tarbucks is returning to Botany Town Centre in late autumn 2019.

Before closing its previous store, Starbucks was at the centre for 16 years as one of more than 20 stores around New Zealand. The new store at Botany will be the 23rd.

Charles Belcher, CEO of Starbucks in New Zealand, says Starbucks has deep roots in the Botany community.

The trees pose the greatest threat to dogs between summer and autumn, as the berries ripen and fall to the ground.

“The karaka tree has bright orange berries up to 4cm long, making it very distinctive. It can grow up to 15 metres and has thick dark leaves,” a council statement said.

“Residents should be aware that there may be karaka trees in their area and make use of alternative locations when walking dogs.

“Signs of karaka berry poisoning include confusion, weakness, vomiting, hind leg paralysis and convulsions.”

There can be a delay of 24-48 hours between berry consumption and symptoms.

“If you suspect your dog has ingested karaka berries, contact a vet immediately,” council said.

Dr Natalie Rogerson, from Sommerville Veterinary Centre in Howick underlined the importance of pet owners being vigilant and acting quickly.

“If an owner sees their pet chewing or eating a karaka berry, it is vital they take their dog straight to the vet.

The pet will not be showing any symptoms yet, but it is still imperative medical attention is sought,” she said.

“If the pet is brought to the vet within the first 1-2 hours of ingesting the berries, the veterinarian can induce vomiting. If successfully expelled from the system, generally no further treatment is required.”

Unfortunately, the symptoms can be numerous and varied, Dr Rogerson said.

“They can range from gastrointestinal – vomiting and diarrhoea to severe neurological signs – weakness, paralysis, seizures, even death.

“If there is any suspicion a dog has had access to karaka berries and is showing any of the above symptoms, a veterinary assessment is essential.

There is no antidote. Once symptoms develop, intensive supportive care is commenced.

“The prognosis is varied dependent on how much has been ingested, the size of the dog etc,” she said.

“This toxicity is life-threatening and the earlier treatment is commenced, the better the chance of a full recovery.”

Cloak of honour for Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams, principal of Pakuranga College, was pleasantly surprised by a special gift he recently received of a beautiful korowai by the family of Cark Taka.

A korowai is a Maori cloak, a symbol of prestige and honour. He proudly wore it for the Year 9 powhiri last week.

Cark is a student of Pakuranga College who received the Te Ramaroa Maori Leadership Award for Senior Male Maori Student in 2018.

The korowai was designed and made by Carl’s mother Shirley Chapman and the design incorporates the school emblem and the kapa haka uniform. Carl gathered the feathers himself from a farm in Maromaku.

The family also gifted a carved ceremonial staff to the school and this was used by the Head of Maori Department Heemi Gilbert for his address at the powhiri. It was made

by Carl’s father who also carved the plaque that currently sits above the doorway to the hall.

As the traditional garment has to be stored out of sunlight, the college is planning to have the korowai professionally photographed and framed with some information about the design and the donors.

e didn’t just open a can of worms, but a bag full of insect specimens, invertebrates and menacing traps.

Bug man Ruud Kleinpaste recently opened up a big bag of creepy crawlies at a teacher’s-only day at Owairoa Primary School.

The former host of TV series Buggin’ with Ruud on Animal Planet had flown in from Christchurch to orient the teachers on being ecological detectives.

Learning from nature is what we need to do if we want to rediscover the peace manual for planet earth said the self-confessed nature nerd.

He encouraged teachers to work with children to build a database of bugs, plants, skulls, poos and insects saying there is a big disconnect. He stressed the importance of connecting kids with nature in the age of texting.

“We are losing 150 species on the planet every day,” he said of the silence of the bugs.

Use prisoners to create some excitement he suggested. “Put daddy long-legs spider with a while tail spider and see who wins. It’s like a Gladiator game.”

Ruud shared some interesting fun facts as he spoke of robots on Mars being modelled on cockroaches.

