I

t’s not every day that the Prime Minister, Bill English taps you on the shoulder and wants to know how you are doing.

There was a mix of emotion as people at the Botany Town Centre food court looked startled and excited as Mr English casually introduced himself to diners.

He chatted, laughed, posed for selfies, signed autographs and even bent down to tie a three-year-old boy’s shoe laces.

Mr English may not seem a natural in front of the camera but he certainly was a hero with kids and their parents, young adults and seniors who were thrilled as the PM stopped by to enquire about their families and schools and answer questions.

Trigger-happy shoppers with their cameras and cellphones followed him through the mall as Mr English readily obliged everyone who wanted to have a photograph with him.

If he was tired after a blur of nonstop campaign activities or answering tough questions from the media, he didn’t show it.

The Times asked Mr English which energy pills he took to pack in 50 hours a day.

“I don’t take any energy pills,” he laughed. “It’s just that I want to win so badly,” the PM said earnestly.

people and a mix of people he’s connected with as a local MP. Television crews and national media who have been following the Prime Minister on his campaign trail were all there as Mr English announced the Family Policy for 2017 election on Sunday morning.

Minister for Revenue Judith Collins and Minister for Education Nikki Kaye along with Mr Ross were by his side as he answered a volley of questions from the national media that included the fuel crisis and Waitangi Day. A feast was laid out at Lone Star as

guests were treated to a selection from the famous Lone Star menu.

It had Jami-Lee’s grandmother Sharron Martin, the lady who has raised him say, “I thought there were just going to be some children running around this morning, I didn’t realise it would be such a great event with so much food.”

While Mr English didn’t have any time to taste the generous spread, his wife Mary was later spotted picking up a salad from nearby.

There is no time to eat or rest for the PM who wants to win so badly.

Local teacher receives Kalman Maths Award

W

omen in New Zealand started voting 124 years ago but it’s been only three years since Telephone Voting was introduced for the visually impaired or for those with other physical disabilities.

“We all have the right to a secret vote, so if you can’t mark the paper without assistance, you can vote by telephone which was introduced last election,” says Ezekiel Robson as he familiarises a group of around 30 students with varying disabilities at the Sommerville Special School.

The school caters for 200 special needs students and 34 classes that includes satellite classes in different local schools like Riverhills School, Edgewater College and Howick Intermediate has recently relocated to Pakuranga.

As part of a community project, Mr Robson is taking the young adults through the paces of voting and giving them a perfect idea of the voting process with a role play.

“The Electoral Commission has a range of ways it can help people with different access needs,” he says as he talks about staff assisted voting and postal votes.

Keen to see that disabled people are more aware, informed, and visible, he plays a key role in the non profit organisation My Voice Matters.

Mr Robson has been travelling throughout Auckland addressing disabled groups and encouraging them to exercise their right to vote. “There is a Takeaway votelike McDonald’s,” he says trying to grab the interest of the students who are easily distracted.

“The support person can go to a voting place with your verbal permission and collect the voting paper for those who are unable to visit a public place. You can pick it up from anywhere in the country and drop it back to any polling booth before September 23.”

Fighting for equal opportunities, Mr Robson says that he contested the Manurewa Local Board elections in 2016 in order to “educate the politicians that people with disability matter”.

Interestingly, he says that it was Times Newspapers that had asked the readers to come up with possible questions for previous Mayoral elections that proved to be a turning point for him.

Mathematics is universally shunned, and educator Subash Chandar K knows it.

Mr Chandar K left his job and backpacked to 26 countries. It didn’t take him long to work out a common denominator. The minute he introduced himself as a mathematics teacher, people would promptly say they hated maths.

“I couldn’t believe that regardless of which part of the world I was in, there was a universal dislike for maths,” smiles the award-winning curriculum leader of mathematics at Ormiston Senior College.

His resolve to change how people feel about the subject became stronger while volunteering in Nepal and Bali at a children’s home.

“Dealing with students with 30 different needs in a classroom in Bali, I felt there has to be a big shift in how we deliver content to kids.”

Back in New Zealand, the journey began. It involves creating maths videos for students.

A flipped classroom is when learn-

ing happens outside the traditional classroom.

Mr Chandar K started creating YouTube videos where he answered a series of exam papers on video, teaching students the right strategy to solve mathematical problems.

He created a YouTube series Calculus daily for Year 13 students in preparation for externals in 2016. Students would get a proper understanding from the fully worked-out answer papers and come prepared for the following day to class.

The idea was well-received, not only by students but also by the teaching community.

