owick Local Board is once again shining a light on Christmas with the switching on of the festive lights on the tree at Stockade Hill on Friday night. In what has become an annual tradition as part of the Midnight Madness event, the lights on the tree and down the main street will be turned on signalling to all the little ones that Christmas is just around the corner. The lights are due to be
turned on 8.30pm at Stockade Hill. The Rotunda in the main street will be lit up as well as the motif light displays on the street poles again this year adding a lovely ambience to the village. Thanks again to Howick Village Optometrists, HelloWorld, 101 Design and Marie Raos and Family for kindly sponsoring the lighting of the four main trees in the village.

It’s that time of the year again M
idnight Madness in Howick Village is nearly here – Friday November 22. The Village will once again be alive with entertainment and activities for our annual preChristmas shopping extravaganza. This event runs from 9am on Friday November 22 and continues through the evening until midnight as a family and community occasion. Midnight Madness has grown exponentially over the past 26 years and requires road closures to host the 30,000+ people who come to enjoy some wonderful pre-Christmas shopping bargains, music, entertainment and the general vibe that the event offers. This is your chance to get a head start on your Christmas shopping and enjoy the excitement that only Midnight Madness can offer. As well as our superb retail stores, cafes and restaurants, our iconic markets will be open from 6pm, hosting a full contingent of stalls, street food ven-
dors, artisan foods, produce and an extensive array of arts and crafts. There is something for everyone! A number of special guests will be mingling with the crowd and available for photo opportunities. A new addition to our entertainment line up this year, is our Silent Disco and a Kid’s Zone. Both should be crowd-pleasers, especially among our younger community. Bring the children to enjoy our new Kombi train ride and have a go on the popular animal cycles! Look out for our fabulous prize packages in our Shop and Win promotion that starts on November 22 – including a wonderful two-night stay for four people at Riverside Matakana and a fishing charter on the Hauraki Gulf for four people. Cats go missing in Farm Cove By JIM BIRCHALL
C
ould the disappearance of a number of cats from the Farm Cove area be the work of an individual operating with nefarious intent? The Times has been approached by a local resident, whose cat went missing in late 2018, and been supplied information about six other felines that have apparently gone missing and never returned over the past two years. The usual evidence of an animal meeting its end via being run over or similar failed to materialise and the felines appear to have just vanished into thin air. The Times has also been supplied with disturbing photos of a drowned long-haired cat
which was found in the Farm Cove estuary. The resident explained that she had personally known of three cats to have met the same fate, in the same stretch of water adjacent to the Rotary Walkway. A theory was advanced that perhaps the cats had drowned as a result of misadventure, but given cats aversion to water and the repeated cases, this is may be drawing a long bow. The SPCA was approached to supply statistics on missing cats in the area and the Times hoped to correlate the data and look for patterns to add credence to the speculation. Communications manager Jessie Gilchrist had this to say: “We don’t have a database specifically for missing animals. For cats, I suggest people get in touch with lostpet.co.nz
– this service is provided by the NZ Companion Animal Council and is an online noticeboard form for missing pets. SPCA uses this service too.” According to wikivet, cats predominantly venture only within their home range of about 1-2 kilometres from residence, and to travel away from a well-pawed track is behaviour more commonly seen in dogs. The case of the missing moggies draws unfortunate parallels with the Croydon catkiller, an alleged decapitator who was said to roam south west London from 2015-2018. The Metropolitan police took the allegations seriously enough that a dedicated taskforce was established to apprehend the cat ripper. More than 2000 man-hours were tied up with the investigation, before ultimately concluding

that the mutilations had not been carried out by a human, and were likely caused by wildlife predation or scavenging on cats killed in vehicle collisions, The evidence was also dismissed by crime academics who cited the growing hysteria as an example of moral panic. Trade Me co-founder and philanthropist Gareth Morgan has a particular disdain for the humble household cat, arguing they should be eradicated in order to re-establish native bird populations decimated by feline predation. Could an individual with an axe to grind be responsible, or is it simply a sad case of beloved pets meeting an unfortunate end? ■■ www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/ what-to-do-when-you-lost-your-pet

Toastmasters organisation members Devi Subramaniam and Deborah Geisler were on hand to judge the speeches. with Rotary’s Youth Committee director Rob Mouncey. It commemorates former long serving Rotarian and past President Brian Hanlon’s contribution to the community and to education.

