ou just know a marriage is likely to go the distance when the dining table is transformed into a bench for vintage car motor parts not too long after the knot’s been tied.

John Nicholson, 85, and wife Anne, 84, exchanged vows in St Peter’s Anglican Church in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1959.

Almost 60 years later the couple, from their Tuscany Estates home high up above Flat Bush with sweeping views right out to the Waitemata Harbour, are happy with their lot.

They’re with daughter-inlaw Bronwen who is married to their eldest son Bruce, and who have the main house adjoining the granny flat.

With their 60th wedding anniversary – their diamond celebration – looming on April 24, Anne lets a couple of clues slip as to how they like to approach life, even with such a milestone just around the corner. ”We just don’t want any fuss,” she says.

And so that’s the way the anniversary celebrations will be, a family affair only.

Anne and John Nicholson celebrated 60 years of marriage on April 24.

Jo’burg to Durban over three days (a trip that would take around eight hours today).

When the boys were old enough they got a Reo vintage car each while the steam trucks were sold to a wealthy hobbyist in Newcastle, Australia.

When John retired, he was finally able to immerse himself in his beloved steam trains working on the Banana Express, narrow gauge trains in Port Shepston, seven days a week.

They have four grandsons Warren, Grant, Rowan and Tate – all boys, a Nicholson trait, they’re certain - and step-granddaughter Olivia.

John, an engineer (in sales but also working in manufacturing), suggested the idea of a move to New Zealand after Bruce had moved with his family earlier since they considered South Africa

unsafe to raise their boys.

“We weren’t happy on the coast,” says Anne.

“We’d done a lot of travelling and the highlight was New Zealand,” John elaborates.

They made their move to New Zealand in 2002, two years after their first visit.

Ian moved to Australia in 1999. Bruce and Bronwen made their move with their three young sons in 1998.

Fantastic memories.

Aotearoa is very much home now. Anne says: “I feel like I’ve been here all my life.

We feel more secure and happier.”

News bites Workplace death Police attended a workplace incident on Cryers Road, East Tamaki on April 17. Police and emergency services were notified shortly before 12pm. Police confirmed a man died at the scene.

larly planned. “It was a small affair in the late afternoon, early evening,” she recalls.

“I had a grandfather who was very ill. We had a small wedding and cocktails in Auckland Park (Johannesburg).”

The key to their happiness has always been the family, their sons Bruce and Ian (who lives with wife Alison in Australia). “At first, when you’ve got children, that’s the bit you remember,” she says.

“And when they got married and they started having children, it’s made our lives very full.

“I think once you’re married, children become very important, your focal point.”

There were diversions of course. Anne loved her golf and John was mad on vintage cars.

Says Anne: “When we first got married it was vintage cars. He used my dining table for dismantling and repairing engines. I remember we had two vintage cars, a 1927 and 1930 Reo and an old Austin.”

They completed vintage car rallies, once to Durban when Bruce was just three months old.

“He spent four days in the dicky seat – he would just sleep,” says John.

“Steam trains were a big part of our life travelling the extent of South Africa on organised trips with family and friends making for wonderful memories “We would do five or six day steam train trips with the boys.”

Then came Sentinel steam trucks, which were in short supply, into which John invested time and money.

Day trips into downtown Johannesburg in the steam truck, blowing the steam whistle in traffic, made for much laughter and curious looks as smoke bellowed out the chimney.

Scars that will never heal A

Popular east Auckland music festival Freqs Out East was put on hold for a couple minutes during the event so that $1000 could be handed over to Lifeline.

Music festival stopped to talk about youth suicide prevention It’s not often a music festival cuts the music midway through.

But when Freqs Out East founder Dan Hesson paused the music festival recently, it was for a very good cause.

The popular music festival in Highbrook was put on hold for a couple minutes so that Hesson could talk about mental illness and youth suicide. “I’ve been affected by suicide and depression as many of us have in New Zealand,” he says.

“For a long time I’ve wanted to in a little way help people find a way out of dark times, to just open up and talk about how they are feeling.”

