wondered if Winston would make it back to Parliament, whether the Greens would see a resurgence of support and if Act would make the 5% threshold plus one elected member (David Seymour, of course).

I gave a fleeting thought to local man, Mark Ball’s bid to represent his Heartland party in government and weighed up the Maori Party’s chances of holding the balance of power but, mostly, my thoughts turned to National and where it would be standing come October 18.

Whatever the outcome, I’m sure we are all in for the political ride of our lives these next three years and……

So, with that in mind, I have tried to use other means to suggest the hairbrush has another home rather than basin-side.

I’ve popped it into the vanity drawer, I’ve tucked it behind the scented diffuser, I’ve left it on the windowsill firmly wedged under my hairbrush and even put it on his bedside table, all to no avail. I’ve run out of ideas to graciously suggest the vanity is no place for the hairbrush. Now, I rather think there’s a serious conversation coming.

But, really, can you have a serious conversation about a hairbrush, a man who at least brushes his hair and keeps it tidy and a vanity on which I see hair, after hair, after hair and which are just not there in my man’s eyes? No! So, I’ll forget the vagaries of domestic life and go back to politics. Prior to Kiwis casting their votes I couldn’t see Labour losing – I wonder if that is, indeed, the case now?

ell, the country has now come through another election but, unfortunately, Rural Living went to print shortly before October 17 so, although the outcome is now known, I won’t be commenting until next month on what I believe could be in store for the nation.

Instead, I’ll express my exasperation with lovely man about the house who just will not refrain from leaving his hairbrush on the vanity. Seemingly a small thing but, with every tiny hair that escapes, the bristles’ grasp, and lies on my pristine white basin, I become increasingly frustrated.

Now my ‘best’ man has a wonderful head of hair, always has, but finally, as age catches up, a few strands insist on leaving their foundation and because there are bigger things in life for us to dispute, I dare not express my irritation – it wouldn’t take long to for him to identify my many foibles which he tactfully ignores.

It’s all about the birds and the bees and the flowers but mainly the trees in Jack Hobb’s garden in rural Franklin. You can see for yourself when this genial manager of Auckland Botanic Gardens opens his own special oasis to the public as part of the Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble. He spoke to ANGELA KEMP.

T

he non-gardeners amongst readers might consider Jack Hobbs’ eagerness to tend his own garden after a day spent managing the 64hectare Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa rather bizarre. But when you are as passionate about plants as Jack, it’s a no brainer.

Jack has been manager of the Botanic Gardens since 1997 and is a past president of the Royal NZ Institute of Horticulture.

He’s also proud to admit he planted every single plant on his property himself.

Despite his near celebrity status, thanks to appearances on TV’s Maggie’s Garden Show and as a prolific writer, author and authority on numerous aspects of plants and gardening, Jack remains refreshingly down to earth. He cares for his one-acre garden in Mauku himself with help from wife, Sandra.

“In my job I don’t do any hands-on gardening so when I arrive home, I change out of my working clothes and I’m in the 6 — Rural Living — October/November 2020

garden every night and at weekends,” says Jack. “It keeps me fit and I find being around plants is therapeutic. I do think gardening is a really important contributor to good health and wellbeing.”

Jack and Sandra bought the property 40 years ago when it was “basically a house in a junkyard” with old cars and lots of other rubbish littering the section. Fences had fallen down, it was a terrible mess but it had three things going for it – there was room for Sandra’s horses, it was big enough for Jack to create a garden and the price was right.

Over the years the original cottage has been extended to make a substantial home where the couple have raised three children and the ‘junkyard’ has been transformed into Jack’s own botanic garden.

Set on five acres in total, the property not only provides grazing for Sandra’s horse, but for a small flock of self-shedding Wiltshire sheep (“delicious” says Jack).

The starting point for the garden’s development was a hard tennis court, a must-have for the tennis-mad couple.

“I always wanted a garden surrounding a tennis court because I figured what could be nicer,” says Jack, who has since added a replica of the Mauku Tennis Club pavilion overlooking the court.

He’s president of Patamahoe Tennis Club and says he is looking forward to playing again after Christmas when the two knee replacements he had over winter have healed.

“When we first moved here I’d just started at the Botanic Gardens so I had good advice and access to lots of plants.

Firstly, I planted shelter belts and then trees, too many but I’ve since taken some out.”

around are Jack’s homegrown gems, hybrids he’s cultivated including his famous Wiri hebes, clivias (sadly now flowered), day lilies and a unique tamarillo tree which holds its fruit through till spring.

