oters seemed to have turned their backs on this year’s local elections. Voting returns for Local Elections 2019 in the Howick Ward’s three Subdivisions – Botany, Howick and Pakuranga – are only showing around half of voters having bothered to cast their votes. With voting for the local elections closing in a little over a week – midday on October 12 - the number of document returns as of Monday were dismal. Auckland council figures as of yesterday showed just 12.5 per cent of voting documents had been returned in the Botany Subdivision compared to 20.2 per cent as at October 3 at the last local elections in 2016. In Howick for these elections 14.3 per cent of returns had been recorded yesterday compared to 22.7 per cent as at October 3, 2016. And in
Pakuranga 13.1 per cent of votes had been returned yesterday compared to 21.6 per cent on October 3, 2016. In 2016, final results showed 36.9 per cent cast votes in the Botany Subdivision, 43.1 per cent in Howick and 40.7 per cent in Pakuranga. The Auckland total was 38.54 per cent. Voting closes at midday on October 12, but voters now have less than a week to post their ballot papers if they want to make the postal deadline. People who aren’t enrolled, or haven’t their received their voting papers, can still cast a special vote. Auckland Council General Manager Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet is urging voters to act now. “We’re asking all Aucklanders to think about the role local government plays in their lives, have their say and be a voter,” Delbet told the Times. “We’re working to provide Auck-
landers with more ways to vote, including our One Stop Shop programme, which allows people to enrol and vote at the same time.” These can be cast at five Auckland libraries, nine council service centres, by calling the Electoral Office on 0800 922 822, or by visiting a One Stop Shop. Dozens of One Stop Shops will pop up over the election period at places like malls, universities, marae and markets. People who are already enrolled can also drop their voting papers at a One Stop Shop, rather than putting them in a post box. A full list of One Stop Shop times, dates and locations is available on the elections website, voteauckland. co.nz. The Vote Friday initiative will provide at least 35,000 Aucklanders the opportunity to vote at work. “Businesses are encouraged to support local
democracy by giving their staff 30 minutes to fill out their voting papers on Friday 4 October,” Delbet said. Our elections website, voteauckland.co.nz, is an excellent resource for voters. People can type their address into the website to find out more about the candidates in their ward and local board area.

Petition launched to save MIT N
ational MP’s Simeon Brown and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi have launched a petition to help save Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) from the Government’s “radical proposal” to merge all polytechs across New Zealand into one nationwide megapolytechnic. Under the Government’s proposals, every aspect of the vocational education sector is under attack,
they said in a media statement.. “Apprentices are being sent back to polytechnics, polytechnics are being amalgamated into legacy campuses, jobs are being lost, cash and community assets will be centrally controlled, and regional autonomy is being stripped away,” they said. “What this means locally is that MIT will be merged into one nationwide mega-polytech which will
make decisions on local skills needs, what courses are available locally and local apprenticeship training. The reforms will also mean that cash reserves held by MIT will be snatched up by the new mega-polytechnic which will then decide how these funds are used in our region, they said. “These changes will be disastrous for regional education and apprenticeships however the Government
is pushing ahead with ideology over what is best for students and regional New Zealand.” They continued: “We are launching a petition which urges the Government to not go ahead with merging MIT into the nationwide mega-polytech and to retain local decision making and assets in the community. We urge locals to sign this petition and stand with National as
we seek to ensure we retain local autonomy so that MIT can make decisions for our regional skill needs. Stop wasting your food The issue of food waste was brought to the attention of young Kiwis through a publicity stunt organised by AUT students. AUT University students who host the radio station Static FM – including Bethany Cogger, 21, a former Howick College student - held a publicity stunt on Tuesday to raise awareness about food waste with young New Zealanders. The stunt was in partnership with Love Food Hate Waste. Wanted posters that dotted the halls of the university requested onlookers to save the humansized vegetables and fruits running around the city campus from going to ‘waste’. As the large personified bean, carrot and banana characters asked for help around campus, people were able to take a photo with them for a chance to win an eco prize pack sponsored by Love Food Hate Waste, Good For and The Eco Society. This was in line with Love Food Hate Waste’s #savethecarrot, #savethebean and #savethebanana campaign
which ran throughout September. According to the Love Food Hate Waste national food waste prevention study, those aged 16-24 are more commonly food wasters compared to other age groups. “We felt the need to take initiative by utilising our platform to raise awareness around the environmental impact of food wastage because we wanted to educate younger generations who will be the most affected by climate change’’, says Bethany, a spokesperson from Static FM. “Kiwis throw away 157,389 tonnes of food each year which releases methane into the air, a harmful greenhouse gas. Last week the Government announced they will be scrapping the decile system and replacing it with a new funding model. National welcomes this change as it was something we committed to at the last election but which was stalled when Labour took power. We originally announced these changes in 2017 with what we called a Risk Index, and the government has essentially copied the details while changing the name to the Equity Index. The new system will mean that school funding is calculated using a range of factors, taking into account the backgrounds of the students attending the school
rather than the broad socioeconomic status of each school’s surrounding suburbs. This is a much fairer way of funding schools and will mean the decile ratings are removed. These ratings have often proved to be more discriminatory than helpful when it comes to allocating resources amongst schools, so their removal is much needed. In Pakuranga, I have heard from teachers and principals who were concerned that the generally higher decile ratings our schools have could disadvantage students who needed extra help, simply because they lived here. A school’s location does not solely determine the challenges it faces and a system
cars, but ensuring that every link in the business chain focuses on putting the customer first. With this at the forefront of our new expansion, we have created positive and unique enhancements at each and every touch point of the customer journey with both BMW and MINI.”

