Two new politicians join Howick Local Board T

wo new local body politicians have emerged following Local Elections 2019.

For the Howick Local Board, we see Howick businesswoman Bo Burns take one of three seats in the Howick Subdivision at the expense of town cryer Jim Donald. Sharon Stewart, who was successfully voted back

onto Auckland Council, took the most votes in the Howick Subdivision but relinquishes that for the council seat moving Burns up to third spot.

Also new is Bucklands Beach Olympian and ratepayer advocate Bruce Kendall (Pakuranga Subdivsion) nudging out police officer Garry Boles.

Councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young were easily returned to represent the Howick Ward on the Governing Body while Phil Goff easily romped back home as mayor against feisty opponent John Tamihere.

Mike Turinsky, Peter Young and Bob Wichman were voted back in in the Botany Subdivision.

In Howick joining Burns are incumbents and long-term local body politicians John Spiller and Adele White.

And joining Kendall in the Pakuranga Subdivision are more seasoned politicians, Katrina Bungard and David Collings who was Howick Local Board chair.

Cr Sharon Stewart: nothing ever stops

S h a r o n Stewart has returned to Auckland Council with a whopping 19,320 votes.

Hardly had the results been announced when Sharon was out and about trying to solve problems in the community.

“Nothing ever stops,” she says. “I haven’t been sworn in as yet but have started visiting homes of people who have asked for help. It’s what you do the whole time that counts and not just during election time. You have to be out and about looking at helping solve problems and not just ask residents to call the council call centre if they have a problem.”

She is happy to stand down from the Howick local Board (Sharon won 5643, followed

by John Spiller with 5457 and Adele White at 5010 votes) and let Bo (with 4738 votes) to move into a seat.

“I am particularly pleased to see the Howick Ward had an increase in vote from the last election.”

Paul Young: used to working 100 hours a week Despite having his campaign billboards vandalised and other setbacks including his mother being hospitalised and passing away weeks before the election, Paul Young was re-elected onto Auckland Council. He was also elected onto the Counties Manukau District Health Board (DHB).

He says he will just have to manage his time better considering being a councillor is a contract job and demands a minimum of 40 hours. “But I am used to working 100 hours a week, which I have been doing for the last six months. It’s about time management and determination

to make a difference,” he says.

“I was keen to stand for DHB since I spent a lot of time with my mother in the hospital and learnt a lot about how things function in the health system, the problems they face, parking problems and a lot more which I thought I could help with. Also, the doctor at the rest home my dad is in made me promise last year that I will be on the DHB board so that I can make things better.

“As a councillor I will focus on transportation, fair budget and resource for east Auckland and recognition of diverse communities.”

Adele While has been re-elected to the Howick Local Board (Howick ward) and says that in the 18 years in local government she has seen considerable change to both the Howick Ward and the governance role of local board members.

“The community has asked

“It’s a privilege to have been re-elected to the Howick Local Board (Howick Subdivision). This election has been no different with

some changes to the local board make-up that signifies a desire to see younger people involved in decision-making processes that affect our community,” he says.

“There are also likely to be changes to the board leadership team with a shift away from candidates with political party affiliations.

“Over the next three years I hope to see an urban forest begin to take shape on the former Greenmount landfill site, more work being done to stabilise and protect our vulnerable coastlines and a start made on an environmental education centre in the Mangemangeroa reserve.

and two elected for first time thing I always wanted to do, a path I knew I would cross, I just didn’t know when that would be.

The decision and choice to work alongside Adele White and John Spiller was an easy one. They are both down to earth, passionate, knowledgeable, hardworking professional locals. I was delighted that they wanted to work with me also and from there our #weknowhowick team and brand was formed.

The mixed balance has worked extremely well from initial setup, campaign planning, branding, budgeting, marketing, events, delivering 20,000 brochures with our crew of helpers and putting up 50 billboards!

It’s been a crazy few months in which I’ve already learnt huge amounts and I will continue to learn and grow. I can’t tell you exactly right now what my first term will bring, but I can say that I am extremely grateful to the 4738 people that backed me and voted to have me as their representative.