“I think they’ll see quite a few things that will be a little bit different,” he says. “The garden has a whole diversity of different things and there are plants ranging from bromeliads to perennials through to unusual native plants. A real mix but all things I have selected over the years because they do well in this environment.”

Jack loves trees and they are abundant throughout the garden despite the recent cull. Exotics such as tree ferns from South Africa, New Caledonia and Australia tower majestically above more easily recognisable species such as palms and oaks.

Jack’s personal favourite flowers are clivias and the newer breed of dahlias bred

The planting attracts a plethora of birdlife with tui, kereru and wax eyes almost permanent residents – “there’s something for them all year round,” he says.

Some readers will have enjoyed going on one of Jack’s overseas gardening tours organised by Pukekohe Travel. In the past, he has led tours to China, Canada, Vietnam, Borneo, Britain, Europe and South Africa.

Now on hold due to Covid-19, he is happy to share his garden and expertise to help the Franklin Hospice Ramble. And, because he hates plant labels, Jack will be on hand throughout the day to talk about how his garden grows and to share his passion with lucky visitors.

FRANKLIN HOSPICE GARDEN RAMBLE Jack Hobbs’ Mauku garden is one of 15 charming private town and country gardens throwing open their gates for a good cause.

Since the rambles began in 2012 more than $200,000 has been raised for the Pukekohe-based Franklin Hospice. The biennial fundraiser takes place over the weekend of November 14-15 and offers a unique opportunity to see some of the district’s loveliest gardens at their best.

From woodlands to formal, sub-tropical and native creations, one even has its own putting green.

There will be a Christmas market at one of the gardens along with refreshments including Devonshire teas.

Tickets cost $65 and are available from the Hospice Shop in King Street, Pukekohe and at other retail outlets or online at Eventbrite.

Adapting TO HARD TIMES Brian Neben publishes Rural Living and was a lifestyle farmer for many years

ere we are heading to the end of the year and, thankfully, we are not in the lockdown situation of a month ago.

However, it will take some time to get back to normal if there is ever going to be a normal as we knew it.

I was born in 1938 just before the start of the Second World War. During those years, 1939 to 1945, I’m sure the entire population wanted things to return to normal.

Nowadays, most people would have no idea what it is to live with rationing of food and petrol to name just two things which were in short supply with many products unavailable during the war.

At the end of those years, I guess things did get back to normal but, on looking back, that normal was not as the nation had known prior to 1939.

Anyway, by the time you read this, the election will be over and a sense of direction will prepare our paths for what

could be a difficult three years.

I think we are extremely lucky to have such a strong farming community which will provide food for many countries.

Our dairy farmers, who I believe to be the best in the world, are setting new records for production and our growers are also showing the world just how good we are at producing fruit and vegetables. Our wines are hitting new highs overseas, too.

I hope we can now show the world how good New Zealand rugby teams still are.

The first Bledisloe Cup test against the Australians was disappointing. As you will gather, I don’t yet know the result of the Eden Park game but when you read this, I’m confident we will all have seen how good our team really is…here’s hoping!

I must say, it’s been great having rugby back and I am so pleased to see such a lot of young players making their mark on the game.

Last month, I featured my horses, which have given great enjoyment to us for the past 20 or so years. Unfortunately, the photograph accompanying my column was incorrectly captioned; it should have read: Adrienne Matthews with Wilsherocknroll.

As a matter of interest, Willsherocknroll went to the trials some two weeks ago where she qualified. We were delighted.

Trainer, Adrienne is now resting her for about four weeks and then she will commence racing – we have high hopes.

As this issue of Rural Living went to print, the question on everyone’s lips was ‘will Labour’s labours warrant the party a second term?’.

However, in the lead-up to the election, Damien O’Connor (Minister of Agriculture, Rural Communities and more) was still ‘doing this’, as these summaries of reports from his office reveal.

UP WITH PASTURE – D.O’C’S THREE AMIGOS Good friends are hard to find, particularly in these turbulent times, but Damien O’Connor has made New Zealand some mates by securing an agreement with Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica.

“New Zealand is one of Uruguay’s closest friends in the world and a model of sustainable agriculture production.

New Zealand invests jointly with other member countries to develop technologies and practices to reduce emissions from farming,” Mr O’Connor said regarding a new project, Innovation for Pasture Management.

Using drones and simulation models to measure and monitor pasture growth, the initiative will provide information to more than 4,000 producers to help them optimise pasture management and encourage sustainable livestock production.

“New Zealand and Uruguay both have a proud tradition of producing livestock, meat, milk and wool for export,” Mr O’Connor said. “We have similar land areas dedicated to pasturebased livestock production... Improving management practices through this new project will help us to keep reducing emissions.”

