At True Vets Ormiston, we understand the importance of good dental health in our importance of good dental health in our pets and therefore August is Dental month pets and therefore August is Dental month at our practice where we offer free dental at our practice where we offer free dental checkups and discounted routine dentals. In this column DR ADRI ROSSOUW ‘brushes DR ADRI ROSSOUW ‘brushes up’ our knowledge of dental disease in cats up’ our knowledge of dental disease in cats and dogs and explore ways to take better care of their teeth. take better care of their teeth.

Did you know that an adult dog has 42 teeth, and an adult cat has 30?
That is a lot of teeth to take care of! We all know the importance of brushing, flossing, and gargling daily to keep our own pearly whites sparkling. It is just as important to take good care of our pet’s teeth. If we don’t, they will get tartar buildup which can lead to painful gingivitis, tooth root infections and smelly breaths. Bacteria in the mouth can also enter the bloodstream and cause secondary infections! If we don’t take good care of their teeth, they could end up losing them . . . and the pet tooth fairy does not pay out for rotten teeth!
So how do we take good care of our pet’s teeth?
Brushing is still the most effective way to remove plaque. Most dogs will tolerate brushing if you start them at a young age. Cats tend to be a little trickier but it’s worth a try! You can add a small amount of pet tooth paste for that minty, fresh smell but even without it, brushing will still have the most significant impact. The good news for those that
important to take good care of own a ‘toothbrush attacker’ or a ‘locked jaw and head flicker’ is that there are numerous other options available. Dental chews and treats are very effective at removing plaque. However, it is important to buy good quality chews! Another option is to mix dental food in with your pets’ regular food. We can also add oral rinses and dental prebiotics to their drinking water. Your pet will still need a dental scale and polish from time to time. Despite our best efforts, we cannot remove all plaque and over time tartar will start to accumulate. By booking your pet in for a routine dental ‘before’ there is any evidence of dental disease, you will avoid smelly ‘kisses’, painful teeth and most likely have something extra in the bank to buy those dental treats with!

DR DELSEY is the founder of InstinctualParent.com an online community of parents looking to better their relationships with their children. She shares three basic things that she checks off when her kids are having a meltdown.

JH17454-v3
Some meltdowns feel endless. The books you read, courses you attended or podcasts you heard are NOT helping you or your child.
I’ve been there, it feels never ending and sometimes you want to join them and burst into tears yourself.
When this happens, I do the basics to help them, and after that…well, read on to know…
#1 Environment check.
When the environment is overstimulating, I gently pick my kids up, move them somewhere different and that helps their regulation process. I then connect using words, hugs, presence to help them.
#2 Access my child’s tears.
Underneath anger and frustration, there’s sadness, grief, tears. To move past the ‘aggression’, you need to access those tears. This takes work! And works when you’ve practiced emotional safety and protected their vulnerability.
#3 Access tears when connected.
If #2 doesn’t work during a tantrum, I wait until my kid is regulated. I use role play to access the vulnerability, identify their sadness, get curious about their struggles. I show them safety in their sadness and tears so that they can access that part of them next time they are feeling angry.
Now, if all fails, and there’s no getting through in that moment. I remind myself of this: • I’m focusing too much on my child and not on me. I pause, breathe, allow myself space, I
‘ok’ my tears. • I remember I’m a mother and not a martyr. My child is having a hard time and so am I. • Time passes, and with it, so will this experience. • The ‘perfect’ Instagram family
I saw today is a snippet of a bigger moment…parenting isn’t that majority of the time.
With these reminders I give myself a hug, I gently rock myself, I baby myself, love myself…and with that I’m again able to understand my kid.
There is no shame, no guilt…just reality. If this resonates with you…if you’re on the same page as I, then join me and hundreds of other local parents where we can be guided and fill our cups and go easy on ourselves through this journey.