I can however promise that I will be accountable and like I have said all along, it’s not what I want, but what you - the community - wants and needs that matters most to me. I can imagine there is a lot on the Board’s to-do list, that needs to be actioned and I look forward to getting stuck in and ticking items off our list together!”

Katrina Bungard: listening to our community Former deputy chair of the Howick Local Board, Katrina Bungard says she is excited and humbled by the support the community has continued to show her in her re-election to the Local Board (Pakuranga Subdivision) and to Counties Manukau District Health Board.

“It is an absolute privilege to serve our community and a responsibility I take very seriously,” she says.

Katrina celebrated the win with fellow C&R Communities and Residents colleagues at the Auckland regional event and later “had a lovely dinner with my close family and friends at my home in Pakuranga.”

While she looks forward to the

new board consulting the community to create the Local Board Plan for the next three years, she will continue working with AMETI and advocate strongly for effective transport solutions such as the progression of the Reeves Rd flyover.

Bruce Kendall: thanks for the trust “I’m really happy that I’ve been given a chance to be involved. I really am hoping to effect positive change. I was close last time (Local Elections 2016) with pretty much no effort. I really thought I had a good chance and for that I thank all those who put their trust in me.

I’m really pleased I ran with Steve Udy and Wayne Huang. I’m sad they didn’t get over the line. They have been really supportive as has (Councillor) Sharon Stewart.

Peter says he is a man of action who believes in happy and healthy communities.

“In the next three years I am going to push for an indoor sports centre.

There are plans for five football fields in Flat Bush and I am pushing to get one area for a multisport centre at the Orchards Farm along Baptist Rd, Flat Bush.

“I will also be pushing for an indoor swimming pool at the Barry Curtis Park so that people keep fit by being involved in healthy sporting activity.

“That apart, in terms of trans-

“I was confident of being re-elected but I knew it could be close as the others were good candidates.

Voters obviously wanted the continuance of my experience and know how to help guide the Local Board on the right path.

Lyon roars in the face of Luxon

F

ormer Air New Zealand chief executive Chris Luxon entering the Botany candidate selection for the National Party does not faze local nominee Stephen Lyon – or sitting independent MP Jami-Lee Ross.

“If there is one thing I intend to get absolutely right, it is being of service to the people of Botany,” says Lyon. He goes on to suggest that he has all the capability necessary to contribute to the National Party, and New Zealand at the highest level but for him it must start with service to his local electorate.

In addition to running a successful business Stephen has been an officer in the New Zealand Army, a advocate for the marine environment and leader in Cook Islands national and Pacific regional business organisations.

As previously reported, Lyon

grew up in the area, completing all his schooling in east Auckland.

Lyon says his experiences in Botany have “shaped him to be the person he is today, especially with regards to his abilities to empathise and communicate with our many cultures”.

Lyon is no stranger to a tough battle. He built a team that successfully advocated for the protection of sharks in all Cook Islands waters, opposed by a very aggressive Chinese lobby.

He attributes his success to his ability to get amongst the community and really understand what is important to the people, then communicate that to political leaders to affect change. Lyon has gone on to successfully advocate on many other national issues within the Cook Islands.

Back now in Botany, Lyon says of the selection process to find a National candidate to stand in the

Botany Electorate in next year’s General Election: “I am thoroughly enjoying meeting the members of the National Party through the nomination process, listening to their concerns, and hearing about their history within the electorate.”

“Leadership starts with service, and being of service is exactly what I intend to do” At time of going to print, Agnes Loheni, list MP and National’s spokesperson for small business and Pacific people has intimated she is also running for the National nomination for Botany.

The Times has reached out Christopher Luxon for comment.

Meanwhile, rogue MP Ross, now an independent after a huge public fall-out with National leader Simon Bridges last year, said in a media statement he has always welcomed “a good, old-fashioned, grassroots election campaign”.

“I fight hard and tough for our community and constituents,” he said.

