Welcome to the district C

ongratulations on choosing to live in this colourful, multi-cultural area of Auckland – the south is a diverse community with a wealth of amenities for every age group. From Manukau in the north, through to Papakura in the south, the region is enjoying a resurgence of growth as prospective homeowners discover new housing estates offering a range of properties close to public amenities and shops. At Manukau, new apartments and hotels are springing up in close proximity to its comprehensive and central shopping city. These are also close to the Manukau train station and Manukau Technical Institute campus situated at Hayman Park (at the corner of Manukau Station Road and Davies Avenue), directly above Manukau Station. A new state-of-the-art rail hub and station is presently being built at the Puhinui station site. Nearby is the Manukau District Court, the long-standing fun park, Rainbow’s End, the architecturally relevant, Vodafone Events Centre, the Vector Wero Whitewater Park and the Manukau SuperClinic which provides specialist outpatient appointments and day procedures. But the wonderful facilities of South Auckland go beyond central Manukau. To the east there still remains easy access to the countryside and facilities such as pony clubs and sports parks. Now, 2020 sees ongoing development of diverse housing projects with green spaces and shopping, attracting those wanting value without sacrificing lifestyle. With its proud heritage, Papakura is facing a vibrant future boosted by new neighbourhoods including those in Takanini, Karaka and Drury. At the centre of this population growth is its handy location, close to the Manukau Harbour, with easy access to the Southern Motorway, being a bonus. The area’s amenities also offer lifestyle opportunities with key facilities such as Massey Park Stadium and Pools, McLennan Park and the world-class facilities at Bruce Pulman Park, all making Papakura the sporting hub of South Auckland. New locals will find an excellent museum, library, art gallery, theatres, plenty of dining facilities and much more. Built on rich heritage H

ousing around Papakura, Takanini, Drury and surrounds continues to mushroom with thousands of new homes either underway or in the pipeline for completion in the next few years. While modern apartments, terrace houses and affordable housing together with attractive estates bring new life and wealth to the south, it is timely to remember the district has rich Maori and European settler histories. The name, Papakura is a Maori word believed to have originated from ‘papa’, meaning earth or flat and ‘kura’ meaning red, reflecting the rich, fertile soil upon which the community was founded. The tangata whenua of the area dates back many centuries, before European colonisation and hapu can trace their whakapapa back to the Tainui waka. There was a time when several pa stood across the region including at the western end of the Paerata ridge, while another stood above the plain east of Papakura at Red Hill, strategically placed to control the inner reaches of the harbour and north-south routes east to the Clevedon area. Two other pa sites were at the mouth of Slippery Creek which was associated with settlements and cultivations. The influential Maori presence, includes the Marae at Umupuia in the east (sometimes called Duder’s Beach). That particular Marae is the Mana Whenua Marae of the Ngai Tai iwi of Umpuia and Tamaki Makaurau and it has a unique place in the area’s history. In addition to the land’s cultural and economic value to tangata whenua, the area, particularly further south and 6 – Settling In 2021-2022

Also an early frontier settlement, the first Europeans made their home in these southern reaches of Auckland some 150 years ago under what was then the Waikato Immigration Scheme. Many of those original 4000 immigrants, tempted by the offer of free land, settled in the wider Papakura area and also further south in the Franklin district. They came mostly from the United

After a long sea voyage, they then faced long delays before even setting foot on ‘their’ new land with most living in disused army barracks, tents, or shacks. In particular, Drury’s development as a colonial settlement focused on the Great South Road, accommodation and rural services while the Papakura area once featured coal, clay and kauri gum industries. Adjacent sources of employment, apart from Auckland city, included the former Kingseat and Ravensthorpe Hospitals, Middlemore Hospital, the freezing works at Otahuhu-Westfield and, later, the Glenbrook Steel Mill. The New Zealand War, principally in Waikato, impacted on the whole area and all peoples, but colonial and imperial camps and specific events were more localised. Military camps were also established in the district during the Second World War: these included the New Zealand military camp on the northeast side of Papakura and United States Army camps near Pukekohe. However, all this is but a snapshot of the district’s background, yet, hopefully, it forms a springboard for exploring further because, there is some fascinating reading for those who wish to delve into the past.

AREA’S FIRST SHOP

ccording to the recollection published in 1969, of long-time local identity and butcher, Charles Crawford Munro, the above photo shows Manurewa’s first purpose-built shop: “When I joined the late Mr Charles Hawthorn and founded the butchery business of Hawthorn and Munro, Ltd, in 1906, I drove a hawking cart to Alfriston and Brookby, and later through Papakura, Manurewa, Alfriston and back to Clevedon through Armdore. “An Englishman, Mr Fred White, kept the Alfriston store on the corner opposite the school ... Mr White, an ambitious and persistent man, with plenty of energy but no money, persuaded the Martin [brothers] to build him a store on the corner of the Great South Rd and Hill Rd, but this was no more than the boxed-in end of the verandah of a five-roomed house. White, who had bigger ideas, eventually got them to build a proper store on the site where Bryant’s store now stands ...” ‘ The building in the photograph is the latter [purposebuilt] store, situated on the eastern side of the Great South Road, opposite the future site of the Manurewa Post Office. Hawthorn & Munro later bought a section alongside White’s original house, where they built the township’s second shop and first butchery. SETTLING IN 2021-2022 – 7

