Big stink at Formosa

mbattled golf resort Formosa, in Pine Harbour, has been in the news in the past year over accusations raw sewage has been pumped out of on-site septic tanks and disposed of in a stream that flows to the ocean.

The company was served with an abatement notice by Auckland Council on January 31 this year, concerning the toxic effluent-filled wastewater.

An investigation launched by Auckland Council’s Regulatory Compliance unit, has recently finished.

The Times approached council for an update and received the following from senior media special-

ist Anna Kellett. “The investigation has been concluded and we are currently collating and analysing the evidence. We hope to have an update in the near future.”

Aside from the effluent issues, the embattled owners are also dealing with lease-related grievances from a catering company that took out a 20-year option to operate Formosa’s restaurant. It is understood the lease was terminated by the resort owners 110 Formosa (NZ) Limited, as a result of the restaurant receiving an insanitary building notice from Auckland Council on June 7, 2019 and being subsequently shut down for three months.

In an ongoing legal stoush, the restaurateurs are arguing they are owed compensation by 110 Formosa (NZ) Ltd due to the early lease termination. Their argument is based upon the fact they were unable to trade due to the council shutdown and have lost thousands in revenue.

They also state all rent was paid up despite not being able to open.

Seeking clarification, The Times has made inquiries with 110 Formosa’s spokesperson Graham Chin but he had not responded by publication time.

On a recent visit however, the Times observed, in parts, a facility that resembled a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Rusty, wheel-less golf carts are lined up in a disused carpark, the grounds remain unkempt, buildings appear in need of maintenance work and the once trendy villas are in various states of disrepair.

Even the Formosa Golf Resort entry signage, once resplendent in gold lettering, has been replaced by a cheap-looking alternative.

The golf course remains open, as does an on-site fitness club.

The resort currently holds a twostar customer review rating on its Facebook page, and three-and-a -half stars on Tripadvisor.

Supernatural justice to prevail in statue theft Jim BIRCHALL

I

n a brazen act, a heavy statue has been stolen from the front porch of an elderly resident in Kilkenny Drive Botany. And now she intends to summon a ghost to teach the person a lesson.

Maree Harman’s mother-in-law (who didn’t want to be named) is angry and upset that someone would enter her property at night and walk as far as the front porch to spirit away a statue.

Maree describes her motherin-law as a strong-willed, independent lady in her eighties, who would definitely confront a trespasser.

The statue was of no real commercial value, but held significant sentimental value, said Maree.

BY JIM BIRCHALL Beachlands local Steve Lucas is on-board the Endeavour replica as it navigates its way around New Zealand as part of the TUIA250 commemorations.

Steve joined the ship in Gisborne for the 15-day stretch to Auckland.

The ship stopped for Powhiri’s in Tolaga Bay, Mercury Bay, Umupuia and in Auckland over Labour weekend.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, as the ship weathered a big storm off East Cape with winds gusting up to 70 knots. Crisis was averted by the “professional crew of around 15, and around 25 voyage crew” says Steve, and added that the crew all mucked in onboard; “We have been fully involved in helming, sail handling, climbing the rigging to furl and reef sails and keeping lookout. We work under the supervision of the professional crew providing the required manpower”

When asked if the ship made famous by the first pacific voyage of Captain James Cook in 1769 is difficult to sail, Steve outlined the limitations when compared with modern ships.

“The Endeavour cannot sail to windward like a modern yacht and with the very flat bow - it’s like pushing a sea wall through the sea- on the helm, it’s hard work maintaining course”.

Modern conveniences can be implemented if need dictates, as Steve says, “It does have engines but all the sailing is using the traditional methods to make sail and manipulate the 2.5 tonne anchor using the capstan. When tacking or gybing, it takes a lot of manpower and co-ordination to move the sails as required”.

The ship left for Whangarei and Bay of Islands on Tuesday and then rounds Cape Reinga before ticking up the nautical miles on a long trek to Picton to continue the Tuia250.

Police Minister has let us down T he Government has overseen a rapid increase in the number of people joining gangs since it took office, but it’s no closer to achieving its promise of 1800 extra police on the beat.

The Prime Minister promised New Zealanders her Government would deliver 1800 additional police officers to the force. That is additional recruitment, accounting for police officers who leave each year.

With gang membership on the rise and serious crime increasing, having these extra cops in our community is incredibly important.

But after two years, the Government has only managed to add 716.

Knowing they can’t meet this target, the Government has now shifted the goal post.

Now, Stuart Nash is simply counting every person who has been through the police college and ignoring the many hundreds of experienced police officers who have resigned over the past two years.

