New Year welcome After the usual busy Christmas it’s a joy to relax and take a few days off before the new working year begins in earnest. Here’s hoping readers celebrated the arrival of 2019 in style and that the New Year brings health and happiness although I’m sure a little wealth wouldn’t go astray, either.

STICKING OUR NECK OUT Okay, so although East Auckland is the best place in the world, we are a little short on exotic wildlife out our way. Fortunately, East can meet West thanks to our good friends at Auckland Zoo. With ‘Zoo Lates’ starting soon (from Feb 9), we have double passes to this wonderful attraction (as well as a number of other tempting prizes) up for grabs.

The holiday break means I can spend precious time with my grandsons – a few days in Wellington and also a family outing to the musical Aladdin – there’s nothing like day out with music and merriment at its heart.

Of course, some folk will be busy making New Year resolutions and mine is to make a point of thanking people and organisations when they give me pleasure.

For example, I love the VTNZ Mad Max-inspired advertisements. Not for everyone, but I’d like to tell VTNZ that they make me smile every time – so, well done!

When dining out and feeling replete, I also intend to commend the kitchen. A ‘thank-you chef’ is often called for but not delivered.

Recently, a spur of the moment handbag purchase had me beaming. Though keen to replace my very shabby bag I’d seen nothing suitable until I wandered into a suburban shop and spotted three I liked. A most obliging young woman gave every assistance, provided honest advice and disposed of my old bag after I had transferred ‘the kitchen sink’ from one accessory to the other. A thank-you well deserved.

I hope those who have come through some tough cancer treatments will find our Q&A with PINC physiotherapist, Cath Novento, an encouragement; see faces from our community at various local events and check out food, fashion and beauty products.

Discover where a passion for art has taken one former Pakuranga resident, Elise Smith, and a similar bent could also take one talented high school student in the future.

I can think of many occasions when I have failed to express pleasure particularly when a little effort on my part has been required. So, this year I’m determined to drop a line or make a phone call if accolades are deserved. I know how much I appreciate a thank-you or compliment from time to time; I’m sure others do too.

There’s a stunning photographic display from the recent New Zealand Flower and Garden Show and a wild west cattle drive is sure to muster interest. With a bit of luck you, too will be on a break and can just sit back and enjoy!

ROTARY DRIVES GOLF FUNDRAISER The spirit of giving was to the fore last month when 36 teams of golfers turned out at Pakuranga Golf Club for the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay’s annual charity golf tournament. More than $8000 was raised for Life Education and other local community projects. WITH PINC AND STEEL PHYSIOTHERAPIST

With cancer research and treatments improving all the time, survival rates are on the rise which is great news. However, this also means many cancer survivors are living with the after effects of treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While once there were few options but to live with those effects, now there are choices. In particular, Pinc and Steel provides physiotherapy-led rehabilitation for people who have had cancer. We talked to Pinc physiotherapist CATH NOVENTA, from Howick about the organisation and what its programmes can mean to ‘survivors’.

what exactly is Pinc and Steel, where did it start and when?

Pinc and Steel was created by a New Zealand physiotherapist, Lou James. She recognised the need for cancer rehab but also had the vision to see that she wouldn’t be able to treat all the patients herself.

In 2006 she set up the Pinc and Steel Trust to help fund treatments and she also set up training courses for other physiotherapists in New Zealand and around the world. Lou has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to people with cancer. why the name Pinc and Steel?

Initially set up as Pink Pilates the name was changed when Lou realised it was so much more than Pilates and then included a programme for men as well.

P – Physiotherapists that deliver the programmes I – Individual prescribed sessions N – Nurturing to reclaim quality of life C – Cancer rehabilitation what is your role with the organisation in new zealand/ auckland and how did you become involved?

I am a trained Pinc physiotherapist.

I began specialising in working with cancer patients in 2001 after training in the treatment of lymphedema. I found more and more woman coming to the clinic with issues post cancer surgery.

are there a number of branches or community groups? if so is there one in the wider howick area?

Pinc and Steel has physiotherapists all over New Zealand. There are three in the Howick area.

safety considerations regarding weather and tide. There are eight hour-long sessions over four to five weeks. The last session is a short trip on the boards which is a real achievement. where is it held and how often?

Eastlife understands there are a variety of rehabilitative programmes. if so, what is the general thrust of such programmes and how do they differ?

Our model of care is to start with one-to-one sessions with a physiotherapist working on individual needs and goals.

Patients can start treatment at any time, even before cancer treatments start. We can work on post-op scar tissue and strengthening during follow-on treatments such as chemotherapy and can help patients manage fatigue, a common side effect.

Once treatments are finished, we encourage patients to join group exercise classes so they are supported in their return to activity not just by a physio but by other cancer sufferers. Next Steps is an exercise class consisting of yoga, Pilates, and step aerobics over 10 weekly sessions while PaddleOn teaches stand up paddle boarding. one of the programmes operating locally is paddle boarding, correct? what does this involve?

Patients are taught how to stand up on a paddle board and are taught proper paddle techniques and

PaddleOn is weather dependent.

Our next block course is in February at either Bucklands Beach or Eastern Beach. Attendance is twice a week for one hour. how does one qualify to be part of the programme and is there an age restriction or cost?

PaddleOn is significantly subsidised by the Pinc and Steel Trust. The cost for 8 sessions is $40 which is more like the cost of one private session. There is no age restriction. Patients need to have finished their treatment and have the physical fitness to complete the course. Those who haven’t been seeing a Pinc and Steel physio need to attend a free screening test to make sure they are fit enough.

