Welcome to the district Well done!. You have chosen one of the city’s most wonderful locations to make your home, this most beautiful corner of east Auckland where residents enjoy a wealth of lifestyle options and are part of a vibrant community that prides itself on its many man-made facilities and stunning natural heritage. Comprehensive public amenities include several large shopping centres and malls, excellent sports clubs, swimming pools, libraries, kindergartens, schools, picture theatres, community centres, arts centres and more.

4

Bounded by beaches, estuary and countryside, the district is a wonderland of parks and sports grounds. It also features some of the best schools in Auckland and offers families the chance to indulge in many different hobbies and interests.

New residents are encouraged to talk to their neighbours, visit information and community centres and explore the wider area including the rural route to Beachlands and Maraetai and nearby Clevedon.

Central to its character is a settler past and this is well documented at the Howick Historical Village where re-enactment days bring local history to life.

Dine out at the many local restaurants – you’ll find everything from ethnic cafes and convivial taverns to upmarket restaurants with stunning views of the harbour or estuary.

While close to motorways, hospitals and major transport links and just a short drive to Auckland’s CBD or the international airport, nevertheless life in this quarter can seem far removed from the hustle and bustle of big city living.

Discover an array of weekend markets and watch for special events. Most of all just enjoy your new home and district – you are living in a wonderful part of Auckland.

PLACE S O F I NT E RE S T

Fascinating hive of interesting places to visit The region’s history brings with it much character. HOWICK is named after the third Earl Grey, formerly Lord Howick, who was Secretary for the Colonies in the British Parliament and was responsible for the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps immigration scheme. His family home is Howick Hall, Northumberland, England and the present Lord Howick still takes an interest in this small town named for his forbear. Howick’s Maori history and pioneering past is well documented and remnants of both form places of interest today. Some sites visitors may enjoy are: ALL SAINTS CHURCH is considered to be one of New Zealand’s outstanding early buildings. Designed by the Rev F Thatcher, it was pre-fabricated at St John’s College in Auckland and brought to Howick by sea. Completed in November 1847, it was the first building to be erected in Howick, and is now the second oldest church in New Zealand. THE GARDEN OF MEMORIES in Uxbridge Road was land originally bequeathed to the council by the late Miss E M Nixon. Today it is used as a memorial to the Tainui Maori of the district and the early European settlers. SHAMROCK COTTAGE in Selwyn Road, just down from the village, was Howick’s first inn, called “The Royal Hotel”. Built in 1848, it is thought to be the second oldest building in the village, having originally been built as a “wet canteen” (liquor store) for the Fencible soldiers. The cottage was purchased in 1894 by Captain William C Daldy. He gave it its present name, after his first command, the schooner “Shamrock”. This unique building is now used as a restaurant. HOWICK HISTORICAL VILLAGE. Visitors just love the chance to step back in time and experience the past at this wonderful Fencible settlement located within the boundaries of Lloyd Elsmore Park next to the Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Walk around the seven-acre site, and explore gardens and buildings from the 1840 to 1880 period. There are more than 30 original colonial buildings collected on site, including schools, a church, forge and general store. Chat to costumed staff in this living museum, or take a break to savour home-style food and real

All Saints Church coffee in the neighbouring cafe. The museum, cafe and shop are open 7 days from 10am to 4pm. Closed Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. MUSICK POINT beyond Bucklands Beach on the promontory at the end of Tamaki Estuary was a Maori stronghold until 1821, when the Ngapuhi tribe from the North descended upon the district and decimated the local population. The radio station situated on the point is named after pioneer aviator Captain Edwin C Musick. The point provides spectacular views of the Waitemata Harbour. FO GUANG HO SHAN TEMPLE offers a taste of the serene side of life and can be found on the corner of Stancombe and Chapel Rds, Botany South. As well as a place of worship, the Buddhist temple has become a hub for the entire community and a tourist attraction. It hosts many community and cultural events, has a variety of programmes ranging from a Chinese school to calligraphy and traditional folk dancing. The temple’s followers have also built up relationships with many local authorities including the police and city councils to ensure their messages reach the Asian community. A magnificent architectural feat, it is well worth a visit. Howick Historical Village