The actual detail in the policy remains to be seen and will be critical to its success. When National announced our policy in 2017, we committed that no school would be worse off. I will be closely watching the development of this policy and how it will impact schools in the Pakuranga Electorate and will consult with our local educators to ensure their views on these changes are considered. Cash no longer king By JIM BIRCHALL On a recent (and too frequent) visit to the drivethru of a certain restaurant that boasts a Southern Colonel as a spokesman, I was confronted by an eftpos machine thrust into my face by a staff member immediately after ordering. When I produced cash from my wallet instead, she was as surprised as anything that I chose to shun electronic payment and rely on old Queen Elizabeth. “Wow, no-one pays with cash anymore,” she said effusively. Although I am as familiar as the next person with eftpos, and being old enough to remember when it was introduced into New Zealand’s guinea pig trial market of the late 1980s, I was taken aback by her remarks and set about investigating this modern stigma. I spent a week quizzing various petroleum transfer technicians and drive-thru staff about the frequency and demographic of people who still pay in cash. The movement towards a fully cash-less society is well on the road to reality and more and more retailers are embracing Bitcoin and digital wallet options such as Apple Pay. We approached NZX-listed Restaurant Brands, which operates and owns the master franchising rights for the Carl’s Jr, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell brands in New Zealand, for comment. Chief marketing officer Geraldine Oldham had this to say, “The majority of our customers now pay using a card and we no longer accept cash payment for Pizza Hut delivery.” Local retailers we approached echoed that around 30 per cent of people still use the folded gold, predominantly older Caucasian people and shoppers of Asian descent. The Times took to Picton Street for an unscientific poll. Dennis Hazeleton, who is in his 50s said his spending was mostly restricted to credit cards, although he took “a couple of hundred bucks” a week out of an ATM as “walking around money”. Dinesh Joe (41) said he still used cash and preferred the “feel of it in the wallet”, while Sarah Douglass (23) said she never used cash, and “felt unsafe” with it about her person.