This ensures everyone is safe on the water. People living with metastatic disease can take part if well enough but may require medical clearance.

how does paddle-boarding help?

Paddleboarding works on core strength, balance, and aerobic fitness which are all important for rehabilitation. It is also very calming and enjoyable to be out on the water and this is just as therapeutic in some cases as the exercise. The sense of achievement when mastered is fantastic! Lastly, groups tend to create informal support groups adding another layer to the rehabilitation. have outcomes been pleasing/ encouraging?

There have been fantastic outcomes from both Next Steps and Paddle On in small trial groups and we are now starting to monitor outcome measures pre and post rehabilitation to produce more data to support our programmes.

Two of the most interesting outcomes, in my view, are increased relaxation and improved social participation. Cancer is obviously very stressful and can be socially isolating for many reasons.

I find it wonderful that an exercise programme can help with both of these issues. how is Pinc and Steel funded?

what is the general reaction when paddle boarding is prescribed as a ‘treatment’? is it for men and women?

The most common reaction is “I couldn’t do that”. But everyone ends up surprising themselves. It is open to both men and women.

In New Zealand there is no public funding for cancer rehabilitation.

We can currently fund cancer rehab in the following ways: • Through medical insurance.

• Low income patients can apply to the Pinc and Steel Trust for funding.

• Friend, relatives, and workmates can gift sessions via the Pinc and Steel website. This is a really practical way to support someone going through cancer.

• Patients can pay privately if able.

Does it rely on volunteers and if so is there a strong local/auckland contingent?

The Trust has very dedicated volunteers who help with administration and the regular fundraising events. The physiotherapists are all paid health professionals but many also give up lots of their time to fundraise and do extra activities with patients. if you could be minister of health for a day what would be the first thing you would do?

Best question yet! I would make sure there was equity and access to health care irrespective of where one lives or what the condition/ illness is. It might take more than a day to organise! if you could ask any three people to dinner (living or dead) who would they be and why?

Robyn Williams because he was one of the funniest people I have ever seen and yet he was so complex and sad underneath. My mum. I lost her three years ago to cancer and I’d love one more dinner. George Clooney for obvious reasons but mainly for mum to talk to, of course!

Time to reboot?

Is technology usage biting into your quality relationship time with family and friends? Jes Magill looks at healthier ways people can connect.

Most people agree: technology, especially smart phones and devices are fantastic when used for good in our personal, social and business worlds.

Misuse or overuse though can lead to unhealthy consequences, and possibly addiction, with technology dependency striking down the mental health of entire families and communities too.

Claire Thompson a Howick-based a counsellor for more than 10 years, assists clients with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, addiction, parenting and family crises, through to resolving workplace stress and conflict.

Rather than working with what some might think are the same old issues, Claire says her work’s not like that at all, because society is always changing.

“New things are always happening, which brings different impacts and challenges which people need to work through,” she says. “In 2008, it was the global financial crisis and all the flow on effects from that. Job security vanished and employment issues made a big impact on relationships and families.”

Fast forward to 2018 and it seems the nation has come down with what looks like a global pandemic – technology addiction.

expressions intent; the users totally absorbed and oblivious to the world around them.

“Gaming disorder is another serious issue that’s not getting the attention it needs,” says Claire.

“It’s a classified mental health addiction but there are very few private addiction counsellors and no treatment facilities for it.”

There are constant reports in the media on the dangers of technology over use, especially for children.

Pauline Whetton in the NZ Herald said recently, “We should limit our use of technology to what is essential, and we shouldn’t be addicting our young to what’s described as “’technological heroin.’”

Claire has seen tech addiction have dramatic and negative impacts on many clients, especially couples.

“Uncontrolled use of technology in family life can mean there’s often very little communication.

Sometimes entire families are on their devices at the same time. They’re not talking or sharing what’s going on; people are isolated, even in their own homes.”

But Claire’s starting to see some changes: “More people are reclaiming power in their lives and parents are remembering they do have the ability to take control of issues that affect their family.”

One heartening story is that of Kiwi mum, Sarah Rameka who developed an app which takes control of the negative aspects of IT. Technology Time sees kids earn their screen time by doing chores and other activities around the home.

Concern over her 10-year-old son’s screen addiction (sneaking his device into his room to play games at night and waking at 5am to continue) made her realise she needed to gain control.

Her son’s previously obsessive, all hours usage has been scaled back to manageable chunks between after-school time and just before dinner.

“Parents are feeling much more in control and less guilty about the time their children spend on devices because it’s being monitored,” Sarah says.

And Claire’s happy to report she’s seeing more individuals and couples bring their device usage under control.

“People are agreeing to restrict device use by banning them during dinner, having device-free time in the evenings and saying no to phones in the bedroom.

Controlling I.T. use for happier homes: • Encourage more face-toface communication – have meals together, discuss highs and lows; plan fun, healthy activities minus technology • Swap unhealthy activities for healthy ones – think of new activities you’d like to take up or pick up again • Turn the goal of less device time into a game – place all phones etc, in one place and make a pact to leave them there for, say, two hours • Have a competition – see who can do without their device the longest; the winner gets a prize • Tie the competition in with household tasks – the first one to give in cooks dinner or does the dishes

“It’s always fantastic to see people functioning in healthier ways and turning the quality of their relationships around.”

How one Howick family navigates the

challenges of gaming Gamer Girl, aged 19 I was two years old when I first played games on Dad’s PlayStation 1. Then we moved on to PS2 and I remember playing Ratchet & Clank. At about 13 my interest in gaming increased.

