Burglary bungled

A

Beachlands burglar has been busted after a stealing spree went all wrong on Labour Day Monday.

A 25-year-old local man was pinged after the quick-thinking actions of a homeowner saw the alleged thief trapped until police arrived.

Long-time Beachlands resident and motoring magazine publisher Alistair Davidson left his Bell Road home for just 30 minutes on Monday to pop down to the beach to photograph an $80,000 test car.

While he locked up the house, he had difficulty shutting the garage door round the side of the house so left it half open.

He returned to find tyre tracks across his lawn leading up the side of the house.

“I poked my head into the garage and there was a guy up on the bench looking through the overhead cupboards.”

After some discussion, Mr Davidson managed to pull down the garage door. “I put my foot down on it so he couldn’t get out.’

He called police.

However the alleged burglar managed to squeeze out a tiny

In the back of the burglar’s car was Mr Davidson’s $8000 Cervelo time trial bike, three tool chests, power tools, a drop saw and spare car parts.

He concedes he was foolish leaving the garage door partly open.

“There’s unfortunately a need to be a lot more security conscious,” he said.

“He kept saying my son knows (he was there collecting tools) and that he used to work with him,” Mr Davidson said.

“I kept backing off, he kept approaching.”

The alleged burglar got into his car but realised his way out was blocked by Mr Davidson’s vehicle.

He approached Mr Davidson again who by now had walked out onto the road coinciding with the arrival of four police patrol cars.

“They were there within three or four minutes,” he said.

’m writing this with only three weeks to go before I leave the Times and head for retirement.

It’s the eve of the Auckland SuperCity election after which retiring Mayor Len Brown will head for bucolic bliss in the semirural fields of Karaka. And next year Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson will take off for a Government posting in the sunny climes of Los Angeles.

It’s been great to know them both as the Times has given me the opportunity to follow the ups and downs of their political careers.

We’re all roughly the same age and blessed to be part of the ‘baby boomer’ phenomenon.

This comes with an attitude that approaching or reaching retirement age does not mean it’s the end of life as we know it, but the start of a new one.

tures. Mine is settling with my partner into a new community in the beautiful Bay of Islands.

It will be the end of a career in journalism spanning close to 50 years. Little did I know when I joined the fledgling Howick & Pakuranga Times, in 1973 that I would make a full cir-

cle and end my professional days under such an enduring masthead.

Over the past eight years I’ve witnessed the trials and triumphs of establishing a SuperCity; the early development of Ormiston, New Zealand’s first brand new town centre since Turangi was built; the birth

of a beautiful new Uxbridge Arts & Culture Centre; the determined battle to establish the Vector Wero whitewater park in Manukau; and the Times’ journey to Parliament to win the name of ‘Howick’ for the SuperCity’s newly-established south-eastern ward.

These years have also been ones of turbulent change for the Times as it takes determined strides into the digital publishing age. It’s not an easy journey for dedicated print journalists like me but, nonetheless, one we must all embrace.

I count myself extremely lucky to have spent these past eight years peeking into the fascinating lives of so many interesting and talented people, sharing the ups and the downs; also being the recipient of so much spontaneous kindness.

It’s been a joy to meet up with community stalwarts

from way back, such as Howick historian Alan La Roche, veteran actor Laurie Mills and, still regarded as the ‘mayor of Howick’, Morrin Cooper.

I’ve relished the opportunity to work with and mentor young journalists who have passed through the Times newsroom as they set out on their careers.

Newspaper publishing is about constantly meeting deadlines which requires the best of team work, something the Times excels at.

It can be worrying, satisfying and positively exhilarating – sometimes all at the same time. I’ll miss, but never forget, the dynamics of the Times team as I head into the unknowns of retirement.

To my colleagues, Times readers and each of you who have willingly given time to explain your stories to me, I wish you my best.

Community buy-in sought for park

tephanie Chamberlin and Matthew Brajkovich have a vision of turning a neglected public reserve in Cockle Bay into a special place where children can experience nature. Consequently they are calling for buyin to the idea from the local community.

For more than a year Mr Brajkovich has been asking Auckland Council for more hands-on maintenance of the Cockle Bay Domain and for funding to support a community project.

The Cockle Bay Play Centre is located at the front of the reserve in Pah Road and Mrs Chamberlin says for the past four-five years she has had a vision for ways of integrating the play centre’s activities and the greater domain area.

Council feedback so far is that it needs to see buy-in from the community before it increases its investment in the reserve.

“It’s a huge opportunity for the council and community to come together, so let’s make it happen,”

Mrs Chamberlin says. “Hopefully we can get a team together to help.”

An urgent ecological issue, Mr Brajkovich says, is the appearance of willow aphid over the past five years. The aphids are killing the willows but the dew they leave is also creating a food source for wasps, making the reserve a perfect habitat for wasps which are a threat to bees.

Some stands of kahikatea, manuka and cabbage trees are a feature of the reserve attracting

kereru, tui and moreporks.

But areas difficult for the council’s mowers to access and the slopes to a stream running below the play centre and under Pah Road are over-run with weeds.

Mrs Chamberlin would love to see chickens installed in an enclosure on the stream bank.

“It would be great to have the chickens which would keep the stream banks clear and it would be fantastic for us as the children could go hunting for eggs.”

Council streamlining starts Auckland Council’s new mayor Phil Goff has quickly taken the carving knife to operations announcing a new streamlined council committee structure designed to create a more effective and efficient decisionmaking process. He says the

new structure will result in five less formal meetings a month, up to 15 fewer reports needing to be prepared and a 25 per cent saving in staff and councillors’ time. “This is in line with my commitment to ratepayers that, as a council,

we will do more with less.”

Franklin Ward councillor Bill Cashmore will be the new deputy mayor. Three committees of the whole will be planning, chaired by Chris Darby (North Shore); finance and performance,

plants and she envisages a fenced area for a butterfly haven.