“It’s all about bio-mimicry. While the human species has been on this earth only for 150,000 years, the evolution of the earth has been for millions of years. Organisms are spectacular. The leggy pests are being used as models for futuristic explorers on Mars,” said the passion-

“We got to teach children about ecosystems and food chains where everyone eats someone else. Dung removal is the most important work on the planet but not many know that dung is big resource. Ruud who has been talking to a group of schools in east Auckland suggested that teachers and students outline a patch in the school and try and identify different organisms and pollinators that visit the school grounds—thus creating strong connections between nature and children.

‘Our blissful family...was unprepared for such a tragedy’ The wife of the man who died in a fatal pile-up at a Botany intersection has sent a heartfelt thank you to those who donated money to the family.

Hua Yang said she and her family were completely unprepared for the tragedy of losing her husband, Zhengwen Alan Hu on January 28, Auckland Anniversary weekend.

Hu, 50, died when his car was struck by another vehicle while stopped at the traffic lights at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Botany road.

He left behind his wife, Yang and two young daughters.

mendous help to us as we try to navigate our lives from now, the kind messages have been a ray of light in our darkest hours. In the past few days, the messages, many from complete strangers, have moved us to tears. Everyone’s warm words and support has given us hope,” she says.

Yang wanted to ensure those who donated knew the money would be put to good use.

“We will use it with gratitude in our hearts and I try to repay everyone’s kindness by doing my best to raise our girls to be the most upstanding members of society.”

Local artist to teach art at Uxbridge

C

hildren’s musical theatre is a powerful art form that can transform children’s lives - and who should know that better than Susanne Dell and Lynette Leggett who have practically devoted their lives to helping children bring out the creative best in them on and off stage.

Sitting in their new spacious studio at 90 Springs Road, East Tamaki with ample space for dance, rehearsals, costumes and a grand piano, the women have been helping children and adults learn theatre craft.

They are visibly excited about the new premises of the Children’s Musical Theatre Studio.

“Though our home is Howick, and we’ve been operating from there for the last five years, we used to do only one production a year. Now that we’ve moved to East Tamaki which is quite a good hub, we will be working on four major productions a year.” Proudly pointing to the dance floor, frosted windows and the grand signage outside, Sue - a trained dancer who started teaching tap dancing when she was only 13 - says she has worked in theatre for more years than she can remember.

Lynette is a talented primary school music teacher with many years of musical direction and stage management who has returned from a sabbatical overseas in Mexico. Together they take immense pride in instilling confidence in children and seeing the magical transformation in them as they take the curtain call. “We make sure that in all our productions everyone has a chance to shine,” they say. Currently they are auditioning for the cast of upcoming productions, The Addams Family for 13-16-year-

olds, and the all-time favourite Disney’s High School Musical Jr., for 8-12-year-olds. With a cast of 20 for The Addams Family and 60 for Disney’s High School Musical Jr, they say that every child deserves to have an opportunity. “It gives us such a buzz to know that children develop singing, dancing and acting skills while making new friends and having fun on stage.”

Making sure that they start discovering the love for the performing arts from a very early age, the Dots for Tots class (from three months to four-

years-old) is for parents and babies to learn songs, dancing and the beat.

“Parents are the first learners,” says Lynette. “We give the parents a repertoire at home so that they can work with their child.” For preschoolers there is Tap for Tots – tap classes for two to four-year-olds. There’s even a seniors dance class for adults on Wednesdays from 11am to 12noon as well as age group choirs for five-year-olds who may be stage shy but are happy to be introduced to tools of musicianship.

A beloved local artist may be shutting down his studio for good, but budding artists won’t have to go far for his expertise.

Life is an artistic circle for Tony Clarke who is moving his classes back to Uxbridge Art and Culture Centre, where he first began his teaching career 19 years ago.

For the last 16 years he has worked out of his studio in Pakuranga, spending hours teaching hundreds of students and staging numerous student exhibitions.

You’ll be able to check out his classes at an open day at Uxbridge on Friday February 15.

Tony will be there painting and is looking forward to meeting art lovers and painters alike.

Tony teaches his students techniques to achieve the results they are looking for regardless of the genre and medium in which they choose to work.

Many hobby artists have been able to take their art to a new level under his guidance.

“A lot of people have been able to sell their work and many have won prizes in competitions,” he says.