I now prefer role-playing games and Shooter. With the PS3 sky rocketing my social life with online gamers, I found new games to play. I migrated to the PC for a bit and now I’m living it up with a full steam library for my PC and PS4.

Gamer Girl, 15 years I was introduced to gaming at a very young age as my Dad is a gamer. It was a new world I could escape into and have fun! I began on PlayStation 1 with Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. When I went to primary school I found games based on Disney princesses and Bratz. I have spent too much time gaming; once my thumbs were really swollen after a campaign. I’ve learnt to take breaks and focus on what’s important like school and THEN spend my spare time submerging myself into the place where time has no concept… Until Mum starts bickering on about the dishes!

Has gaming caused issues with family/friends/school?

Not really. If anything it’s brought me closer as we all play the games together and discuss them. Gaming helps distract me from school. I’d been focusing on it [school] to the point where it was unhealthy but gaming helped balance it out.

What’s the appeal of gaming?

It’s a nice escape from reality.

Some days I don’t want to be a university student but a badass Spartan warrior, a robotic dinosaur machine destroyer, or an Overlord.

Do you game too much?

In the past I’d rather game online with my friends than go hang out with them, or have to rush assignments because I wanted to grind more for loot boxes in Overwatch.

Is gaming at a young age unhealthy?

I don’t think so but the amount of gaming time kids have should be limited. Kids these days are on devices for too long and play games instead of talking to their friends. The types of games kids play depends on the parents. If parents think their child is mature enough to play a certain game, that’s their choice. In my opinion it depends on the child’s maturity.

These days: I’ve moved on to First Person Shooters. It’s fascinating creating new strategies, completing objectives or winning a team death match.

I’ve made many friends through gaming but guys are still shocked by a “gamer girl.”

I’m pretty sure they just never talk to other girls very much!

Sharing gaming wisdom: Gaming is fun but you have to take breaks and socialise with friends in person too. Don’t stay on your device 24/7 and remember to focus on life’s more important things before pressing play on your controller.

Only when friends argue over what is better: Xbox, PlayStation or PC.

Younger kids shouldn’t play inappropriate games. They should stick to the correct age rating; there are games ratings for a reason.

Take breaks during sessions to de-stress and relax, even though it disrupts your flow. Try and hang out with your friends so you have actual, physical social connections; to give you the chance to live a little or go to university to get a life and have no time for gaming.

These days: I love to play when I have free

Gamer Girls’ Mum: I’m an armchair gamer. I prefer being in the room watching their game, while I play games for one of my iPad. The girls call it “the bottom of the food chain” but they love it that I’m their #1 fan.

The positives about gaming: The girls connect with their Dad, even if it is online gaming as a team. They share strategies on winning and discuss hidden bonuses when they’re in the kitchen preparing dinner. They also benefit from their dad’s knowledge on computer networking and terminology. I know they’re getting their school projects done before they game and I’m glad they’re home, not wandering the streets because they’re bored.

The negatives about gaming: The possibility that it could take over their lives, or being manipulated by online predators, does worry me. We discuss with them about being safe online and if something makes them feel uncomfortable to let us know so we can keep them safe.

Any gaming wisdom for other parents?

Be sure your children understand that gaming online is a reward for doing school work and chores. This is a great negotiating tool. Also, make sure they know they have to be open with parents about games played online because if we don’t know of any tricky situations we can’t keep them safe. As parents we need to read the body language and keep communication wide open with our children.

The last word from Gamer Dad: I’ve been gaming for 40 years and see it as something I can do with my girls. I know where they are and they’re not getting into trouble. I haven’t experienced any issues setting limits but for sure, there aren’t enough consoles and TVs at home and keeping up with technology and online subscriptions can get pricey.

LITTLE HOUSE

Former Pakuranga resident Elise Smith headed for the country some years ago but these days the artist and picture framer doesn’t live on a farm or lifestyle block; instead home is a charming Pukekohe cottage with an interesting history. HELEN PERRY talked to Elise about her special house.

Today’s contemporary homes are largely sharp, smart and practical.

Good looks come courtesy of clever architects and tend to combine clean lines, sophisticated angles and a flawless finish.

Add to that, future proofing details to ensure comfortable, sustainable and cost-effective living and you have the emerging face of most new subdivisions. However, Elise Smith’s charming cottage in an established street close to Pukekohe township has stood the test of time admirably.

While the exterior remains true to its original style the interior is a far cry from the original plan. Elise says the renovation had been done long before she and husband Tony bought the property 13 years ago but changes were done in such a way as to retain character.

“After moving in we discovered that former Pukekohe and Franklin mayor Max Short grew up in this house and lived here with his family until he married and built a house across the road,” Elise says.

“Tony and I were thrilled when he and his brother came to visit us a couple of years after we moved in.

Because of the era in which it was built, Elise admits the house can be cold – “none of today’s modernisms such as insulation in every corner or double glazed windows. However, when the previous owners changed the use of most rooms, and pushed the ‘new’ lounge (formerly a bedroom) out on to what was a wrap-around sunporch and closed it in, the result was a flood of sun and warmth into this expanded living area.”

The lounge also leads to the ‘new’ north-facing kitchen and dining and on to a north/east facing deck. What was the original lounge is now the master bedroom and what was the kitchen is now a second bedroom although it still contains the brick surround and alcove which once housed a coal range.

“I love the respect which has been paid to this house, the alterations being focused on modern living whilst preserving its history; it reminds me of parts of Howick and its historic past” says Elise who, nevertheless has made her own mark on the home.

