IN THE NIC’ OF TIME: Just as summer is about to descend on us, former local lad and acclaimed chef, Nic Watt, has opened the doors to a new Tamaki Drive restaurant. The arrival of Akarana Eatery is long overdue – there is no place quite like this waterfront venue to provide unobstructed, close up views of the harbour.

Located within the new Hyundai Marine Sports Centre, city-side of Okahu Bay, the site is sun-drenched with the smell of salt in the air. Appropriately, Nic and his team have created a predominantly Euro-Japanese menu dominated by fresh seafood flavours – read more on pages 18-19.

Dining on the menu Some EastLife readers may remember my era of dining pages in the Howick and Pakuranga Times. These days I work with the magazines and seldom chat about dining but this month I’m glad to talk once more about food – the meal I missed and the one I didn’t!

Perhaps it’s a good thing I’m not eating out quite so much – for the figure that is! On the other hand I have missed sharing my fun nights out – who could forget the night my family set out on the back of a dispute to celebrate husband’s birthday at Windross, circa 1998, I’ll never forget the diplomacy of the then Danish owner who perceived our somewhat dark mood and, in a flash, presented us with delicious cocktails. These put us all in a very merry mood.

So, as you may well realise, I regret the passing from my life of lobster biqsue, Moroccan lamb tagine and steamed hapuka on mussel risotto cake with warm baby leek salad.

Then there were the special events like that of a ‘ghostly’ season when Bell House transformed into Tremaine Hall, scene of mysterious happenings some 80 years previously. Hosted by the talented Crawley family, formerly

One look and I was salivating over the butternut tortellini with spinach, ricotta, pinenuts and burnt sage butter; Bouillabaisse with crab, prawns, cockles, mussels, snapper, calamari, tomato and pernod and, for dessert, espresso cream with espresso granita, cream cheese sorbet and caramelised chocolate.

On the other hand, I have tasted the refreshing fare at newly opened Akarana Eatery on Tamaki Drive – a sensational venue full of foodie promise. You can read all about the former local lad behind this winner on pages 18-19 and you can even attempt one of his beer-based recipes (page 35).

I was dead keep to see what else owners Sarah and Daniel Morini had cooked up. A bit of research revealed Daniel (formerly a head chef at SPQR) was of Maori and Italian descent and had learnt the art of Italian cooking from his father, an Italian chef.

And with that, I hope readers are readying themselves to vote in the local body election – personally, I’m not too grabbed by any of the mayoral candidates, and I’d love to see some fresh faces all round, but that’s just me. In the meantime, grab a cuppa and enjoy EastLife!

‘Oh goody’, I thought but then the heartbreak. Man about the house was sent for an echocardiogram ahead of a knee replacement. The appointment coincided with the Morell lunch. Because I had to drive, there went lunch – straight into someone else’s tummy!

So, having put those happy days behind me, I was surprised to receive an invitation to lunch at Morell Bistro, Remuera which was launching a new menu.

But, my motto is: never let a doctor’s bad news keep you down.

I asked to see the full menu and immediately spotted crayfish ravioli with crème fraiche, dill, truffle salt and chive butter sauce!

That was enough to pencil a dining date on my calendar. So, it’s still, Morell Bistro here we come.

The Howick Singers is a 38-strong women’s choir which this year celebrated its 40th anniversary. As the year counts down to Christmas the choir is preparing for its annual Christmas concert at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Vincent St, Howick on Friday, December 6, marking the end of 12 months of celebrations. EastLife talked to conductor, Lynne Anderson about the choir – its past, present and future.

The Howick Singers started in 1979, how did it come about and how many foundation members still sing with the choir?

The Howick Operatic Society had just completed a season of Brigadoon and a number of chorus members expressed an interest in carrying on singing as a group instead of simply waiting on rehearsals for the next show. As I had trained the chorus I was approached to lead the group. I clearly remember the first gathering; a large number of women turned up to the first meeting and one solitary man. I did suggest he might like to drum up more men but he politely declined and departed. The rest, as they say, is history! We have two foundation members who have been there from the beginning and collectively we have more than 400 years of choral singing in the group.

You say it had its roots in the former Howick Operatic Society (now Harlequin Theatre); are some members still active in Harlequin too?

We have evolved as choir and I am not aware of any choir members who are still involved personally but I know, in the past, there have been children and grandchildren who have carried on the tradition.

Several other members belong to more than one choir, such is their enthusiasm for choral singing.

Many of our members have joined with other choirs for concerts such as Christmas in the Park and the

How often does the choir meet and where? Is it open to new members?

We meet on Wednesday nights, 7.30 – 9.00pm at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Vincent Street. We are always happy to welcome new members and as we are a community choir there is no need to audition!

