hen you look at the 11 candidates who have been elected to represent the Howick Local Board area for the next three years, what do you see? Familiar faces and names, people who have spent a lot of time serving and leading our communities, candidates passionate about the area we live in. All of those answers are true but when I opened my laptop on Saturday afternoon and looked at the local election results, I saw 10 white Europeans. I saw three candidates who have been elected for a second term (six years) and seven who have been elected for a third (nine

years). I saw a few career politicians who have been representing the people of this area for even longer than that, from before the Super City amalgamation in 2010. But what I didn’t, and don’t, see in those 11 candidates is the changing communities of Botany, Howick and Pakuranga. This is despite a major increase in candidate competition and variety in 2016. Howick was the third mostcontested ward in Auckland this year, the Botany and Howick subdivisions were two of the top 10 most-contested local board seats, and Pakuranga was not far behind. Yet we have only one new face this term and he is the only non-

European representing our area. According to the 2013 Census, 55 per cent of the usually resident population in the Howick Local Board area identify as European. But what about the rest? What about the 38.8 per cent who identify with an Asian ethnic identity? Or the 5.2 per cent who identify as Maori? Or the 4.6 per cent Pacific peoples? These census figures show there are also people who identify with more than one ethnicity, and I haven’t even mentioned those who identify as Middle Eastern, African or Latin American. And remember, that data was collated three years ago. Those ethnic percentages (which equates to tens of thousands of

non-Europeans) are bound to be bigger next census. There were at least eight nonEuropean candidates standing for the Howick Local Board and the Howick Ward in 2016. One got in. Is that a reflection of the residents who live here? Think of your neighbours, the people you see at the supermarket, the kids your children go to school with. Whether you like it or not – and I realise a lot of people in this area don’t – Auckland is changing. Botany, Howick and Pakuranga are changing too. Actually, they already have. Our local leaders should be able to understand and relate to the changing population ➤ Turn to Page 3 they represent.