This is yet another broken promise to New Zealanders. The problem comes down to the Government - it doesn’t have a plan when it comes to law and order.

Some of these destinations are remote destinations all over the world – producing unforgettable tales and awesome photos. Obtaining good travel advice is a part of the preparation for adventures to any destination. Ideally visiting your doctor for a pre-travel visit 4-6 weeks before you intend travelling is best.

The doctor you visit needs to know about your illnesses and any medications you are taking, as these influence medical decisions. Your doctor can provide a physical examination and assess your fitness for travel – particularly for seniors. If you have heart disease you might choose a less strenuous travel itinerary. A travel health kit should all be considered and documented at a travel health consultation.

You will need information about your travel destination particularly about altitude and climate as these can affect your health as you age and the destination’s risk of natural disasters.

Make sure you are up to date with routine Vaccination such as Tetanus, Flu and Measles/ Mumps and Rubella (MMR).

Yellow Fever vaccine should be given cautiously to people over 60 years and it should not be given to people who are immune suppressed.

Is KiwiSpend the answer in retirement?

A

drip-feed income scheme called KiwiSpend could kick in when KiwiSaver members turn 65, helping them stretch their savings through what could be a long retirement.

This is one suggestion up for discussion in the three-yearly Review of Retirement Income Policies, being undertaken by Interim Retirement Commissioner Peter Cordtz.

It comes from a report on decumulation prepared for the Review team by Susan St John and Claire Dale of Auckland University’s Retirement Policy and Research Centre.

Among the Review’s terms of reference, the government asked Cordtz and his team at the Commission for Financial Capability to look at whether New Zealanders needed help stretching their savings through retirement and what role the government could play.

A little known clause in some retirement village contracts can leave license-holders liable for a capital loss on their unit when they leave it.

If the license-holder has died, their family may have to cover the capital loss out of the deceased estate.

In a Facebook Live question and answer session run by the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) on March 19, the CFFC’s National Manager of Retirement Villages, Troy Churton, said that the use of the clause could be under-estimated when a family member was signing a license to occupy a retirement village unit.

“Most New Zealanders are aware that they will not make any capital gain on the unit during their time in a village, but some occupation right agreements contain a capital loss clause that says that if the resident’s village unit value declined, the resident may be exposed to having to contribute to the village operator’s loss when they exit.”

www.times.co.nz Churton said that a survey of village operators by the Retirement Villages Association about a year ago showed operators had mixed views on whether the clause would be actioned. “Some didn’t have a capital loss clause, others said if they had one they probably wouldn’t exercise it, and some said we do have it and if we need it we would exercise it.”

Churton, who travels the country giving free public seminars for people thinking of moving into a retirement village, says some potential residents view this as a “hot issue”. “They say that on one hand I’m not getting any capital gain and on the other I could be financially liable for the operator’s losses.”

The CFFC, which performs a monitoring role of the retirement village industry on behalf of the government, advises people of the requirement to gain legal advice before signing a village contract and recommends they seek financial advice as well. “The family of an older person need to know this stuff, as much as the older person themselves,” says Churton.

“A lot of older folk are entering a village in a situation of vulnerability and to think an older person will grasp all the little fish-hooks and implications of a complex contract is a big ask.

alling mortgage interest rates helped stabilise inflation for highest-spending households, while rising council rates have hit superannuitants the hardest, Stats NZ said this month.

Each quarter, the household living-costs price indexes calculate how inflation affects 13 different groups, while the consumers price index calculates how inflation affects New Zealanders as a whole.

In the September 2019 quarter, highest-spending households faced the lowest quarterly inflation of 0.4 per cent, compared with 0.7 per cent for all households.

A fall in mortgage interest payments in the September 2019 quarter helped offset rising local authority rates for the highest spenders.

“Mortgage interest rates dropped this quarter, influenced by a cut in the Official Cash Rate,” consumer prices manager Sarah Johnson said.

“Highest-spending households benefited the most from the drop in interest rates. Mortgage interest payments make up

about one dollar in every ten of this household group’s spending,” Johnson said.

As an indication of how much interest rates are falling, spending on mortgage interest payments by all household types fell 2.7 per cent from the June 2019 to September 2019 quarters, and decreased 6.2 per cent compared with a year ago.

The rate of annual inflation faced by the highest-spending households has been slowing down since September 2018, when it was 1.9 per cent for the year.

“In the year to September 2019, inflation for the highest-spending households was 0.7 per cent, about half the rate faced by all households,” Johnson said.

“Annual inflation for the highest-spending households has been consistently the lowest of any household group for the past three years.”

Rates and rents hit all households Housing costs, especially local authority rates and

rents, were key drivers for inflation for all households in the September 2019 quarter.

