our shell welcome necklaces, meant we were very pleasantly accommodated.

Not to be compared with the likes of five star Ballagio in las vegas, nevertheless Breakas was charming and also afforded us privacy but be prepared for no

Tv or WiFi in the fales although television was available in The Hut and free WiFi in the foyer lounge, bar and restaurant.

We especially enjoyed the terrace restaurant which opened to the pool (beautifully lit at night) and the beach front. The bar area at one end, with its daily happy hour, was always well patronised while on the other side, The Hut catered for large dining crowds and also for weddings and small conferences (up to 50 people) amply providing for a variety of needs.

I especially loved the adjacent bijou gazebo, lavishly set for two when romantic occasions call for that special dinner celebration.

This was further complemented by foreshore dining al fresco style when the weather permits, particularly lovely for in house weddings (see sidebar page 14).

There was so much to like about Breakas but for me the appeal

lay in the type of accommodation provided. We could easily have opted for a concrete high-rise or a large, less personal resort, but here, a bond quickly developed between guests with some opting to share outings or to dine together. yet, for those seeking space or quietude, the poolside or beachfront loungers were places to laze while a daily walk along the foreshore or through treed areas generated an atmosphere of calm and beauty. What’s more, accommodation packages nearly always include a half hour massage and a half hour scuba lesson. I didn’t take up the latter but, wow, that massage was heavenly.

I have no compunction about returning to Breakas especially as regular specials such as pay for five days (from $150 per day) and receive an extra two days free, shouldn’t ‘break-as’ the bank. In my mind it fitted the bill perfectly. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Behind every efficient hotel is a good manager and at Breakas Beach Resort, there are not one but two very good managers heading the house.

New Zealand-born, Isaac Boyle has been the resort’s general manager for the past four years although he has been in Vanuatu for eight years all told.

Isaac, whose wife Anna Abbock is Ni Vanuatu and operates a wedding and events service, speaks fluent Bislam (the archipelago’s official language.

“I actually started my hotel career as a chef at the Heritage Hotel in Christchurch,” he says. “I ended up travelling extensively and during that time transitioned from back of house to front of house working or living in Rarotonga, Fiji and now Vanuatu, which has totally become home.

“Both my children were born here and will attend a French speaking school so they will be multi-lingual. I love the community spirit and the warmth

“What’s more, my workplace couldn’t be in a more lovely location with the sea at our door, fresh produce from our community-based garden, and loyal staff. I don’t see me moving back to New Zealand though it’s nice to visit once in a while.”

Isaac says he is particularly lucky to have Roy Ernst as the hotel’s Food and Beverage manager and it didn’t take me long too appreciate why.

FlyING ON A HIGH! I’ve enjoyed my fair share of international travel over the years but never one quite so convivial as that of Air vanuatu’s return flight to New Zealand after my weeklong stay at Port vila.

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a time when virtually the whole flight was in fits of laughter – loud laughter – as we watched the in-house screening of a ‘Candid Camera’ style series of laugh a minute skits.

It started with just a few contained giggles then, gradually, as more people looked up at their screens, the chuckles turned to clamorous guffaws which just accelerated

throughout the programme.

This merry flight, which had nothing to do with cheers in a glass, completely dispelled the grumpiness I was feeling at having to leave behind the warmth of the Ni-vanuatu people and also Breakas Beach resort where we stayed, not to mention the array of diverse dining venues around the island, the crystal clear waters and so much more.

“She recognised him straight away from the publicity shots and he was as suave and handsome in real life as the numerous images she’d viewed on her laptop. But Angela Kemp knew this seemingly benign man was no stranger to danger, violence and death and her heart beat faster for it.”

Okay, a novelist I will never be, but you can’t blame me for trying after an inspirational interview with Franklinbased writer Ian Austin who has recently published his latest crime thriller.

The former detective came relatively late to writing after a super-charged career in the police force both in his native United Kingdom and in New Zealand.