“We should also plant stinging nettle for the Red Admiral butterfly. We could provide a habitat for endangered species on the steep stream banks.

“We also have glow worms here,” she says.

Another suggestion is to provide a fish ladder in the stream for fish returning from the ocean.

“There are five whitebait species here, also longfin and shortfin eels,” Mrs Chamberlin says.

“The eels swim to Tonga and juveniles come back to the original stream their parents came from. But they are vulnerable now.”

Mrs Chamberlin and Mr Brajkovich are disappointed that the council will not replace an old cracked path leading from a bridge over the stream to the western side of the reserve.

“I sometimes come across an elderly lady who asks me why we can’t have a seat along here where she likes to sit and watch the birds,” Mr Brajkovich says.

He also asks why native tree

planting could not be extended to the path which should be made wide enough for two pushchairs.

“Maybe we could have a bike track for littlies through the trees. The back of this reserve is extremely neglected.

“Once some basic work was done we could then let nature do its job.”

They say the reserve project lends itself to allocating projects out to local schools administered under one umbrella group.

So far a couple of local trusts have shown interest in receiving a funding proposal for the reserve and donations of plants or wood for building gardens would also be welcomed.

“We are looking for buy-in or feedback on what people want and what they don’t want in the park,” Mr Brajkovich says. “But the council needs to see this buyin before it increases its involvement.”

‘They’re robbing me blind’

A

ndrew Beatson has had a gutsful. The 32-year-old butchery owner does 1213 hours daily and some weeks works seven days. His Aussie Butcher franchise – a New Zealand-owned company which sells only Kiwi meat – is a busy operation and employs nine staff including part-timers.

Any spare time Beatson has is precious and is devoted to his family. What’s getting on his wick though is a tidal wave of theft plaguing the Ti Rakau Drive store in Botany where he’s been for 10 years. And the apparent lack of police interest or adequate response.

“There’s a lot of shoplifting. I’ve never seen this much,” said Beatson. “It’s definitely got worse. I’m guessing it’s tougher for people.”

More alarming is that he and his staff have not only wrestled with thieves who had a trolley of stolen product, he’s also tried carjacking a vehicle a thief used after fleeing the scene with hundreds of dollars of meat.

“We’ve stopped numerous

ones. It’s sort of got to the point where we don’t even ring the police,” he said. “The questions asked are just stupid. They ask if I want them to fingerprint. They say to trespass them. If anyone’s going to steal they’re not going to stay around to be told off.

I’ve been advised to get a (car) rego. We’ve done that and nothing gets done. We’ve been burgled countless times. I don’t even ring up (anymore).”

The thefts are hurting the company financially too, including the increase in insurance premiums.

“They get away with (up to) $500 of goods. It will costs a couple of grand to repair a door.

We’ve tried to make it hard. They just break through the doors.”

The store now has a steel door and steel bollards but acknowledges that if they want to get in, they will.

In terms of dollar value in respect of losses? “Tens of thousands on repairs and upgrades.

“We’ve been trying to get her for a long time. Police say ring 111. We’ve tried. I can’t hold her.

He wants to know where the disincentive is.

“I’ve carjacked the car myself,” he admitted.

“Someone could have gone around and trespassed her then or come here and looked at the

He also told of staff trying to get stolen product back from a shoplifter.

“There was a fight over a trolley with stolen meat. We were fighting over it,” said Beatson. “What are we supposed to do?”

Counties Manukau East acting Area Commander Jared Pirret said the business complex where Mr Beatson’s store is located has seen several shops targeted for burglary and vehicle crime.

“This has been an on-going issue and reducing crime in the area is a priority for police.”

We have identified a number of risks within the complex, including bad lighting and visual blocks (trees). These things can make a property more likely to be targeted by opportunistic criminals.

“We acknowledge Mr Beatson’s frustrations that his business has been targeted by criminals in this way and want to assure, both him and the wider community, that we have identified the area as a high priority.”

Police are working with the Greater East Tamaki Business Association, Howick/Pakuranga Crime Watch and the Asian Council on Reducing Crime to increase visibility in the area, Inspector Pirret said.

“The most recent event at ‘Aussie Butchers’ in September is under investigation and we are awaiting CCTV footage from Mr Beatson.

“We have made other lines of enquiry, including looking into the vehicle used, however these have been unsuccessful. “

Zoning test case looming

he outcome of an Auckland Council test case on zoning issues is awaited by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA).

The test case is this Friday, after which the HRRA’s lawyer will present its submission on the resolution of the zoning issues proposed by the council.

Gayleen Mackereth, who chairs the HRRA, says if the “out of zone” claim succeeds, it would be able to follow the issue up with further action in the Environment Court to

ensure Howick’s views are protected.

The association is raising funds to help cover the costs of its fight to save iconic Hauraki Gulf views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve.

Proposed plan changes would allow multiple 13-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Park Hill Roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill.

Money raised so far totals $12,818.

Ross re-selected for Botany The New Zealand National Party has confirmed JamiLee Ross as the Party’s 2017 General Election candidate for the Botany electorate.

A mind-boggling tournament of minds

ou can spot them from a mile away. Meet the gifted and talented students of Elim Christian College who participated in the Tournament of Minds (TOM) and took first place at the national competition.

Talking to the Times prior to taking off to compete at the Australasian Pacific TOM on the Gold Coast, 12-year-olds Oli Isom and Tyler Wolsky say they are confident of winning the science and technology category.

TOM is touted to be one of the fastest growing international problemsolving programmes that have thousands of students participate nationally and internationally.

Students have to solve mind-boggling, open-

ended challenges from any of the four disciples - science and technology, engineering and mathematics, social sciences and language and literature.

