ON THE COVER
Slow down… think! Having lived in Pakuranga for more than 40 years before moving to Pukekohe, I’ve long been an advocate of some suburban roads having 60km/h speed limits. For example, I travelled daily on Ti Rakau Drive where the marginally higher speed limit seemed to work brilliantly.
EXOTIC DESTINATIONS: When the world beckons but the reality is – not this year, Bird & Knoll’s gorgeous cashmere blend scarves and wraps can elevate your mood and transport you, in spirit, to Miami, Venice, Fiji and more. Dress to impress with these timeless accessories designed to add international appeal and a touch of the exotic to your summer wardrobe. See page 26 for more.

I seldom saw motorists overstepping the mark during daylight hours (when I was travelling) and felt the higher limit helped keep traffic moving (albeit still slowly) on this heavily used road. Subsequently, when I read that Auckland Transport (AT) had given the green light to its proposed speed limits bylaw, I was dismayed. Firstly, it seems the new speed limits will see a big group of 100km/h rural roads reduced to an expected 80km/h which doesn’t seem too bad but, as I understand it, even lower speeds have not been entirely ruled out. Automobile Association (AA) spokesperson Barney Irvine has indicated that some 100km/h rural roads may be brought down to 60km/h or even 40km/h – I wonder if our Beachlands/ Maraetai route will be affected?

On the surface, it might seem difficult to fault the board’s reasoning when trotting out road death figures and safety issues. But I’m inclined to think such statistics can be skewed to justify decisions. It is easy to quote road deaths across the city as a whole but I haven’t yet heard those numbers broken down to show, the actual number of deaths on those roads which will be impacted by the new speed limits. What’s more, I’m wondering what affect the speed reductions will have on traffic congestion, courier deliveries and one’s general ability to get from A to B in many places. I’m also sceptical about the rate of compliance – will the lower speeds become just another means of revenue-collecting? I’ve been given to believe that about 800kms of roads (including in some small town centres) will be reduced to 30km/h and some roads which are now 60km/h could be taken back to 50km/h – I
hope the latter doesn’t mean Ti Rakau Drive or Pakuranga Road (the highway). With the changes set down for mid 2020, I’m hoping AT will take time to reconsider some of its decisions. It seems consultation on its original proposal revealed that of the 6000 respondents who expressed a general view, 57% were opposed, while 43% were supportive. An AA survey of its members in rural Auckland also found that 46% were opposed to the speed limit changes AT had proposed in their area, while 32% were in favour (21% were in two minds). Perhaps these two surveys indicate that a lot of people don’t approve of the changes or don’t want to see them (ironically) rushed. I for one, think some of the speed limits touted are questionable in a city already travelling at snail’s pace.

Q&A Kate Hargraves – WITH
UPLIFT PROJECT
Women in disadvantaged communities are often short on life’s essentials including underwear, especially bras. In some places, parts of the Pacific included, these undergarments are often unobtainable or unaffordable but all around the world – in Auckland, too – women are lending their support – literally! The Uplift Project collects new and second hand bras and sends them to communities in need. EastLife talked to Kate Hargraves who has been a driving force behind the Auckland group for several years. Kate, we last spoke to you over a year ago in regards to you being a St John community volunteer, but EastLife understands that the Uplift Project is, shall we say, close to your heart. When did you become involved in this charity and why? I loved everything about this project as soon as I became aware of it and I couldn’t wait to be involved. For me it’s perfect; women helping women, donated goods going to where there is a need and clothing, which may have ended up in landfills, having another life. Where is the Auckland collection point based? It all happens from my home in St Heliers; donations arrive almost daily by post, courier and personal delivery – sometimes even the husbands deliver the bras! Where do most of the bras collected in Auckland go to? Mostly to the Pacific: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.
Are any distributed in New Zealand? Yes. We like to care for girls and women in need anywhere so, any time we are asked for bras we are happy to supply them. Recently this has been through churches and District Health Boards and I currently have two pilot schemes running in Auckland secondary schools. There is often a real need for bras for girls especially as girls without bras are reluctant to be involved in sports. How many people work behind the local scenes receiving, collating and sending bras overseas and are they all volunteers? We have a couple of drop off points around the wider Auckland area. We are all volunteers and work together as a team; we all have www.eastlife.co.nz
different roles. Most packing and distribution is done from my home. A good example of our team work would be my colleague, Vicki, who comes from the North Shore and helps with transportation and social media. Are recipients embarrassed to be receiving second hand bras or are they just grateful to have ‘the support’? We are careful to send only quality bras when they are ‘pre-loved’ and a lot of the bras donated clearly have seen little wear, the same with donated underwear. The women are so happy to see the bras – their smiles tell us what these mean to them. For some of these women an ‘Uplift’ bra might be the only one they will ever own. How many bras do you receive on average in any one month? It is hard to know the numbers as we receive a steady stream of donations. It varies too; we can have women in groups or work places run collections for us. Recently I received a one-off donation of more than 1000 bras which had been collected by a group. Packets of bras arrive daily; they could contain anything from one to 20 bras so at month end we can have up to 1500 or more. How often do you send a shipment to the Islands? As often as we can but this is heavily dependent on what opportunities we can find to get bras there. We are always looking for help to send our products. Recently the NZ Navy sent a one metre consignment for us to Samoa which was a huge help. Air New Zealand also assists us with additional check in bags for travellers so they can take 23 kg of bras to our contacts for distribution or directly to the villages. This kind of help is so appreciated.
What happens at the other end? Are there organised groups who receive and distribute the bras or does someone from New Zealand go over to help with this task? We have excellent partners on the ground to receive goods; most are registered charities. We also travel quite frequently to destinations so we meet our partners and work closely with them in regards to distribution. Some bras will be taken to schools, some to hospitals, others to outreach programmes and some are given to women at the time of screening for breast cancer. What kind of bras do you require and is there any size/cup preference? We accept all bras but larger sizes are preferred – you could say the bigger the better. I have had women over the moon to receive a new bra when it is a size 22J! Sports bras are very popular. Where we can, we pack and send maternity bras directly to birthing units and hospitals. Do you send only bras or do you send other items too? I love to send other items. I work closely with other charities and I value these relationships. The ‘Days for Girls’ organisation works closely with us making it possible to send sanitary pads via medical teams. The Lions organisation also supplies us with recycled reading and sun glasses. Sometimes I am given other items too which is a delight. An example of this would be babies and children’s clothing, soap and, more recently, I was given 400 pairs of jandals. Fabulous! What does it cost to send a shipment of bras and where does the money for this come from?
We rely heavily on individuals and businesses to help us with freight by sharing their resources. We are always looking for new opportunities to send our goods. As a group we don’t have any money, so it is only what we donate ourselves. If local women wish to donate bras where do they send/take them and what about cash donations? Items can be posted, couriered or delivered to me at 5 Modena Crescent, St Heliers, Auckland 1071. Parcels can be left in the basket here or dropped in the letterbox or by the front door. We receive few donations – occasionally, we find a $5 note in with the bras and this always brings a cheer from the team. If there was a group or business that wanted to make a donation to us that would be amazing ; it would enable us to do more and send more items to women in need. If you could be Minister of Foreign Affairs for a Day what would you do first and why? Easy – I would a find a way to list all of the organisations working across the Pacific and then put them in touch with each other! The power of knowing what they are each doing and how they could work together would be incredible. Last time we spoke you gave us the names of three people (all now passed) who you would invite to dinner if you could, are there any other three (living) people you would ask to join the party? For sure! Prince Harry would be a charming addition to any dinner party so he’s a must. I would love to meet Oprah Winfrey as I think she is beyond incredible and I would invite David Attenborough, so I could shake his hand and thank him on behalf of the world for his incredible work. eastlife | november 2019 |

