“At that point I felt extremely shocked and sick to my stomach, that a person who has no idea of who we are could say such a thing.

“I don’t tell the story to gain sympathy. I am telling the story because I learnt one powerful lesson, which is, people are not racist to who you are but more so, to what you represent.

“Let us acknowledge everyone as human beings first before race or religion.”

Making a point about the importance of starting meaningful conversations about race issues, he said: “Telling people they are racists, sexist and xenophobic is going to get us nowhere.

Because one of the things we know about social

psychology is that when people feel threatened, they don’t listen, they don’t change.

“People want to be heard and when that happens it is a lot easier to put themselves in someone’s shoes.”

He gives credit to his English teacher Mrs Kantha Krishna for guiding him with his speech, and adds: “The reason I like public speaking is that it gives you a platform to share your ideas and opinions and hopefully to be able to inspire people enough to spark a change.

“Also, people shouldn’t aspire to go to these events and just give speeches about racial unity and then not practice what they were preaching out in the real world. Instead, we should aim to live in a way to inspire people with our actions and not our words.”

ver the last week, 265 checkout operators from New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square stores across the Auckland region took to the tills onstage to compete for the chance to be named Checker of the Year in Foodstuffs North Island’s annual competition.

The heats were held in Auckland Central and South regions at the Vodafone Events Centre on 4 and 5 July, and in the Auckland North region at the QBE Stadium Function Centre on 10 July.

The checkers were judged by a team of eight senior Foodstuffs staff on their speed, presentation, customer service and accuracy as they scanned 30 items as quickly as possible, while also staying friendly and composed.

The top three checkers from Auckland Central were Mels Tautaina from New World Eastridge in first place, Gurwinder Kaur from New World Howick in second place, and Joshua Brickel from Pak’nSave Sylvia Park in third.

The top three checkers from Auckland South were Emma Cleary from New World Botany in first place, Sam Gray from Pak’nSave Pukekohe in second place, and Philip Johnstone from New World Papakura in third.

Foodstuffs North Island CEO Chris Quin said the company has run its Checker of the Year competition for decades, and it is an annual highlight for staff right across the business.

“Our checkers are the face of our business and their customer service skills are crucial to our success in meeting the expectations of our customers. The

annual Checker of the Year competition is about acknowledging their skills and creating some friendly rivalry between stores,” he said.

While the competition is taken seriously by the competitors, the event also provides an opportunity for them and their supporters to have some fun.

With a ‘rock star’ theme this year, competitors’ colleagues, family and friends donned rock star outfits and cheered them on with banners, chants and store mascots.

Each regional winner will be mystery shopped three times between August and November to determine the overall North Island Checker of the Year winner and two runners-up, which will be announced at the Foodstuffs North Island Excellence Awards in November.

Starbucks shuts up shop for good T

he store shut its doors for the final time yesterday. A sign in the window read: “All good things must come to an end...and so it is for our Botany Town Centre store.

“We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and for being part of the journey with us. We hope you will enjoy the Starbucks Experience in our other Auckland stores, the closest located at Sylvia Park.”

The owners Restaurant Brands New Zealand (RBD) - a NZ stock exchange listed company - has not responded to requests for comment.

RBD specialises in managing multi-site branded food retail chains, the NZX says.As at February 2011, NZX says, RBD has 208 stores: 89 KFC, 82 Pizza Hut and 37 Starbucks stores.

The most recent financial results suggest the Starbucks figure is 23 which takes into account the closure of the Botany store.

RBD employs more than 4500 staff and every day serves more than 60,000 customers throughout New Zealand.

In the financial year to February 27, 2017 New Zealand operations delivered their “best ever” overall sales and profit performance, strong trading from the KFC Australian business under its new Restaurant Brands’ ownership and

With the Aotea Square closure store numbers are now 24, the results say.

“With the 20th anniversary of the

first store opening in the country coming up next year the company is in discussions with the franchisor on potential franchise renewal options.”

Botany Town Centre told the Times it was limited with what it could share.

“Twelve months or so ago we renewed some leases on shorter terms than usual anticipating possible development. Starbucks was one of these,” town centre management said.