nachronistic eyesores. That’s how a lot of people might describe the seemingly never-ending cache of election hoardings which have gone up around east Auckland in recent weeks. But, despite their unwavering repetition, they don’t do a great job of telling you anything about the candidates — and we all realise it. Research by Auckland Council following the last local elections found that one in four people who didn’t vote said they didn’t know enough about the candidates running in their community. That’s why the Howick Youth Council’s recent candidate forums have sought to provide clarity in the local board races; the people that could shape the future of East Auckland. The forums covered all three subdivisions within the Howick Local Board and every candidate running was invited. Thankfully, most turned up. As one would expect from a youth forum, questions about youth engagement were a consistent thread, but so too were countless nagging
questions about transport, rates, housing and climate change. Issues affecting all east Aucklanders were debated on their own significance and were done so in a highly inquisitive and interactive manner. Candidates were encouraged to share the actions they planned to take to address each topic. Also woven throughout every subdivision’s event was a consistent commitment to audience engagement. Audience members answered poll questions via their smartphones. The direction of the forums were guided by the audience’s opinions. By the end of the forums, an average of 82 per cent of audience members participating live had changed their opinions about which candidates they would vote for. Youth council member Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg, who organised the local board debates, said the event’s focus was to engage youth and the wider community with local politics. “There are over 20,000 peo-

ple under the age of 25 in the Howick Local Board area. We wanted to make sure they, as well as the rest of the community, were empowered to make informed decisions through these forums,” she said. “Local board has got a vital part to play in providing local leadership and to advocate on our community’s behalf. So, it’s really important we get a better understanding of who we’re voting for.” The technology-driven aspects of the forums have been so successful that other local community groups have made enquiries and shown interest in integrating interactive software into their candidate forums too. All three of the candidate forums were live-streamed and full recordings of the events can be viewed on the Youth Council’s Facebook page.
The online news site, The Spinoff, has launched Policy Local where people can compare the policies of candidates running for Mayor, Council, Local Board and District Health Board by simply typing in your address. That’s at policylocal.nz. Auckland Council has put together a similar online tool on the Vote Auckland website where people can find out who they can vote for based on their address. The Times has also published candidates’ statements every week, and each voting pack comes with a booklet with remarks from each candidate. With the list of excuses to not vote well and truly run dry, and so many resources available to you without leaving your door, there’s never been a better time to exercise your democratic right to vote. Redden carving a great career path P
akuranga’s Cherise Redden is only in her second year of her Competenz Butchery apprenticeship, but that hasn’t stopped her from taking out the 2019 Retail Meat New Zealand Apprentice of the Year award. Cherise works at Countdown’s state-of-the-art meat and seafood processing facility in Otahuhu and says winning the award means a lot to her. “It’s recognition for something I’ve worked hard at and proves to me that I am good enough, and I’m proud of the fact that I am consistently doing well as a female in a male dominated industry.” Prior to starting her apprenticeship, Cherise spent 10 years as a knife hand and says it was a conversation with Countdown retail meat senior operations manager Riki Kerekere that led her to enrol in the apprenticeship programme and pursue a career in butchery. “I had no job prospects really and Riki asked me if I’d like to

studies, Cherise’s dream is to work her way up into an upper management retail role. Her advice to school leavers? Just do it. “Sometimes you just don’t know what you want to do when you leave school and just want to have fun. I say give it a go like I did – you never know – it might end up being that one thing you never thought you’d enjoy or be good at.”
Chemical spill on Cryers Road Emergency services were called to a chemical spill on Cryers Road, East Tamaki at 12:49 on Tuesday. According to a Fire and Emergency spokesperson,
four fire appliances and one hazmat unit responded and were at the scene for five hours. Fire crews worked alongside police to ensure a safe cordon
was in place. Fire crews also assisted with the treatment of one person who was decontaminated and then taken to hospital by ambulance.