“I’ve spent 15 years serving our community, and I’m happy to put my local credentials up for local people to make a decision on.”

Ross said it was arrogant for

National to believe they can fix their leadership problems “by parachuting someone in who will automatically win an electorate seat”.

“I’ve spent this year knocking on doors and asking constituents whether they want me to continue as their voice. The overwhelming response has been that they appreciate an experienced local person standing up for them,” he said.

“Botany is now the most marginal seat in the country. It looks very different on the ground than it does from the flight path overhead.

“While Botany people know they have in me someone who sits in the middle of both parties and will work with either side to advance local issues, others see themselves racing to Wellington to advance their own personal aspirations the day after an election.

“The voters in Botany are astute and will not be taken for granted in this way.”

Southside Streeters hot rod show a big hit Southside Streeter’s Hot Rod in Howick at the weekend was a great success.

It’s been seven years since the club, established in Howick 48 years ago, last put on a car show.

Show director Ian Neary said the club was very happy with the turnout with 20 per cent more people visiting than was budgeted for, with around 2000 people visiting.

“We had 32 cars in the show inside and a rolling car show

ast Saturday was the Local Government election, where we saw two Auckland Councillors and nine Howick Local Board members elected to represent our east Auckland community for the next three years.

Congratulations to Paul Young and Sharon Stewart, who return as our two local Councillors, to returning Local Board members Katrina Bungard, David Collings, John Spiller, Mike Turinsky, Adele White, Bob Wichman, and Peter Young, and a very special congratulations to our two first-time board members, Bo Burns and Bruce Kendall.

I also want to thank Garry Boles and Jim Donald who were not reelected after serving as members on the Local Board for several terms each.

Garry served east Auckland as a member of the Local Board since 2013 and prior to that was a longserving community constable in the area.

Fortunately, Garry was elected to the Counties Manukau District Health Board so will continue to be involved locally on behalf of our community.

Jim has been a Howick Local Board member since the Auckland Council merger in 2010 and served for six years prior to that as a Manukau City Councillor, so has had a long record of public service in our community.

Thank you Garry and Jim and my best wishes for the future.

Good vibe at 30th Anniversary of the Howickians “It just brings home what a fabulous and unique place we grew up in, and how lucky we are to be able to meet and greet lovely people, and remember our connection since childhood,” said one attendee.

Howickians travelled from as far away as the USA and Australia, and throughout New Zealand to attend. They enjoyed delicious homemade goodies, sunny skies, stunning views of Howick Beach and the bowling club greens, and a wide range of

photographs from by-gone days.

Long-term Howickian, Lenise Farrow, was assisted by Pamela Taylor, in the cutting of the anniversary cake, and all attendees received a commemorative pen (in Howick’s colours of burgundy and cream), to celebrate the occasion.

Hawthornden was built for Captain MacDonald in 1848 while his Sale Street homestead was being built. Later in 1859 it became the home of Col SP Peacocke.

Servant problems?

Local historian Alan La Roche continues his series marking the district’s 170th anniversary last year and the countdown to the 175th celebrations.

W

hen the first settlers arrived in Auckland, many expected to employ serv-

ants.

The officers of the Fencibles, ministers of religion and major land owners all had servants. But in 1847 when the Fencibles arrived in Howick, there was a great shortage of domestic servants. Many in Auckland thought that the Fencible women and their daughters or Maori would fill this role. Some demanded wages of up to £30, even though they could not iron clothes or cook. Most immigrants came to New Zealand for a better life, proper wages and time off each week as well as a bed and food.

Colonel Peacocke of Cook Street, Howick had a governess and two Portuguese servants. Governor Sir George Grey had one domestic servant. The Rev Vicesimus Lush complained about his servant Bessy Sainsbury who came with the family from England but was homesick and did not adjust to colonial duties.

She was only 15 years old but demanded one shilling a day which Lush claimed was exorbitant. Bessy was dismissed and replaced by Sarah Trimmer, Mary Heath then Sarah Mellon. They had to light the fires to boil water, cook meals, clean the house and were on call until after dinner dishes had been put away.