Rachel Briscoe Photo Wayne Martin
All dolled up – CLEVER MUM BRUSHES UP ON BUSINESS With each carefully designed Pearl Doll there comes a tale of longevity, hidden meaning and family tradition, for which creator Rachel Briscoe holds the secret. HELEN PERRY talked to this thoughtful mum and business entrepreneur about the manufacturing journey which began on behalf of her daughter, Jemima.
14 | eastlife | november 2019
“I called them Pearl Dolls because my middle name is Margaret which means ‘pearl’; it is also my mother and my grandmother’s name so the world ‘pearl’ brings a sense of longevity and family to the brand which I hope suggests these dolls can be a generational.
Most little girls love dolls – they revel in dressing and undressing them, ‘feeding’ them, putting them to bed and, most of all brushing their hair. Unfortunately, not all little dolls stand up to the task.
withstand the rigorous play of a pre-schooler and not collapse within a few months. Despite looking long and hard I just couldn’t find what I wanted in New Zealand.
So, when four-year-old Jemima Briscoe’s nurturing instincts started to emerge and dolls became a passion, her mum, Rachel was soon set on a path to find a doll made from quality materials and had long, lush hair which didn’t frizz with the first touch of a brush.
“Mattel [USA firm] came closest but didn’t ship to here and although I did find one in Australia I continued the search in New Zealand.
“Jemima had some birthday money she wanted to spend on a doll she had seen locally,” the Howick mother explains. “I wasn’t happy with the quality and decided I would add to her purse so she could buy a doll, which would
Then I starting thinking, ‘I like dolls, I can design one of these and have it made.’ I especially wanted to create a pretty but robust doll, suitable for daily play but which would go the distance, endure into adulthood and then be passed down. For example, I still have dolls from my childhood as does my mother and we still cherish them.”
While there was plenty of research to be done, coming up with a name for her doll range was easy. “I called them Pearl Dolls because my middle name is Margaret which means ‘pearl’; it is also my mother and my grandmother’s name so the word ‘pearl’ brings a sense of longevity and family to the brand which I hope suggests these dolls can be a generational. “Dolls are a great way for children to role play, use their imagination and learn nurturing skills so, I wanted my dolls to be as realistic as possible. I also believe that by playing with dolls of a different skin colour, children can learn to relate to real people of different skin colours which is why one is brown-skinned.”
www.eastlife.co.nz
Setting out confidently on her design and make journey Rachel decided on three dolls, about 18 inches tall with vinyl legs, arms and head but a soft cuddly torso. The eyes open and shut but the major priority was to have wigged not rooted hair,
“I had intended to include a blonde but at the time of sample making, the blonde fibre was in short supply. Fortunately, the redhead alternative has been a big hit although in time I will introduce a blonde, after all they are supposed to have more fun!”
she says. “The wig is handmade, the finger nails and toenails are hand painted and the facial moulds is hand cast. Each doll comes dressed in our signature outfit, a white spotted navy blue skirt and white tee with pearl detail on the neckline plus navy patent shoes.
“When the hair is rooted each hole tends to show especially when the hair is styled. Wigged hair avoids this and by choosing a top quality fibre, frizzing is also avoided,” Rachel explains.
The first prototypes didn’t go to plan either – “the skin colours were just not right, terrible in fact, so I started over.” Although some 89% of the world’s dolls are manufactured in China, as are Rachel’s, she didn’t want her dolls made on a standard production line.
“In addition, two more outfits can be purchased – a peach-coloured ribbon and lace party frock which comes with gold shoes and the picnic outfit of a gingham blouse with denim shorts and white sandals. The ability to swap around the clothes is a definite draw card, and of course, clever sewers can add to a doll’s wardrobe.”
“Finding the right manufacturer was a steep learning curve but I’m delighted with the outcome. Most of the doll is handcrafted,”
Expecting arrival of her first shipment in late November, Rachel says she has received nothing but positive feedback from mums and
After ‘a tonne of research’ as well as talking to friends and to their children, Rachel came up with three initial dolls, one with brunette hair and blue eyes, one with black hair and brown eyes and the third a green-eyed redhead.

pre-sales have gone extremely well – the dolls being priced at $149 each. “I’m not seeking stockists just yet. Initially I will sell online and believe purchasers will see the value. I’m looking to build the brand then I’ll decide where to next. In the meantime, all talk at the moment is about little girls and their dolls!”

HOLIDAY SICKNESS
treated with top care No one wants to fall ill on holiday – it’s the one thought that’s pushed aside when packing suitcases especially when heading for sun, sea and surf! Yet, when Eastlife owners BRIAN and REAY NEBEN escaped to Rarotonga recently, longing for (and expecting) a quiet week relaxing on the sand, the unthinkable occurred! Reay relates the experience.
Luckily, Brian responded rapidly to all the drugs. An oxygen tank was bought up from New Zealand and, with Air NZ’s approval, he was given the okay to come home. During all this we were treated with nothing but kindness and concern even to the point of Brian being delivered to Raro airport by ambulance and put in a wheelchair.
We set out full of high hopes – warm weather and the sea beckoned and we hoped to be settled in Rarotonga just ahead of the All Black game against South Africa. But it wasn’t to be. Even before arriving at Auckland International Airport, our first hitch – a text message to say the flight was delayed by 90 minutes. Nevertheless, when we did land, a welcome taxi was waiting to take us to a secluded chalet virtually on the shoreline where we could quietly celebrate a happy end to my long year of illness and treatment. The idea was to enjoy a spot where we would see no one, enjoy a daily walk then lie on sun loungers and read lots of books. But, as usual, Murphy’s Law came into play – on the first day it rained but the showers failed to dampen our appreciation of this lovely island. Rarotonga had grown a lot since we were there last. It certainly had more motorbikes than we’d seen in the past but we didn’t see a lot of crash helmets being worn. Mind you, no one went faster than 40kmph!” A couple more days of rest and sunshine with nothing more strenuous to do than enjoy a swim, a cocktail or pop out for a meal; the holiday was looking good. All was going to plan until the fourth day when Brian complained of feeling unwell and having no energy.
16 | eastlife | november 2019
Once our bags were deposited at check-in, we headed into the Air NZ lounge for a welcome breather. When it was time to board, Brian was assisted on to the plane.
Brian Neben in ital Rarotongan hosp
I knew he wasn’t right when he didn’t want a wine or even an amble to the water’s edge – I can smile now but at the time his breathing was concerning. The next day and it was off to the hospital where he was immediately admitted. After a number of tests, it appeared a virus had attacked his chest – not good but the doctors and staff were wonderful! Despite Brian being in hospital, I did ask if we could take an early flight home. “Absolutely not,” said the doctor! Being on holiday was suddenly a problem as our booking was coming to an end and I had nowhere to stay!
“The oxygen was put on and then it was four hours of movies. When we arrived in Auckland, a wheelchair was bought to the plane but, unlike Raro, ground staff here told me there was a staff shortage and they couldn’t take us through unless we waited about half an hour! While Brian is now fully recovered, I was disappointed not to have had more ‘me time’ on the holiday we had so looked forward to. However, I was extremely thankful the illness occurred in Rarotonga and not somewhere remote. “We had quick access to the hospital and although it was old, it was well equipped and we found the doctors and nurses to be wonderfully caring – our wellbeing was their priority so, a warm thank-you to them all. And, to Rarotonga – we will be back… minus wheelchair we hope!