Rotary President Mike Abercrombie said: “The contest is one of the highlights of the Rotary year particularly in relation to the many youth support projects that the club undertakes and it is really pleasing to see the confidence that these young people demonstrated in presenting their speeches”. The awards for the night included gift vouchers from Paper Plus in Howick with the winner also receiving the Brian Hanlon Trophy. Katie Treneman, owner of Paper Plus, said: “She was really happy to support Rotary in their efforts to encourage the development of young people in the community.” Considering joining? This decision has been made based on a combination of factors security, standards and resources, she said. “Already in the short time the tent has been in place it has been broken into and the Trust are concerned that, despite the security arrangements, the display
will be vulnerable to vandalism,” said Newbury. “The Trust are not confident that the standard of the display from previous years can be guaranteed and do not wish to provide a substandard display.” She said it had also become apparent that the group of
volunteers the Trust had been able to tap into for previous years had dwindled. “The demands on those few that can be mustered would be beyond what should be expected,” she said. “The Trust is disappointed to make this decision at the 11th hour but the pressure to
have the display in place for Midnight Madness was too great, and having the space free for alternative uses, was more important.” The HVA is working on arrangements to have a Santa grotto included in Midnight Madness 2019 planning.

Safe Store blaze wipes out sizable antique collection
Sculpture vandalised: Third time unlucky for Kid Justice By JIM BIRCHALL Divisive artwork Kid Justice, located on a plinth in Crawford Reserve, Howick, has been vandalised - again. The Times visited on Monday and noticed the $55,000 sculpture by artist Erin Forsyth had been vandalised for the third time. A foot was damaged in March, and the left arm removed in August. The current attack is the third on the suffrage-marking statue since it’s unveiling in December. Auckland Council has been approached for comment.

News bites Lotto win in Botany Two Lotto players from Auckland toasted a special win after each taking home $500,000 with Lotto First Division in last night’s Lotto draw. The winning tickets were sold at Onehunga Mall Superette and New World Botany. Powerball was not struck and rolls over to Saturday night, where the jackpot will be $14 million.
Meanwhile, Strike Four was also won last night by a player from Auckland, who took home $400,000. The winning Strike ticket was sold at Countdown Three Kings.
fire in the early hours of Monday at Safe Store Storage Pakuranga in Harris Rd, East Tamaki left a local businessman’s antique collection decimated. Ted Waters, owner of the popular Apothecary restaurant in Howick, heard about the flames engulfing the facility from his wife who saw the fire on the news. Waters estimates his loss at about $70,000. He believes the incident is starting to look more like arson, and he has been asked by police to provide an impact statement. According to a Fire & Emergency Northern Communications spokesperson, 15 pumps were employed at the height of the blaze, helped by aerial support and a command unit. By Monday afternoon, one appliance remained at the scene turning over debris and containing hotspots. Two fire investigators were on site conducting inquiries as to the fire’s origin. Their investigation is on-going. Police also attended the scene, largely for traffic control purposes. Ted Waters’ storage shed full of antiques was mostly destroyed by fire. Photo supplied