A mixed media artist and picture framer, she has added many artistic touches from a charming mosaic glass window at the front of the cottage, to mosaic tiles and garden art. The interior walls also showcase many of her pieces.

“I’ve added various individual touches and we’ve done things such as carpet and curtains, bathroom, insulation, paintwork and a new wooden benchtop but the original renovation was so well done we haven’t had to do any major revamping although we might think about the kitchen down the track. In the meantime this is a home that suits us very well.”

Art lessons drawn from many mediums Art pretty well fills Elise Smith’s life. As a picture-framer, her cottage studio is regularly brimming with the works of fellow artists not to mention the actual artists who often pop by. And, then there’s her own eclectic mix – on the walls, around the garden, in the studio and in the shed.

Raised in Pakuranga, Elise attended Riverhills Primary School and Edgewater College before launching into a career as a graphic artist working initially for a Panmure screen printing company.

As time went by she met engineer husband Tony and married at St John’s Methodist church on the hill in East Tamaki “But it wasn’t long before a yen for country life took us to Waiau Pa,” Elise says. “After my two sons were born I started doing my own thing at home. That www.eastlife.co.nz

included helping set up the Waiau Art Group, learning picture framing, initially to earn some pin money and becoming a published illustrator of children’s books for New Zealand-based, international company Red Rocket Books.

“Although illustrating was great for a time and continues to earn me royalties, it didn’t sustain my creativity. Being a global company, for the American market, everything had to be very P.C. If I drew a dog walking along the footpath, it had to be on a leash, if the footpath was near a stream it had to fenced and so it went on.

“I was craving to grow my imagination.”

That’s when Elise took her art a step further. She began experimenting with acrylics then mixed media and then family moved to Pukekohe.

“By that time I’d also started exploring mosaic and glasswork which I still do but not as often as I would like. It’s a medium I really relish. I’m a bit of a magpie, I like the bling. I like the shine. And I like the method; in fact, I just like getting my hands dirty.”

Sourcing most of her glass from Sauvarins in Onehunga, Elise says she has successfully sold many of her mosaic works. In fact, almost totally sold out, she welcomes summer and a chance to get outside again – mosaics call for working outdoors and I can’t wait to get back into the groove; some of the glass I work with looks so good it’s almost edible!”

But if friends think she has found her niche among glass and frames, they should know better.

More recently Elise has begun experimenting with printmaking and says she is loving this new direction – “I did a bit before the

boys came along and I’ve long wanted to get back into working on paper.”

She has also explored soft sculpture and makes a range of jewellery from broken china – a semi fusion of Maori and European craftsmanship – the materials being colonial in nature while the pendants are finished with traditional greenstone lashing.

Although time is always an issue – Elise still attends the Waiau Art Group gatherings and is heavily committed to picture framing – she says she and Tony still find time to escape to Coromandel in the camper van which Elise outfitted.

“I’ve always been a bit of a hippie; I’d love to spend more time just wandering and pursing art but, for now, that dream will have to keep for the future.” eastlife | january 2019 |

Made to muster

– BArfoot tHrouGH tHe mountAins Nick Bates’ ‘momma’ probably never dreamed her baby would grow up to be a cowboy but, regardless, that’s a claim this Pakuranga huntsman can make fresh after hitting that dusty trail. JON RAWLINSON explains.

Winding its way through Wyoming, the Big Horn Cattle Drive sees experienced ranchers take guests on an extensive horse trek herding hundreds of cattle. But there’s no room for ‘tourists’ during this arduous ride; everyone has to muck in as best they can.

“On day one, they had all the horses lined up with guests’ names on the saddles. My horse (called Thunder) was the ugliest, oldest, down-and-out looking horse I’ve ever seen! He was fit, but ugly, grey and 27 years old. I thought ‘oh crap!’”

“My experience with horses was definitely helpful. Others on the drive were all learning how to do up a saddle, but horses are second nature to me,” he says.

“The [Kerns] family have been offering this experience for about 15 years but they’ve been ranching for more than 200 years. This definitely isn’t a dude ranch, it’s the real deal. We didn’t have to do any of the roping, for example, but we were involved with virtually every other part of the drive. The guides encouraged us to jump in and do whatever work we felt comfortable with.”

“But, after a day in the saddle, and the following day working cattle, I had a whole new appreciation for him and we formed quite the bond.

They actually don’t tend to give him to guests – he’s reserved for the ranch hands – but they match horses to riders based on their experience.”

“It was incredible and even suitable for people who don’t have riding experience. I felt like I was a real cowboy for a week, not just some guy wearing a costume.”

Of course, the right horse can make all the difference between smooth sailing and a rocky road. In this respect, Nick’s appointed mount proved experience is vital.

When the Kerns family from the USA first learned that a Barfoot & Thompson branch manager from New Zealand was gearing up to help them keep their dogies rollin’, they could be forgiven for thinking they’d have a genuine greenhorn city slicker on their hands.

However, as an experienced horseman (and former Texas resident) Nick Bates is as at home on the range as he is showing houses.

Since purchasing his first horse with the proceeds of a newspaper round, aged 10, Nick has clocked up many hours in the saddle over the years. Today, he raises pinto sport horses and rides with the Pakuranga and Maramarua Hunts.

This latest adventure was certainly

not his first ‘rodeo’.

“I honestly thought I was going to be saddle-sore but I was actually quite saddle-fit, having just come out of a hunting season.

It is a different style of riding to equestrian sports, though – on a western saddle rather than an English one, as used for hunting and jumping – but I was in good condition.”

Being in good ‘nick’ was useful for Nick as adopting the right attitude.

