From the editor... natural result of establishing this new city is still very much theory and while I believe we will see some new business growth, I wonder how much and I wonder about the ongoing number of trucks on our single lane rural roads not to mention an under pressure motorway.

If roads remain as they are, I can’t see major companies rushing to set up out our way.

With many unanswered questions regarding highway upkeep now and in the future, it’s enough to make a grown editor hit the bottle instead of the road.

So, perhaps the answer is to grab a cuppa and sit down with the latest issue of Rural Living. Read about a man who really does know trains and a golfer whose natural ability is par for the course. There’s a whole lot more too, so enjoy, and I’ll catch you all next month...if I make it down the road to work.

that very morning and I wondered if the poor relation – you know, the Southern Motorway, that strip of highway leading to the bulk of New Zealand – would ever receive such generous treatment.

It wasn’t enough to make me pack my bags and go west but it did make me crotchety. Then, just as I was having a rant, I heard about the plan for a new city at Paerata – a projected 500,000 people by the year 2050. I’m sure I’ll be long gone but my grandies won’t and with am influx of new housing already underway throughout Franklin, the question of roads immediately came to mind.

I haven’t heard a Dickie-boo about widening any of our local roads although someone suggested the railway will solve all such problems. Oh yeah! Considering what a battle it has been to secure electrification between Papakura and Pukekohe, I’m a bit sceptical; not so much about a train service as such, but definitely about an adequate service which will take people to where they need to go.

Furthermore, if as suggested, business growth will follow residential expansion, will the railway here also cater for long haul freight? That major industry will be a

hile New Zealand’s political arena may still be the talk about town, I’ve been visiting Tauranga, Te Awamutu, Rotorua and more. Despite admiring our green countryside and spring flowers, I have been most struck by the sorry state of our roads, both locally and further afield.

It seems wherever I go, there is broken seal, rough patching, pot holes and uneven surfaces – not good on my tyres, that’s for sure. And, while there are road works, here, there and everywhere, few seem to be addressing these particular issues.

What’s more, I can see mini potholes becoming maxi sinkholes...Oh, wasn’t that the case in Kingseat Road a while back?

Forgive me if I sound grumpy but I think my exasperation has escalated after a quick visit to West Auckland. I was astounded by the beautiful North-Western motorway, especially between Pt Chevalier and Te Atatu where I exited. In some parts there were five lanes on my side of the centre barrier. The ease of travelling was sheer bliss and this at 9.30am on a weekday!

ALL StEAMED UP: You don’t have to be ‘loco’ to work at Glenbrook Vintage Railway, but it certainly helps! Recently, Rural Living made the acquaintance of two local loco jokers who have taken playing with trains to quite the extreme.

The little railway that could!

They may not work on the railroad all the livelong day, but John St Julian and Alan Carline have both been helping keep the wheels at Glenbrook Vintage Railway in spin for many years, as JON RAWLINSON recently discovered.

I

’m a Thomas the Tank Engine fan and have been since childhood when a certain former musician used to tell me (on the telly) all about this lovable loco’s adventures. But, unless Ringo Starr accepts my invitation to Glenbrook Vintage Railway’s next ‘Day out with Thomas’, I think I’ll go off the Beatles a bit!

Providing an experience faithful (or as near as possible) to the world of Thomas (aka a 1950s’ Bagnall) has been a labour of love for long-time volunteer, John St Julian, since Glenbrook Vintage Railway (GVR) began running these events.

“The faces have to be just right and if we have a name on an engine, it needs to be covered up. They even send people over to check everything is being run as it should. The events are costly to run, but they are very popular too,” he explains.

“The trouble is that we’re already so well known (in a way). When you mention GVR, people say ‘oh, I must take the kids there’, which is fine, but we have a lot more to offer.”

One upcoming addition is a dining car offering a first class experience suited to adults and families as well as big kids like me. It’s expected to join the historic 6 — Rural Living — December 2017

railway’s regular schedule next year.

Visitors will be able to enjoy three or four courses of restaurant quality meals as well as beverages while drinking in the scenery as they steam through the countryside, 1920s style.

“The parlour [bar] car, which launched on Queen’s Birthday Weekend this year, has been half the job. I’ve been the main instigator of this project but Al [Alan Carline] has done most of the physical work on the carriages. I’m very keen to see it succeed,” says John.

“The idea is to have your drinkies in the parlour car then move into the dining car for a meal, then back for your coffee. This should allow us to bring in a wider range of visitors.”

Extra revenue which should roll in as a result will be put to good use by the Railway Enthusiasts Society (which operates GVR) in preserving a little slice of our past.

Earlier this year, a turntable was added to Glenbrook Station. This allows engines to be more easily and cost effectively turned around. But, because what goes around will come around, another good turn is also waiting on the wayside.

“We’re now looking to add a roundhouse, which is a traditional loco shed. We have locomotives and wagons everywhere so this will mean having more on display.”

The roundhouse will be as faithful a recreation as possible, yet will be more accessible to visitors than those of days gone by, John explains.

More recent additions, two 1950s’ diesel locomotives, will also help raise funds to further shunt plans in the right direction, including more excursions on the mainline.

“Our steam excursions can’t travel as far because of crewing issues. There are very few steam-qualified drivers these days and they can run out of hours, whereas there are plenty more guys qualified to drive diesels,” adds John.

In the meantime, Thomas also continues to play his part at pulling in the punters. A need for steam

F

ollowing the closure of the old Waiuku branch line in the late 1960s, the Railway Enthusiasts Society set about preserving its steam heritage by establishing the Glenbrook Vintage Railway (GVR). At the time, Alan Carline was there and, 40 years later, he still is!

GVR’s rolling stock dates back to the 1880s, although the oldest engine no longer runs; in a way, Alan doesn’t run either...when it comes to driving, that is.

“I mainly work on the carriages these days. My reflexes have slowed down a bit so I thought I’d give the young jokers a go,” he smiles.

‘Loco’ about locomotives since he was a child, Alan followed a family tradition – which included grandfather and great uncles – of life on the lines.

“When I was at school, I loved metalwork; if I didn’t like a class I’d just go over to the workshop instead. I wanted to go on locos but my mother said: ‘we’re not having another one in the family!’”

And yet, when GVR’s first engine rolled out of the station in 1977, the former

builder from the North Shore answered the call of the steam whistle.

Just a year later, John St Julian – who had also long harboured a head full of dreams of steam – joined Alan at the railway.

“I’m a steam nut from way back,” John reveals. “I was raised right beside the main northern line out of Sydney so I saw all sorts of trains (mainly steam) when I was a young fellow.

“I used to ride all over New South Wales.

When you went out in the bush, the crews were pretty easy going and most of the firemen were willing to throw you the shovel, but the drivers weren’t too keen on giving up the controls!”

In 1971, John was transferred to Christchurch, where he became involved with the Ferrymead Railway and acquired his ‘driver’s ticket.’ Following a further transfer in 1978 he joined the team at GVR. However, a hectic work schedule from the mid ‘80s kept John too busy (ironically) with travel to volunteer.

