Land-ing in hot water? Rumours that the Government is considering lending money to Auckland Council so it can purchase the occupied land at Ihumatao from Fletcher Residential have left me gasping. As EastLife went to print, the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern had not yet confirmed if such a move was being discussed and, none of the Government or council press releases I had received, confirmed this action was being taken.

SUITED FOR SUMMER: A swim at the beach usually calls for a full tide but in this instance, EastLife suggests a Moontide would be the best option when taking the plunge over summer. Beautiful styles from renowned New Zealand swimwear label, Moontide calls for difficult decisions – they all look wonderful which probably means water babies should have several in the bag. See more lovely options on page 30

However, I’m thinking reports by several reputable news agencies may be credible. So, on that basis I’ll join in on the hand-wringing. As I see it, protestors are unlawfully occupying land in a way which wouldn’t be tolerated in any other situation. That land was legitimately sold by its long-time owners to Fletchers for a housing development and the new owners are free to do with it as they will – like it or not, we must all adhere to the law of the land. Protestors may dislike the urbanisation plan – I too was saddened to learn this historic area was to be developed – nevertheless they have no place occupying it because they don’t like what is happening. In my mind, there is no way the

Such a move risks setting a dangerous precedent, which may encourage others to take similar action in defiance of the law. Will the Government be prepared to step in again… and again? A parallel could be drawn regarding protestors appealing to the Maori owners of Mt Albert to refrain from cutting down all the established trees in one fell swoop in order to plant natives. They are not protesting the replanting plan or even the cutting down of some handsome exotics; they are calling for felling and replanting to be done in stages so the mountain remains relatively covered as new plantings become established. Despite public opinion, I don’t see the Government piling into that stoush so, why is it considering doing so at Ihumatao? The Act Party stated that government’s only role at Ihumatao is: “to uphold property rights and the rule of law, not to legitimise unlawful behaviour and embolden people who break the law and occupy other people’s property.” I agree.

In addition, Fletcher’s housing project will be canned and on that my opinion is divided. It is disappointing that badly needed homes won’t eventuate, not on this site anyway, even though I’d like to see it retained as a reserve. But, that’s not the issue. The land was sold and its owner has the consents to develop housing; an illegal occupation threatens to undermine the legal rights of everyone in future. If Waikato-Tainui want to purchase the land, they are free to negotiate with Fletchers but the kind of intervention which may be brewing could exacerbate rather than calm the storm. Furthermore, if council does buy the land (which means you and me), perhaps the only ones laughing all the way to the bank will be Fletchers which I understand paid about $14million, but, to sell, want about $19million – a tidy profit for them.

Government should use taxpayer money to assist council to make such a purchase especially as it is unclear as to how the land will be used.

MARKING 30 YEARS Celebrations at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club were twice as nice when the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay marked the Christmas season and the 30th anniversary of the club’s chartering with a festive lunch. The guests of honour were Bill and Lorna Boyd. Bill was World President of Rotary International 2006/07 and is the only living New Zealander to have held that position. Of the 70+ members present, 31 have been active since the club’s charter and, of those, 22 are past presidents.

Howick Library manager, Stephanie McKenzie’s passion for the role libraries play in the community is long standing but it is one which is also shared by the other Howick Local Board Library teams whom she says are “wonderful ambassadors for today’s modern public library services.” Starting her career as a student shelver at Te Puke Library in the Bay of Plenty, she later became a library assistant at Glen Innes and Auckland Central libraries before working for Manukau Libraries (Manukau City and Papatoetoe). Prior to her Howick position, which she has held since 2013, Stephanie was manager at Mangere East and Pakuranga libraries. EastLife talked to her about teaching children to love reading and the place of books in a world dominated by I.T. You’ve been a librarian most of your working life, what changes have you seen in general reading habits over that time? The move towards e-reading has provided immediate access to written works via laptops and mobile devices, contributing to a downturn in the availability of printed, non-fiction titles. Graphic novels and manga have opened alternative avenues of reading choice.

What’s your favourite book? Several years ago, I came across the book A Man called Intrepid by William Stevenson. It is the true story of Sir William Stephenson who founded a spy network which helped break the Ultra Code and ultimately stalled the Nazi war machine. It is a fascinating read and the bravery of those spies remains with me today.

Are there more or less books coming onto the market and either way has there been an increase/ decrease amongst any particular genre?

How aware are parents of the need to encourage reading in their children and do they understand how influential reading from a young age can be in fostering language and vocabulary skills and information gathering?

Overall, fewer books are coming on to the market than in previous decades, although it is exciting to see new, small, specialist book stores opening which are offering great selections of children’s and teen literature. I am not seeing the proliferation of adventure or spy genre fiction, being released at present, although murder and erotic romance titles abound.

Champions of reading tend to be those who were encouraged to enjoy reading when they were children, although library initiatives such as our Dare to Explore programme, which runs over the summer holidays, has huge numbers of children signing up to participate. Sometimes it is the children who are teaching parents the value of reading.

Are books becoming more sophisticated in their style and content?

Because both parents in many households often work, how has this influenced their use of libraries and their encouragement of reading in the home?

This often varies according to the type of book. Much loved classics are being republished with up to date imagery but the content is still the same. Some of our New Zealand authors are tackling grittier subject content which provides robust discussion. It is common to see picture books that deal with quite adult themes in a simple way. What part (if any) did your local library play in you developing a love of reading? My love of reading came more from my maternal grandfather who would read anything and everything. The librarians at my small hometown library tended to censor my reading selections so my grandfather would often accompany me on library visits and have the books, that I wanted to read, issued on his own card. www.eastlife.co.nz