“In line with (shopping centre owner) AMP’s long-term master plan for Botany Town Centre, we are committed to maintaining a high-quality trading environment for the benefit of both retailers and customers.

“As part of this programme, the centre is commencing civil works in the car park outside the Conservatory entrance.”

Management confirmed there are likely to be some relocations pending development.

The civil works start on July 18 and are expected to be completed mid-September.

“Starbucks has been a part of our community for a very long time, a loyal and popular retailer and we will miss their presence in the centre,” management said.

“There are a number of other coffee shops around the centre for our customers to enjoy.”

In a social experiment, Member of Parliament for Botany Jami-Lee Ross experienced what it was to be hard of hearing when the Times conducted an interview with him on Monday evening with him wearing hearing protectors.

The idea behind the Silent Leadership Challenge is to make people more aware of how difficult it is for those living with the invisible disability.

The Times in partnership with the National Foundation for the Deaf decided to tackle three communication challenges to help address noise induced hearing loss and better understand work colleagues wearing hearing aids.

As part of the experiment Mr Ross wore bright yellow hearing protectors to stimulate deafness.

“My voice resounds in the headphones and I find it difficult to catch what you

are saying sometimes. I can understand how difficult it must be at a more crowded place when people are talking simultaneously,” he said.

According to the Listen Hear! New Zealand report released this year there are 880,350 people living with hearing loss in New Zealand.

On Friday, August 4 there will be a nationwide movement of corporate and community leaders making a difference for the one in six new Zealanders who have hearing loss.

The Silent Leadership Challenge offers a fun and collaborative individual/ team event with an important social message.

The Winning Edge — Excellence in creative colour and hair design

Known for their skill, flair and their determination to succeed, three hairstylists from Schnips PHd, two from the Manukau branch and one from the Botany Salon have made national news.

Bethany Lane Noa is a seasoned pro when it comes to hairdressing and when it comes to winning hairdesign awards as well. This year will be the third time Bethany has made it into the finals for the New Zealand Colorzoom Global Creative Artist. Last year, she was the overall winner for New Zealand and went on to represent the country at the global grand finals which were in Sweden.

She says that was an absolutely awesome experience and she hopes to do as well again this year but remains humble about her achievements. “I’m nervous and I’m excited if I manage to get through to the Global Goldwell competition finals again but it would also be great if someone else from Schnips PHd was to get through,” said Bethany.

“It was a bit of a shock for me, achieving a national finalist place again this year, it’s always an honour and a privilege to be nominated. I really love the Goldwell colours we’re using in our Salons, and I definitely think they’re the best colours for all of our clients.”

Bethany, Nina and Keila’s competition photos have been sent to Germany for judging, and a finalist from each country will be chosen to go on to compete in Barcelona at the Global Finals later this year. Bethany is always wanting to hone her creative skills and entering these photographic competitions allows her to do that.

“It’s also really about trying to inspire my clients; many who have been with me for twenty years now.”

She credits the amazing support from the owners of Schnips PHd – (Paul, Natalee and Clive) for her success and she believes that working at the Manukau salon she is immersed in an environment where she’s constantly growing and refining her craft, and learning from those around her. “Lynette John, Huia Smith and Leonie Nicholls really inspired my journey to excellence at Schnips PHd. We have a good vibe in the salon, our hairdressers are always pushing forward in to order evolve.”

The theme/inspiration for the Colorzoom competition was called In-Flux, this involved dark, elegant colours coalesce with mysterious iridescence, creating a new interplay of colours in the hair.

Keila-Marie Robinson remembers going to hair salons with her mum as a child, and being fascinated by the hairdressing magazines there.

Fast forward a few years and Keila’s hairdressing dreams have come true, the Schnips PHd colour technician is now a New Zealand finalist for the 2017 Goldwell Global New Talent. It was a surprise for Keila to achieve this result because it was her very first photographic hairdressing competition. She modelled last year for Bethany Lane Noa, which inspired her to enter the competition with a model of her own this year.

She had the only male model in the competition photo shoot, and remembers feeling a little intimidated by the strong competition that she was up against. “I was quite nervous, it felt like the other competing stylists knew what they were doing, I just stood there with my tail between my legs,” said Keila, “though I suppose, in the end I kind of ‘nailed it’ This hard-working colourist certainly made her salon and family proud with her interpretation of In-Flux and with her national finalist award.