WILL CASH KILL DIEBACK? If a kauri falls in the bush, Damien O’Connor will hear the sound! Armed with an additional $32 million over five years, should the Government remain in government, the fight against kauri dieback will continue.

“Over the past three years, the Government has invested more than $60 www.ruralliving.co.nz

million for science and research efforts to combat kauri dieback and, in the current financial year, Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation have allocated more than $14 million to protect kauri,” our Biosecurity Minister said earlier this month.

“Kauri are a cornerstone of the indigenous forests of the upper North Island, and play a vital role in supporting other native trees and shrubs... the decisions we make today will be critical for the future of these mighty trees and the ecosystems they support.”

GREEN GROWING, LESS RED TAPE? The cost to farm for the future will not be borne by farmers and growers alone, the Minister of Agriculture asserted recently.

“It can cost farmers and growers between $5000 and $10,000 for each property to develop an integrated farm plan and we will create a cost-sharing agreement with industry which will ensure every farmer and grower pays less for their compliance,” Mr O’Connor said in late September of a new government plan.

“We will build on the work we have already undertaken with industry by providing initial funding to kick-start a closer collaboration with the sector to develop integrated farm planning that works.”

Beginning with a $50 million taxpayer contribution, the Government intends to usher in ‘clean, green carbon neutral New Zealand’, while also reducing compliance costs and generating greater returns for farmers through diversification. Various plan templates will be offered regarding various aspects of farming and growing, he confirmed.

“Cohesive national farm plans that adopt a whole of farm approach will ensure that we stay ahead of the curve internationally when it comes to good farming practice... Our primary sector is a huge part of our economy and our brand, and will be vital in our economic recovery from Covid-19, which is why we need to work with them and support the industry.”

O’CONNOR ON THE JOBS...

Efforts to contain the pandemic may have seen many Kiwis out of work but, according to Damien O’Connor, those in the primary industries can use every helping hand they can get.

“The Government will continue to actively manage policy settings to make sure industries get the workers they need, while also ensuring New Zealanders who have lost jobs due to Covid-19 have the chance to find new employment,” he said following the release of a report (in late September) by Stats NZ. The report reveals, during year to August 2020, exports across the board grew by 2.8%, with milk power, butter and cheese exports up 11.1%, meat exports up 9.9%, wine exports up 8.5%, fruit exports, 8.4% and vegetables exports increasing by 6.3%.

Although some job vacancies are being filled by Kiwi workers, overseas labour will still help make up the numbers, Mr O’Connor added.

“We made a range of immigration policy changes to ensure the sector has the workforce it needs as summer approaches and extra jobs come up on farms and in orchards... [and] people in New Zealand with expiring working holiday visas can now stay to fill short-term horticulture and viticulture roles.”

The Rodger Fox Big Band is, arguably New Zealand’s best known big band but here in Franklin district the Sunset Coast Big band is still hitting the high notes despite Covid-19 doing its best to stop the music. Rural Living asked Ed Geddes saxophonist whether music was still making the world go round or had the corona virus succeeded in halting regular gigs attended by live audiences.

When was the Sunset Coast Big Band formed and how many members does it have?

The band is the third reincarnation of the original Waiuku Silver Band which became the Waiuku Stage Band and then the Sunset Coast Big Band. We are an incorporated society which traces itself back to 1956 –almost ready to claim the pension! Big bands usually have about 16-18 members; we currently have 12 so, as you can see, we are a bit light. We’re always on the lookout for musicians to swell out ranks – anyone interested, or who wants more information, can call me on 0272 606 568.

How long have you been a member and how did you come to join?

I joined the band 12 years ago, being recruited by former trombone player, Pete Schuver.

What type of musicians makes up the Sunset Coast Big Band and do you have as many members as you would like?

The band is made up of all sorts – farmers, teachers, retirees and other workers, all united by the benefits of playing music.

It is said that the heyday of big bands and swing was in the 1930’s but is that really true?

Indeed, the 1930s was the heyday of big bands which were formed to make enough volume to fill large venues but today they keep on going on because of the special sound they produce. Artists such as Phil Collins, Michael Bublé and many others have used these sounds in some of their projects.

Because big bands are, well, big, how easy is it to secure bookings and for members to be fairly rewarded for their work?

We play in the band for our own pleasure 10 — Rural Living — October/November 2020

and improvement. Before Covid-19 we received enough bookings to cover our costs with a little bit of petrol money. We have a scale of fees for different gigs – the rate differs depending on whether we are performing for our local business association, a show or private functions.

We do see ourselves as an asset.