EastLifeDecember19.indd 11

Libraries are open longer hours now and provide on-line access to digital resources, homework help and reference books any time of the day and night, from a home computer or device. Many people still enjoy visiting our libraries to choose their books or participate in our community events. Are older children (Year 7-13) using the library regularly or do they tend to research/read online? School libraries are often the first point of call for curriculum-based information, although Auckland Libraries offer a tremendous variety of useful online student resources. Staff assist with National Library’s “Any Questions” service and “Many Answers” platform. Our librarians still do a lot of work helping

students to research properly, using authentic information sources, as the plethora of online information is very confusing. Is teenage reading reducing? On the whole, teenage reading is still strong with good demand for teen titles including graphic novels and manga. The only downturn we have observed is a move away from reading teen periodicals, to Instagram, Facebook or similar platforms to share the latest popular culture information. What impact have e-readers e.g kindles, had on libraries and, either way, is this changing with more people able to read books even on their phones? E-readers, kindles and other digital devices provide immediate, costfree reading options, with almost 34% of Auckland Library members using these resources. This portability appeals to travellers. There is still very strong demand for printed books, including titles that were first released quite some years ago. Has the role of Howick Library (and other libraries) changed over the past three or four decades – are they still about borrowing books and doing research or do patrons come to the library for other activities? Auckland Libraries have evolved over the past few decades to become vibrant community spaces. Book Clubs, Knitting in Public, Needlework groups, Cycle Clubs and Justices of the Peace are a few of the groups who regularly meet in our libraries. Free Wifi is well used, as are our public computers, printing and copying machines and study spaces. As we age, loss of sight is often a problem; what options are available to people who love reading but now find print is often too small? We offer an excellent selection of large print books, of all genres,

as well as a superb collection of audiobooks to assist anyone whose eyesight is fading. Staff happily provide reading descriptions to assist readers choose the titles they will enjoy. One tends to think of books as being the main item in a library but what other print matter (or otherwise) do you have available? We still have strong demand for DVDs and music CDs. Magazine selections, both printed and digital, are popular as is our Maori collection. Howick’s Mandarin books are extremely well used. We recently introduced Vox books to our libraries. These are picture books fitted with audio player that allow children to read along with the audio track. Work – and reading – aside what are your favourite pastimes? My husband and I share a home in Wattle Downs with our dog. We enjoy exploring the surrounding coastal walkways and the picturesque views across the inlet to Bottletop Bay and Shark Island and the magical sunsets over Manukau Heads. I also enjoy gardening and planning our next travel adventure. If you could be Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage for a day whats the first thing you would do? Celebrate the diversity of New Zealand’s 213 different ethnic groups who all contribute to New Zealand being a wonderful place to live. If you could ask any three people (living or dead) to dinner who would you ask and why? Michelle Obama whose leadership qualities and inspiration for other women is very empowering. Billy Connolly for his superb sense of humour. Sir Winston Churchill, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1953. His views on his written works would be fascinating, as would his oratory skills. eastlife | december 2019 |

‘KILLER’ DONUTS

gunning it!

Donuts with names such as The Innocent, the Shady, the Arrest and the Witness may well have a villainous ring to them but the founders of Deputy Donuts assured HELEN PERRY these luscious (and perfectly legal) treats are, perhaps, better, described as ‘wicked’ or even, ‘wickedly decadent’. Deputies Smith and Luca may sound like they have police connections but it seems their only ‘arrests’ to date are a captive audience who would steal their donut recipe if they could. And, while most chefs are reluctant to spill the beans when it comes to culinary secrets, Beachlands mumtrepreneurs, Becks (Rebecca) Luca and Kahla Smith are happy to tell the world their lip-smacking donuts are all about good, old fashioned whole foods. “No preservatives, no powders and no additives just yeast, flour, eggs and sugar,” Beck says. “They are made on the day we deliver and nothing is held over. We even make all our own fillings – jams, curds and creams.” Furthermore, if picking up a mixed selection on a Sunday from the Clevedon Farmers Market, it’s pretty easy to see why Deputy Donuts has lassoed a strong following – it takes some willpower to resist the Witness, a yeast donut filled with lemon curd and mascarpone mousse rolled in www.eastlife.co.nz

EastLifeDecember19.indd 15

vanilla sugar and topped with meringue, or the Parole, filled with spiced apple and fresh cream topped with brown butter and toasted almonds. And, any jury would surely convict a ring donut – boasting of peanut butter frosting, salted nuts and Whittakers peanut butter chocolate pieces – for being just too enticing! Delectable, though they may be, the journey to perfect this range – and keep adding to it – is as much about elbow grease as it is about licking the tasting spoon. The two sisters-in-law live close to each other and both are semi stay-at-home mums. Whilst still dabbling in their original careers – Kahla is a makeup artist and Becks a graphic and interior designer – the idea of working together on a business idea ‘just seemed logical” Becks says. “Because we both enjoy cooking we started thinking about something we could make that would be a bit different and fit our criteria of luscious but wholesome

too. We hit on the idea of donuts with that whole ‘are they the legal/ illegal?’ theme and it just went from there.” Devising a base recipe without using commercial mixes or any type of preservative was the first step, Kahla adds. “There was a fair bit of trial and error experimentation to come up with the first three varieties which we felt were just right. Then we had to go through certification route with Auckland Council to ensure the kitchen [in Beck’s home] met health and safety standards and achieved it’s A rating. After that it was all go.” Having started their journey back in July last year, ‘Deputies Smith and Luca’ have now fine-tuned their baking pattern and their market. “We bake Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and carrying over one day’s donuts to the next is a ‘no-no’,” Beck says. “We make the fillings separately and at the moment we’re comfortable fulfilling corporate orders (morning and

afternoon teas), selling at Clevedon [Farmers Market] and Pine Harbour in the summer and meeting private orders for parties and social functions.” “We will bake for special events on other days but require a minimum order of 20 donuts; we’re not looking to do cafes or restaurants – for the time being at least.” Of course, like anyone working closely with one particular food product these donut queens confess there are days when they don’t want to look at another donut – “but our husbands and kids, seldom suffer that affliction,” they agree. And, neither do their regulars! These law-abiding cooks sells approximately 300 donuts every weekend at the market and now make more than seven varieties. “People are certainly starting to discover us and the best thing is hearing praise such as ‘so delicious’ ‘absolutely yummy’ and ‘I have to have another one! I guess we would say, business is sweet!” eastlife | december 2019 |

Taylor Shrimpton – how to save a life When a family of three was thrown into rough seas off the Port Waikato Bar earlier this year, members of the Sunset Beach Surf Lifesaving Club were among those to risk their lives to save others. Surf lifesaving may be a sport in its own right but it’s not all about fun and games. “The sport side has definitely kept up my interest in it but the emergency services part is also massively important to me,” says club secretary, Taylor Shrimpton. “We definitely work like one big team when we need to because lives really are on the line.” It may be a case of all hands on deck when it comes to the ‘real thing’ but during surf lifesaving competitions, the gloves are off. “The sport is a reward for the work that goes into patrolling and running the club. It provides great training too, keeping us fit and ready for when we’re needed. We use the skills we gain from competing in rescues all the time,” the former Sancta Maria College student says. Surf lifesaving also features surf sports (encompassing such disciplines as beach sprints, swimming and ski and board events) but Taylor tends to focus on the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) events: mass rescue, tube rescue and team races.