Changing face of Manukau

or many years the wider Manukau district was mostly rural with settlement escalating after the Second World War. The 50’s, 60’s and 70’s saw development of suburbs such as Manurewa, Hillpark, Totara Heights and later The Gardens plus other new subdivisions now escalating throughout Takanini and Papakura. With the amalgamation of Manukau County and Manurewa Borough in 1965, Manukau City was formed but it wasn’t until New Zealand-wide reorganisation of local government in 1989 that Manukau City absorbed Papatoetoe City and Howick Borough but lost some land to the newly formed Papakura District. Then, on November 1, 2010 Manukau City Council was abolished and the governed area was amalgamated into the Manukau, Howick, Manurewa-Papakura, and Franklin wards of the new Auckland ‘SuperCity’. New infrastructure saw the completion of the southwestern motorway from Manukau to connect with the north-western motorway via the new Waterview tunnel. Continuing works on the Southern Motorway has seen changes at the Takanini junction with road widening between Takanini and Papakura. A 4.5km cycle and pedestrian walkway has been built between Papakura and Takanini and, now, the motorway from Papakura to Drury is being widened to three lanes each way. There have been added improvements to State Highway 20B making access to the airport easier than ever. 8 – Settling In 2021-2022

chools may be places of formal learning but when the Reverend W.C. Wood planted an acorn in the Papakura School grounds on July 19, 1919, as a contribution to the local peace celebrations after the First World War, the school yard took on new meaning. This ‘peace oak’ was intended not so much as a war memorial but as a symbolic commemoration of peace and victory. The tree and accompanying plaque can still be seen near the north-western boundary of what is now Central Park, within view of the Papakura-Karaka First World War memorial.

A GROWING COMMUNITY Auckland’s southernmost metropolitan city centre, Papakura is expanding rapidly. A new wave of housing, including many apartments, which are attracting young professionals, has seen rail and bus services extended and new community facilities come into play. The shopping centre encompasses a wide range of retail shops focused on fashion, food and fitness, health and beauty plus professional and trade services all easily accessed. For families keen to live, work and, plays within an active community, Papakura is attracting new residents and businesses – come and join them!

Never a dull moment

ettling into southern parts of Auckland has many advantages when it comes to recreation. Eastern and western beaches are but a short drive, and the Waikato River is in close proximity; all are sure to keep swimmers, fishers, boaties, plus jet and water skiers very happy. But beyond these largely summertime water activities there is much more to interest locals. For example, the New Zealand Warbirds Visitors Centre with its fine display of aircraft is a must see attraction at Ardmore. You can see more military history at the central Papakura Museum (Auckland’s best kept secret) and also discover the Story of Papakura, a wonderful account of the district’s past. For theatre buffs, both the Hawkins Theatre and the Off Boadway Theatre, home to the Papakura Theatre Company, feature regular productions. The Hawkins Theatre is hosts a youth theatre group and encompasses a cinema. When it comes to libraries, golf courses, and fun family attractions there are more than enough to keep families busy at weekends and during holiday time. To name a few: rockets ropes and Treasure Island mini golf near Auckland Airport and also Butterfly Creek, with its tropical butterfly house, farm animals, monkeys, a kiwi and New Zealand’s only saltwater crocodile. Then there’s Rainbow’s End amusement park, a 10 – Settling In 2021-2022

whitewater park and a jet sprint experience to provide thrills and spills all in central Manukau. When it comes to markets, check out the iconic Otara flea market, various night markets at shopping centres and both the Clevedon Farmers Market and craft market among others. For those who love to walk – or wander – the Auckland Botanic Gardens at Manurewa are outstanding but equally intriguing is the The Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve which lies about 7km southwest of Mangere, on the shore of the Manukau Harbour. It is an internationally significant heritage landscape and an important archaeological site with spectacular views over the harbour and surrounding countryside. A little further afield, but providing a pleasant country drive, are the Hunua Falls just outside of Clevedon – a beautiful picnic spot with walks too. And, if in that area, the McNicoll Homestead Park and Museum, open during the weekend near Clevedon township, has farm equipment and outdoor displays. Visitors are also invited to picnic there. Naturally, there are many other attractions some free, some requiring payment, to ensure there’s little need to be bored when living south of central Auckland. Take time to explore, and make use of the many amenities all designed to encourage an active and interesting lifestyle.