“I have wanted to be a hairdresser since I was a little girl, my family wanted me to do teaching and stuff like that but I think I’ve shown them that I really love this profession and I’ve achieved many things along the way.”

This South Auckland local never thought someone from her background would achieve this level of success but Keila says “I have learnt that with a lot of hard work, support and determination we can all do whatever we want to aim for.”

Keila plans on staying with Schnips PHd for the rest of her career and is totally confident she’ll build a happy and loyal clientele there. “I believe we have the best quality stylists working here, all with a very high level of skill and experience.”

If she wins the New Zealand final, she will travel to Barcelona, Spain to compete in the international finals event. “Knowing you would be going up against the rest of the world, representing New Zealand, must be the best experience ever.”

It was the stunning blues, purples and turquoise with flashes of pink glistening on a paua shell sitting on her kitchen bench that caught her eye and imagination and gave Nina Williams inspiration for her dramatic creation – which she entered into this year’s Colorzoom Photographic competition.

Nina who participated in the Global New Talent category, for young stylists, (with less than five years experience) said she couldn’t believe it when she heard that she was a national finalist.

Though Nina personally veers towards a more feminine look, for this event she opted for a dark, mysterious iridescence, creating a clever interplay of colours within the overall style.

“I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that I was a New Zealand finalist,” said Nina who in the past had also been a L’Oreal Colour Trophy finalist.

“The final NZ winner gets to go to Barcelona and I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she said excitedly, talking about the results that will be announced on August 14.

“At the international contest everyone has to recreate the photographic entry on a model, live on stage, so I guess I would be in a totally different zone if I got to compete over there,” said the friendly and vivacious hairstylist.

Nina can’t wait to compete with the best on the world stage at this huge hair dressing competition, and says she could not have got this far, a NZ finalist without the support of Schnips PHd. “The team I work with here in Botany are all so supportive and are just amazing to work with. It is such a good atmosphere to work in.

“I started at Schnips PHd less than a year ago and since then I’ve had so many opportunities which have allowed me to grow and progress faster than in any other salon I’ve worked at. I’ve quickly become a busy stylist and every week my clientele keeps on growing.”

Maori Party announces first Asian candidate Wetex Kang of Malay and Chinese descent has been selected as the Maori Party candidate for the Botany electorate in this year’s general election.

“Our party believes in a fair, diverse and inclusive Aotearoa so we’re really excited about welcoming our first ever Asian candidate into our whare,” said Maori Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan.

“Wetex comes from a land and people who we as Maori share whakapapa with, so that in itself is something for us to celebrate.

“He’s also a highly intelligent and innovative young man passionate about the challenges and aspirations of not only our Asian whanaunga in this country but also tangata whenua.”

Kang holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (with Honours) from the University of Otago and received his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Guidance Studies) and Graduate Diploma in Science (Psychology) from Massey University.

“I’m excited to be the Maori Party’s first ever Asian candidate.

This candidacy symbolises a historical moment where the tangata whenua of Aotearoa can formally express manaakitanga, aroha, hospitality, generosity and mutual respect to all immigrants who’ve arrived in this beautiful land since the 1800s,” said Kang.

Botany is an ethnically diverse electorate where 39 per cent of the electorate are Asians, he said.

“Cultural integration is a priority within this electorate so the current Botany MP cannot possibly be a voice for our people because he can’t communicate efficiently with many of them from both a language and cultural standpoint.”

Kang is fluent in three Chinese dialects and understands Malay.

“My goal is to be the true voice of Botany not via a translator,” he said.

“My campaign will focus on immigration, cultural integration, law and order, green energy and health.”

Kang is an ex-pharmacist and nutritionist with 20 years’ experience in the health and wellness industry. He currently runs a beekeeping and queenbreeding company with a community education focus.

Botany Downs win Stage Challenge B

otany Downs Secondary College has taken out first place in the Stage Challenge RAW Division with their performance Endangered species.

The Stage Challenge is New Zealand’s largest and longestrunning youth performing arts event.

Macleans College took third place.

Botany Downs Secondary College’s performance at the ASB Theatre at Aotea Centre last week focused on the “devastating reasons that many animals are endangered”.