Thanks to Pukekohe High School, this area is well represented by young musicians.

However, due to interest in the likes of computer games, I believe many younger people aren’t learning music/instruments to the same degree as previously…and I must point out that saxophones are woodwind!

Who books big bands today; what kind of gigs would the Sunset Coast Big Band normally expect to fill?

We do all sorts of gigs. We have held regular concerts in the Waiuku Town Hall, played at Steel & Wheels, in Christmas parades, at the Karaka Machinery Show, cosmopolitan clubs, weddings, birthday parties and retirements villages.

Do more youngsters today tend to opt for the likes of the guitar or drums and classical instruments such as violin and piano?

Obviously the popular instruments such as guitar and drums have a large following but it has left a bit of [career] security for those who do learn more traditional instruments as it is quite hard to find a good clarinettist for instance or, for that matter, many other brass players.

How badly hit has the band been by Covid-19?

Thanks to Covid-19, we have lost all our bookings for this year – it’s hit us hard.

Do you expect to see an upswing in bookings now that Auckland has gone to Alert Level 1?

Unfortunately, the pandemic has hit the band’s biggest supporters with funding being withdrawn from many organisations and public events. The recent cost cutting at the Glenbrook Steel Mill has also had an effect. The band will have to explore other possibilities in the future.

Who is your favourite musician and why?

My favourite is Illinois Jacquet, [an American jazz tenor saxophonist], the first player to become known for the ‘Texas Sound’, a close second is Chris Carter an absolute monster!

How many young people are learning brass instruments these days and how important is it to encourage them take up the likes of the trombone, trumpet, saxophone, tuba etc?

If you could grow any flower, vegetable or tree what would it be and why?

I’m fortunate to live rurally so I grow a lot of different things. This year I’ve planted a magnolia called Ruby, the name of our youngest grandchild vas well as a Malus floribunda (flowering crab apple) and I’m trying out a feature of sunflowers and miniature zinnias. I also enjoy growing kumara; my one regret has been not growing a pecan nut tree.

If you could ask any three people (living or dead) to dinner who would they be and why?

I would invite Illinois Jacquet because as an Indian black man in the USA he would have some great stories to tell; Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band because of his playing and instrumental influence on my early years and Nelson Mandela for reasons which are pretty much obvious. I’d like to be greedy and invite a fourth, too, Queen Elizabeth the First, one of the best ‘kings’ England ever had! www.ruralliving.co.nz

TRIPOD TANKS

fuel accidents Following a serious farm injury, farmers are being warned that poorly maintained tripod tanks are a serious health and safety risk to fuel users.

A

safety alert from the Fuel Distributors Industry Safety Committee and WorkSafe New Zealand follows a recent incident in which a fuel tanker driver was seriously injured on a farm where a tripod overhead tank collapsed while he was filling it.

The root cause of the collapse was significant rust corrosion on a tank leg.

Farm implements close to the tank also contributed to the driver’s injuries.

WorkSafe Agriculture Lead, Al McCone, says on the farm, farmers are responsible for keeping themselves, their workers and other people safe and healthy.

“This includes making sure tanks are safe. Our advice is to check all fuel tanks and support structures for signs of corrosion and metal fatigue, and where these are identified, consider replacement options.”

He adds that while farmers should ensure tanks are properly secured to a flat foundation and that the work area around each tank is safe with a clear path free of obstacles, they should not repair fuel tanks in poor condition.

“Maintenance on existing tripod tanks is limited to painting, replacement of hoses, valves and lost fixings (e.g. bolts, pins), work to ensure that the tripod stand is

The Fuel Distributors Industry Safety Committee has issued a notice that they will not be filling tripod fuel tanks due to the number of incidents involving ageing fuel tanks and the hazards associated with them.

The committee believes it is up to the discretion of fuel providers as to whether they fill tanks or not.

Approval for manufacturing tripod fuel tanks was cancelled in 1996. At the time, it was agreed that farmers could use existing tripod stand tanks until the tanks reached the end of their working life.

“Farmers should be considering upgrading to modern tanks in order to meet modern design standards and prevent further incidents causing harm,” says Mr McCone. “If farmers have any questions or need assistance, they should contact their local fuel supplier who can help them ensure their operational environment is safe.”

pring brings milder temperatures, particularly so this season which, unfortunately, is also perfect for the growth and reproduction of worms in our lambs, kids, calves, alpaca, and pigs.

The worm lifecycle starts by larvae being ingested on the pasture. These then develop into adults within the gastrointestinal tract. The adult worms produce eggs which are passed out in the faeces back onto the pasture. With warm temperatures the eggs hatch into larvae and the lifecycle continues.

