Schools brace for shut-down S

chools in east Auckland were yesterday bracing themselves for news of possible closures due to coronavirus which would impact not just tens of thousands of students and teachers, but parents as well.

At the time of deadline the Ministry of Education was expected to make a statement amid growing fear of the potential spread of Covid-19.

Most schools already have strict protocols for staff and students in place. The Times contacted several local schools. Not all responded to our requests for information.

Owairoa Primary School principal Alan McIntyre told the Times they invested a huge amount of time and effort trying to keep everyone safe.

“We’re determined “to be strong, act decisively and protect our students, staff and the parents.”

“We are abiding by the Minis-

try of Education and Ministry of Health guidelines and expect to hear today (Monday) what we need to do in preparation for a possible school closure.

Some of Owairoa’s initiatives include a concerted effort to have all staff and students to practice safe and hygienic practices”. The school has also engaged a nurse to take student temperatures and sent home students with identified higher-than-normal temperatures. They’ve also informed staff that they must wash their hands before entering the staffroom and purchased hand sanitiser, Dettol spray and antiseptic wet wipes for all classes.

“Things are moving fast for us but we are doing our very best to keep ahead of the virus.”

esiree Morgan was shocked and stressed when she first discovered that she was carrying triplets.

Going from having one to four children was a shocker says the motherof-four.

“I was thinking of all the expenses and how we’d cope,” she says of the time she learned she was pregnant with triplets.

It was only after she met someone at Multiples Counties Manukau that she realised it was going to be ok.

Multiples Counties Manukau is a volunteer-run organisation that supports families in their journey from expecting to raising multiples—families that have two, three or more babies at a time.

President of the group for the last two years, Desiree says that the club provides a support system for parents with multiples by giving them free nappies, help sourcing premature clothing/bedding, providing support of a lactation consultant, as well as mother helpers to cope with post natal depression.

They address diverse needs of families with multiples by working in partnership with community groups, health care providers and educators.

The group recently celebrated Multiples Awareness Week with a picnic at the Botanical Gardens—the theme being `share the journey-stronger together’.

“We think the awareness week is important because of the difficulties faced by families with multiples are often unknown,” says Desiree, mother to 16-year-old Cheyenne, Dante, Roxas (four-year-old twins) and Vincent Eason (two-year-old).

Multiple births have higher rates of complications, birth defects, prematurity and difficulties with feeding.

“Parents of multiples barely get a few hours’ sleep and each additional baby can lead to mental breakdown,” says Desiree.

“Also there is often a financial burden involved.”

Talking about the logistics of feeding, clothing, sleeping patterns and bathing multiples, she says it is tricky and often babies experience less one-

on-one time.

“As a result, there is a higher rate of parental guilt, despair and postpartum depression for both mothers and fathers.”

Statistically, the rates of divorce in the first year of marriage is much higher, she says.

“Support, especially in the first six months, is vital to the health of every family member,” says Desiree who experienced post-partum depression.

One of the triplets was stillborn and Roxas (one of the twins) was not expected to survive either.

“We didn’t know if he was going to live until he was five days old and was quite fragile.”

Those were hard times but now Desiree is a self-assured mother who

believes that the best thing about being a volunteer at Multiples Counties Manukau is the difference they make to people’s lives.

“Also, I can easily understand their struggles and am grateful that they helped me at a time when I was very vulnerable,” she says.

Desiree admits she was a tad disappointed when she went for an ultrasound two years after the birth of her twins and discovered there was only one blob showing up instead of two.

According to Statistics New Zealand in 2018 there were 714 sets of twins born. The percentage of multiple births that make up the overall birth rate was 1.24 per cent.

Triplet births stayed the same with three sets born in 2018 (all stats are including stillbirths). In 2018, the first set of quads in 20 years was born.

‘A child could be killed’ school at wits’ end with AT

Covid-19 panic buying eases Coronavirus hysteria has seen many Auckland supermarkets overwhelmed around Auckland the past couple of weeks – and some east Auckland supermarkets weren’t immune.

The panic-buying gained momentum as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases grew.

Five have been confirmed thus far.