The main issues covered in their piece included pollution, the evergrowing human population and the destruction of their natural habitats.

“Botany Downs Secondary College really wowed the crowd with their moving piece on extinction,” said event manager

Olivia Kinane.

Mighty Lions provided true test U

nlike droll All Blacks coach Steve Hansen I can think of far worse fates than kissing my sister, which was his reaction to the drawn rugby series result against the British and Irish Lions at Eden Park on Saturday night.

However her response to kissing an ageing, wrinkly brother might be different.

The 15-all draw was a thriller, even if French referee Romain Poite did a Rainbow Warrior sabotage on a likely victory by reneging on his original decision to award a penalty against Lions hooker Ken Owens’ offside.

In fact it was a double whammy; for had Poite not blown his whistle, Anton Lienert-Brown would have scored the winning try.

It was to Hansen’s credit he didn’t whinge. And why would he want to rob joyous Lions fans celebrating their team’s shared success in completing a tour Graham Henry predicted would be suicidal?

In truth, the Lions and harassed coach Warren Gatland were far better than their critics predicted. And if part of their plan was to slow the game down and stretch the offside law, their rushed defence stymied many an attack from the men in black.

Natasha Unkovich, 23, was crowned the winner at a ceremony held at the Bruce Mason Centre last Saturday after weeks of fundraising and campaigning for votes.

Miss Unkovich, who also won the People’s Choice award, said the win was a “total surprise”.

“There was definitely nerves...I went in with no expectations and it was just nice to be able to showcase everything we’d been working on.”

The Bucklands Beach Intermediate teacher said some of the highlights of the journey were getting involved with the Ronald McDonald House charity and being able to share her journey with her students.

Miss Unkovich will now go onto compete in Miss World New Zealand which takes place around the middle of next year – but preparations begin early on in February.

auline Abbott is reflecting on the changing times she has witnessed in the southeast real estate market over the past half a century.

On Monday this week she celebrated 50 years working with P&H (Pakuranga & Howick) Realty. She started work in Pakuranga the day decimal currency was introduced to Kiwis.

“I was living in Ellerslie and was working with another real estate company. I thought it would be nice to get a job out this way,” she says.

Just three people worked in the Pakuranga office in those days where she was receptionist – in the iconic hyperbolic paraboloid building established by former Manukau City mayor, the late Sir Lloyd Elsmore, at the fledgling Pakuranga Town Centre.

It was the start of development of suburban Pakuranga. Until then only sections were being sold and some building contracts had been let to companies such as Dempsey Morton and Neil Homes.

After six months, Mrs Abbott says, “we sold our first secondhand house and things went from there”.

In 1992 she became a sales person and for 26 years sold property from the Pakuranga office.

“Those were the days when you could pick up a section for $10,800 right on the water,” she says. “We saw huge growth in that period – it was a changing era.”

“The rentals flowed into sales – it was an exciting time for all of us,” she says. “In latter times many Asian people arrived in the area and there was another change to the market.

“Ron helped me a great deal.

Housing product Shadowclad may face legal action Howick Ward residents with houses built within the past 15 years clad with exterior Shadowclad plywood panels are being advised to register their interest for a proposed class action.

Law firm Adina Thorn is calling for registrations from property owners whether or not there have been problems or issues with their buildings.

The Ministry of Education brought a legal proceeding against the product manufacturer Carter Holt Harvey alleging that Shadowclad used in some school buildings was defective. However the law firm believes the issue may extend beyond school buildings to homes and commercial buildings that contain the product.

If there is sufficient interest from owners with viable claims, the law firm will seek compensation from the

manufacturer through a class action which it expects to be fully funded. This means there is no cost for registering or at any stage of the action.

“His thing was making sure everyone was happy and it flowed through the company. He was always good to me.”

Mrs Abbott worked through the multiple listing bureau system when listings were delivered by courier every day.

When computers came in, everything became websitedriven and ways of doing business changed.

“I wouldn’t say the market is any better,” she says.

“The newer people still have to learn to go back to basics. I never had a desire to move on – I always felt very comfortable here.”