Camp. “Many of you will remember the penny for post, penny for health through the sale of health stamps. Unfortunately, letter writing is a past art and we no longer receive funds though post.” Talking to the Times, Pene looked back at the time when children were at the health camp mainly due to health reasons asthma, bad eyesight, diabetes, scabies or hair lice. “But now they are here due to trauma caused by emotional, physical or sexual abuse,” she said. “Children come from harmful relationships and there is a big impact of drugs, violence and disruption to family life. Sometimes a child has been witness to the dad banging the mum’s head against a wall and there are memories that won’t go away. They’ve seen their sibling end their life and it’s important to make them understand that it is not their fault. Children are emotionally, mentally and sexually scarred and it takes a much longer time to heal,” she observed. “Sadly, children are not children anymore as there is so
much pornography and violence in the media and the ability to access violence in the name of entertainment. At Stand they not only work with children but also with families. Stand also runs the grief and loss programme called Seasons for grown-ups. “We do parenting since the child will go back to the same family environment and sometimes parents have their own trauma history that they carry into their parenting,” pointed out Pene. “Right from the first moment they engage with our social workers, they are treated with kindness. Children are in a safe space and we teach them how to make safe choices. “Most children are there for a span of five weeks and then ready to make a transition. Sometimes it may take up to two years to make a difference but the stay at the village is not at one stretch. They can come back after a while. “Our children are our treasures, and at the end of the day if our relationship has made a difference in their lives, we have all achieved greatness.”

Celebrating the centenary of Stand Children’s Services at the Children’s Village at Half Moon Bay were members of local service organisations including Freemasons, Probus, Rotary and Zonta who have supported Stand over the years Over 10 decades Stand, formerly known as the Children’s Health Camp, has transformed lives of children from 7-11 who are at significant risk of harm as a consequence of the environment in which they are being raised. Pene Frost, regional manager Pou Toko who has been with the charity for over 40 years, is an institution in her own right. She expressed her gratitude to therapeutic staff, cooks, leadership team, volunteers, coaches and tireless doctors on the occasion. “It is 100 years of collective service to the community and I’d like to thank everyone for their kindness,” she said. “One hundred years ago in Turakina, in the middle of a farmer’s paddock, under the shelter of army tents, 55 children experienced the very first Children’s Health Camp. It was not until 1937 that the move was made to establish permanent camps across New Zealand,” she said. The current facility was built in 2004 from the profits of the sale of 17 acres of land that was occupied by the old Health

The recent New Zealand Wushu (martial arts) champs at St Johns had a silver lining for Whitford local Bronte Coluccio. She picked up three silver medals across the Taolu discipline which encompasses staff, broadsword and bare hand fighting styles. The win was just another achievement for the talented 26-year-old, who only took up Wushu (Kung Fu) 18 months ago, and spent six months of that, injured. She is also an experienced aerobics coach, spending 20 hours per week training local youngsters to international competition level. Delivering parkand-ride in Botany I
hear all the time from people that they want to see better roads and public transport. I couldn’t agree more. Our local community, like the rest of Auckland, has unfortunately suffered from a chronic under-investment in public transport infrastructure in the past. We are finally seeing construction on the Eastern Busway taking shape and plans for the Botany to Airport Rapid Transit solution along Te Irirangi Drive are also coming along. It can take more than an hour to drive from Botany to downtown Auckland during rush hour and the same amount of time coming back. When complete, the Eastern Busway will see travel from Botany to Britomart cut to less than 40 minutes. Our Botany to Airport plans will see the southern parts of
Botany connected with a rapid transit solution to the employment growth precincts of Manukau and the Airport. The key to getting people out of cars and onto new infrastructure is going to be making it easier for them to get to the future Botany Station. That’s where our future parkand-ride building at Botany comes in. I’ve been pushing the Transport Minister and Auckland Transport this year to work on providing a park-and-ride in Botany as part of the two transport projects. The Minister has now instructed his officials working on the Botany to Airport project to investigate park-and-ride as part of this work. My vision for a park-and-ride facility would see a ground level bus interchange, first floor parking for shoppers and then several
MP for Botany
Jami-Lee Ross floors of parking for public transport users. The cost of building this facility will be partially offset by putting an appropriate commercial or residential development at the top. The existing parking in Botany is privately owned and limited. People who use these two public transport services deserve somewhere safe and accessible to park their vehicles. Locals want better public transport and they want it to be easy to use. It is possible to reduce congestion by getting cars off the road, deliver faster public transport, and provide a safe place to park. Park-and-ride is a critical piece of this puzzle.
Speeding drivers upset quiet community Almost 90 per cent of respondents to a public survey say they’re concerned about the danger speeding motorists pose to their east Auckland community. These are among the findings of a survey sent to Huntington Park residents by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who says he’s heard from numerous locals about issues related to unsafe driving. Ross recently wrote to people living in Huntington Park and asked for their views on whether there’s a safety problem in the area caused by speeding and unsafe driving. He also asked if residents wanted the Howick Local Board to investigate options to slow cars down. Almost 90 of respondents answered yes to that question. Huntington Park Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Brian Brown says he often sees cars speeding through the area. Something needs to be done to address the problem before someone is hurt in a crash, he says. “It’s especially bad in the late afternoons. If you drive at 60km/h on Huntington Drive, it seems very fast.” Ross says his survey was prompted by the many locals who raised concerns with him about motorists using Huntington Drive as a “rat run”, or cut-through, between Dannemora and East Tamaki. “There’s a large number of families and senior citizens living in that area so it’s important to ensure our local roads are safe to use,” he says. “The new Howick Local Board has more than $7 million of ratepayer funding available for local transport works and road safety improvements. “I’m writing to the Board with the results of this survey to inform its members about the views local residents have about speeding vehicles.”