Unfortunately, over the last two months there has been a spike in petty criminal activity in the Howick Village. Car break-ins, business theft and intimidating behavior on the street. The HVA has been working closely with the police to help solve these crimes and arrest the perpetrators. It should be stressed that we believe this criminal activity is isolated to one or two individuals and a group of youths. To put a halt to this activity it is imperative that we all remain vigilant and work closely with the police. If you witness criminal and/or intimidating behaviour, please contact the police with your observations. It is important for you to note as much information on those you believe are committing the crimes, e.g gender, height, weight, build, ethnicity, clothing worn, and of course full details of what you saw happen. Please remember to ring “111” if a crime is taking place and “105” if the crime has happened and you have information that will assist police. ugenie Sage, the Minister of Conservation and Land Information, has been spreading the message of conservation with a local school. She recently visited Cockle Bay School in conjunction with Squawk Squad’s Digital Environmental Education Programme. Squawk Squad is a social enterprise that combines technology with conservation and education to help save New Zealand’s native birds. It allows New Zealanders to take part in a predator-free New Zealand by sponsoring high-tech traps towards conservation projects around the country. The programme is now in its third year, and the students of Cockle Bay School have embraced its principles which aim to educate tamariki on New Zealand’s environmental issues such as pest and predator eradication, conservation of New Zealand Birds of Prey and the

here was a big buzz as the second phase of the Botany Town Centre $78m refurbishment was unveiled recently. Plenty of stakeholders were excited about the opening as 15 months later, the precinct connecting Town Centre Drive to New World supermarket, is now weatherproof with laminated arches and a modern architectural look. The traditional old space has been transformed to offer an
alternative experience for shoppers with shops and cafes wearing a well designed, vibrant look. “It’s been two years of construction and destruction to create a great products and experiences,” said Mark Kirkland, managing director AMP Capital, at the opening, referring to both phase one and two of the refurbishment. A combination of landscape architecture, engineering and design skills have created a green

82 teams and one highly debated cup

hey were determined to win the cup this year even if it meant persuasively arguing their way to the top after debating with more than 80 teams. Ormiston Senior College Year 12 students, Ryan Iglesia, Solana Carpenter and Akira Maharaj can’t believe they are the winners of the Auckland Schools Debating senior Auckland grade as they cleverly won the battle of words, cutting the competition from 82 to 16 teams which was finally slashed down to just two. “We try to think of everything the other team would say and then
work on how to counter it,” says Solana. “We’ve grown a lot as a team and now I find it’s so much easier for us to understand the points of clash.” Having debated as a team for around five years, they say they are very comfortable with each other, enough to criticise one another when they think they have not done well enough. Seventeen-year-old Ryan says that last year they were so close to winning but lost the final round. “We were just one debate away. This year we were very determined to win the cup. We prepared ourselves by enrolling for the debating acceleration programme at Auck-
land University and also participated at a debating tournament in Lynfield.” As luck would have it, the motion for the final round was: ‘This house regrets schools teaching the idea that effort and participation is more important than winning’. “It was tough as we had to agree to the motion,” says Ryan. Another time they put all their oratory and analytical skills to test was when they had to negate the motion: ‘Implementing compulsory vaccine regulation’. “It’s something we don’t personally agree with but had to argue otherwise, which wasn’t easy at all,” says Akira.

Tanner, Ye win National holocaust essay competitions Two of the three writers who have been honoured for their moving compositions on the Holocaust, in the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand’s annual Paul Seideman Composition competition, are from east Auckland. The winner of the inaugural Year 7-8 age category is Year 8 student Rosetta Tanner from Somerville Intermediate School. Rosetta wrote about Irena Sendler, the Polish nurse and social worker who smuggled more than 2000 children out of the Warsaw ghetto. Rosetta said researching Irena’s story “made me realise it is simple courageous acts that make someone a hero”. Orlando Ye, a Year 9 student at Botany Downs Secondary College, won the Year 9-10 category, writing about how Holocaust survivors “found it very hard to return home” and that many chose to immigrate to countries around the world, including New Zealand. Funded and supported by Holocaust survivor Paul Seideman, this year’s competition introduced a new junior age category for students in Year 7-8. Chris Harris, chief executive officer of the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, visited the winners at their respective schools to break the good news to them. Rosetta and Orlando will attend the United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day at Makara Cemetery in Wellington on January 27 and will read their winning compositions before an audience of distinguished guests at the Parliamentary reception.

