Former councillor Logan Carr dies

A

50-year-old male man was killed on Monday after a car smashed into his car whilst he and two other vehicles were waiting at a red light at Botany on Monday.

The crash involved four vehicles. Three cars were stationary at the intersection of Botany Road and Ti Rakau Drive waiting to turn right.

The fourth car collided with the third car, in turn shunting all three vehicles forward.

Police have confirmed a 50-year-old man died in the crash at the intersection of Botany Rd and Ti Rakau Drive just after 5pm.

“We are not able to release his name until next of kin have been informed,” a police spokesman said.

“No charges have been laid at this stage as the investigation into the crash is still currently ongoing.”

Another driver involved in the incident remains in hospital.

Police are appealing for any witnesses of a vehicle involved in the fatal crash.

Elder statesman Logan Turnbull Carr died this month aged 93.

Carr, born on April 20, 1925, passed away peacefully on January 1. A service was held on January 16 at the Clevedon Presbyterian Church.

Carr, after whom Logan Carr Reserve (linking Kilkenny Drive to Botany Town Centre) is named, was founder and managing director of a group of private companies which he sold to overseas interests in mid-1987.

He served as a councillor for 24 years and chaired the Manukau Transition Committee at the time of amalgamation. He served more than 16 years as lead Planning Commissioner for Manukau City and 12 years as a list Commissioner for the Auckland Regional Council.

He was a member of the Regional Funding Committee, set up by Auckland City and a trustee in the Manukau Beautification Trust.

He is husband of the late Marie, father and father-in-law of Anne and Paul, and John, grandfather of Philippa, Timothy, Hannah and Elizabeth and great-grandfather of Cameron, Hunter and Scott.

Art explores cultural identity and sexuality ■■By Farida Master

ildungsroman is a rather unusual title for a first solo exhibition at Uxbridge, Malcolm Smith Gallery.

Areez Katki says he likes the sound of it. “I’ve always liked the word and really wanted to work with Bildungsroman as the format and possibly part of a working title for this exhibition.

“As a narrative trope it refers to the formation and development of identities from two perspectives,” he says.

A Bildungsroman is the growing up or ‘coming of age’ of a sensitive person who goes in search of answers to life’s questions with the expectation that these will result in gaining experience of the world.

Areez has crossed boundaries creatively and literally as he took off on a soul-searching journey across countries researching his cultural identity and sexuality.

A New Zealand Zoroastrian (one of

the world’s most ancient religions) by birth, the 29-year-old artist is excited to have his first solo exhibition titled Bildungsroman—Parsi Diaspora and the consolidation of identities from February 4-March 17.

Parsis are Zoroastrians from Persia who found refuge in India during the Arab invasion of 636–651 AD. “I wanted to research my cultural identity – the gamut of socio-economic and gender – a whole rainbow of issues,” says Areez, who graduated from the University of Auckland in art history, english literature and philosophy.

“I am willing to share my story of an immigrant with a level of cultural significance and also what it means to be a homosexual in New Zealand and in India.

“There have been a lot of limitations. I’ve had to struggle with being queer and a feminist,” he says.

A bubbling cauldron of emotions have found a positive focus as nine months of hard labour found him

meticulously find artistic expression as he hand-embroidered a range of canvases, including the egalitarian tea towels.

A Creative NZ grant in January 2017 provided Areez an opportunity to research the visual and text-based content for his solo exhibition through pictorial elements using needlework based craft practices that were handed down to him from a series of lessons from the matriarch of the family.

Some of the evocative bead and needlework at the exhibition will showcase the spiritual practices of the Parsi community, their ritual, topography, architecture, archaeology and historic figures.

“I want people to admire the aesthetic aspect of the exhibition and question it—to engage with the work visually and look at the caption. Should they find it intriguing there will be texts to encompass the particular narrative thought.”

$100m contract for Eastern Busway construction signed T

he contract for the next $100 million construction stage of the Eastern Busway has officially been signed.

Last Thursday Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff joined Auckland Transport officials to sign the contract for the next stage of the project, which is a designated busway that will run between Panmure and Pakuranga.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says, “For too long we have underinvested in public transport for East Auckland. As the area has grown, the roads have become more congested without suitable alternative transport options.