COMMUNITY

Park life – enjoy the great outdoors East Auckland is blessed with a number of stunning parks. Residents should certainly head to the top of Stockade Hill to enjoy picturesque views of Howick’s stunning coastline and main road, Picton Street. So called due to the erection of a stockade in the nineteenth century to protect settlers, Stockade Hill hosts regular events including ANZAC Day services (April 25) in remembrance of New Zealand’s fallen soldiers. Named after a former mayor of Manukau, Barry Curtis Park, on Chapel Road, offers a range of amenities and events. Although the park is an ongoing development, with wetlands, sports facilities, picnic areas and a large playground, it has quickly become a favourite amongst locals. At 94 hectares, it is one of New Zealand’s largest parks. Located at the tip of a peninsula, Musick Point is a popular spot for wedding photos, fishing, picnicking or to simply take a stroll and observe stunning coastal views.

Undoubtedly, Lloyd Elsmore Park, bordered by Pakuranga and Cascades Rds is one of the best in Auckland. Home to a number of prominent sports clubs and facilities including a free public indoor swimming pool complex, skatebowl and children’s playground plus the adjacent Howick Historical Village, it offers wide open spaces for major events and family outings. In addition our parks encompass some wonderful walkways, ideal for nature lovers to explore the whole area and see native birds and flora. Check out the Rotary Walkway which follows the Tamaki Estuary from Pakuranga to Pigeon Mountain or head for Somerville Rd where one can park before exploring the Mangemangeroa Walkway. Another lovely spot is Murphy’s Bush with its extensive areas of lowland, native Kahikatea forest, tracks and picnic area. Areas such as these are prized by locals, but new residents will find we have many more pleasant places to... ‘park’!

CHURCHES

Spiritual life “I never weary of great churches. It is my favorite kind of mountain scenery. Mankind was never so happily inspired as when it made a cathedral,” said celebrated 19th Century novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Churches, temples and places of worship abound - Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist (just five of the mainstream Christian denominations), a member of one of the inter-denominational churches; or a devotee of any other religion. New residents will love All Saints Church in Howick. Completed in November 1847, it is the second oldest church in New Zealand. New residents will also find modern church complexes as well as congregations meeting in schools, commercial buildings and shared facilities. Our churches are active in the community supporting local projects and providing services like school holiday programmes and youth activities. People seeking spiritual sustenance, guidance and friendship within the religious community, will find local church groups helpful, supportive and welcoming.

Emergency care The region’s newest residents should have no problem finding a family doctor close to home. General practitioners can be found within a short drive of almost any suburban street. Importantly, this eastern quarter is also served by several after-hours clinics with East Care Accident & Medical among the best known for its 24-hour service. East Care has played an integral role in the health of its local community for more than 20 years. Formed in 1988 by a cooperative of 44 local doctors, the 24-hour service has occupied its present purpose-built complex on Botany Road for some 18 years. Over the past decade services have been continually expanded and in 2007 a new building opened at the rear of the original complex and accommodates East Health, a diagnostic laboratory and Dilworth Hearing. The original building incorporates Mercy Radiology, a pharmacy, plaster room, physiotherapy clinic and dentists as well as a comprehensive specialist centre. This convenient specialist centre saves patients a great deal of time by providing co-ordinated facilities with blood tests and x-rays done on-site.

While the greater Howick and Pakuranga area is served by Middlemore Hospital near Papatoetoe, a maternity complex, Botany Downs Maternity Unit, is located in Botany Rd next to East Care A&M and there is an ambulance station at Highland Park. Ormiston Hospital, a private facility at Botany Junction/ Ormiston provides state of the art facilities and technology. Private surgery is carried out by some of the country’s leading surgeons and the hospital features operating theatres, endoscopy suite, 12-bed recovery unit, 16-bed second stage step-down day patient recovery, six-bed close observation unit, in-house physiotherapy available for all post-operative rehabilitation, on-site radiology, pharmacy and cafe. There is also a specialist centre based at the hospital.