What genre of music does The Howick Singers generally perform and what genre most appeals to audiences?

Our repertoire is very eclectic and covers a wide range of musical styles. We have done concerts focusing on classical music, songs from shows, and over the years programme have been as diverse a Mozart, Mendelsohn, Beatles, Bach, sacred, lieder, opera, folk songs, standards, ballads and songs by contemporary artists.

Where, in the main, do you perform – is it mostly your own public concerts or do you fulfil private engagements, too?

We offer two public concerts, one in the middle of the year and, traditionally a Christmas concert in December at St Andrew’s. We also perform at retirement villages and service clubs.

Just how strenuous is singing on the voices of the choristers in general? Do voices need to be

rested from time to time to stay in top form?

As with everything, practice makes perfect! But it is important to provide a repertoire that is not too challenging for the vocal range of the group. It is important to warm up the voice before singing for any length of time and developing a good vocal technique makes for a successful performance.

Lynne, you have done two nine year stints as conductor with the choir, how did this come about and are you active as a conductor or singer elsewhere?

I conducted the Howick Singers until 1988 and then reluctantly left to concentrate on other pursuits including academic study and being involved in musical productions. I sang with the Three Mezzos for 18 years until 2017 and I have had the pleasure of conducting the Pakuranga Choral Society on several occasions. I was persuaded by Cynthia Crick, one of the founding members of the choir, (who, almost singled handed, has kept the choir going since its inception), to return to conduct the choir’s 30th anniversary concert and I am still here!

When can audiences expect from your final concert for 2019?

Our end of year concert, on at St Andrew’s is a traditional Christmas concert with many old favourites which our audiences have come to expect as well as some exciting

new material. And, of course, there will be community carols for the audience to be involved in.

Who attends the choir’s concerts?

Is there such a thing as a typical choir fan?

Being a local choir, singing locally, we do have a very loyal following.

Friends and family of past and present choir members are regulars. I am aware of several who check out concert dates to ensure they will be around! And, I am always delighted to see new faces in the audience who retrospectively wonder why they never came before!

If you could be Minister for Culture and Heritage what would be the first thing you would do and why?

Make choral singing compulsory!

Nothing brings a community together more than singing; singing is a fundamental part of being human. It is singing that sustains people in good times and in bad.

I believe if the world sang, there would be no time for war!

If you could ask any musician/ composer/singer to dinner (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

I would love to invite Kathleen Ferrier, a wonderful contralto who died far too young and whose vocal legacy (along with my mother, also a contralto) encouraged me to follow my love of singing from a very early age. www.eastlife.co.nz

Break bad habits: Bad habits can be the main cause of reckless spending. A second coffee from the cafe near work, that weekly takeaway meal, of an impromptu manicure might seem like small expenses, but over the course of the year they can really add up.

Bali calls me!

Well known local photographer, CARMEN BIRD, has visited Bali on more than one occasion of late. After her first ‘working’ holiday she returned on a family holiday with husband and children and came away full of praise for the tropical tourist spot.

Exploring a new destination for the first time is always exciting so watching my children discover Bali with all its chaos, colour, amazing food, energy and charm, was a delight.

With so much to do, and each village having its own unique vibe, many visitors stay at two or three locations during a holiday.

We started our journey in busy Seminyak. The streets tourist villas, resorts, cafes and restaurants bustled with locals going about their business while visitors lapped up the Balinese lifestyle.

Our rented villa was smack bang in the middle of town, down a driveway, off a main road where the gate opened up to a hidden oasis – a four-bedroom mansion (with en suites for everyone) complete with tropical, landscaped gardens, outdoor living and a pool.

The kids couldn’t quite believe it was all ours but quickly embraced their new space by leaping into the pool. The weather was on point with blue skies and temperatures of about 30 degrees Celsius most

days; the low was 25. In our two and a half weeks we barely saw the rain.

With the weather near perfect, beach clubs were a must – day or night, long lunch or cocktail in hand to watch the sun go down! Bali sunsets were magical.

Most clubs had pools and we spent several leisurely afternoons and evenings with friends, alternating between swimming, sampling the cocktail menu, enjoying the DJs and live bands and sampling delicious food. Kuta De Ta and The W Resort were two of favourite Seminyak hotspots.

Of course, the food in Bali was worthy of an article of its own – fresh, healthy, bursting with flavour and, oh so, cheap. Smoothie bowls, fresh raw juices, kombucha, avocado everything and fruit bowls were daily temptations.

For the kids, freshly made pizzas and burgers came with a dash of Balinese flair.

Top pick for brunch in Seminyak was The Shelter set in a jungle of plants with a full of freshness menu – meal presentation was a work of art.