or someone who had never worked out, Mary Piggins can’t believe that she is the lead in the visually stunning production Dawn. It is a collaboration with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) and The Dust Palace, best described as a ballet in the sky. It’s surreal, a magical escape to another world is how the 17-year-old Howick College student describes her experience at the circus theatre company The Dust Palace. She is surprised by the core strength and flexibility she’s developed in the last couple of years. “Till three years ago I had never done gymnastics or dancing or any kind of exercise. And now I am obsessed with it. I can’t believe how much strength I have developed. “The first six months were tough but then onwards it’s only been fun,” Mary admits. She believes it has helped her use different parts of her brain as she developed body awareness, self discipline and confidence to perform in front of an audience. “The hardest thing is to have a grip and hold on to the silk rope. “It needs so much strength, stamina and coordination to stay up in the air. expression.” She is also part of HighJinx, the circus performance youth company that gives students an opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Mary gives credit to Eve Gordon and Mike Edward, the people behind the Dust Palace for having scripted Dawn which showcases cirque artistry. After a sell-out, breathtaking show Midnight, this collaboration between APO and The Dust Palace, will tell their enchanting story around and above the orchestra. Handel’s beautiful Sarabande, Respighi’s portrait of The Nightingale and arguably the most famous sunrise ever
set to music, Grieg’s shimmering Morning Mood from Peer Gynt, are just a few of the beautiful and sometimes quirky classics the orchestra will perform. The repertoire also includes two pieces by highly-regarded New Zealand composer Eve de Castro-Robinson; Aurora and an excerpt from Releasing the Angel. The audience can expect giant puppets and performers flying through the sky with more surprises thrown in. To be hosted on Friday October 11 at 8pm and on Saturday October 12 at 2pm, Aotea Centre, Mary says she is very excited about her first professional debut.