However, acclimatising to the altitude of the Rocky Mountain country was a challenge he didn’t expect.

“After our first ride on day one, we were at about 8500 feet above sea level. I found that quite difficult but it was amazing how quickly my body adapted,” he says. “The cattle and horses follow the same route year after year, which is helpful; www.eastlife.co.nz

they know the drill, even though we were travelling more than 70 kilometres or so.”

While guests can sleep under the stars of the ‘cowboy state’ during the six-day, five-night drive, shelter is available and guides are on hand to ensure certain critters won’t bite.

“There were some inexperienced riders. One guy from the UK, who was in his late sixties or early seventies, was a genuine city slicker, never been on a horse before in his life. He adapted very well. The guides were very helpful and others (including myself) stepped up to help him out too.”

“Most of the guides slept out but we did have a canvas tent of sorts, propped up with sticks. At the time of year I went, it was warm and dry during the day but very cold at night – we needed sub-zero sleeping bags.

“It was too cold – and the wrong time of year – for rattlesnakes, but we had to be wary of bears and coyotes. Overall, it’s just important to listen to the guides who have been riding through this country for many years.”

Although Nick expected to enjoy the work from sun up to sundown, evening yarns offered the perfect way to cap off a hard day’s ride.

“Sitting around the campfire with a big old-fashioned coffeepot on the coals, was as authentic an experience you can get. We spent plenty of time swapping stories and guests from all over the world had their own, very different, stories to tell.”

While the Big Horn Cattle Drive is an immersive, interactive experience, it need not break the bank. However, it did cost a little more than Nick’s first horse. Asked how many paper rounds it would have required, he laughs: “A lot! The actual cost of the drive was around US $2500, not including flights and accommodation for a day or two

before and afterwards. It was pretty reasonable considering how fantastic it was.

“It really was the trip of a lifetime, so genuine, with the rustic ruggedness of the country, the beautiful, natural scenery. Riding has always been my sanctuary from everything – when you get on a horse it literally takes you away from everything.”

Capital visit enthrals student leaders Howick Primary School student leaders made their way to Wellington for the annual leadership visit in November.

After a whole year of fundraising, including washing teachers’ cars, having a “guess how many lollies in the jar” competition, running games at the school discos and holding their own bake sale, they raised enough to pay for all the things they wanted to do and see while in Wellington.

On arriving in the capital, students, escorted by the deputy principal and the executive officer, visited the ANZAC Exhibit at Te Papa Museum where they were amazed at the detail in the more-than-lifelike images.

Moving on to Parliament they were met by the Pakuranga MP, Simeon Brown and were lucky enough to find the House in session and to hear “Question Time”. Following the Parliament visit, the group

enjoyed an amazing experience at ‘Capital E’ – Creative Experience, where they learnt how to make a TV programme using green screens and to read from an autocue.

Students gained valuable knowledge from the various places they visited and were fascinated by the behaviours they experienced when watching the leaders of our nation in Parliament House.

The annual trip is something all students aspire to and, therefore, eagerly seek a student leader role. However, they soon realise that leadership is about serving their fellow students and helping them at school in a wide variety of ways.

They learn that to be a successful leader, they have to sometimes put other people’s needs and wants ahead of their own.

After days and days of the same snacks, children may become less interested in what you serve them. There are only so many snacks which are easy to prepare, nutritious, and cost effective. But, with a little imagination on your part, these same snacks can be made more appealing.

Name the snack

Many snacks can be coloured with just a drop or two of food colouring.

Kiddies will love drinking green milk on St. Patrick’s Day or eating blue pudding in summer.

Giving a snack a fun name allows your child to use their imagination ie; Annie apple or Oscar orange.

Let your child help make the snack The age of children will determine how much of a snack they can prepare by themselves. Something as small as letting them serve themselves may be enough to excite them about what they will be eating. Depending on the snack, your child may be able to mix or assemble it.

Shape the snack Many snacks such as cheese, jelly, and breads can be easily shaped with a cookie cutter. Some store bought snacks such as crackers, biscuits, and fruit snacks will already feature kid-friendly shapes.

Educate your child If the snack is related to a theme, talk about this. Your child may have a lot more fun eating bananas when you have just read the Dear Zoo book with monkeys in it. You

Most parents know that a great day out can very quickly turn to custard if the kids go too long between drinks (or snacks). Try the following ideas for a quick fun bite on the run: • Cheese and rice crackers • Apple slices, raisins, mandarin segments, blueberries, grapes.

• Hummus and carrot sticks.

• Cashews or almonds and dried apricots • Cheese pieces (good for at home when dinner’s running late) • Mini sandwich shapes: use heart, star or crescent shapes for bitesized marmite, peanut butter or jam sandwiches.

• Celery “boats” filled with cream cheese or peanut butter.

• Digestive biscuit “sandwiches” filled with cream cheese.

• Savoury pikelets: Add some grated carrot, crushed frozen peas or other finely chopped veggies plus a cup of cheese to your usual pikelet recipe.

We hope you enjoy trying some of these quick and easy snacks during the holidays ahead of the school year.