Total wellbeing Health and beauty treatment is essential to many of us. Skin and hair care, inner health, sound feet, beautiful hands and a pain-free existence are all part of general wellbeing and for many people, attention to these areas of life take precedence. Local residents will find the district is well endowed with beauty and massage therapists, hairdressers, nail technicians and various health practitioners, including acupuncturists. Whether one is seeking a deep cleansing facial, Thai herbal massage, Traditional Chinese Medicine or a pedicure, there is no end of clinics, studios and salons to choose from. Natural health therapists offer many forms of relief from various problems and conditions, aiming to give their clients relief from distressing conditions. For some, a spa treatment, inner cleansing, hair appointment, skin rejuvenation or massage is a regular ritual not to be missed. Explore your local area and discover a wealth of health and beauty professionals who make relief from stress and tension, together with improved looks and wellbeing, their priority.

HEALTH

Eye health We all know the importance of regular eye testing, especially if there is a family history of poor eyesight or eye disease. In the industrial workplace, eyes at risk can be protected by wearing safety glasses and, remember, driving is impossible if eyesight fails. Holding a driver’s licence is dependent on good vision and motorists are advised to have an eyesight test every two years. Failing eyesight or other severe eyesight problems may be prevented or rectified by consulting an optometrist regularly. While biennial eye testing is recommended there are times when more frequent testing may be required. These include during a child’s growing years when the eye is also growing; in middle life when the focusing system begins to weaken; and in later years when eye health problems begin to occur such as cataracts and glaucoma. Regular eye checks can help preserve eyesight but injuries can still occur. The eye is extremely sensitive and it is easy to aggravate an injury. In almost every instance proper medical aid is advised.

Spot checks essential for skin health With our many beautiful beaches and the spectacular Hauraki Gulf on the doorstep, it’s not surprising that much of the east Auckland population enjoys watersports and outdoor activities. In summer, the beaches are crowded and even in winter they are home to those who love to walk the shoreline. However, beach and water fun generally means more exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma death rates in the world. More than 2000 people are diagnosed annually with the disease and about 200 die from melanoma every year. Malignant melanoma is potentially fatal but early detection can avoid tragic outcomes with surgical removal of lesions being both simple and, in most cases, curative. Other types of skin cancers, while not fatal, can still be dangerous and disfiguring with two out of three people in New Zealand predicted to develop general skin cancers at some stage in their lives.

Signs to look for include lesions or small sores that don’t seem to heal, heal and reappear, or areas that become scaly or form a crust. These can be easily missed (some pre-cancers are as small as a pinhead) so regular skin checks with mole mapping options are strongly advised. In fact, an annual spot check is a wise decision. People with higher risk levels include those who have many, large or unusual moles, those with a family history of skin cancer, or those who have had a skin cancer before. People who have been sunburnt in the past, particularly when young, also have a high risk level as do those with high sun exposure through work, sport or leisure. Melanoma and skin cancers can develop at any time. They have no respect for age or season although the arrival of summer means more sun, faster burn times and increased risk. Everyone needs to “cover up”. Whether lying on the beach, gardening or painting the roof, use sun blocks, wear hats and reduce the time bare skin is exposed to the sun.

Howick Village — Delightfully Different Howick Village has history. Arguably the oldest history in the area. Maori occupied the area for over 800 years, then, in 1847, it was settled by Fencible soldiers and their families. It was the place they called home and was the hub of their community. Today’s Howick Village is still a place to call home and is the vibrant hub of our community. It’s a place to browse and shop at speciality stores, or just take the time to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family at any of the many cafes and restaurants. The Howick Village Market is on every Saturday from 8.00am

until 12.30pm. Here you will find the freshest of seasonal fruits and vegetables, preserves, cheeses, free range eggs, artisan breads, sweets, cakes and biscuits. Choose from smoked or fresh fish, deli meats, dips, sauces and salads, or browse a selection of arts and crafts, gardens and indoor plants. A short stroll down Uxbridge Rd leads to the tranquil and picturesque Howick Beach. To keep in touch, tune in to our local community radio station on 88.1fm or 107.fm, for music, news, sport, community events and notices.

