Senseless deaths With the world burdened by so many problems I can see why it is difficult to prioritise which solutions to work on first. But after Forest & Bird recently reported the death of five endangered albatross, four sealions and seven Hector’s dolphins, I have to wonder whether the New Zealand Government is doing enough to protect our precious marine life.

It seems, all five albatross were caught on a commercial long lines, the sealions in fishing nets and the dolphins in trawls nets.

This has prompted Forest & Bird to urge the Government to speed up moves to install cameras on commercial fishing boats, halt trawling in endangered dolphin territory and to find better ways to protect our endangered creatures.

It is interesting to note that the Department of Conservation lists all five albatross (four Antipodean and one Gibson) as nationally critical (the same degree as the kakapo); the Hector’s dolphins are listed by the department as nationally endangered and the sea lions as endangered.

system is fixed Antipodean albatross will be extinct within 20 years.” She maintains the deaths were needless, cruel, appalling and completely unacceptable.

Although MPI has pointed out that fishing crews were operating entirely within the law, Ms Baird says: “Imagine a law which permitted limitless accidental kakapo deaths at the hands of any industry. It is abundantly clear that a system which allows endangered species to be killed as ‘incidental by-catch’ by the fishing industry is completely broken.”

I see her point. While, I also realise that finding ways to prevent fishing disasters like these will not be easy, I have to ask, is Fishing New Zealand (FNZ) really doing enough to protect endangered marine creatures, to stop illegal fishing practices and to find better means of securing catches?

What’s more, how dedicated is the Government when it comes to enforcing regulations? It seems to me that the country’s leaders and FNZ need to be more proactive, regulations more stringent and monitoring of rules, increased.

Perhaps we even need more

marine reserves – after all we have a lot of ocean around us; are there enough marine reserves?

It’s pleasing that FNZ reported the deaths but I wonder how many go unreported? I was upset when I first heard about the death of four Hector’s dolphins but I felt positively sick when three more dolphin deaths were reported little more than a week later. At that rate we might not see them around for much longer.

There is a wonderful children’s book – Little Hector and the Big Blue Whale, which teaches youngsters about the Hector’s dolphin. It reminds me that if we don’t do more now to protect this species it may be that the only way we know about them is by reading a book which documents them as ‘extinct’. Is that the kind of legacy we want to leave our children?

What a tragedy that would be.

Q&A Kayleen Currie with

– Oxfam Trailwalker

Oxfam Trailwalker is often considered the ultimate team challenge event. Every step walkers take helps raise vital funds to support people living in poverty around the world. Part of an international series, which has raised more than $190 million globally to support Oxfam’s life-saving work, the walk was set up by the legendary elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment in 1981 as a military exercise to test teamwork, endurance and determination.

While this fulfilling physical and mental challenge, encompassing two distances – 50km and 100km – may seem daunting, this year 263 teams have registered for the two-day New Zealand event, setting off from Edgecumbe War Memorial Hall, in the Bay of Plenty, on March 23. Among them will be Botany’s Kayleen Currie and her team of Mark Edwards and Annette Mcfarlane from Pukekohe & Vicki Martin from Mt Wellington, all active people who like to get out and challenge themselves.

How did you hear about Oxfam Trailwalker and what did you have to do to register?

A lot of running events pop up on my Facebook feed and an advert for the Oxfam Trailwalker came up midDecember last year. I was looking for a new challenge, something to push me a bit harder. This seemed the perfect event. I visited the website and registered my interest.

The next day I received a call to give me more information. Then it was just a matter of officially registering a team, coming up with a team name – Taking a Hike – paying the registration fee and then inviting the other members of the team to join in. Support crew also needed to be registered with a minimum of two for each team.

Is this the first time you have all participated and is there a minimum age?

Yes, it’s the first time for all of us and we are very excited to be part of something that is not just physically challenging but to be able to support an organisation which is doing its best to help rid the world of poverty. The minimum age to participate is 18.

Your team has opted to cover the 50km trail, correct? Are you fitness amateurs or do you participate in individual or team sports?

We are indeed entered in the 50km event; the 100km seemed a bit too daunting given we’ve come into it quite late compared to other

teams. I wouldn’t say we are fitness amateurs, but we aren’t athletes either! My husband refers to me as an ‘aflete’ rather than an athlete!

Mark and Annette do a lot of hiking; Mark used to play soccer too but is now into mountain biking and running. Vicki has trekked Nepal and plays 7-aside sub football. I normally participate in mud and obstacle runs. I’ve also run a couple of half marathons and have entered two more after the Trailwalker event.

What training are you doing to prepare for the walk and is special training necessary?

Vicki found a training programme which works on time rather than distance. We walk for an hour on two weekdays and then in the weekend it ramps up as the weeks go by. Two weeks before the event we are up to 10 hours two weeks before the event. It’s a mixture of trail, road and beach walking.

Do you need any special clothes or equipment?

There is a gear list provided of essential items such as first aid kit, survival blankets, mobile phones on different networks, blister prevention and treatment. Gear wise it’s really up to individuals but we all have hydration packs in which we can also carry extra gear such as socks, a rain jacket and food.

Is there a cost to participate in the walk and as it is a ‘fundraiser’

are you expected to meet any particular amount?

For the 50km distance there is a $150 entry fee per team member and then your team of four need to fundraise a minimum of $2000.

Oxfam provide a lot of assistance in the fundraising as far as sponsors that are on board and providing fundraising ideas. If registering a team, the fundraising target must be met seven days prior to the event although extra donations can be made until the end of April.

As a team do you walk together or do you split up during the walk?

We all stick together. We start as a team of four and hopefully finish as a team of four, barring any injuries.

If teams fall short on members can Oxfam assist in any way?

They can; there is a FB page where people can post if they are looking for team members or are looking for a team. Oxfam have been very proactive in assisting in this area.

This year’s trail leaves from Whakatane, does it return there and where does it travel?