Year seven students Oli and Tyler are part of the team of seven and say that the competition is about spontaneity, finding solutions mixed with science and technology as well as a bit of drama.

“Our initial challenge was to script a device that communicates a message,” says Oli. “The scenario given was that there is a lockdown in a school. A world disaster has just happened and everything is smashed in the school with debris lying around.

“We had to create a machine that communicates with flag signals since nothing else works.”

While the initial challenge for the regional competition allowed teams six

weeks to script and work on a device, for the nationals it was just three hours.

Tyler says that the complex challenges involved thinking on their feet by

creating an imaginary character and articulating their thoughts to a panel of judges.

He speaks of a suit that withstands different elements and mentions terms like atomisation with the look of a young Einstein in the making.

On tournament day, students have to present their idea in a 3m x 3m performance area.

“Not only do you have to be a good actor but you also have to work collaboratively, have thinking skills, give a scientific explanation and have time management skills,” says Oli. Much as they are excited about participating in TOM, ask them about the highlight of their trip to the Gold Coast and pat comes the reply: “It’s going to Sea World,” they say in unison.

Four Macleans College students have won a trans-Tasman business competition.

Ben Payne, Catherin Chen, Charlene Lo and Zachary Wong represented New Zealand against a team from the Queensland Academy of Science Mathematics and Technology in Brisbane.

The trip came about after they won the New Zealand National Secondary Schools Business Case Competition.

In a case competition, teams have to look at a real-life organisation and analyse the company, identify key issues and present a strategy to a panel of judges on how the organisation can best meet its aims.

Case competitions require analytical, teamwork and presentation skills which are highly valued in the modern workplace.

The Queensland Academy team had won the Australian National Secondary Schools Business Case Competition.

The students had five hours to prepare recommendations on how the Lotus F1 Racing team could cope with the disruptive changes that affected the F1 industry in 2013.

They were required to present their recommendations in a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation followed by a 10 minute Q&A session with the judges.

The three-person judging panel was made up of alumni from case programmes in Auckland, Queensland and Melbourne and included a project manager at BHP Billiton and a consultant at PWC in Zurich.

Zachary Wong said the judges praised the Macleans College team’s performance, saying it could have been delivered by experienced university students.

On top of the all-expenses paid, three-day trip to Brisbane, the students also received A$500 for winning.

They were coached by students from the University of Auckland Management Case Consulting Club and were supported in Brisbane by commerce teacher Jacob Samuel and University of Auckland staff member Olivia Flack.

Glow party returns

An annual fun night for the family, organised as a safe alternative to trick or treating, will run again this Halloween.

Howick’s C3 Church is bringing back its annual community Glow Party which was attended by more than 2000 people last year. In the course of the event 25,000 lollies will be distributed.

A ‘maze room’ will have a Star Wars theme this year. Other attractions will include a pitch black room a disco, and prizes for dress ups.

And an outdoors performance stage will host dance performances by Flow Academy of Motion, Jayes Dance and Macleans Primary School kapa haka group. Other attractions include free food, sausages, drinks and coffee, bouncy castles and an obstacle course, goodie bags, face painting and candy floss.

Entry for the event at the church in Aviemore Drive, Highland Park, is a gold coin per child.

This year the Howick Local Board has come in behind the event and is providing community funding towards this recreational opportunity for families. Local businesses and charities are also supporting the event this year.

t’s an American custom that is catching on in New Zealand, but not all are convinced it’s safe or “proper Kiwi”.

Cession Community Trust has come up with a fresh idea for families who want to celebrate Halloween.

It’s running a Halloween event with a Kiwi twist on Saturday (October 29).

The idea was sparked two years ago by one of the Cession Community playgroup’s mothers who was new to the area asking what people did around trick or treating.

She wasn’t sure it was safe or something the neighbours really embraced and was looking for a good alternative.

The Halloween Car Boot Party was born out of this desire to have a fun but safe Halloween event that included the traditional Halloween practice of trick or treating but with a Kiwi flavour to it.

Playgroup coordinator Katie Buckley says it’s often hard for new parents or people new to the Howick area to know how “it’s done” here.

Barbara’s books

E

very morning Barbara Rosie gets up at 6am and reads for two hours.

The 61-year-old owner of Readaway Bookshop in Howick reads everything and anything, “except science fiction”.

So when you wander into this local literary hideaway, and are overcome by the eclectic variety of books on offer, there’s no one better for a recommendation than Ms Rosie.

“I read a lot. I read just about everything so I can recommend,” she says. “I get a lot of customers come in and ask for recommendations.”

Sitting in the Readaway Bookshop back office – the narrow space distractingly crammed with even more books and magazines – Ms Rosie recently told the Times about her lifetime love of books and her much-loved family business, which turns 60 next year.

Her aunt Margaret Clark bought the Readaway Book Club in 1957 with her parents and ever since then it has had an enduring presence in Howick.

The shop settled in its current spot on Picton Street in 1985 and that’s when Ms Rosie joined her aunt to help out.

She started her career in books at the Auckland University library and moved from there to a bookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland. When she returned to New Zealand, she became a sales rep for Penguin Books.

So when Ms Rosie joined her aunt in Howick in 1985, she had the perfect background to “morph” the store – more of a news agent at the time – into a bookshop and back then that’s where the market was heading.

“In those days people read a lot and we sold a lot of children’s books. For books, that

was the heyday probably – the 80s and 90s.

“It has got harder in the last 10 years when people like Amazon opened up. Anybody under 35, unless they’re really interested, buys everything online.”

Sadly her aunt Margaret died earlier this year. She was 84.

“It was her baby – this bookshop,” Ms Rosie says.

“She started it and right to the end she was always here pottering around. She loved the whole thing.”

Ms Rosie is determined to keep Readaway Bookshop going but it is a business after all, she says. It’s not all about loving and working with books.