The 35-year-old was soon invited to host workshops for teachers’ professional learning; won a scholarship and asked to run workshops at the NZ Maths Conference in 2015 and 2017.

Recipient of the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert Award, (an award for innovative educators) three years in a row, he was also acknowledged worldwide for winning the #Class Hack challenge during #HackTheClassRoom event held by Microsoft in September 2016. ➤ Turn to page 10

Carol Turner an Occupational Therapist at HBH Senior Living (previously called Howick Baptist Healthcare) says that Occupational Therapy is an art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living through occupation.

“Occupation is everything you do to occupy yourself, like looking after yourself, enjoying life and contributing to your social community.

What about food trucks in the park?

■■By Therese Henkin Food trucks have been rolling around Auckland for a while now, but they’ve recently been making their way out east and causing debate around the Howick Local Board table.

With an increasing number of mobile coffee vendors and food truck operators asking the board for permission to operate in Barry Curtis Park and Lloyd Elsmore Park, Garry Boles lead of the parks portfolio, says this is something worth discussing.

Boles says while he sees the value in embracing the urban food truck trend in east Auckland, which can bring a “real vibrancy and fun” to the community, there are many other considerations.

He says we have to look at how food trucks will impact traffic, how it will affect business for surrounding restaurants and how to keep the parks clean.

“One of the most important [considerations] is understanding the potential impacts it might have on local businesses,” Boles says.

“The guys running a business up the road say ‘we have to pay rates, pay for staff and water and all the rest of it whereas these guys set up down the road, they don’t pay any rent, they don’t have any expenses, but they can undercut the living daylights out of us which is really unfair because I’ve got a business to run’.

And you can see their point.”

However, Boles says he is worried that if vendors aren’t given permission they will set up illegally, which he has seen happen many times as a police officer.

“In the past I have had a lot of people who are doing it illegally and what they were doing is they were causing a lot of damage to the parks by driving their cars up onto the reserve and things like that,” he says.

“So you have a catch 22. Either you give these people a designated area where they can sell stuff and it’s a controlled environment, or you don’t and they just set up and go where they please.”

In a controlled environment, Boles says, mobile food vendors will help create a hub of activity in the Howick Botany ward that will bring the community together, particularly over the summer months.

“They can perhaps pay for a spot to be there which covers the cost of taking the rubbish away and cleaning or providing a toilet and water and those things,” he says.

“And once we start to set this up, the possibilities are endless.

eachers from schools as far away as Clevedon gathered at Howick College last week to celebrate the launch of the Howick Coast Kahui Ako Community of Learning (COL).

One of 51 Communities of Learning in Auckland, the Howick Coast COL is about schools working together to improve performance levels among all students.

The COL comprises eight local schools – Beachlands School, Botany Downs School, Brookby School, Clevedon School, Howick College, Howick Intermediate, Howick Primary and Maraetai Beach School.

Howick Coast COL Principal Julie Schumacher says principals and teachers from all schools will work together to find innovative ways to support students as they move through the education system.

“It’s about us being able to achieve something more than we can achieve on our own,” she says.

Schumacher says its also about creating an area wide standard so that students changing schools within the same area can expect the same high level of education.

Principals and teachers from all schools will work together to set achievement challenges and action plans to ensure the success of more and more of their children and young people, she says.

“Every one of our schools is fortunate enough to be a high performing school and already without the communities of learning we are doing a really good job for our children.

Education Minister Nikki Kaye announced last month that the Howick Coast Community of Learning is one of 13 to be set up through New Zealand, taking the total number of COL’s across the country to

210.

“More than 580,000 children and young people are now in a Community of Learning.

“Communities bring together early learning services, primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary providers to work together to raise achievement for all their children and young people,” Kaye said in a press release.

“Seeing talented, experienced principals and teachers working with expert partners in this way is what the initiative is all about.”

Concern over new park contract T

he grass may not be greener, but it certainly will be longer in the Howick Botany ward parks and reserves.

Grass will be allowed to grow up to a maximum of 200mm tall, almost as high as a litre milk bottle, before it needs to be cut, and trees could go without pruning for as long as five years.

These are just two of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) measures in Auckland Council’s latest parks maintenance contract for the Howick Ward. The KPIs were released to East Tamaki Heights resident Mark Hanson, who says he was keen to find out if the council would hold the new contractor to account financially for failure to meet the KPI requirements.

The Botany local says it was “just a simple inquiry” that was treated as a Local Government Official Information Act (LGOIMA) request by Auckland Council.

The response said the grass on a neighbourhood park “should be no shorter than 50mm and no higher than 200mm” and the tree trimming allows for “a cyclic tree pruning rotation of five years for street trees.”