He said his business

Freq Music and Freqs Out East was the perfect platform to spread a message of support to people struggling with mental illness and show support for charities that work tirelessly to help them through it.

“I wanted to remind people that they are not alone and that there is support out there for them.

On behalf of Freqs Out East and VAPO, Hesson handed over a $1000 donation to Lifeline, a free crisis helpline proving confidential support from counsellors and trained volunteers.

“This is not a lot but everything helps,” he says.

“These guys save lives by just being there for

people. They receive eight at risk suicide calls per day. To give you an idea [the $1000] will pay for 40 calls [to support those suffering from depression]” Now Hesson says he wants to start a movement, encouraging other promoters, club owners, DJ’s sound companies, brands and anyone in our industry to spread awareness of depression and youth suicide rates.

“We have so many young people we can reach, why not use that to remind them that there are people around them who are willing to listen, to help,” Hesson says.

nzac Day has been a busy one for Year 8 Mission Heights Junior College (MHJC) student Saniya Lal. The Flat Bush resident has been selected in the (12-18 age group) as the winner of the Annual Howick RSA Anzac Day speech competition from around 200 entries.

Saniya and Year 10 fellow student from MHJC, Andrew Ma, have been invited to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to read a poem where students were asked to examine the idea of peace by reflecting on the theme: `War is over… if you want it’. Both the students’ pieces were chosen from more 200 entries.

An abridged version Saniya Lal’s speech delivered at Stockade Hill It has been more than a century since the First World War ended. The wounds it inflicted now fade into scars. Scars that will never heal. Although the war has long since ended physically for some, the war never ends mentally. For some, the real battle is only beginning. Being shell-shocked was a common occurrence amongst men who fought for their country.

These days being shellshocked is referred to as PTSD.

Inescapable nightmares that take them back to the battlefield.

Soldiers who can only watch as their friends are shot.

Soldiers who do come back, never come back as themselves.

They remain only a shell left behind, nothing left of the person before the war.

The soldiers who died and fought to save us, the future of Aotearoa. New Zealand’s population was just over one million in 1914 and due to the number of people who died during and after the war due to sustained injuries, 58 per cent of New Zealand’s population was wiped because of one war.

Those who paid the ultimate price of their lives. They paid it so that we can live the lives that we do. The fallen soldiers fought for us, so Aotearoa can stay free so we can live in freedom and peace.

Our fallen soldiers fought with a desire for history not to be repeated. To bring us peace they fought and fell. These soldiers gave up their hopes and dreams to give us a peaceful nation to live in. They destroyed a world of darkness and created a world of light and peace. We must keep this light burning in our world. We must aim to be a light for others to bring them peace. Those who fell shall never grow old, never be forgotten for we will remember them and their sacrifices. Lest we forget.

Kris’s war service recognised Pakuranga’s Emma Devlin was determined to win recognition for her grandfather Kristinn Steingrimsson for his service during WWII. From Iceland, he had a long and amazing life, arriving in NZ then before meeting his wife Joyce and going farming in the Waikato before retiring in Whangaparaoa. His daughter tells the story.

By BRENDA STEINGRIMSSON Kristinn Steingrimsson (95) was honoured by the Government of Norway at the Stamford Plaza Hotel by the Royal Consulate of Norway for his service during WWII. Kris was the second ever Icelander to settle in New Zealand in 1950.

Kris worked as a merchant seaman and played a vital part in the Second World War. Through his duty of transporting essential food supplies from Iceland to England over a three year period, he contributed in keeping England alive during this crucial time in history.

Like thousands of other merchant seaman, Kristinn Steingrimsson risked his life aboard Sverrir EA 20 (ships name, number) travelling across the Atlantic Ocean – a high risk zone for three years.

During 2016, 2017 Kris and his granddaughter Emma (who also published his life story) spent months sourcing and researching evidence of Kris’s war involvement and compiled a portfolio of historical documentation /proof of service which they sent to various government departments worldwide seeking recognition.