And it’s certainly not like the 1980s and 90s.

“It’s not as good at all. No. It’s not that we struggle, but it’s hard work to keep it going and that will be the online buying. But in saying that, any retailer will suffer the same thing these days. It’s a trend.”

However, the shop has a huge base of loyal customers, Ms Rosie says, and that is what has kept them alive, at times when bookshops around the world were shutting their doors.

“We’re doing what we do and trying to do it well.”

And what do you do?

“Customer service,” she replies.

“And being pleasant to everybody – just things that you wouldn’t get at a big store, where they won’t initially go the extra mile to order in books and things like that.”

This is also where her love of books and reading plays a role.

In store and over the phone, Ms Rosie and her four parttime staff members talk to customers, new and old, about their favourite authors, genres, and books.

“Talking intelligently to customers,” Ms Rosie calls it.

“Making [sure] people enjoy you talking to them and not

treating them as just another person with money.”

Of course there is also “the pleasure of browsing” at Readaway Bookshop, Ms Rosie says.

“It’s just the whole atmosphere, isn’t it? It’s an absolute pleasure. It’s relaxation, a stress free environment. It’s escapism.”

Ms Rosie also keeps herself busy after hours by supporting local and New Zealand authors at various literary events and book launches.

“I do a lot of that, which normally a chain [store] wouldn’t do readily,” she says.

“So you really have to rely on the independent booksellers to do a lot of supporting of that sort of thing.”

New Zealand Bookshop Day, which is this Saturday, is all about celebrating and recognising the role that bookshops play in communities.

Bookshops like Ms Rosie’s.

The annual nationwide celebration started last year and is also about encouraging people to buy books locally.

Bookstores around New Zealand will be holding events to mark the day.

The Readaway Bookshop event starts in store at 11am and features some well-known local authors.

Back to talking about the future, Ms Rosie says it will be sad to leave Readaway Bookshop when the time comes.

She’s almost at retirement age and has seen generations pass through her store.

“A lot of people come in and mention that – that it’s still here and they used to come in when they were kids.”

This journalist did, and still does.

So when Ms Rosie does leave it all behind, which is hopefully still a few years away, it will indeed be a sad time for the bookworms of Howick.

They will be hoping someone can carry it on, as Ms Rosie did for her aunt Margaret all those years ago.

Has life thrown you a curve ball and you find yourself starting over?

or the past 10 years composer and Howick Brass trombonist Anthony Young has harboured an ambition to write a musical composition based on the swash buckling hero of the New Zealand Wars, Gustavus von Tempsky.

Now the opportunity has come with Howick Brass securing a $4574 Creative Communities grant to commission a New Zealand work for the band to tackle.

The band’s musical director Luke Christiansen wanted to programme more New Zealand music into its major performances and the next step was to commission a work.

Having a composer in the band’s ranks made the task easy.

Mr Young has been a member of the band for the past five years. He was born in Howick and educated at Edgewater College. He currently lectures in composition at the University of Auckland School of Music and teaches it at Botany Downs and Howick Colleges.

While he’s thought about the Von Tempsky work for a long time, he says he never envisaged it being for a brass band.

It will be his first composed for a brass band from scratch.

The work, he says, will be longer than usual performance pieces – 10-15 minutes - requiring extra technical demands. It may be a test work for national band championships and the aim is to have it ready for a premiere concert in Howick next July.

“I found the Von Tempsky character interesting although he’s a bit forgotten now,” Mr Young says. “He was a popular folk hero, coming to New Zealand in the 1860s and fighting in the New Zealand Wars.

“Today people wouldn’t view him in the same way. A few generations later, people have different opinions of those times. He was a man of

Mr Young says because of brass band heritage, a high proportion of the musical works performed come from Britain.

“We have a strong brass band movement in this country and their technical ability is astonishing. But almost all the pieces are from overseas.

“I feel at home playing New Zealand works. I can feel it and the style of writing is different.”

Howick Brass is a C grade band and Mr Young says it could be the start of a new trend if the A grade bands throughout the country were to start commissioning New Zealand composers.

“It would be good see a community band in Howick being part of a new movement and establishing a new tradition.

That would be exciting.”

Mr Christianson says he suspects there is a deep resonance with many players in the band, with the New Zealand music evoking an emotional response and re-igniting perhaps forgotten connections with places through the sounds created.

“As an active artistic ensemble in Howick, I feel it is our role to help promote the art of local composers and artists instead of recycling music and tunes as so many community ensembles seem to be doing now,” he says. “We are exploring other New Zealand pieces that we intend to work into our 2017 programmes, but also to our larger events towards the end of this year, such as Carols by Candlelight.”

“He was innovative, a good leader, the men were loyal to him and he was respected by his enemies,” Mr Young says. “He would lead charges with his sword drawn. But it’s also safe to assume he was also involved in a massacre in Taranaki. I’m interested in characters seen as heroes but often their dark side is not talked about.

“He was Prussion so no-one at the time took him seriously and he was not acknowledged by the military powers because he was not British.”

Mr Christiansen says the band has been exploring original New Zealand music for brass band since the start of this year when it played Gareth Farr’s Waipiro for concerts in and around Howick and then on to the 2016 National Brass Championships in Napier.

“I really wanted to take the opportunity to work up a piece of real substance and integrity for this performance and to introduce both the band and the Howick community to original New Zealand music written for brass band,” he says. “This was highly successful and we received a grant from the Howick Local Board assisting us with the hiring of the music. It was an additional benefit being able to perform the work in the area in which it was written, captivating Hawke’s Bay with the theatre right on Marine Parade, looking out to Cape Kidnappers on a stunning day.”

The band moved on to perform Down The Brunner Mine, written in the mid-1990s by Dunedin-based composer Anthony Ritchie, at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships where it won the section outright.