Shops galore at your door The shopping facilities found in the Howick, Pakuranga and Botany areas are as good as any in New Zealand. For example, the Botany Town Centre is one of the biggest combination mall and outdoor shopping centres in Australasia. It offers a mix of chain stores, specialty boutiques and department stores. The centre also includes a Hoyts Cinema, food courts, cafes, banks, medical facilities and supermarkets with a Wednesday night market from 5.30pm. In addition to Botany Town Centre, local residents will find a delightful village atmosphere at Howick which prides itself on its ambience and a largely owner-operated retail environment with many cafes and upmarket bars. Both a library and Uxbridge Centre for Arts and Culture are in the heart of town. Markets are a part of weekend life in Howick Village. On Saturdays the popular farmers’ market with food, produce, plants and gifts operates outside the Information Centre in Picton Street and craft market, Classy Crafts, sets up in the All Saints Church Hall in Cook Street.

Pakuranga Plaza is a busy, cheerful mall with an easy to access mix of shops and convenience services. A library, community centre and Te Tuhi Centre for Arts is just a step or two away. Pakuranga Plaza encompasses a busy food court, gym and banks with a petrol station on the outer fringe. The Pakuranga Night Markets operate under The Warehouse on Saturday evenings. At Highland Park, courtyard style shopping with library, medical facilities, and postal services are complemented by a fire station and ambulance station almost at the door, making this centre popular with retirees and shoppers who want quick, easy access with public amenities close by. The district enjoys several smaller satellite shopping centres including Meadowlands, with its supermarket and service facilities and shops at Botany South and Bishop’s Gate where there is also a Mitre 10 Mega. With shops covering everything from clothing and footwear through to food, beauty, petcare, gifts and much more, there is no shortage of anything.

Playcentres celebrate 75 years Playcentres all around New Zealand this month celebrated 75 years since the first Playcentre opened. Connecting children, families and their communities is something Playcentres have been doing since 1941, and this month was an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen those connections. Playcentres are licensed early childhood education (ECE) centres where family involvement is a key principle. The organisation’s mission statement “Whanau tupu ngatahi – families growing together” recognises how families are at the heart of young children’s education, and how parenting is a journey for children and parents alike. Unlike most other ECE services, Playcentre parents “stay and play”, becoming actively involved as educators of their own children and other children in the community. Playcentre offers general mixed-age sessions, older children’s sessions and outdoor sessions. Children can attend Playcentre from birth through to 6. Tamaki Playcentre Association also offers the SPACE programme (Supporting Parents Alongside Children’s Education) in both South and East Auckland, for

Need Childcare? Need Work?

mainly first-time parents and their newborns. SPACE provides a great support network for new mums, and companionship and stimulation for their babies. Tamaki Playcentre Association has 16 centres under its umbrella – Pakuranga-rahihi, Bucklands Beach Ohui-a-Rangi, Howick, Cockle Bay, Whitford, Beachlands/Maraetai, St Heliers/ Glendowie, Glen Innes, Ellerslie, Mt Wellington, Clover Park, Tui Road, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Weymouth & Kohiwi Road. Each centre has a unique feel and reflects the families who attend. Playcentre Awareness Week is celebrated in March each year to promote the value of parent-led early childhood education for children. At Playcentre, children are given the opportunity to explore their environment and choose their own activities, with parents and caregivers alongside them. “The magic that happens at Playcentre is that not only are the children having a great time and learning through their play,” said NZ Playcentre Federation co-president, Viv Butcher, “but parents are also learning – about their child, about parenting, and finding a supportive community and new friendships”.

Amanda’s Homebased ECE is a long established and well regarded service operating in the Auckland area. Our Educators are carefully selected (we accept about 10% of applicants) and are in continuous training and professional development. With professional support from our Education Team Leaders, parents are confident that they know what their children are doing and how they are progressing. With our older children we offer a very successful ‘readiness for school programme’. Parents can use a WINZ childcare subsidy with our service, which is flexible and affordable. We also have the Ministry of Education 20 hours ECE programme operating.