De-plane-ing delirium Flight plans are usually a joyful project but once up in the air, things can go awry. Sometimes passengers end up with noses perilously close to a stranger’s armpit or hip-to-hip with the person from across the aisle ROBYN YOUSEF knows well the minor inconveniences of air time and also the exit madness which seems to grip everyone at the end of a flight. While some people worry about the “recline or not to recline” dilemma or whether it’s better to have a window or an aisle seat, I find it much more perplexing mastering the art of a graceful exit when the plane has landed. As that cute and cuddly comedian, Michael McIntyre once said it’s often like a crazy and chaotic race – the seat belt sign goes off and just as if a whistle has been blown, there’s a mad scramble to get off the plane. I recently read that one seasoned traveller said he found the time between landing and actually being able to walk off the aircraft as one of the most frustrating aspects of flying. I think he can’t have been very seasoned! While the exit strategy can be very uncomfortable and frustrating, surely we can all think of a helluva lot more things that annoy on a long flight – for example, that child behind you who exercises his goal-kicking skills on the small of your back every two minutes or the traveller near the window who wants the bathroom just as you have dozed off to sleep. Nevertheless, on destination arrival most of us are excited, although sometimes exhausted with jetlag. The thought of reaching our accommodation or sinking into the comfort of our own bed teases irritatingly. Yes, the end seems tantalisingly close, but often there is at least a 20-minute wait before stepping out into the terminal; that’s because passengers must first cope with

POLITE PROTOCOL FOR DISEMBARKING • Don’t try to push ahead of other passengers when the plane lands “de-plane-ing delirium”, that mad desire to disembark by rampaging down the aisle as soon as possible. Of course, it’s highly unlikely you’ll reach the baggage carousel before your luggage so, why not relax in your seat until the mob disperses then saunter casually to pick up your bags? Some people just seem to have a natural instinct to bolt. It’s a bit like those speedsters who race past on city roads but you catch up with them at the next red light. I do understand the need to board as quickly as possible (and that’s regulated by airline staff). Securing overhead space for carry-on baggage can be difficult but on finally reaching one’s destination, why the stampede? Those quick to rise are often left standing for quite some time
before doors are opened and the first movement off the plane is made. Excited we may be but, really, standing prematurely in the aisle just doesn’t make sense. What’s more, it can be desperately uncomfortable scrunched up under those overhead bins. Finding yourself in such close proximity to other passengers can even prove dangerous – I once saw a fragile, elderly man narrowly escape decapitation as a hippie with a huge backpack swung around to push into the departing crush.
• Don’t speak loudly on your cell phone • If you have a very tight connection to make, flight attendants can sometimes help you move closer to the front right before landing. • If another passenger is having difficulty lowering a carry-on bag from the overhead bin, be helpful so everyone can get off the plane safely and quickly.
Toes get stood on, elbows swing menacingly and personal hygiene products are harshly tested in this environment.
advice – as a seasoned traveller – is to sit back and read your book for a few minutes longer.
After a lengthy and tedious journey in the strangely unnatural environment of air travel, it may be hard to resist that mad, free-for-all disembarkation process. But my

HOT TROPICS
Remuera garden ready to shine What awaits behind Kate’s gates? Recently, JON RAWLINSON spoke with a landscape designer whose work appears set to impress during the upcoming Auckland Garden DesignFest. The rustic gates of one Remuera home on this year’s Auckland Garden DesignFest (November 16-17) may belong to the property’s residents but the extensive work required in developing the garden within is, most definitely, down to more than just a little hard work by Kate Ryan from Zones Landscaping. “I was very confident with my clients’ brief because I know the tropical planting palette very well,” she explains. “They wanted the garden to be striking with a wide variety of plants providing texture and colour.” While the sloped section presented challenges, Kate and team have cleverly worked with the lay of the land, using it to accentuate privacy and, effectively, turn one garden into a number of intriguing outdoor rooms. “Just to get started, we needed to clear out a lot of old trees, which were too overgrown. There was a lot of work involved just to get it to a point where we could start planting.
18 | eastlife | november 2019
“From their main living area, my clients used to look out at a big retaining wall but now they see a row of beautiful fronds which just look amazing, especially in the sun. The way we’ve planted ensures the property receives plenty of light but also allows for plenty of privacy too. The owners are really happy and I think we hit the brief nicely.” Kate’s astute placement of plants helps ensure the garden offers a feeling of being in the middle of an isolated, tropical oasis than close to the heart of a busy city bordered by a number of neighbouring residences. “In general, tropical plants are quite easy to maintain and, because they love the Auckland climate, there weren’t too many limits in terms of what we could plant.” Originally from the rural South Island, Kate pursued a career in fashion before digging into landscape gardening. “My parents were big gardeners
so I learned about plants from an early age through them but my work in the clothing industry totally sharpened my eye for design,” she says. “The process for designing gardens is similar [to designing clothing] because they both involve a lot of planning and co-ordination and also require dealing with clients to ensure the best outcome for them.” Achieving the best outcomes may well benefit from grand designs and ‘big picture’ thinking but, as with any project, it pays to take a hands-on approach too. “It is important [to be hands-on] because the final touches are vital. I think you have to feel the love of what you’re doing by getting a bit dirty at least.”
INSPIRATION BY THE BARROW-LOAD Kate has won awards for her work in the past and has had her own home garden (in Westmere) previously featured in the
Auckland Garden DesignFest. I ask what her home garden is like; she laughs and answers: “It’s very nice! The front is all natives and the back is all tropical; I love both those types of plants.” Kate is one of 15 designers whose work was selected by a panel from the Garden Design Society for this year’s edition. Other designers set to showcase their skills include Xanthe White, Trish Bartleet and Andy Hamilton. Kate says the festival provides excellent exposure for designers looking to showcase their skills but adds it can also benefit attendees keen to glean tips to employ at home. “I think there were about 700 people who went through my garden in 2015; [the festival] is hugely popular because it is so inspirational. I’ll be here throughout this year’s event and more than happy to chat with visitors about the garden and my vision for it.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner CARYN MAWKES has some tips to inspire confidence in children. In order to help boost your child’s confidence, you have to be an active participant in their lives so here are a handful of ideas that may help your child to grow in a positive and confident manner: • Connect with your child every day. It is important to take time to engage with them on a daily basis. • Giving children choices will make them feel empowered. Letting them make their own choices will boost their confidence where they can learn to trust their own judgment. Allowing children to pick out their own clothes will make them feel happy and comfortable, even if they are mismatched. Children like to be good helpers and contribute – whether it’s asking to help make dinner, sweep the floor or pick up toys. They enjoy small tasks which make them feel as if they’re contributing to the family.