“The $1.4 billion being invested in the Eastern Busway from Panmure to Botany helps rectify this. It will be transformational for the area.

“Using the busway and the new Panmure rail station, commuters will be able to travel from Botany

Safety first in water Think safety before you use your ‘water toys’ - that’s the plea from Auckland Maritime Police after an increase of people getting into difficulty in the water.

Maritime Police have rescued a number of people who have headed out on stand-up paddleboards, inflatable boats, kayaks and other selfpropelled water toys this summer.

One incident occured off Bucklands Beach last month.

Sergeant Garry Larsen says a lack of training in using these types of equipment and changeable weather conditions can leave people at significant risk.

“Boating, kayaking, swimming, diving and other water related activities are part of the New Zealand lifestyle but it’s imperative that people respect the water, and be more safety aware before they hit the sea .”

A recent incident that could have had a far worse outcome involved two inexperienced kayakers who were rescued after five hours at sea.

They were caught in an offshore breeze and outgoing tide.

After losing their paddle the couple floated 10 nautical miles from their starting point before being spotted by helicopter and rescued by the Police Maritime Unit.

There has also been an increase in incidents involving inflatable toys.

“Recently Maritime Police rescued nine young children who were on a large inflatable toy swan,” said Sergeant Larsen.

“They were unsure of the area of water and got caught in the strong current and were not able to make it to shore.

The incident happened on Sunday December 23 around 6pm.

The group went out on the inflatable swan from Buckland Beach and got caught in the tide.

They were aged between 10 to 16-years-old. A person onshore notified Auckland Maritime Police.

“We want people to have fun but we don’t want them to become drowning victims,” Sergeant Larsen said.

to Pakuranga represents $275 million in spending with around $700 million of the total project cost funded from the Regional Fuel Tax which has enabled construction to be brought forward,” said Phil Goff.

The Eastern Busway consists of several major pieces of infrastructure, including completing the

urban busway between Panmure and Botany; associated key stations at Pakuranga and Botany; the Reeves Road flyover at Pakuranga town centre; and new/improved pedestrian and cycle facilities.

A reduction in journey times and better accessibility to other parts of Auckland will improve the range of employment and leisure options for South-East Aucklanders.

These factors were included as part of a report showing that AMETI Eastern Busway will generate around $680M of additional GDP over a 40-year period.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford said “This project is a great example of central and local government working together through the 10-year Auckland Transport Alignment Project to unlock Auckland’s potential.

The contract being awarded means we are another step closer

to having a congestion-free network.”

Fulton Hogan, the New Zealand owned construction company, have been awarded the contract.

They have also recently been involved in other major infrastructure projects including Auckland Northern Corridor and SH16 Causeway upgrade.

Physical construction begins onsite in April and will take approximately two years. Parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road will be widened to create a dedicated, congestion-free busway, similar to the hugely popular Northern Busway on the North Shore.

Panmure Roundabout will be turned into a safer signalised intersection, there will be new cycle and walking paths, improved public spaces and reserves, a second bridge across Tamaki River and several intersection upgrades.

Let’s get moving ■ BY FARIDA MASTER If there is one question that locals have been asking, it is `what have our elected representatives at the Howick Local Board achieved in the last year?’

The last time we checked, Peter Young, Howick Local Board member for Botany, has been working hard at getting the community involved in a free fitness programme.

The Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Association that he founded last year to get local communities to integrate better, kick-started with a free workout programme on Saturday mornings at the Ormiston Activity Centre. Following which members got a chance to play badminton and table-tennis at a badminton court in East Tamaki.

Personal trainer Eric Wang, with the support of fitness enthusiast Will Liu, got the adrenalin pumping as he created a well-designed wellness programme and gradually got more members of the community actively moving to his beat.

Young’s physical fitness programme for the community has gathered momentum at the onset of 2019. With medical sociolo-

gist, author and teacher at Botany Downs Secondary College Robert Bartholomew joining in as vicepresident of the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Association, Young has arranged for a free weight loss camp with trainer Jacques Bartholomew.