www.eastlife.co.nz

EastLifeDecember19.indd 19

“In a way, IRB is a motorsport so some think it’s just for petrol heads but that’s only one aspect of it. There’s much more to it and the athletes are often heavily involved volunteering as lifeguards or in other roles with surf clubs.” As the summer progresses, Taylor and her teammate, Jemima Ferrier, will have their eyes competitions including: Northern Region IRB Championship (January) and the NZ IRB Champs (April). “At this year’s regionals, my team scored all golds and, as a club, we’ve won overall for the seventh year in a row, so I guess you could say we have been dominating.” Following the New Zealand season, Taylor will be focused on more distant horizons with the Australian Surf Life Saving Champs in July and the biennial Lifesaving World Championships in Italy next September. “Aussie Nationals are top level, depending on where the Worlds are held. Lots of Aussie teams turned up last time [Adelaide, 2018], but when competitions are held in Europe, for example, not all the best competitors from this side of the globe will go so the level of competition isn’t quite so high. “I’m pretty confident we’ll do well at Worlds. The last World Champs was the first time we had a New

Zealand IRB team compete for 13 years or something like that. We won the overall trophy as well as four golds and three silvers so we were pretty happy about that!” Since first diving into the sport aged 15, this former East Auckland local has become rather familiar with gold, claiming a total of 16 gold medals at national and international competitions. “I became involved with surf lifesaving because of the social aspect; it was just something fun to do down at the beach,” she recalls. “My aunty Jacqui became a qualified lifeguard and she got my mum [Jan Shrimpton] involved.” Jan and Jacqui are still involved in the sport, as are a number of Taylor’s siblings and cousins. Earlier this year, Sunset Beach was named Club of the Year (for the second year running), along with a slew of other awards. Such laurels play an important part in ensuring the wheels (so to speak) on the club’s boats continue to turn, Taylor contends. “In order to compete or provide emergency services, we rely on sponsorship. Awards are great for showing sponsors how committed we are so we can have what is needed to do what we do best.” It appears sponsorship is being

A ‘nice save’ might be useful in many sports but, for at least one multi-goldwinning athlete, such a term carries a much deeper meaning, as JON RAWLINSON explains.

put to good use. Literally drawing on her expertise as an engineer by trade, Taylor is practically ‘tailor-made’ to pitch in with the substantial renovations underway at the club’s Port Waikato home. “Thanks to a population increase – with developments such as those at Pokeno – we are getting more and more visitors to our beach over summer so we want to make sure we’re up to the task of keeping them safe,” she explains. “The improvements will allow us to have more room to store equipment and be better able to train more members so we can expand our patrols.” The renovations should be fully completed by Labour Weekend next year. But, no matter how beneficial they may prove, there is no substitute for pragmatic advice to those who might find themselves out of their depth. “It’s pretty simple,” Taylor adds. “When you head to the beach this summer, listen to the lifeguards and always make sure to swim between the flags.”

KARAKA LIFEST YLE VILL AGE

First residents full of praise Luxurious new retirement village – Karaka Lifestyle Estate at Drury – is expecting its first residents in December and the next group in February. A third block is due for completion in May 2020. Enjoying a lovely waterside location with a beautiful old-world Country Club overlooking the swimming pool and green fields beyond, the new village is all about character, luxury and individuality. EastLife magazine asked some of the estate’s new residents what attracted them to the village – here is what they had to say:

ROBERT AND CHRIS HOWLET T We had been vaguely looking at retirement places for down the track but as [Chris] is still working it wasn’t something we intended to concentrate on just now. However, we read about the village and it sounded like us so we decided to take a look at what was in the pipeline. Once here, we just signed up without a second thought. The whole social environment appealed and the pool was another aspect which won us over – it’s beautiful and there’s going to be an indoor heated pool and spa too! We could also see there would be no worries about home security if we went away on holiday; there’d always be someone to feed the cat! For us, it was important, too, that any absence would be noticed. It’s nice to think someone would ask after us or check the unit if we weren’t seen for a day or two when we should have been. Of course, with the variety of upcoming amenities such as a theatre, restaurant, gym, library, billiards room and bowling green not to mention beauty and hairdressing services, we have no regrets at leaving behind our Mangere family home of 34 years.

EastLifeDecember19.indd 20

BARRY AND BRENDA GERARD We’re Karaka residents and presently live just a stone’s throw from the new village. When we saw it advertised in SOUTH magazine we came straight down and fell in love with the estate. It was so well placed – close to the motorway (and our friends) but overlooking green fields with gorgeous walkways all around – a really beautiful spot. On visiting, we were made exceptionally welcome; nothing was too much trouble. Of course, the pool and the stunning clubhouse easily won us over as did planned facilities and socialising opportunities. However, we especially loved the spacious villas and that they were all different – not like many regimented retirement village units; more like an attractive subdivision with individual styles and materials. We’ve purchased a three-bedroom villa which also means we’re not going into a pokey unit from a large house. What’s more we no longer have two and a half acres of lawns to cut, either! Now, there’ll be time for other interests. www.eastlife.co.nz

28/11/2019 5:11:58 PM

COLLEEN (AND DENIS) CURRIE We knew that at some stage we would need to move from our Pukekohe home to something smaller or to a retirement village environment. We had looked at a couple of different places but they weren’t what we wanted. On reading about Karaka Lifestyle Village, we came to look and liked what we saw…a lot. In fact, we were so taken with the clubhouse, and the location, that we decided to make the move sooner rather than later – we didn’t want to miss out. As a result we’ve sold out home and will move into our three bedroom villa early next year. Like others, we were attracted by the various design options, colours and materials. The street isn’t a row of look-alike houses, it just feels like a normal street but with all the advantages of security, recreational facilities and many luxuries, all at our fingertips.

GUS AND KATHY SMITH We’ve lived in Drury for the past 17 years and had been thinking about retirement village living among other options. We had read about Karaka Lifestyle Estate but missed the open day. Still keen to see what was on offer we made an appointment to view and from the first we were impressed. Importantly, we wanted to stay in the area and this was close to our present home – the proximity of the village to Drury was a big attraction. We liked the idea of being handy to old friends whilst having the additional ‘bonus’ of making new friends. On-site socialising benefits and facilities cannot be faulted. Most importantly, we were impressed by the capital gains incentive which meant there wouldn’t be a major loss of equity should the time come to sell. Ultimately it didn’t take us long to decide on a three bedroom villa with double garage close to the clubhouse. Now we are just looking forward to moving in.