learn by observation; they’ll treat other people the way you do. Be kind when you talk about other people, especially in front of your children • When children problem solve it nurtures their self-esteem. Before you jump in and solve problems for them, give suggestions as to how they can find a solution to the situation all on their own. Help them to find strategies they can use to solve problems themselves. • Children will shine with positive reinforcement. Along the same lines as being specific with praise, look for opportunities to point out character-building compliments. If children are struggling with something but finally start to catch on, applaud them on their perseverance and their positive attitude to have kept trying even though it was a struggle.
• Show an interest in the things your children are passionate about. They may enjoy time building, drawing, or cooking. As a parent, show an interest in their passions and even give them a go yourself.
These are some simple ways to boost confidence and sense of worth.
• Try to inspire confidence in your child and encourage respect for everyone around them. Children
Before you know it, your child will be confident, self assured and have a positive outlook on life.
Remember, raising confident youngsters is about taking one step at a time.

KNOW THE RISKS
heed the message
Kamilla Andersson
We’ve all heard the ‘slip, slop, slap and wrap’ urgings a thousand times yet, so many Kiwis don’t heed the message or fail to realise the seriousness of melamonas and skin cancers in New Zealand. KAMILLA ANDERSSON from Actuelle Beauty Clinic, talks about the risks Kiwi sun-worshippers run. Most of us know skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand, with 90% of all skin cancer cases attributed to excess sun exposure, yet every summer sees hundreds of beachgoers stretched out on the sand baking under a hot sun with very little protection.
the skin’s surface without being absorbed inside the body.
increase the amount of time spent in the sun.
Scientists can now break down particles of (mineral) zinc oxide to be small enough to appear clear on the skin surface – gone are the days of white faces!
We know our rates are amongst the highest in the world, with more than 13 new cases every day. So why are we not wearing sunscreen every day?
Staying out of the sun is the best protection, however, we all need a little Vitamin D for strong bones and good health. It’s important to strike a balance between sensible sun exposure and wise sun protection.
Why do I still get burnt? The protective effect of sunscreen depends on the correct application. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure to allow time for it to dry and be absorbed into the skin. You need approximately 1/4 of a teaspoon of (mineral) for an average face. If you perspire or rub your face, you must reapply protection.
Do we think it should only be applied if the sun is shining, between 10am and 2pm or just through summer? The reality is, if it’s day time, then its sunscreen time! Chemical vs Mineral? There are two groups of sunscreen products: chemical sunscreens and physical (mineral) sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens act by absorbing into the skin, and once inside the skin, they absorb UV light. After a period of time, these chemicals are broken down and are taken up by the bloodstream. Today the use of physical (mineralbased) sunscreens are preferred due to their ability to physically reflect both UVA and UVB rays off
What SPF do I choose and what does PA+ mean? Understanding sunscreen labels can be confusing. SPF measures protect wearers from UVB rays, the rays which result in sunburn. PA+ labels are a rating system to measure how much protection a product gives against skin-ageing UVA rays which also contribute to skin cancer. Never rely on SPF levels alone, an SPF30 filters 96.7% of UV radiation and SPF50 filters 98% of UV radiation. Choose broad spectrum cover that will fight both UVA and B rays (PA+ and SPF). Sunscreen should be used to decrease exposure to UV radiation, not to
Does sunscreen go on before or after moisturiser? Mineral sunscreen should be the last product applied to give maximum reflection opportunity. Unfortunately, wearing moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup each with SPF, all at the same time, does NOT give three times the protection. Having additional layers of protection will increase the highest protection
level, but they don’t add together. At the end of the day, any form of sunscreen is better than none at all – otherwise, stay indoors.
WE CAN

“That’s the big thing lacking these days. ‘Connectivity’ is going online and finding things out but that’s not ‘connecting’. A high flying inspiration Whitford-based, personal stylist, Estelle Pape has a passion for empowering people to live their best lives through her work as an image consultant, life and leadership coach. JES MAGILL follows Estelle’s extraordinary career and finds out who and what has inspired her along the way.
Estelle Pape was born to teach, lead and inspire. Dynamic, warm and curious, she says her commitment to reaching her potential and helping others do the same is in her DNA. She is already familiar to many EastLife readers as the former Head of Department, Accounting and Commerce at Pakuranga College (2003 to 2006), sharing the exact same tenure with the school’s inspirational principal, Bali Haque. “Bali took Pakuranga College from good to great,” Estelle says. “He was an amazing leader and a strategic trailblazer who changed the way we taught.” And, personally, Estelle also celebrates Bali for taking the time to invest in her own career as a leader. “I was really moved by that,” she says. Statuesque at 1.8m, and extremely stylish with a strong twist of individuality, Estelle was born in South Africa where she gained her BComm, a Higher Teaching Diploma and trained as a personal stylist too. She then taught high school in her hometown for two years before embracing her love for flying; a passion inherited from her aviation executive father. Joining Emirates, she worked as a flight attendant for five years before immigrating to New Zealand in 2003 and taking up her role at Pakuranga College. But, in 2006, the urge to spread her wings again accelerated when she saw an advertisement from a leading New www.eastlife.co.nz
Zealand airline carrier, wanting to appoint 35 new ‘concierge’ roles. Flying long-haul on 777s, the concierge job description read like a flight attendant’s dream, she recalls. “Applicants needed to be personable, confident, great at making positive first impressions and assisting passengers with any queries about their flight or destination.” It seemed tailor-made for Estelle. She joined 34 others and underwent two weeks of “ridiculously enjoyable training, including being ordered to get lost and found in LA” before the fully-fledged concierges took to the skies. Soon after, Estelle was asked to front an internal ‘super hero’ campaign for the airline’s staff, teaching the epitome of great customer service. “It was an amazing opportunity which seemed to draw on everything I’d studied for and loved to do,” she says. “My training in the airline industry influenced me strongly, especially on the importance of first impressions. I was taught you always dress to the position you aspire to; to always dress business class because you never know when you’ll get upgraded.” While she loved her work, Estelle says there was still a little voice on her shoulder whispering that there was more potential to reach. She
knew it was time to focus on her leadership skills and take the next step to Flight Attendant Number One, the managerial role captains rely on. So, her hand went up for promotion. “I think for a people-person like me, systems and procedures are something you really need to ingrain within yourself. So this was a great opportunity to express my leadership, and become a leader. It was uncomfortable initially but then I really got into it. “As part of a new training initiative, our cabin crew manager and team flew to New York to meet Simon Sinek, author of What is Your Why. “Together with Simon we created the content for the customer service and leadership training videos for the airline’s cabin leaders and cabin crew. I was lucky enough to be one of the presenters and for me, delivering the programme was life changing, personal and powerful.” Following several more stellar years in the air, Estelle felt it was time to bring her skills back home and help others reach their potential as well – “I wanted to make an impact in my own way.”
THE FLYING STYLIST Keen to set out on her new path, and already an accomplished life and business coach, Estelle took a refresher course in personal styling before launching her consultancy last year as a personal stylist with a difference.
Drawing on her love for fashion, style and empowerment, she launched The Flying Stylist to help people discover and enhance their own unique style so they could act with confidence and authenticity in the world – “that’s everyone’s birth-right, Estelle maintains. Now, through her interactive workshops, people can feel confident and empowered, discover their style personality and have fun in the process. “I really want people to live their best lives, not to be shy and hide, but have the confidence to be themselves.” Concerned that fast fashion is “polluting”, Estelle plays her part for the environment by repurposing pre-loved garments such as denim jackets and customising them to her clients’ taste and style. She also offers her own concierge service, whereby she selects pieces for time poor clients, items she knows they’ll love and relate to. “It’s so important to make powerful connections, to be surrounded by people who encourage you and speak to your potential,” she says. “That’s the big thing lacking these days. ‘Connectivity’ is going online and finding things out but that’s not ‘connecting’. Connecting with the right people in the right way, little by little, means you can positively change a life and that’s what I love to do; help people to look and feel their best.” eastlife | november 2019 |