After much rejection and waiting – due to Iceland’s role in WWII being widely unknown – the Ministry of Defence of Norway (Iceland’s neighbouring nation) accepted Emma’s unique application and confirmed they would be honouring Kris with the “WWII Commemorative medal”.

Kristinn was awarded the ‘WWII Commemorative medal’ and diploma certificate from Captain John Robinson, NZ Consulate for Norway, the day after his 95th Birthday at a ceremony at the Stamford Plaza in Auckland (October 2017).

It was thrilling for Kristinn and his family that he could finally be recognised for his efforts in the war.

The route Icelandic merchant ships travelled, across the Atlantic Ocean was a high-risk zone during 1942-44 due to the dangerous attacks faced from submarines, mines, armed raiders and destroyers. On top of these hazards were the extremely treacherous and freezing weather conditions which Icelandic ships had to battle day-in and day-out making for a challenging journey.

Hundreds of Icelandic men lost their lives. They were mostly fishermen and merchant seamen who provided muchneeded fish products to Britain at a time of a national food shortage.

The contribution of foreign seamen is one significant aspect of merchant history that has been long-neglected.

Kristinn Steingrimsson was one of these thousands of men who may have been from a foreign country such as Iceland but nonetheless was a part of supporting Britain and keeping the Allies functioning during WWII. Sadly, Kris passed away at the end of 2018. He is survived by his wife Joyce Steingrimsson and four daughters and four adult grandchildren.

The helicopter attracted a good deal of attention.

Old trees out, new trees in T

he helicopter and tree felling crews on Pigeon Mountain in Half Moon Bay attracted a lot of attention from neighbours last Tuesday.

Work started this month on a programme to restore native vegetation and habitat for native wildlife on Ohuiarangi [Pigeon Mountain].

Around 112 exotic trees, including pest species, are being removed and more than 30,000 new native shrubs and trees will be planted in selected locations.

It became known as Pigeon Mountain in early European times for the numerous kereru or native pigeon that lived on the mountain, and the planting programme will include tree and plant species that are hoped will encourage kereru

back to the mountain in the future.

Arborists began the tree removal on April 8, which is expected to take around 20 days to complete.

From May to August this year 500 native shrubs will be planted on the summit terraces and another 1200 native shrubs and trees around the quarry slope areas of the mountain.

Some of the 30,000 new native shrubs and trees being added around the wetland ecological area on the western side of Pigeon Mountain Road will be planted this Autumn, and the remaining over 2020-2021.

Construction starts on $1.4b Eastern Busway H

igh frequency, rapid transit bus travel for East Auckland is a step closer with construction underway for the first stage of the Eastern Busway project.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Mayor Phil Goff have joined Auckland Transport and NZ Transport Agency officials, Mana Whenua and the local community to mark the start of construction for the first stage of the busway between Panmure and Pakuranga.

Goff says the $1.4b busway will bring congestion-free, high frequency buses to one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas.

“The Eastern Busway is a game changer for east Auckland. It will significantly reduce journey times, ease congestion, provide local residents with a modern, reliable public transport system and unlock the economic potential of east Auckland.

“Once complete, residents in Howick and Botany will see travel times by bus and train into the city slashed by up to a third and a separated cycleway will for the first time allow bike and scooter riders to travel around east Auckland safely.

“The Eastern busway is transformational for Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and beyond.

We’ve been able to speed-up its construction thanks to the regional fuel tax and I look forward to continuing to hit construction milestones earlier than would otherwise have been possible,” says Goff.

Twyford says this project is a great example of central and local government working together through the 10-year Auckland Transport Alignment Project to unlock Auckland’s potential. “The work starting means we are another step closer to having a congestionfree network,” he says. ”The Government, through the NZ Transport Agency, is investing a record $3.1 billion over three years in public transport to build network capacity and improve the frequency of services.”

“AMETI will connect the growing population of east Auckland into Auckland’s strategic transport network, providing better connections, faster journey times and more travel choices,” says the Transport Agency’s Director of Regional Relationships for the Upper North Island, Steve Mutton.