We welcome your visit at Karaka Lifestyle Estate Retirement Village Come along to experience our beautiful Country Club, view plans of our village, and learn more about Karaka Lifestyle Estate. Karaka Lifestyle Estate is a new independentliving retirement village in Drury. The first units will be ready for occupation this December. Karaka Lifestyle Estate features spacious homes, friendly community atmosphere and the management support you would expect of a topquality retirement village but it comes with a key difference, at Karaka Lifestyle Estate you get the capital gain from the sale of your unit.

Our new village is in a lovely waterside location with a beautiful old-world Country Club. We pride ourselves on providing a supportive, warm and welcoming environment for our residents. Karaka Lifestyle Estate could be for you if retaining your wealth is important to you, and you are looking for: - Safe and secure retirement living - A strong and lively social network - The hassles of home maintenance taken care of - A supportive environment, with an onsite manager

Cruise ship crazy? I am not a good sailor – my Paihia hole in the rock journey ended with me heaving my heart out under a stairwell, my Barrier Reef adventure saw me (and me alone) left on a resort island for several hours while husband and the rest of the passengers carried on out to the reef for a fab’ day of snorkelling, and we just won’t mention the Cook Strait crossing. But those experiences have never dimmed my ardent desire to cruise – ideally on the biggest and most stable ship available! Many of my friends enjoy cruising, some for a couple of weeks at a time, one or two for three months at a time! “You pussy cat,” they say.

“You’ll be fine; these ships are wonderful; do The Med!” I was finally persuaded to take the plunge and I’m hoping to share the experience with readers when we eventually return. But, first, I’ll let you in on how this landlubber is about to turn sea(wo)man! Last year I was treated to lunch on board the Celebrity Solstice when it was in port in Auckland – fabulous. It certainly started me thinking, ‘I want to do this, I can do this!’ So, when man about the house began bringing home travel brochures on land tours of the Amalfi Coast and Croatia, he also suggested the Greek Islands – by ship!

When the lure of the Mediterranean finally prompted SOUTH editor HELEN PERRY into saying ‘yes’ to a cruise she knew planning had to start early. A year out from her 2020 trip, one of the last two verandah cabins on board the CELEBRITY EDGE was secured and the deposit paid. Now, the journey begins!

“Mmm, okay, let’s look,” I agreed. The Celebrity Edge, launched just last year seemed to be perfect, offering a 10-day return cruise from Rome, taking in Sicily, Santorini, Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Naples. It took me less that 30 seconds to say, ‘let’s do it!” In no time we were booked with a verandah cabin (mid-ship, portside for good views) on a cruise liner with the kind of facilities I know I’ll love – great dining, pool, theatre, spa and more.

So with our itinerary in place it’s time to start thinking what to wear, places to visit and fitness – I guess we’ll be walking a fair bit on land. With two boutique coach trips also in the mix, there’s plenty to think about but, for now, I’m just dreaming of living large on the high seas. Like the song says… bought my tickets, heading for fun and counting down the days because I’m cruise ship crazy! P.S I’ll keep readers posted.

KIDS’ READS

Running out of gift ideas for kiddies is not an option when wonderful children’s books are available in abundance. Here, EastLife highlights five new delightful titles to enhance Christmas stockings.

BLONG THE CAT’S COSTUME CAPER

When Karen McMillan adopted a starving kitten from Vanuatu, little did she realise that her new-found feline friend would come to mean so much to so many. “I like Blong the Cat because he is cute like our cat Ziggy, but Ziggy only has three legs and Blong has four legs and beautiful big green eyes,” says Coco, a young fan of Karen’s books.

is the star. In Blong the Cat’s Costume Caper, this popular puss must find the ‘purfect’ outfit to wear to a wedding.

A familiar character to readers of the popular Elastic Island Adventures series, Blong has a new book where he

PEPPA’S CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY There are few children’s books as widely known as those featuring the antics of Peppa Pig. In this board book, Peppa is preparing for the festive season but, when last year’s Christmas jumper won’t fit, Daddy Pig must step in and come up with a solution. THE TOP SECRET INTERDIMENSIONAL NOTES OF BUTTONS MCGINTY

Unfortunately, his taste in clothes is not quite the cat’s whiskers. Will he find the right costume and become a sharpdressed cat? There’s only one way to find out!

STINK-O-SAURUS SAVES CHRISTMAS

So what’s up with Buttons? Well, since his iconic Kiwi comedian creator (former Edgewater College student, Rhys Darby) first introduced readers to this character, Buttons McGinty has been busy travelling through space and time in search of his parents. Part action-packed comedy, part sci-fi adventure, book two promises to engage young readers and deliver more than a few belly laughs along the way.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, holly hanging from our doors – such aromas might be synonymous with this time of year but, unless Stan can save the day, a ‘stink’ Christmas is practically guaranteed! The latest addition to a series about a dinosaur with a nose for adventure, this book (which also includes a read-along CD) sees Stan heading to the North Pole to help Santa overcome a few logistical problems with innovative (yet odorous) solutions.

THE DINKY DONKEY ‘I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey...’. Since those words were uttered in 2009, it’s likely the majority of parents have ‘hee haw’ on the brain. A phenomenon, The Wonky Donkey captured the imaginations of children worldwide. Ten years on, Craig Smith & Katz Cowley are back with a muchanticipated follow-up, featuring Dinky, the wonky donkey’s ‘blinky pinky winky-tinky funky dinky donkey daughter. Tis the season Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner CARYN MAWKES has some helpful tips to make the festive season a homemade affair.

At Operatunity, music is our common language. With over 60,000 attendees across New Zealand, you may know us for our daytime concerts. But the hidden gem? Our boutique travel company providing luxury musical tours for seniors. Join those in the know and discover the ‘Operatunity Difference’ today.

There’s nothing quite like watching the joy on children’s faces when Christmas comes around. It’s a time for sharing, giving, gathering with family and friends so why not make it a handmade affair? Here are some suggestions to get started.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTS – Make decorating the Christmas tree a family affair by encouraging children to create their own decorations. Here are some child-friendly and practical decorating ideas.

• Hand make Christmas wrapping paper using your child’s art work • Use cut out shapes of your hands to form a shape of a wreath or Christmas tree • Create your own snow globe using an old jar and a special laminated family photo

BAKING – Everybody enjoys receiving yummy Christmas treats. Here are some easy recipe ideas.