Frustrating and fantastic – top finishers describe mixed race “A

terrible race” was the verdict from some of the first boats to arrive into Russell at the finish line of the PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic. Not because they didn’t get fantastic conditions for nearly all of the race. But because for the first two hours the race was so good, they thought they were going to have a good chance of shaving at least a little time off the race record.

A total of 141 boats started Friday’s PIC Coastal Classic Auckland to Russell yacht race, in conditions described as any sailor’s dream. With the wind coming from the south-west, and with just the right amount to make it great fun, the PIC Coastal Classic yacht race got underway in Auckland with crowds out at the usual vantage points like Devonport Wharf and North Head.

Frank Racing’s skipper Simon Hull said that they were on track

for a record time for the first third of the race. But over time the strength went out of the wind and when it turned unexpectedly went north, and very light, on the approach to Cape Brett.

“That’s sailing,” he said, of the result which remained his sixth Coastal Classic win in seven years. Frank Sailing had a sensational upwind leg between

Cape Brett and Russell, reaching speeds of well over 25 knots, to finish at 1724hrs.

Taeping, which finished at 1907hrs in second place, used a special upwind sail to get out of the predicament at Cape Brett followed by an uncomfortable, wet finish between Cape Brett and Russell township.

Buck a big hit at ‘Ranga’ fundraiser Close to $14,000 was raised for Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s junior academies at the 11th annual Bledisloe Luncheon and Fundraising Auction last week.Proceeds go to run the club’s Under 15 and Under 18 academies.

PURC general manager Stephen Hackett was delighted with the amount raised at the function, attended by 220 guests. Guest speaker was All Black rugby legend Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford.

“We are pleased that our annual Bledisloe Luncheon was again a huge success for the club,” he said.

“The support we receive from both our members and the people of the Howick and Pakuranga area is greatly appreciated.

“The venue looked fantastic, Buck Shelford proved a hit with the audience and, most importantly, our guests enjoyed their day with us. We look forward to doing it all again in 2017.”

Slime, a 13.2m catamaran designed Malcolm Tennant catamaran first took line honours in the race in 2002, was the third boat to cross the finish line, at 1918hrs, a finish time that was within four minutes of its finish time 14 years ago, with the same skipper.

Kotuku and Sundreamer were the fourth and fifth multihulls home.

The first of the big monohulls was Harry Dodson’s Transpac 52, Mayhem, which finished at 2026hrs. Viento II crossed the line just two minutes later after a very close race, and Awen, the Open 60, at 2041hrs.

Ten boats had finished before 2100hrs, with half of the fleet through Cape Brett, meaning that the picturesque anchorage outside of Russell will fill up overnight. The tail enders were at Tutukaka.

The smallest entrant, Spank, at 7.7m, was at Whangaruru and sailing at 8.5knots according to its PredictWind tracker.

The entries included one all female crew, seven solo entrants – including two from Pine Harbour Cruising Club, and five boats with just two crew.

Considered one of the world’s most famous yacht races, the Coastal traditionally attracts the very best of New Zealand yachting to race alongside a colourful fleet of boats of all shapes, sizes and abilities.

The event is organised by the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club and is traditionally a battle between single hulled boats ‘monohulls’ and double or triple hulled yachts ‘multihulls’ .

There were 16 divisions in total and with a great range of boats on the start line with results calculated both by finishing order, and by handicap.

When: The race started off Devonport Wharf in Auckland at 9.30am on Friday 21 October and finished off Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands Distance: 119 nautical miles

Results for local yachtsmen: The first figure denotes overall placing. The boat’s name follows, then the skipper.

Clubs included Bucklands Beach Yacht Club (BBYC), Maraetai Beach Boat Club MBBC) and Pine Harbour Cruising Club (PHCC).

The time references refer to the finish time and then the elapsed time. The final categories denote the race class and the boat’s design.

Local police officer Constable Steve Webb was first on the scene on Monday and praised Mr Davidson’s cool decisions.

“All credit to Alistair for his quick response. Because of that we were able to apprehend him. People must always be cautious. We don’t want them assaulted,” Mr Webb said. “We strongly encourage residents to lock and secure their property.

If you see anything suspicious, please call us straight away.”

The local man appeared in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday charged with burglary and was released on bail to appear again in November.

“He’s been on our radar from some time,” said Mr Webb.

As a result of this incident, a warrant was executed on Tuesday which turned up more stolen items. The man will face two additional charges of burglary.

Taking the spooky out of Halloween night

welfth year in running, the Light Party first introduced by St Columba as a more positive and upbeat alternative to Halloween had more than a thousand people turn up for the celebration last year.

This year, the Light Party with plenty of activities and entertainment is going to be held on Monday, October 31 from 5-8pm.

Alex Tracey, the children’s and family ministry leader at St Columba says that the idea behind the Halloween event is to encourage children to

have more fun in a clean and safe environment.

“Instead of knocking on doors of strangers and asking for lolly, you can come here and have fun rides, participate in a talent parade and have as much lolly you want. We want to get rid of the bad influence of Halloween,” he says.

The children’s’ pastor believes that even the elderly folk don’t feel very safe with strangers knocking at the door on Halloween. “We encourage them saying, be here and get your grand kids along. Also, this is a good opportunity for social

interaction since the elderly members of our community don’t get enough of it.”

Instead of dressing up as witches, ghouls and ghosts, children can come dressed as superheroes, princesses, fairies and rugby heroes.

Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in something funny, friendly or fantastic.

This year there is an additional cup and saucer ride apart from the rock wall, bouncy castle, face painting and carnival games.

Local musicians as well as the kapa haka group from Elim Christian College will be performing on the day.

Mr Tracey who has been involved with organising the Light Party at St Columba for the last six years says: “If you have kids, parents and grandparents please come along and join the party.

