SFO files criminal charges in National Party donations case T
he Serious Fraud Office has filed criminal charges against four people in relation to donations paid into a National Party electorate bank account. Last year police referred Botany MP Jami-Lee Rossâ complaint about Nationalâs election donations to the Serious Fraud Office. Ross, who was kicked out of the National Party in 2018, lodged a
complaint with police in the same year. A police statement last March said: âPolice have referred to the Serious Fraud Office a complaint received in October (2018) in relation to the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act. âThe complaint has been referred to the SFO as they hold the appropriate mandate to look further into
matters raised by the investigation to date.â In a statement last week from National Party leader Simon Bridges, he said neither he nor the National Party has been charged following an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office. âI have always maintained I had nothing to do with the donations. As I have always said, the allega-
tions against both myself and the party were baseless and false,â said Bridges.. âThis was always just a vendetta by a disgruntled former MP.â âI have always been confident in the way the Party receives and declares donations,â said general manager Greg Hamilton. âWe are happy to put this matter behind us and will not be making
any other comment.â The defendants are scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on February 25. The Serious Fraud Office will not make any further comment until any name suppression issues have been dealt with. Ross, now an independent MP for Botany, has been approached for comment.
