Store shuts doors with $2.4m owed By MARIANNE KELLY

H

OWICK Village women’s clothing store Jean Jones is closed and a dozen south-east businesses are waiting for their money as the result of the retail group going into liquidation. Shareholders of Cozican Investments who own the chain appointed insolvency specialist accounting firm, Chapman-Atkins as liquidators on July 31. The Liquidators First Report says the company was experiencing difficult trading conditions in the retail clothing market, however the full rea-

son for insolvency is not yet known. Joint liquidator Amanda Atkins says the company operated 22 retail outlets selling women’s clothing and accessories under the Jean Jones and Platform brands. A number of stores were closed before the liquidators were appointed leaving 16 stores still operating. Since the liquidator was appointed 12 stores have been closed including Jean Jones in Picton Street, Howick. “The total amount owing to all creditors of the company, including secured and preferential creditors, is approximately $2.4 million,” Ms Atkins told the Times.

There are 10 listed on the HVA’s website. A Jean Jones store opened at the Botany Town Centre in 2001. However it closed in 2005 and Desiree Clark, senior marketing manager at BTC, says she is not certain about the reason the Botany store was closed at that time. According to the Liquidators First Report, ANZ Bank of New Zealand is a secured creditor, owed $669,521. Preferential creditors include employees’ wages and holiday pay of $100,372, and the IRD for PAYE and GST worth $399,203. ➤ Turn to Page 3

“These figures are estimates and are subject to verification and confirmation. We have no additional comments to make at this stage, nor anything in particular in regard to the Howick store.” Jenny Foster, manager of the Howick Village Association says the HVA had no knowledge of Jean Jones closure until members read the news on the internet and saw the store’s doors closed. “It is sad to see any business faced with this action,” she says. “However we have many other wonderful ladies’ clothing stores in the village.”