• Christmas shortbread • Bliss balls • Strawberry Santas

GIVING – This time of year is perfect for teaching children about the spirit of giving. Whether it’s thanking the postman, baking for a neighbour or generally giving in some way, it is the little warm fuzzies that mean a lot. • Make salt dough decorations for the Christmas tree • Cookie mixture in a jar (all the ingredients and a recipe in one) • Homemade decorations • Create your own calendar with personalised photos

• Set a budget. It seems basic, but it’s often overlooked. Factor in presents, special food, entertainment, travel, holidays etc, along with your normal everyday payments. If there is a deficit, you need to think of ways to make cutbacks.

Thank you for all your support in 2019. h o m e s f o r t h o s e w h o a p p r e c i at e I want to wish you w w w.Merry litehouse. nz all a very Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a safe and relaxing summer.

Whether it’s gifts, food, parties, Secret Santa or holidays, it’s a cash-intensive time. However, many people head into Christmas ilders H u B ou ter s as without any clear idea of what they GOLD will spend let alone what they can AWARD afford to spend. 2016 e Year f th eo

New Zealanders spend about $6 billion during December in the lead-up to Christmas. That’s a whole lot of coin going out the door – I guess there’s a reason they call it the silly season!

quality

• Make a list of everyone you need to buy for and put a dollar limit next to each. Take the list with you when you shop and try to stick to it. My clients go into Christmas knowing exactly what they’ve budgeted for the season which cuts out a lot of the stress! • Trademe is your friend. Getting rid of stuff which no longer fits or you don’t use could give you a nice cash injection pre-Christmas. You might even pick up some bargains for your own gifts.

My office will be closed from Friday 20 December and will reopen on Monday 6 January.

• Agree on a family present plan, for example buying only for kids or doing a Secret Santa. You’ll find pretty much everyone is relieved to have boundaries! • A potluck Christmas is the way forward! Bringing a plate shares the load and everyone is happy they’re contributing. Ensuring you don’t start the year on the backfoot is important; the next step is developing a strategy to get ahead in 2020! ENDURING POWERS OF ATTORNEY SAVES GRIEF Wynyard Wood senior solicitor NARINA BALI WATSON talks about the importance of appointing an Enduring Power of Attorney. As Christmas approaches, estate planning may be a topic on your mind. Let’s start with a story. Scott and Priya (not their real names) were a young couple, recently married and expecting their first child. Scott was a construction worker, and Priya, a school teacher. They were building their first home. One day Scott was working on a high rise building and had an accident resulting in brain injury. His injury caused a loss of mental capacity. When Priya returned home from the hospital, she remembered Scott hadn’t arranged to pay the builder’s construction invoices for their home. Without payment, their builder would stop work. The payments were being made from Scott’s account. Priya contacted her lawyer who said she must apply to the court to access Scott’s account. This took a considerable amount of time. Priya was exhausted and stressed with the lengthy court process. Her lawyer also said she needed to report to the court at various times regarding the account. This added

to Priya’s stress and cost. This entire court process could have been avoided if Scott and Priya had discussed Enduring Powers of Attorney (“EPA”). Scott could have appointed Priya as his attorney allowing her to access the account should Scott lose his mental capacity by accident or illness. People think about “what will happen if I am no longer alive” and prepare their will. However, “what happens if I cannot make my own decisions” is a thought which rarely crosses our minds. Mental capacity is often linked to dementia and associated with our older population. However, our younger population is just as much at risk of having its decisionmaking ability affected.

THE TUMULTUOUS DECADE! BILL POTTER – Personal Power Coach. Thought Leader. Global Speaker. Bill has already made personal presentations in 57 countries... so far. www.speakers.co.nz/our-speakers/all-speakers/bill-potter/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM PART 3 – We are on the edge of possibly the most amazing Decade in the history of our planet Earth. Our World. Apparently... we are on the precipice of certain extinction, in a timeframe ranging from eight to 12 years... as verbalised by at least two highly-publicised, opinionated commentators. There are raging arguments for and against ‘people-made’ climate change. As usual, we so-called ‘superior’ human species default to what we do best... yell and scream at each other. Listening, researching, qualifying, discussing and sharing... are cancelled and so, the war is on!

Make a bit of time in your schedule to think about questions such as, “who will make decisions on my behalf if I lose mental capacity?”, “who can my attorney consult with when making decisions on my behalf?”

We also enjoy ranting, passing on blame and pointing fingers. It’s a popular Human ‘game’. It is based on the ‘holier-than-thou’ perception – nobody is better than anybody else. We are all ‘in this together’. I mention this, because it is becoming a forgotten reality.

Contact Narina Bali Watson for more information on how you can formalise the answers to your questions.

Little ones are scared, because they think the world will end, even if it means that they won’t have to make their beds, do their

homework or wash the dishes, for much longer. Instead, let us do some ‘critical thinking’ (a ‘lost art’)... and make some intelligent decisions and conversation. Let us launch this special Decade 2020-2030 with a vision for our own future. Let it be filled with positivity, planning, shared journeys, personal involvement, preparation, good research and a strong, practical hope for our continued global journey. WIN! A CHILDREN’S BOOK PACK Throughout 2019, EastLife has outlined some of our team’s favourite new (and recent) release children’s books. With so many delightful yarns spun for young ones, it can be difficult for parents to choose stories from the shelves so, thanks to some of New Zealand’s top publishers, we have a ‘lucky dip’ selection of children’s books to give away to one lucky reader.

WIN! PARADICE ICE SKATING FAMILY PASSES Taking little ones anywhere can see parents on thin ice at times. Thankfully, Paradice can ensure children have an opportunity to entertain themselves while adults (most likely, for a little while... perhaps!) find some time to chill out too. For a full rundown of what’s on offer, visit paradice.co.nz. Meantime, we have THREE ice skating family passes for Paradice Botany (each covers two adults and two children, or one adult and three children – children aged 12 and under) up for grabs.

WIN! SILBERHORN PET CALM The summer holiday period may be a time to celebrate but it can be rather stressful too. And, with so much going on – including long car trips, staying away from home or parties – it can be particularly stressful for pets. Thankfully, Pet Calm offers a mixture of natural, non-narcotic herbs formulated to help pets relax and go with the flow. Thanks to our friends at Silberhorn, we have bottles of Pet Calm (each includes 100 capsules) to give away to FOUR lucky readers.

plunge In a country surrounded by ocean, the water is a playground few overlook when temperatures rise and leisure days call for a goodly dose of sunshine, relaxation, bare arms, and a splash in the sea.