Across all household types, local authority rates and payments rose around 5 per cent in the September 2019 quarter.

“More superannuitants tend to own their own homes, so this group is most affected by higher council rates than other groups who are more likely to rent,” Johnson said.

In the September 2019 quarter, inflation for superannuitants rose 1 per cent.

While higher rates affected homeowners, rent rises affected beneficiaries the most, as this group tends to spend more of their money on rents than other households.

In the September 2019 quarter, rents rose 0.9 per cent for beneficiaries.

Higher rents also affected the lowest-spending households and Maori households, two groups which are more likely to rent housing.

Overall inflation for beneficiaries in the September 2019 quarter was up 0.6 per cent.

Being smart about connecting with iPhones

hile most seniors would love to embracetechnology, many struggle to connect with their iPhones.

Aman Varma, a former Pakuranga College student, understands that it is not unusual for kids his age to be technology junkies–even as there exists a yawning gap between an iPhone generation and seniors trying to cope with fast-paced technology to keep up with their grandchildren and the rest of world.

Wanting to help, the computer science major at the University of Auckland has been working on an iPhone guide for the last four years.

The iGuide comes with step-by-step instructions and screenshots designed to help the elderly build confidence to use iPhone.

In 2015, the Times published an article on Aman with a group of students taking second place in the regional finals of the Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme.

published in the Times the young business enterprise group received a number of queries from individuals and retirement villages showing a keen interest in the guide.

“We found a real disconnect between seniors and technology and decided to create viable solutions for this problem,” says Aman.

“After I finished college, I decided to continue writing the book with the hope that someday senior

citizens will benefit out of it.

“I checked with my team mates if they were ok with me taking the project to the next level and they were fine it.”

The iGuide is designed with the goal of empowering senior citizens by helping them confidently utilise their iPhones. It covers 10 essential iPhone apps including settings, contacts, messages, phone, mail (email), Safari (internet), and how to use the camera, sharing photos and making an album, using the App Store to download apps and more.

Aman, who has invested a lot into the book, says it has been a huge learning curve in terms of the business aspect of publishing.

The role of an attorney is similar to that of a trustee in that the person giving you the power of attorney (donor) is placing trust in you that you will act in their best interest.

Beach protection unites politicians K

een observers of New Zealand politics may know how unusual it is for an opposition Member of Parliament to work on a policy matter with a Government Minister.

But Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says he’s bucking the trend in the best interest of his local community.

Ross is working with Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash to find a way to protect Cockle Bay Beach’s shellfish from over-harvesting.

And Nash recently publicly confirmed their working relationship.

Nash told Newstalk ZB he’s “been doing a little bit of work with Jami-Lee Ross in Botany” relating to the Minister’s Fisher-

ies portfolio.

“He’s advocating very hard for Cockle Bay,” Nash said of Ross.

Ross says he welcomes the public comments from Nash and that he’s been working with the Fisheries Minister this year to find a way to protect Cockle Bay Beach from over-harvesting.

“This is a serious issue for our local community and it needs to be addressed,” he says.

“Being an Independent MP enables me to work with Governments of all stripes in the best interest of Botany.

“Working with the Minister has led to him arranging for his officials to meet directly with local residents about over-harvesting at Cockle Bay Beach.”

Ross has launched an online

petition at www.ProtectCockleBay.nz that calls for the Government to close the beach to harvesting for at least five years so its shellfish population can recover.

The petition is gaining considerable support from the community, he says.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to work with Minister Nash to prevent a potential ecological crisis at Cockle Bay Beach.”

Ross says his work with Nash and other Government Ministers is not part of a formal arrangement.

“I’m demonstrating that, as an MP who sits in the middle of the two major parties, I’m able to work with either side to get the job done for Botany.”

This issue of euthanasia

I have to admit that I am thoroughly confused by this Government which is working to reduce suicide numbers in New Zealand with a ‘prevention plan’, as figures show suicide in NZ is now at the highest level.

However, on the other hand, this Government is pushing for euthanasia – which is assisted suicide – to be legalised!

This Government is wanting to convince people that they care, yet they are in a way saying to the unwell that there is no hope for them and they are better off dead! What hypocrisy!

Generally, people choose to end it all because they are in agonising pain and can’t see any hope or future for themselves.

Any human being, young or old, in sickness or in health, is precious and valuable to the people who love them, so how can this Government define who needs suicide prevention help and who needs approved euthanasia?

Just because euthanasia is legalised in other countries doesn’t mean NZ has to be like them! Show the world that NZ is different – that we value people more than anything and that we don’t give up!