TAKE ACTION NOW TO PREVENT HIGH WORM BURDENS: 1. Lambs, goat kids and calves should be receiving their first drench (de-wormer) at about 6-10 weeks old, after they have been ingesting grass for a few weeks. It is important to use “First Drench” in lambs and kids to protect against tapeworm, “Matrix” in alpacas and “Arrest C” in calves. Piglets can receive “Dectomax” on their favourite treat such as a jam sandwich.

2. Take care not to overdose. Check the weight of your animals before dosing. If the animal is small enough to hold, the bathroom scales can be used to obtain the correct weight for dosage required, or you can ask for an estimate from one of our vets if animals are too big for the

With plenty of grass growth it is time to restrict grazing in those prone to laminitis or grass colic. 3. Under-dosing is also problematic as the strongest worms will survive and breed, creating eggs and larvae resistant to our drenches. This can be recognised by animals failing to thrive and having continued diarrhoea even after drenching (but, note, there are also other causes for this).

4. Due to increasing drench resistance, it is recommended re-examining management of lifestyle block animals. Consider lowering your number of animals to decrease the larval challenge and cross graze with species which don’t share the same worms such as having cattle with sheep or goats; cattle will “clean-up” the sheep and goat larvae on the pasture.

Also, the use of supplementary feed can decrease larval intakes.

5. Adult sheep, goats and alpaca also require regular drenching particularly during the summer to protect them against barber’s pole worm which can cause anaemia by sucking blood (see photo) and even death when severe.

The interval between drenches will depend on the drench used (its persistent activity). Our clinic can advise if you have doubts.

6. If unsure when to drench, the “gold standard” is to take a faecal sample and do a faecal egg count. Your vet can interpret the results for you and give recommendations. This can also be done prior to a drench and then at 10 days post drench if you are concerned about resistance on your property.

“Farmers are operating in a challenging environment with a lot of variables – financial pressures, weather impacts and new regulations. These things have a huge impact on farmer wellbeing and

Bird of the Year READY FOR TAKE OFF!

Ready, set, go – it’s lift off time for ‘Kiwis’ as they start to campaign and vote for their favourite native birds.

F

orest & Bird’s popular annual contest, Bird of the Year (2020) will spread its wings on November 2 as bird lovers across the nation consider this year’s nomination.

Voting will close two weeks later on November 15 and the winner will be announced on November 16. “[Although] originally planned to end on the weekend of October 17, we didn’t want to overshadow the quite important human election,” says Bird of the Year spokesperson, Laura Keown.

“Our incredible native birds deserve to have all the attention, so Forest & Bird decided to move [the date] a couple of weeks after the squawking and flapping of human elections ends.”

Once again, New Zealanders will have a chance to vote for up to five of the native birds they love in order of preference. An instant run-off voting system is applied (similar to local election voting) to determine the Bird of the Year winner.

This 15th annual Bird of the Year event is expected to soar to new heights, with a number of godwit enthusiasts already causing a flap all the way from Russia.

“Once again, people can vote for a whole flock of their favourite birds. But, we’re warning that even with five votes to cast, it will still be a tough decision,” Laura says.

“Last year’s voting led to some fun collaboration between birds, with the strategic Penguin Party ultimately taking out the title for New Zealand’s special noisy flapper, the hoiho yellow-eyed penguin.

“This year we’re already seeing alliances forming, with a few wetland waders such as the bittern and fern bird getting an early start on political manoeuvring,” Laura says.

But, of course, although Bird of the Year is a light-hearted competition, it has a serious purpose of spreading awareness about the threats to New Zealand’s native birds, so many of which are threatened or at risk of extinction.

“Our birds face enormous threats from climate change, introduced predators, and continued habitat loss,” Laura says “We’re asking everyone to get to know our incredible native birds by visiting www.birdoftheyear.org.nz [If you do] I reckon you’ll want to take action to protect them and the places they live.”

And, even though it carries a $1.4 million price tag, a fresh formula by the University of Canterbury (UC) could well deliver the sweet smell of success.

“Our current rat lures emit a consistent smell for a sustained period of time, which means they’re always attractive,” Dr Michael Jackson from UC says of a scented long-life lure used for pest control.

“That means if a rat doesn’t visit a trap box for five months it wouldn’t matter because the lure inside the box remains as attractive as it was on day one.”

The smell of peanut butter

(the most commonly used lure) attracts rats but the scent perishes quickly; Dr Jackson’s ‘off the wall’ idea has been to focus on the ‘attractants’ or key chemical compounds in foods for use in lures. Thanks to the new funding (of $1.4 million) from the Department of Conservation, he expects to develop lures with a broader appeal to attract other pest species as well.