Oh la la, it’s balayage! Vivo Hair Salon in Howick outlines the ease and benefits of balayage hair colouring.
We love the French for their seemingly effortless style – a silk scarf, a classic pearl earring or subtle cat flick eyeliner to add a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ to a look! When it comes to our tresses, ‘balayage’, the French word meaning ‘to paint’ or ‘to sweep’ colour onto hair has fast become the favoured way to gain that uncomplicated ‘oh la la’ factor. Our Vivo Balayage Package is incredibly popular for those wanting a low maintenance yet high impact change. So, what is balayage, and why is it so magnifique? Suitable for all haircuts and colours, the roots are kept soft and barely receive any highlight colour. That’s right, this also means low maintenance colour as you’ll see no demarcation line with regrowth – perfect when you want to extend time between salon visits. As it’s worked down each carefully selected section, your Vivo stylist will paint the hair with more saturation of colour, meaning the ends are the brightest. This produces a gentle graduation of colour which goes from dark to light, just like those naturally sun-kissed strands after a summer spent at the beach.
Balayage is a technique which gives Vivo colourists the ability to highlight a haircut and their clients’ best features with the most freedom. They may suggest adding face-framing highlights or painting single curls while leaving others natural. Balayage can also give thinner hair a little extra dimension and the illusion of volume. Of course, balayage is our favourite way of elevating a hair colour – adding red or golden highlights to brunettes, rich browns to bring dimension to black hair, or creating that classic, beachy blonde with favourite sandy hues. If you have a few grey hairs coming in, your Vivo colourist can even target those and give them a little camouflage. Balayage has been so popular throughout New Zealand that Vivo has custom-designed an entire training programme to teach its stylists how to be experts in the technique. Want your hair as chic as a Parisian? Check out our Balayage Package online now – www.vivo.co.nz!
WHEN DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR
dentures? HELEN STEHBENS, talks about denture care. Old mattresses… you use them every day. You can get to sleep on them but you may not have a restful, comfortable night and you may wake up with a sore back or neck. Dentures can be like this too. In fact, because of wear and tear you may be unable to eat a varied, healthy diet and you could be spending most of your day either in pain or discomfort to which you have grown accustomed. Dentures, like mattresses, are porous so they retain stains and odours and can taste stale. They wear down and the teeth change shape which is very ageing for your smile. Over the years, the shape and
size of jaw bones change, too. Fortunately, dentures which haven’t worn down can be relined to produce a nice tight fit again. However, if there is significant wear then the height of your bite will be shortened. This can lead to an increase in the lines and wrinkles around the mouth some of which can become infected with fungus (thrush). This over-closure (shortening) means less support for the jaw joint, neck and back. It’s a littleknown fact that the facial muscles are bracing muscles which support the spine. As you can see there are many benefits to updating you old, worn dentures.

MAKE YOUR MOVEMBER MARK
without growing a moustache Across the world, Movember foundations give more than lip service during November to help raise research funds for men’s health. Here, in New Zealand, the international call to ‘grow a mo’ is followed ardently by lads across the country who understand the need to battle issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. But the gesture is also accompanied by a massive fundraising drive. However, while more than five million people worldwide take part in the event not everyone wants or is in a position to grow a moustache. Fortunately, there are other ways to help such as:
• JOIN THE MOVE CROWD – Run or walk 60 kilometres during the month of November. That’s one kilometre for every man who commits suicide every minute of every hour. You can go it alone or in a group, do it at home, outside or at the gym. Tell friends and family members about it. Some of them might join you or make a donation.
• HOST A ‘MO-MENT’ – Organise a fundraising event for family members, colleagues or a group of your best mates – make it a ‘barbie and beers’, cook up a dinner feast, meet for breakfast, tee up a sports tourney or crank up the music and party. Ticket the event with all funds going to the foundation.
• CREATE YOUR OWN MOVEMBER CHALLENGE For example, ask your mates to take part in a sponsored Ironman-style event or organise a group to tackle Waikato’s Hakarimata Scenic Reserve 335 metre summit climb which takes in 1349 stairs – be sure to rope in plenty of sponsors to help the cause.
• MAKE A DONATION – If time is short simply make a donation to someone involved in the campaign. Alternatively give to the foundation directly by visiting www.nz.movember. com. Every little bit helps to grow awareness, research and treatment of men’s health issues, which for many decades fell beneath the wellness radar.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY! KRISTINE JENSEN, owneroptometrist at Eyes of Howick talks about the importance of knowing your history – healthwise. It was November 1769 when HMS Endeavour sailed around the top of the Coromandel Peninsula as part of its ‘voyage of science and discovery’. Captained by Lieutenant James Cook and carrying 92 men, including botanist, Joseph Banks, as well as astronomers, artists, zoologists and clockmakers, the mission was to find longitude and therefore accurately chart the unknown southern lands. This was to be achieved by observing the transit of planet Mercury across the sun – an event expected to occur on November 9 that year.