However, they were also mindful that $1 to the locals was a lot of money, the average wage being around $10 a day so, they were careful to be fair. Needless to say, we enjoyed an occasional break in the fixed price shops.

Being a very spiritual place, Bali is known for its temples and shrines on every corner and a daily routine for most Balinese people is to make offerings to the gods. Little flax baskets, filled with flowers, cigarettes and candy, placed on the footpaths, as well as little mini temples on poles were a familiar sight around the streets. Burning incense filled the air with the warm smoky waft of Asia. As one of our local drivers explained, culture is very important to the Balinese, just one reason why Western tourists love to visit.

With swimming top of the list for the kids, the family decided on a day at Kuta’s water park and hired scooters to get there. I wasn’t so keen on this ‘fun’ idea but was out-voted.

Naturally, the local markets beckoned so our first visit was to Kuta and the infamous Poppies Lane. The market vendors certainly

why it took more than a few deep breaths before we finally made it to Waterbom where the kids hit the slides and I de-stressed with a blissful massage amongst beautiful gardens.

After a few days in Seminyak we headed to Canggu, just 30-minutes or so up the road where we encountered a completely different vibe. This area was more laidback and was a favourite stop for surfers, families, foodies, yogis and back packers.

The roads were more broken and narrow and the streets surrounded by rice paddies. The two infamous shortcut routes which connect to Canggu, were meant to be a one way but, yet again, this rule was seldom adhered to.

With the roads winding through rice fields and sitting a metre or so off the ground, we were told tourists and locals, in cars and on scooters, regularly tip over the edge into the paddy fields – luck was with us.

surfers and our kids enjoyed a couple of sessions on boards catching the perfect waves.

Once again, there were many gorgeous eating and drinking places tucked away in all sorts of corners and side streets.

Vegetarian options, tantalising tropical fruits and raw foods galore were a great way to balance out those sunset cocktails.

The Practice in Canggu was another beautiful space with a high, tepee-like bamboo roof and water features creating a beautiful ambiance.

Here, our favourite café was Shady Shack set in a lush garden with smoothie bowls and coffees to write home about.

For tourists, there is nothing like a Balinese massage. Go for the luxury of the beautiful Spring Spa (owned by a Kiwi woman) or pop into one of the many cheap and cheerful roadside spots which will set you back about $8 for a full hour.

When it comes to homewares, Bali has a reputation and a style all of its own – Boho chic with feathers, beads, loads of black and white with lots of cane thrown in the mix. Kim Soo in Seminyak and Bungalow Living in Canguu are worth a visit.

Our final destination was Nusa Dua, oft described as the Denarau (Fiji mainland resorts) of Bali.

Hotels and resorts lined the beach with a boardwalk along the front – great fun when hiring bikes and cycling but when cycling in the heat be sure to rehydrate along the way.

Yoga is also big in Bali and thousands flock to the retreats every year. Bella and I tried a few different yoga spots; a Seminyak favourite was down a side road, set in a tropical garden. Classes were in

Of course, there were so many more tempting venues but we settled for day trips to Ubud. Set in the mountains surrounded by terraced rice paddies, rain forest, waterfalls and a sacred monkey forest, it was idyllic – if you don’t mind the monkey business! Those cheeky little critters were apt to pilfer handbags and sunglasses if we didn’t watch them.

Another day was spent exploring Uluwatu, at the southern end of Bali with resorts and beaches surrounded by limestone cliffs, iconic temples, views out across the ocean and, possibly, the best sunset viewing we experienced.

As readers will realise, it’s difficult to condense Bali into a few words; there was so much to see and do. Its chaotic streets might not be everyone’s choice – especially those who long for quieter surrounds – but who could deny its unique qualities? Bali has certainly captured a little piece of my heart and I am already dreaming of another visit. eastlife | october 2019 |

EASTERN INFLUENCES AT WORK IN

Akarana Eatery Acclaimed chef, Nic Watt is a very busy man. While the excellence of his top flight, Auckland city restaurant Masu is rarely disputed, it seems Nic’s a beggar for punishment. Not only is he on the brink of opening a new Peruvian eatery, Inca, in Newmarket, he has just brought magical Akakana Eatery to the waterfront. HELEN PERRY enjoyed an early taste at this prime venue quizzing the former local about his new venture.

It seems Nic Watt can’t get enough of the sea. He took his first hospitality steps as a waiter at Half Moon Bay just metres from his family home. He grew up sailing and fishing the Hauraki Gulf and remains an ardent boatie. Now, he has embraced the opportunity to head the new Akarana Eatery, which truly enjoys ‘the sea for breakfast’.