“We developed our first lure only for rats, and that project gave us the skills and knowledge to know we can make a multispecies lure which will have the ability to catch other small mammals, such as stoats, that New Zealanders want to keep well away from native wildlife.”

Grand Final cut K eeping his wits sharp and his knives sharper, James Smith from PAK’nSAVE Pukekohe claimed top honours at the recent Upper North Island leg of the Alto Young Butcher of the Year competition.

“Practice makes perfect in my mind and I think that’s what made the difference,” says James. “I focused on my butchery skills this time and with the feedback from the judges I now know what to work on to stand out from everyone else at the Grand Final.”

Since Rural Living featured James in our June-July 2018 issue, it appears he has been set on cutting the competition down to size at every chance he gets!

During the competition, held at Skills4Work in Manukau, contestants put their boning, trimming, slicing and dicing skills to the test as they broke down a size 20 chicken, a whole pork leg, and a beef

ctober is the official start of the predator control season, so if you haven’t already dusted off your traps, now is a great time to do so, collect some bait, and start planning how you want to run them for the summer.

The standard predator control season (October-March) runs for six months and is designed to target ferrets, stoats, weasels, rats and hedgehogs during the all-important bush-bird breeding season.

In particular, stoats, are more trappable during spring as females are doing bigger distances in search of breeding den sites and males, of course, are also doing big miles in search of females.

The next big peak in stoat captures will come in February/March when all the new juveniles start heading out on their own for the first time.

Mammalian predators have a significant impact on all our wildlife and, when successful predator control is undertaken, the increase in birdlife can be quite amazing.

If you are among those who have studiously followed all my advice over winter, and now have your possums,

rabbits and rats well under control, adding predator control to your property protection list really will be the icing on the cake and you can look forward to a relatively pest-free summer.

Effectively catching predators is fairly straight forward once you have traps in place. Because they only require checking and re-baiting once every week or so, the labour requirements are minimal considering the huge benefits.

The traps to use are the DOC series Kill traps (see www.predatortraps.com). While these come in three sizes, the middle size (DOC200) is by far the most commonly used; the big 250 is specifically designed for situations where large numbers of ferrets are present.

All DOC series traps come housed in robust timber tunnels and are baffled with mesh to keep out non-target species and pets. ◆ Trap spacing: All predators tend to have incredibly large home ranges (40256ha). As a good starting point, place traps 100-200m apart. On properties up to 10 acres 1-4 traps are often all that is required to catch all predators passing through. ◆ Trap placement: Set traps on welldefined linear edges - fencelines, track edges pasture/forest margins, natural

intersection features, stream edges and near the chook house are all great starting points. Trapping these features tends to catch more predators and makes traps nice and easy to service. ◆ Baits: Rabbits are often the most prolific food item for our predators so it stands to reason that they are a great bait to use. We also see a lot of predation on both wild bird and chook eggs so the latter are also a good choice. The DOC standard is a piece of rabbit and a hen’s egg which are replaced weekly. It’s always a good idea to rub the piece of rabbit on natural features leading to the trap and on the trap itself as this will help attract animals passing through.

SECRET WEDDING A busy lives,” Kristina says. “It was then we decided to open the café just five days a week and catch our breath a bit.”

Then, spontaneously, just a few weeks ago, Paul and Kristina decided to tie the knot on October 9 at their Ararimu home with just their mums in attendance along with Kristina’s daughter, son, daughter-inlaw and grand-daughter plus one or two close friends.

They exchanged vows in a short, very happy but somewhat emotional garden ceremony then escaped to Sky City for a night with a celebration dinner at Masu

Restaurant before returning to work on the Sunday.

“In the past we never seemed to have time to contemplate, let alone plan a wedding,” says Kristina. “Now that we have taken the plunge, we are both extremely happy.

“The wedding has, in fact, been a wonderful celebration after plans to mark Paul’s 60th birthday went awry during the last Covid lockdown. And, now, with my 60th coming up, we hope a getaway at the end of the month will be a joint birthday/ wedding treat.”

nyone who says George Washington chopped down a certain cherry tree may not be lying but they aren’t telling the truth either.

“The ‘fact’ that Washington had wooden dentures is a myth too,” Roger Oliver (The Denture Man) explains. “Just as many people think eating foods such as apples and corn is impossible with dentures, there are many myths that people like to... sink their teeth into!”

From his consulting rooms in Papakura, Roger (a clinical denture technician who has trained dental students) has dished out expert advice regarding creating and fitting dentures for 32 years. Some of the questions he’s fielded have been downright ‘jaw dropping’!