The first stage will include turning Panmure roundabout into a safer, signalised intersection, construction of the busway along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road, a new bridge across Tamaki River, shared cycling and walking paths, a new reserve at the end of Bridge Street in Panmure along with improvements for general traffic at key intersections.

Major work will start at Easter at the roundabout with construction progressing along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road over a two year period.

Measures are being put in place to assist the travelling

public during the construction phase, including additional express bus services between Howick, Pakuranga and Panmure Station, carrying out intensive work during periods of lower traffic volumes and ensuring that all traffic lanes will be maintained for the majority of work.

Future stages of the Eastern Busway between Pakuranga and Botany, including the Reeves Road Flyover, are currently entering the consenting process with construction due to start in 2022.

Meanwhile, Botany MP JamiLee Ross says he’s pleased to see construction is now under way on the first stage of the muchneeded AMETI Eastern Busway.

Ross was among the people on hand this week for the first sodturning on the project. “I’ve supported this project since we first discussed it on the Manukau City Council in 2004,” Ross says.

“This has been a long time in the making and I’m glad the local community is now seeing physical progress on this muchneeded busway.”

The logical next step is to create a rapid transit busway along Te Irirangi Drive that will help to form a connection between Auckland Airport and Flat Bush, Botany, and Howick.

“It’s good to see the current Government carrying on with the work we started.

“I will keep working with Transport Minister Phil Twyford on future public transport plans for our area.”

As the Easter and Anzac weeks are almost at an end, the Prime Minister’s dumping of a capital gains tax proposal already seems like old news.

But what isn’t old news is the structure of our Parliament, where smaller political players can have great influence that seems out of proportion to their size.

In this case, one component part of the Government, New Zealand First, effectively killed the capital gains tax recommendation, even though Labour and the Greens were entrenched in their support for it.

Winston was right to oppose a capital gains tax. The policy was to be revenue-neutral, meaning implementing the tax would have brought in no extra income for the Government.

Why anyone would want to make our relatively simple tax system more complex for no

appreciable gain is something I can’t understand.

The uncertainty it would have created, as well as the anti-investment signals it sent, also weren’t good for our wider economy.

But the more important political point worth observing is the high level of influence a relatively small group of voters can have on policy outcomes.

This is nothing new.

For six of the almost nine years John Key walked the corridors of Parliament, he governed with effectively a one-seat majority. At any point in time a single MP could hold up policy, or win gains for their local electorate.

Similar situations happened to Helen Clark and Jenny Shipley before him.

We hardly noticed this though because Key was a master of political management,

MP for Botany the likes of which the centreright of politics now sorely misses.

Our electoral system puts single MPs or smaller parties in prime position to support their constituencies. New Zealand First is now sticking up for the people who voted for them.

Attempts to change our electoral system failed in 2011, so this phenomenon won’t differ while we have MMP. Voters at the next general election will decide which individuals or political parties are able to deliver funding or policy wins for the people they represent. This right of voters can be used wisely and strategically.

Howick College regional winners

T

he Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival, Regional Competition Auckland South and East, was hosted by Botany Downs Secondary College on Saturday April 6.

All schools in the region were invited to attend and take part in the annual festival that celebrates the work of William Shakespeare. (SGCNZ) is a life skills enhancing organisation through Shakespeare.

It interacts and collaborates with Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

This year Howick College entered a 15-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet directed by Head of Drama, Mrs Jilly Dryen.

The group, made up of Year 11 and 12 students, explored the age old themes of madness, revenge and human relationships, particularly the impact Hamlet has on his beloved Ophelia.

Despite competing against an array of talented and experienced teams, the drama students from Howick College were thrilled to be announced as winners of the regional competition.

The talented actors from Howick College are now preparing themselves to take their piece to the National Festival in Wellington over Queen’s Birthday Weekend where the will compete against schools from around the country.

This is a five-day intensive programme of workshops and rehearsals that will culminate in public performances on June 2 and 3.