They slept in the attic. Servants were expected to attend church with the family, but sit in the free back pews with employers in the front pews.

Mrs Jane Lynch looked after Fencible Frances Conway in Rodney Street, producing meals for two shillings a week and doing his washing for one shilling a week after his wife died leaving him with two young children to look after.

Single Fencible William Flowers had a house-

keeper even though his wages and pension were low. Ann Canty washed clothes and helped with John Roche’s children after his wife died. Good servants were paid £20 to £30 a year by 1866.

One of the worst employers owned a general store and hotel in Howick whose housemaid from 11 years of age until she was 19, cooked, cleaned, and served the family for no wages but had a bed and meals provided. She was only given half a day off per year, on Christmas Day afternoon and eventually left to get married. Dr Bacot in Bleak House was generous to his servant with the same privileges as given to his children.

Larger homesteads such as Bleak House in Bleak House Road had many domestic and agricultural workers. They employed Maori girls in the kitchen. Most of the domestic and agricultural workers were given meals and a bed but no wages. Only the lead ploughman received a wage. Immigration officials brought in more domestic servants but many could see a better life if they married, which they did. It took many years before domestic and agricultural workers received fair treatment and wages.

Hemi Pepene, Pakuranga’s most successful farmer, sold his wheat crop to Australian goldfields for a better price than Partington’s flourmill in Auckland. This Maori had several Maori farm workers as well as a European servant which was unusual in the 1850s.

By the 1880s, domestic servants, cooks, housemaids and dairymaids were so hard to get that the Government advertised in Britain, offering free passages, plus wages from £25 to £50 a year, with regular time off work for their own pleasure and to make their own clothes.

Today, household servants deserve adequate wages and living conditions.

Auckland leads the way with a rise in home sales and prices

National monthly sales were the strongest for a September month since 2016. * House prices also strengthened in almost all regions in September and Auckland is on the cusp of recording a positive annual gain in prices – last seen a year ago. * Kiwibank’s economics team remains optimistic about the outlook for the housing market heading into 2020. NZ still faces a severe shortage of affordable homes and population growth remains well above average. Moreover, policy uncertainty has abated, and mortgage rates are heading lower.

City of sales! There were real signs of a winter thaw in September according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.

here were real signs of strength in New Zealand’s housing market in September according to the just released Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) data.

What’s more, strength was seen in Auckland’s market, a market that has been dragging headline indicators down.

Nationally, the 5896 sales recorded

by REINZ were the strongest for a September month in three years. Seasonally adjusted, sales were largely flat in the month. The headline result for September was a combination of a seasonally adjusted 5.8 per cent month-on-month jump in Auckland sales, offset by falls elsewhere – particularly Waikato, the Bay of Plenty and Canterbury.

House prices in the month were stronger in almost all regions, with the REINZ house price index 1.4 per cent month-on-month up, taking annual house price appreciation to 3.6 per cent year-on-year, the strongest rate of growth seen since October last year.

Jeremy Couchman, senior Kiwibank economist said there was a favourable move in Auckland too, with prices up 1.6 per cent in the month. The worm looks to have turned in the Super City. Annual prices were only 0.8 per cent year-onyear lower, that’s far less depressing than the 4.3 per cent year-on-year fall seen back in April, and prices may start to lift on an annual basis in the coming months.

“There were consistent indicators of a tightening in housing market over September, Couchman said.

“For instance, seasonally adjusted median number of days to sell fell a full three days to 37. This was driven by some decent falls in Auckland and Waikato.

“Regardless, a weaker outlook for growth means the RBNZ is likely to cut the OCR to 0.75 per cent in November, followed by another cut early next year,” Couchman said.

“Along with continued strong population growth, this should add further impetus to the housing market and housing-related investment.

Recent policy moves that have targeted the investor side of the market should contain any exuberance though.

“We think the housing market will continue to strengthen heading into next year and we expect aggregated price gains to pick up towards 5-6 per cent year-on-year in 2020. This is expected to be driven by modest rises in Auckland, following over three years of either flat or falling prices.”