“I was engineering manager for Goodman Fielder and we had operations

throughout Australia and the Pacific.

At one stage, I was overseeing the engineering at 17 mills,” he says.

“Work also sent me to Europe several times and I’ve made trips to England, so I’ve travelled on about 20 heritage railways over there. But rather than try and re-invent the wheel I found it best to learn from other people, so I picked up plenty of good ideas.”

After he retired in 2005, John was back working on the railroad, his engineering experience proving most beneficial.

“My input into this place has mainly been mechanical and engineering. For me, it’s often more fun fixing things than driving,” he says.

ach day I ask myself, when will summer arrive? We seem to have had such a mixed bag of weather and although, as I sit here writing, it is finally a nice, fine morning with warm sun, nevertheless there is still a rather chilly breeze.

What’s more, the last few days have been just awful and last week, amongst the showers, we were even hit by big hailstones for about five minutes. An hour later the sun came out and there were no obvious signs of the storm.

This month I am deviating from my usual rural chat to air some grievances about our badly maintained roads. When one lives away from the main roads it is particularly noticeable as to how long it takes for repairs to be made to minor potholes and to other more major roadworks which present a danger to motorists.

One of the worst examples is on route from Glenbrook Rd to Patumahoe. Several months ago the edge of the road gave way and the slip protruded well into the sealed area. Wisely, those responsible for road maintenance placed cones around the slip and warning signs for oncoming motorists.

That was fine but the road stayed that way for several weeks and the slip became bigger and bigger. The road was then

closed and a detour put in place so repairs could be made.

Finally, these were completed but, within a week, the other side of the road

also collapsed. This is just now being repaired and I have to ask why has it taken so long to carry out those repairs on a very busy stretch of road where I consider the situation to have been very dangerous for motorists?

While on the subject of roads and their maintenance, I should mention our experience of last week. When travelling to a family wedding in Tauranga we were held up for some time by roadworks between Matamata and the Kaimai Ranges.

When we were given the all clear to move on there was a large sign which urged us to wash the car that day as cement had been spread on the road.

That was fine except our timetable gave us no chance of washing the car that day.

We stayed overnight in Tauranga after the wedding then headed back to Auckland the following morning. At home I immediately started hosing off the cement but it was near impossible to move it.

I spent several hours scrubbing thick, dried cement off the car and became more annoyed by the minute. I really do consider those responsible for the road works should not have allowed cars to drive on that thick, slushy cement which could have potentially ruined the paintwork on vehicles!

Now, to something much nicer – naming our foal. As I am still receiving name suggestions I am keeping the competition open until next month when the winner will be announced. I’ve had more than 30 entries so far with some great names in the mix so keep those entries coming – and good luck!

And, that’s all for this month – I can’t wait for Santa!

Strike while the fly is hot!

Be prepared! As the heat increases flies will be winging their way to New Zealand farms by the drove and beating them off is no easy matter. However, Ravensdown Animal Health technical manager, PAUL McKEE has some advice.

T

he prospect of having to manage fly populations resistant to chemical treatments is becoming a reality for an increasing number of New Zealand farmers.

Without making changes to the way in which we have been using chemicals, we can expect the future costs of fly strike to significantly increase.

One critical strategy will be to make it increasingly difficult for flies to develop resistance to treatments.

This is best achieved by farmers ensuring chemicals are always applied correctly and at the recommended rates. In other words, there is always a cost when taking short cuts to save a few cents in volumes of chemical used or seconds in product application.

In addition to the correct application of chemicals, farmers can also change from relying on single active treatments to innovative combination treatments designed to slow the development of chemical resistance.

As has been recommended with controlling parasitic worms, exposing flies to simultaneous treatments of different actives will make it harder for resistance to be developed.

Ravensdown has worked with a New Zealand company to develop two unique combination products designed to provide both effective flystrike protection and reduce the development of fly resistance. ◆◆Saturate® Gold is a unique dip

concentrate combining the long acting insect growth regulators (IGR’s) cyromazine and diflubenzuron. It is for use in showers and jetting units on sheep up to six weeks off shears, providing up to 12 weeks protection from fly strike.

Ravensdown recommends Saturate Gold for summer fly strike prevention programmes.

With the inclusion of diflubenzuron farmers also get the additional benefit of long term lice control (something that cyromazine or dicyclanil cannot do). ◆◆Fleeceguard® is a unique, water-based pour-on which combines the actions of an IGR (diflubenzuron) and synthetic pyrethroid (deltamethrin) to provide up to 14 weeks protection from flystrike. Both actives also provide control of lice. Fleeceguard can be applied to sheep immediately off shears and up to six weeks of wool growth. The inclusion of deltamethrin provides a rapid knock down for fly and lice compared to IGR-only pour-on’s. An added feature of Fleeceguard is a really short meat withholding period of seven days which gives farmers more options with their stock.

To achieve the full benefits from using combination products, the best time to start using them is when no resistant fly populations exist on your farm. Developing an integrated flystrike management programme will lead to improved animal health and farm profitability.

ore than 20,000 New Zealanders are thought to live with the debilitating disorder, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) which has baffled experts and patients alike for many years.

However, world leading, CFS/ME specialist, Dr Rosamund Vallings has been a lifeline for many sufferers and recently she produced her third book on the subject, The Pocket Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME. Dr Vallings has been instrumental in helping many patients manage their symptoms and to understand exactly what is going on with their bodies.

Symptoms include exhaustion, muscle pain, mental exhaustion, enlarged lymph nodes, headaches and difficulty fighting infections; at its most extreme sufferers can be bed-ridden requiring 24/7 care.

“Sufferers can feel socially isolated and depressed so, a good network of support is essential,” she says.

A Clevedon local, Dr Vallings was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008 for services to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is a past nominee for NZ Woman of the Year and last year was recipient of the Nelson Gantz Award for Outstanding Clinician by the International Association of CFS/ME. Rural Living leaned Over The Gate to ask her about her work.

How long have you lived in Clevedon?

in London, then known as Royal Free Disease. I unexpectedly became involved in some CFS/ME research after settling here in Auckland, which inspired me to further my studies.

I lived in Bucklands Beach from 1967 and moved to Clevedon 22 years ago, attracted by the more rural lifestyle.

I am their medical advisor, and I work very closely with them. It is very important to have a lead organisation to raise awareness, provide accurate information and to support the many patients and families with this illness.

Do you live on a lifestyle block?

Yes, we have 50 acres, mostly native bush.

We also have 12 Wiltshire sheep, and we breed from them each year. We grow most of our own fruit and veges.

We understand you first learnt of CFS/ ME while studying in the UK. What was it about this condition which inspired you to learn more?

When did you start practising as a GP in Bucklands Beach?

50 years ago in 1967 – I slowly built up my own practice.

How long have you been practising at Howick Health and Medical?