Maori legend tells us that it was Kupe, in his large waka, who courageously navigated the southern seas many centuries earlier from Hawaiiki – an island or group of islands in Polynesia. Kupe’s landing place was known as Te Whitianga-a-kupe and was within Mercury Bay. As I type this, I too am in Mercury Bay – Wharekaho Bay or Simpson’s Beach, Whitianga, to be exact. I am here for the Tuia Encounters 250 – a weekend to commemorate the early meeting of Maori and Captain James Cook 250 years ago. Wharekaho is my special place. Having holidayed there all my life, it is where I feel rested and grounded– my turangawaewae. So, it was a privilege to witness some of the commemorations
which included the replica HMS Endeavour sailing into Mercury Bay and spending the weekend anchored off shore. It was the Ngati Hei, ancestor and chief Toawaka, who welcomed Cook onto Wharekaho where they exchanged gifts and also took the historical first step toward these two civilisations developing a mutual respect. The fact that this significant part of our nation’s history took place a mere 250 years ago makes me realise we have come a long way for such a young nation. My knowledge of NZ history is limited but this weekend has added a fresh aspect to my personal learning about the Cook-Toawaka encounter at Wharekaho Bay. I am encouraged that my daughter will be further enlightened during her years of schooling now that New Zealand history has been included in the curricula. Knowledge of personal history is also important when it comes to protecting your general and ocular health – it is useful to know family history of any disorders which may have an inheritable aspect. So, don’t forget, when you are next sitting with your loved ones, pass on and learn from those valuable tidbits of information you may not have previously shared. As the saying goes: “In order to know where you’re going, you need to know where you come from”.

Say ‘no’ to incontinence Modern society has gradually dispensed with many ‘taboo’ subjects, especially those in the health arena, but one which still remains sensitive, and which most people dodge talking about, is urinary incontinence. improvement after a single session. Typically they keep improving over the next few weeks and at the end of the three weeks the results can be outstanding.
However, Pakuranga registered nurse and appearance medicine professional, Linda Gormly believes this cause of so much embarrassment and distress needs to be more widely addressed.
“Some people can’t make it to the letterbox and back without leaking and going to shopping can be nightmare. With the BTL emsella treatment, such sufferers have been amazed at the results including improved confidence when attending social occasions or going shopping.
“For many people, especially women, who are by far the greatest sufferers, dealing with incontinence has generally meant wearing pads, nappies or special incontinence pants. They may also practice specific exercises to strength the pelvic muscles and, in some cases, may require a surgical procedure.
“However, those are extreme cases; for many with less debility leakage, it can mean an end to pads, no more embarrassing leaks when coughing or sneezing or renewed control over sudden urges such as arriving at the front door and suddenly needing ‘to go’ rather desperately.”
“None are entirely satisfactory but new BTL emsella treatments are a great option for women of any age who want a non-invasive solution for leakage as well as improved quality of life,” Linda says. “Although most people associate incontinence with the elderly, in fact, it can affect women of all ages. Childbirth, menopause and body ageing can all lead to incontinence prompted by insufficient support of the pelvic organs by the pelvic floor muscles. This subsequently affects bladder control.” But, now, Linda is hugely excited by her purchase of a BTL emsella chair – believed to be the only one in New Zealand at present. “It employs electromagnetic energy to generate deep pelvic floor muscle stimulation which leads to regained control over strengthened pelvic floor muscles and the bladder. There is no pain

Linda says most clients who have the two half hour sessions per week over three weeks report significant pad reduction and marked improvement in their quality of life.
“However, BLT emsella was something else again,” she says. “I was attending a conference in Australia where the chair was demonstrated. I was so impressed I bought it on the spot.

INGREDIENTS
If using the food processor, add ground almonds, coconut, orange zest, cocoa, baking powder and eggs, and continue blending until mixture is smooth and well combined. Otherwise, pour mixture into a large bowl, add other ingredients and whisk until smooth and well combined.
• 350–400g beetroot, peeled and chopped • 1/4 cup coconut oil or melted butter • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 tsp vanilla essence or extract • 1 cup (100g) ground almonds • 1 1/4 cup (100g) desiccated coconut • Finely grated zest of an orange • 3 1/2 Tbsp dark cocoa (Nadia uses Dutch cocoa) or cacao powder • 1 tsp baking powder • 5 medium free-range eggs Ganache • 85g dark chocolate, chopped • 1/3 cup cream or coconut cream • 1 punnet fresh berries, to garnish
METHOD Preheat oven to 170°C. Lightly grease and line the base and sides of a 20–21cm cake tin with baking paper. Boil beetroot for 10–15 minutes until tender. Drain beetroot well and place in a food processor or
34 | eastlife | november 2019
Pour into prepared cake tin and bake for an hour or until cake is just set. Leave to cool for at least 10 minutes before removing from tin and transferring to a cake rack, then allow to cool completely before icing. To make ganache, place chocolate and cream/coconut cream in a heatproof bowl and melt together in the microwave in 30 second bursts, then stir until smooth and glossy. Alternatively, place bowl above a small pot of barely simmering water and stir gently every now and again until melted. Allow ganache to cool slightly before using. Spread ganache over the top of the cake and a little down the sides and top with fresh berries.
This light, almost sponge-like cake is one that is great as a morning or afternoon tea-type cake by itself (as it’s not overly sweet or rich), or you can make it more decadent and special with the chocolate ganache and fresh berries. Gluten-free and dairy-free: use coconut oil and cream and dairy-free dark chocolate

linseed, spices and kidney beans. Mix all the ingredients together by hand. Leave mixture to sit for at least 15 minutes to allow for binding. To make salsa, in another bowl, combine the remaining diced onion, tomato, mango and coriander. Season with salt and pepper to taste and squeeze in the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Divide the burger patty mixture and form into 5 patties (about 110g each). In a pan over medium–high heat, fry each patty for 10-15 minutes till they are crispy on the outside. Lightly toast the buns in the same pan after you’ve cooked the patties. To assemble the burgers, place a spoon of relish on the base of each bun. Then layer the lettuce, a generous spoonful of salsa, a burger patty, a drizzle of chipotle sauce and a few corn chips. On the top half of the bun, spread a spoonful of smashed avocado and place on top of the burger. Add bun half and serve. www.eastlife.co.nz

HONEY, HONEY! Some say a taste of honey is sweeter than wine and that may well be true of the Mount Somers’ black label manuka honey being sold in New World supermarkets for the first time. The launch marks an introduction of a large selection of one-of-a-kind flavour profiles including six new Mount Somers flavours – vanilla, caramel, orange, lemon, lime, and ginger – all naturally processed free of refined sugar and affordably priced at $9.99 for a 350g jar. The new range also includes ‘Cook and Bake’, a 1 kg tub of Honeydew priced at $19.95, and Manuka monoflorals in UMF 5+ and 10+, Rata, raw Kamahi honey, Forest Dew and Clover priced from $9.95. All now available across New World supermarkets.
REDUCED SUGAR CEREAL LAUNCHED What’s not to like about new Coco Munch cereal just launched by New Zealand-owned, Blue Frog Breakfast in a bid to reduce sugar in children’s diets. Made from natural puffed rice, cocoa powder and coconut sugar and sweetened with monk fruit, Coco Munch contains 60% less sugar than the current market leader says Blue Frog Breakfast founder and CEO, Scotty Baragwanath. It is also gluten-free and a good source of vitamins B1, B3, folate and iron. With children sometimes eating the equivalent of three sugar cubes or more just at breakfast, Mr Baragwanath says this amounts to more than 1000 cubes of sugar a year. National guidance recommends children from 7-10 should consume no more than six sugar cubes (24-30g) a day. A delicious new market entry, Coco Munch (RRP $6.99) is available nationwide.
HÄAGEN-DAZS N BARISTA COLLECTIO Lennon and McCartney, Hillary and Tenzing, Hudson and Hall, beer and barbecues, coffee and chocolate – the best of the best often work in pairs. Featuring a range of goodies (from ice-cream tubs to bars – RRP varies) this collection is available until February from select supermarkets nationwide, with Barista stick bars exclusive to designated BP stores. www.eastlife.co.nz