First Leg: Starts at Edgecumbe War Memorial Hall and ends at Taiwahakaea Marae (17.93kms).

This leg takes in the Rangitaiki River stopbank, the Edgecumbe Golden Kiwifruit orchard, Thornton, 4WD sand tracks and then walkers head towards Whakatane airport.

Second Leg: Taiwahakaea Marae to Ohope Hall (22.01km). We head towards the Coastlands beach via a sand dune track and then hit footpaths which take us into Ohope.

We then walk along the Warren Cole Walkway through residential areas and on to Kohi Point Walkway, up a lot of steep stairs to the look-out then back down again to the beach ending up at the hall.

Third Leg: Ohope Hall to Rex Morpeth Park (11.09km) – a lot of great scenery on this final leg where we follow undulating tracks to the finish line.

Where will funds raised from this year’s Oxfam Trailwalker be used?

Oxfam New Zealand works in the Pacific and Southeast Asia assisting communities to tackle the root causes of poverty. They help people to access safe water and sanitation, to build a sustainable livelihood, to provide education for their children and to live free from persecution and violence. Oxfam also responds rapidly to emergencies, helping keep survivors alive by supplying clean water and life-saving essentials.

This is a big event and involves more than just a few groups setting out along a selected route so what is involved in its organisation? Are there course marshals, supporters, assistance available along the route and if so what?

Vicki’s husband, John and two good friends, Emma Takarua and Joanne Juddery will be our support crew on the day. They will meet us at the end of each leg with any supplies we may need such as food or a change of shoes. One of our support crew can walk the last leg so John will be joining us. There will be an aid station at Whakatane Rowing Club which is about half way for the 50km event. you mention volunteers, is there an opportunity for people who don’t want to do the walk to assist in other ways? if so, are volunteers still needed? yes, Oxfam is still looking for volunteers to help with the event.

There are several different areas such as start line host, trail marshal, registration/support & parking marshal and more. Anyone interested should visit the website oxfamnz.volunteerlocal.com/ volunteer do volunteers have to be available for the entire length/time of the walk?

No, you can select time slots you want to help with from Friday, March 22 to Sunday March 24. If your shift is seven hours or longer, you must allow at least an eight-hour break (ideally 12 hours) before the next shift starts. Oxfam provides catering for the volunteers during the event weekend. is there a minimum/maximum age for volunteers and if so what? www.eastlife.co.nz

All volunteers must be over 16 years of age. Anyone aged between 16-18 must volunteer with a supervising adult. There’s no maximum age that I’m aware of. if you could be ceo of oxfam for a day what would be the fi rst thing you would do?

I would thank all the people who make it possible for Oxfam to do what they do. Without these selfless people who help raise funds (not just the Trailwalkers), Oxfam wouldn’t be able to help all those at risk due to poverty. if you invite any three people (living or dead) to dinner who would they be and why?

My mum who passed away nearly three years ago and my dad who now lives with me. They were the ones that instilled the empathy in me to want to reach out and help others.

The third person is my granddad on my mum’s side. He died at the age of 101 and was a great source of inspiration for me. He was always positive, active and hardworking. Traits I feel I also possess.

even dreadfully When in a foreign country it’s important to be adventurous and that means using the local language even when you don’t really know a word.

However, be aware, too, that inevitably there will be some excruciating moments when you get it terribly wrong. On the other hand, it’s so worthwhile when you can finally start to communicate with people in their native tongue.

I’ve had some awkward moments with my attempts at other languages.

I particularly remember a sultry summer’s day in Cairo. It was during Ramadan and nearing the time to break the fast so, hot and hungry Cairenes were battling the chaotic traffic to get home.

One taxi driver made a crazy manoeuvre, cutting us off; I immediately reacted. Leaning out the passenger window I yelled: “ye hamar” (you donkey) in my very best Arabic.

is a big difference in the Egyptian word for lettuce and the slang name for a woman’s intimate bits, but the subtle intonation escaped me. Readers can imagine the consternation among stall holders when I tried to bargain for the latter.

Of course, it’s a totally different story when you are working and living in a country. If you plan a couple of weeks touring in Egypt, you probably won’t need a lettuce or a donkey, but do try to learn the basic greetings, locals are generally so appreciative.

And, that goes for anywhere you travel. It really is useful to buy a small phrase book and do some homework as you head to your destination.

You may have to resort to sign language at times – crossed legs and an agonised face usually mean ‘I need a toilet’ anywhere in the world. But, without doubt it is helpful to have at hand a range of useful sentences to help you on your way.

I was quite proud of myself, feeling I had enunciated the difficult “h” sound almost perfectly, But, my driver (who was my very new husband) was livid.

It wasn’t quite an international incident, but it was a definite stand-off in the street.

Being in the food importing business, my husband travels often. However, he doesn’t eat pork and in some places, where it’s really prevalent on menus (such as China), and where the language is difficult to master, he resorts to drawing a pig with a big line through it. Clearly, verboten.

“You put us both in danger,” he growled. Happily – and in the spirit of Ramadan – the two men shook hands and we all went on our way.

These days travellers often have phones with translation applications to cover all bases, but it still pays to make an effort to communicate verbally.

Another faux pas was more embarrassing. I’d lived in Egypt for about six months and feeling quite confident with my new vocabulary, ventured out to buy some veggies at the local market.

Even if the locals reply in English to a query you thought was pitch perfect in their language, your attempt will be appreciated, even applauded, and can lead to interesting friendships…but not when you yell ‘donkey’ at a stranger!

Ski-wi warms to chill factor When friends announced they were heading to Japan for a January ski trip, CARMEN BIRD jumped at the chance to go too. Subsequently, she and her snow-loving family booked a three week holiday to the land of the rising sun, splitting their time between Tokyo and the ski resort of Niseko. Here she tells how it panned out.

Despite being more than a little dubious about leaving behind our New Zealand summer, the family was super excited about our upcoming adventure in Japan.