Ian served as a tactical firearms officer, covert surveillance operative and a National Crime Squad trainer. He’s dealt with criminals, some of whom have committed the most heinous of crimes yet he doesn’t have the look of the hardened cop he undoubtedly is.

Having now published three books including, The Ideas Man (2011) and The Agency (2016) the first of a three part series featuring ex-detective Dan Calder, his latest book, The Second Grave has been recently reviewed on Goodreads as ‘a great crime thriller with plenty of suspense’.

It tells the story of Calder leaving his new life in New Zealand to return to England to help his best friend and

ex-partner whose daughter has been arrested in connection with the death of a prostitute.

It should have been published last year but a deeply sad family tragedy meant it was put on hold.

“My son died very suddenly a year ago which meant the

book and just about everything else in my life took second place,” says Ian. “Such dramatic effects make a person re-evaluate all sorts of stuff.

“When Steve died he was 27. The coroner recorded a verdict of death by misadventure. It was horrendous. The career that I’ve had … more than 100 people who have died for whatever reason … nothing can prepare you for when it’s your own child. There’s something deeply wrong about a child going before you.

His talent has been recognised by one of the literary world’s top editors, Stephen Stratford, who also counts Ian Rankin as one of his clients.

“That had a massive effect and although The Second Grave isn’t a morbid tribute to Steve, it’s the embodiment of what I believe matters. It has made me surer than ever about what I believe, and how those things are right for me.

“The process changed for getting it edited and published. The family and I felt Steve’s loss as a physical pain. I wanted to convey that in the book. I’ve ended up with a product that is different to how I originally thought it would turn out, but its feel of authenticity works really well in the story.

“It has enabled me to think through my feelings over the past year, about what I’m doing and why I’m doing it.”

Ian’s partner is artist Sallie Clough and it was she who encouraged him to start writing when he left the police in 2006.

“She has shown me you have to be who you are in this life. I loved every minute of being a policeman but the satisfaction I get from writing is equal to that.

“Sallie releases my creativity. The emotional and psychological aspect of writing has been a real cathartic experience.

I also started doing hot yoga, that’s really helped me deal mentally and physically with what life’s thrown at me.”

The couple live on a lifestyle block in Bombay, highly conducive to artistic proactivity both literary and artistically.

“Writing at home is fantastic, it’s inspirational to just look out of the window.

There’s not been a day when I’ve been stuck for words as I don’t suffer from writer’s block. I know the whole story before I put a word on the laptop.”

Ian has never had any training in creative

“I don’t think he [Stephen] was too keen at the beginning, partly because of the volume of work he had; he’s always in demand.

However, I persuaded him to let me send the first few chapters of ‘The Agency’ and he came back and said he would love to edit my book. He was keen straight away to edit The Second Grave so it was an easy ask.”

The author’s third Dan Calder book, working title, Frozen Summer is already written.

“That will be the end of this trilogy which is the introduction to Dan Calder – not Dan Carter as has been written in a recent review! I’m currently writing my fourth Dan Calder story which was initially going to be set entirely at Auckland Airport over a 10-hour period.

“But because of how things seem to be happening I’ve been advised we really need to internationalise him more. So although the next book will start at Auckland Airport it will swiftly move to America where we hope to attract a US audience in the same way we’ve attracted a British one with The Second Grave.

“I really believe we are on to a good thing and it’s only a matter of time before we get that elusive international publishing deal.”

Goan pork curry Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 5-10 minutes Cooking Time: 60-75 minutes

Heat oil in a large heavy based pan. Add onion and fry until soft. Add garlic, ginger, cinnamon and bay leaf and stir fry for 5 minutes. Add pork and cook until brown all over.

3 Tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 bay leaf 500g NZ pork shoulder steak, diced 1 Tbsp tamarind paste 1/2-1 Tbsp curry powder 1 Tbsp desiccated coconut 150ml plain low fat unsweetened yoghurt 1 Tbsp sugar Freshly ground black pepper 2 Tbsp fresh coriander 1 green chilli, deseeded and chopped (optional)

Stir in curry powder, tamarind paste, coconut and yoghurt.