“I was once asked if women lose a tooth for each child they bear – definitely an old wives’ tale – and if barbers used to extract teeth, which actually is true,” he says. “Another common misconception is that people need to wait a while for gums to harden following extraction but, thanks to modern technology, that’s no longer the case. By carefully moulding dentures, we can ensure they will be comfortable and ready to be fitted as soon as possible.”

Roger provides a range of services, assisting with everything from full sets of dentures – finely honed to suit each individual’s mouth – and even partial plates.

“As people age, they may require a full set of dentures,” Roger confirms. “However, whether as a result of accidents or sporting injuries, younger people also require our services, so we provide various options when it comes to artificial replacements and plates.”

Another question routinely asked of Roger is ‘how uncomfortable are dentures?’.

“Even when dentures are sculpted to the precise shape of a customer’s mouth, they can take some getting used to,” he concedes. “And, yet, it’s amazing just how quick our facial muscles adapt to them. If not, shaping them further for a better fit is not a problem at all.”

Pair put own spin on creativity The mother daughter bond is often one of the strongest and that’s no exception when it comes to Glenys Duff and daughter Kerry Collins whose shared interest in textile art weaves a special magic between the two as HELEN PERRY discovered.

S

ome people discover their creative side by accident but mother and daughter artisans, Glenys Duff and Kerry Collins, believe their connection to fabric runs in their veins.

“It’s a generational thing,” says textile artist Kerry. “Mum’s big love is weaving, her mother was a tailor and her grandmother was skilled in crochet.

I learnt to knit and sew young from both mum and Nana; from the beginning I loved the texture and feel of fabrics.”

As for Glenys, sewing and knitting for a young family was a given but it was a weaving night class at Waiuku College some 40 years ago which sparked a lifetime interest in spinning and, more specifically, weaving.

Although she maintains she never stops learning, many people consider Glenys to be a master weaver, her workmanship being of the highest quality.

“My family originated from Scotland and, strangely, I’ve discovered a several times grandfather on my mother’s side was a weaver by profession. Perhaps that love, and some of his skills, have unconsciously passed down our line.”

“Although she no longer weaves heavy rugs – ‘my shoulders won’t take it anymore” – Glenys has several looms, her focus being on weaving wool and silk.

“These days I concentrate on throws, rugs, scarves, tea towels – they last forever – and cloth which is snapped up for garments,” Glenys says. “I’m part of a group which orders our silk from overseas but our wool is sourced locally.”

With a well set up studio at home, and never short of projects, Glenys still ensures she attends regular meetings of the Waiuku Spinners and Weavers (fortnightly on Tuesdays and alternate Wednesdays) and a Weaving Group held fortnightly on Saturdays.

“It seems the lockdowns encouraged people to re-examine skills which were largely becoming lost to this generation.

An upswing of interest in knitting and baking was noticed everywhere but other crafts also enjoyed a resurgence of interest.

“Our Saturday weaving group was started to accommodate women who work during the week and now our youngest member is in her mid 20s. It’s pleasing to see a growing interest and I enjoy guiding newcomers.”

Busy though she is, Glenys is also preparing to take part in the Franklin Arts Trail at Labour Weekend (see side bar).

Working alongside her will be daughter, Kerry whose interest in fabrics has taken a different direction.

Owner of the Pollok Arts and Crafts Co-operative, which she operates with the assistance of four volunteers, Kerry’s gift for needlework in its various forms was evident at an early age.

“Sewing was just something everyone did in the country but I was always keen to explore further. When Otaua School offered a range of electives, I was the only student who opted for embroidery.

Having the class to myself meant I covered just about everything. I couldn’t have been happier.”

Later Kerry worked for Duthies, the former haberdashery in Waiuku. The store’s eclectic mix opened her eyes to the beauty and diversity of fabrics and that’s where her interest in quilting was aroused and she joined a Saturday morning class in Pukekohe.

“Gradually I moved on from traditional quilting to art quilts including dyeing my own fabrics and it’s this area I’m keen to pursue especially after visiting Japan on a textile tour early this year. While there, we studied indigo dyeing which I’m now taking up in a big way.”

Kerry says every piece of fabric she creates is a one off. I use tie dyeing, stencils, knotting and folding techniques to create unique patterns. I’m now working towards launching my own fabric line under the name of Bent Tree Textiles.”

As with her mother, Kerry’s days are filled with art, not just her own quilting and participation in quilting groups, but overseeing the Pollok Co-op and the wide variety of work which is showcased and sold through the gallery and shop.