Alpacas up against it facing Papatoetoe XI By JIM ALLNATT What started out as a very promising day for the Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men finished with the home side on the back foot at Lloyd Elsmore. Dismissing the visitors for 144 in their first innings, thanks to Rudi Botadra starring with 4/21 off 13 overs and being well backed up by Donovan Grobbelaar’s 2/35, Matt Blandford’s 2/32 and Taine Jolley’s 2/31. In reply, The Alpacas made a solid start in its run chase with an opening partnership of 36 between Bill Walsh and Dan Young. but the next six wickets fell for only an additional 38 runs and Howick are in dire straits at 74/7, still with 71 runs to make to achieve a first innings lead. Papatoetoe’s bowlers kept a very tight length and the fielders were right on the mark. H. Vyas stood out with 4/15 off 17 overs, well supported by L. Instead who has taken 2/24 off 17. Both sides have it all to play for as an outright victory for either team looms.

What about the debt?
After reading the booklet sent to voters for the current council elections, I am not impressed with the presentations that many of the candidates have written. It is not helpful for a voter to make sense of exactly what contribution a candidate can make to receive a relatively large sum of public money. Their personal details include items (like) what they would like to see such as lower rates or, in the case of current members, useless trivia. It would have been helpful to voters if current members, the two councillors and the local board had contributed articles to the local newspapers if only to show that they were earning their large sums of public money. One of the Howick councillors, and at least two members of the local board, have been serving for multiple terms. It would have been helpful if they had stepped down after and encouraged young people to stand for Howick. There should be a limit of two terms when standing for council and the local board. Multiple terms only provide a candidate with a secure and regular income of pocket money. Auckland Council has a huge debt. Not on candidate has mentioned this debt and attempted to offer what should be done to check this amount or censure the mayor for the lack of discussions. Annual salaries for elected members: Councillors $111,000; Local Board $48,000.

Roadworks in residential areas It seems that Auckland Transport and Council are happy to set rules for everyone else but waiver them when it suits them. We are up in Pakuranga Heights on a normally quiet little street with the only drama of late being a chap who was attacked with a hammer. I intervened just in time and, after the guy got out of hospital, he told us that if he had been hit once more that it was quite likely he would have died. On Monday, November 4 at 7pm, and without notice, the road was blocked off and roadworks commenced. About 11pm the whole house started to shake in what honestly felt like an earthquake. If it was not for the noise of beeping horns and reversing alarms, I would have thought I was living in Christchurch. Apparently we were supposed to have received a letter informing us of the roadworks and neither myself nor the flat next door received a notice. I contacted council and lodged a noise complaint. Initially they informed me that there was no consent on record, calls were made and apparently a partial consent came up. Nonetheless, surely conducting extensive road resurfacing in a residential area when people are trying to sleep is a totally dumb idea. The works could have been conducted during the day with minimal interruption. Noise control arrived and were given the Fulton and Hogan works order and told there was a consent. But still no one was able to provide the actual council consent. The contractor was a bit of a smarmy fellow and kept