Cover and cook over a low heat for about one hour or until the pork is tender, stirring occasionally. Add sugar and pepper to taste.

Just before serving, sprinkle the coriander and green chilli over the curry. Serve with steamed rice and vegetables.

great homemade soups, baristamade coffee, homemade scones, muffins and slices as well as the cooked breakfasts available until 2pm. Now, it seems, a carvery and restaurant service is set to complement the cafe – I’m keeping an eye on this one.

Keen pricing, generous meals, a light-filled room and almost too much sun, make weekend brunch/ lunch pretty darn good. SMOKEd SAUSAGE STrOGANOFF (KOrv STrOGANOFF) Serves 4, prep time: 15 mins, Cooking time: 30 mins This is a great Swedish comfort-food classic from The Little Swedish Kitchen, but one you’re unlikely to see served outside of work canteens or someone’s home. It’s usually served with rice, but I like to serve mine with pasta and add a few (elderberry) capers to the sauce for a bit of a kick.

A knob of butter 1 large onion, peeled and finely chopped 350g falukov or smoked sausage, very finely diced 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp dijon mustard 1 tsp paprika 130ml single cream Sea salt and black pepper 400g tagliatelle or pappardelle 2 tbsp capers or eldercapers (see page 287 of The Little Swedish Kitchen • A handful of finely chopped fresh chives

mETHod Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil for the tagliatelle or pappardelle. Put the butter, onion and sausage into a large pan. Fry, stirring occasionally, until the sausage and onion are golden. Add the tomato puree, mustard, paprika and cream, continuing to stir so the flavours mingle, and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Taste for seasoning and adjust to taste. Add the pasta to the pan of boiling water. Cook for 7 minutes (or according to packet instructions). drain the pasta, reserving a small mug full (around 80ml) of pasta water. Add the mug of pasta water to the sausage sauce. Stir in with the capers and take off the heat. Toss the pasta in the sauce until well coated, and sprinkle over the chives. Serve immediately. get ahead: The sauce can be made the day before (just don’t add the chives at this stage) and then warmed up gently when you need it. You can also freeze the sauce in an airtight container for up to a month. Simply add the pasta water as stated above just before serving, and cook the pasta fresh. www.southmagazine.co.nz

• 4 Tbsp extra virgin coconut oil • 1 cup self-rising flour • 3/4 cup + 1/2 cup coconut sugar • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 pottle Coconut Collaborative Natural yoghurt • 1 fresh pineapple • 1 fresh banana • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup • A handful shredded coconut (optional)

mETHod Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius, top and tail the pineapple and cut in quarters lengthways; discard the outer peel and the core.

Cut 1 quarter into wedges and set aside. Cut the remaining pineapple into small bite-size chunks.

In a baking dish, place coconut oil and melt in the oven. While the oil

is in the oven, mix 3/4 cup coconut sugar, coconut yoghurt, cinnamon and flour. If your mixture is too thick, add some pineapple juice or water to loosen slightly.

Pour the flour mixture over the hot melted coconut oil. Quickly toss the pineapple chunks with coconut sugar in a bowl, then drop into the batter with a spoon. Sprinkle over the sliced bananas and bake for 30-40 minutes until cooked and golden.

While the cobbler is in the oven, heat a little coconut oil in a grill pan or a frying pan. Brush the pineapple wedges with maple syrup and cook in pan or under grill until the pineapple is warmed through and golden. Set aside.

Serve the hot cobbler with grilled pineapple wedges, sprinkles of shredded coconut and more Coconut Collaborative yoghurt. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Her name is a contradiction in terms. Rugby may be tough, raw and even savage to the perceptions of some, and yet, to reach its pinnacle also requires grace, passion and deep-set aroha for the game. In this sense, Aroha Savage could not carry a more suitable moniker, JON RAWLINSON believes.