A spokesperson for Foodstuffs, which has brands including Pak’nSave, New World and Four Square, told the Times its teams had been working around the clock for the past 72 hours (in the initial mad rush after the first confirmed case) “to ensure we can continue to feed New Zealand and look after our people”.

The hardest hit stores were those in the greater Auckland area and, as a result, Foodstuffs had prioritised deliveries to

these stores over the next couple of days.

“We delivered hundreds of additional pallets over the weekend and we estimate that we completed more than 100,000 additional case picks this past weekend,” the spokesperson said.

“We have seen in-store and online shopping activity soften since Sunday morning and we are now focused on replenishing stores’ stock and supporting our people who have been working tirelessly to meet customer demand.

“Our out of stock items are ones that are experiencing significant global demand, including hand sanitiser and face masks. We are working with vendors to replenish supply of these specific items, but as of right now, we don’t have an estimated timeframe on when stores’ stock will be

replenished. We will pass stock straight through to stores when available.”

Many household essentials have seen a significant increase in sales including toilet paper, bread and milk, Foodstuffs said.

“These products are made or manufactured in New Zealand and are not under threat and shoppers should look to shop for these items as they normally would. Stockpiling puts stores under unnecessary pressure and delays when they can replenish stock and limits availability for other shoppers.

“Right now we are focused on supporting our stores’ replenishment efforts and making sure essentials are available for all shoppers.

Meanwhile Countdown chose not to comment. “We don’t think it’s helpful for New Zealanders at the moment,” a spokesperson told the Times.

Morrin’s big peaceful adventure Local identity Morrin Cooper has been sharing tales of his recent trip to the 2020 World Peace Summit in Korea.

Cooper, the former mayor of Howick, had attended the event before in Asia but said he was “incredibly surprised’ to be personally asked back by the Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The United Peace Foundation is a sub-branch of the United Nations. The World Summit 2020 Assembly brought together a wide range of experts and stakeholders to offer insights and recommendations that contribute to building a

world of lasting peace.

Food production, scientific work and religious missions were discussed.

The event was attended by 5000 people from 150 nations from February 3-8.

Cooper was impressed by the organisation of the event, which ran seamlessly, he said.

In terms of takeaways from the event, Cooper said he now regards US President Donald Trump (despite his detractors) as “a man with a heart.. who has done some wonderful work towards peace in the South Asia region”.

e Uho o Te Nikau school principal Mel Bland is exasperated by lack of action from Auckland Transport over a temporary pedestrian bridge and the implementation of digital speed signs, saying “a child could be killed” if measures are not put in place immediately.

The school is pushing for a temporary pedestrian bridge to be built on Flat Bush School Road while a decision is made on building a long-term full vehicle/pedestrian bridge.

Currently, students as young as five have to cross a narrow bridge with no footpaths while cars speed past at up to 100km/h. The temporary bridge, which has a price tag of $1 million, was approved by Howick Local Board last year.

Recently there was yet another frightening near-miss on the bridge, witnessed by parents.

Bland said in an e-mail to AT’s team leader of road safety Adam Beattie: “The child would have most definitely have been killed and I have spent more time in conversation with my parent community. This community is absolutely outraged. They understand that you can’t control motorists but you do control roads, speed zones.. it has been three years we have been waiting for support to keep our children safe.”

Beattie did give a timeline for the completion of the bridge next year and suggested a stop-gap measure “It is my understanding that the new pedestrian bridge and associated footpath connections is anticipated to be completed by June 2021. He proposed to “narrow the bridge and approaches to one lane, and provide a temporary, segregated footpath until the new bridge is built. This may receive some negative feedback from drivers and other sections of the local community.”

There is currently an 80km/h speed zone in front of the school which the school wants reduced to 40km/h to bring into line with other schools in Auckland. The school has begged AT for electronic warning signs to be installed.

Additional warning and advisory speed signage will be investigated for the crossing point” As a result, the school has resorted to suggesting to AT that they (the school) should buy their own active warning signs, but Beattie poured cold water over the idea. “Cost is not the issue and it is something that we have budget for. The issue is that digital 40km/h signs require a bylaw to allow them to be legal speed limits and to allow them to be enforced. Also, the school has to meet criteria, which is set out in law, before a change can be made to the speed limit. These are national requirements and Auckland Transport does not have the authority to change this.”