From February 21 his classes will be on at Uxbridge every Thursday and Friday.

He hopes the friendly spirit and sense of community experienced at Ben Lomond Crescent will continue at Uxbridge.

Retired engineer and new student Ron Tucker says, “Tony has taught me a method with clearly defined steps that produce the fine detail that I was looking for in an art class. The friendly small group classes provide individual tuition in an enjoyable atmosphere”.

When Andrew is not busy lobbying Parliament on behalf of his Hunua constituents, the Royal Geographical Society Fellow is off conquering extreme challenges in other parts of the world.

In 2016 he and eldest son James trekked to the North Pole.

His latest adventure was a 20-day, 500km expedition on camels through the desert with second son Daniel, 21.

With their Bedouin guide Jali, they travelled most of the routes that British military officer Colonel T E Lawrence and members of the United Arab tribes followed in Jordan, including their epic journey to capture the port of Aqaba from Turkish forces in 1917. It was a strategic victory for the Allied Forces in World War I. Lawrence later wrote about his exploits in the memoir The Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Bayly had always been interested in Lawrence’s story and had read Pillars so when his

son suggested it would be a good adventure to retrace his route “it seemed like a good idea”.

It meant a trip as far removed from a New Zealand summer holiday as it’s possible to imagine.

As well as learning to ride camels – not easy when they trot because they don’t have stirrups – they had to travel light, sleep on the desert sand without a tent and eat traditional Bedouin food, including bread baked in the ashes of a fire.

And it seems not many people have done

Their plan was to do some original research on Lawrence by following some of his routes.

“Basically, no one has just got on a camel and followed Lawrence’s routes.

“The trip was a very personal thing involving Dan and I – and the time with Dan was probably the highlight – but it became evident pretty quickly that what we were proposing was quite something even for the Bedouins.

“None of the Bedouins could recall anyone attempting to ride 500km on camels.

“In many parts of Jordan and in the Middle East, not a lot of people ride camels now. It’s more a tourist thing.”

The Bedouins might have been impressed by the pair’s feat but “they called us crazy Kiwis,” Bayly says.

The Baylys had studied Lawrence’s exploits extensively before they left New Zealand.

They took with them copies of excerpts from The Seven Pillars of Wisdom and other books so when they got to various battle sites and places of significance, they could read what

had been written.

And having done the journey themselves, they uncovered some discrepancies about the distances Lawrence recorded and his descriptions of various battles.

Their findings sparked interest from the TE Lawrence Society, the Royal Geographical Society and academics at Oxford University when they visited on their way back to New Zealand.

Bayly says it was a fabulous trip and a great experience living in that environment.

“Jordan is a great country to visit. All the people of Jordan were incredibly friendly, but the Bedouins in particular are wonderful people.

“They have this tradition where someone can stay with them for three days and three nights and no questions are asked. So they won’t even ask you what your name is or what your purpose is. You can stay there as a right.

“No one asked me what I did (for a living) because there it doesn’t matter what you do it’s about what you’re like as a person. There’s something honest about that.”

Four playlets all in one California suite

HSC ready for next generation of fine young sailors H

owick Sailing Club has a long history of sailing tuition, and that legacy is set to continue with the launch of the club’s new fleet of Learn to Sail boats.

With the generous support of Howick Local Board, The Auckland Maritime Foundation, The Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate, NZCT and New Zealand Racing Board, the club has purchased eight new Optimist dinghies.

The new boats replace Howick’s old fleet of Optimist dinghies which have seen more than 20 years of service. The old fleet has been used to teach thousands of children to sail through the club’s Learn-to-Sail programme and Waterwise programmes.

The new boats have been sponsored by Hella Marine, Denham Bradwell lawyers and Howick Village Optometrists and can be seen off Howick beach most days during the summer months.

Additional boat sponsorship packages are available to interested local businesses.

With five productions lined up for the year, Howick Little Theatre’s 2019 opening offering is California Suite, written in 1976 by the prolific American playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon.

It comprises a set of four stories, all set in Suites 203-04 of The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

The opening playlet, Visitor from New York, is about a divorced Manhattan couple who meet up to discuss their teenaged daughter who has left her mother to live with her successful screenwriter father in LA. The bickering couple are forced to decide what living arrangements are best for their girl.