Meanwhile, the regions that have experienced significant house price appreciation in recent years are likely to see gains slow as the current rally in prices runs out of steam.

Strong bond rises from disaster

rom the most deadly disasters come rock-solid relationships.

This was the amply illustrated at the 20 year Earthquake Remembrance Dinner initiated by chair of Auckland Civil Defence, Cr Sharon Stewart along with Jeff Liu, director general Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Auckland.

Search and Rescue teams from both New Zealand and Taiwan shared stories of rushing to each other’s rescue when hit by mass destruction in Taipei and Christchurch. Giving credit to the valiant deeds of gallant firemen, Sir Barry Curtis

spoke about the earthquake of 6.3 magnitude that hit Christchurch eight years ago causing severe and wide spread damage.

“While Christchurch and its people are still coming to terms with it, fire fighters from Taiwan responded immediately and helped to overcome the serious consequences. In her role as chair of Auckland Civil Defence, it was Cr Sharon Stewart that got things moving.”

Sharon first contacted fire fighter Mitchell Brown, a Howick local then and asked if he could get a Search and Rescue team ready to fly to Taiwan within a couple of hours to help the earthquake-struck city.

On finding out that there was no budget available to fly the brave men over, Sharon immediately got in touch with the influencers in the Taiwanese community who sprung into action to send New Zealand’s

first ever NZ Search and Rescue to fly out to an international disaster.

Local Howick residents YS Hsieh, CK and Nancy Shih, Jimmy Huang and many others dug deep as they put a team of New Zealand Specialist Search and Rescue on a direct flight to Taiwan. The Reunion Dinner hosted on the weekend had two of the fire fighters who had flown to Taiwan in their hour of need, members of the Tzu Chi Foundation in East Tamaki known to help people who’ve been hit by natural disasters; members of Civil Defence not only from New Zealand but also from Taiwan at the Grand Park Chinese Seafood Restaurant. The event was well attended by prominent members of the Taiwanese Community including Jerry Shih president of the Taiwan Business Association as well as Bruce Linghu, deputy mayor Taichung city, Taiwan.

Chapel Road crash

P

olice were called at about 9.40 on Saturday to reports of a car crash involving two vehicles on Chapel Road,. There were no reported injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the white car was hit by a green Hiace van which was later towed away by another vehicle.

Times Facebook comments suggest that the accident was not an isolated case; “I live on this road and see this regularly. If you travel another few metres down Whitford Road you will see another car with the same damage! People treat this road like a race track often texting, or on cell phones and it is pretty annoying.”

Jim Donald has been a Justice of the Peace for 22 years serving the Howick Community. He has recently retired from this role and on Monday I presented him with a certificate and a badge from the Justice of the Peace Association to thank him for his many years of service to the Howick Community.

Jim is of course actively involved in the Howick Community, and has helped a huge number of people as a Justice of the Peace. His wife Ella also attended the presentation. Ella has been very supportive of Jim and answered the phone many times for people wishing to visit to request JP services.

Climate alarmists, media to blame I’ve got some good news for those who are worried or even scared about global warming and the effects this would have on ecological systems worldwide.

For the youth of today who are concerned about their future

tomorrows, the good news is - they do not have to be anxious or to fear.

Man is not in control of the climate, God is. Our responsibility is to be an excellent caretaker of the planet’s resources.

By this I mean looking after the waterways, taking care of the air we breathe and continuing the eradication of plastic contamination of the food chain.

The alarmists are basically deceived with the lie that man can manipulate the climate, it is media propaganda.

The truth is always revealed under a rational analysis of the data, not with worldwide marches, fear, and youthful emotional hype.

An icon in the equestrian world For many readers, last weeks’ newspaper would have been the first time that they were introduced to Marie Morgan, in the article ‘Equestrian teacher retires after 70 years in the saddle’. However, Marie (or Mrs Morgan as the pupils call hereven long after we have left the riding school!) has been an icon in the equestrian world of south Auckland for many years.