Mrs Abbott has worked at the company’s Botany office for the past two years and relinquished her sales person certificate this year. For the past 18 months she has worked in the company’s trust department.

“I loved the selling,” she says.

“It was really great to put people into great homes.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have worked with so many fantastic people over 50 years. And I appreciate the fact that Ron and company manager, Marie-Claire [Lamb] have put their faith in me.”

Husband Graham, a retired police officer of 26 years, and Mrs Abbott, bought their first property in Pakuranga in 1978.

Now, having decided to finish up on her 50th anniversary at the real estate company, Mrs Abbott is going to join her husband in retirement at their home in rural Patumahoe, although she will still do two-and-a-half days a week in the trust department.

Meantime she intends to “blob out” until Christmas. The couple will do “a bit of travelling” and establish a new garden.

“We might join a garden club.

It will be a change of lifestyle.”

he piles are driven and the floor slab is due to be laid this week for a building to house a comprehensive primary medical care complex and provide a corner anchor for the planned Pakuranga Town Centre re-development.

Pakuranga Medical Centre staff had barely settled into their premises in William Roberts Road close to 10 years ago when the news came that the building would need to be demolished to make way for the Reeves Road flyover, part of AMETI (the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative). It was only three months after three Pakuranga GP practices had merged and settled into their building.

“We initially waited asking ‘is this going to happen’?” director/ GP Dr Eileen Sables says. “AMETI was on and then it was off. We never really knew when anything would happen. As it happens we had outgrown the premises anyway.”

Four-and-a-half years ago, planning for a new complex started in earnest when the medical centre called in primary care project services and health planning company Medispace. A site owned by Auckland Council and Auckland Transport (AT) on Ti Rakau Drive was purchased.

The 2500 square metre double-storey building will be leased by the medical centre and a range of other health care providers. Tenants are expected to start moving in next August.

When AMETI is complete, access to the new centre will be from William Roberts Road which is planned to be extended to Ti Rakau Drive. Meantime access will be from Cortina Place at the back of the new building where parking is provided for 57 vehicles. Pedestrian access will be provided from Ti Rakau Drive for people using buses.

Roy Simmons, chief executive and project director of the Medispace Planning Team says it was important that the medical centre remained an integral part of the Pakuranga Town Centre.

Currently Pakuranga Medical

operates 15 consulting rooms while a pharmacy, physiotherapist and a blood test laboratory share the building. A dentist, radiology practice and a cafe will be added in the new building and other para-medical services are planned.

The medical practice rooms will be located on level one affording them considerable light along with privacy.

“We are more than doubling the space,” Mr Simmons says.

Currently the practice has 13,000 funded patients on its books with 11 GPs. Dr Sables says the team is looking forward to being able to offer more services, for example there are hopes to add nurseled clinics. One of the doctors, a specialist in travel medicine, will have more space.

“And we hope to attract more specialists, for example we hope to have an obstetrician.

“Everything in this concept is patient driven. People want to access lots of services in one stop. And we’d like to think our bespoke cafe will become a destination option,” she says.

“However we plan to stay a family general practice. There will be no overnight emergency services.”

The building has been designed to take into account future population growth in the area, Mr Simmons says.

“The design has been driven by the patient journey. It’s a model of care-driven design which is becoming the way forward for medical practices.

“It means patients will walk in the door to their doctors and have easy access to the other medical services.

For example, he says, because some people hate needles they may be tempted to avoid a drive to the blood test laboratory.

“If we have everything under one roof, we can drive better patient outcomes. We are passionate about this.

“We are putting all the professionals in the one place to keep people well.”

Dr Sables says the range of professional services working alongside each other means everyone learns from each other: “That can only benefit the

patients.”

General manager Dale Shepherd says everyone is looking forward to having more space.

“We currently have a work station in a cupboard so that someone else can use a doctor’s room on occasions. We want to offer more services to patients and we’re looking at the expected population growth and what requirements there will be, for example we will probably have more young families in the area which would give us a reason to add a midwife.”

So far more than 200 steel reinforced timber piles have been driven 12 metres deep into the site “so that the building will stand on a forest of trees”, Mr Simmons says.

Pakuranga was once covered in a low lying swamp that was drained and developed to create the landscape seen today. Until the 1950s the area was a sparsely settled farming community but in the following decade it was transformed into a new suburb.