A new set of free resources aims to provide event organisers with extra support.

The New Zealand Book Council’s Event Support Kit offers downloadable resources including checklists, templates and strategies for event organisers.

It also includes links to existing Book Council resources, such as the extensive Writers File and an Event Calendar for free listing of literary events.

Book Council CEO Jo Cribb says the support kit is a response to the number of emerging festivals showcasing local authors and their books. “Festivals can be a great way of exposing new audiences to authors. We are especially supportive of events that showcase the diversity of New Zealand writers and seek to reach new or poorly served audiences,” she says.

“Over the years, the Book Council has supported many

festivals and book events and in doing so we’ve learnt about what might help their organisers. We hope event organisers will find these resources useful.”

Programmes manager Kathryn Carmody brings extensive event management experience to her role council.

She hopes the toolkit will give new event organisers ideas and reassurance and remind experienced event organisers to reach out to others in the sector.

“We want to give people who are starting out some ideas about how other people organise stuff.

For people who are doing this work all the time, hopefully this will inspire them to reach out to others to build even more robust networks between themselves than they are currently,” says Kathryn.

Amazing day for an amazing race N

Clevedon School’s head girl Jaymee Davies and head boy Jack Petherick came up with the idea for an Amazing Race as a way to bridge the gap between the senior and junior school.

ot even bucket loads of rain could dampen the mood as almost 400 students gathered to take part in Clevedon School’s first Amazing Race.

And it’s all thanks to two determined students.

Clevedon School’s head girl Jaymee Davies and head boy Jack Petherick came up with the idea for an Amazing Race as a way to bridge the gap between the senior and junior school.

“We thought getting everyone to take part in some sort of obstacle course would be a fun way to get to know one another,” says Jaymee.

They had originally planned to wait until term four but following the Christchurch terror attacks, Jaymee and Jack felt there was no better time to show unity within the school.

The concept was simple – each senior school student would be paired with a junior student and they would complete the course together.

But behind the scenes Jaymee and Jack were hard at work developing eight challenges to make up the Amazing race.

There were obstacle courses, problem solving stations and memory games.

The event was entirely student-led and unsponsored, so the pair had to approach community members for donations.

Each student was given a gift thanking them for their participation, and prizes for winners were donated by local businesses.

They were helped by the school caretaker to set up the amazing race.

“We asked the students to dress up as silly as they wanted to bring spirit to the event,” says Jack.

“Other students have thanked us, telling us how fun it was,” says Jaymee.

The pair says the senior students were wonderful, many running the course twice to ensure all junior students, who number almost double the senior school, got a chance to take part.

“Everyone loved being involved and worked really hard to make the day special,” says Jack.

Outrageous feminist web series ‘Butt Dial’ coming to TVNZ TVNZ’s New Blood innovative initiative is redefining feminism on-screen with Butt Dial web series, a microseries that is written and directed by Anna Duckworth of Candlelit Pictures. The series was produced by Pakuranga’s Sandani Hiranya.

The show stars Aria Dehar “Audiences have who plays Ari (left) and demanded fresh content Tomai Ihaia who plays Mo. and diverse representation that breaks apart false, archetypal depictions of women and that is exactly what Butt Dial will be delivering,” Candlelit Pictures, a Kiwi film production company, said.

“This all female cast, crew and production, directed

by Duckworth during the third trimester of her pregnancy, is an ode to modern feminism.”

Butt Dial is an outrageous feminist web series, starring Aria Dehar and Tomai Ihaia, which explores the intimate, relatable and vulgar observations between two best friends as they routinely video-call each other while doing their ‘business’ on the toilet.

In her own words, Butt Dial was a means for Duckworth “to pull back the curtain on real modern friendships and crack open some taboos about just day-to-day experiences”.

Gun buy back

Maybe the guns collected by the NZ Police could be kept for their own use or on sold to the NZ Army or overseas Police or Armed Forces at a reduced price to gain back some of the $200 million which it has been suggested our Government - i.e. us taxpayers – will have to pay for the buy back?