DOUGH?
Nuts! ‘RISING’ STAR: Some people may earn their daily bread on the shop floor but, when it comes to high end furniture design, the drawing board can also yield rich pickings. Created by Ukrainian artist, Victoria Yakusha (working with Faina Design), the ‘Made of dough’ chair caused quite a stir at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, late last year. Victoria used valkuvannia (a modelling technique which involves the coating of a solid surface with a mixture of organic materials) to develop this rustic look. Held together by recycled steel frames, these chairs are covered with special mixture of cellulose (recycled paper), linen, clay, wood chips and straw to resemble the appearance of dough. In addition, as they are coated with biopolymer based on corn starch, they are safe for the environment and designed to last a lifetime. For more information regarding these chairs (as well as other pieces by Faina) see faina.design. Pieces can be purchased and shipped to New Zealand by arrangement.

Maureen Beattie – OF SURF AND TURF A shining example of good taste with a view to thrill, long time east Auckland local, Maureen Beattie’s home is set to star in an upcoming garden ramble, JON RAWLINSON reports. Driving up to Maureen Beattie’s Port Waikato property it’s hard not to be amazed by her superb home; but turn around and there’s a view to die for. Oh, and there’s the far from insignificant matter of the garden too! Perched overlooking the stunning ruggedness of Sunset Beach, this home is definitely something worth writing about. “People are blown away by the view as it does provide quite the ‘wow’ factor. We don’t want the garden to take away from the view, just accentuate it,” Maureen says. Ordinarily, garden rambles restrict visitors to outside areas but, during the upcoming Sunset Surf Club Garden Ramble, Maureen Beattie will open her front door as well as her garden gates– a good thing too as both home and garden work together to amaze. “My mother was a passionate gardener and had beautiful display gardens as well as growing

vegetables. Even after I left school, before I could even walk into the house at weekends, my mother had me walking around the garden to see what was flowering. I think my love of gardening grew from there,” she recalls. “After living in Mount Wellington for 25 years, we moved to Bucklands Beach and lived on Sea Spray Drive, for about 20 years. I had a fantastic cottage garden – I probably had around 100 roses – and spent hour after hour working away on it.” The former owner of Mount Wellington-based Seaboard joinery, Maureen attended interior design courses over the years and has long held an interest in art history – it shows; good taste is in no short supply indoors or out. Since her father built the family’s first holiday home at Sunset Beach in the 1950s, the area has been a home away from home for Maureen. In 2001, initial work
began on her current abode. Beginning with a blank canvas, the home and garden were carved out of the bush. “Building here was about escaping back to my roots. The property was just bush when we bought it. Silver Fern Landscapes did the hard landscaping – and it was hard work! For (roughly) the first eight years, I maintained the garden myself but I was still working fulltime and only coming here at weekends so I have had help since.” Natives aren’t common in this garden but (in a manner of speaking) all plants need to be native to an environment where only the strong flourish. “We’re on tank water so the garden must be able to tolerate dry summers, which is why I have plants such as agaves, aloes and gazanias,” Maureen explains. “We’ve had to work with whatever will survive.”
Living at the property (with construction of her new Ellerslie apartment in progress), has allowed Maureen more time than usual to enjoy her garden. And, soon enough, the general public will be able to enjoy it too. “I’ve probably only been to a couple of garden rambles, including one in Remuera years ago, and I’ve visited Ayrlies Garden in Whitford more than once as well,” she says. “When I was working it was more difficult but I would like to go to more rambles now as there is a lot of inspiration people can draw from them.” Designed to raise funds for the Sunset Beach surf boat team – Maureen has had a long association with the club – the Sunset Surf Club Garden Ramble (on November 30) features 11 gardens in total. For more information, contact the club via facebook.com/ sunsetbeachlifeguards. www.eastlife.co.nz

IT’S ALL ABOUT STYLE The seat is made from an antibacterial material to enhance hygiene levels while its deodorising carbon filter and LED night light provide extra convenience.
French curve, wrap, slim, elite – are we talking dresses or perhaps handbags? Well, toilet seats actually! Yes, there is a look; there is a shape. And, there is a definite trend! Kohler Company, a global specialist in bathroom design, has released its latest take on the toilet seat styles now trending in New Zealand. Shape – read aesthetics – is a key consideration, as is hygiene. Kohler’s latest offering places these demands at the top of its features list.
wraps over the seat, is a more conventional design, producing a seamless profile. The Slim is a low profile seat and lid which is an inspired choice for the contemporary bathroom.
With models such as the Grande (back to the wall and wall hung configurations), Kohler offers a choice of three toilet seat options, all of which fit the same toilet pan.
The third and most deluxe offering is the Elite – an identical profile to the Slim but has the added benefit of a concealed scent dispenser (activated when the user comes in contact with the seat) and a night light.

aspect of seat design and Kohler opts for high quality, non-stain resin in a smooth, contoured shape to ensure a comfortable, ergonomic fit on posteriors of many sizes. For those seeking a sense of opulence, Veil is the brand’s flagship intelligent toilet – a selfcleaning bidet and toilet in one appliance – featuring the French curve heated seat with a gently dished shape to minimise the pressure points and create extra comfort.
Such is the importance of superior design in the humble toilet seat that Modern Life, Kohler’s most recent addition, has won a prestigious international design award! The brand’s first truly rimless toilet, Modern Life is available as back to wall suite and wall faced configurations. It received the Red Dot Design Award for discreet design and outstanding practical cleaning features. It offers the choice of Slim or Elite seats for both pan configurations. Toilet seats such as Kohler’s Grande, Reach, Modern Life and Parliament are quiet close with vertical quick release operation – the seat can be quickly detached with a ‘one-hand lift’ for fast and easy cleaning.