The camp will be held every Sunday from 7.30am-8.30am at the park near the Ormiston Activity Centre.

“Starting from Sunday February 3, we will begin a weight loss training camp, free of charge to promote health and wellbeing of our community. Those looking to lose fat and form healthy habits, be sure to come along,” says Young.

As part of the fitness regime there will also be a fun walk every Saturday from 8am-9am with Bartholomew. The locations will vary and will be announced in the newsletter.

The body training sessions will continue with Will Liu. They will be held on Fridays from 8.30am9am—instead of Saturday at the Ormiston Activity Centre.

Garden Festival’s tale of two gardens at Bucklands Beach ■■By Farida Master

A

garden should have an element of mystery. You should never be able to look at a garden in two minutes flat and walk away.

There should be perspective, where you find it disappearing and yet when you look around, you find an element of surprise.

So says Malcolm Hayward whose home is part of the Heroic Garden Festival tour on February 16 and 17 that features 28 diverse gardens across Auckland with six of them in east Auckland.

Malcolm says the property was a dumping site for building material debris when he bought the Bucklands Beach home in 2012. He started renovating and landscaping and has now been magically transformed into a Japanese-style courtyard garden.

A pathway lined with espaliered (trained to grow in a certain way) fruit and vegetable trees leads up to the spacious porch at the rear end of the house, overlooking an English meandering garden, with traces of Italian design.

Sitting proud in the centre of the courtyard is a formal water fountain that houses water plants, lilies and fish that have happily made the pond their home.

Malcolm, who converted a small cottage garden into a picture-perfect outdoor space, says that as well as the artistry, colour and texture, perspective is important in every garden.

Talking about the Japanese garden, he says he had a eureka moment when he decided to plant native New Zealand plants in a Japanese courtyard with a pond and fish.

The idea worked perfectly and now he finds himself every morning enjoying the play of light as he has his morning cup of coffee.

“The Japanese courtyard-style garden with its structure and serenity creates a different room in the garden,” he says.

The European style back yard is a perfect place for a garden party.

It’s a cool retreat with plenty of different points of interest and more than 100 shades of green, a perfect contrast to the garden in the front.

An English statue surrounded by a burst of green, overlooks a glasshouse. As you step in the eclectic green space, there are aquariums with tropical fish and wind-sensitive plants that grab your attention.

The beautifully landscaped garden looks like an art canvas when the sun goes down and the mood lighting brings a warm glow to the garden filled with perennials, exotic flowing plants, rambling vines and manicured shrubs.

As part of the Heroic Garden Festival, Malcolm is happy to share his garden with strangers.

“I don’t mind opening my house up to keen gardeners since it is all for a good cause with the proceeds donated to Mercy Hospice,” he says.

aint Kentigern College student Andrew Chen has achieved the maximum score in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma examinations.

Chen, 2018 graduate and IB Dux, scored the highest possible score of 45 out of 45 points, the first Saint Kentigern student to do so.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Andrew, who joins five other students in New Zealand who were awarded full marks last year,” a St Kentigern College spokesperson said.

“He is now one of 327 students to be awarded 45 points, out of more than 181,000 students from 3200 schools in more than 150 countries, who completed the diploma assessment in 16 languages across the globe during 2018.

“This places him in the top 0.18 per cent worldwide. We are very proud of Andrew!”

Chen joined the College in 2014 as a Year 9 student and quickly distinguished himself as an outstanding academic student. He was the Dux of Middle School in 2015, 1st in Year 11, 1st in Year 12 IB Diploma and then went on to be named the IB Diploma Dux in his final year.

He has proved to be an exceptional mathematician who has come first in every New Zealandwide mathematics competition

over the past four years. As a Year 11 student, Chen was awarded the NZQA Scholarship Top Subject Scholar award for Statistics and also gained a Scholarship in Calculus. These are exams usually taken at Year 13.

Whilst offered a University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship, Andrew cast his net wider, firstly being offered a place with a scholarship to Sydney University.