repeating, “We have a job to do, how would you like it if I interupted your job?” Well, my friend, my wife has to be up at 5:30am to go to her job and you are keeping her awake so, in a way, you are interrupting our work. The police were called, probably as a result of me climbing on the back of the unit in protest and telling them to shut the unit down. At this point after being lied to by their supervisor and hearing the trucks pull up beeping their horns, enough was enough. Discussions were had and eventually works recommenced. Now here is the surprising part. They laid the last stretch of the road in less time than it took them to lay a smaller area. Well it is 2am and the horns and reversing alarms are still going on. The house, thankfully, is not shaking any more. Looks like we are going to end up having to take sick days tomorrow as a result of no sleep. Nice to know that some people are getting paid for disturbing the peace.

Climate science is perhaps the most scrutinised science in history. Nowadays some 70,000 experts work in the field, says a reader. Stock image
Too much evidence to be a climate denier The essence of science is evidence and explanation. The theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is a comprehensive and coherent explanation of the observed phenomena rapidly rising surface and ocean temperatures, dramatic loss of ice - based on many lines of evidence.
There is nothing new about the basic idea. In 1824 Fourier realised Earth was warmer than he expected. Based on its distance from the sun, it should be -18C. He surmised this was due to a property of the atmosphere - what we now call the greenhouse effect. We now know it is 33C warmer, at 15C. In 1856 Eunice Foote demonstrated carbon dioxide trapped sunlight; CO2 is what we now call a greenhouse gas. In 1859 John Tyndall demonstrated changes in concentration of CO2 could bring climate change and in 1896 Svante Arrhenius calculated the temperature for a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere. That’s just a brief introduction to climate science in the 1800s. I won’t try to outline the wealth of science done in the 1900s, except to say the oil company scientists knew in the 1960s their product was causing global warming. Climate science is perhaps the most scrutinised science in history. Nowadays some 70,000 experts work in the field, publishing science and consensus reports endorsed by the Royal Society of London, National Academy of Sciences of the USA, American Association for the Advancement of Science and every other scientific institution and society on the planet. Consensus is not part of doing science, but is certainly a consequence of doing it right. This is reflected in reports from the IPCC, written by hundreds of climate scientists, who volunteer their time, evaluating thousands of papers. If there is any political aspect, it is to water-down the truth, to appease wishywashy politicians. Other synthesis reports, such as the Fourth National Assessment on Climate Change - released by the White House - come to the same conclusions: ■■ We are in trouble and don’t have much time to change our ways. Every one of the nearly 8 million research scientists worldwide would love to show the theory wrong, and win a Nobel Prize. The American Physical Society, comprising some of the brightest people on the planet, describes the evidence as “incontrovertible”, so the likelihood of that happening is vanishingly small. I know it’s difficult for people to admit they’ve been duped by the oil companies, which, like the tobacco companies, mounted a huge campaign of confusion and deception to keep selling their products, but that is the fact of the matter. They are now before the courts in the US for lying, but still their useful idiots continue to wage war on reality. To make the truth even more painful, the IMF estimates the subsidies to oil companies amount to $5 trillion a year money that would be better spent developing renewable energy and switching to electric cars, buses, trains and trucks. I salute Greta Thunberg, a direct descendant of Nobel Laureate Svante Arrhenius. I hope she wins the Nobel prize too. She deserves it, for rattling the climate deniers’ cage. And if you don’t know what a “climate denier” is, I refer you to the online Oxford Dictionaries.