Pure greed
David Jans of Box Property Ltd can stop trying to fool everybody in Cockle Bay, Howick and Auckland (Times, September 26). There is only one driver for him to push through his development of 71 residential units on Sandspit Road, and that is pure greed. Of course he claims that his project was “supported” by a number of experienced town planners and urban designers from both private and public council. The first category will support whoever pays their bill and the second are faceless, no-skin-inthe-game process followers, who don’t care nor have any responsibility or accountability, as this is not happening in their back yard and if the boxes are ticked, who cares? That those people don’t object, doesn’t mean they support either actually so to claim this support is a bit rich I think. I’d actually like to know who the only sensible urban designer was in council, who had a conscience and had the backbone to voice his opposition. I bet he or she has a link to the Cockle Bay area or community, as opposed to the ticket clippers and tick-box-tickers to allegedly ‘support’ this idea! No, the actual truth is that David Jans of Box Property Ltd is after making a quick buck and seeing a handsome return in his investment. Nothing more, nothing less. For argument’s sake he likely has paid $5 million for the land (probably less, but I’m feeling generous) and developing/building the complex would set him back another $15m or so (71 x, on average, 85m2 x $2.5K/m2; you can build apartments pretty efficiently). At first glance, that is nothing to be sneezed at - a $20m investment. But selling these units will easily bring in 71 x $500K = $35m at minimum, but likely quite a bit more and then the true reasons for him appealing the decision is pretty obvious isn’t it? What David Jans will leave in his wake of his money-making scheme, is another 100+ vehicles parked all over the surrounding streets for which he has no place in his development, clogged sewer lines that are not dimensioned for another 200 or so residents who all use toilets, showers, washing machines and do dishes. Which means that WaterCare will need to react by opening up the surrounding streets for months on end to upgrade their assets raising rates for all Auck-
Sandspit Road apartment development Box Properties, what are you thinking (Times, September 26)? You can hardly be surprised that council refused your application for consent to construct a large apartment complex on Single House Zone sites in Sandspit Road and Reydon Place, directly opposite Howick College and adjacent to Cockle Bay Primary School. All sites with a combined total of 6245m2 in the application are covered by a Single House Zone designation in the new Auckland Unitary Plan. A zone which provides for, as of right on the site, the construction of nine town houses including right of way access to rear sites. An application to build 71 apartments in a five level complex, including a 110 two level basement carpark plus a coffee shop is not consistent with the objectives, policies and provisions for the Single House Zone in the Unitary landers to finance their projects. Vector will need to put in another roadside switchbox, probably right in front of a neighbour’s property. It also creates, due to all those extra parked cars, more congestion and unsafe situations during surrounding school drop off and pick up times. So please Mr Jans, stop pretending that you are the great saviour and hero who is providing affordable opportunities for first home buyers and who is merely and humbly plugging the gap in the shortfall of houses available, all out of the kindness
Plan and was ultimately assessed by the council as a non-complying activity, with consent refused. Hardly a surprising outcome, providing little, if any, justification for an appeal to the Environment Court against the council’s decision. An appeal which will cost ratepayers, should Council choose to defend their decision, in excess of $100,000. Not to overlook similar costs for the local residents if they wish to join proceedings. A further, considerable additional cost to them after successfully opposing the application at council level. Should the council’s decision be overturned by the Court, Auckland residents and ratepayers will likely conclude that wealthy developers with deep pockets can deny the Auckland public their rights to natural justice. Name withheld Mellons Bay of your heart. You are only after one thing, and that is cold, hard dollars, regardless of the consequences. There is a place for large scale developments, but that place is certainly not here in Cockle Bay. Sell up these properties and buy land in Te Kauwhata; that is earmarked for 5000 houses under the Waikato growth plan, and develop your ideas there, where there is space and where the supporting infrastructure can be provided as it’s not in place yet. hen the first settlers arrived in Howick, many were disappointed at the treeless rolling hills with only native grasses and low scrub. Many planted quick-growing Australian gum trees or pine trees for shelter from wind and for firewood. It was Governor Grey’s policy that soldier-settler Fencibles would be labourers for better-off farmers of Pakuranga and women would be domestic servants. But these “peasant labourers” wanted a better life than back home .They could see opportunities by buying five acre allotments to supplement their military pensions. Most Fencibles were worn out old soldiers who initially only grew cabbages and potatoes for their family. Initially many of the Pakuranga farm blocks were bought by those with capital, “land sharks” buying land but
not farming it, only to sell it a few years later for substantial profits. They did not need farm labourers. Albin Martin said most European settlers had one ambition” to make money fast and add field to field”. In 1851 an Auckland newspaper recorded “the banks of the Tamaki teaming with every variety of cereal wealth divided and subdivided into golden wheat enclosures, fields of brilliant barley, heavy oats, and lush paddocks of rank and verdant clover”. It was usual to take the sacks of grain to the miller such as Partington’s Windmill in Symonds Street, Auckland. The miller kept half the flour and the farmer sold his half to grocers and bakeries. Captain Montressor Smith, who owned today’s Bell House, planted potatoes on his 90 acre farm with an excellent crop. The next year caterpillars ate his entire crop. Many from Howick joined the Acclimatization Society who imported blackbirds, thrushes, rooks,

starlings and finches. They ate the caterpillars but some thought the bird could eat ripening grain crops. A few well-to-do farmers gave their workers meals and a bed in the barn, but no wages. Farm workers were also expected to attend church on Sunday mornings with their farmer employer. The five acre Fencibles “farms” initially sent their wheat, oats, potatoes, cheese, butter, poultry and fruit to the Auckland markets from around Howick to supplement the Maori suppliers. Pakuranga land was relatively cheap at a pound an acre in the 1850s and five pounds an acre in the 1860s. Once the swingbridge over the Tamaki River opened in 1865, farmers could deliver their produce more efficiently. The mechanical reaper and binder replaced sickle or scythes and threshing machines replaced hand-flailing. Pakuranga became “the granary of Auckland”. With good soils and a warm

climate, many Pakuranga farmers established orchards as well as growing cereal crops. John Udy had a substantial apple orchard in Udy’s Road and alongside the Tamaki River and in the 1880s also supplied peaches, pears, quinces, plums, damsons, cherries and apricots. His apple crops were so productive that he dried over a ton in the warm sunshine. He also sold more than 200 gallons of Pakuranga cider. Pakuranga once rivalled Henderson for the quality and range of seasonal fresh fruit. Today, all this productive land is now housing and we rely on most fresh produce from further afield like Pukekohe. ■■ Alan La Roche is a local historian.