I joined there with Dr Ray Khoo and colleagues in 2005.

We understand one of your patients is former Rugby League player, Richie Barnett, who is now a spokesperson for ANZMES (Associated New Zealand ME Society). How important is it that high profile people who are affected step forward to raise awareness?

Very important, particularly having someone like Richie, who eloquently describes how he became ill and then managed his health to achieve a good level of health.

How closely do you work with organisations such as ANZMES and how vital is their role?

In brief, why did you decide to write your book, The Pocket Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME? I had already written two books about the illness, one a complete overview and then one for teens. I felt the time had come for a shorter, easy-to-read version which was right up to date with the latest exciting research.

Since its release earlier this year, how well has it been received?

It has been very popularly received.

Considering these conditions affect more than 20,000 Kiwis, is the Ministry of Health doing enough to support research and treatment?

I think the MOH has been very supportive.

There will never be enough money for research/treatment in medicine. But I would like to see dedicated CFS/ME clinics established in main centres. Many patients with this complex illness go undiagnosed, or cannot afford to pay for private advice and treatment.

We understand the condition’s first symptoms often present as extreme mental and physical exhaustion, muscle pain, headaches, sleep problems and enlarged lymph nodes. Physical or mental stress can make a person more vulnerable. As such symptoms are quite common, how difficult is CFS/ME to diagnose?

Yes, this illness is very difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are common in general practice. One has to go through a long process of eliminating other medical conditions and there are often time constraints in a GP consultation which also makes it difficult.

Do many people in New Zealand go through life unaware of their condition?

A lot of people never get a firm diagnosis, although awareness is improving. There is more teaching about the illness in medical schools and ongoing post-graduate medical education. Patients do need ongoing surveillance too.

How can it be treated? Will it ever be cured?

I do not think at this stage we should be using the word “cure” – it is more a case of doing everything we know to manage the illness, relying on accurate research, appropriate medication etc.

You were 2016’s Nelson Gantz Award winner for Outstanding Clinician by the International Association for CFS/ME and you are a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. How valued were those honours and do they assist in spreading awareness of your work?

If you could grow any plant or raise any animal (real or imagined), what and why?

I would grow more kowhai trees to attract tuis and native pigeons. I would also raise another Jack Russell terrier – a wonderful intelligent companion, and animals such as this are great for stress relief!

If you could be Minister for Health for one day, what would you do first?

I would try to reduce some of the bureaucracy!

If you could invite any three doctors (living or dead, MDs or PHDs) to dinner, who and why?

Dr Alice Bush – an outstanding NZ paediatrician, whose wisdom supported and guided me as a young doctor when I first came to New Zealand in 1966.

Dr Melvin Ramsey – who first wrote about Royal Free Disease in 1955 in London Dr Sarah Dalziel (my GP daughter) – a wonderful cook who could produce the meal.

And, if I could invite one other person I would include Hammurabi – an ancient Babylonian philosopher and emperor who accurately described ME/CFS in the 18th century BC! (He may not have been a doctor).

Green dairying – minding our pees Cows could be forced to answer a new call of nature should a more modern approach to dairy take hold, Dr Nic Lees believes.

New research suggests sheep may be much better at helping New Zealand live the clean green dream than their cow counterparts have been able to manage, the Lincoln University lecturer says.

In particular, this is because sheep produce lower volumes of urine than cows, the effects of nitrogen leaching on the environment are lessened when ovines, rather than bovines, are raised for milking, “Future environmental constraints make milking sheep a more sustainable option than milking cows,” he says.

“Consumers are increasingly looking for foods that align with their personal values, such as environmental sustainability, animal welfare, fair trade and organic production.”

And, it seems the market agrees, with demand for sheep milk growing by 10-20 percent each year, Dr Lees confirms.

O’Connor could bridge rural/ urban divide While city folk (largely) painted their pieces of New Zealand’s electoral map red, NZ’s countryside voters (for the most part) elected to bid for the men and women in blue. Despite this, New Zealand’s Young Farmers appear prepared to work with a coalition of many colours.

“As a non-partisan organisation we work alongside all parties and we look forward to having discussions with the new team at the helm to see how we can both further the cause of the New Zealand primary sector,” NZ Young Farmers’ CEO confirmed recently. We know that education, and employment of our youth are high priorities for this new Government and believe we can add to that conversation with the many programmes we facilitate.”

The Government’s appointment of former NZ Young Farmer member, Damien O’Connor, as Minister of Agriculture, Biosecurity and Rural Communities, is heartening, Mr Copeland adds.

Barber's pole worm Dr Laura Schwerdtfeger BVSc BSc Haemonchus contortus, commonly known as barber’s pole, is a blood-sucking parasite which is found in the stomach of sheep, goats and alpacas. It reproduces very quickly and produces thousands of eggs per day.

As a result, sufficient numbers of these worms can suck all the blood out of an animal within a number of days. Barber’s pole does not cause scouring, so sudden death may be the first and only sign of infection.

If lucky enough to have this parasitic infection diagnosed early, you may notice that the animal appears weak, lethargic and may separate itself from the rest of the flock. Affected animals are usually anaemic and a blood transfusion may be required.

Barber’s pole thrives in the warm and wet months between January and April. During these months, egg numbers on pasture can build up to exponential numbers.

In ideal conditions, this parasite can complete a life cycle in just 10-14 days and, subsequently, drenches which are specific, and have persistent activity, are recommended.

Whilst lambs, goat kids and crias

are most susceptible to infection, high worm burdens can also cause deaths in adult animals.

Since this parasite is life threatening, causing sudden illness, prevention is always better than cure. Genesis Ultra is the preferred oral drench recommended to both prevent infection and treat actively infected animals.

This product has persistent activity lasting 42 days. Matrix oral drench can also be used; however, this drench lacks persistent activity and therefore animals which are actively infected with barber’s pole will require drenching with Matrix every 3 weeks to control disease.

holding period if picking lambs for slaughter as some are quite long, and it also pays to know the resistance status of your farm when deciding when and which product to use.

A GOOD SIGN Though not long living in Franklin, I regularly drive along Manukau Rd in Pukekohe and there is one business that always makes me smile. here’s the All Blacks, the Tall Blacks and now the 'Call Blacks' as two Kiwis, who can honk and quack with the best, have been

dubbed.

Nelson schoolgirl Holly Irvine and Otago’s Hunter Morrow have taken out major wins at the World Waterfowl Calling Championships in the USA, their success hailed as “an amazing achievement.”

Hunter, a builder and New Zealand’s reigning champ, came second in the Open Duck division and third in Live Goose calling. Holly (13) took out third place in the junior duck calling division.

Holly is now vowing to return with the aim of winning the junior division and being best in the world.

Organiser of the New Zealand championships, Adam Rayner, says it was an amazing result for the pair.

“Hunter’s placing was the highest ever by a Kiwi while Holly was the only female competitor and one of the youngest competing.