Located on the site of Akarana Yacht Club’s new home, within the newly built, architecturally impressive, Hyundai Marine Sports Centre, it sits cheek to cheek with the ocean – a wall of glass, affords arguably the most magnificent restaurant sea views in Auckland.

For those who want fine food, a sunny, north-facing, indoor/ outdoor environment – taking advantage of the views – and a generous deck (plus grassed area still being developed) then this will surely become a dining Mecca.

Furthermore, the crisp white and blue décor, whilst refreshingly simple, is not short on character – original floorboards and joists from the former yacht club building, have been rejuvenated and cleverly used to accentuate seating and the bar – a warm contrast to lighter, airier elements hinting at the nautical.

With the eatery designed as a relaxed destination, perfect for sun-drenched Auckland days, it is a destination to be enjoyed with family, friends and guests; international visitors are sure to be impressed, too.

With that in mind he has managed to create a fusion menu which brings a Japanese mood to bear on European cuisine – it seems, too, that there is a twist to every dish.

For example the mussel fritters are out of this world. No ordinary serving these but, rather, they are reminiscent of kikiage (Japanese tempura fitters) but not so loosely bound. Light with a slight crunch they are a must try!

Nic’s own pick is the Kaipara Harbour yellow belly flounder meunier (lightly browned butter with lemon juice) served with cherry tomato and pimento de la vera (smoked paprika finely ground).

“Given our proximity to the sea it was a given that the menu would be predominantly seafood and the decision seems to be the right one,” Nic says. “After opening for just a couple of nights we found about 95 percent of diners asked for seafood dishes even though we have options for meat lovers such as the individual lamb shank pie.

Furthermore, Nic has endeavoured to bring his food philosophy to the table.

“When designing the menu we first considered all the seafood variants – raw, cured and cooked – then engineered requirements to accommodate meat protein subsequently all entrees are a complete meals with mains comprising a key protein with the option to order sides.”

apple, walnut, mint and tomato is mouth-wateringly good.

“Kiwi palates are really quite intrepid. In fact, as ardent travellers New Zealanders are intrepid by nature and this is reflected in their ability and willingness to try new flavours. This then allows our chefs to explore more ways to be creative.”

With head chef Kei Sazuki taking charge of the Akarana kitchen on a daily basis, Nic is free to oversee his other venues but what about the pressures of working three sites not to mention moving on from the difficult time when his True Food and Yoga venture wasn’t the success expected.

But it seems nothing can repress the culinary spirit of this former Macleans College student.

“It’s not so difficult working the different sites although right now the hours are long – I’ve just done 18 days on the trot and until Inca opens in a week or two, I guess things won’t change a lot.

“But I ran five restaurants when working in London a few years back and now, being free of actual head chef duties, gives rein to my creativity. I can go from kitchen to kitchen where my role is to constantly inspire each team and help chefs to develop their own creativity. I love having the balance between running the business side of the restaurants and cooking.”

the menu will be influenced by Nic’s love of Japanese cuisine. He tells me that about 1000 Japanese immigrants arrived in Peru during the 1860s and over the ensuing decade ‘nikkei’ (meaning living abroad) cuisine was developed.

“Peru is such a cultural melting pot so it is exciting to bring the meld of South American and Japanese cookery developed there, to our kitchen here,” he says.

Finally, I ask Nic if, after living overseas for 19 years and having cooked for celebrities such as Madonna, Russell Crowe, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, (and even Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11 in New Zealand) has he any aspirations to head back to Europe or even Japan?

“Definitely not,” he says emphatically. “I came back to New Zealand to live the Kiwi lifestyle and I’m doing exactly that. My daughter Kiana is now at St Kentigern College and my son will go there too. I’m living in St Heliers but my boat is stilled moored at Half Moon Bay; I’m an eastern boy through and through and staying that way.”

Of course, with Inca set to open on the rooftop of the new Westfield Newmarket complex you might say Nic is on a high.

Sixteen years ago Caryn Mawkes proudly opened the doors to Rockabye Early Learning Centre in Highland Park. Caryn’s desire was to create a family-friendly atmosphere and today it is more commonly known as ‘The Rockabye Family’.

A key factor in the Centre running so successfully is due to the skills and commitment of manager, Louise Sladen whom Caryn has known since qualifying as an early childhood teacher more than 25 years ago.

“Louise and I met at our first childcare job and hit it off from the start. Later we travelled together overseas for a number of years and although Louise remained the UK when I returned home, our friendship was destined to last.

“Louise returned to New Zealand to assist me as manager when I opened the centre and we have worked in sync ever since. We both have similar values and believe communication is the cornerstone to any relationship.

“Aside from our professional working relationship, which is based on honesty and mutual respect for each other’s opinions and abilities, our two families are also close – we both have 11 year old daughters (Louise also has a 13 year old son).”