It was a chance of an interview at Oxford University that changed that path. Chen flew to England with high hopes for two interviews with professors from two separate departments - and then waited nervously on return to finally hear that he has been accepted for a place at Oxford University.

He plans to study mathematics and computer science; a course with an intake of only 30 students worldwide every year.

Senior College Principal, Suzanne Winthrop said, ‘Each year, Saint Kentigern has reason to be proud of students who excel at the highest level in their fields of endeavour, from academic to sporting and artistic pursuits.

Once in a while, we have reason to be exceptionally proud. This is one of those occasions.”

In addition to Andrew’s achievement, a further five St Kents students achieved 40 points or higher

These high-ranking students join others from across New Zealand to attend a top scholars awards ceremony next month to acknowledge their achievements. These students represent about the top 6 per cent of IB Diploma graduates globally.

Last year, Saint Kentigern had 38 Year 13 students entered in the IB Diploma programme, who gained an average point score of 34. This compares with the world average of 28.58.

The art and culture scene is buzzing with the upcoming Auckland Fringe Festival in the month of February that precedes the Auckland Art Festival in March.

The emotional journey featuring whales, song and a touch of theatre magic is Navi Collaborative’s third original production— devised by the Navi core team through exploratory sessions with local artists and community members using provocation and play.

Set on the wild windswept shore of Whatipu, an immigrant to New Zealand digs her toes into the black sand of the long white cloud.

The story goes that Nina Johnson has come to the wilderness to reckon and

wrestle with her identity and the musical manifestation of who she truly is.

Far from the land of her birth, she encounters her dead relatives - a reunion she never expected and isn’t quite sure she wants.

She ventures to unearth the skeletons of her past so that she can move on to her future. Nina must face the past and embrace the tides to rediscover her song. (on) Whatipu is a very personal story for its creator Dawn Glover who emigrated from the US to New Zealand in 2013. Between 2015 and 2017 she lost her mother, her uncle, her grandmother and her father.

Crowds flock to polo charity event P

eople were out in force to support Auckland Polo Club’s Tiger Building Charity Day in Clevedon on Sunday.

Held for the 8th year, the annual event was a perfect opportunity for polo fans who couldn’t wait for February 19’s much-anticipated Land Rover NZ Polo Open to get a pre-polo open fix.

Around twenty-five teams played five different levels of polo and the highlight was the high goal competition. The final was held between PDL Senco and Tiger Building with PDL Senco coming out winners at 11-10.

There were fun family activities, fire brigade displays, raffle prizes, food and beverages and a postpolo auction.

All proceeds were in aid of the Clevedon Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Wilson preparing for World Summer Games A local athlete is preparing to compete at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 in Abu Dhabi in March.

The World Games will be the biggest sports and humanitarian event staged this year.

Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga athlete James Wilson in powerlifting is part of the New Zealand delegation, which includes 38 athletes with intellectual disabilities, five ‘Unified Partners’ (athletes without an intellectual disability), and 21 coaches, managers and support staff. The athletes will compete in swimming, athletics, bocce, equestrian, basketball, bowling, powerlifting and football.

The Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 will see more than 7000 athletes from 170 countries compete in a series of sports from March 14-21.

This is the first time the event has been held in the Middle East North Africa region and is the largest single event ever held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga chairperson Laurinne Laing said James is a dedicated athlete who has maintained a rigorous training programme and we know that he will represent his club and New Zealand well.

yman Healthcare is joining the electric car revolution by installing a fast-charging network at five of its Auckland villages and moving its fleet to electric vehicles.

Ryman, New Zealand’s largest retirement village operator, will install fast chargers at its Howick (Bruce McLaren Retirement Village on Chapel Rd), St Heliers, Greenlane and Orewa villages as part of New Zealand’s drive to cut carbon emissions by switching to electric cars.

The chargers will be available to residents and their families as well as staff and members of the public visiting the villages.

Ryman will also be switching its car fleet to electric vehicles and will be piloting car ride and sharing schemes for its residents.

Chief executive Gordon MacLeod said there was growing interest from residents in using electric cars and Ryman wanted to make sure it had a charging network in place to enable them to make the switch.