“New Zealanders should appreciate just how big an achievement this is – these two are right up there with the world’s best,” says Mr Rayner who adds

Hickman and the machine In some back woods places in the world, the most sophisticated biosecurity technology employed may be some ‘Hick-man’s’ old smell-hound but, at Auckland airport, it’s not a job that’s gone (only) to the dogs.

New x-ray machinery targeting hand baggage – to be trialled at the airport during summer – is expected to be a valuable addition in identifying pests, Brett Hickman from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) says.

“Nearly 90% of seizures of fruit fly host materials are from hand baggage... This is an area that has the highest risk of bringing fruit fly into NZ. “[The new machine] produces high quality images [and] provides a side and top view of bags instead of just a single view... It is part of a layered approach to managing risk that includes detector dogs and careful risk assessment.”

So, while the nose may know, X-ray expects to ensure MPI’s ‘eyes’ are never wide shut.

Dealing with a

broody hen!

T

hank goodness summer is fast approaching after what has to be the longest, wettest year for some time.

Nevertheless, now is a good time to remember the necessity of clean, cool, fresh water for our feathered friends.

It is surprising how much more your flock will drink as the temperatures rise so ensure they have good clean water on hand in suitable containers such as our very popular top-fill, 18ltr Drink-o-Matic.

It’s not a bad idea, either, to add some Stockmans Friend AHE to the water on a regular basis. This will provide a tonic for your flock and keep them in tip-top condition through some heavy egg producing months.

This is also the time when some of your flock are likely to become broody and unless you intend to let them sit and hatch some eggs, there are some humane ways to help break the cycle and have a broody hen back in the egg-laying flock reasonably quickly.

The faster action is taken, the quicker the results!

Firstly, it is necessary to lower the bird’s

temperature, however, the old habit of dunking them in water, while on the right track, is not particularly kind.

The recommended way to cool a hen down is to put her in a wire-based cage with good air circulation underneath.

It is essential to provide fresh, cool water and a food supply and place the cage somewhere undercover in a bright, but not fully sunlit, position.

Preferably, it should be placed near where there is a bit of activity going on so that it keeps your hen from going into an egg-hatching “trance”.

An active, bright place is the exact opposite to what a hen would chose as a spot to make a nest and hatch eggs – somewhere quiet and out of the way with a nice soft base and relatively dark!

Usually a couple of days in the right cage, in the right location, will be enough to break the hen from her desire to sit, but be warned – with the warmer weather this will not be the last time she will sit!

Catch-up chores require caution

ow that the sun is starting to shine, farmers and land owners may be rubbing their hands with glee, eager to catch-up on seasonal work long-delayed by the wet winter.

However, WorkSafe New Zealand is urging large block landowners to take extra care as they get on to a multitude of jobs.

WorkSafe agriculture sector lead Al McCone says because winter and the start of spring were exceptionally wet, rain and slips may have changed the risk profile on farms.

“Tracks may have been affected which means more care is needed in looking out for potholes and hidden ditches, especially now that warmer temperatures have brought on spring grass growth that can cover these on infrequently used areas of the farm,” Mr McCone says.

“Ensuring you are using the right vehicle

for the conditions and paying attention to the terrain is crucial. The fact that much work has been delayed means there will be some pressure to get tasks completed on time.

However, many serious incidents we attend result from people trying to complete tasks in a hurry, or where they are fatigued but try to fit in ‘one more job.‘ This warning applies as much to contractors as it does to farmers because this normally busy time of year has turned into a race to try and satisfy demand.

“Contractors need to ensure they have sufficient space for appropriate rest and nutrition, otherwise they are in danger of making poor decisions, some of which may result in an incident where they end up off work for some time – or permanently,” Mr McCone says.

“Communicating – face-to-face, by email, phone whatever works best – should happen before work starts so

everybody clearly understands who is doing what job where, what risks are involved and how these are being managed.”

He says this includes paying attention to physical changes to the landscape such as slippery surfaces resulting from wet weather, and work-related activities such as spraying.

“Where a contractor is harvesting wood, communication between farmer and contractor about overlapping duties is all the more important as forestry workers may not be as familiar with on-farm risks as farm contractors.

“Woodlots planted 25 to 40 years ago are ready to harvest but farmers with woodlots need to make sure experienced contractors are taken on to do this difficult and dangerous work. This is particularly important if a woodlot is on a steep slope or has been left a few years longer until the price of wood rises.”

Gunning for island pests

I

t’s been a crazy-busy month out there in the pest control world so, to those of you still waiting patiently for me, I WILL get there!

The start of October saw me loading up and heading out to the Barrier where I shot 3786 rabbits over 18 nights! Yes, you read correct, three thousand, seven hundred and eighty six!

It had been three years since I last shot on the island and the old bunnies had certainly made the most of my absence.

The final 1500 or so were all juveniles being pumped out of huge and complex warren systems. Shooting these warrens at night was like some kind of macabre side-show game with an endless number of bunnies popping up to see what was going on, even as their comrades fell around them.

After such a long break it was really nice catching up with everyone on the island, a few have passed away in my

absence and a few newbies have arrived seeking the idyllic lifestyle still obtainable out there.

Overall the Barrier was doing really well and I spent countless days watching kaka climb up and down flaxes right outside my hut – total clowns. In addition, banded rail chicks, born just before I arrived, were fully fledged and starting to come right into the house by the time I left!

I arrived back home to urgent calls for help with a suspected cat on another gulf island which was supposed to be pest-free. I jumped at the chance to help, so un-packed, re-packed and headed out there.

It had been some 10 years since I had been on this particular island and back then we had just finished removing 25,000 rabbits to enable full ecological restoration.

In my absence DOC has done some amazing work and I hardly recognised the place. What was once pretty much

bare earth is now young forest. I worked in among saddlebacks, kakariki, kiwi and tuatara; talk about progress!

Being back there made me quite nostalgic. To think that what we had done back in the 1990s paved the way for sanctuaries like this really brought home just what a charmed life I have had so far.

I’m now briefly back on “civilian ops”, ticking some readers off the rabbit control list before I head for Tawharanui Open Sanctuary.

This mainland site has mirrored what we have done on various islands; visitors can now arrive there and be almost guaranteed to see rarities such as takahe within a short walk. We are all very, very lucky to live where we do.

Taratahi takes country to town

oung Aucklanders who want to put their career feet firmly on the land no longer have to travel out of town for some indispensable areas of training.

Taratahi Agriculture Training Centre’s strong relationship with the Manukau Institute of Technology is opening doors to a world of rural careers for Auckland students. Taratahi Auckland regional manager, Conrad Herewini says being located at the MIT campus means students are exposed to a wide range of primary sector training options.

The Level 1 and 2 courses in chainsaws, fencing and tractors are particularly suitable for Year 11, 12 and 13, students.

There is also a Trade Academy Primary Industries pilot for Level 1 and 2, which focuses on giving students skills in basic aspects of horticulture.