Today Caryn and Louise can be extremely proud of the connections and relationships they’ve built within the community. Rockabye has earned the respect from

parents who have seen their children grow and develop under Rockabye’s caring and trusting wing.

“I can’t believe we have been here for 16 years,” Caryn says. “We are now seeing the siblings of children we have previously taught coming through our doors, as well as a new generation of families who are embracing our key values of trust, quality and integrity.”

Steampunk’s Waughs of the world When art, fashion, science fiction and history collide, the result is a genre that would make Iggy Pop appear orthodox in comparison. Recently, JON RAWLINSON spoke to a steampunk ‘trouper’ about his family’s passion for this imaginative form of expression.

Grant Waugh is quite the character.

A high school teacher by day, this former Howick local is inclined to adopt a very different guise during his free time.

Steampunk could be considered a subgenre of cosplay but there is (at least one) important difference –enthusiasts tend to create their own characters.

“Some people I know have been a bit surprised at first and many don’t even know what steampunk is but, to those who know I’m a drama teacher, it’s not really such a surprise to learn that I like dressing up. Well, what else would they expect I would do on weekends?” he laughs.

“I’m still fleshing out my own persona but I think his name is Doctor Foster – we found an old doctor’s bag and he has developed from there,” says Grant. “Most people think of England but that was only a part of the Victorian era world. Some dress up as steampunk cowboys or pirates, for example; there’s so much room to explore; to exercise creatively.”

Steampunk may be tricky to define but it could be classified as a reinterpretation of the steampowered Victorian era, drawing inspiration from history and science fiction. In a way, it’s a little like one might expect ‘art’ (personified) would perceive science.

“It draws on the idea of modern technology being invented back in Victorian times,” Grant confirms.

Books by writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells tend to be most closely associated with the genre but there are plenty of other examples – other films with a steampunk look include: Wild Wild West, The Golden Compass, Hook, The City of Lost Children and, a more recent example, Mortal Engines and even Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. www.eastlife.co.nz

Doctor Foster is not the only ‘steampunk trouper’ in the Waugh family; Grant’s wife, Nickie (aka Sapphire Sinensis, a travelling tea merchant ) tailors most of the family’s fashions but up-cycling clothing and accessories from op-shops plays an important role in creating the right look.

In addition, the couple’s son, Bailey (aged 11) drew inspiration for his alter ego, Professor Cogsen, from Gareth Ward’s book, Traitor and the Thief, and Ruby (9) is a butterfly collector known as Ruby Firefly.

Raised in Howick, Grant studied drama at Auckland University, which led him into teaching, including a stint at Pakuranga College. His passion for theatre

became a passion shared in 2001 during rehearsals for a Harlequin Theatre production.

“I was the voice of the plant, Audrey, in Little Shop of Horrors while Nickie worked on the sets.

So, as we’ve both had performance backgrounds, steampunk turned out to be a very good fit,” the De La Salle drama teacher says.

However, it wasn’t until more recently that the family embarked on their ‘Verne-esque’ adventure which (fittingly) began with a journey down to the Steampunk the Thames festival.

“Nickie’s aunt was on the organising committee, so we went along and enjoyed it,” Grant explains. “What kept us going back for more was that we found and joined an Auckland-based group – the Auckland Air Krakens – they had a get-together soon afterward.

We didn’t know how we’d fit in but, from the moment we arrived, they welcomed us with open arms.

We had an amazing time and they loved how keen our kids were to be a part of it all too.”

Late last year, the couple established The Copper Krakens (a sub-group of the Auckland Air Krakens) and become part of a burgeoning community which has expanded due to electronic

(as opposed to steam-powered) technology.

“The internet makes it much easier for likeminded people to communicate and share ideas,” adds Grant. “There will have been groups out there interested in steampunk years ago but, without the internet, it would have been much harder for them to come together.”

Release the (Copper) Krakens!

November’s Steampunk the Thames Festival may be the next big event on the calendar for enthusiasts of this inimitable style but, before then, the Copper Krakens will take their turn on the catwalk closer to home during the A Night of Fashion event in Pukekohe.

“None of us are models so our outfits will be worn by everyday folk – well, almost ‘everyday’!”

Grant Waugh (aka Doctor Foster) says. “A lot of design work goes into the outfits so I’m sure people will be impressed and will also learn more about what steampunk is all about.”

It’s school holiday time so, here’s hoping for some drier, warmer weather to encourage us outdoors.

When hibernating over winter it is too easy for kids to spend hours indoors on a dreaded device!

at elbow length is a good rule of thumb. Also use a viewing stand; place on a table to avoid excessive downward neck posture. The bigger the screen, the better – with casting content to a TV preferable.