We left Auckland early on New year’s Day – mum, dad and the three kids – arriving in Tokyo during the early hours of the morning.

We decided to bus and walk to the hotel. The walking bit was meant to be 10 minutes but ended up a very long hour when we became hopelessly lost in a jungle of buildings in central Shinjuku.

After finally figuring out which way to head we found our hotel and, after a quick recharge, ventured out into the exciting madness of Tokyo.

That first day of glorious culture was an assault on the senses – so much to see and do and we had a big bucket list. Thankfully, the 16-yearold figured out the train station at Shinjuku – no easy feat as it seemed to go on and up forever with floors,

platforms and ticket booths but very few people who spoke English.

Although we had all endeavoured to learn a tiny bit of Japanese – ‘excuse me’, translating to ‘sumimasen’ in Japanese definitely ended up being our most used phrase – there were a lot of people to navigate and bumping was all part of the experience.

First stop was Harajuku, arguably the most creative and and vibrant area of Tokyo, famous for its Harajuku girls who dress in crazy colourful outfits with a fashion style all of their own.

The main thoroughfare is Takeashite St where all the action was. It was a constant flow of people, bumper to bumper. The shops were an eclectic mix of crazy Japansese fashion, 80’s look party clothes, soft toys and hair accessories, dotted with yummy dessert places; the latter so surprising as the Japanese people all seemed so tiny!

We spent a few hours exploring and among other places found a huge Nike store several storeys high plus a cat café where patrons paid to hang out with a room full of cats...a favourite stop for the kids.

shops, cafes, restaurants, temples and parks while the nights were devoted to trying all sorts of delicious Japanese food including sushi, noodles and yakatori (basically kebabs).

Across the road from Harakuju was the Meiji Jingu Shrine where we spent an hour or so wandering through a beautiful forest with ice sculptures lining the pathways of the 200-acre park – a beautiful, tranquil spot in the the middle of the city.

The Sky Tree was a highlight.

Around twice the height of Auckland’s Sky Tower, it soared 634m upwards and provided an insane view across the never-ending Tokyo sprawl. We enjoyed a drink at the top as we watched the sun go down.

We had heard the famous fish market was a ‘must see’ and though it didn’t sound appealing, we went along and were glad we did. It was just fascinating with so many weird and unusual sea creatures.

In particular, Memory Lane felt untouched by the rest of the Tokyo – a little bit of the old world in the heart of the city. It was such a quaint area of narrow lanes with tiny bars and restaurants where chefs cooked in full view of patrons; a must to see.

Outside, there was fresh sushi for sale while the markets sold all sorts of cute souvenirs, dishes and trinkets.

old. However, being from NZ and surrounded by beaches with bikini-loving ladies, we weren’t too concerned.

of powder (around 15m a season) and beautiful mountain runs with wide open bowls, plus Narnia -like forests, it is a skier’s dream.

It’s hard to put in to words the quirky, tacky, sparkly, loud, eccentric show we saw, and, yep, there were girls in bikin- like outfits, riding giant spiders and fighting fire-breathing dragons with swords.

It was a crazy hour and half but we enjoyed the madness and feel it was well worth the visit. What’s more the 12-year-old handled it with ease.

Arriving at our hotel the whole village was blanketed in snow with fluffy snowflakes falling and a brisk temperature of minus 12 degrees.

It was in a fantastic location, just a short walk of 100 m to the base of the mountain and a gondola to the Grand Hirafu ski slopes.

After a week immersed in Tokyo, we headed north to the island of Hokkaido, famous for its skiing and Sapporo beer. It was a 1.5 hour flight from Tokyo then a picturesque 2.5 hour bus ride to Niseko past freezing lakes and through gorgeous forests and countryside.

Niseko can be cloudy but on a clear day it’s possible to see the beautiful dormant volcano of Mt yote.

Most days our group skied and snowboarded on a range of runs to suit all ages and stages.

Mountain cafes served warm noodles for lunch and they were needed – most days it was well below zero. Add to that a bit of windchill and it was freezing but a few layers of clothing and we were totally comfortable – nothing like a bit of cold to refresh the mind and body and make one feel alive!

Night skiing was a highlight; it was quite spectacular skiing after the sun went down. The mountain was dotted with lights and although a little eerie, skiing between and around the trees was so much fun.

We had a few of days off the mountain, taking time to explore Niseko and further afield – an afternoon on snow mobiles blasting through forests and hurtling around tracks was a hit. We also stopped at the famous Milk Kobo café for the best cheese tarts and cream puffs I have ever tasted.

Skiing all day certainly worked up our appetites but fortunately, Niseko at night was a hive of activity offering yummy Japanese restaurants, sake, Niseko pizzas and cute little snow-covered food trucks at the bottom of town all designed to keep hungry visitors well fed.

We popped in a couple of times for daiquiris and whiskeys at Bar Gyu, or as it is known, “the fridge door bar”, a beautiful cosy bar tucked down a side street with the entrance literally through a fridge door.

Among other things Japan is famous for is its Onsens, traditional hot baths, usually outside in gorgeous settings. What a great way to soothe tired muscles after a day on the mountain.

Three weeks provided plenty of time to experience the hustle of Tokyo and the snowy paradise of Niseko – we wouldn’t have wanted less.

If skiing isn’t your thing there are so many other options. With its rivers, lakes and mountains Niseko offers much including snow shoeing, snow tubing, golf, rafting, kayaking, fishing, horse riding and biking.

But now we know there is so much more to see so a return trip beckons – maybe in springtime when the cherry trees are in blossom and the warmer weather offers fresh temptations! eastlife | march 2019 |

Jo goes toe to toe for charity Three years ago EastLife looked into the life of Howick mud runner, Jo Juddery and discovered a ‘Tough Mudder’ who didn’t mind getting down and dirty, literally. While Jo is still competing in the likes of Tough Guy and Gal, HELEN PERRY discovered this mother of two adult children has also been throwing punches with IT Heavy Hitters and is set to enter the ring for a third time in support of a worthy cause.