Mr Herewini says more and more urban people are considering rural career options and the new courses being located in the heart of South Auckland gives them easier access to training.

ow, what a busy month this has been. We have just finished a week celebrating five birthdays and, at the end of that week, a happy family wedding. I have to say it is all or nothing with us!

We were so lucky with the wedding.

It was down in Tauranga and the sun shone all day. I had bought a new dress from Annah Stretton and I also picked up a fabulous pair of shoes that looked great with my dress. However, it was really essential for my outfit that the weather was warm and it was.

My Waiau Pa friends came down to the event too so we were assured of lots of fun. On the way down we called into the Kaimai Cheese Factory at Waharoa and had a lovely lunch at the cafe where we also bought some of their super cheeses.

Our return trip took us through the Karangahake Gorge, a route we haven’t taken for years. It was so beautiful and although a bit slower, it was fun. Emma, our Pukekohe daughter, drove us home so we were like the old folks out on a day trip but it was great to be free to look around.

The wedding was at Bethlehem and we all stayed in the local motor inn.

While, on one hand we had a family marriage, we also said good bye to one daughter who now is living in Dubai. At home we continue to paint and garden, slowly making the property look a bit more like home.

We are developing a new outdoor living area and when I rang our builder to see when and if he could build an outdoor screen I was in luck. He had two days free before starting a big job so the screen was built before I knew it.

Now, I want a roll-down blind to block the wind in that area so I have had people from Cairn Awnings come and make some suggestions. I am still not sure that at our age doing up a property is a great idea but, for sure, we are never bored.

Also this month we went to the movies

in Pukekohe with our Waiau Pa friends.

We saw Murder on the Orient Express and afterwards enjoyed dinner at Alfonso’s. I haven’t been there for a while but I have to say the meal was super.

On another note, while travelling home recently I discovered the perfect place to pick up vegetables and nice cheese and that’s at the newly named, Paddock to Pantry. Big changes are happening there but so handy for me.

At long last Brian is over the dreadful cough that has plagued him for months and, with the sun shining more often, I think everyone will start to feel better. It has been the worst spring I can remember although the garden has certainly enjoyed the wet, warm conditions.

Well that’s it for this last issue before Christmas. It will be here in no time but, really, right now it’s roll on summer, a good summer, that is!

Wise counsel inspires

through painful times

New Zealand’s health services, including the mental health system, have been under scrutiny this year with criticism of funding and care coming from many parties. Rural Living spoke to one man for whom these issues have hit particularly close to home.

H

ealth workers, care organisations, patients and politicians have all expressed concern and frustration at ‘cracks’ in the country’s mental health system, inadequate health funding and overall inadequacies across the wider health arena.

Now, the new government has pledged to make an extra $8 billion investment in health over four years and, among its raft of objectives, it has promised to streamline cancer care in New Zealand by establishing a National Cancer Agency. It has also pledged to initiate within the first 100 days, a review of mental health and addiction services to identify gaps in services.

But many are sure to ask is enough being done quickly enough especially in the area of mental health services.

One person who could, perhaps, pass comment, is Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Barnett.

Last month Mr Barnett was the subject of Over the Gate but his moving responses to questions on his personal battle with throat cancer and the tragic loss of his son to suicide prompted Rural Living to publish these separately.

Mr Barnett’s poignant insights highlight the difficulties faced by those in a health crisis and but his words of encouragement and hope reveal how he coped with personal challenges.

On coping with diagnosis, followed by successful but severe treatment for throat cancer, Mr Barnett said: Attitude. I still have fallout from the side effects of cancer but I had an extremely supportive wife and understanding children. I was also supported by a committed employer and board.

Here is a piece I wrote for [former All Black] the late Jock Hobbs’ book – he was diagnosed about the same time and we communicated during my treatment.

It may seem odd, but Jock and I never discussed rugby. My relationship with him was an extension of the man who gave to

At the end of April 2010, I was diagnosed with throat cancer. Jock received similar news at about the same time. We knew each other, but not well. That changed over the next six months and has changed the way I live my life.

My diagnosis was confirmed by phone on the last Friday afternoon in April. At the time I only knew I had cancer. I had no idea where, no idea how bad and my most demanding question was – “how long?”

My next meeting was with my doctor on Monday morning. So that weekend I died a hundred deaths and shed a thousand tears.

Before long I was in a regime of radiation and chemotherapy with overwhelming family prayer and support. Nevertheless, what I needed was to communicate with someone who knew intimately the issues I was dealing with. I approached Jock.

We tended to communicate by email.

Sometimes I thought Jock must be the

worst typist in Wellington. He always responded but often his messages were short and concise or at other times a string of words, each with a message but always providing hope.

The message that had the greatest impact on me, and which showed the measure of Jock, came near the end of my treatment.

Anyone who has experienced cancer and the cruelty of the cure, will know the nights I refer to – lying awake, early morning, no hope, just despair and discomfort and a sense of futility.

I emailed Jock and asked him “when you have those nights what do you do?”

He came back to me with a string of words, some of which I will share – ‘Acknowledge’; ‘Express’; ‘Support from family and friends’; ‘Best quality professional help’; ‘Pray’; ‘Be in this moment as much as possible’; ‘Meditate’; ‘Believe’.

This email from Jock created a coping platform for me throughout the rest of my treatment and recovery.

The words I haven’t included, but which have had the greatest impact were, “Change the things you can”.

As parents or leaders, managers or people coping with life we have events that just occur and others which bring issues to us. Often we dwell on the past in the hope that we can change it and yet all you and I can contribute to, is solutions for the future. We can be aware of the past, but we can’t change it; we can only influence the future.

Jock’s other words became behavioural changes for me then and remain with me now: I had cancer – I needed to acknowledge that and tell those around me.

Express – on those days of highs and lows I needed to share. Family and friends certainly helped carry the load and prayer and meditation became a meaningful part of what I do.

Having also tragically lost a son to suicide Rural Living asked Mr Barnett whether he had faith in the new Government being able to make headway in such areas and did he see a vision as to how more preventative action could be taken?

He responded: I don’t think it’s the Government’s sole role which will make a difference. I wrote this piece (see below), which has not been used elsewhere but it suggests that people need to change the way they think about mental health. To achieve this will take some leadership and champions; Government will have a role.

My son died a year ago – it was suicide so there were murmurings of mental health but nobody talked too much about that.

It’s been a year of seeing faces and shapes in the street that look like him, hearing music that remind me of him and working with family as they dealt with grief in different ways – all things that life had not prepared me for. I look back now and note that how he died, and why he died, has been dealt with differently by people, and sometimes not at all.

of the bridges that link us to the people we have loved – sometimes images, sometimes music and sometimes other people.

He talked about the music played at a wedding to reflect a special romantic moment for most present but that sometimes it is also the music played at a funeral for someone in the room; it represents a moment of sadness for them and extreme happiness for others. Bridges, but with different destinations, we thought.