INTEREST RATES HEADING LOWER Low interest rate returns call for wise investment, advises Forsyth Barr team. With interest rates trending lower both globally and locally, investors who require regular income are facing a dilemma as to how to structure their investments in this new and unfamiliar investment environment. They have three main choices: • Reduce their income needs and adjust their lifestyle • Start to use some capital to top up the shortfall • Look for alternative investment options At this point in the cycle, some investors may seek out riskier investments in order to produce a return which provides them with the level of income they require. However, riskier investments offer the potential of higher returns because they carry a greater risk. It is wise for anyone considering this option to take professional advice which is something David, Esha and Mark can assist with. Investing in shares and bonds often
carries more risk than investing in bank term deposits, but the ability to diversify creates an opportunity to reduce that risk. Just like owning rental property, investing in financial markets offers potential for income and capital gain. David, Esha and Mark draw on the wide expertise and experience of Forsyth Barr’s team of awardwinning strategists and analysts to build portfolios of investments that offer returns which take account of risk. To do this they assess their clients’ needs and capacity for risk, and structure tailored portfolios which reflect those requirements. At all times they consider the quality, liquidity and diversification attributes of the securities that make up the whole portfolio. We look forward to discussing how our investment services can work for you. Changing face of insurance House and car insurances are sold in New Zealand through local brokers and insurance companies. Behind the frontline of cover is the back office of claims, paid out by offshore reinsurers who are responsible for risk assessment and premium costs. Wynyard Wood solicitor, RICHARD OSBOURNE, explains more.
Two factors are driving insurance risk assessment and premium costs in New Zealand. Firstly, because of potential earthquakes and volcanoes, New Zealand is considered a very risky country. Those risks are accelerated by more extreme weather patterns and some degree of sea level changes.
world scale. The result of the payouts has been a re-assessment by reinsurers of local New Zealand risk being high in terms of likelihood and amount.
Secondly, the ability of computer systems to gather data, analyse it comprehensively and cheaply, means so-called big data has become a tool for premium risk settings.
A further result is that some higher risk insured clients will pay more in premiums than others. This will be an important decision factor for anyone choosing to buy a house in a high-risk area.
In the past, insurers recognised that some parts of the country were riskier than others but the theoretical risks of earthquakes and insurance in one area, compared with another, were smoothed out across New Zealand with an element of cross-subsidy between higher and lower risk insured areas.
For those who have already purchased a house in a high-risk area, potentially, it may become uninsurable.
The Christchurch earthquakes brought home the risks and shattered this assumption. Offshore reinsurer pay-outs to locals have been massive on a
In turn, this has led to local products now being much more aligned to local risk factors (earthquake or flood zones).
While in certain areas, the market will drive premium increases to the point of being unaffordable, or refusal to cover, the wider societal issues associated with already-purchased properties in those areas will most likely drive some level of government backup support. The insurers’ and reinsurers’ ability
to define risk in more and more detail for specific property areas can only increase the importance of insurance as a purchase factor. For vehicle insurance, there has been a similar past pattern of aggregating risk i.e. younger and older drivers may pay higher premiums based on group assumptions rather than their individual, actual capabilities. Telematics (which is the real-time gathering of information about the use of a vehicle or asset by an individual) means that insurers can now assess the risks for a driver as evidenced by how they drive over a period of assessment. This may mean premiums could reduce for an insured driver as a reward for their less-risky actual behaviour within a high-risk category, such as youth or an advanced age.
In some instances, telematics may allow those insured to modify the operational risks of the vehicle so closely as to allow self or reduced insurance. For example, if telematics reduces the risk of theft because of real time monitoring and vehicle disablement, this could allow selfinsurance or the removal of theft cover. Overall, expect a more granular or specific approach to New Zealand insurance risk for the future.

We know Jacs As EastLife’s October issue went to print, the PM was on a mission with visits to Japan and the USA taking her focus. So, we’ve had some catching up to do! However, as some of these summations (based on reports from Ms Ardern’s office) reveal, other matters have also demanded her attention. ALL ‘HALLE’, CHRISTCHURCH CALL More work may be needed to define terrorist content – let alone stop terrorist violence – but the PM says ‘significant progress’ has already been made to eliminate it... online. Armed with $17 million in new funding, the Department of Internal Affairs will combat violent extremism on the internet, investigating and prosecuting those committing offences, Ms Ardern confirmed. ”We have, collectively, made real strides toward both preventing and responding to the very real harm caused by terrorist and violent extremist content,” she said during a speech at the UN in late September. In October, Ms Ardern credited The Christchurch Call with helping block live streaming of a shooting in Halle, Germany during which two people were killed. “Our online world must be a force for good where we can exchange ideas, share technology, and maintain civil liberties, while protecting New Zealanders from objectionable content. “[We] determined, in the days after March 15, we would do all we could to ensure what happened on our shores would never happen anywhere else again... and we are committed to a free, open and secure internet. Together we are building a safer world.”
TIME, TIDES AND CLIMATE CHANGE A new agreement will be crucial in ensuring farmers can weather the climate change storm, Ms Ardern contends. “We have a world-first agreement as part of our plan to tackle the long-term challenge of climate change and we’ve done that by reaching an historic consensus www.eastlife.co.nz
with our primary sector,” she said regarding the new Primary Sector Climate Change Commitment, which sees farming organisations and the Government join forces in efforts to reduce environmentallyharmful emissions. “For too long politicians have passed the buck and caused uncertainty for everyone while the need for climate action was clear. This plan provides certainty and puts us shoulder-to-shoulder on a path to reduce emissions... giving farmers the autonomy to plan to do so and reward those who do.” The Commitment follows Ms Ardern’s warning to the UN in September: “Civil unrest, mass drought, mass diseases, and exhausted resources are just some of the consequences of a failure to address climate change,” she said. “[However] we run the risk of a society that believes all is lost and that it is simply too late. It is not... Now is the time for optimism and for hope and, crucially, a plan.”
BIG IN JAPAN Ms Ardern’s trip to China – sorry, Japan! – seems to have borne fruit thanks to an agreement with her Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, to strengthen the Strategic Cooperative Partnership. “In the face of global economic head winds our economic relationship with Japan is becoming even more important,” she said late last month. “Japan is, increasingly, one of [our] most important partners. We are close friends who share common values and interests.” New Zealand’s fourth largest trading partner, Japan is a fellow member of the CPTPP trade agreement. “The CPTPP is already reaping benefits with New Zealand goods exports to Japan increasing by 5 percent in the first seven months
of this year. Key products have experienced significant growth, earning millions and creating jobs,” the PM confirmed. Ms Ardern cemented agreements for developing such ‘next gen’ technologies as bio-fuels, AI and robotics and more. “[Recent] announcements allow us to further share innovative expertise to the benefit of both countries. These partnerships will help grow jobs and our economy for the benefit of all.” Ms Ardern also engaged in discussions regarding other matters such as regional security, the Christchurch Call and, of course, the little matter of a certain cup. “[We] have long enjoyed friendships with Japan, including through education, cultural and
sporting contacts,” she added. “I expressed [our] deep gratitude for looking after the All Blacks and our fans during the Rugby World Cup and wished them great success in hosting the tournament.”
ROYAL TWO TOUR The buzz is building as a prince and a duchess mark a queen’s jubilee with a tour of ‘the colonies’ this month. “I look forward to welcoming Their Royal Highnesses back to New Zealand and hope they see as much of our beautiful country and people as possible,” Ms Ardern says. While Prince William, The Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex have other engagements, Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall are still likely to receive a warm welcome. eastlife | november 2019 |