There is nothing like sharing the community spirit in a festive atmosphere.

“We welcome not only the church people but also our community and neighbours.

You can enjoy the food sold at the stalls; a lot of it is gluten free this time and there will be plenty to eat and takeaway.”

Let’s protect the views

Re Stockade Hill views.

In response to the letter from Heather Guptill (Times, October 20), one of the delights of Howick Village is the stunning view of the Gulf on the approach to the township beside Stockade Hill.

I support the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association and your newspaper in your efforts to preserve this view, rather than allow it to be partially blocked by buildings of up to three storeys along the upper stretch of Picton Street.

I agree with Mrs Guptill - further development on much of Mellons Bay Road may not be affected by the changes under the Unitary Plan.

But let’s save this great view shaft before it’s too late.

I do not wish to have to walk up Stockade Hill in order to enjoy it.

Now that’s a full tide I was travelling on the ferry to downtown Auckland and took these photos at approximately 9.20am last Tuesday (October 18). High tide was 3.6m and this was close to the time of high spring tide.

Warwick Rumble, Farm Cove ask for a declaration that the late rezoning to Mixed Housing Urban (MHU) along our precious ridgeline at Mellons Bay Road and Picton St is “out of scope”.

There were hundreds of submissions to the IHP from Howick residents asking that the area remain Single Housing zoning with large sections and good distance from boundaries and many of those were also asking for the old Cockle Bay area to remain as a Heritage Zone as it had been under Manukau City Council.

Not one submission to the Unitary Plan asked for this area to be upzoned to provide for multiple houses or apartments.

We were therefore somewhat surprised at the letter from a former “Howickian”, who is in the process of sell-

ing the family home, stating that so far no views have been blocked. This is correct as houses in this area were built or renovated under the old “8 metre height limit” applying to this zone.

Our point and real concern is that in the future, under the MHU zoning, multiple houses 12 metres tall may be built, and these buildings will be built to the higher side of the sections nearer the road due to the subdivision of existing sections.

This 50 per cent increase in building height limit will impinge on the precious views from Stockade Hill that at the moment can be enjoyed by everyone.

The devastating change to the Special Character of Howick and the threat to our iconic views cannot be underestimated hence the

Hearing the ideas and criticism of suggestions of how to deal with the P problem in state houses reminds me of two proverbs.

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

And - Don’t knock other people’s ideas unless you have a better idea of your own.

It was good to read the article on Elim Christian College Junior Campus. A lot of people in our area are in the dark about the messy area adjoining our properties. We have had to tolerate this mess for more than three years.

Oh how the truth hurts Aussie clown I

t’s hard to understand why paranoid Australian rugby coach Michael Cheika should take umbrage at being portrayed as a clown by Herald cartoonist Rod Emmerson when he continues to act like one.

I don’t dispute Chieka’s right to dispute TMO Shaun Veldsman’s controversial decision to over-rule referee Nigel Owens’ awarding of Henry Speight’s try in the All Blacks 37-10 Eden Park win on Saturday night.

But to claim Emmerson and New Zealanders showed disrespect for the Australian jersey was ridiculous. Emmerson is, after all, an Aussie, who was poking fun solely at Cheika, for whom making outrageous claims is part of his DNA. Certainly then All Black captain Richie McCaw didn’t grizzle last year when an Australia cartoonist depicted him as a grub. He just got on with it as he usually does, head down, bum up and mouth shut.

That, we like to think, is the Kiwi way. Just as Chieka’s outburst failed to deflect our pride in the All Blacks’ new world record 18 consecutive wins for tier one rugby nations.

Yet this time the Wallabies made them battle hard, enjoying 65 per cent possession and 68 per cent territory before the home team bolted home, with Julian Savea scoring two tries

and making the final pass for Dane Coles to notch his.

In the end it looked much easier than it was with the All Blacks scoring six tries to one.

Had Speight’s try not been ruled out for shepherding it would not have made any difference to the end result.

Once again, Kieran Read, Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock were outstanding in the forwards where lively openside flanker Matt Todd enjoyed his finest game in the black jersey, making four turnovers and numerous tackles.

Consistent fullback Ben Smith was once again brilliant on counter attack and wing Julian Savea was back to his best with a storming second half, bouncing defenders off him as though they were rubber dummies.

In beating Australia three times this year, it was also a triumph for coaches Steve Hansen, Ian Foster, Wayne Smith and Mike Cron after NZ fans felt cheated when Chieka was named 2015 International Rugby Coach of the Year after Hansen’s team won the World Cup. Snowboarders rule at NI champs R

egan Mooney has notched up an incredible win in the recent North Island Secondary Schools Snowboard Competition.

The Year 12 Pakuranga College student beat entrants from 43 other schools to win the Boardercross event at the championships in September.

Elim Christian College’s Baylin Kelin Ovink had an exception competition and took overall top juior girl’s award.

Macleans College’s Angus Jones finished in ninth equal place, as did Saint Kentigern’s Bronson Gleye.

Another Pakuranga student – Daniel Hotter finished 10th equal.

Elim Christian College won the girls’

combined team award while Macleans College was fourth in the boys’ combined team.

This competition has been running since 1997 and is available to all secondary schools across the North Island.

It is the largest snow sport event of its kind in the North Island and is hosted annually by Ruapehu College.

Time to tackle the marathon Thousands of eager runners will be making their way into central Auckland early on Sunday morning to take part in the Auckland Marathon.

As of October 20, there are 12,700 entries in the popular event and one of those is local teacher and mum Mandy Heim.

The Elim Christian College staff member is running the 42.195km marathon for the second year in a row and this year has someone special running alongside her.

Mrs Heim, who moved to New Zealand from South Africa in 1995, will be joined by her sister Tracee Botes at the Devonport start-line.

Mrs Botes is flying out from South Africa especially for the event.