My brother talked about mental health.

He said it surprised him that when a sportsperson damages a muscle in the leg, arm or shoulder, the muscle is rested, massaged or treated to bring it back to top performance again. He noted the same thing happens for those who survive a heart attack – we don’t think twice about resting or stenting or treating that muscle in a way that returns it to full strength albeit with a handful of pills that need to be taken for the rest of our lives.

Often with the heart surgery there is a scar which becomes a badge of honour, a graphic reminder of the strength and grit it takes to be confronted by a major scare and yet deal with in a way that later delivers a quality of living and life.

But, he also said, when the muscle in our head has a wiring problem or is weakened by prolonged grief or the stresses of living, we don’t talk about it and, in fact, we treat it with shame or silence.

For some reason, we don’t accept that this ‘muscle’ should be treated in the same way we treat other muscles in our body.

He suggested that people need to think about this ‘muscle’ in the same way we do other major organs in our bodies and if we did we would probably treat people with what we all refer to as ‘mental illness’, differently.

I’m glad my brother called.

To sum up we asked, if in dealing with his son’s passing and also his own traumatic illness did he ever consider retiring or resigning from your role as CEO of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce?

The measure of the man is reflected in this answer: “No. When I was sick with cancer I never believed I would die, I believed I would survive and, as a result, be a better person. So did my mother who prayed more than me and visited most Sundays and blessed me with Lourdes water. After all, what would I achieve from resigning?”

However, the next time he’s at Mission Estate in Napier, it’ll probably be he who owns this moniker, judging by his salivating on seeing this tasty little number!

goat's cheese tart with beetroot puree and caramelised walnuts Pastry ◆◆200g plain flour ◆◆100g butter ◆◆1/4 tsp salt ◆◆30-50mls water Rub butter, flour and salt together until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Gently add water to form a dough. Cover with cling film and let rest for 20 minutes.

Goat’s cheese filling ◆◆200g goat’s cheese ◆◆5 egg yolks ◆◆3 cups cream ◆◆1 zest of a lemon Add goat’s cheese, egg yolks, cream and lemon zest into a food processor and mix until smooth. Mixture should be very runny like thickened cream. Roll out pastry dough and line tart case. Blind bake pastry shell for 20 mins at 180°C. Pour goat’s cheese mixture into par baked pastry shell and bake for 30 mins at 180°C. Allow to chill at room temperature.

Beetroot puree ◆◆1 large beetroot ◆◆1 garlic clove ◆◆1 sprig thyme ◆◆3 tbs white wine vinegar

Wine match – Mission Estate Pinot Gris ◆◆1 tbs butter Place all ingredients on a large sheet of tinfoil and wrap tightly around the beetroot. Bake in the oven for 30-40 mins at 200°C. Once cooled, peel the beetroot and puree until smooth, discarding the flavouring ingredients. Season to taste.

◆◆50ml water Make a caramel by heating sugar and water in a pan. Once the caramel has reached a golden colour add walnuts and mix to coat. Spoon onto tray and cool.

Caramelised walnuts

Swipe a spoonful of beetroot puree on a plate and place tart on top. Garnish with fresh orange segments and caramelised walnuts.

Ensuring you are there for children when they need you the most, and being able to respond to their cues, will place you on the right path for this to happen.

When a child has created this partnership with you, they gain confidence to begin exploring the wider world around them. You will notice that they tend to go off on their own before returning to you for acknowledgement of what they have just discovered. The importance of responding to these discoveries is phenomenal.

When holding an interaction with a child, it is important to keep in mind the saying: ‘treat others how you want to be treated’. We need to really stop and listen to what they have to say (or not say) when they reach a certain milestone they want you to know all about. Children will thrive when they see adults responding to them with respect, encouragement and praise.

Showing compassion and care with our children will in turn teach them the skills required to do so with others around them. I can no longer count the number of times I have seen children in my care, try and console another child in a time of vulnerability. It is truly one of the most rewarding things I often witness while working alongside youngsters.

A cubby house means children will want to spend more time there. While children are still quite young, parents will spend time outside to watch, supervise and play with them. Flower power French impressionist painter, Claude Monet once said: “I must have flowers, always and always”. It’s a sentiment shared by many and by the scores of people who helped assemble November’s New Zealand Flowers Week.

As Rural Living went to print exhibitors were bringing together some 3000 petals, a multitude of decadent colours and more than 30 varieties of the country’s freshest florals in a showcase of floristry skills.

The event, first launched last year, and which ran from November 20-26 this year, celebrated locally grown flowers and highlighted the industry’s contribution to culture and the economy.

In bringing the senses alive with fragrance, vibrant colours and textures, five of New Zealand’s top florists spent two days creating and curating arrangements from bouquets, cloaks, and wall arrangements to shopping trolleys full of the season’s finest.

Those who managed to attend this week of flower power, will, no doubt, have been impressed and hopefully will also have been spurred to become more passionate than ever about local and seasonal flowers.

Summer Means Outdoor Living

y husband Craig and I have been planning an outdoor extension, and there’s a lot to think about!

We’ve been working out how best to optimise the beautiful rural view we are fortunate to enjoy. The ideal design would see a raised deck coming off our main living room. But if we raise the deck, I’ll lose sight of my lovely herb garden.

If we step the deck down gradually, my desired seating arrangement will be compromised. I can’t move the deck area due to an ornamental hedge on one side of the driveway, kitchen wall on the other and a garden path connecting the gardens.

This will be a well used outdoor living space, so it needs an outdoor fireplace and a roof structure. For lighting, we’ll have discreet LED lights inserted into the roof structure.

What type of seating we’ll end up with is still up for debate.

Craig wants easy, comfortable seating, and enough of it to accommodate a fair few guests. I want the same, but it must look appealing too.

We have some beautiful teak timber left over from a previous project, so are thinking we may use that as the decking timber.

Creating an attractive, long lasting, functional outdoor living space takes careful planning. New labour Government in – Regional Market Shows Signs of Life

By David Powell, Barfoot & Thompson, Pukekohe While the rest of New Zealand (14 regions out of 16) have seen median prices increase by 8.5% over this time last year, Auckland and Nelson regions have bucked the trend with a 3.2% and 0.9% drop respectively.

It is felt that this drop by Auckland is partly due to a large number of apartments sold in Auckland City which would skew the median price.

In contrast the Franklin ward median prices have lifted by 14.6% over same time last year. Some of this lift could be due to the lower volume of sales and the increased number of more expensive properties being sold in the lifestyle market.

This is backed up by sales in Rodney also showing positive price movement. Rodney’s October median prices are 10.1% above same time last year. Out of 13 Auckland wards, the two predominantly rural wards, Franklin and Rodney, were the only ones to show a significant median price lift.

In summary; sales volumes are down, prices are relatively stable, days to sell are taking longer and in Auckland region the number of properties available to sell increased by 17% year on year.