Consequently the deep piles have been used to accommodate the high water table.

The town centre is shaped like a triangle and the master plan concept is designed to strengthen the corners and edges.

Auckland Council, Mr Simmons says, wanted a business to anchor the southern corner of the triangle.

It will be highly visible to local traffic bound for the Waipuna Bridge as well as to traffic going north on Ti Rakau Drive.

“It will define the beginning of the town centre re-development and the way things will progress in the future.”

The building is part of a ground-breaking trend, he says.

“It’s designed for modular care and is one of the first ones in the country to go down this track, 100 per cent based on patient modes.”

Fit-outs, he says, will give a consistent feel from a patient perspective, with consistent signage making it easy for patients to navigate the services in the building.

“Patients will notice the difference,” he says.

The New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded the Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club $ 2000 to hire professional trail builders to construct three new mountain bike trails in the Maraetai block of the Whitford Forest.

The bike club is excited about building mountain bike trails in the area which is currently being logged.

A professional trail-building company will build a two to three kilometre intermediate mountain bike track.

The Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club was formed in January 2010 by a group of local mountain bikers who were keen to develop decent mountain bike tracks in east Auckland and gain legal access to ride in the Whitford Forest, which is on private land.

Taking a brave leap into a marketing concept that positions bookkeepers as nurses, mopping the worried brow of business owners has won recognition for a local company.

At the New Zealand Bookkeepers Association conference, Number Nurses won the innovative marketing award for its quirky branding that shakes off dull images of administration work.

The franchise is owned by chartered accountant, Kirsten Hawke, who re-launched the business in August 2016.

The high-profile founder, Gayle Buchanan, died in 2015 and Ms Hawke was determined to continue her friend’s legacy.

High interest loans hitting community

Applying for these loans seems like the easy solution for struggling families, said Holyoake.

“If people are desperate to feed families, or pay other bills and they’ve got creditors hounding them on the phone wanting to pay, then they’ll do anything.”

People assume that in an area like Howick or Pakuranga, people aren’t struggling. The deprivation index puts Howick as a three, compared to Glen Innes which is the most deprived, at 10 on the scale.

But the increasing rents in this area are driving families to desperation.

“It’s not to buy TVs and things like that; it’s to put food on the table,” said Holyoake.

“At the beginning of the year we had one family not sending their child to school because they couldn’t afford the uniforms.”

Holyoake see’s people who are stuck in a vicious cycle of debt, and sometimes she doesn’t see a way out of it for them either.

She can recall sitting at her chair going over someone’s budget and realising there was no spare expenses available to pay back anything.

When a person can’t afford their weekly loan payment, they get a dishonour fee, they then get a dishonour fee from the bank as well, add in high interest rates to the mix and it’s a recipe for ongoing debt.

They then admitted some circumstances are unforeseeable.

“Whilst we go above and beyond to ensure a customer can afford to make repayments without creating hardship, some customers’ situations do change and, unfortunately, we can’t always foresee these events,” said Recordon.

Technology is also increasing hardships. Children require tablets for school, and items such as cell phones and internet are no longer a luxury.

Kay Read, the National Commissioner Service Delivery for WINZ , encourages those who are struggling for everyday basics to contact Work and Income first, before considering the loans with high rates.

“We have a range of assistance available and can help with a range of household expenses including food, medical, and dental needs, white ware products, glasses, and clothing,” said Read.

Holyoake does believe that Work and Income can help people with loans, but in some cases the money is taken from them later, making budgeting even harder.

“That (small loan) then gets deducted out of their benefit which means they have less money the next week,” said Holyoake.

Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting services have recently started an initiative called Moneymate in an attempt to educate the community.

It’s an eight week programme which educates people about what borrowing money involves, and how to budget and prepare for unforeseen expenses. It starts on July 27, from 10am-12 at the Pakuranga Library building.

If you are struggling for funds, organisations like NILS, Step Up, and Nga Tangata Microfinance offer loans that are low interest, or interest free.

L Holyoake has a bone to pick. As the service manager for Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting Services, she has been watching the new trend of high interest online loans financially ruining some of the community’s most vulnerable people.