If they are on sold at half price, we would have a saving of $100m, which could go a long way towards health care or education in our country, both of which are crying out for money.

Her comments aren’t helping I was saddened to see that you chose to publish the letter from Margaret Scott supporting Israel Folau’s anti-gay comments (April 18).

Printing comments in your paper such as “It isn’t just gay, but all that we do wrong one way or another” is not going to help our society to become more accepting of people’s differences.

Given recent events in New Zealand, when we have seen an individual feel he has a right to condemn and murder others because they have a different belief system to him, surely the media has a duty not to encourage views which denounce groups of people because of their religion, race or sexual orientation.

I’m sure that Margaret Scott’s views came from a deep-seated religious faith but supporting comments which liken being gay to being a thief or an adulterer is misunderstanding a harmless life choice.

In fact, it is not a choice.

Air cadets donation On Tuesday April 9, No 40 (Howick) Squadron, Air Training Corps hosted Counsellor Sharon Stewart QSM and Leigh Dixon who made a very generous donation of $1500 to the Squadron.

Cr Stewart and Mr Dixon are the President and Secretary respectively of the Military Tattoo Association which is in the process of dissolution.

The Military Tattoo Association was responsible for the organisation and management of the popular Howick Military Tattoos that traditionally ran at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

Cr Stewart, a long-time supporter of the Howick Air Cadets, believed the Squadron would be an ideal benefactor for the remaining funds held by the Association.

Cadet Unit Commander Flight Lieutenant Matthew Jackson graciously acknowledged the donation as it would greatly assist with the operational budget of the squadron and would provide a real benefit to cadet training.

Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces

How about some consistency In response to Margaret Scott’s letter about Folau (Times, April 18), there are some points which she appears to have missed in both her letter to the Times and the same to the Herald.

First, where is her concern for the mental health of the many, possibly naive, youngsters who admire Folau?

Surely in this day and age we need to be sensitive to what is being said that can have a real impact on others.

Second, as others have pointed out, how does she explain Folau’s cherry picking of biblical instructions.

No homosexuality? No fornicating etc etc are all very well. I still haven’t seen any consideration from Folau or from Margaret Scott about the status of slavery in their world, or of tattoos, or of daring to wear different fabrics.

I find it difficult to imagine that Margaret Scott, as a woman refrains from speaking in church.

Even if her church does not accept women in their clergy, surely they have women represented on various committees, presenting reports, maybe providing bible readings and a range of other activities which are the norm in the modern context, modern context being a key consideration in all these matters.

This nonsense where Folau is supported in being so offensive, and is supported in being selective in his comments, is in itself offensive and the antithesis of how a Christian community would expect to live.

Banning weapons

Isn’t it about time our beloved PM got some balance in ‘ban the guns’ mantra?

It is reported that ‘she expressed shock at how easy it is to get destructive weapons in NZ’.

What about knives, cars, bombs, chemicals, even drones as seriously destructive weapons?

Are these going to be classified as destructive weapons also?

For they are destructive weapons in the wrong hands.

Guns are made of metal and wood, they are material, and as such have no built-in intelligence. But people do.

Give them a car knife or gun and they can use it for evil purposes.

We have to confront the evil in our community in the minds of men and women.

That is something about which our society is rather blind.

Evil has its origins in the supernatural realm which demands of us a thorough education renewal, especially in our knowledge of the supernatural.

My plea is to tackle the evil mindset first, it would be a long term effort, not some quick-fix law change which avoids the underlying cause.

REINZ welcomes backdown on CGT T

he Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the announcement from the Prime Minister that Labour will not be adopting a capital gains tax (CGT), following feedback from the majority of New Zealanders that they do not believe in a capital gains tax.

Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “As an industry we had grave concerns that a capital gains tax could push up house prices even further - especially when we look at examples of other OECD countries that introduces CGT such as South Africa and Australia and have seen housing affordability decline in those countries.