There’s nothing gentle about training for the IT Heavy Hitters corporate fight nights. Contenders pack ‘a real punch’ and both the training and the fights require physical and mental strength says three times competitor Jo Juddery.

“Some contenders find the going just too tough and never make it through training. But I like big goals and need big challenges – physically and mentally. Heavy Hitters provides both, challenging office bound bods to swap their desks for the boxing ring.”

Importantly, this modern day Amazon says every blow raises funds for a worthy cause – New Zealander of the Year, Mike King’s The Key to Life Charitable Trust which seeks to reduce suicide to zero in New Zealand.”

The fight may sound easy, but Jo knows, firsthand, the highs and lows of working toward such an event – “it’s not for

the faint hearted,” she maintains.

And, no one could call Jo fainthearted. She started mud running six years ago, has competed six times in Tough Mudders (here and in Australia), run Tough Guy and Gal about 20 times and has been chased by zombies in Run for Your Freak’n Life at Spookers in Karaka.

Mike (Dawes) asked me to create a special cake for Mike (King) showing the amount raised for Key to Life – I guess you could say it was the icing on the cake, (the amount shown then was $56,100.69) that convinced me to take the next step to being a contender!”

But with boxing she put on the gloves and shook off personal doubts about her ability to see a fight through.

Having decided to give the challenge a go Jo says she had no idea what she was in for.

“I not only enjoy the challenge of Heavy Hitters but when you see the outcomes – we raised $106,505.37 for Key to Life last year – there’s a feeling of immense satisfaction and pride.”

Started six years ago, IT Heavy Hitters came about after keen sportsman, Mike Dawes, (from the Wellington region) realised his family life was being jeopardised by a job which kept him pretty much glued to a computer screen.

“To cut a long story short, a job change followed by an invitation to take part in a charity boxing match set Mike on a new path,” Jo says.

“He was coached by Doug McLay during the build up to that match and

subsequently lost 25 kgs. After winning his bout he carried on training but when Doug took his own life Mike was devastated but also motivated to do something for charity himself. Key to Life seemed the right choice.”

By chance Jo became involved when she was invited to be part of a novel way to tell Mike King how much money had been raised for his trust via the 2016 IT Heavy Hitters event.

“I’d done a fair bit of cake making and decorating in my time so

“At one point I nearly quit. I remember sitting in the car crying.

I just didn’t think I could go on. The training was tough, very tough.

“Seeing that glove coming at your face for the first time is terrifying and getting over not wanting to hurt people isn’t as easy as you think.

“It took weeks for me to quell that fear and stop pulling back. When I finally landed that game-changing punch my coach said she saw it in my eyes. But, even then, stopping myself from apologising whenever I let go was hard. And, there were still plenty of times when I wanted to walk away but nothing comes from easy so I stuck with it.”

Sparring with both men and women, Jo adds that while everyone tends to pull their punches at training (but not always), when it comes to fight night there’s no holding back.

“I’ve come off with a black eye but no broken bones,” she laughs “I’ve also landed my fair share on heavy blows but it’s all about safety too.

Opponents have to be within 6kgs of each other; everyone wears headgear and a mouth guard. The women wear chest protectors and the men, groin protectors. If, at any point, the ref has the slightest concern the fight is stopped.”

Jo started training for the 2019 Auckland event (May 11) in February, rising early to do three

mornings with mixed martial arts exponent Shane ‘Sugar’ Young at City Kick Boxing before work then heading after work to the state-of-the-art, Combat Academy in Ellerslie to train three nights with owner and UFC star, Dan ‘Hangman’ Hooker.

“All contenders receive professional boxing training. For me, working with two internationals is really motivating but because that I’m also on the Heavy Hitters management team it helps me provide the right kind of support to new contenders – answer their questions; give encouragement – that’s because I know what it’s like to feel like walking out and not coming back. I’ve been there.”

Jo admits the challenge does lose people before they get to the ring and for some, getting through it means having an understanding employer who can “cut you a bit of slack during training.”

Jo herself works as a procurement administrator for Duncan NZ Ltd in Whitford and says the company has backed her competitive endeavours in every way.

“Management made sure I made it to the Kathmandu Coast to Coast 33km mountain run in February and the boss was there to meet me at the finish line. They [the company] do a lot for the wider community and are full of encouragement when there is a good cause at heart. I was scheduled to do the 50km Oxfam Trailwalker but with so much on my plate I’ve now gone from walker to supporter; Heavy Hitters is my main priority.”

Jo adds those who stick with the fight programme come out stronger physically and mentally, “especially those who have been office bound with no fitness routine.”

“For sure, they are thrilled by the amount we raise for Key to Life but they are equally amazed by their own achievement – you think you can’t and then you can.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Needed in their corner Jo Juddery has said nothing comes from easy and that includes organising the IT Heavy Hitters corporate fights which take place in Auckland and Wellington.

Raising funds for the Key to Life Charitable Trust, which aims for a zero suicide rate in New Zealand, the charity events (sanctioned by the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association and the NZ Boxing Federation) need sponsors, supporters and auction donors.

With that in mind Jo, herself a three-times contender, is asking companies and individuals not to ‘duck and dive’ but to be first to throw some monetary punches for such a worthwhile cause.

“We have a variety of sponsorship packages which can be discussed with management. For example we need sponsorship to help us fund coaches, medical staff, officials, venues and more.

“We are also seeking goods and services for the auctions which take place half way through the night and are hugely popular. In the past we’ve had incredible supporters who having donated some wonderful items so we’re hoping for the same again this year.”

To date, more than $315,000 has been donated by IT Heavy Hitters to Mike King’s Key to Life trust; this year it is hoped to do even better than last year’s $100,000 plus.