People are going online to get small loans to cover things like groceries between pay cheques, and not realising how quickly it all adds up.

“The fact is a few hundred dollars turns into several hundred, and they’re struggling to pay it back,” said Holyoake.

“I don’t want to make out the people coming here are in the wrong, because they’re not, it’s just pressures of the way life is now. People get into debt.”

The Commerce Commission is currently investigating six online high-cost short term lenders, and is urging people to consider whether the terms are reasonable before applying.

“These investigations are at various stages and they focus on compliance with the lender responsibility principles,” the Commerce Commission said.

It’s not just single mothers, or people on the benefit getting caught out either. Holyoake has had couples with two incomes caught out by these schemes.

There’s an array of online finance companies now, where people can hit the internet and borrow money, and although there is a responsible lending code in place, it doesn’t seem to be helping.

“It feels as if there’s not as much checking done, because people are getting loans and they can’t afford them, they can’t repay them and it’s really high interest rates, up to 700 per cent sometimes,” said Holyoake.

Just Cash says on their website that you can get a loan of up to $1000 in less than four minutes.

There is no interest on your first loan, and you’ll have 45 days to pay back $1573. Once you have applied for your first loan, you can apply for a second via text.

On Moola, you can apply for a loan even if you have bad credit history, with a 547.5 per cent annual interest rate on a short term loan.

Samuel MacKay has competed in taekwondo since he was 12-years-old.

Now, he’s off to the Taekwondo International Championships, held in Ireland from October 9-15, as a New Zealand representative in the under-18 category.

Despite turning 18 later in January, the Beachlands resident qualified for the under-18 team at the time of qualification, which was the beginning of January.

Alongside his taekwondo achievements, Samuel is enrolled in his first year of engineering studies at AUT University, maintains a part-time job to raise money for sporting trips and is a cellist in the Auckland Youth Orchestra.

He picked up the sport when he was eight years old, thinking it would be “cool to try”, and a decade on, he’s stepping onto the world stage to compete against the best in the sport.

“Taekwondo has been something that has not only kept me fit, but has been an amazing discipline, helping with all aspects of life,” he said.

“It is an honour to be selected in the New Zealand team and this opportunity will be an amazing experience for me. I have already learnt so much. It means so much to me to represent my country in the sport that I love.”

Drop in house price expectations P

roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says the latest Institute poll confirms recent figures from REINZ and Barfoot and Thompson and shows that there has been a big drop in the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months.

According to the regular poll, which is commissioned by the Institute, the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months is down to 43 per cent, the lowest level since the poll started in November last year.

Mr Church says a definite trend appears to be developing, with more people becoming less bullish about house prices.

“Our June poll shows that the number of people expecting house prices to increase in the next six months has dropped 12 per cent since our last poll in April and now sits at 40 per cent,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the number of people expecting prices to stabilise is up 4 per cent to 40 per cent.”

“The number of people expecting a decrease in house prices is up 5 per cent to 12 per cent - a big jump in one month to be sure - but an indicator that the vast majority still aren’t

buying into the idea of a market correction”.

Mr Church says the trend becomes more pronounced when the latest results are compared against the first Institute poll, taken in November of 2016.

“Back in November 56 per cent of people polled were expecting house prices to keep rising – which means we’ve seen a 13 per cent drop in expectations in the past eight months.”

The poll shows that women are more likely than men to expect prices to stay the same (46 per cent v 34 per cent), and fewer women than men think prices will keep rising (38 per cent vs 50 per cent). The expectation of house price increases is also considerably lower in Auckland and Wellington (both at 37 per cent) than in other parts of the country – with 53 per cent in Wellington, 50 per cent in towns and 47 per cent in provincial cities still expecting continuing price increases.

Politically, Labour voters are most likely to pick increasing house prices (54 per cent) with National supporters least likely to pick rising prices (34 per cent). New Zealand First voters are most likely to pick a decrease (25 per cent) while those who vote

National are most likely to pick a stabilisation in house prices (52 per cent).

Biggest Impact:

The Institute survey also asked respondents who they thought were responsible for having the biggest impact on property prices, and once again foreign investors have topped the list, with developers coming second and local investors coming third.