For many of us, Mrs Morgan and Fairhill riding school provided an escape into a horsey utopia that our lives were sorely lacking. Through her expert and strict but fair stewardship, we learned to horse ride surrounded by others our age.

Lessons ranged from roaming around the hills of Flat Bush to learning dressage in the arena, always under her skilful guidance.

Polocrosse, games, jumping, and

drill work were never off the cards.

One of the many wonderful things about riding at Fairhill was meeting friends who shared the same horse obsession. Some of my longest and closest friends I met through riding at Mrs Morgan’s when I started there some 15 years ago. As we grew older, Mrs Morgan too has become a friend and she certainly has fantastic stories to share and has been on jaunts which rival our wildest days!

Mrs Morgan is also dearly loved by many of our parents for providing a place where their horse-mad children could go to exhaust themselves of every parent’s worst nightmare: the ‘I want a pony’ phase.

Now comes the end of an era and Mrs Morgan’s well earned ‘retirement’, though I doubt Marie will be slowing down anytime soon. While we will no longer ride together, the wider network of pupils and friends remains strong and the memories of our childhoods spent together will always be happy moments to be shared amongst us.

One of my favourite memories with Mrs Morgan was when I made the decision to move to Nelson, close to where Marie grew up in Blenheim. As I pondered the distance between the two towns, Mrs Morgan told me not to worry and assured me “Nelson’s only three days’ ride away”.

Thank you for highlighting Mrs Morgan’s career, her incredibly wide reaching and positive impact on young people, and her good humour in your article in The Times. If only we could wind back the clock and enjoy Fair hill all over again!

Sorry, I stand corrected

In a response to my letter to the editor regarding the development on Sandspit Road, (Howick & Pakuranga Times, October 3).

Developer, Mr Jans of Box Property has contacted me to point out my letter contained inaccurate and defamatory statements.

With regards to the issue of car parking in the surrounding area, it was made clear to me that 113 parking spaces (14 of which for visitors) will be provided, which I acknowledge my letter indeed failed to include, an oversight I apologise for.

This error also had a significant bearing on development costs statements I made.

Furthermore, land procurement costs and development contributions to modification of surrounding infrastructure should have been more accurately included, which I failed to do.

Mr Jans informed me the costs for the development I used to make my statements were significantly underestimated and, although I’m obviously not privileged to the actual numbers, I hereby retract these statements and apologise for the inaccuracies.

The estimated numbers and figures contained in my letter were merely statements of my opinion which I am happy to stand corrected on.

Overall, I extend an apology to Mr Jans as the tone of my letter was unnecessarily injurious and aggressive which I admit was ‘below the line’ and uncalled for.

Extinction Horticulture

Chicken Little is hit on the head by an acorn and alarms the whole town that the sky is falling! Apparently, Deloitte (who were commissioned to do research) and Horticulture New Zealand’s chief executive Mike Chapman have been hit on the head by a falling carrot – such is their alarmist reveal about vegetable growing and prices in the years to come. What absolute compost!

Following the lead of such groups as Extinction Rebellion and other groups who see the end of days in various cabbage leaves, Horticulture New Zealand also seems to feel the roots of calamity and has served up the fear and anxiety.

Of all people, Mike should be aware of the huge potential of vertical farming – a horticultural methodology of growing value – which uses 90 per cent less water, no soil, less energy, has a smaller footprint and can have over thrice the productivity of current horticultural practices; an example can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=WOQHwjnOTng&t=70s.

New Zealand Horticulture is threatened not by “competition for highly productive land, access to freshwater, climate change mitigation and increasing government and council regulation”, but by a lack of imagination. The world is not going to starve and the price of fresh vegetables is not going to skyrocket – particularly rocket which is easily grown in vertical farms.

In a world that seemingly awakes to a new crisis every day, we to need cultivate more measured responses to perceived issues.

otholes continue to plague the carpark adjacent to the Warehouse and Pak’nSave at Botany Town Centre.