HPCC season gets underway Champion club Howick Pakuranga looking to go one better in 2019/20 season By JIM BIRCHALL Premier cricket gets underway in just under three weeks’ time with the Jeff Crowe Cup kicking things off. Looking to get their hands on the trophy will be the Howick Pakuranga Premier side, who start their campaign at home on October 19 against Birkenhead. Having already claimed the Hedley Howarth two-day championship and the T20 prize, they will be looking to add the 50 over title to their bulging trophy cabinet. This year Howick Pakuranga – known as the Alpacas – is helmed by a new captain in Andrew Morrison and coached by veteran Alan Hunt. The Times caught up with coach Hunt and started by asking about any personnel changes in the first XI over the winter? “Last year’s squad is largely intact, with the exception being Cam Neal (who is) transferring to Parnell. Liam Winn has concluded his studies at Lincoln University and joins the squad. Oliver Blandford, an all rounder,
provides some additional depth and follows his brother Matt to New Zealand, from the UK, for the summer. Veteran Ace’s all-rounder Donovan Grobbelaar is available all season, and Hunt says Black Cap stars Glenn Phillips, Mitchell McClenaghan and Colin Munro may be included during a small window in December. The seamer ranks are stacked, with Aces’ pacemen Matt McEwan, Jamie Brown, and Danru Ferns,to pitch up as Auckland commitments allow. The team also has a stream of talented youngsters on the books. Adam Jones , Daniel Young , Kieren Mackenzie , Phillips , Taine Jolley & Brandan Laurenzi are all 22 or younger, which bodes well for the depth within the club and their future solidity. This theme is reflected in the club’s overall playing numbers with an approximate membership of 800 across the board, including a ten per cent rise in juniors. Birkenhead CC are first-up opponents, clashing on home ground at Lloyd Elsmore Park on October 19.
Botany needs a park and ride – MP T
he full potential of two major public transport initiatives in East Auckland will only be realised if a park and ride facility is established in the area. That’s the view of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who’s pushing for a park and ride to be created as part of the Eastern Busway and the proposed Botany to Auckland Airport rapid transit project. The Botany to Airport busway will travel via Manukau and is being led by Auckland Transport (AT). Ross says he strongly supports the project but that insufficient consideration has been given by officials to the parking needs of passengers who would use the service and the Eastern Busway. “We aren’t going to get commuters out of their vehicles and onto public transport unless they have access to handy and affordable car parking. That’s why there needs to be a park and ride facility in Botany. There is considerable support for such a facility being established in the area.” Ross says he’s written to Transport Minister Phil Twyford to draw his attention to a property in Botany that he believes could serve as a prime spot for the busway interchange, a park and ride facility and an appropriate commercial or residential development. He’s also pushing for the Botany busway to run along Te Irirangi Drive and eventually be connected to the Eastern Busway.

Ross says he’s used his voice in the Parliament to question Minister Twyford several times this year about progress being made on the project. He says using Te Irirangi Drive as a rapid transit corridor will benefit local public transport users and alleviate congestion by getting people out of cars and onto buses. “Reducing the appalling traffic congestion on our local roads is one of my main priorities. “I’ve talked to thousands of locals on their doorsteps this year and the most common issue people raise is the lack of public transport options in East Auckland. “East Auckland has been left behind when it comes to public transport for too long.” A new public transport interchange is being built in Puhinui as an “early deliverable” of the Botany