Don’t get me wrong – I am as joined to the hip as the next person to my smart phone, loving the fact that information is always at my fingertips. Stats show I’m not alone with Kiwis spending an average of six hours per day on the internet, two hours of which is spent on social media.

Time – a recent study published in BMC Ophthalmology revealed more than 65% of 11 year olds spent more than two hours per day on devices. With increased close work being a prime risk factor for developing myopia or short sight, which is concerning.

It goes without saying our younger generations, who have never known life without smart gadgets, will be even more inclined to incorporate all things digital into their world. Furthermore, as they age, time spent on devices will increase in respect to both school and leisure activities.

Things for parents to consider: Reading distance and posture – the optimal focus distance for reading and writing is 30-40cm with the ideal computer viewing distance being 50-70cm. We naturally hold smaller devices, such as mobile phones and tablets a bit closer and lower; 20-30cm from the eyes. This can induce eye strain which can lead to headache, tired eyes, blurred or double vision and even dry eye. Musculoskeletal strain of the neck, shoulders and hands can also occur.

Fussy eaters – most families know them, in fact, many Kiwi parents are cooking more than one variety of dinner per night in order to cater to children who refuse to eat anything green or have some other food aversion. greater the chance of nutritional issues.

According to recent research, many mums and dads choose from the same repertoire of five meals to avoid dinnertime drama with two thirds (64%) cooking more than one evening meal and over half (55%) preparing at least two dinner meals. Just under a tenth cooked up to three dinners for the whole family on a weekly basis.

“We know the environment we are raised in has a significant impact on the foods we become accustomed to. Infants start life on a milk-only diet of some form. As solid foods are gradually introduced children from a wide range of different cultures, learn to like a variety of flavours.”

The study, commissioned by meal kit provider www.hellofresh.co.nz, found that a fifth (19%) of New Zealand parents often, or always, ate different meals to their children.

To avoid dinnertime drama, eight in 10 parents cooked the same meals regularly knowing their kids would eat them without a fuss. For a fifth (22%) of families, this involved a range of five to six meals per week, but as many as a quarter (24%) were restricted to the same three to four meals each week.

Half of parents said getting children to eat spicy food was a struggle; a third said their kids didn’t like anything bitter and 32% of kids refused to eat greens! But, it’s no surprise that far fewer parents reported problems when it came to sweet, salty or saucey choices!

Otago University professor, Rachael Taylor, says many children are fussy about vegetables but eat reasonable amounts of fruit.

“Others can be reluctant to eat meat, so appropriate vegetarian sources of iron are required; the more extensive the fussiness, the

If you take flour, eggs, baking powder and milk and mix/bake at the right temperature, you get cake (okay, so my cake recipe is not the greatest). You put together the ingredients, you follow the rules and you get the result.

Cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and most diseases are exactly like that.

If you take toxins, lack of key nutrients, inflammation, an imbalanced pH, high blood sugar and more than 30 other ingredients, which have been identified by science, and mix them together then let them incubate, you’re in the market for cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, etc.

“It was such an honour to have been nominated and then elected to represent the organisation as president, but I am now looking forward to a bit of a break!” she says.

CITRUS CURED PRAWNS Serves two as sharing plate

INGREDIENTS Prawn marinade • 6 peeled and shelled raw prawns – as large as possible • 1 whole lemon juiced and zested • 1/2 ruby grapefruit juiced and zested • 1 garlic clove crushed to a paste • 4 Tbsp good quality olive oil • 1 pinch mild chilli flakes • Pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper For cos hearts and wrapping • 1 whole cos lettuce (to be divided into 6 hearts) • 2 toasted nori seaweed sheets cut into 8 rectangles or a small packet of pre-cut rectangles • 12 long fresh sprigs of coriander For hot pepper roasted peanut sesame dressing • 1 tsp hot pepper paste (Gochu Jang – available from most Asian and deli grocers or 1/2 tsp of Sriracha sauce) • 3 Tbsp wasabi peas chopped • 3 Tbsp roasted peanuts, roughly chopped • 6 Tbsp deep roasted sesame dressing (available in most supermarkets) • 2 Tbsp lemon juice

METHOD Gently score the underside of each prawn to cut the tendon and prevent prawns from curling when cooking. www.eastlife.co.nz

In a medium bowl, combine the lemon juice and zest, grapefruit juice and zest, garlic, olive oil and chilli.

Stir to mix ingredients. Add the prawns and gently cover with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before cooking.

To divide the whole cos lettuce into six hearts, wash and keep the base intact, cut in half then split the halves into thirds, keeping the base intact to hold the heart together.

Finely chop the coriander. Keep covered in the fridge until ready.