There is also a desperate need to get a pedestrian crossing painted in front of the school.

In regards to this Beattie said: “We will arrange for the zebra crossing markings and associated signage to be installed in the near future.”

Bland said constant delays and empty promises from AT had them consider removing speed signs from nearby Ako Place (which currently has no through traffic).

This common-sense approach was again shut down by Beattie who said: “No, they are necessary for the traffic management plan that the contractor has put in place…we will provide additional signs.”

At the date of publication, these additional signs have not been provided, and Mr Beattie has not responded to the Times inquiry.

Ferry service needs looking at

ecently I have been requesting feedback from people who use the ferry service from Half Moon Bay through to the city after a number of constituents raised concerns with me about this service.

I have received a large number of responses both positive and negative.

We are very lucky in east Auckland to have an excellent ferry service from Half Moon Bay through to the CBD, with recent investment by the Howick Local Board providing an excellent ferry terminal.

The ferry provides commuters a very efficient means to travel into the city, but there is room for improvement.

Whilst many acknowledge the good things about the ferry service, there have been some significant issues raised with me as well which mostly relate to how the service is operated

by Fullers.

Issues include ferries being cancelled at short notice, ferries unable to take their full load of passengers due to understaffing meaning many

commuters being left behind, and buses replacing the ferry when the ferry can’t operate, but again with poor communication.

Improved methods of communication between Fullers and passengers have been suggested, such as the creation of a dedicated app with push notifications anytime a ferry service is delayed or cancelled.

Last week, I addressed letters to the CEOs of both Auckland Transport and Fullers Group requesting a joint meeting with representatives from both organisations to discuss these issues.

Houstoun plays The Egyptian for the final time After almost 50 years of playing, New Zealand’s foremost pianist Michael Houstoun will be performing in South Auckland for the final time on Saturday March 21 with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO) before retirement.

Performing Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5, nicknamed ‘The Egyptian’, Houstoun says he loves the charm, exoticism and virtuosity of the work.

Since first performing with the MSO in 2005 at the opening of what is now the Vodafone Events Centre, this will be the sixth time Houstoun performs with the MSO. “Michael is our most-loved soloist,” says Uwe Grodd, MSO’s musical director.

Grangers Pt project in the works A

fully upgraded Grangers Point could be the jewel in the Bucklands Beach area’s crown.

Grangers Point is poised for future development as the Howick Local Board, Auckland Transport (AT) and Auckland Council consider addressing better beach side paths and solving coastal erosion by restoring the popular Bucklands Beaches.

Grangers Point separates Little Bucklands Beach from Bucklands Beach and has long been a focal point for sailing. The original club house was built in the sixties also accommodating winter haul-out for boat maintenance.

Bucklands Beach Yacht Club (BBYC) is now recognised as the BBYC Sailing Academy and still accommodates winter haul out.

The sailing club has nurtured and trained budding young sailors since the 1960s.

BBYC club manager Lyle Tresadern said the BBYC Sailing Academy trains more than 1000 young sailors each year across several programmes from the “Have a Go”

“This area has been an important factor to international sailing success, with the area having produced more Olympic sailing medals and more offshore champions than any other small body of water in the world,” Tresadern said.

“BBYC Grangers Point is an important community facility. In addition to the junior sailing centre, there is a race control tower for keel yacht racing, a community meeting room used by art groups, toilets that are available for public use and an all tide deep water launching ramp.

But due to many reasons, the facility is not meeting its full potential and requires an upgrade.”

To coincide with new local authority attention towards

upgrading these beaches and paths, BBYC is planning to partner with the local board, AT and council under the Community Facility Partnerships Programme to redevelop the Grangers Point site.

“It is envisaged that Grangers Point will become a community ocean sport and marine education facility that will satisfy existing needs and future demand,” Tresadern said.