EDUCATION

Area delivers on education Schools are generally top of the checklist when moving into a new district. Howick Ward is well endowed with many fine schools and in most cases children attend the school closest to them. However, they can attend any state school, which does not have an enrolment scheme. Where there is an enrolment scheme, home zone children are taken first. If more places are available candidates are usually chosen via a ballot system. When considering a school, check its proximity to home or perhaps to your work place. Find out if the route is safe to walk or whether children take a school bus or public transport. Ask about uniforms, the cost of fees and donations and, perhaps, whether there is an after-school care programme nearby. Ask yourself what you expect from a school such as emphasis on music and drama, a strong sports programme or extra support for special needs such as remedial reading, English as

CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Fine Arts Applied Arts Languages Lifestyle Bodyworks Kids Programmes Weekend Workshops

a second language, or a gifted children’s class. Arrange to visit the school, meet the principal and to tour facilities and classrooms. Ask if there is a buddy system in place and what happens when a child is sick at school. Read the latest Education Review Office report and visit the school website if it has one. Best of all talk to other parents who have children at the school. Ask if their queries and concerns are dealt with to their satisfaction and ask them what their children especially like about the school. If the school has an open day or information evening be sure to attend. Every school has its own philosophy, strengths and special atmosphere. Be sure you are comfortable with the way your chosen or home zone school operates. Once you have made your decision support the school and its teachers in every way you can. They have the education of your child/children in their hands so you should show your confidence.

Eating out There is no shortage of wonderful cuisine options in Howick, Pakuranga and surrounds. The beauty of our local dining scene is that there seems to be something for everyone. Eastern ethnic restaurants offer Thai, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian, Cambodian and Vietnamese cuisine. On another note there are gorgeous flavours from the Mediterranean and European countries, such as Italy, which is time-honoured for its cuisine. Naturally, some venues offer Pacific rim menus and most Eurostyle restaurants feature a good sampling of seafood, such a part of the New Zealand culture. The area boasts some great waterfront restaurants at Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach, Cockle Bay and Half Moon Bay Marina. Importantly, there are family-friendly BYO cafes, fully licensed, upmarket venues with a touch of city chic and numerous convivial pubs which also offer entertainment. Go beachfront, or trendy street café, underground, coffee shop, takeaway or rural, there’s a place for you.

Maintenance pays Maintenance around the home is essential to protect one’s property investment with refurbishments, and renovations generally an ongoing task. Because the home usually revolves around family needs that change with time, maintaining and adapting a home can alter with the passing of years. Rumpus rooms and swimming pools, which seemed a good idea when children were young, may no longer be required when a couple reaches retirement age.

titivating the interior, it pays to have a sound plan, compare quotes and ask for recommendations when new to an area.

Before undertaking any major alteration take a good, impartial look around and decide whether to do the job yourself or to employ expert help. Busy professionals may decide to employ a project manager to source products, organise consents, book trades and supervise the whole job.

The local district is blessed with tradespeople, landscapers and specialist companies, such as kitchen and bathroom experts, who can assist with every type of home maintenance. Most companies work within a range of budgets and willingly provide in-home consultations with a free measure and quote. Some will even bring sample materials to make choosing easy.

The newly retired may opt for the same track if the job seems too big for them. On the other hand, with more leisure time, they may enjoy sourcing their own materials.

Regardless of what type of home job needs to be done, new residents will find skilled and reputable tradespeople in the interiors/exteriors industry to help.

Whether recreating space for a new use, extending a home to accommodate a growing family, tackling landscaping or just

Active community Enjoy sports? So do we in the Howick Ward. There is a rich variety of affordable sporting options for residents of all ages and abilities. Whether seeking competitive or social sports and recreation opportunities, there is no shortage of diverse options for young and old. Catering for mainstream and unusual sports alike, Howick Ward offers world-class sporting venues in various codes, ranging from the international standard hockey turf in Pakuranga to the Formosa Golf Resort just a 10-minute drive towards Beachlands. A number of bowling clubs are dotted around the region, as are tennis courts for both competitive and public use. Cycling is a popular sport too. Pakuranga boasts one of the largest rugby clubs in the country, and Lloyd Elsmore Park, where the club is based, also hosts a range of other sports including hockey, touch, badminton, netball, boxing, bowls, athletics, harriers, cricket,

swimming and skateboarding. Martial arts are well catered for across the wider suburban districts, and there are also softball, baseball, croquet, squash, rugby league and football clubs in the area, not to mention ten pin bowling, an active darts club, pony clubs and fishing clubs. When it comes to water sports outside of the pool, windsurfing and sailing are both big in the region. Golfers can also count themselves spoiled for choice. There are no less than four 18-hole golf courses and a driving range in the region plus plenty more on the outer fringes.