Work on showing love to those who need affirmation and help; encourage those who need to see hope and a future; show care, compassion and concern to those who are in pain and we can erase those words ‘suicide’ and ‘euthanasia’ off our list.

Like many semi-rural roads, Point View Drive has in recent years become a dumping ground.

Household rubbish and large quantities of garden waste are regularly dumped along the verge of our street.

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be incredibly scary and stressful for animals. As we head into Guy Fawkes night, here are some tips to make sure your furry friends are safe: • If possible, stay home - they’ll be less stressed with company.

• Walk dogs before the fireworks start - this will help tire them out and hopefully put them to sleep.

• ALWAYS keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.

• Close all windows and doors, block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and keeping noise to a minimum.

• Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on.

• If dogs start to look stressed, remain calm yourself remembering that as “pack leader” your dog looks for guidance from you.

• If you have small pets that live outdoors, don’t forget to partly cover cages / pens and aviaries with blankets for sound proofing.

• Take special care of elderly or nervous animals – speak to your veterinarian before Guy Fawkes about whether calming medication would be suitable.

• Make sure your pet is microchipped, or has a collar on with up to date contact details in case they are panicked by the fireworks and escape.

owick Softball Club is an institution in east Auckland. Many people will have a family connection to the club which was formed in 1973, with the objective of providing softball and tee-ball to the local community. Boasting upwards of 400 players spread across 30-odd teams, coupled with a total membership approaching 900, the club is the biggest in Auckland, and one of the largest in New Zealand.

The club, located at Meadowlands Reserve is well appointed with five senior diamonds (including two skin-diamonds) plus a junior diamond, and is an integral part of the greater Meadowlands Multi sport facility, shared with Cockle Bay Tennis and Howick squash.

Run by manager Barb Croawell, the club and its fields is available for hire, and even houses a children’s play group on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

English thorns mortally wound All Blacks Agnew’s Angle

Having predicted in last week’s column that the English rose’s thorns could wound New Zealand in their Rugby World Cup Yokohama semi-final, I had hoped they wouldn’t be fatal.

Sadly they were. Full praise, however, for the majestic calibre of the conquerors 19-7 triumph in beating our blokes at their own game.

Playing for third against Warren Gatland’s Six Nations champions Wales this coming Friday wasn’t the farewell head coach Steve Hansen and captain Kieran Read had hoped for. But no-one could doubt England’s superiority from their V for victory formation that met the haka to the final whistle.

Despite the gnawing pain, the All Blacks were gracious in acknowledging the better team won on the day.

Although Manu Tuilagi’s storming try from the outset wasn’t a knockout blow, the All Blacks were never allowed to recover from it as the English maintained pace and pressure that is normally New Zealand’s domain.

England’s scrum was stronger, as was the lineout dominated by Maro Itoje and Courtney Lawes against the combined effort of Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock, Read and Scott Barrett.

Consequently Hansen conceded he had erred in playing the taller Barrett ahead of regular No 7 Sam Cane in the first half when the magnificent Itoje helped lively flankers Sam Underhill and Tom Curry easily win the breakdown battle.

With halfback Aaron Smith deprived of quick ball, there was little space for Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett to work their magic against a ➤➤Turn to Page 27 relentless, hard-hitting defence.

Sandown calling for Andre Heimgartner F

ollowing a difficult weekend at the Vodafone Gold Coast 600, Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner is hoping next month’s final round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup – the Sandown 500 – will yield better results for his #7 Plus Fitness Kelly Racing Nissan Altima.

The weekend on the streets of Surfers Paradise got off to a good start for the Melbournebased Kiwi, with Heimgartner making his way into his first Gold Coast Top Ten Shootout and the second of his career to start Saturday’s race from the fourth row on the grid.

Saturday’s race was initially looking like a strong outing for Heimgartner and his co-driver Bryce Fullwood with the pairing well inside the top 10 across the majority of the race and as high as sixth during the 102 lap race before disaster struck just laps from the finish.

really there isn’t much else to say about it. Come Sunday we wanted to put it behind us and try and salvage a decent result but unfortunately we got caught up in someone else’s incident in what turned out to be some real lap one carnage.

“Bryce did a great job to get the car through where a lot of others did not, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to escape completely unscathed and that left us with a damaged front end and behind the eight ball for the rest of the race.

“Bryce and I and the entire team I think are looking forward to heading to Sandown in a couple of weeks’ time where hopefully we can put this one behind us and have a better weekend.”

Heimgartner and Kelly Racing will next be on-track in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 – the final round of the 2019 PIRTEK Enduro Cup – which will be held at Sandown Raceway across November 8-10.