Under consideration as part of the redevelopment, features include: ■■ Redevelopment and enlargement of the building to include more meeting rooms and function space, boat storage and workshop, haul-out equipment storage, accommodation and event/water safety observation and control tower ■■ A water safety focal point for the Tamaki River providing faster potential response times ■■ New public toilets, changing rooms and showers ■■ Complete beach restoration covering reticulated, vertical and stepped stonewalls north and south of Grangers Point

■■ New breakwater, boat ramp, floating ramp and dock.

■■ Roadside and oceanside duel footpath/cycle ways ■■ New dinghy and sailing boat lock-up facility ■■ Creation of a reef on the western side of the hard stand with tidal pools which will improve biodiversity “The upgrade will allow for a wider range of user groups than just sailing and haul-out,” said Tresadern. “It could store other man and wind-powered craft equipment such as waka ama, dragon boats and windsurfers. Ocean Swimming and triathlon training and events could be safely staged here.

“School groups could use the building and learn about the diverse all tide marine ecosystems and tidal currents all close at hand.

It could host major ocean sporting events and attract high level athletes wanting to train here – all boosting the local economy.”

Local business delivers scholarship for college Howick company Southern Cross Partners is putting up a substantial scholarship for Howick College students.

Southern Cross Partners was founded by Barry and Julia Milward in 1997 to assist businesspeople who were having difficulty obtaining finance for projects. The company will help a

promising Howick College student achieve their dream of pursuing full-time study in either a Bachelor of Business or a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at any New Zealand university.

“Helping Kiwis achieve their dreams has been the driving motivation behind finance company Southern Cross Partners,

for more than 20 years,” Mr Milward said.

Mr Milward and Southern Cross Partners CEO and former Howick College parent Cliff Carr met Howick College principal Iva Ropati and director of community development Jennifer Roshan to offer the college an undergraduate tertiary scholarship with a value

of up to $72,000 spread over a maximum of four years study.

The scholarship will be awarded to a Year 12 or 13 student who demonstrates academic achievement, community involvement and leadership potential and will cover the successful student’s tuition fees, study related resource costs and/

or student accommodation. It will also include a two-week internship each year with Southern Cross Partners. “This is the most significant scholarship Howick College has ever received and we are delighted to have been chosen as the recipient of such an exciting student opportunity,” said Mr Ropati.

ore than 100 guests gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of the Howick Historical Village on Sunday March 8.

Howick Lions have been providing working bees since the village’s conception right through to the present day.

They have been involved in fencing, maintenance, gardening and painting.

There was a special anniversary celebration attended by various invited volunteers from over the years.

This was followed by a tour,

various presentations with much reminiscing in the Pakuranga School historical building. Afterwards guests had afternoon tea followed by the cutting of the 40th anniversary cake in Bell House.

The festivities continued on Sunday with a special anniversary fete day from 10am-5pm.

There were games, food, stalls and activities and many families took a picnic along!

The weather was perfect for the 40th anniversary celebrations at Howick Historical Village.

Estuary Art and Ecology entries sought The 14th Estuary Art and Ecology competition is soon to open for artist’s submissions. It is the only contemporary art prize with ecology at its core.

Following the success of last year’s competition – won by Mo Stewart with second place Roma Anderson and merit winners Toni Hartill and Briana Woolliams; Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick has announced the 2020 Estuary Art and Ecology Prize. Formosa Golf Club sold T

he NZ Super Fund and parties associated with Russell Property Group have agreed to buy a significant waterfront land holding in Beachlands which includes the Formosa Golf Course.

The partnership, Beachlands South LP, will be a separate venture to the limited partnership NZ Hotel Holdings Asset LP established last year to acquire hotel assets.

The acquisition comprises around 250 hectares and consolidates the Formosa Golf Course land (170.5 hectares at 110 Jack Lachlan Drive), as well as a property of 80 hectares at 620 Whitford-Maraetai Road.

The Whitford-Maraetai Road site is owned by Pipers Limited Partnership, an associate of Russell Property Group and its investment partners.

NZ Super Fund’s head of direct investments Will Goodwin says, “The new venture provides the fund with exposure to an asset class that it has been evaluating and exploring for some time. This investment creates a high-quality land holding that we will look to add value to over time.