• Make salt dough decorations as keepsakes or great personal gifts.

what Is Your house reallY worth?

our house value depends on who’s asking: Is it the bank, a potential buyer, the local council or your insurance company?

Auckland Council’s recent revaluation has left some homeowners confused as to what their new CV actually means.

Capital value (CV) – The CV is set by local councils for the purpose of determining and allocating rates. Although the updated Auckland CV’s were released in November, the values were set at July 1, 2017, meaning they may already be out of date. The value is calculated by comparing recent sales and consented building projects. As the council does not visit every house, any added improvements, especially those not requiring consent, will not be reflected in your CV. This is one reason most houses in the Auckland region sell far in excess of the CV. Market value – this is the price you’d get if you sold your home today. Most real estate agents will provide an appraisal which is an estimate of the market value. An appraisal is not accepted by lenders for mortgages, however.

Registered valuation (RV) – this is undertaken by a registered valuer and will cost in excess of $500. They are often, but not always, required by the bank to obtain mortgage finance.

Rebuild value –for insurance purposes, also known as the “sum insured”. This is quite distinct from any measure of market value, and it does not include the value of the land. It provides an estimate of the cost to rebuild your home in the event it is destroyed in a disaster and should include an allowance for demolition and an inflationary provision. The rebuild value can be calculated by a registered valuer, but be sure to advise them the report is required for insurance purposes.

While some of the world’s best female golfers faced tough conditions during the recent McKayson NZ Women’s Golf Open in Auckland, New Zealand selector, Lisa Herbert was hard at work behind the scenes co-ordinating a large team of volunteers. HELEN PERRY talked to her about the event and Lisa’s own golf career.

olf enthusiasts turned out in their thousands to see some of the superheroes of women’s golf playing at Windross Farm, Ardmore in late September but few would have realised that on the sidelines, was arguably one of New Zealand best amateur female golfers.

Twice crowned World Left Handed Women’s Golf Champion in her younger playing days, Lisa still ranks highly among the world’s leading lefty female golfers and is well regarded in all levels of amateur golf.

Last year, she led the Auckland team to victory in the New Zealand Women’s Masters Championship claiming the coveted Russell Grace Cup although this year the team had to settle for third. On the other hand, Lisa missed the Canterbury Shield challenge (individual honours) at the same tournament by just one shot.

But there was no time to dwell on those loses; the McKayson event loomed.

“They needed volunteers so I put up my hand to co-ordinate the walker scorer volunteers. On this occasion it was a good choice because when they weather turned foul I was tucked away inside a tent rather than out on the course recording scores!”

Joking aside Lisa says the event was outstanding. “Interestingly, because Windross Farm is a links course, it probably meant the women played on longer in the bad weather than they might have on a parkland course where the number of trees 42 — Rural Living — December 2017

would have deemed it more dangerous to continue.”

Lisa acknowledges that the tournament and, in particular, Kiwi professional, Lydia Ko’s part in encouraging some of the top female players to come to New Zealand, has been a big boost for women’s golf in this country.

“It’s always hard for our women to experience that kind of competition; mostly they have to go to Australia to be tested against top players. So you can imagine how excited everyone was [about the McKayson].

“On the first day I think the organisers were totally unprepared for the masses that came out to watch; it was phenomenal. Some spectators were surprised at how exposed the course was but it can’t have much in the way of trees because of the Ardmore airfield being nearby.

“It’s a very good links course even though it’s a bit of an anomaly. Links courses are usually close to the sea and can be quite sandy. This is peat based and away from the coast.”

In addition to her co-ordinator’s role Lisa also helped out in the merchandise shop and had an opportunity to meet chairman of the naming sponsor, (global apparel brand McKayson), Min Cheol (M.C.) Kim. “Despite the weather, he was really enthusiastic about the tournament and his commitment for the next couple of years.”

I ask is it worth it for the players to come

to these far reaches. Lisa diplomatically replies: “I think it would improve the number of top players attending if the tournament was scheduled around the same time as the Australian Women’s Open in January/February. Players would be more likely to head south if they could play back to back tournaments.

As for Lisa, it’s unlikely she will be involved if the McKayson remains in Auckland. After 14 years here, she and her family are heading to greener courses in Palmerston North.

“We have previously lived in Palmy and feel the time is right to return to a less hectic lifestyle and be nearer family.

My husband, Warren, is a photographer (mainly working in real estate in Auckland) which is a business that is easily relocatable. I have a mobile coffee business which I am looking at selling with my customer run in the Manuaku/East Tamaki area and I will look for employment when we shift. A change in lifestyle and more regular working hours might mean we can both play a bit more golf!”

While having played for ManawatuWhanganui in the past Lisa says she grew up on the Kapiti Coast.

“My favourite golf course is still Paraparaumu where, guided by my golfing parents, I stated playing as a 10 year old and just took to the game.”

By the time she was in her late teens Lisa Aldridge, as she was then, was making her mark on the national scene. “I started a golf www.ruralliving.co.nz

professional traineeship in the mid 1990s with the intention of becoming a coach.

Then life took me in other directions and I didn’t complete the course.”

But, she has no regrets. “I have a fantastic husband and two amazing kids that I am enjoying watching grow into great people – nothing could be better than that.”

However, sticking with amateur golf didn’t stop this natural from proving she had what it takes to sink putts and she clearly remembers the thrill of being part of the winning Queen Sirikit Cup team when the Asia Pacific teams championship was held at Paraparaumu in 1999.

“We won in an exciting play off against Chinese Taipei; that’s still right at the top of my best golfing moments.”

Since becoming age qualified to play in the New Zealand Masters, Lisa has been part of the Auckland team on three occasions and was also delighted to lead the team’s win last year.

“I really do prefer match play and I mostly play pennants now; I find it more exciting than stroke play. It fits my game better these days as I don't have much time to practice and, therefore, I'm quite unpredictable.”

And, that’s evident in her 1.2 handicap index – a former team mate once observed: ‘the rest of us practice and play all the time; Lisa doesn’t play as much as she could but still comes out cold and makes par.” www.ruralliving.co.nz

Lisa laughs and says it depends on the course. “Paraparaumu is my favourite but I can struggle on others including Pukekohe, lovely as it is.

“As a left hander, I draw the ball left to right but a lot of courses with dog legs are designed to be right to left which is the case at Pukekohe. It’s just something I have to work on. Now that I’m older and wiser I have learnt to lower my expectations and cherish the times I do get to play. “I still want to play well, and be competitive, but I guess with having a family and other commitments – call it life balance – golf is not the ‘be all or end all’ for me.”

While content to play when and if she can, Lisah admits with the likes of Lydia Ko and also former Pakuranga player, Cecelia Cho, who now plays the Korean LPGA circuit, there is a great deal more interest in women’s golf although pay parity with men seems a long way off.

“With interest having ramped up in recent years, more girls are taking it up at a younger age and while female professionals are well paid compared to those in many codes they’re still a long way from pay parity with the men.