to Airport busway. The interchange will be open in 2021 and will connect buses and rail to Manukau and the Airport, which is rapidly becoming one of Auckland’s major employment hubs. Auckland Transport said it is still investigating options, and a range of matters for Botany Station. This includes the future bus network, site for the station, integration with commercial and residential development – as well as opportunities for improved access from park and ride facilities and active modes. Auckland Transport anticipates completing the business case in early 2020. This will inform the consenting phase of the project and any Notices of Requirement (NoR). Public consultation and engagement on the Airport to Botany Rapid Transit project will take place later this year.
Being smart about using iPhones By FARIDA MASTER While most seniors would love to embrace technology, many struggle to connect with their iPhones. Aman Varma, a former Pakuranga College student, understands that it is not unusual for kids his age to be technology junkies—even as there exists a yawning gap between an iPhone generation and seniors trying to cope with fast-paced technology to keep up with their grandchildren and the rest of world. Wanting to help, the computer science major at the University of Auckland has been working on an iPhone guide for the last four years. The iGuide comes with step-bystep instructions and screenshots designed to help the elderly build confidence to use iPhone. In 2015, the Times published an article on Aman with a group of students taking second place in the regional finals of the Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. The Year 13 team at Pakuranga College was involved the idea of a smartphone guide for seniors. After the article was published in the Times the young business enterprise group received a number of queries from individuals and retirement villages showing a keen interest in the guide. “We found a real disconnect between seniors and technology and decided to create viable solutions for this problem,” says Aman. “After I finished college, I decided to continue writing the book with the hope that someday senior citizens will benefit out of it. I checked with my team mates if they were ok with

me taking the project to the next level and they were fine it. ” The iGuide is designed with the goal of empowering senior citizens by helping them confidently utilise their iPhones. It covers 10 essential iPhone apps including settings, contacts, messages, phone, mail (email), Safari (internet), and how to use the camera, sharing photos and making an album, using the App Store to download apps and more. Aman, who has invested a lot into the book, says is has been a huge learning curve in terms of the business aspect of publishing. Japan puts the cat amongst the pigeons M
uch as we admired Japan’s magnificent 19-12 Rugby World Cup win against Ireland on Sunday, it has put the cat among the pigeons with the All Blacks likely to face the 2018 Six Nations champion Irish in the quarter-finals. Before that upset we thought New Zealand’s most likely quarter-final opponent would be Scotland who Ireland had thrashed. Having beaten the All Blacks twice in their last three attempts, Ireland, with their strong forwards, superb defence and tactical kicking halves, will be that much tougher knowing they will need a razor sharp resolve on par with Japan’s. Like the remaining quarter-finals, it will have all the drama of a do-or-die classic. By then NZ fans can only hope their scrum improves on their brittle first-up showing against the powerful Springboks although their backs should be sharper. Meanwhile with games to come against Samoa and
Scotland, Japan are now favoured to emerge winners of Pool A with the prospect of facing South Africa in their quarter-final. That would represent a tough challenge but Japan’s former Highlanders mentors, Jamie Joseph and Tony Brown, would relish it. They will also know it would enhance their chances of becoming All Black selectors next year upon Steve Hansen’s retirement. With Scott Robertson and Ian Foster also in the mix, the competition will be fierce and will need to be if Dave Rennie becomes Australia’s head coach upon replacing Michael Cheika. Japan’s thrilling win against Ireland is almost on par with their 2015 World Cup opening win against South Africa and has given the host nation something really exciting to cheer about. So much for the old belief that Asians were inscrutable and that “east is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet”.

Both are good value but To’omua adds that little bit more thrust to the attack just as England’s George Ford does compared to Owen Farrell before the latter was moved to secondfive.

Wotton named top male rider Elim Christian College’s snowboarding team made its mark at the Secondary School Championships last week. The school has a proud track record in the sport. Noah Wotton made the finals of the slope style picking up silver in the banked slalom. He was also named top male rider for the competition. Adele Benns placed 4th place in the banked slalom and qualified 4th for the finals in the slope style and in the end took out 3rd place – a huge effort for her. The girls team claimed 3rd place overall.