Bullying in schools
Until 1970, the term bully or bullying never existed in NZ schools. I would suggest in part the preponderance of bullying that exists today has come about because teachers’ workloads have become so onerous that their secondary role of patrolling playgrounds and corridors at morning interval and lunch which played a part in reducing bullying pre-1970 have fallen into neglect. Though I certainly am not a fan of it, physical corporal punishment certainly must have played a part in prevention because

1970 was about the time corporal punishment was abolished and bullying exacerbated and came to public notice. Equally effective is taking the assailants’ free time. I remember as a teacher doing just that. The downside of that is the teacher has to, likewise, give up his or her time, contact the parent communicating the misdemeanour and, unless you are at a boarding school, run the pupil home. To make matters worse, on this occasion I was verbally abused by an angry dad which may have indicated where the bullying characteristic in the son may have originated from.

Don’t blame the children
I hope that you do not allow Celia Martin’s claims (Times, November 14) to go unchallenged. She may be correct that today’s schoolchildren have an unhealthy paranoia about their future. That paranoia is fuelled
by the apparent inability of their elders to accept science and the weight of evidence. Yes, in the course of the last 4 billion years CO2 levels have fluctuated over a very wide range. Yes, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere sounds small. But small is not the same as insignificant and the current level is the highest in 800,000 years. And a third up on the most previous peak 300,000 years ago. Yes, volcanoes emit large quantities of CO2 but they also emit vast quantities of dust particles into the atmosphere. Our planet is an interconnected system of processes and among those is the balance between heat (as radiation) reaching Earth and leaving Earth. When I trained as a chemical engineer 45 years ago the verdict was open as to whether the balance was swinging towards warming or cooling. At that time the warming effects of greenhouse gases were largely being mitigated by the cooling effects of the huge quantities of particulate matter being spewed by industry into the atmosphere and reflecting the
Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces Pro Tips
For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding” she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient.

It was an awful feeling as they didn’t even work properly. When I

Who stuffed up this intersection?
Who in their wisdom decides on what is best for our roads? It seems to me that the people in charge of decision-making don’t actually use roads as clearly demonstrated by the complete waste of taxpayers’ money at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Gossamer Road. With their consultants and driving experience, they have decided it would be best to condense the traffic into two lanes now (instead of single file) to turn from a major road (Ti Rakau) into a residential road (Gossamer). This will now condense right on the intersection and cause more of an issue than before. As a user of this intersection, it actually used to work quite well. With the phasing of the lights you used to make it through in a decent amount of time. I believe, and I am sure others do too, money could have been better spent anywhere else in town and we would all be happier if these types of things were done properly, not just trying to address one area and pushing the problem to another street.

Food waste awareness
Food waste is certainly a big issue in our country today. However what we don’t know won’t hurt us, right? In a news items was a statement that Kiwis throw away 157,389 tonnes of food each year. I don’t know how many families that quantity will feed but I do know that if we were to stop the waste and, instead, use the extra to feed the homeless/poor, we’ll have more positive, contented and achievement-oriented people, if reports from the school breakfast and lunch groups are anything to go by. I find it astounding when I walk through the food courts in shopping malls to see the wasted food left on tables, especially when it’s smorgasbord-style food. Are Kiwis not taught to take only what they can eat up and then go for seconds if they need more? In one of the Asian countries, whenever food taken is not eaten and left to be dumped, the person concerned either gets a fine or is charged for the excess food. Perhaps NZ should apply the same rule?

sun’s radiation back into space. Particulates are highly visible and relatively easy to remove, in contrast to CO2 which is invisible and extremely costly to remove. We all know how that debate ended and we have clean air to breath - in the western world at least. But that heat balance has now shifted as a result. As for the correlation between sunspot activity and global temperatures, your correspondent’s own statement speaks for itself. Yes, there is an apparent similarity for the 120 years from 1860. Ask your correspondent what has happened since 1980 (hint: temperatures have continued to climb while cycle duration has steadily declined). We educate our children in scientific method and our understanding of the physical world. Who can blame them for being frustrated at our rejection of that same teaching.
Parliament has dropped the ball on euthanasia, by deciding that if the bill passes its final reading (it did) it will be put to a referendum. The issue is far too complex for the average citizen to discern. We have seen the chaos arising from a Brexit referendum where a 52 per cent/48 per cent vote for, was too close for consensus. Will a majority of 1 vote carry this bill? Why do we need parliament if they cannot make such decisions after insightful debate? Perhaps only MPs with electorates should be allowed to vote for such a bill as they have a mandate from their people. Will the debate be fair, as the pro side has already denigrated those opposed to the bill?
Steve Lincoln, Botany Downs
Man is the culprit
It is not often that I agree with the views of some of your correspondents but Ian George is quite correct in stating that the truth is always revealed under a rational analysis of the data. I have seen no data to suggest that God is in control of our climate however I have seen a lot to suggest man has influenced it greatly.