“We are a long-term investor and this acquisition signals our confidence in Auckland’s future growth and commitment to the region. In time we will engage with the community and Auckland Council about what kind of high-quality masterplan and associated infrastructure improvement could work for the area.”

Russell Property Group managing director Brett Russell says the partnership has enabled the consolidation of a strategic waterfront site in Auckland that allows for a considered, long-term plan for the benefit of the Beachlands area and Auckland as a whole. Russell Property Group will manage the land and continue to operate the Formosa Golf Club for the foreseeable future while the partnership considers future options.

“Whilst there have been a number of proposed development concepts over the years, no definitive plans are currently in place and any future plans would be developed in close consultation with the local community, Auckland Council and all stakeholders,” Russell says.

State of the Gulf Report 2020 I have taken great interest in the state of our gulf over the last 15 years, in particular our shellfish population, and have been involved in the community monitoring programme at Cockle Bay. It is disappointing that the data generated by this programme has not been analysed since 2015 and no community monitoring at Cockle Bay for many years.

The cockle population at Cockle Bay has decreased by 72 per cent over five years despite a seasonal closure.

Results from the 2019 MPI survey showed an increase in total cockle numbers but a continuing decline in larger cockles.

We are now waiting on a decision from the minister following a survey carried out last month due to pressure from the local community to take further measures to stop this decline.

Cockle Bay is under extreme harvesting pressure during its open season and only a total closure will prevent the decline and allow this precious resource to rebuild.

If the IRD does not want to accept legal tender, then I will consider myself to have been released from any further obligation to the IRD. I suspect however, that my cheques will continue to be accepted.

There’s still a space for cheques Regarding your poll (times. co.nz), I request that you have a re-think (use of cheques in the 21st Century).

Cheques are required upon occasion for clubs and groups where two people have to be signatories to ensure that there is no theft of club funds, and to ensure accountability as if only one person has control that is when problems ensue.

Two signatories is a good protection of club funds. Is there an electronic way around this yet?

Please have a re-think for when enduring power of attorney exists and there may be two people e.g. children that have to both sign for any payments from the parents’ account under the power of attorney, and one may be in North Island and one may live in the South.

They can mail a cheque for each to sign and then post off to pay a bill but how does this work in the electronic world?

So all I respectfully ask is to have a re-think. Actually not all sizes fit all and not all circumstances work in the ‘e-world’.

and cheques may need to be discouraged but I ask, please, for the banks to come up with a way to address issues of payments for clubs and societies to avoid fraud and embezzlement, and for powers of attorney, and when signatories live apart.

Can there be a two-person pin system created on line?

Banks need to come to the party to create a new way of payment for when two party signatories are required.

Some clubs may even need three signatures.

There are always two sides to every story, and it is always good to report from both sides in order to get an unbiased account, and for people to draw their own conclusions on the best way forward based on the merits of each option available.

I could not complete your poll as there was not a box to click for more work by banks needed to address this issue.

Yes I agree in principle it is high time for banks to get rid of cheques but before they do, they need to come up with a solution for all their customers so that none are inconvenienced.

Many elderly do not have

emails, or internet and have paid by cheque all their lives.

We need to respect these people and not bully them to doing something that they may not feel comfortable with and be completely overwhelmed by.

Some elderly ask their carers to pay their bills etc online, and this can again create an area where fraud and embezzlement can occur as they can transfer funds out without the accountholders’ knowledge.

Again, a two-person, two-pin system should be required to avoid any potential pitfalls for the vulnerable in our society to protect them from any potential ill-will or nefarious deeds by those with the power to act in this manner.

I challenge you to find a solution to the above situation without cheques in this modern age!

Banks need to get on board with new multi-approval requirements for electronic payments.

Howick’s philanthropists - Hugh and Elisa Gilmour As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be.

The countdown began at the 170th in 2017 Both Hugh and Elisa Gilmour inherited substantial fortunes which they used in and for the Howick community.

Hugh Kerr Gilmour JP lived from 1842 to 1917. His father was a major tobacco merchant in Scotland. Mrs. Elisa Gilmour (born 1855 - died 1952) was the daughter of one of Scotland’s largest carpet manufacturers. They left Scotland in 1881 for New Zealand.