For 18 years, a Storm was raging in New Zealand women’s rugby. dominating the game to a degree that would make a Crusader envious, the Auckland Storm had claimed 15 women’s rugby titles from 16 tournaments. However, when the final whistle blew on the 2016 season, change was in the air as the Counties Manukau Heat held the inaugural Farah Palmer Cup aloft.

“Winning the cup with Counties was massive – it took us three years but we got there,” recalls Heat stalwart, and former Storm loose forward, Aroha Savage.

Although Counties’ failed in its attempt to claim back-to-back titles last year, Aroha is convinced the Heat really will be on the opposition this coming season.

“I was playing in Hong Kong, for valley rFC, at the time [during last year’s final], watching on my phone and jumping up and down throughout – it was pretty heartbreaking to see them lose [to Canterbury, 13-7]. But we’re fully confident about winning back the Farah Palmer Cup this year. We have a lot of younger girls but, no doubt, our senior players can help them through.”

Although her return will bolster the Heat’s pack, the team will miss some outstanding Black Fern firepower out wide.

“Both physically and experience-wise, [renee Wickliffe and Portia Woodman] will be a huge loss to us,” the couple’s former Manurewa club teammate confirms. “But I’m sure we’ll be able to bring along some excellent replacements.”

And, there’s another Heat leader leaving the pack. Coach davida Suasua (nee White) has stepped down leaving Manurewa men’s coach, Jeremy (Jeza) Clark with big boots to fill.

“He has some pretty good ideas.

Hopefully, he’s prepared for a rollercoaster ride, though, because that’s what he’s in for coaching women’s rugby! He’s in for a treat, I think,” Aroha laughs. “davida’s a

massive loss. She’s been like a mother to us so, when she announced her retirement, it was a big shock. Her knowledge and experience will be missed.”

Aroha first joined the Heat in 2013 after winning five titles with Auckland. “davida coached me at Auckland and shifted to Counties about the same time I did,” she says. “Back then, way too many girls missed out on provincial rugby because we were all under Auckland. Counties gave more of us a chance to be seen at that next level. That was the main reason I moved but also because I’m a Counties girl through and through.” despite going through the doldrums, missing out on title wins for two years in a row, it’s unlikely that Aroha’s former crew from the Storm will run out of puff this season. With Portia and renee on its roster, the Bay of Plenty will likely be in the mix too, as will defending champs, Canterbury.

“Auckland’s tradition of success is one that can’t be broken and the team culture there is awesome. They’re definitely going through a lull but they are a really strong side so I do expect to see them in the finals again this year.

“As for Canterbury, they will be rearing to go, for sure! They’ll test Auckland, Counties and Bay of Plenty this year.

The competition is just so tough now so, who knows, they could go backto-back.”

Aroha may have returned to New Zealand after her stint in Hong Kong with her partner (Heat teammate and former Black Fern, rawinia Everitt) but their travelling days are not quite over.

“We’ve been all over the world a lot during the last 10 years, so we wanted to come home and settle down, appreciate life and spend more time with our families,” she says.“We’re still travelling, though – getting down for training and games won’t be easy.”

Heat’s Savage heart

FErNS SET TO FIrE... AGAIN Ferns may be fragile, bending easily in even the lightest of breezes. And yet, when 23 Ferns stand together against their cross-ditch rivals, it’s more often the Wallaroos who are caught on the hop.

The Black Ferns will play the Australian women twice in August, prior to the All Blacks v Wallabies tests; I quickly learn it’s best not to refer to these fixtures as ‘curtain raisers,’ however! “you need to change your wording on that, they’ll be double tests!” says Ferns’ number 8, Aroha Savage, who hopes to add yet another pair of Wallaroo test scalps to her tally.

“Every time I pull on the black jersey it’s special but to be playing before the All Blacks would be amazing... I think we can [win two from two]. All the girls have been training hard and excited to take them on.”

