A

n arsonist started the fire that consumed a Flat Bush house earmarked for demolition, officials believe. Fire fighters were called to the vacant property – which is illegally used as a rubbish dumping site – on Flat Bush School Road at 3.39pm on Saturday afternoon. Senior fire risk management officer for Counties Manukau, Robert Watson, who attended the scene, says the blaze had been

burning for some time before it was noticed. “It’s been vacant and unoccupied so the site’s been used for dumping. There’s a lot of rubbish there and somebody’s lit it. It’s a deliberately lit fire.” Mr Watson says it was a very destructive fire that could not have been caused by a derelict site with no electrical or heating sources. There are other buildings in the area scheduled to be cleared for new housing and being illegally

used as dumping sites. It is not the first abandoned house fire Mr Watson has attended in the vicinity but the first in recent times. In this case, the house was completely destroyed, Mr Watson says. “It made life for demolition crew easy. It was a large two storey house. The upper half was completely gone and half of the ground level was burnt. The fire had spread to surrounding trees and grass.

A woman reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. Records indicated the ambulance had been stood down and that the woman had gone to the East Care Accident & Medical Clinic on Botany Road. Police say the fire is being treated as suspicious but further forensic testing is needed. People with information can contact detective sergeant Dean Batey on 250-3014 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.

By FARIDA MASTER Isn’t it too dangerous? It’s the first question people asked Bridget Dennison, the 17-year-old tramper who walked the Te Araroa trail for 45 days during the school holidays. The Howick College student suffered trials and tribulations on her 900km trek. She was almost swept away in the treacherous Taramakau river and was saved by a Swedish tramper; fell off a rock and landed on her backpack; was in great pain and cried her way through the first two days wondering why she had taken on the uphill task. But, she says, she wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. Two years ago, Bridget had never been tramping, much less out in the wild.