Have the Nori on hand. In a small bowl, mix the hot pepper paste, wasabi peas, roasted peanuts, sesame dressing and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside ready to serve.

To serve: Heat a medium sized pan to near smoking point, add all the prawns directly into the pan (there is enough oil to coat and allow the prawns to be lubricated while cooking). Cook at a high heat for 3 minutes, flipping the prawns over twice to ensure even cooking on both sides.

To eat: place a cos leaf into your palm, add a nori sheet, a prawn, a spoon of dressing, finish with the coriander and roll like a juicy prawn log. Enjoy! eastlife | october 2019 |

Ingredients • Two tea bags Ti Ora Fruit Infusion – Summer Fruits with NZ Manuka Leaf • 80ml hot water • 10ml passionfruit puree/ syrup • 40ml Seedlip Spice 94 tonic • 50ml tonic water • Orange slice Method: Brew two bags with hot water for 5 mins. Remove the tea bags and allow to cool down, then chill. Once chilled, combine with passionfruit puree, and Seedlip. Pour over ice. Top up with tonic water. Garnish with orange slice.

It’s a fun and easy way for children to grow their own healthy pizza toppings and is sure to inspire a fresh look at tasty veggies.

Bite-sized tasty cherry tomatoes, sliced in half, are perfect pizza toppings, as is fragrant basil, colourful capsicum, zucchini (courgette) and tender baby leaf spinach or silverbeet.

Choose a sunny spot in the backyard and make a round pizzashaped garden (it could also be square or rectangular – whatever you have room for). Use old bricks or pavers as edging for the garden.

2. Plants like growing in nice soft soil so remove any grass or weeds and dig around in the soil to loosen it up.

Gherkins – GROWING COOLER CUCS

Let’s face it, we all want to hang with the cool kids but that’s not always possible.

While some may be cool as cucumbers, others fit in by getting pickled.

While gherkins may not be as glamorous as others in the cucumber family, these mini delights are easy to grow, and highly popular with those who think sweet is always beat by sour!

It is thought gherkins were first developed by workers building the Great Wall of China although another theory is that they were first made in Mesopotamia’s Tigris Valley using cucumbers brought from India.

Over the centuries they have entered the cuisine of many European countries with some favouring sour and others, sweet.

The methods of pickling may be essentially similar but, as with all chefs, over the years, culinary wizards have given recipes their own twist. And, of course there are different types of cucumbers suitable for pickling.

Interestingly, in Germany there is

a Christmas tradition of hanging a gherkin ‘ornament’ last; the first child to find the pickle receives an extra gift.

In Russia and Ukraine pickles are used in rassolnik, a traditional soup which includes pearl barley, pork or beef kidneys with various herbs.

In southern USA dill pickles with a batter coating are deep fried while in Japan ‘stick pickles’ (pickles on a stick) are festive fare.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW TO PLANT: Generally speaking, gherkins are grown in much the same way as their larger cousins. Unlike cucumbers they can be left to grow as groundcover – rather than trained over a frame – and will produce abundantly.

Depending on the region, gherkins can be planted from mid-spring right up until mid-summer. If seeds are sown early in the season, it’s

advisable to give them a head start indoors where they will be protected from frosts.

Choose a spot in the garden where plants will receive full sun. Because they are gross feeders, they require rich soil, with temperatures ranging from 15-35 degrees Celsius, and plenty of room for roots to develop.

Sow seeds at a depth about three times their diameter and spaced roughly 50cm apart. To ensure an adequate harvest for pickling, at least five plants should be grown at any one time.

Care: Regular watering is very important to ensure a healthy crop of perky gherkins, particularly during the heat of summer.

However, take care not to overwater. Water the roots, not the foliage, to avoid the development of mildew and disease.

Harvest: As a rule of thumb,

gherkins should be picked before they grow larger than 10cm in length. Once the harvest has been completed, the plants can be removed for compost to make way for a fresh crop next season.

Uses: From salsas and relishes to pizzas and even simply sliced and served with cheese on crackers or on a ploughman’s platter, gherkins are versatile and tasty.

While, nutritionally speaking, they do not have a plethora of nutritional benefits, when pickled, they are a delicious, absorbing the flavours of spices, herbs and vinegar with ease. Pickled gherkins will keep well for years.

Compared to commercially available products, gherkins which have been home-grown and pickled are in a completely different league when it comes to flavour. So, maybe it’s time to tell the cool kids of this world to go hang and get workin’ on growin’ gherkin! www.eastlife.co.nz

Home show Win

a life-changer Four years ago, Bucklands Beach couple, Jono and Karen Frankle, together with Karen’s parents, Tom and Robyn Shreuder, took part in TVNZ’s Our First Home series and won the sought-after $100,000 prize.