However, as the women’s game grows, and there is spectator demand, including for televised events, then more sponsors will come on board to gain exposure. This

could lead to more money in the prize pool.”

Despite being encouraged by the growing interest, Lisa says, “I’m a bit old fashioned when it comes to grooming young talent. “Many young women have turned professional in their mid-teens and I wonder how long it will be before they are burnt out or over their best when, in fact, they could be playing top golf up to their 30s and beyond. My advice is to work hard but be patient. In the long run, slow and steady can prove as successful as shooting to stardom at a young age.”

And, with that, it seems Auckland’s loss will be Palmerston North’s gain as Lisa says she is committed to giving something back to the game and the organisation that has done so much for her during her career.

“I’m happy to continue selecting for NZ Golf as long as they are happy for me to do the job and who knows where else the game will take me in time.” ◆◆NOTE: As Rural Living went to print it was announced that the LPGA had decided to postpone next year’s New Zealand Women’s Golf Open until early in 2019. It seems it will now be played at a time when more settled weather can be expected and also closer to the Australian Women’s Open.

Wild about Windross A few months ago only a select few had heard of Windross Farm Golf Course. Thanks to local golf superstar, Lydia Ko, the south Auckland club received international recognition when it recently hosted the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open.

ANGELA KEMP discovers how it went from farmland to world class sporting venue.

I

n 2012, the majority of Manukau Golf Club members voted for the club to move from its original Takinini site, seven minutes down the road to its new 60 ha location at Windross Farm after a $40 million land swap deal with Fletcher Residential had been negotiated.

This enabled the club, founded in 1932 and one of Auckland’s oldest, to build an architecturally significant championship course, full practice facilities and a modern clubhouse.

Windross Farm opened with a bang in September when New Zealand Golf announced the Women’s Open was to become an annual fixture on the LPGA Tour and would be hosted for the next three competitions by Windross. It was the biggest announcement in the sport in New Zealand since Tiger Woods played the national men’s open in 2002.

The field at the opening round of this year’s event has been described as attracting the largest ever opening day crowd in LPGA history with an average of 5000 spectators on each day of the competition.

Windross general manager, Antonie Els, says he expected the crowds but was blown away by their enthusiasm.

“We always expected people to support it but the surprise was the overwhelming support it received. We knew New Zealanders, and Aucklanders especially, would be passionate to see Lydia playing in her own backyard. It was a great event for Windross and the wider Auckland.”

The Women’s Open is seen as a stronger event than the men’s open largely due to Ko’s attendance. For the past four years it has been at Clearwater in Christchurch with Ko winning three times. Although, this year, she lost out to

The next Open will hopefully be played in warmer, calmer conditions.

Canadian Brooke Henderson on her home turf, her delight at being able to compete locally was clear for all to see.

“I am so excited the LPGA is being brought to my hometown, Auckland,” said Ko when the announcement was made.

“I am honoured to be the first player to sign up to play. It is going to be amazing for me and my family to host my LPGA friends in my country. I want to see golf grow in New Zealand and more women playing the game, so this news is fantastic.”

Overall, Els says he was pleased at the way the first LPGA Open went (weather excepted) and was looking forward to planning the next event.

“Operationally there are always things we want to change to make it run smoother and we have learned a lot from the first event. We would always want to strengthen the field to attract the top 10 players here but overall I think we have a solid foundation to build on for the next competition.”

Open aside, he sees a solid, sustainable future for the club not least thanks to its unique course designed by Brett Thomson

(The Hills, Clearwater, Jack’s Point) and Phil Tataurangi. Located on former arable and dairy farmland, half a million tons of clay was used to create shape and contour to provide a links style course more commonly seen at the coast.

Windross is attracting a lot of interest from Australian golfers and Els says management is hoping to tap into the overflowing Queenstown market.

“We see ourselves as a hybrid model.

We will always have members as the core to our club, they are its lifeblood. But we also recognise there is a role for us to play in driving tourism to Auckland which is why we are not just a members’ facility.

“Our café is open to the public and we have lots of people joining us for lunch, even a ladies book club.

“We are unique and different and want to be the market leaders in the way we operate the club, not just for golf but for hosting events, an area we intend to grow.

“There are a lot of golf clubs that have struggled for a long time and we hope we can show them there is a better way of utilising their facilities without affecting their membership.”

Amidst the buzz and turmoil of the Beehive’s changing of the guard, the drone known by Damien has released precious little to feed we media vultures.

So, if Rural Living is going to continue to follow the machinations of a man who has rural New Zealand in his hands, we thought we’d begin by getting to know him a little better first.

MP for West Coast Tasman, Mr O’Connor was first elected to Parliament in 1993.

Unlike the new PM, he has experience as a government minister (1999 – 2008) under the Helen Clark regime as (amongst other things) Minister of Rural Affairs.

Grown from farming roots, this wild Westie is a former regional finalist in Young Farmer of the Year.

And, he doesn’t just ‘coast’ along; an active sportsman, he enjoys skiing, white-water rafting, jet boating and even plays rugby for the parliamentary team. After all that, one has to wonder how on earth he has sufficient time or energy left for the ‘sport’ of politics!

Mr O’Connor’s ‘number one priority as Minister’, is yet to be revealed, through ministerial releases anyway.

But, if he’s anything like the Guy whose place he’s taken, we’re sure we’ll be told... over and over again.

Rural Living’s favourite ‘Westie’ headed North on ‘trade’ winds recently.

As Associate Trade and Export Growth Minister, Mr O’Connor hopes to shore up agreements which could prove a boon for exports, including those from New Zealand’s primary industries.

“RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) is important for New Zealand. If [successful], the agreement would cover 56 percent, or NZ$40 billion, of New Zealand’s total goods and services exports and seven out of our top 10 export markets,” he said.

The RCEP negotiations include representatives from 16 countries, including Australia, China, India, Japan and South Korea.

While most everybody’s heard about the Forest & Bird, Archey’s frog is less often seen in the limelight.

However, this (and other) endangered species may well benefit from a last minute call from the Government, staving off a possible ‘execution’.

“Ecological experts have agreed that more mining [on the West Coast’s Denniston Plateau] will likely drive some of the rare species that live there to extinction,” Forest & Bird chief executive, Kevin Hague, says.

“This also has big implications for conservation land in the Coromandel, where companies have been prospecting for gold, including in the habitat of the critically endangered Archey’s frog.”

Not to be confused with Hector’s Dolphin, or Jessica’s Rabbit for that matter, Archey’s frog (or frogs – they’re not that rare!) is named after former director of the Auckland Institute, Sir Gilbert Archey.

Sir Gilbert would undoubtedly be pleased to know that, as a result of a commitment by the Government to block new mining on conservation land, his little namesake could be saved.

“We are delighted that the Government recognises that protected conservation land means just that. It’s protected,” Mr Hague says. “And, of course, all coal mining contributes to climate disruption, so we will be continuing to oppose new coal mining in other areas.”