The new contracts were given to Australian company Ventia and came into effect in July.

“Its early days, so yes let’s give them some time, but I don’t hold out much hope. All these contractors want to do is the bare minimum – and it’s our money, we’re paying for it.”

Simon Randall, the council’s Acting Head Of Operational Management And Maintenance says he is confident that Aucklanders can expect to see expect better maintenance of their local parks under the new contracts.

“Our maintenance contracts,

including for parks, are outcomes based now – this means they carry out the work as and when it’s needed rather than on a preset schedule,” he says.

The LGOIMA response said “The contracts have performance management mechanisms for failure to meet contract KPIs and a dedicated team that will monitor the outcomes and deliverables. Council retains the right to withhold up to 10 per cent of a monthly invoice for continuing, non-mitigated performance breaches.”

Mr Hanson said while ‘continuing non-mitigated breaches’ was fairly open, the council response is encouraging.

Howick local board member John Spiller says he has seen a significant deterioration in park maintenance in recent years and is looking forward to improved outcomes with the new providers. “My view on mowing frequencies of parks and reserves is that this should be carried out to provide maximum enjoyment and access to these special places with an emphasis on frequency over the warmer months,” he says.

“It seems a wasteful practice to mow at set frequencies throughout the year when people are not using the parks nearly as much over late autumn, winter and early spring.”

A well-known face around East Auckland James Brownlie has worked as a chiropractor in Pakuranga since July 1971 and definitely has no retirement plans at this stage.

He grew up in an Auckland farming family and did his secondary school years at Otahuhu College where he was Head Prefect. He went on to complete a Science Degree at Massey University in Palmerston North.

Mr Brownlie’s focus has always been on good health care and sports. Having the distinction of being Auckland Secondary Schools’ sprint champion in the 100m and 200m events, while at Massey University James won a prestigious “Blue” Award – the highest sporting accolade given to tertiary students.

With a special interest in athletics and rugby, he is now a Life Member of the Grammar Tech Rugby Club – a club he has supported for many years.

“I read a great deal about chiropractic treatment and it fascinated me as a drugless healing system,” he says.

The aim of this treatment is for people to reach optimum health through correction of the spine and nervous system. Chiropractors provide specific adjustments so the body can operate at full potential.

“In the 1960s, I travelled to the US where I did my studies at the Palmer College in Iowa. I then practiced for a year in Michigan, but I didn’t enjoy the severity of winter there and was missing family so returned to live in Howick in 1970,” Mr Brownlie explains.

He then established a business based at the corner of Glenmore and Pakuranga Roads. In the early 90s, Mr Brownlie bought the house where his business is now based and had it moved to the corner of Gossamer Drive and Pakuranga Highway. Surrounded by well-tended cottage gardens, this building was an attractive addition on the busy Pakuranga Highway and has become a local landmark.

James has five children with his youngest daughter now attending university in the city. “They have all grown up and attended local schools here,” he says.

Arguably one of the longest-serving professionals in the district, he has witnessed huge changes since he first set up. As well as the massive development of areas which were formerly farmland, he has seen huge changes in his working life with the introduction of new computer technol-

ogy. “For 22 years, I developed my own X-rays. That used to take about 30 minutes but now I outsource these and have a digital image in a matter of minutes,” he says. “The improvement in imaging makes it much easier to identify specific problems.”

But, he is not impressed with the increasing rate of obesity, with all the subsequent health problems such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

“Since the 70s, the New Zealand diet has deteriorated with the use of so much processed food – packed with additives.

We are now in the midst of an obesity epidemic.”

Mr Brownlie doesn’t sprint or run marathons as he used to but his interest in sports and health care remains strong.

Faye travelled to Moscow where she spent 32 days – 29 of which were gruelling treatment days – before arriving home on June 25.

The standard time frame to know whether or not the treatment has worked is generally three years – but for Faye, the change was near instant.

aye Braddock is a very different woman to the one she was two months ago.

When the Times last spoke to her in late March, she was battling extreme fatigue and struggling with her cognitive function and mobility.

One Belt, One Road and other initiatives P

eople in the know have let out a collective sigh of relief.

The Maori warden initiative by Wetex Kang, Maori Party candidate for Botany is in place this week in high crime areas of Flat Bush and East Tamaki. The initiative that Mr Kang had spoken about in the last two weeks is now on the roll.

Now Mr Kang is tackling other pressing issues.

After knocking on thousands of doors and meeting people outside supermarkets in the rain and sunshine, he says that some of the other issues that stand out apart from community safety are better transportation.