The area, which is controbody corporate, has been in a state of disrepair for some time and bad sentiment is growing with locals who bring their families to shop.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has sent a letter to the CEOs of Foodstuffs, The Warehouse and the owner of Danske Mobler asking them to address the issue.

Foodstuffs were approached for comment and external relations manager Sue Hamilton said:

“We’ve heard the complaints about the carpark at Pak’nSave Botany and other stores in the area. We are working with the body corporate to rectify this.

Double-heartbreak for Heimgartner A

fter impressing for the majority of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, disaster struck not once, but twice for Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner in the closing stages of the race.

The 24-year old Melbournebased Kiwi was sharing the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima for Kelly Racing with Bryce Fullwood at the weekend.

After fantastic performances by both drivers across the first three-quarters of the race, Heimgartner was fourth on the road and in-sight of third position.

It was then on lap 146 that the first disaster struck – Heimgartner was inadvertently called to the pits needlessly when the radio channel was opened late.

“My engineer was trying to tell me ‘Winterbottom is going

to pit now’ but the channel was opened late and I only heard ‘pit now’. I wasn’t supposed to pit.

We were fuelled to the end and if that hadn’t happened, we should have ended up on the podium,” Heimgartner lamented after the race.

He rejoined in 12th position full of fervour and by the time the final laps were underway was charging to be back up to eighth position and looking likely to salvage a top-five finish.

It was then however that disaster struck a second time, with the #7 Nissan coming into heavy and race-ending contact with the wall at what is known as Forrest’s Elbow with three laps remaining in the race.

“It has been absolutely gutting,” Heimgartner said. “We had a really strong day out there.

Bryce started from 13th and we were into the top 10 by lap 23.

From there we worked our way up to fourth and in touch of the top three for the final quarter of the race.

“With the situation how it was for the cars in front of me, we should have finished on the podium.

“But as it happened, we ended up in the pits and then when it looked like I could possibly salvage a top five, I ended up in the wall.

“Heartbreaking is the only way to describe it.”

In 2020 the Encore age level (1318 years) are performing Legally Blonde Jr during the Term 1 school holidays.

The Stars age level (8-12 years) will present Disney’s The Lion King Jr at the end of Term 2.

The Onstage age level (6-12 years) is for those children who may not have any prior experience on the stage. Their show (to be announced soon) will rehearse over Terms 2 and 3.

The end of year show combines both Stars and Encore age groups in The Wizard of Oz (Young Performers Edition).

Opportunities to perform in front of our community is another way to help the community understand the Chinese culture and to promote closer cultural relations. Jennifer Liao and Chao Yu from the Asian Library Trust and NZ Multicultural Exchange and Experience Centre were present at the event and are very grateful to Owairoa School for the opportunity to perform. We were also very pleased to see our local MP Simeon Brown in attendance to support.

espite losing two of their last three games against Ireland, the brilliant All Black backs should pave the way to a Rugby World Cup quarterfinal victory over the Irish in Japan on Saturday night.

However Ireland’s uncompromising forwards and Jonathan Sexton’s goal-kicking boot remain a threat should the defending champions lack discipline.

The greatest fear for all eight quarter-finalists is a red card by referees who have been ordered to clamp down hard on head high tackles.

However it’s a pity they don’t police the offside rule against some teams that favour a rush defence that strangles enterprising back attack. Consequently, one of Richie Mo’unga’s smartest ploys is the cross kick or kick pass that wings Sevu Reece and George Bridge have converted into tries.

It was a shame Typhoon Hagibis forced the cancellation of the All Blacks match against Italy that robbed Brodie Retallick and Jack Goodhue of valuable game time following long injury-enforced breaks.

The store is popular with op-shoppers and forms part of a trio of charity shops in the arcade.

Paul Hayes, marketing and communications manager Cancer Society Auckland/Northland said the Cancer Society had reviewed its retail strategy earlier this year, considering among other options, expanding the number of Pre-loved Boutique stores across Auckland.

In a statement he said, “The