That’s when women look to the New Zealand Swimwear Company for favourite brands such as Moontide, Piha and Quayside. This year’s Moontide collection combines fit and comfort with contemporary design for every woman. Form-enhancing new shapes, teamed with design, bring body-confidence to the latest looks. At the heart of the range lies a constant vision to provide beach confidence for each and every woman. Look for beautiful rich tones from the world around ranging from the deep earthy feel of brick and forest to brighter and lighter corals and maple leaf gold. Tropical florals are here to stay – Balinese batik or over sized foliage, these blooms are overtly feminine. Featuring flattering wrapping and tying with bagged out bows and knots to beautifully adorn shoulders, waistbands and necklines, there’s plenty to please including vintage shapes, high-waisted pants and bralettes for the sexy siren look.

TO THERMOGRAM OR NOT TO THERMOGRAM – WHAT IS IT ANYWAY? CLIVE PLUCKNETT, Naturopath, Doctorate in Natural Medicine, Bachelor Holistic Health Science, AdvDip: Naturopathy, Nutrition, Western Herbal Medicine, PG Dip: Cancer Nutrition Medicine, Mental Health Nutrition, AntiAgeing Medicine, Science, MBA(Dist), BA. I love this country. We lead the world in so many things. We are now a world leader in women’s breast cancer. Our health system has responded by throwing more and more dollars at chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. I believe that all three have a place, but I do not believe they are the only solutions. I think a question which no one seems to be asking is why is this beautiful country becoming a world leader in so many cancers? And, why are we not detecting them earlier? Think about that for a moment. If your house regularly floods from a leaking roof, would you throw more and more dollars at flood damage, or would you look at why the roof is leaking? What’s more, would you check periodically to make sure the integrity of your roof was sound? There are many factors that give rise to cancer. You may wish to visit our website to see how many of these feature in your life. The next thing you may wish to do is to implement an early detection programme. In my view this should consist of a combination of physical examination, mammograms, and thermograms.

I appreciate that it could be considered sacrilege for a naturopath to support mammograms because of the cumulative radiation and the pressure on the breast that could cause metastasis. Yet, I believe they do have a place. Likewise, thermograms have a place. Please visit our website to find out how they work, how easy and unobtrusive they are, their proven effectiveness, their FDA approvals and the supporting studies. Thermograms are not just about breast cancer; they will detect unusual heat sources throughout the body, which are early warning signs of ‘dis-ease’. If you are considering a thermogram, our staff are certified clinical thermographic technicians, through the International Academy of Clinical Thermography. We conduct the thermograms and send them to Dr William Amuli, from the USA, for analysis. We looked for the best in the world and this is he. There is so much more to know. Please visit our website and read the extended version of this article. Help New Zealand lose its world breast cancer title.

BAD BUGS ON YOUR

toothbrush! YVONNE VANNOORT, from Sanctuary Dental, Bishop Dunn Place, Botany talks about toothbrush hygiene.

Did you know that bugs cling to your tooth brush bristles? If you look at them under a microscope you would be surprised... they sit there just waiting to go back into your mouth the next time you brush. The bad bugs we are talking about like to live in an environment which is dark, moist, warm and has a low oxygen environment. So, knowing this you can change the environment between each brushing to prevent putting back bad bugs back into your mouth. There are simple things you can do to help, such as having two tooth brushes to use; alternate these each day so the one you are not using dries out well between brushings. Put them into the sunshine on a window sill in your bathroom to

allow the sunlight to kill the bad bugs – ultraviolet light is a natural disinfectant. If you don’t have a sunny window sill you can use hydrogen peroxide which can be bought at the pharmacy. Use the 3% concentration and soak the brush head in this solution. This is also a powerful disinfectant which will kill the bad bugs easily as it provides a very low oxygen environment. Rinse the brush after soaking the head overnight then it’s ready to use again. Remember to also change your tooth brushes every few months at least, or when the bristles become splayed. A new brush obviously carries fewer bugs and is more effective when the bristles are straight. Happy brushing!

DON’T BE DAUNTED BY

new dentures

The idea of getting dentures can be a little intimidating at first, but it’s important to remember that with the right solutions, and with the right team beside you, dentures can transform life for the better.

Eating tips

FO R YO UR DE NT UR ES

Understanding the process of getting replacement teeth – from denture impressions to construction – can help make the process seem a little less overwhelming and prepare you for the steps ahead. Here is what to expect from your denture procedure:

IMPRESSIONS Your clinician will take a preliminary impression of your mouth as a guide for making your new dentures. If you need to have some teeth extracted, a denture impression is done after your gums have healed (4-6 weeks). Impressions have improved a lot over the years; they are quick and painless!

SELECTING YOUR NEW TEETH With the help of your clinician, you can select which tooth shapes and colours (shades of white) you want for your replacement teeth. The objective is to make them look as real and natural as possible.

THE TRY-IN This is perhaps one of the most exciting appointments, as your clinician will insert wax duplicate dentures which allow you to see what your new dentures will look like before they are completed. This also allows your clinician to check that all technical requirements have been met and to make any alterations needed before the final insertion appointment.

INITIAL FITTING Once the dentures are made, you will be scheduled for an appointment at your denture clinic for an initial fitting. The dentures will be placed in your mouth and your clinician will make any necessary adjustments to ensure they are a good and comfortable fit. After the initial fitting, you will probably need some additional appointments for fine adjustments to eliminate any sore spots.

GETTING USED TO YOUR NEW DENTURES Dentures can feel unnatural at first and will take a while to get used to, particularly for first-time denture wearers. It is common to experience things such as: • Soreness • Irritation • A full-mouth sensation • Increased saliva • Gag reflexes However, with patience and advice from your clinician, your new dentures will soon feel natural, and you will be back to speaking clearly and eating normally.

• Choose foods which are easy to chew and swallow such as eggs, fish, cheese, chopped meat, cooked vegetables or ice cream. • Take small bites and chew slowly. • Don’t bite down hard with your front teeth. Try to balance food evenly in your mouth when you chew, so your dentures remain securely in place. • Hot foods will take some time to get used to, as your mouth won’t be able to sense heat as it did before. • Avoid chewy or hard foods, such as caramel or chewing gum.

AFTER CARE

Tips

Keeping your dentures clean and in good shape is very important to protect the investment you have made. You should soak and brush your dentures daily but DO NOT use regular toothpaste. Your clinician can recommend the best cleaners and denture products to help keep your dentures bright, shiny and as new.