Mrs Heim ran the Auckland Half Marathon (21km) in 2003 with her “Kiwi sister” Heather Pretorius.

Both were young mums at the time with their own personal challenges to overcome.

“We both agreed that one day we would tackle the full marathon. It became a ‘when we are 50’ goal and that ‘one day’ marathon was last year,” Mrs Heim said.

“Our aim was to survive the marathon. Well, with the support of friends and family, particularly Heather’s three girls, we loved it so much that we are back to do it all over again this year.”

Now they are a team of three.

“We are a little older but much wiser and the added excitement is that this time around we have been training on opposite sides of the world, sharing updates and training stories online with my South African sister, who is a seasoned ultramarathon competitor and who is ticking something off her bucket list – running the famous Auckland Marathon.”

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club results The Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club (HPCC) premier men beat Parnell CC at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

This was the third Jeff Crowe Cup (limited overs championship) game of the season for the HPCC premier men.

They lost to Takapuna CC in week one and their game against Auckland University CC was abandoned in week two.

Students from 22 New Zealand schools including Bucklands Beach Intermediate (BBI) School, Macleans College, Botany Downs Secondary College, Pakuranga College and Saint Kentigern College have been recognised for outstanding mathematical achievement.

The Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) is celebrating top secondary students – and those from BBI - who participated in the 2016 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

BBI is included as it has to do with the way the school years are defined in Australia, and the way AMT refers to the cohorts who undertake the different competitions. There were 24 students who attended from the Howick, Pakuranga, Botany area - one from St Kents; nine from Macleans; 11 from BBI and three from BDSC. Professor Ivan Reilly presented 60 high-achieving students with their awards at a special event at King’s College on Friday. It included 19 prize winners, one of whom also received a medal for exceptional results. The AMT awards prizes to approximately the top 0.3 per cent of students who sit the AMC. Of the 60 medals that will be awarded in 2016, two are being awarded to students in New Zealand.

Adjunct Professor Mike Clapper, executive director of the AMT, said: “The AMC is designed to be accessible to all students but it also identifies the most talented, who can then go on to a series of AMT enrichment programmes that nurture their special abilities.”

The Great Duck Race & Salmon Run T

he Great Auckland Duck Race & Salmon Run will be in action from 9am to midday on Saturday October 29.

The exciting family fun day features big ducks and little ducks racing the rapids at Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Manukau.

There will also be loads of free festival events and it is free for spectators to come and see the craziest race in Auckland.

Local businesses have decorated their yellow rubber duckies and for the past month, the birds have been in training for the white water race of their lives.

There is a prize for the best dressed business duck, voted for by the public.

People can get in on the action with a duck that costs $5 that will be available to buy on race day.

Thousands of little duckies going crazy down the grade 4 rapids will create a quacker sight.

More than 30 primary and intermediate schools from central to east and south Auckland are also up for a best-dressed duck award.

Then they will be braving the wild water to see, which school duck is the fastest.

The ducks aren’t the only

ones to have some fun. There is also the salmon run, a test for strong swimmers as they battle their way upstream, against the grade 2 rapids of Vector Wero.

Not for the faint-hearted, this event has three divisions and is limited to 40 swimmers per division.

Final concert features Mozart Dutch piano virtuoso Ronald Brautigam will make his debut performance with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in the final of the 2016 Masterworks programme.

NZSO music director Edo de Waart has chosen Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.24 in C minor. He says Mozart’s treasure is in safe hands with the brilliant Ronald Brautigam.

“Only a truly great pianist can make a work as mysterious as this appear simple,” he says.

A student of the legendary Rudolf Serkin, Brautigam performs regularly with leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw, London Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras.

Biological control avoids chemicals I

f garden pests get out of hand, there are ways of keeping their populations down which don’t rely on insecticides.

Consumer New Zealand suggests methods that have the added advantage of protecting the wide range of insects and other animals which a garden needs. Pest damage can be limited by making sure a garden is a healthy balanced system.

Many insects are useful in the garden. Pollinators such as bees and butterlies help plants to produce fruit and seeds.

Insects and other animals become pests when they damage plants more than the gardener is prepared to put up with.

Producing perfect specimens is important for gardeners who grow vegetables or flowers for competitions or shows. But most have a more relaxed approach and don’t mind the odd blemish or a few chewed leaves. Most plants can tolerate a few insects feeding on them before there is any noticeable drop in yield or quality.

To prevent pest problems the soil must be fertile, with soil animals allowed to play their vital role. Feed the soil by returning organic matter to it as compost or mulch. Fallen leaves, grass clippings and rotted manure can all be used as mulches. Soil kept healthy this way will not need commercial fertilisers to boost its fertility.

why a plant with a pest problem is so vulnerable include needing more or less water, nitrogen or other nutrients; or more sun.

Grow plants that do well in the local soil and climate.

Young, tender seedlings are more vulnerable to pest damage than older, more established plants, so the soil should be good enough to give the plants or seeds a rapid start in life. They should be watered frequently to encourage steady growth.

Ways of discouraging pests include keeping weeds down. A dense cover keeps the soil surface damp encouraging slugs.

Aphids can survive the winter on weeds then move on to new plants in spring. Destroy any heavily infested plants before pests spread to others. The affected leaves or the whole plant

should be burnt or buried deeply.

Pests can be stopped building up in the soil by growing each type of vegetable in a different patch each year. A regular rotation cycle should cover three to five years. Peas and beans make nitrogen available in the soil, so they should be planted the season before crops which need lots of nitrogen – such as cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli (brassicas). Follow with a root crop such as carrots or onions.

A mixture of plants may encourage a greater variety of insects, so there is less chance of one species doing better than others and becoming a pest. It also attracts insects and birds which feed on those you want to control.