“A number of our residents have switched to electric cars and we want to make sure that we have a fast charging network to support them. We’re designing our new villages to incorporate charging points and the fast chargers will allow residents to top up with power quickly and conveniently.’’

Ryman Healhtcare’s network will begin at five Auckland villages.

Last year Ryman Healthcare signed up to the CEMARS carbon reduction scheme and has measured its carbon footprint across its village network.

Switching to an electric vehicle fleet is one of the measures planned to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

Ryman already used hybrid vehicles and moving to electric cars was a logical next step, Mr MacLeod said.

“We know the world is changing quickly and we want to make sure we’re adapting to use any

new technology that’s available to reduce our carbon footprint.

We think enabling the use of electric cars is a perfect way to do this.

We’ll trial the network at five of our Auckland villages before considering a further roll out to the rest of our villages in New Zealand and in Australia.’’

Ryman’s fast charging network was one of a number of schemes to win support from the Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable fund, which is a joint public and private sector initiative aimed at reducing emissions.

90 day trial needs to go

Be aware of the 90 day trial. I was unfairly treated. It happened to me.

I was harassed and intimidated.

This employer was treating other staff members with respect but not me. I was ignored and had no breaks and very late lunch breaks. They left me on my own in store with mo training or support.

I was also yelled at in front of customers. I was bullied and embarrassed. Then I was told to leave. They used some pathetic reason.

I have been employed as a hardworking mature person for 30 years or more and have never, never, ever been told to go. I’m one of many people treated like this. It’s about time us hardworking honest kiwis stood up for ourselves. I had a good case the authority said but my doctor warned me not to. My health wellbeing wouldn’t cope with it.

The 90 day trial is unfair and should go. The Government needs to talk to the public about this.

Stockade Hill Trig removal

In response to your article on the removal of the trig beacon from Stockade Hill (Times, January 24) and the explanation given for this by Land Information NZ (LINZ), I would like to point out the error in the second reason given that it was “to cooperate with the Auckland Council and Tupua Maunga in their plans to remove such beacons where possible to restore volcanic sites”.

In the original reply I received from LINZ they stated Stockade Hill was a Volcanic Cone, which it obviously is not – at least the geological society doesn’t list it as such.

However I note your article states ‘volcanic sites’ – as all of Auckland, in fact the whole of NZ, would fit this description then it is difficult to comprehend what LINZ is proposing. This is particularly relevant when the local iwi are proposing a zip line and gondola for Motutapu

On Saturday (January 19), I was going with my mother to get my eyes tested at Botany Town Centre – and you would have to be blind not to see that ad, which stated “ Tell Sugar To Get Fruct”.

I noticed this vulgar advert twice in the centre. This could easily be picked up by young audiences who may attempt to use the F-word as a result of this. It is very inappropriate due to this supposedly being a family-friendly environment.

I have sent this to the Advertising Standards Authority but have not yet received any response.

Daniel Revans (10) if LINZ replaced the Stockade Hill beacon with one of those it intends to remove from the actual volcanic cones. This would overcome the health and safety issue with rust stated as the primary cause for removal of the beacon.

There has been a trig beacon on Stockade Hill since 1936 and it marks the spot of not just the trig but the original survey point for the design and construction of the stockade in 1863.

So you would think that a little communication with the local community by the relevant authorities before any changes were made would have been appropriate.

Local footballer Arzan Todywalla has just returned from football trials in Australia.

Todywalla was in Melbourne for three days at the UK Football Trials Australia this month.

Arzan’s father Viraf saw the trials event on Facebook and since his son was on holiday from both Saint Kentigern College and Eastern Suburbs AFC, they decided to explore the opportunity.

Todywaller has travelled twice to UK for Birmingham City FC trials. “And if it wasn’t for his UK Passport issue, he would have been given scholarship and would be playing for Birmingham City Club,” said his dad.

Arzan was given a UK school brochure and five day trial invite in UK by Chris Woodburn, a referee at the trials and Director of UK Football Schools.