“We need to consider a rail hub in Botany that will ease the congestion along Ti Rakau Drive, Ti Irirangi Drive and Chapel Road,” says the pharmacist, beekeeper and astute businessman known for thinking out of the box.

With the party’s co-leader Marama Fox announcing the policy of building a new IwiRail railway network for both freight and tourism in New Zealand, (“The rail network in this country was built on the backs of our ancestors. It connected our people,”) Mr Kang talks about another solution to the transportation problem.

He refers to the official Memorandum of Understanding signed with China Railway Zhongji Holding Group.

“It’s part of One Belt, One Road initiative to create land and maritime corridors. The highlevel strategic relationship between the Northern Regional Council and China Railway which enables us to maintain a strong and mutually beneficial relationship could work well if it is operated on a three per cent interest—if it is a government project,” he suggests.

Moving on to other issues, like helping the Asian community to integrate better into the New Zealand fabric, Mr Kang points towards

pockets of Mandarin classes run by Chinese Settler Trust, Church groups and schools, saying there is a need for a federated association.

He believes that while a good amount of groundwork has been done by a non profit organisation founded by Raymond Huo (founding trustee of the New Zealand Chinese Language Week Charitable Trust and Labour Party‘s spokesperson for Land Information) a common syllabus should be presented to local schools as either Mandarin being one of the subjects or an after school program.

“With Asia’s booming economy and New Zealand’s changing diversity landscape there are great benefits in spearheading this initiative,” he says.

He is also believes that language courses designed and offered by institutions that offers health science courses would prove beneficial.

“Asians have been relying on interpreters with no medical knowledge and a great amount of misdiagnosis has occurred,” he says. “There is great advantage in training health professionals to be bi-lingual or tri-lingual.

“Similar initiatives are available for tangata whenua/Te Reo. “Asians are fast becoming a mainstream culture (with one in four Aucklanders being Asian) and Aotearoa needs to be prepared for it.”

If he wins he promises to be well connected to the community. “I will maximise interactions with the people of Botany. A stall will be set up at the Botany night market monthly so the people of Botany can come to see me and voice their concerns or suggestions.”

“There are 18,000 households in Botany.

So if I am elected, I will attempt to visit seven households on average per day. So in three years, I would have visited 18,000 households.”

Son of Howick returns to support his Asian cousin/whanaunga Dr Lance O’Sullivan, a well known son of Howick and Pakuranga having grown up in Highland Park, a visionary in modern medicine, has personally endorsed the Maori Party’s first Asian candidate for Botany, Wetex Kang.

Former New Zealander of the Year 2014, Dr O’Sullivan is also a spokesperson for the Maori Party and is supportive of Mr Kang

on the various issues he is campaigning on, in this General Election— such as poverty, immigration, cultural integration.

Dr O’Sullivan confirms that they share similar values and has asked voters in Botany to stand behind Mr Kang so that he can execute his visions for Botany.

“This is a clear demonstration of the Maori Party’s commitment to show a political party based on Maori values can support and represent people from all cultures,” says Dr O’Sullivan.

survey of 816 rental property owners shows that 49 per cent would like their tenants to stay in the property for a very long time as they have no intention of selling.

Another 12.7 per cent would like them to stay for at least the next 10 years after which they may start thinking about selling the property.

The results indicate that a majority of rental property owners can offer security of tenure for tenants who value this.

The NZ Property Investors’ Federation (NZPIF) advices prospective tenants, who would value a long term tenancy, to ask the owner if they have any plans to sell so they can identify the owners who want long term tenants.

The result also shows that a majority of rental property owners may be willing to enter into a more formal arrangement that further protects a tenant’s security.

After the election, the NZPIF would welcome discussions with all political parties and tenant groups.

“We would like to see if we can come up with a balanced solution that provides better security for those tenants that want it, without taking away the rights of the owner or disadvantaging them in the process.

“There is potentially an increasing number of tenants who want better security in their rental properties” says NZPIF executive officer, Andrew King.

“This survey result shows that a majority of landlords want this as well, so I’m sure there must be a solution that will meet everyone’s needs.”

Another survey result showed that 77 per cent of respondents would be very or extremely concerned if the 90 day notice to end a tenancy without cause was removed.

Only 43 per cent of rental property owner respondents had ever issued a 90 day notice, and of those, 64 per cent had only issued one in the last five years.

At 33 per cent, the main reason for issuing a 90 day notice to end a tenancy was because of tenants disturbing their neighbours. Landlords have an obligation under the Residential Tenancies Act to protect the peace, privacy and comfort of their neighbours.

