tion. Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) went on trial earlier this month in the High Court at Auckland for burning and killing the 21-yearold Botany Pak’nSave worker. Detective Inspector Dave Lynch of Counties Manukau Police says the guilty verdict is a “great result for Mr Prasad’s

2013. He withdrew $30,050, his life savings, while Kumar looked on. Throughout the course of the trial, the Crown presented a range of evidence from CCTV footage and bank transactions to phone records as well as called upon nearly 70 witnesses to testify. ➤ Turn to Page 3

he number of crimes committed in east Auckland is raising questions among concerned locals. Counties Manukau East Police’s latest statistics show that the district experienced a rise in burglaries, robberies, public place assaults and stolen vehicles compared to the same period last year. Burglaries increased by nearly 20 per cent, robberies by more than 35 per cent, public place assaults by 25 per cent and stolen vehicles have spiked 41 per cent. It contrasts with national crime data released yesterday showing

recorded crime dropped. A frustrated Pakuranga business owner and local who did not want to be named says he was left with nearly $10,000 worth of damage as a result of break-ins in the past year. “I want to ďŹ nd out if there is an inquiry going into crime in this area. Are things getting worse or is it just me? And is something being done about it?â€? Howick local Gary Bielby says his son’s car was stolen from Lloyd Elsmore Park last Tuesday, prompting him to look into the number of vehicles stolen in Counties Manukau over the past six months. “It was more than 400. I was astounded with the number – it’s a huge number and more often than not the cars are never recovered so there are obviously people doing it for a living. He says the Mazda Familia 4WD

station wagon that was taken had been in his family for 25 years. “It was quite a unique high spec vehicle in very, very good condition. The gearbox was probably worth $1500. Detective senior sergeant Darrell Harpur, head of Counties Manukau East Police’s criminal investigation branch (CIB) says the police are aware of the community’s concerns and are doing all they can to combat crime. “Volume crime has been a huge priority for us.