Trekkies’ ride on By road, the distance between Cape Reinga and Bluff is a little more than 2000 kilometres; the average horse walks at (approximately) 6.4km per hour. So how has Debbie MacWilliam managed to take almost 14 years to make such a journey?

JON RAWLINSON explains.

Sometimes it pays to take the scenic route. Every March since 2006, The Great New Zealand Trek has seen participants cycle, ride (on horseback) or walk one stage as part of a marathon mission. Since first putting foot to stirrup at Cape Reinga, Debbie MacWilliam, at last, has Bluff in her sights with the event’s final stage (from West Otago) set to run March 16-24.

“We’d covered more than 1000kms by the time we were through the King Country alone, so it’s been much, much further than that by now,” the former East Tamaki local says. “We’ve been well off the beaten track most of the time and able to see parts of New Zealand few others ever will.”

Exploring New Zealand from the back of her faithful mount, Woody, Debbie is one of just a handful who have been along for the ride every step of the way.

“I think there’s around 30 overall (including some 10 horse riders) who have completed every stage. By the time we finish, there will have been four horses – including my own – which have gone the full distance.

Right from the start, I aimed to complete the entire journey. Having come so far, I feel I have to finish it.”

Originally from central Auckland, Debbie was raised in East Tamaki and (for a time) attended Remuera’s Corran School. Today, she lives on a farm in North Waikato.

“My parents had a citrus orchard on Dawson Road,” she recalls. “We used to ride our horses all around those roads, near where the [Botany Town Centre] is today. The area’s changed a lot since then.”

The last section of the trek (unusually) involves only five days in the saddle, allowing an extra day to celebrate.

“Every year, there are a few who are unprepared, because you can’t really put quite so many hours in the saddle until you’re actually out there. But you can do day or weekend treks – they are good for training. It’s a very well organised event but you have to be prepared for all sorts of conditions.”

“There is a real family feel because some of us have been doing this together for so long. And, there’s definitely a social aspect; we always have a dress-up night and, on the last Saturday, a party and dance. It’s a lot of fun.”

However, the ultimate goal remains

the same: to raise funds to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Prior to commencement of the final stage, almost $400,000 had been raised as a result of this impressive initiative.

“It’s pretty amazing to be part of it because I don’t think most people realise just how many people are fighting [MS]. A couple of the farms we’ve ridden through had family members with MS and it was so sad but also so heart-warming at

the same time having them cheer us along,” she says.

“A lot of people want them to start the trek again – especially those who have joined in partway through – and go back to Cape Reinga. But, if they do, I don’t think I’ll continue; I think I’ll look to do some treks overseas instead. But, whatever happens, The [Great New Zealand Trek] Charitable Trust will keep going for a while yet.”

STARTING OUT AT CHILDCARE Finding a preschool for your child can be challenging. Here, Rockabye Early Learning Centre founder CARyN MAWKES discusses ways to help children settle into regular childcare.

Starting childcare is a big step, for children AND parents; these tips are designed to take the stress out of the journey ahead.

The most essential part is ensuring you and your child settle into childcare as calmly and happily as possible. The transition process can take time and it is normal for parents to feel as if they are on an emotional roller coaster. It is important to try and keep any negative emotion at bay in front of your child as he or she can easily pickup on such feelings which could make them apprehensive and anxious about childcare. three important steps to help settle your child into childcare:

plan: Prior to your child starting childcare arrange a visit to view the centre with your child. Many centres also encourage children to visit several times as this helps with the settling process. Visits are usually short and sweet to begin with then gradually increase to longer periods. They help you and your child connect with caregivers and are a perfect time to chat about your child’s individual routine and needs.

prepare: Before starting, talk to your child about this exciting new transition.

There are books in the library which may help put your child at ease.

Maisy goes to Preschool is one that could be helpful to read together.

Ensure you use positive language with your child and make this an

enjoyable experience. A positive experience for you and your child is to prepare a “special childcare bag”. This could include a comforting item from home to help him/her feel safe and secure. Many centres also encourage a family photo or a “Book about Me”. These help calm and reassure the child that teachers are familiar with the family.

Settle: Walk away! Don’t look back! As a parent it can be so tempting to drag out the farewell; to have one last cuddle or to pop back and sneak a peek to see how your child is settling in. It is so hard to do….I KNOW! It is helpful to your child to have a short, warm and loving goodbye but dragging it out just makes the separation longer and more painful.

Once in your car you can always make a quick phone call to the teacher if need be. Talk with the teachers about how your child is settling in and consciously model a friendly and relaxed relationship with your child’s teachers. Children trust those who you trust.

Once children gain a sense of belonging, they will start exploring the surroundings, engage in social activity and develop a passion for knowledge which sets them up for a life time of learning.

Remember, every childcare centre has its own philosophy on how to assist children through the settling process. Ask the teachers if there are any tricks and tips they recommend for settling your child into their new environment.

A handy snack for the whole family, these egg and dairy-free muffins are sweetened only with fruit. As they can be frozen (as well as eaten fresh from the oven) they make for a yum snack on the go. Blueberries – which are wellstocked with antioxidants – are a common favourite among children and the oats provide a healthy dose of carbohydrate which will help keep them feeling full for longer.

Place the flaxseed into a bowl and add 1/3 cup of water. Leave to sit for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 180ºC and line muffin tins.

Potato Frittata with Bresola and Castello Double Cream with Chilli

Fiesta Guacamole For more than 150 years, Tabasco has been the life of the party while dishing up the spices of life, as this dishy little recipe suggests.

Ingredients • 3 medium avocados, halved & pitted (approx 625 grams) • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 1 (57 ml) bottle Tabasco Green Sauce • 15 grams chopped, fresh cilantro • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped • 3 medium plum tomatoes, diced (approx 250 grams) • Salt, to taste

Method Scoop avocado pulp from shells into a mediumsized bowl and mash with a fork, leaving some chunks. Gently stir in fresh lime juice, Tabasco Green Sauce, cilantro, onion, garlic, tomatoes and salt.