EYE FILLET OF BEEF & SUMMER FARMERS’ MARKET SALAD inGrEDiEntS (serves 4) lemon vinaigrette • 2-3 Tbsp lemon juice • 1 tsp prepared mild mustard • 1 tsp runny honey • 6 tsp extra virgin olive oil • Sea salt and black pepper beef • 500g–600g eye fillet of beef, cut from thicker end, trimmed of silver skin, at room temperature • Olive oil for rubbing • Black pepper • Sea salt Summer farmers’ market salad

• 2–3 ears of corn • 4 scallopini (patty pan squash), sliced very thinly, preferably using a mandolin • 3 small zucchini, trimmed and cut into thin strips using a vegetable peeler • 250g green beans, trimmed and steamed • 2 handfuls of small yellow tomatoes, cut in half horizontally • 1 ripe but firm avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled and sliced • A handful of coriander leaves • A small bunch of chives, snipped

mEthoD lemon vinaigrette – Place lemon juice, mustard, honey and oil in a screw-top jar. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Shake well. Set aside until needed. beef – Preheat oven to 210°C. Tie beef with kitchen string to hold its shape. Heat frying pan over high heat. Rub beef with olive oil and brown beef on sides and each end.

Transfer to roasting tin, grind over freshly ground black pepper and drizzle with a little more oil. Place in oven and cook for 18–20 mins for

medium-rare beef. Remove from oven, season with salt, cover loosely with foil and a clean tea towel and leave to rest for at least 20 mins.

Summer farmers’ market salad – Heat barbecue grill until medium-hot.

Remove husks and silks from corn.

Place corn on grill and grill for 10–12 mins, turning regularly. Remove from the grill and leave to cool slightly before cutting the kernels from cobs.

Place all remaining vegetables in a shallow serving bowl, add corn and drizzle with enough lemon vinaigrette to moisten. Top with herbs.

Smoothie: • 1 x 120ml tub WaHiki Chocolate flavoured coconut ice-cream • 1 ripe banana • 10 ice cubes • 1/2 cup milk of choice • 3 fresh mint leaves

Place all ingredients in a blender and pulse several times to distribute ingredients. Blend at high speed until smooth.

Pour into a serving bowl, add toppings and... enjoy!

IN YOUR HOUSE?

We can all say cheese… please! But who knows their soft cheese from hard cheese? To help you say more than just ‘cheese’, SOUTH has listed just a few varieties and how they are best appreciated. briE: Most Kiwis love this French dessert cheese traditionally made using unpasteurised cow’s milk.

It has a slightly furry rind and the inside texture is smooth and creamy. Ideal on an antipasto platter or in the summer picnic basket, serve with crackers – try lavosh – crusty bread, a dash of relish, a slice of salami, a taste of sweet gherkin and a few grapes accompanied by a glass of bubbles or a sweet but cold dessert wine. chÈvrE: A deliciously smooth and creamy goat’s milk cheese from France, it is best eaten fresh and is often combined with herbs and garlic; adds a punchy element to salads and pasta. Enjoy with a glass of rosé.

EmmEntal: A famous cheese, which originated in Switzerland but is made globally. It’s the one which is full of holes! Actually, the holes are gas bubbles formed by bacteria during the fermentation process! A medium hard cheese, it is popular in sauces, fondues and toasted sandwiches because it melts easily.

It is also great when paired with apples, grapes, peaches, and pears on a cheese tray. Enjoy with merlot,

reisling, beaujolais or bubbles. If you’re a beer drinker, try a Belgian beer, a light lager, or a stout to complement the slightly fruity taste of this cheese.

FEta: Originating from Greece and made from a combination of sheep and goat’s milk, feta cheese is generally stored in salty brine. The texture ranges from smooth and creamy to crumbly, dry and very salty – perfect for crumbling over salads, particularly Greek salads, as well as other vegetable dishes.

Great for dips and with fruit; a good match with merlot or reisling. mozzarElla: Best known as topping on pizza, this stringy, white Italian cheese made from buffalo milk can be eaten fresh, added to lasagne, melted over meatballs and is also great in salads and sandwiches. It works as a stand in for Mexican cheese –enchiladas smothered in mozzarella – so good! Pinot Grigio pairs well with fresh mozzarella.

ParmiGiano rEGGiano: Although most commonly referred to as Parmesan cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano is produced in select regions throughout Europe – the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia and Modena – and is the real deal.

Traditionally produced from cow’s milk, this popular cheese is hard, granulated and crumbly with a strong flavour. Shave or grate over pasta and salads, Parmigiano reggiano can also be stirred into sauces and soups or eaten as a snack – love that bite. It pairs well with everything from Italian dessert wines or sparkling wines, to fullbodied reds, softer merlots and Italian whites such as Pinot Grigio. roQuEFort: Originating from France, Roquefort is traditionally made with sheep’s milk. It is sharp and tangy but also very creamy – a favourite for lovers of true blue cheese. Be warned though, this one has a pungent smell. Enjoy alongside figs, nuts and quince paste or on some freshly baked crusty bread – divine. Whether buying

genuine Roquefort or another blue cheese variety don’t be off put by pungency or looks. Rich and creamy, blue cheeses can add salty and savoury depth to many dishes and even a hint of sweetness depending on the variety. They can cut the heat in a spicy dish, balance bitter greens in a salad, or enhance the natural sweetness of fruits and nuts. Acquire the taste and you’ll love them forever. Pair with cabernet sauvignon. talEGGio: A semi-soft, washedrind Italian cheese made from cow’s milk. Despite its strong smell, the flavour is mild with a slight tang being rather fruity and buttery. The flavour becomes more pronounced as the cheese ages.

Taleggio also melts well and has more flavour than mozzarella.

Perfect when paired with a bold chardonnay.

Thirty years on YVONNE VANNOORT, from Sanctuary Dental, Bishop Dunn Place, Botany talks about her fulfilling dental career.

This year, this month, I’m celebrating 30 years since I graduated from dental school. So what’s changed in that time?