“Therefore, we welcome today’s (April 17) announcement from the Prime Minister that Labour will not be looking to proceed with any of the Tax Working Group’s rec-

ommendations and instead focus on the wider issues affecting New Zealanders.

“We also welcome the fact that Government will look at other areas of the tax system that could be fairer and look forward to engaging and consulting with the Government over these areas they wish to address in the coming months.

“Those who own lifestyle blocks will no doubt be particularly pleased with today’s announcement, as they were one of the few communities facing a capital gains tax on the sale of their own home on land over 4500 square metres.

“We hope today’s announcement will bring more certainty for the real estate industry as feedback from buyers and sellers has been unanimous in their uncertainty ahead of today’s announcement.”

In the first quarter of 2019, first home buyers (FHBs) and mortgaged multiple property owners (investors) each accounted for 24 per cent of property purchases.

For a long period of time, investors had a much larger market share, but LVR III (40 per cent deposit) dampened their activity from October 2016 and meanwhile FHBs have slowly and surely kept raising their presence.

This is not to say that there is always direct competition between the two groups, or that an investor buying is always locking out a FHB (or vice versa).

But it’s still interesting that their market shares are similar and these may well continue to be the two groups to watch for the rest of 2019.

Kelvin Davidson, a senior property economist at real estate property data company CoreLogic says, “The Q1 data for Buyer Classification is now complete and it confirms that ‘movers’ (existing owner occupiers) are less active than in the past, with first home buyers (FHBs) and mortgaged multiple property owners (MPOs) the key groups of interest at present.

“Over the first three months of the year, ‘movers’ accounted for 27 per cent of property purchases, which is down a touch from 28 per cent a year ago and from 29 per cent in Q1 2017.

High-income households often have resources and support that assists them to achieve homeownership. However, for lower-income families, it is far more challenging. Norman-Hewlett strikes gold Akuhata Norman-Hewlett is just 11 but is already making his mark in archery.

Norman-Hewlett has just competed in the World Indoor Archery Championships (WIAC 2019) at ASB Arena in Wellington and came first taking the gold medal and becoming a world champion for his division.

A Year 7 student at Pakuranga Intermediate (and former student of Elm Park School), he has been doing archery since he was 8.

Norman-Hewlett, who shoots a compound bow, has been

competing in numerous minor tournaments both locally and across the country since 2017.

“He loves archery and his goal is to one day represent New Zealand,” his mum Adrienne Norman said.

In January he competed at the 76th National Archery Championship held at Rongomai Park in Flat Bush and came first winning the National title for his division. He has recently shot scores needed to qualify for selection for the NZ TransTasman Archery Team. This event will be held in Auckland in July 2019.

Parents might know it better as: Brown bear, brown bear what do you see?

The famous children’s book is just as popular in Arabic as in English, and at Botany Library you can check out both.

When senior community engagement librarian Yessar Barakat saw a growing population of Arabic-speaking people in her neighbourhood, she set about doing something about it.

With the help of Auckland Central Library, there was soon a small selection of books in Arabic available on Botany’s shelves.

All Yessar had to do then was

get Arabic-speakers to come in and borrow them.

“It was mostly people from Iraq arriving but there were Jordanians, people from Somalia and Sudan, Egyptians, and some from Lebanon too,” she says.

The word went out, and before long there were not only books to borrow, but an adult book club meeting twice a month, and story time in Arabic for children.

“Once a month all the adults get together and talk about our own reading, and at another time we talk about a book we’ve all read,” Yessar says.

It’s mostly women joining the reading club, but the men can be relied on to take over the café

Sunday mornings are reserved for the children, and twice a month they meet for fun activities, stories and to use their language.

“It’s just a bit of fun, with something interesting to do. The main thing is to get them using the language. We want them to be conversational, because young people tend to learn English more easily, having Arabic means generational barriers can be broken down.”

Silver Ferns greatest

P

icking the best all-time Silver Ferns netball team is an intriguing exercise which is bound to be fiercely debated.