“All the other countries are catching up so it’s getting harder to come up with ways to beat the world. But because most of us have been playing rugby (pretty much) since we could walk – it’s our ‘mother game’ – that has to be an advantage to us.”

Considering the fierce rivalry involved, the Ferns could well serve up quite the main course, leaving the ABs the duty of supplying just desserts during their Bledisloe Cup encounters.

rugby may be New Zealand’s “mother game” but that’s not where Aroha began her sporting run. Before playing her part at three rugby World Cups (winning two), she represented the Kiwi Ferns at the 2009 Women’s rugby league World Cup.

Should she be selected later in the year, Aroha will likely be in the Ferns’ ranks at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

“It is tempting to return to league.

They have a Warriors’ women’s team now and league was my first love so you never know,” she says.

“It sounds like it’ll be a massive experience, playing the USA at that field in particular? I can’t wait! you’re never guaranteed a jersey, though,” she reminds me.

Aroha may need the support of her teammates to break down the opposition when on the field but, as an apprentice builder, she also relies on another team to allow the flexibility required to train and compete.

All going according to plan, the Black Ferns will clip the wings – and centres and props and fullbacks etcetera! – of the Eagles, but our anthem won’t be the first casualty.

“I bloody hope not! If the backing track fails [as it did during the Kiwis v England rugby league fixture earlier this year] I think one of the girls might have to rip the microphone away and show them how it’s done!”

However, no test match is ever a lay down misere and, during her career, Aroha has seen the quality in international women’s rugby rise. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Taming a tiger which won’t change its spots!

Not a stripe in sight! Instead, the large, orange to red tiger lily bloom is covered with tiny dark spots on the petals with six long stamens in the centre – an exotic lady who has mesmerised many an admirer.

Hardy and easy to grow, the tiger lily (lilium lancifolium, sometimes referred to as lilium tigrinum) will adapt to most conditions.

The strong but sweetly scented bloom (which can also be pink or yellow in colour although orange and red are more common) grows to a length of about 4-6cm and a width of about 3cm. Sometimes called, the ditch lily because it is often seen growing wild in ditches, this showy flower is popular in wedding bouquets and for an array of decorative purposes.

Swedish botanist, Carl von linne, is believed to have provided the first Western written descriptions of the tiger lily in 1753. However, in Chinese literature it appears to have been mentioned in 10th century writings which said it was planted in rows for food.

The bulbs of the tiger lily were dug up and boiled or steamed by native Americans too. Said to taste a bit like potatoes, they were considered a delicacy rather than a common food.

In 1804, William Kerr introduced the tiger lily to Britain and by the mid20th century, it was no longer being used as a food having become a favourite garden flower. Its name, however, varies throughout the world. In some parts, it is known as leopard lily (because of its spots) devil lily, Oregon lily, Western Wood lily, and Chalice-Cup lily (because of its shape).

The tiger lily prefers moist, damp, well draining soil. The bulbs are planted in autumn (even later in warmer parts) for mid-summer flowering. Fertiliser is only required if soil is particularly poor and the winter cold helps them to produce.

When planting the bulbs, place 9 to 12 inches apart and about 6 inches

deep in a location with full sun exposure and just a little partial shade. Tiger lilies will adapt to a variety of light conditions.

A notable feature is their resistance to viruses which affect other lilies. While carrying many of these viruses, they don’t seem to damage the tiger lilies. However, these same viruses can spread to other lilies, so remember to plant tiger lilies well away from other lily varieties.

Tiger lilies will survive on normal rainfall. Additional watering is only required if the weather is particularly dry during the growing season. In which case, saturate the ground so the water reaches the plant’s deep roots. An application of mulch will help keep the soil moist and the ground cool. let the ground dry and the plant die back after flowering is complete.

TIPS: • Crowded tiger lilies make for a beautiful flowerbed, so the closer they are, the prettier the results. They do well in a crowded environment.