Serve with tortilla chips and... enjoy!

Ingredients 6 eggs 1 onion 1 Tbsp oil 8 slices of bresola

Thinly slice the onions. Sauté the onions in oil for 3-4 minutes until they are clear.

Whisk the eggs slightly. Season to taste with salt, pepper and thyme then add to pan. Cook for a couple of minutes until the egg begins to set.

3 or 4 sprigs of thyme 100gm Castello Double Cream with Chilli Salt and pepper

Add slices of bresola and Castello Double Cream with Chilli. Bake at 180°C until firm, approximately 10 minutes.

Serve the frittata hot or warm and with a lovely green salad.

Replete with recipes (more than 120 in total), Mary’s latest book takes a no-nonsense approach allowing readers to quickly create 20 and 30 minute meals, including these two recipes. king prawn & broccoli Stir-Fry with black bean Sauce Serves 4 prep time: 10 minutes cook time: 8 minutes A lovely, quick dish for a midweek meal. If you can’t find oyster mushrooms, use chestnut mushrooms instead. Black bean sauce is fermented black or yellow soya beans.

• 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 2 large shallots, very thinly sliced • 2cm (3/4in) knob of fresh root ginger, peeled and thinly sliced (see note) • 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced • 350g (12oz) peeled raw king prawns, deveined (see note below and on page 113) • 250g (9oz) broccoli, broken into tiny florets • 150g (5oz) oyster mushrooms, thickly sliced • 6 tbsp black bean sauce • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce • Juice of 1/2 lemon Heat a large frying pan or wok until very hot. Add the oil, shallots, ginger and chilli and stir-fry over a high heat for 30 seconds. Push the vegetables to one side of the pan, season prawns with salt and pepper and add to centre of pan.

cook’S noteS • To peel a small knob of root ginger, which can be a bit tricky to handle, take a teaspoon and scrape away the skin – it will come off easily.

• Using raw prawns makes all the difference to this dish; if you use cooked prawns, they can become rubbery and lose their fl avour.

• Best made and served immediately. Not suitable for freezing.

Fry for about 2 minutes until starting to turn pink. Tip in the broccoli and mushrooms, toss together using two spatulas and fry for 2-3 minutes.

Mix the black bean sauce, soy sauce and lemon juice together in a bowl. Add to the pan and toss everything together well. Stir-fry for another 2 minutes until the prawns are cooked and the broccoli is just tender but still crunchy.

Serves 4-6 prep time: 20 minutes plus chilling A classic Italian dessert, this is still a favourite of mine. I’ve made individual puddings here (piccolo means ‘small’ in Italian), as they set more quickly, but you could make this in a large 1.2litre (2-pint) dish, if you prefer.

• 250g (9oz) full-fat mascarpone cheese • 300ml (10fl oz) double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 4 tbsp icing sugar, sifted • 125ml (4fl oz) strong coffee, cooled • 6 tbsp brandy • 12 sponge fingers (see note) • 50g (2oz) dark chocolate, coarsely grated you will need 4–6 small tumblers.

Break the remaining sponge fingers and soak in the coffee and brandy. Place on the cream layer, then spoon the remaining cream mixture on top, levelling neatly.

Measure the mascarpone and about 50ml (2fl oz) of the cream into a large bowl, whisking until smooth. Slowly add the remaining cream and whisk again into soft peaks, being careful not to over-mix or it will be too thick.

Fold in the vanilla extract and icing sugar.

Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, combine the coffee and brandy.

Break six of the sponge fingers in half and dip into the coffee and brandy mixture (see note).

Arrange the soaked sponge fingers in the base of the tumblers. Spoon half of the

• If you can’t fi nd sponge fi ngers, use trifl e sponges or slices of sponge cake instead, though they are less robust once dipped, so take care when assembling.

• Give the sponge fi ngers a really good dunking in the coffee and brandy. There’s plenty to go around and, ideally, you want them to absorb all the fl avour and add moisture to the dish.

Busy year starts with a smile!

It has been a busy start to the year for the team at Howick Village Denture Studio. As well as providing new smiles to the East Auckland community and beyond, team leader, Leah Taylor has been busy in her role as president of the New Zealand Institute of Dental Technologists (NZIDT) and with her volunteer work for the Smiles for the Pacific charity.

Leah, the senior clinician at Howick Village Denture Studio, has just arrived back from Dunedin where she attended and spoke at the Mihiwhakatau for all of the new dental students at Otago University. “It was a wonderful opportunity to share the knowledge gained throughout my career and to hopefully inspire students to work hard and aim high!” she says.

Taking leaf from past English bone china may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is certainly Wilma Weber’s especially when complemented by gleaming silver cutlery – HELEN PERRY went to see for herself.

Tea for two takes but a few minutes while high tea for 30 requires a bit more effort – and style – especially when the table calls for Royal Albert cups and saucers, a crystal sugar bowl, and silver teaspoons.

While modern day households may be short on delicate dinnerware and tiered cake plates, the shelves in Wilma’s Howick garage are stacked with appropriately labelled boxes containing the means to set up ‘tea’ for almost any occasion.

Wilma acknowledges there was a time when a rose patterned cup, saucer and plate was typically given to young women turning 21 and a gorgeous 48-piece china dinner service, complete with gravy boat, vegetable dishes and more, was often among the wedding gifts for young couples.

“But life has changed dramatically,” she says. “We live in a different era and, as a result, these treasures of yesteryear are no longer coveted by most of today’s contemporary-living, busy professional women. Instead, a great deal of old china is finding its way into ‘op’ shops.”

And, that’s from where the Northpark local has gleaned an eclectic assortment of china, which she hires out for the likes of weddings, anniversaries, themed parties, high teas, baby showers, garden parties, fundraisers and more.

“The idea for my business – The VinTEAge Tableware Co – started after I was asked to organise the reception for my brother-in-law’s wedding.