Although I don’t claim expertise on the subject, I offer my starting seven: Irene van Dyk (GS), Maria Folau (GA), Temepara Bailey (WA), Sandra Edge (C), Rita Fatialofa (WD), Bernice Mene ( GD), Casey Kopua (GK).

For accuracy no one can beat van Dyk and Folau though the clever court work of Joan Harnett and Margaret Forsyth made both incredibly talented goal attacks.

Neither, however, could shoot the long distance goals Folau does.

In the late 1960s I saw Canterbury’s Harnett intercept on the halfway, twist a full turn while airborne and send a perfect pass to Colleen McMaster under the goal before her feet touched the ground.

The accurate McMaster slotted the goal as the Judy Blair captained Canterbury went on to beat a strong Australian national team by 15 points.

Harnett was an attractive superstar who moved with the grace of a ballet dancer.

With her pleasant personality and incredible shooting prowess, former South African representative van Dyk’s decision to migrate was a massive boost for New Zealand netball.

Unlike Folau, she was not a long

range shooter, but was very good at holding her ground and slotting goals with pinpoint accuracy near the posts.

Although she lacked height, former television Dancing with the Stars winner, Bailey was a quick and clever player who fed her goal circle with lovely passes. She still does although at 43 she doesn’t have the speed and stamina she once did.

Her nearest challenger would be the fiercely competitive Laura Langman who remains super fit.

Whereas Bailey can play wing attack and centre with equal ability, Langman can do both as well as wing defence where she made her debut for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic with another outstanding teenager in Casey Williams, now Kopua.

There have been some very good centres but none to compare with the speedy Sandra Edge (nee Mallett) who was an absolute champion at making spectacular intercepts and feeding team-mates.

Likewise there have been many fine wing defences but none as tough as Rita Fatialofa who had surprising speed for such a big woman. Otago’s Lesley Rumball and Langman also shone in that position.

Bernice Mene had great genes, being the daughter of Canterbury decathlon champion Mene Mene and former NZ women’s javelin champion and record-holder Sally Flynn.

An intelligent goal defence who married Black Caps cricketer Dion Nash, she read the game beautifully when making intercepts at goal defence.

The same could be said for Kopua whose fierce determination, spring-heeled leaps and superb timing made her the perfect goal keep when at her peak.

Mene’s strongest challenge for the goal defence berth would be Waimarama Taumaunu who brought the ball up the court strongly and became an outstanding Silver Ferns netball coach.

Ameliaranne Ekenasi and brilliant 19-year-old Aliyah Dunn are Silver Ferns shooter who combine beautifully for the Central Pulse.

Dunn had a 100 per cent success rate in one game when slotting over 30 goals and regularly goes beyond 90 per cent.

Meanwhile watch out for amazing Grace Nweke who, at age 17 and 1.93m tall, has a vertical leap that has countered the best efforts of such experienced defenders as Kopua and Katrina Rore to contain her.

Rising basketball star trains with Adams It’s not every day on the basketball court you have an NBA player giving you pointers.

But for Saint Kentigern College student Shalom Broughton, this was his reality.

The 17-year-old basketball player was selected for a basketball training camp with New Zealand-born NBA basketball player Steven Adams.

The camp is part of Maori Television’s new series Holding Court, which follows NBA star Steven Adams as he coaches and mentors Kiwi kids.

Shalom was selected to take part in the two day camp as the top basketball player at St Kentigern College and he says he feels privileged to have been given the opportunity.

“Being mentored by Steven Adams is so valuable in helping me grow and succeed as an athlete,” he says.

Shalom took part in three two-hour sessions a day, playing with the best high school basketball players across the country.

The keen athlete says he learned many American training techniques that aren’t often taught in New

“We have this thing back home [in Tauranga] called Pathways that is through Steven Adams, so I’d had some training with him before through that which meant I was pretty calm meeting him at the camp,” Shalom says.

“The first time I met him I was so nervous. I didn’t know how to approach him. But he’s super down to earth and chill.”

While being in front of the camera took some getting used to for Shalom, he says it was worth it.