Other tenants and neighbours are often reluctant to put their concerns in writing, so owners do not have any evidence to present to the Tenancy Tribunal to end the tenancy. A 90 day notice without cause is often the only tool they have to comply with this obligation.

“The survey shows that rental property owners do not use 90 day notices very often and usually it is to protect other tenants and neighbours from the antisocial behaviour of their tenants,” says King.

“Removing the use of 90 day notices, as Labour is proposing, would protect tenants displaying antisocial behaviour at the expense of others”.

You should be familiar with MYOB, Xero, Banklink and Excel. The ability to set up new clients, conversion of existing software packages to Xero, and ongoing support with client products is essential. You will have strong written and oral communication skills and be able to interact with clients on a daily basis.

You will have a good work ethic, be client focused, proactive and have good time management skills. The willingness to learn new client software is essential.

ocal schools performed strongly at the Anchor AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) Games held in Tauranga last week. The AIMS Games is an international sporting event – often compared to the Commonwealth Games for 11, 12 and 13 year olds - held in the Bay of Plenty region.

More than 10,000 students from 303 schools competed in the event in a variety of individual and team sports.

Bucklands Beach Intermediate came in at first place on the Medal Table with 3 cups and 37

medals including 18 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze.

It was ninth time lucky for BBI, who has entered the Games for the last eight year and finished in the top three multiple times but only making it to the top place for this year.

BBI Director of Sports, Stacey Knowles said while first place is an incredible achievement, it’s important to remember what the Games are really about.

“It’s about playing with great sportsmanship – being appreciative of others, offering support, being proud of our school, pick-

Local teams with Lydia at NZ Open P

akuranga engineer David McKenzie has experienced a sporting world championship as a keen amateur, but that will be nothing when he gets to tee it up with Lydia Ko in the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open ProAm next week.

McKenzie has won the SKY Television competition, and will play in Ko’s team alongside MC Kim, the owner of the naming sponsor McKayson, in the Pro-Am. The father-of-two is a keen sportsman, having played Caro Bowl tennis in Auckland as a junior, and graduated on to compete in triathlon, ultimately competing twice in the Xterra Off-Road Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. And he has also completed the Longest Day competition at the Coast to Coast.

But for a number of years the structural engineer has been a keen golfer at the Pakuranga club, currently boasting a nine handicap. He entered the competition amongst SKY Television subscribers for some fun.

“I entered it ages ago and of course thought I had no chance,”

David McKenzie won a competition with Sky and secures a spot in the ProAm with Lydia Ko at the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open Pro-Am next week.

McKenzie said. “When I received the note from the organisers to say I had won, I thought it was spam.

“But my wife and I re-looked at it and thought it was the real deal.

I was pretty excited with the news.”

Now the battle is on for who

gets the job as caddy to enjoy this unique opportunity of playing with Ko, the event ambassador for the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open.

“I have two teenage children who are pretty keen. And I’ve got a good friend who is a member at Windross Farm who would be great. But my wife Jacqui really wants to do it as well.”

He had ironically played the Windross Farm course with his friend a few days before receiving the news that he had won the nationwide competition.

“I think it is a really nice course.

I did okay with an 82 although of course they had moved all the tees forward as they prepare the course for the Open.”

McKenzie said he felt nervous when he stood on the start line of the Xterra World Championship twice, and lined up on the beach at Kumara alongside all the stars in the Coast to Coast.

“I am super-excited. But the nerves with that drive on the first hole in the Pro-Am with Lydia looking on is going to be something else.”

MOTOR RACING

Podiums at Sandown for Heimgartner Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner has claimed a third podium for the weekend at Sandown Raceway today, finishing second in the 25 lap Carrera Cup ‘enduro’ on Sunday.

The result in the #777 Bob Jane T-Marts/Sonic Motor Racing Services Porsche saw the 22-yearold clinch third for the round, finishing ahead of championship leader David Wall. The Melbournebased Kiwi is now only 68 points adrift of the championship leader with two further rounds left to run in the 2017 Carrera Cup Australia season.

“The last race of the weekend saw us make some improvements with the car and we got up to second from third early in the race,” Heimgartner said. “We just didn’t have

the speed to take first off of Alex Davison unfortunately but by finishing with two seconds and a third this weekend we managed to come home with not only a round podium but also 50 more points than championship leader David Wall, so that is a very important positive for us.

“With two more events left in the championship, with those rounds to be held at none-other than the Bathurst and Gold Coast tracks, anything can happen. For now, we will enjoy the champagne and then head off to start our keen preparations for Bathurst.”

Heimgartner will next be ontrack for round seven of the Carrera Cup Australia Championship, at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama track across October 5-8.