Initially, I considered plain white tableware then I began thinking how much nicer it would be if we could use gorgeous English china. I couldn’t afford to buy such a large quantity at retail prices so I began gathering pieces from second-hand stores and the like. On the big day the tables looked beautiful.”

While compliments came thick and fast, Wilma says it was still evident that no one wanted to polish silver tea pots in order to host afternoon tea parties.

Days to sell in Howick Ward for January were 61 – well up from the average of 40 days. The number of listings available in the area on realestate.co.nz is now sitting at 520. This is well up from the previous month’s 419. For most of 2018 there were around 400 to 450 at any given time.

For Auckland, overall, the median dropped to $800,000 from both the month before at $863,000, and last January’s $820,000 and even from January 2017’s $820,000. Sales numbers were consistent for a January at 1152 – January 2018, was 1185 and January 2017, 1147. The median days to sell, in Auckland, were up from previous years – 41 in 2017 and 45 in 2018, to 51 this January.

Nationally, the January median was $473,300, down slightly from December’s $480,000 but up from January’s 2017’s $399,000 and 2018’s $430,000 – a sign that some areas outside of Auckland are still holding up on price and performance.

Sales numbers for Howick Ward for January this year were 89. This compares to last year’s 117 for December, 163 in November, 159 in October and 162 in September.

Again, to get back to the old Eastern Beaches number, there were 27 sales in Flat Bush for January, so this equates to 62

Adding to this, Flat Bush as a suburb usually has a median around the $1.2 million so if we take Flat Bush out of the Howick Ward equation to come back to the old Eastern Beaches area we would, in all probability, have an Eastern Beaches median much lower than December’s $998,000.

The January median sale price for the Howick Ward was $932,900 (this must have been a hard-fought negotiation), which compares to last year’s $1,000,000 for December; $1,050,000 for November; $1,150,000 for October and, going back 12 months, $1,020,000 for January that year. That’s quite a clear indication the medium has slipped back somewhat.

Whilst this gives more localised information it does change the numbers. The Howick Ward is essentially the area which was Eastern Beaches however, it now includes Flat Bush. So, this month I will give a bit of information to demonstrate the change over from one area to another – easily done when it comes to sales volumes but not so easy for finding the median price – but, as you will see, we can get a bit of a picture as to what the market is doing.

THe future of tax Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, highlights the need for New Zealander’s to be aware of new tax proposals.

The long-awaiting report on capital gains tax has been released by the Government, see taxworkinggroup. govt.nz.

The report goes wider than capital gains tax proposals, including suggestions on environmental and other taxes, hence its title, Future of Tax. The extension of tax to assets and activities which were previously untaxed is the main interest.

Reactions to capital gains tax depend upon your political views – and the effect on your pocket.

A number of points are worth noting immediately.

The report was not unanimous.

Three of the eight members favoured an incremental approach to increasing the tax base and doubted the net benefits (fiscal, fairness and otherwise) of a capital gains tax.

The minority is made up of those with long and practical experience of tax advice (including high level policy work for the IRD itself).

Their views should not be lost in any consideration of a new tax.

(Note that they did not favour any weakening of the taxation of speculative housing transactions,

the main lead-in for a capital gains tax).

The majority noted that their report contained a range of options for the Government to consider.

The essence of their recommendations is a tax at the highest marginal tax rate (say 30%), not adjusted for inflation, on all gains and losses on land and improvements (excluding the family home), including share and business assets. Cars, boats and art are excluded. The tax would be triggered when the asset is sold.

What this means in practice is complex. The headline tax rate is very high when compared to other jurisdictions.

One way of assessing the complex proposals is to apply the measuring sticks of the Taxpayers Union, see eg www.taxpayers.org.nz/five_ rules to give you at least an idea of what the key issues in any new tax might be and how they compare with other countries.

Overall, the report is now subject to the political process. This means every New Zealander should take a very keen interest in the proposals and the implications for them personally. At some point you will be asked to vote on them.

To ‘oppose’ is... ‘to disagree with, actively resist and attempt to prevent. That’s why ‘governments’ everywhere are

circuses. Just watch TV! Political lives are based either on being an ‘accuser’ or ‘the accused’. That is why I’m a ‘centrist’.

I discover what each party offers.

Then...I decide what is good for New Zealand and for me and my loved ones. Many folks vote for THEIR party even if it puts up a three-eyed frog as the candidate.

So, don’t join the ‘them versus us’ fallacy. Change ‘get a second opinion’ to ‘get a third opinion’.

Stay in the ‘middle’ so you can ‘judge’ both sides wanting your support in anything and...ditch the ‘I’m right -you are wrong’ and ‘either-or’ mentality. You are too intelligent for that.

More than a third of the way down our Labourled government’s (first term) road and, although it’s been a ‘taxing time’ for Jacinda Ardern, she continues to: ‘do this’. Of course, the ‘this’ often varies, as these reports (based on releases from the PM’s office) attest.

If a child falls into a subterranean water receptacle, it could be argued that they are a well-being; used in another context, a definitive definition is a little harder to nail down. And yet, the PM continues to tout ‘wellbeing’ as a panacea for New Zealand’s ills.

“Government will deliver a worldleading wellbeing budget that will see us shift to a wider definition of success for our country, one that incorporates not just the health of our finances but also our natural resources, people, and communities,” Ms Ardern said recently.

“Investing in wellbeing is good for our economy. The wellbeing budget is not only about improving the livelihoods of New Zealanders, it is key to ensuring we are protected from the international headwinds the economy may face.

It will ensure that those closest to the margins are protected and that no one is left too far behind.”

With ‘wellbeing’ wide open to interpretation, one has to wonder whether all will be well that ends... wellbeing.

“The IMF [International Monetary Fund] and OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] have lowered their expectations for global growth as a result of trade wars and the slowing of the Chinese economy,” Ms Ardern confirmed recently, while outlining government plans to strengthen trade.