• If you live in the country or on a farm be aware that rabbits and deer will feed on tiger lilies. To prevent animals from ruining your lily plants, place small amounts of human hair around the base of the plant or on top of the planted area. Human

hair often deters animals from disturbing the plants.

• Much like other types of lilies, you can divide the roots of tiger lilies for transplanting. do this following blooming in late autumn or before blooming in early spring. south | august 2018 |

What we have right here, ladies and gentleman, is quite possibly the ultimate sleeper.

A sleeper is a car that looks all mainstream and proper, but has the kind of performance that will not only knock your socks off, it’ll rip your toenails out at the same time and you’ll enjoy the experience.

BMW’s new M5 is, by the company’s own admission, ‘a luxurious four-door business sedan with a taste for the track’.

And, that’s what makes it crazy, mental fun. M5 doesn’t look a lot different to your everyday 5 Series. No flared guards, no tacky wings and spoilers, no ridiculous graphics. Just a set to tasty wheels, a carbon-fibre roof and a smattering of discreet M5 badges.

is carried over from the previous M5, albeit with a bit of a tickle-up that has boosted power and torque to mind-altering 441kW (close to 600hp) and 750Nm respectively.

M5 is only available with an eight-speed automatic, and it’s a conventional auto, not a dual clutch. Want a manual? Tough luck. But don’t sweat the lack of a third pedal; the auto is superb, and paddle shifts make it entertaining.

The extra grunt and the lack of a manual aren’t M5’s headline news.

For the first time in history, an M car is all-wheel drive (ignoring the M SUVs of course).

BMW M cars and rear-wheel drive have been synonymous for, like, forever, so having the V8 drive all four wheels is a bold departure.

Purists would expect that new M xDrive all-wheel drive would dumb things down. However, even in 4WD mode when the driver gets all excited the stability system (DSC) will allow the rear end to step out a little before bringing everything back in line.

Under that clean, conservative and sneaky styling lurks a V8 that can be sedate when grandma is riding shotgun, yet be as subtle as a plane crash when you have a hankering for an automotive adrenaline rush that just keeps on giving.

in the third mode, 2WD, things get a little crazy. Or at least that’s what the PR says. To activate 2WD the driver also has to switch stability control off. BMW NZ expressly forbade SOUTH from turning DSC off as it’s for track only, and voids the insurance.

So, we’re not going to tell you that in 2WD with DSC off, the M5 can make like a grin-inducing, tyre smoking drift car, because rules are rules, right?

What we can tell you is that with three xDrive modes, three modes for the variable suspension damping and electronic steering, and three modes for the engine characteristics, things can get a tad complicated.

Good news is that there’s a simple solution to this mass of modes.

Find the combinations which suit driving to work in rush hour, and for scaring your passengers stupid during a Sunday morning blast on the backroads, then save, and turn them on and off, with one push of bright red M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel.

Despite the added heft of the

all-wheel drive system, new M5 is slightly lighter than the previous incarnation. And at $199,900, it’s also cheaper.

It’s impossible to single out specific highlights because M5 excels in every regard. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable, which is why SOUTH was happy to leave it in Comfort mode 90 per cent of the time.

Grip is immense, and with so much torque on tap this thing rockets out of corners like you wouldn’t believe. BMW claims a zero to 100km/h time of a mere 3.3 seconds, however overseas testers have recorded 2.8 seconds!

The latest version of BMW’s 4.4-litre V8 engine with M Twin Power turbo technology helped new M5 win World Performance Car 2018.

That’s exotic supercar quick, as in insanely quick, and it’s a four-door luxury sedan with an ultra-plush leather interior, and almost every comfort, safety and convenience feature known to mankind.

What makes this M5 so special is that it isn’t all about technology.

Instead, BMW has gone back to its roots, putting the emphasis on having a seriously good time without even slightly compromising everyday driveability.

Select ‘Sport’ mode and a synthesised exhaust growl that matches engine rpms is played through the car’s stereo system; the engine sounds quieter with the windows down than up, which is weird.