Growing “companion” plants together in the same area can also help control pests. They

can repel unwanted insects, for example, scented marigolds repel whitefly, or attract pests away from plants, such as nasturtiums which attract aphids away from other plants.

Natural enemies of some pests are attracted by the flowers of carrot, parsnip, parsley and dill plants, for example parasitic wasps which feed on leafroller caterpillars and tomato fruitworms.

Some varieties of vegetables and fruit are more resistant to common pests than others, so try growing other varieties.

If pests get out of hand there are ways to bring their numbers down if a little damage is tolerated. Rubbing affected parts of the plant between thumb and fingers to squash insects, or removing caterpillars, slugs and snails

by hand may seem time-consuming. But these methods can be effective in small gardens or where only a few plants are being damaged.

Sprays made from garlic, onion or aromatic herbs, such as tansy, mint, rosemary or basil, can repel common pests. A garlic spray can deter aphids, mites and white butterflies. Try crushing several cloves of garlic, add 1 litre of boiling water, leave to cool and strain through a sieve. Add 1 teaspoon of soap or detergents to help the spray stick to the leaves. A spray will probably be needed several times, one-two days apart.

Sprays of soapy water can be used for soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mealybugs, mites and whiteflies. To make a soap spray, dissolve a quarter cake of soap in a little hot water, then add fourfive litres of cold water. Higher concentrations may damage plants.

Often a forceful spray of plain water is all that is needed to remove insects. Like soap sprays, this should be repeated.

Some insects, such as ladybirds, hover flies, lacewings and ground beetles, as well as spiders and mites, eat garden pests. Others live on or in them as parasites.

They can be attracted to the garden by planting flowers such as Michaelmas daisies, calendulas, Californian bluebells and sea hollies. Birds may also help control potential pests. The greater the range of plants in the garden, the more different predators and parasites will be attracted.

iving spaces with minimal partitions have been trending for quite some time. These modern, welcoming spaces that flow freely appeal to individuals in many different situations, from people living alone to couples and families.

However it can be hard to achieve a balanced, aesthetically pleasing design for an open floor plan. Here are some tips to create a cohesive space.

to create visual boundaries between different areas. For example, use a low shelf, a rug, a bookcase or some plants to define the living room area. he COVIC (Counties-Manukau Veteran-Golfers Interclub Community) Golf Premiership Shield and Championship Plate finals will be played at Maramarua Golf Club on Wednesday November 9.

Last week in the penultimate round of play at Pakuranga Golf Club, fine but soft going saw 78-players represent their clubs in team pennants competition.

Pakuranga used their home course advantage to win the round and remain firm favourites to defend the COVIC Cham-

pionship Plate. Waiuku are the only other team with a chance of beating them but need to win the final round and hope Pakuranga blow up with a sixth place to earn a right for a sudden death one player shoot-out.

Pukekohe are only three points behind Waiuku and will be chasing them for the runner up spot, while Manukau, Wattle Downs and Onewhero, each separated by 1-point, will be trying to avoid the honour of being the 2016 wooden spoon holders.

petition, Waikare may have won the round with their 140-point team score; however, it is the ever consistent Huntly who did enough by drawing second with Maramarua to attain an unbeatable position with a six point lead over the second placed Clark’s Beach. They had a shocker with only fifth place and moved out to 119-points, just 1-point ahead of Maramarua with Waikare 1-point further back in fourth.

While these clubs can no longer win the shield, the battle is on for runner up spot. Hauraki will need

results to go their way to move up the table and Awhitu are now too far back to avoid finishing sixth and last in the premiership. Considering the size of this club, just making the top division this year is a victory in itself. They were undefeated in both codes this season.

or the first time in 10 years, the Bucklands Beach Tennis Club (BBTC) has a team taking part in the Caro Bowl – Auckland’s premier interclub tennis competition for adults.

A young BBTC team qualified for the Caro Bowl after working their way up the grades over the past few years – from First Grade Women’s to Caro Reserve and then last season they won the Caro Reserve grade and moved up again.

Their promotion to the Caro Bowl is an important milestone for BBTC, head coach Julia Sim said.

She said the team is a bunch of young up-and-comers who are all looking forward to the challenge and experience.

“Ana Tamanika and Tina Li are both ranked highly in their age groups (14s and 12s) on a national level and Jess Hughson has been a top junior at BBTC over the years and brings some experi-

ence to this young team.

“These three players formed the body of the team that won up over the last two years. The team line up also features two top juniors from Wellington, Tamara Anderson and Amelia Lawson, who are highly graded and both ranked in the top five nationally in the 16s age group.”

Sim said it is a team with “lots of promise for the future”.

The Caro Bowl will feature the eight top club teams in Auckland, for both men and women.

Sunnyhills Tennis Club in Pakuranga also has a team in the women’s Caro Bowl competition and Cockle Bay Tennis Club has a team in the men’s.

Both competitions have two groups of four teams, with each group playing three round-robin matches.

The last two rounds are play-off rounds to determine where each team finishes.

The first match for the BBTC team is tomorrow at

home at 6pm against Parnell 1.

Their next two roundrobin games are on Sunday afternoons against Royal Oak (November 6) and Remuera (November 13), both away.

Sim said the team is hoping for a big turnout tomorrow evening at the club.

The Sunnyhills team will play their first game against Parnell 2 at home on Sunday at 2pm and the Cockle Bay men’s team will also open their Caro Bowl campaign on Sunday against Blockhouse Bay 2 at home, starting at 2pm.

Meanwhile, the Bucklands Beach Tennis Club also has a big year of celebrations ahead of it, marking its 90 year anniversary with range of events.

The first of these events will take place on December 5, with an afternoon of fun tennis followed by a social evening at the clubrooms.

All members from over the years are welcome to attend and the club is hoping to see plenty of old faces.

There is also a family night at BBTC on November 5.