HELEN PERRY caught up with the Frankles to see what changes the experience had made in the young couple’s lives.

Life has definitely taken a number of turns in the four years since Jono and Karen Frankle took part in the Our First Home series.

After competing against two other teams in purchasing a house, renovating it and then putting it up for auction on the show, the couple took their share of the prize money and the $190,400 profit from the house sale, to buy their first ‘real’ home in Howick.

But the years have also seen them change jobs, extend and renovate their new home, take on other property investments and, most importantly, increase their family by two – “we now have two beautiful daughters, Isla and Harley, who keep us pretty busy,” Karen says.

Jono adds: “The series not only gave us fresh insight into other opportunities but motivated us to make changes in our careers so www.eastlife.co.nz

we could take advantage of those opportunities.

“I was a tennis coach but I’ve since sold my coaching business to take on property investment including purchasing and renovating several properties. I’m also presenting at educational seminars with Wealth Mentor (who I trained with) and I’m loving helping others find a way forward on the property ladder.”

Jono’s new direction has meant that Karen, a qualified nurse, can be a stay-at-home mum with their two daughters – “at least until they go to school,” she says. “Being at home has also meant I can look to do more design work which I aim to build on.”

Of course, her first design job was to plan changes to her own home – originally a two-bedroom cottage with small kitchen and a laundry accessed across the back porch.

“Naturally, being ours, it was a job I really enjoyed. We’d learnt such a lot from the show and I was able to incorporate some of the lessons learnt there.”

The work has been carried out by Karen’s father Tom and his twin brother Rob, who are now keen to tackle the outdoors when warmer and drier weather arrives.

So far, the previously L-shaped house has been extended on one side to accommodate a large master bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and en suite while, on the opposite side, the kitchen has been pushed part way into the porch in order to gain a butler’s pantry.

The rest of the porch, the former laundry and the original, tiny bathroom have been combined and re-shaped to create a stunning and spacious family bathroom with all contemporary fixtures.

Purchasing a property is probably one of the most valuable investments in your lifetime. With the current property prices in Auckland, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for many people to save enough to buy the house they want. Buying with friends, family or even a business partner has become more and more common these days.

Before committing to this type of arrangement, the future joint owners should put their mind to how they want their shared ownership to work in the future.

Usually the parties have considered the basics, such as ownership percentage, who should be responsible for payment of rates, insurance and maintenance. But there is much more to consider.

A Property Sharing Agreement is a great way of putting together all the necessary considerations which have been agreed between the parties. It could be as simple or as complicated as desired.

Commonly a Property Sharing

Agreement covers areas such as: • Each party’s contribution, both in cash and by way of loan; • Each party’s ownership shares in the property and how their respected shares shall be recorded on the property title; • Any joint and several obligations under any mortgage; • How each party shall contribute toward the loan repayment (if any), expenses and maintenance of the property; • The procedure to follow if one of the owners want to sell their share of the property; • The process of selling the property to a third party; • How the sale proceeds shall be distributed;

My hint is... ‘always think, before you act!’

Do not forsake your humanity, for ‘sustained electronic kidnap [SEK]’. Computers, so-called Smartphones, television etc., are fine but, my hint here is... keep the balance! Err on the side of, ‘present’ human interaction [PHI].

Suggestion Number Five, I just call... ‘reset’. It is part of the ‘3be’... review/reset/restart. There is so much wonder in the world, that even if your life is terrific right now, there is room to create a path that can lead to journeys you never thought you would make. More in November, Team.

We know Jacs Recent government measures may serve as a vital lifeline rather than an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, expects. Either way, it’s clear the PM is definitely not on bed rest when it comes to addressing the health of our healthcare system (as well as education, trade and more) recent reports from her office suggest.

But, seriously...

Taking ‘mental health seriously’ is crucial in curbing this country’s suicide rate, Ms Ardern believes.

“Our rate of suicide is a long-term national tragedy,” she said recently regarding plans for a Suicide Prevention Office. “We promised to take mental health seriously...

The office provides a focus for the range of initiatives to reduce the number of New Zealanders taking their own life.”

The office will help direct the Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan, which draws on $1.9 billion in funding (including $40 million for suicide prevention) from Budget 2019.

“We know there is more work to do, and not all the answers will be found in Wellington. So we will continue to work with local communities and people with lived experience as we develop further initiatives and services.”

This strategy is one of a series of initiatives designed to ensure access to free mental healthcare.“For too long mental health has been neglected. We’re rolling out free frontline services across the country so that anyone in distress can easily access free support.”

This renewed focus also includes the establishment of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission, a successor to the Mental Health Commission, which was closed down by the previous government.

It is expected to report back to the Minister of Health within a year.