When I started my five year course in dentistry we wore no gloves when we worked in the mouth, AIDS changed that as well as many other sterilisation methods which became much more stringent and are still improving today.

Are your lips dry and chapped? Constantly exposed to the elements and covered with fragile skin, lips have no oil glands to hydrate them so they need special care to prevent chapping.

Technology didn’t play much of a part at all back then; our records were all handwritten and X-rays were processed in chemicals.

Today we are computerised and digitised and almost paperless.

We use 3-Dimensional X-rays, make crowns and bridges which are milled on site while you wait and we routinely replace teeth with implants which look and feel like real teeth. We also use lasers routinely.

Now, we use a microscope to help us identify bugs in the mouth which cause gum disease. We have a monitor for clients to use at home overnight to assess sleep issues and we use advanced composites and ceramics to restore teeth.

these guidelines can help you achieve soft, healthy lips: • Stop licking: while running your tongue over your mouth may help it feel better in the short term, in actuality, your saliva has enzymes that dry out the lips.

• Exfoliate gently: using a soft-bristled toothbrush, rub your lips in a circular motion to remove dry skin.

Follow up by using lip balm. Avoid this tip if your lips are severely chapped.

• use lip balm: keep lips moisturised with a product which has a base of shea butter, coconut oil or beeswax and is enriched with Vitamin A or E. If spending time outside, use a balm with SPF to protect this part of your face from the sun.

• avoid long-wear lipstick: if you refuse to leave home without lipstick, choose one that’s rich, creamy and moisturising. Or better yet, opt for a tinted lip balm.

We also use advanced techniques to sedate and monitor clients when required so they snooze while all necessary treatment is completed... and we don’t remove children’s teeth to straighten them! And that’s just to name a few.

What hasn’t changed? I can

• apply vaseline nightly: before you go to bed, coat your lips with petroleum jelly. You’ll be amazed at how soft they feel in the morning.

• Drink water: just like the rest of your body, your lips won’t stay hydrated if you’re not drinking enough water.

So it’s water, balm, high SPF sunscreen and, where applicable, exfoliation to keep lips hydrated, soft and healthy.

honestly say in all of those years, no one day has ever felt like another! It has been such a privilege to help many people overcome challenges in their mouths – sore teeth, sore or bleeding gums, missing teeth, discoloured teeth, worn teeth, infected teeth, crooked teeth, airway issues – and to always keep in mind the context of how these issues influence the health of the rest of your body. The problems haven’t changed over that time.

My mission has been to solve all of those problems and more.... in a gentle, non judgmental and empathetic way which puts people at ease and encourages trust and confidence.

Looking for better ways to do things and solve more problems hasn’t changed. The special training and courses in New Zealand, and worldwide, continue to be attended.

Then there’s the amazing people who are part of my team. They are as passionate about looking after people as I am – none of what I do can be achieved without them.

Street artists embrace Kiwi culture Making the leap from tagging buildings in south Auckland to becoming internationally-renowned street artists, husband-and-wife team Janine and Charles Williams are trail-blazers when it comes to art. ANGELA KEMP caught up with one half of this remarkable couple.

It was a typical busy day on Great South Road in Papatoetoe where Janine Williams was putting the finishing touches to a new mural on the frontage of Hunters Plaza. The cordoned off area where she was working alongside the artwork’s designer, Papatoetoe High School student, Saffire Moore, didn’t stop a steady stream of curious passers-by stopping to ask what they were doing.

There’s nothing Janine likes better than engaging with the public when she is transforming a bland concrete façade.

“Art and colour quickly change an environment and I think New Zealanders in particular are very hands on and creative,” she says.

“So when you have something like this [the Hunters Plaza mural] in your community, people respond very quickly and they keep stopping to talk and tell us how much they love it. I love the way art does that.”

The Williams’ have turned a passion for their art into a successful professional career with a large client list which includes several government departments and institutions, private commissions and festival projects.

Their distinctive style can be seen in urban landscapes across Auckland (such as a fantastic tui at Manukau Mall)and many other towns across New Zealand .They have achieved celebrity status in street art circles across the world and are renowned for their incorporation of Maori design and endemic birds in the colourful murals they create.

“Charles and I combine the different aesthetics of what we love to paint together. So, Charles paints the birds and I am really interested in the design and cultural background.

The couple draw their intricatelydesigned murals freehand, using aerosol cans and acrylic paint.

“We have always been bigger and more popular internationally than at home so we have travelled a fair bit and become established overseas.

Now, slowly back here, people are going, ‘oh, is that what you do!’.”

Janine grew up in Papatoetoe and went to Papatoetoe High School.

“I’ve always been really passionate about art but back then it was a bit different and art wasn’t a reality career choice. I was into fonts and calligraphy – graffiti just looked like a different working of that. I pretty much learned on the street which is where I met Charles – we were both graffiti artists and attended the same local church, Faith City in Manukau.”

Charles is a founding member of TMD (The Most Dedicated) and led the crew to international success winning the 2006 and 2008 International Graffiti Art competitions in Germany.

In 2010 the crew was invited to take part in street-art event in Florida where international artists were invited to paint murals across the US resort city.

It proved to be the tipping point for the Williams who paid for the trip from their first major commercial contract, painting murals for KiwiRail on Portacoms along the rail network. The murals combined native birds and contemporary Maori designs – imagery Charles and Janine have continued to include in their public exhibitions and private collections.

The couple and their four children aged 17, 15, 14 and 12, live on the Waimahia Inlet at Weymouth. Janine says the youngsters are creative but not into paint.