f there is one thing – or rather a few things – that south Auckland is not short of, that’s leisure facilities. Great swimming pool complexes are a feature in several areas and to name just two – the Manurewa Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre and the Massey Park Pool at Papakura are in neighbouring suburbs. The Manurewa complex comes with a fully equipped gym filled with natural light and there are pools for working on your stroke, an award-winning swim school, group fitness classes, friendly staff and, of course, a great community vibe. Furthermore the complementary Manurewa Sports Centre, sent in the grounds of beautiful Mountford Park, is surrounded by a range of sports facilities and training grounds while the centre itself caters for community and corporate events as well as weddings and other major celebrations. At Papakura, the Massey Park pool complex offers a lane pool, spa pool, wave pool, sauna, outdoor lane pool and steam room. Not much more to ask for there! Adjacent to the Massey Park pool, is the park’s stadium, home to the Papakura Athletic & Harrier Club and which hosts athletic meets for a great part of the year. It is a key sports facility offering an excellent covered grandstand, toilet block and facilities to offer snack food. Nearby, the Papakura Leisure Centre, has a gym, and caters for sports leagues, after school care, school

holiday programmes and more. The beauty of these central facilities is that they are within walking distance of the Papakura township and shops. What’s more, there are plans to create more sports fields and leisure opportunities with approval being given for two future parks – the Prince Edward Sports Park and Drury Sports Complex just a few kilometres away. These are seen as critical elements in the Papakura Local Board’s strategy for dealing with the district’s escalating population. In addition to the centralised Papakura sports facilities, Takanini is home to the expansive Bruce Pulman Park catering to sports such as basketball, gymnastics, cricket, rugby, touch, netball and more. There are physio programmes, training initiatives and conference facilities also within the park which hosts a wide range of events. Of course, these are just a few of the parks and sports facilities in the wider area which ensure local communities are well served and that families moving into new subdivisions have access to a huge selection of recreational opportunities. Also check out Totara Pools in Totara Park, Manurewa, Papatoetoe Centennial Pool and Leisure Centre, the Otara Pool and Leisure Centre and MoanaNui-a-Kiwa Pool and Leisure Centre in Mangere.

ducation is one thing new South Auckland families don’t have to worry about. From childcare and pre-school facilities through to secondary college, as well as extra-curricular activities and tuition, the district is well catered for with new schools planned in some areas. When it comes to pre-school care, parents can be confident they will find something to suit their personal needs. In addition to playcentres and kindergartens, there are numerous childcare centres which offer all day care for children from working families. Some of these cater for very young babies and some may take primary aged children after school has finished. Centres adhere to strict regulations and offer proper sleeping arrangements for young infants. Some provide hot meals during the day and most have excellent indoor/outdoor facilities. All employ trained staff and work to government guidelines when it comes to teacher/ child ratios, social programmes and developmental skills. Newcomers to South Auckland can be confident about local

schools too. The wider area is well endowed with quality primary and secondary schools, some in rural districts which offer a touch of country to their focus. While most secondary schools and many primary schools are subject to zoning, it is possible, in some cases, for out of zone pupils to be placed in a school of choice if there are unfilled places. Some have no zoning restrictions. Most local schools have an open door policy when it comes to community interest and parental enquiries are welcomed. When seeking an appropriate school enquire about special programmes such as music, drama, catering, science, environmental sustainability and sports programmes. As well as formal state and private education facilities, there are also opportunities to attend hobby classes and special interest groups with tuition on a variety of subjects. e all know the importance of regular eye testing, especially if there is a family history of poor eyesight or eye disease. In the industrial workplace, eyes at risk can be protected by wearing safety glasses and, remember, driving is impossible if eyesight fails. Holding a driver’s licence is dependent on good vision and motorists are advised to have an eyesight test every two years. Failing eyesight or other severe eyesight problems may be prevented or rectified by consulting an optometrist regularly. While biennial eye testing is recommended, there are times when more frequent testing may be required. These include during a child’s growing years when the eye is also growing; in middle life when the focusing system begins to weaken; and in later years when eye health problems begin to occur such as cataracts and glaucoma. Regular eye checks can help preserve eyesight but

However, tooth loss by accident or otherwise, can mean the loss of a confident smile and result in various problems. The teeth next to the space left by an extracted or missing tooth can move toward each other and try to fill the space; this may result in a partial gap and crooked teeth, which are difficult to clean and maintain. This shift in the alignment of teeth may also impact on bite and the way food is chewed. Besides the possibility of having overgrown or crooked teeth, one is at risk of bone resorption or bone loss. Without teeth to support that area of the mouth, gums and jawbone begin to deteriorate and the bone loss will cause cheeks and lips to look sunken, instantly ageing you. But, the good news is, there are options for tooth replacements and the type of replacement will depend on the severity of your case, how many teeth need to be replaced and the cost. Tooth replacement options include dental implants, dental bridges and partial or full dentures. What’s more, there are many different types of partial dentures. There are acrylic dentures, flexible dentures and also vitallium (chrome cobalt) dentures. So, if you lose a tooth (or several teeth), it really is advisable to invest in your dental health by opting for replacements – consult your dentist and he/she will advise the best option for you.