What’s more, like Glenys, she is now preparing for the Franklin Arts Trail at Labour Weekend.

“There’s a lot to do. Mum and I will be working out of the Grahams Beach Hall all three days with her demonstrating weaving while I’ll be doing indigo dyeing.

In addition, we five volunteers who run the Pollok Co-Op will each take up one wall of the gallery to showcase our particular form of creativity. As with the rest of the trail, all work will be for sale so, right now, there’s no time to waste.” www.ruralliving.co.nz

TIPS:

Preheat the oven to 150°C. Lamb – Season the lamb with a little salt and pepper. Place the flour in a bag with the chops and toss to coat. Heat the butter over a high heat in a large ovenproof saucepan (or a regular pan then transfer to a casserole dish later).

Sear the chops a few at a time to brown them on both sides. Set the chops aside.

Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook for a few minutes on a high heat. Add the wine, (if using) and let it bubble up for 30 seconds. Add the stock, thyme, rosemary stick, bay leaves, garlic and the tomatoes.

Transfer to an ovenproof dish, cover and cook in the oven for 2 1/2 hours (or transfer to a slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours).

Vegetables – Steam the vegetables until tender. Add a little oil, salt and pepper then toss to coat.

To serve – Serve the lamb stew in large bowls, topped with freshly steamed vegetables.

ouse-proud homeowners worldwide have spoken – cacti are our favourite houseplants.

These prickly customers may not be to everyone’s taste but according to www.homehow.co.uk, they are the most popular, on Instagram at least.

Topping the table with almost 24 million hashtags, cacti are being mentioned more often than other houseplant, followed by hoya (at just over

two million) and monstera (1.6 million).

While these plants appear to be more in vogue, as with any popularity list, there are also plants that are not quite so on trend – aloe vera, string of pearls and corn plants, all rated below the 100,000 hashtag mark.

Cacti may be flavour of the month (data was extracted in September 2020) but as trends can be fickle, corn plants could be due a comeback... much like lava lamps.

he challenge of Covid-19 lockdowns to your business lies in the attitude of the community to another lockdown and a resulting inability to disperse frustration thus causing a downturn in the business economy with stress everywhere.

To overcome this challenge, business owners need to communicate furiously with their customer base telling them what they offer, why they are different, and how to do business with them, online, by phone, email or via social media.

This makes it easy for customers to continue buying from them.

Don’t assume customers remember what you or your services provide, or even what your prices are. Remind them of the benefits of doing business with you.

A great exercise is to create a list of 21 reasons or benefits for doing business with you and release one benefit each day of the month….there are 21 working days in most months. You can do this by email, on Facebook, and in your newsletters. Attach a benefit to your quotes and provide one via daily phone calls.

Use e-news software such as Mailchimp, to send your customers free news complete with your logo and photos all within an easyto-use template. Alternatively, use another e-news template; even Xero has an e-news send package.

Post daily on Facebook, photos and stories about how you have helped customers succeed – this will attract attention and arouse positive interest in your business.

Remember to communicate to staff those points you want them to talk to customers about. Discuss with them your plans for handling any further lockdown. You can even do this remotely via online video.

The more staff members believe you have a vision, the more they will exhibit confidence to your customers and to each other. If you can afford it, advertise in media which communicates to your target market; do so by making good use of government funds if you get them.

The more you communicate, the more your customers and staff see and read and want to participate by buying from you.

I

n September, Barfoot & Thompson recorded the highest number of sales in a month since the peak of the last property cycle in 2017.

Managing director of Barfoot & Thompson, Peter Thompson said the key to those high sales numbers was the number of new listings that came on to the market.

“At 1947, [it] was the highest number of [listings] in a month since October 2018, and 43.8 percent higher than in August of this year,” he confirmed.

In addition, Barfoot & Thompson sold 1099 properties in September which was 4.2 percent higher than in August and 42.5 percent higher than sales numbers in September last year.

The increase in listings created a competitive market which had a direct influence on prices. September’s average price was 2 percent higher than the average achieved across the previous three months; the median price at $930,000 was up 2.9 percent. Prices paid by buyers showed confidence that prices are likely to hold firm over the medium term.

Nearly half (47 percent) of sales in the month were for properties that sold in excess of $1 million and, of these, 7.6 percent of all sales were in excess of $2 million.

The South Auckland rural and lifestyle markets have shared in the buying activity experienced in urban areas post Covid-19 lockdowns.

There has been strong demand for properties in the $1 million to $2 million price category, particularly around Pukekohe. Lifestyle buyers have also been interested in one hectare lots and land with transferable building rights.