• Practice speaking out loud while wearing your new dentures. • Read from a book or magazine in front of a mirror or a loved one. • Try biting down and swallowing just before you speak. This helps set your full/partial denture in place.

If you can spare 45 minutes once every one or two years then why not visit us with a friend and take advantage of our 2 for 1 eye exam offer.

Kiwis are going blind because the diseases which rob them of their sight are not being detected early enough to prevent blindness. In fact, in New Zealand it is estimated that 20% of those registered blind, have become so from preventable causes.

Simply mention this offer when you book your appointment for you and a friend or a family member and you will pay for only one exam!

Poor eye sight doesn’t just mean difficulty performing day to day tasks but can also mean loss of independence, increased risk of falls and other accidents and is also associated with depression.

Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces

For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding” she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient.

returned to NZ I was referred to Ugie at Niche Denture Centre by my sister-in-law and now I can smile confidently. In Mae Salvador fact I feel like smiling all the time. Thank you Ugie for my beautiful smile.”

• Stock syrup – 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar boiled, then chilled) To serve: • 1/2 cup Chantilly cream – 1/2 cup cream whipped with 1/2 tbsp icing sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract until soft peaks form • 1 pack freeze dried orange chips • Fresh mint/flowers garnish

METHOD To make the kiwifruit cream, blend or juice the kiwifruit and pour into a bowl. Whisk whipped cream, mascarpone and icing sugar together, add kiwifruit juice and store in the fridge to keep the green colour until ready to spread on roulade later. Next, make the golden chutney.

Juice or blend the kiwifruit and pour into a pot with vinegar and castor sugar. Bring to the boil then add to blender with raisins. Blend into a fine puree and set aside for use later.

transfer set pavlova sheet over for easier rolling. Spread the kiwifruit cream all over and roll the pavlova like a swiss roll. Set roulade in the freezer for 2-3 hours before slicing so it doesn’t fall to pieces.

To make the pavlova roulade, pre heat oven to 180c fan bake. Line a shallow baking tin with baking paper. Whisk egg whites until peaks start to form. Add half the castor sugar and continue to beat until mixture becomes shiny and glossy. Add cornflour and vinegar and fold gently, be careful not to lose too much of the volume. Spread mixture evenly onto prepared baking tin around 2cm thick and place into pre-heated oven and bake for 15 minutes. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes.

To make the mint soup, bring a pot of water to the boil. Add mint leaves and blanch for five seconds – refresh straight into ice water and pat dry once cooled. Add kiwifruit, mint and 1/2 cup of stock syrup to a blender. Blend slowly adding more stock syrup until mixture forms a thin soup-like consistency. Chill until use.

Sieve a little icing sugar onto another piece of baking paper and

To serve pour the kiwifruit and mint soup into a shallow bowl. Slice the pavlova roulade and place into in the bowl. Serve with Chantilly cream, drops of the golden chutney, freeze dried orange crisps, fresh mint and flowers to garnish. www.eastlife.co.nz

GROW YOUNGER WITH GREAT FOOD When hitting the golden years more than a few people would like to turn back the clock and regain some of their youth. Perhaps that’s not as far-fetched as it sounds. Well-known holistic nutritionist, Jessica Giljam-Brown and Dr Catherine Stone, award-winning cosmetic doctor and founder of The Face Place MedSpa, have brought together principles of great health in their new book, Grow Younger with Great Food.

Much more than a cookbook, Grow Younger with Great Food is a compelling resource for people who want to learn how to live and eat for optimum health. It covers topics on hormones, sleep, mood, energy, libido and digestion as well as offering practical tips, advice and more than 90 recipes designed to preserve and improve health. This month EastLife features this delicious recipe for Summer Tart taken from the book.

SUMMER TART Quinoa makes a nutty and flavourful crust for this tart. We have chosen to fill the crust with pesto and roast tomatoes, but you could fill it with anything you like. The fibre and protein-rich quinoa turns a simple tart into a filling and enjoyable meal. We like that this showstopper of a dish comes together with some very simple ingredients and little time. SERVES 8 PREP TIME 25 MINUTES COOKING TIME 30–40 MINUTES Quinoa crust • 1 cup dried quinoa • 1 1/2 cups water (or a homemade broth if you have been industrious) • 2 Tbsp ground flax meal • 1 tsp Himalayan salt • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 2-6 tsp water • Olive oil for greasing the tin Roasted tomatoes • 15 cherry tomatoes • 2 large heirloom tomatoes • 6 medium tomatoes cut into half or large chunks • 5 sprigs of thyme • Himalayan salt and pepper • 1 Tbsp olive oil Filling • 1 cup classic pesto • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced • 2 handfuls of rocket • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar Place quinoa and water (or broth) in a pot, bring to a boil then simmer with lid on until the quinoa absorbs all the liquid. Once cooked, fluff with a fork and replace the lid on the pot to trap the steam. Preheat oven to 200ºC. Once the quinoa has cooled down www.eastlife.co.nz

EastLifeDecember19.indd 41

enough to touch, mix through the ground flax meal, salt and herbs and beaten egg. Mix until a dough forms, add water one teaspoon at a time until the mixture forms a loose dough. You will usually need 2–6 teaspoons of water, depending on how much water is left in the cooked quinoa. Press the quinoa into a greased 30cm tart tin. Press evenly over the base and up the sides of the tin. Wet your fingertips so that the quinoa doesn’t stick to your hands as you press it in the tin. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden. Remove from oven and leave in tin to cool. While the base is cooking, place the tomatoes in a baking dish with the thyme, and salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 30–40 minutes, or until skins blister and juices start to leak out. Spoon the pesto into the cooled but still warm tart crust and smooth over the base. Carefully spoon the roast tomatoes into the tart crust, arranging evenly. Discard the thyme or use to garnish. Very finely slice the red onion into long rounds and mix with the rocket leaves. Heap the rocket and onion mini salad in a pile on top of the tart. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar over the whole tart.

Design DIRECTIONS

In line with the physical health and wellness revolution there is a real focus on wellbeing and escapism within current interior design trends reports JULIE REES from Sojo Design. She says it’s all about surrounding yourself with the things you love. When it comes to personal interiors there are no hard and fast rules but rather a gentle emphasis on introducing to the home, items which bring joy. It could be the addition of luxurious velvet cushions to a sofa, or gorgeous, buttery linen on a bed.

your style, colour is making a comeback and it’s here to stay.

The question is, ‘what does luxury mean to you?’ For me, it’s as simple as lighting a candle and curling up on my favourite chair to read a design magazine.