“They’re into building, making things, fashion and music, that sort of world. We try and limit the number of international trips we do together at the same time so one of www.eastlife.co.nz

COLOURFUL MURAL BRIGHTENS STREETSCAPE us is home as often as possible.

“We say, ‘no’ to as many projects as we say, ‘yes’ just because of the whole balancing act. But our life has always been like this since they [the children] were born; they’re used to it.”

Janine says street art and murals have really taken off in the past couple of years.

“There are enough professional artists in New Zealand now to quickly change an environment on a budget that costs a whole lot less than maybe one bronze sculpture.”

The couple’s international recognition continues to grow.

In 2014 Charles was invited to participate in a Guinness World Records attempt, making the world’s longest graffiti scroll – a 2245-metre art work in Dubai. The following year, he took out top spot at the Ono’u Graffiti Festival in Tahiti. www.eastlife.co.nz

He has even had a spray can named after him – Phat1 True Royal is on the range of global spray paint and art suppliers Ironlak.

Impressively, one mural by the couple featured alongside a collection of works by perhaps the most famous street artist of all, England-based global graffiti artist Banksy at the Tauranga Art Gallery.

Despite the accolades coming their way, Charles and Janine haven’t forgotten their roots. The couple are also passing on their knowledge and experience to new generations of budding street artists through workshops and school programmes and have helped develop a school tag-free scheme in conjunction with police.

Papatoetoe High School student Saffire Moore’s dream of becoming an artist took a big leap forward when she won a mural competition organised by Westfield’s Hunters Plaza late last year.

The 16-year-old beat 24 other entries to see her design re-created on the shopping mall’s façade by acclaimed street artists, Janine and Charles Williams.

Saffire (pictured below with Janine) said the brief was to design a mural which portrayed the diversity of Papatoetoe’s

community. “I designed a white dove representing the purity and hope of our community with representations of the different cultures flowing from it. They include Samoan and Maori patterns and other cross cultural designs which are special to south Auckland.”

The mural is the first step in what Saffire hopes will be a career as a professional artist/muralist after she finishes school – “I want to make communities brighter and better,” she says adding that she was thrilled she could work alongside Janine to see her work come to life.

The programme aims to reduce graffiti vandalism by encouraging students to develop pride and respect for themselves and their community and using art in positive ways. eastlife | january 2019 |

We know Jacs Our PM had more than a few troubled waters to negotiate in 2018 – particularly when a ‘Bridges’ was all over them. But, as we headed into the break, Ms Ardern still appeared to be on an even keel, as these snapshots based on reports from her office indicate.

Green means money Armed with a $100 million injection of start-up capital, NZ Green Investment Finance Ltd will help curtail this country’s greenhouse gas emissions, Ms Ardern expects.

“Tackling climate change is a priority for this Government and business involvement is crucial...

No one can opt out of the impacts of climate change. Lowering emissions will require innovation and action from all sectors,” the PM said.

The funding is intended to stimulate private sector investment in low-emissions industries with the Government investment to be repaid in future. “This fund means the Government is bringing cash and know-how to the table to partner with business to deliver a clean, green future for everyone.”

Doctoring the system...

While some argue the health of our workforce is most vital to our economic health, it’s also important to ensure those (for the most part) who don’t work still stay in good shape. For this reason, taxpayers will now further subsidise doctors’

visits for almost 600,000 of our society’s most vulnerable adults.

Community Services Card holders will see the cost of doctor’s visits fall by an average of $20-30.

“Cost should not put people off going to see the doctor,” Ms Ardern said. “The Government has made cost much less of a barrier to hundreds of thousands of Kiwis.”

The initiative follows the extension of free primary care to 13-year-olds, previously restricted to children aged 12 years and under.

New Bill ‘job’ done?

Who would expect a Labour government to work on behalf of workers? Our PM for one. Recently, Ms Ardern tabled the Employment Relations Bill, which seeks to better protect workers’ rights.

“Every aspect of our Bill is better than the current employment legislation and delivers rights and protections for workers which were stripped from them

by National,” she said. “There is much to celebrate in this legislation, [leading] to better and more consistent outcomes in workplaces.”

The Bill sets new (or amended) requirements. The Government listened to public submissions and internal discussions with coalition partners were conducted before the Bill was finalised, Ms Ardern confirms.

“Each party has bought different views and the consensus reached will result in law that is better for workers and employers.”

The Bill is accessible online via parliament.nz.

Fuel for thought...

The PM appears intent on ensuring the price of gas isn’t artificially pumped up by petrol providers.

A new Commerce Commission market study aims to determine whether consumers’ interests are being protected, and if not, what action should be taken.

“New Zealanders deserve peace of mind that the price they’re paying at the pump is fair. At the moment we can’t definitively say that is the case [nationwide] so this most certainly warrants a full investigation,” Ms Ardern said. “I have previously voiced my concern about the high cost of fuel, because

it is a core expense for consumers and businesses.”

The move follows the introduction of Auckland’s regional fuel tax and an increase to fuel excise tax, both hit home last year, contributing to record prices at the pump.

Around the Bush Unlike his predecessor (and the current POTUS), George Bush Snr may not be remembered by a star on Hollywood’s walk of fame but his legacy can be seen elsewhere, our PM recently contended.

“George HW Bush’s statesmanship played a key role in helping end the Cold War, which brought democracy to millions and diminished the threat of nuclear war,” she said soon after his passing. “[He] was a strong supporter of the international rules-based system, rule of law and democratic values.”

Mr Bush was also an envoy to China, CIA director, and Vice President. “Our deepest condolences are extended to the Bush family and the people of the United States of America.”