Soon after arriving in Howick they bought Shamrock Cottage in Selwyn Road and established a brush-ware factory next-door in 1884.

Hugh bought a farm in the Waikato and established a timber mill in Picton Street, Howick.

It had a brick chimney over 21 metres high for its steam engines.

In 1888 he started the successful Howick Band of Hope temperance group and was chairman of the Howick School committee.

Their eldest son was a Wesleyan minister.

In 1894 the Gilmours built a large home above Howick Beach - Ingledell in Granger Road which they sold to the Catholic Church in 1925 for an orphanage and convent, which burned down in 1929.

Hugh Gilmour was chairman of the Howick Motor Bus Company in 1904, and with several other Howick businessmen bought a large Milner-Daimler, 20 horsepower bus.

Its inaugural trip to Howick was followed by a grand luncheon and watched by nearly everyone in Howick including school pupils who had the day off school. The streets of Howick were decorated with flags and evergreen foliage. It only took 80 minutes to return to Auckland. But the service only lasted a few months as reliable Crawford Horse-buses had to pull the heavy motor-bus out of the Pakuranga swamp pot-holes.

In 1900 the Gilmours built another substantial homestead called The Cliffs. It had nine large rooms, five fireplaces and three acres of garden overlooking Howick Beach. The driveway to the homestead later became residential streets, called Island View Terrace and Rangitoto View Road.

Three parlour maids worked in the homestead and received meals and a bed, but no wages which was “normal” at that time.

The homestead was the headquarters of the first New Zealand

full-length silent film The Making of New Zealand in 1921. Howick School closed during filming and many Howick residents took part in the film.

In 1907 Hugh built the Howick Bowling and Croquet greens in Uxbridge Road, but it was unprofitable so he leased then sold it at a very low price to the Howick Bowling and Croquet Club.

He also built Uxbridge Presbyterian Church then donated it to the Church. Mrs Gilmour was superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School and was active in the Women’s Union.

Hugh had interests in drapery and printing works in Auckland.

In their retirement they had a special wing built onto the large wooden Marine Hotel but soon after electricity arrived, it burned down. Mrs Gilmour was a foundation member of the Howick Beautifying Society with William Green and Miss EM Nixon. The Gilmours are remembered for all their good works for the citizens of Howick.

Opinion: Big nights on the E(sports) coming in wake of COVID-19 A

s Covid-19 takes hold across the globe, mass sports events are being subjected to cancellations, or players plying their trade in front of empty stadia.

Local Australasian competitions including Super Rugby, NRL, are in state of flux and the ChappellHadlee cricket series was been canned after initially playing in an empty SCG. TV sport producers are scrambling to fill content in prime-time weekend slots abundant at this time of year due to summer to winter code crossovers and the conclusion of high-profile competitions like the English Premier League (EPL) and the NBA. Fortunately, broadcasters such as Sky have vast archives of past events, and the climate can be tempered by replays of feel-good sporting nostalgia. How long that option is viable to the fickle viewing public is debatable.

Sports radio stations are also up a certain creek without a certain instrument, as shows dedicated to either live commentary or talking about recently-concluded games will become increasingly bereft of topics. Some holes can be plugged by reverting to long periods of talkback, but this can quickly become

In light of this, the multibilliondollar e-sports industry has been handed a golden opportunity to capitalise on the absence of content.

Legendary ironman triathlete Cameron Brown wants to continue racing until he is 50!

Brown, 47, from Dannemora, made the comment after a creditable sixth place in Ironman New Zealand on March 7. He has won Ironman NZ 12 times.

He was positive about his finish given that his training was curtailed after an injury.

“It’s pretty good considering I had seven weeks off running after Ironman Busselton with a torn calf,” said Brown.

“I only had five to six weeks of running which is my strength so I didn’t have the base endurance in me so I’m happy with how I got through it.”

He considered it “not bad going” with his finishing the swim, bike, run in 8 hours 14 minutes just 3 months shy of his 48th birthday.

First place went to English pro triathlete Joe Skipper in a time of 7:54:17. Second was Kiwi Mike Phillips in 8:01:27 and third place went to another Kiwi Braden Currie who finished in 8:04:36.