Building confidence through drama By FARIDA MASTER
U
nbelievable is how Dannemora resident Ethan Korewha describes the moment he heard that he’d been cast as the lead in the National Youth Theatre Company’s (NYTC) latest production The Wizard of Oz, opening on Friday November 29. The 21-year-old is thrilled to play the Wizard. “It’s an absolute privilege,” he says about being part of the enchanting musical drawn from the all-time classic MGM screenplay that celebrates its 80th birthday this year. “I had auditioned for the Tinman but then decided to give the lead role a shot. I didn’t expect to be playing the character of the Wizard and Professor Marvel in two of the shows. I love being part of the theatre so much that I’d be happy even if I got into the chorus,” he says. Ethan, who has been associated with the NYTC since he was 14, has acted in 17 shows to date with the NYTC. These include a variety of roles in classics including Annie, Cats, Shrek, Oliver, Peter Pan, Aladdin and Pinocchio. It didn’t take Ethan long to realise that if you want to be in the cast in the NYTC’s two productions a year, you have to be quick. Till recently, it took three min-

utes for the registrations to fill up. The last time he was half an hour late to register interest for the Cats production, he found himself on a long waiting list. The Wizard of Oz is NYTC’s 30th production. The charitable trust has been working since 2004 to bring confidence and life
skills to young people through the dramatic theatrical arts. Ethan is particularly proud of winning a scholarship in 2015 for his role in Seussical. Twice a year, the NYTC team selects two people to receive the scholarship. To qualify they must show dedication, talent and a definite and marked improvement. The Wizard of Oz has a cast of 320 kids with 240 performing on stage. For Ethan who is now also doing part-time acting work, this will be his second-to-last show, with the last one being The Little Mermaid where his younger brother Ricco will be on stage for the first time. The home-schooled 21-yearold knows he will have to leave NYTC once he turns 22 and hopes to continue to be associated with it. “It’s such a good feeling entertaining people with singing and dancing. I don’t ever want to give it up,” he says. The Wizard of Oz will also have over 5000 school children and teachers attend matinee shows on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. ■■ At: Kiri Te Kanawa, Aotea Centre ■■ On: Friday November 29 at 7pm, Saturday November 30 at 1.30pm and 7pm, Sunday December 1 at 1.30pm.

Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “October was a strong month price wise, with record median prices recorded in six regions and a record equal in Canterbury.
“Additionally, the country saw a new national record median price of $607,500 – the first time the median house price for New Zealand has exceeded the $600,000 mark. This is the highest number of regional record prices we’ve seen for the country in 23 months. “The Gisborne region also had a very strong month with a 37.1 per cent increase in median price year-on-year to $425,000 – the strongest price rise across the country,” continues Norwell. “October saw the Auckland region experience the highest median house price in 19 months at $868,000. This was a 0.8 per cent lift on the median price seen last October and a 2.4 per cent lift on the median price from September this year. “Looking across the Auckland region, Auckland City saw the highest median price in 28 months with a 4.6 per cent annual increase to $1,001,000 - in part due to a 43.0 per cent increase in median price in the Waitemata & Gulf area. Eight locals seen as emerging talent Netball New Zealand’s Emerging Talent selectors will be out in force at next year’s National Development Camp as they continue to profile the country’s next generation of netballers. Fifty athletes from all five netball zones – including eight from local schools - have been invited to attend a development camp in Auckland from January 16-19, where they will gain guidance from five former Silver Ferns. The group of athletes will be split into five teams to be coached by Pathway to Podium coaches Irene van Dyk, Jo Morrison, Temepara Bailey, Sandra Edge and Anna Galvan. The head coaches will be joined by five apprentice coaches in the Performance Coach Qualification pathway while umpires and umpire coaches have also been invited to attend the four-day camp. Netball New Zealand head of high performance Keir Hansen said the National Development Camp would give the athletes an insight into the Netball New Zealand pathway. “For many, this is their first step into that elite environment and an opportunity for us to inspire our developing players
building towards their future,” he said. Athletes will undergo a series of movement competency screenings to assess their readiness for performance. The group will be observed on their performance under pressure with a highly competitive short tournament structure to be employed during the camp. “This is a ‘best on best’ environment where our Emerging Talent Selectors will be able to continue profiling our future pathway athletes,” Hansen said. Selection into the camp was based on identification, observation and tracking from the selectors through various national and regional age-group tournaments, along with feedback from Zone Performance staff. The National Development Camp invitation list of 50 includes eight local reps from the Northern Zone: They are Dajian Brown, Soana Manuofetoa, Breeze Peeni Rata and Amelia Walmsley from Howick College as well as Olivia Ropati, Jasleen Singh, Carys Stythe and Cecile Velghe from Saint Kentigern College.
40th anniversary service for Mt Erebus victims A civic service for the 40th anniversary of the Mt Erebus accident which killed all on board Air New Zealand Flight TE901 on November 28, 1979, will be held at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, on Sunday. The service, on November 24 at 5pm, will be held in the presence of Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy and the Auckland Mayor Phil Goff. Andrew Little representing the Government will also attend. The service will feature special music and creative ways of participation. Erebus families are invited, along with interested members of the public. All are welcome. Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh, aviation historian and chaplain of the Company of Air Pilots (NZ Region) and instigator of the Erebus National Memorial, comments, “The service will be a very special time for Erebus families, and others, to remember and pay tribute to the 257 people who died. When Howick welcomes in Christmas, it doesn’t do it by halves and this coming festive season is no exception. It will be a tinsel-tinted spectacular. Following on from Midnight Madness tomorrow which opens the Christmas shopping run, and the lighting of the tree on Stockade Hill, the Howick Santa Parade officially begins – as the song says – the most wonderful time of the year. It will be the 66th edition of the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday, December 8 and it promises to be bigger and brighter than ever when Santa Claus arrives as the headline act of a colourful cast of thousands. Howick Santa Parade is one of east Auckland’s major mustsee events and it’s more than a street parade this year. “We have entertainment on our main stage in Picton Street from 11am until the start of the parade at 2.30pm,” says

chief elf and event manager Bo Burns, of the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust. “Howick Santa Parade Day is all about showcasing the wonderfully-talented and dedicated people, groups, schools and organisations we have in east Auckland. “There will be 60 groups in the parade and six entertainment performances on the stage from 11am, making it the biggest Christmas parade for participants, with thousands involved.” Burns suggests families and friends make a day of it by taking in the exciting shows and enjoying the hospitality venues and carnival atmosphere throughout Howick Village. The parading groups will assemble in Fencible Drive and adjacent car parks from 12.15pm before marching onto the route of Wellington Street, Picton Street and Cook Street.

“The 60 groups are a great cross-section of our east Auckland community and many feature the children and, for them, that’s what Christmas and the Howick Santa Parade is all about,” says Burns. “I’m very proud that we’ve been able to assemble and organise a large and diverse parade cast for what will be a great day out as we welcome to Howick Santa and Mrs Claus and all their elves. “We’re extremely grateful to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors,” she says. Sponsors and facilitators of the Howick Santa Parade include the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, Barfoot and Thompson, the Howick Local Board, Lion Foundation, the Howick Club, New World, Galbraiths Law plus many smaller donations and help from some supportive local businesses.