Woodburn said: “Arzan is good. Very good. There are handful of players that has got the attention of the coaches and scout Micky Adams and you are one of them. We will be sending a brief feedback of all the players to their respective parents in next two weeks but you (parents) should surely

ith nothing to brag about, the Black Caps’ first three ODI losses to the might of India, my focus in this column centres on the overwhelming dominance of tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Naomi Nasaka in the Australian Open at Melbourne.

With wiry Serb Djokovic and Spanish leftie Nadal annihilating allcomers, one of the great men’s finals was anticipated. Instead, Djokovic bolted home 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in 2 hours 4 minutes leaving the crowd and his opponent stunned by his peerless performances.

Moving past Roy Emerson and Roger Federer to become the first man to win seven Australian Opens, he has yet to lose a final in the Melbourne classic. It is impossible to recall anyone being so superior against a player of Nadal’s class and courage.

This from a man who, a year ago, had surgery done to a painful elbow that threatened to wreck his career whereas Nadal had an ankle operation in November.

Djokovic’s superiority was such that he struck 34 winners and made just nine unforced errors to ease past Pete Sampras for his 15th major.

he Marie Raos Ray White Howick Pakuranga Premier Men have qualified first in the Jeff Crowe Cup Limited Overs Cup and have a bye straight through to a home semi-final in two weeks time.

The home team was expecting a tough match against old rivals University, especially since University had being enjoying a run of high scores. University won the toss and batted first on a beautiful Lloyd Elsmore wicket made for batting and after 10 overs with University having posted 70 runs, it certainly looked as if the Alpacas were in for a long day.

However once the first breakthrough was made when Anand was dismissed for 46 and the second wicket fell one run later when Auckland Ace Finn Allen was removed for a duck, Howick Pakuranga’s bowlers began to pile on the pressure and,

apart from opener Beecroft who scored 51, University’s batsmen offered little resistance, bowled out for 161 in 34 overs. Adam Jones 4/18, Jamie Brown 3/19 and Bill Walsh 2/22 sent the opposing batsmen back to the pavilion in a procession.

Howick Pakuranga’s batting line up was never going to be challenged by this total and cruised to 162/3 in 30 overs.

Dan Young acted as the sheet anchor with 65 off 87 balls and was part of an 81 run partnership. David Winn looked very solid finishing of 37* at the end of the match.

Cameos of 23 off 24 balls from the bat of Dale Phillips and Brian Barnard’s 15* off 8 completed the score sheet.

Not only did the Premier Men make their One Day semifinal but the Marie Raos Ray White Premier Reserve Men also won its match against Takapuna to make the Reserve One Day final which is being played at Lloyd Elsmore on

Waitangi Day. A dominant batting performance resulted in a formidable 283/8 after 50 overs with Liam Winn scoring 68 and Josh McGregor 62. Openers Hamish Dickason (34) and Brandan Laurenzi 25 gave the side a good start with a 54-run partnership.

Takapuna put up a good effort at 120/2 and looking very likely to challenge the local lads’ score. There had been a number of near misses but finally Mike Rose took a key wicket and this was followed by a devastating spell from Taine Jolley who took two wickets in one over. From then on it was an uphill struggle for the Takapuna lads who fell behind the run rate and ended up 43 runs short. Jolley had a good day taking 4/43 and Matt Blandford supported him with 2/60. The two teams meet again in the final so the local lads have a real challenge on their hands.

mier Women completed the trifecta with two big wins in the T20 Pearl Dawson Trophy.

In the first match, the ladies restricted a strong Parnell side to 88/8 in its 20 overs with Alyssa Bowden 2/18, Rae Allright 2/11 and Lucy Western 3/17 sharing the wickets. Howick cruised to victory losing only two wickets in the process. Radhika Patel top scored with 44 and Skye Bowden was 24* at the end.

The second match against local rivals Papatoetoe was a much closer affair. Papatoetoe totaled 111/5 in its 20 overs.

Amberley Parr 2/22 was the most effective bowler. It took Howick Pakuranga 19.1 overs to pass this total with Skye Bowden 23, Lucy Western 20, Rewa Arora 25* and Holly Topp 23* all contributing to the win. When the match finished, Howick had reached 114/5. The result of these two victories has seen the women’s side move into second place on the points table.