Mr Church says that the survey confirms the view of the Institute that the ‘artificial

downturn’ engineered by the Reserve Bank has worked.

“There’s no question that the imposition of high LVR restrictions has affected the ability of the market to operate and has dramatically slowed the market – particularly in Auckland. What’s less clear is what the impact of that will be on supply given that Auckland still has a serious housing shortage and no clear solutions to reduce that deficit.”

Mr Church says that rationing of finance, by

“There’s no shortage of demand – there’s just a shortage of money.”

Mr Church says that this is probably best exemplified in the survey result showing that 18 to 30-year-olds are the most likely group to expect continuing house price inflation (58 per cent).

“This is incredibly sad because these are the same people who are most disadvantaged by the current slew of policies. They’re the people who, in many cases,

can’t get into the market because of the new rules.”

Mr Church says that he expects the deterioration in house price inflation expectations to continue over the next few months.

“You can’t artificially constrain house prices forever when you have a shortage of homes – but clearly you can do it for a while – so there’s a reasonable chance that the number of people expecting prices to stay the same will exceed those who think prices to rise, by the time of the next survey.”

“It was also closed off from the dining room by a wall and a door, which made it feel quite confined. We had this wall removed and it really opened up and lightened the space. The result was a really smart and modern open plan living area with an excellent flow.”

Megan and her clients, the Clarks, were all thrilled with the outcome. They decided to stick to the original white theme with white glossy floor cabinets (Jag Acrylic Arctic White) and a white engineered stone bench. Contrasting colours were introduced with the island bench and tall cabinets in a dark wood colour (Melteca Burnished Wood) and the laminate floors in a medium brown colour.

“It all tones in well and has a very warm ambience with a feature window below the bench height bringing in natural light.” Megan adds.

Fox qualifies for British Open R

yan Fox has finished tied fourth at the Irish Open overnight to qualify for The Open Championship in two weeks time.

The Beachlands local joins Michael Hendry in qualifying for the year’s third major championship to make it two Kiwis in the field at Royal Birkdale.

The third ranked Kiwi carded a final round four-under 68 to finish on 17-under for the tournament, seven shots behind dominant winner, Jon Rahm of Spain who recorded an impressive four eagles throughout the week.

There were three qualifying spots available and with Rahm already locked in for the 146thOpen Championship, Fox secured one of the three places after missing out by one shot on two different occasions.

Fox, the son of All Blacks great and current All Blacks selector Grant Fox, told the Times of his elation finally nailing his Open Championship spot.

“Obviously it’s been a great two weeks…secured a tour card for next year and having just missed out on an Open spot last week it was nice to get some redemption this week,” he said.

In a press release, Fox said he was ecstatic.

week,” said Fox. “It was a great golf course this week and a lot of fun to play. I’m sure Birkdale might play a bit tougher than what we’ve got this week. I haven’t played a lot of links golf in my career, I managed to play an Open at St Andrews a couple of years ago and I loved the

experience of playing links golf. I’m looking forward to the opportunity again.”

With rounds of 67, 66,70 and 68, Fox earnt NZ$425,774 this weekend to make for an exceptional two weeks on tour after his top five finish last week to pocket NZ$812,454 in just two weeks.

Not only does the last two events significantly help Fox’s bank balance, the 30-year-old more importantly continues to climb up the Race to Dubai standings to now sit comfortably inside the top 100 to be in 28th place and ever closer to securing his European Tour card for another season.

The exciting Rolex Series continues for Fox with the Scottish Open proving to be the perfect warm up event for the Claret Jug next week.

However, players won’t be treating it as a warm up with there once again being a mammoth $7,000,000 USD on the line.

Danny Lee has finished in a tie for ninth at the Greenbrier Classic on the PGA Tour but sadly couldn’t join Fox to claim one of four qualifying spots for The Open.

Lee, who was the defending champion at the Greenbrier Classic recorded rounds of 64, 68, 70 and 69 to finish six shots behind leader Sebastian Munoz.

Lee has returned to similar form which saw him inside top 50 in the world rankings last year with his recent nine finishes reading T14, cut, T5, 6, T49, T47, T3, T22 and T9.

The Rotorua professional has one final chance to qualify for The Open at next week’s John Deere Classic.