Botanics are huge. The indoor plant craze hasn’t diminished and is reflected in soft furnishings. Great foliage print textiles abound especially in varying shades of green, mixed in with soft blush tones. Coral (blush’s more vibrant cousin) is the 2019 Pantone Colour of the Year and it, too can be found across the design board.

Curves and oval forms are huge, with hard lines and sharp edges currently taking a back seat. This is largely led by the current trend for all things ‘organic’. We are seeing a lot of natural textures with marble vein, woodgrains and thick weaves leading the way in the search for authenticity, naturalness and realness within our busy day-today lives.

Being surrounded by the ocean, with an overall lifestyle drawing us towards nature, means shades of blue will always be a favourite in New Zealand. Kiwis love blue and it is showing up a lot in interiors although mainly as an accent. Bright and fun, it makes

Where these textiles and products are made is proving important to consumers. ‘Handcrafted’ and ‘repurposed’ are buzz-words, with sustainable fashion top of mind. People want to know where their items are being made and under what conditions, rather

for restful cushions and accessories. than purchasing mass produced knock-offs. More and more companies are using upcycled and pre-loved elements as the basis for their designs. So, with imperfect beauty and naturalness as a base, luxury is being introduced with soft, warm gold undertones found as an accent amongst accessories and the finishing of furniture. Bringing a little bit of glam to any space, this rich hue completes those demands which swing between a desire for light, cool and restful and a need for a sense of rich, warm comfort.

Today’s decorating trends are diverse and exciting. As a nation we want to embrace everything from cosy and refined elegance to luxe and dramatic or even bohofeel bare timbers, whitewash and natural fibres.

Wallpaper remains popular as a key point of difference and is a great way to add texture to a room without adding ‘stuff’.

You don’t need a huge yard or a tonne of fancy equipment to start indulging your green thumb. Container gardening is a simple, beginner-friendly way to grow your own fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers at home, in even the tiniest of outdoor spaces. The beauty of using containers to create an at-home garden is how accessible it is. Potted plants are an especially good solution for people with little or no ground space available, such as those living in apartment complexes with only a small balcony to work with. People with limited physical abilities can also benefit, as raised flowerbeds or pots on tables

make gardening possible for the wheelchair-bound and people with mobility issues. Of course, there is a huge selection of garden plants suited to containers. Vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, onions and peas thrive in larger pots, while a variety of herbs can be successfully grown in even the tiniest containers.

It’s a great way to keep a fresh supply of kitchen staples such as parsley, basil, rosemary and thyme on hand at all times. For a more decorative container garden, annuals are your best bet, as they provide colourful blooms all summer long. Popular choices for potted flowers include begonias, marigolds, petunias, patio roses and zinnias although there are many more to choose from.

GET CREATIVE WITH POTS! There’s no need to outlay a lot of cash buying expensive pots for plants. If the budget is limited think beyond buying traditional pots and take a look in your cupboards, the garden shed or the laundry – old household items can be recycled into unique looking planters.

the perfect hanging planter with the help of some paint and a small chain. Old kettles, tea pots and even tea cups can make novel planters as do paint tins – ask the kiddies to decorate them in their own special ways. Do you still have a metal watering can stashed away? Why not give it a flowery retirement at the end of its useful life or you could do the same thing with a wheelbarrow or a toolbox — the possibilities are endless.

Perhaps you have an old pair of rain boots collecting dust; why not give them new life by planting colourful flowers in them. If you prefer the vintage look, worn out construction boots will give a nostalgic touch to your arrangement or recycle baby shoes by planting them with tiny flowers or herbs – very cute!

Just let your imagination run wild. You’re sure to find all sorts of potential flower pots just by wandering around your home. Recycling has never been such fun and your friends will admire your ingenuity!

With parliament set to take a break during its summer holidays, our Prime Minister was as busy as an elf in Santa’s workshop ‘doing this’ while it was still possible for the doing to be done, as these insights based on Ministerial reports suggest.

COP-IN, COP OUT? The ranks of the New Zealand Police may not have swelled by 1800 (overall) but more than 1800 new recruits have been added as promised, the PM has confirmed. “Frontline officers are at the heart of every neighbourhood, rural district, small town and big urban centre... The Government has well and truly turned around the decline in numbers of frontline police who help keep our communities safe,” Ms Ardern said at a Royal NZ Police College graduation ceremony late last month. “The Government will deliver the largest growth in police numbers ever recorded in a single year, outside of major restructuring, since the Police force was established in 1886.” Since October 2017, 1825 new cops have now joined the force but the PM did not confirm (in her official release) the exact net (as opposed to gross) gain during this period.

KIDS – GLOVES OFF, SLEEVES UP For some little ones, every day is children’s day. However, for the PM, World Children’s Day (Nov 20) was a time to focus on improving the lives of many others who are less fortunate. “One of our toughest long-term challenges is to tackle child poverty,” Ms Ardern said. “I’m proud that we’ve made a good start on our plan to ensure families can give kids the best possible start at life.”

Since taking office, the Government has launched a range of initiatives, setting a target to halve child poverty within 10 years. “The Families Package and Wellbeing Budget means we’re on track to lift 50,000 to 74,000 children out of poverty by putting more money in the pockets of parents and our wider plan eases the pressure on families across health, education and housing,” Ms Ardern said.

FREE? CHINA? The best things in life may be free, even if the vast majority of the citizens involved may not have the freedom to enjoy them. Despite this, our democraticallyelected Prime Minister was delighted to recently confirm an upgrade to a free trade agreement with the world’s largest dictatorship. “Our upgraded free trade agreement will remain the best that China has with any country,” Ms Ardern said during the East Asia Summit in the Thailand. “It reflects the importance both countries place on our relationship and builds on the significant mutual benefits both countries have enjoyed.” The upgrades – negotiated with a representative of China’s ‘president for life’ – expect to reduce the cost of exports and include a commitment to ‘promote environment protection’. “By January 2024, New Zealand will have the best access to China for dairy products of any country,” the PM added. “[And], Protections in the existing agreement that are important to New Zealanders such as rules on overseas investment and the Treaty of Waitangi exception remain secure.”

OF THE ‘NEWS’ – PM OF PNG VISITS PM OF NZ In anticipation of the November visit by counterpart from Papua New Guinea the PM said: “[We] have a warm and friendly relationship. I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister [James] Marape and continuing the conversations we started at our first meeting at the Pacific Island forum.” www.eastlife.co.nz