A renewed focus on vocational training could prove crucial to addressing skills’ shortages, Ms Ardern believes.

Pointing to research released in 2013, the PM has confirmed that approximately 80 percent of Maori freehold land is underutilised or unproductive; she intends to change this.

“In 2019 we will be doubling down on trade and broadening our trading base to protect our exporters and economy.

“Expanding free trade can provide a buffer against a downturn. In particular, we will seek to conclude a high quality agreement with the EU, as well as establishing the benchmark for a high quality model agreement with the UK.” While maintaining solid relationships with both sides www.eastlife.co.nz

It holds back growth and is a long term weakness in the local economy,” she says.

“The Government wants the vocational training system to be the backbone of our productive economy. Aside from more formal meetings and Waitangi Day celebrations, however, the Government had a wider role in festivities, giving a little back to hard working Kiwis enjoying a well-earned day off.

“I’m delighted the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund has distributed $288,000 to support 46 events across the country and encourage all New Zealanders to come together to experience those taking place in their communities,” the PM said.

Setting one’s sights on playing at the pinnacle of any sport is a ‘high goal’ indeed. And yet, thanks to Tiger Polo Academy, more young Kiwi polo players could be rubbing elbows with the sport’s royalty (both official and unofficial) in future.

“We have selected kids who have shown promise and dedication to the sport in order to help them reach their full potential as world-class players and give them the opportunity to make a living from polo,” academy coach and manager, Jonny Wade, says.

Along with a star-studded team, Jonny (a former high goal player himself) provides training sessions at Clevedonbased Auckland Polo Club and at Mystery Creek near Hamilton. In its first season, the academy is giving 11 school-aged children (two girls, nine boys) the ride of their lives.

“We have five coaches, including [New Zealand-born former professional] John Paul Clarkin, and his wife, Nina, who’s one of the world’s top female players. We also have a lot of other top players who come to assist,” the Clevedon local says.

Among the first expected to graduate from the academy are two youngsters (including Jonny’s eldest son, Ethan) from Auckland Polo Club.

“Once kids are selected all the coaching is covered, but [the academy] is not about giving anyone a free ride. They have to be dedicated and genuinely want to make a living from playing polo; it’s not about making the game cheap for them so they can go off later and become lawyers or pursue other careers,” Jonny explains.

“When they leave school, we have worldwide contacts to help them find their way professionally. They will improve even further then.”

The brainchild of another Clevedon local, Tiger Construction director, Lawrence Boucher, Tiger Polo Academy could well prove a ‘roaring’ success, serving as a vital next step in player development.

“Lawrence doesn’t play but he loves the sport,” Jonny says. “There’s been talk about how we can improve the quality of up-and-coming players in New Zealand so, last winter, he said ‘let’s do something about it,’ and we have.

“The better our best players perform, the more young people will want to become involved in the sport. At the same time, the likes of the Auckland Polo School teach the basics.”

Although it isn’t the cheapest sport – ponies are certainly more expensive than a pair of rugby boots – a king’s ransom isn’t necessary to participate, Jonny contends.

“It isn’t [cheap] but neither is rowing or even cricket, for example.

You can start at any age and anyone can learn to play but, to become a professional, you need to start riding as young as possible.

Fortunately, a lot of young New Zealanders have access to horses so it is quite accessible in that respect.

“The better horses you have, the quicker you’ll learn and the better you’ll play. Polo is actually 80-85 percent down to the horse; the best player in the world on the worst horse wouldn’t do too well!”

“Clevedon is like a Mecca when it comes to breeding polo ponies.

It’s well known for producing the best horses which are sourced by the world’s top players. We’re very lucky to have such an abundant choice right on our doorstep,” Jonny confirms. “You can get a really good bloodline inexpensively because the racing industry isn’t keen on smaller fillies which are often perfect for polo.”

“My dad was learning to ride and he started playing polo. Along with my twin brother, Adrian, I followed him into the sport,” he says. “When I was 17, I had the opportunity to play in England.

Both Adrian and I have made a living from polo.”

Thanks to the academy, the region could also build on a growing reputation for producing premier players.

During his playing career, Jonny competed at tournaments around the world, footing it with some of the best players involved in this ‘sport of kings’.

“The best New Zealand players are already respected worldwide and, all going well, we’ll produce even more talented sportspeople locally in the years ahead.”

The twins’ younger brother, Tristan, has also made a name for himself with mallet in hand.

“I played with and against Prince Charles – he’s a very accomplished rider. He encouraged us to treat him like any other player. [Princes] William and Harry have also played but not as competitively. There are also a lot of celebrities who play, from musicians to All Blacks.”

From his base in England, Jonny first visited New Zealand as part of an England touring squad approximately 25 years ago.

“I loved it. I came back the following year and, later I met Gaylene (my wife) who proved the best reason of all to keep coming back,” he laughs. “About five years ago, when Ethan (our eldest) turned 12, we decided to make New Zealand our fulltime base. That’s, more or less, when I stopped playing professionally.”

Gaylene – whose family hails from Orere – grew up around horses and also played more than just a few chukkas herself.

Despite setting down roots in Clevedon, Jonny still keeps a hand in the game.

“I still compete from time to time, but I’m no longer a professional player. These days, I’m mainly focused on training horses while also coaching and managing for the [Tiger Polo] academy.”

Open season, urban focus While the Land Rover NZ Polo Open (last held Feb 23) is undoubtedly the marquee event on the sport’s Kiwi calendar, another annual event is also proving a riveting (and ‘divoting’) experience.

Held in Christchurch as well as Auckland, Heineken Urban Polo seeks to present this rural sport to city dwellers in particular.

“Urban Polo is an exhibition event – three against three on a

smaller field – whereas the New Zealand Polo Open is a genuine polo tournament,” Tiger Polo Academy coach, Jonny Wade, explains.

“It’s probably too early to tell

but I’d like to see Urban Polo introduce more people to the sport.”