In the second, Visitors from Philadelphia, a Jewish husband awakens to discover a drunken prostitute in his bed.

With his wife en route to join him in LA, he’s faced with the dilemma of hiding all traces of his uncharacteristic indiscretion.

The Visitors from London features a first-time Academy Award nominee English actress Diana Nichol and her husband, Sidney.

She is in deep denial about the true nature of her marriage of convenience, and while preparing for her moment in the spotlight, her mood fluctuates between hope, panic and despair.

And finally, in Visitors from Chicago, while two affluent best-friend couples are on a much-needed vacation, an injury to one of them during a mixed doubles tennis match compromises their friendship.

Swapping suits for sneakers I

t’s time to dig out your running gear and swap your dress shoes for sneakers because the Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk is back.

Last year, more than 480 people took to the park for the annual event which is organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club.

With a choice of distances available for both individuals and teams, there’s something for everyone. There is now an added 1km walk option for those who would like to participate but can’t manage the bigger distances.

Entrants can choose to go it alone or in teams of four in a 5km walk, 5km run or 10km run on a stunning course beginning in Highbrook Park which is located at the end of Pukekiwiriki Place, off Kerwyn Avenue.

The event, now in its sixth year, draws hundreds of people from the surrounding businesses every year as they vie to claim the title of 2019 champion – all the while raising funds for a good cause.

While it’s aimed at businesses in the area, not working in Highbrook isn’t

a valid excuse. The event is open to everyone with entries just $20 per person. All proceeds from the event are donated to charities, with the majority of funds going towards a portable ultrasound machine for Middlemore Hospital’s maternity unit.

Last year’s event raised a whopping $22,000 through participants and sponsors, with a range of charities benefiting.

Held straight after work, the Fun Run and Walk is a great alternative to those standard after-work drinks – in fact, why not do both? After the exercise is done, hang around and recover with your team over a couple of drinks and a BBQ while enjoying the live entertainment on offer.

The Bucklands Beach Yacht Club one of New Zealand’s best loved yacht clubs is celebrating 70 years.

Bucklands Beach Yacht Club was officially formed back in 1949 by a few pioneering sailors looking for a base for their racing, although sailing and racing started off Bucklands Beach back in the early thirties.

The families in those days were not necessarily financially privileged but rather inspired to be creative and ingenious in supplying themselves a sea

worthy craft for family and neighbourhood enjoyment.

This fellowship still flourishes and has rubbed off through the generations of many sailors who sail from Bucklands Beach Yacht Club.

Fast forward 70 years and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club provide a diverse range of boating and social interests.

The club has its own marina and haul out facilities with a hardstand enabling members to perform maintenance on their own vessels.

It’s timely to write to you in the Botany Electorate about issues on the horizon, and some of the work I am doing on your behalf as your local MP.

A decade and a half ago when I was first elected to public office here in Howick, I became known for being a loud and unwavering advocate on local issues. I have been proud to be involved in achieving wins and fighting for local people. This is what still drives me to get up each morning.

My contract is with you as local constituents first and foremost, and should always trump any political party matters. I ask for the opportunity to prove my value to this local community again through the hard yards of being Botany’s voice and representative. I will front up to any group, large or small, to discuss local or national issues of the day, no matter how contentious.

As your MP I will be focussed on issues involving:

Turning words into action

As your elected representative I have been involved in issues like developing the Meadowlands Multisport Facility, funding the Star of the Sea building restoration, planning Barry Curtis Park and the Ormiston Town Centre developments, and pushing for the Eastern Busway, now under construction. Along with others in the community, these are the types of issues that first drew me to public service, and still motivate me to continue representing Botany today.

We are reaching the half way point of this term of government. Housing affordability, the need for more public transport and better roads, and the cost of living all still need addressing. The current government is saying all the right things, but little will change until we see words turn into action. We need more houses being built, we need to see transport investments start to pay dividends, and we cannot sit back silently while working parties propose new taxes or put new costs on New Zealanders.

Over the years my Electorate Office has also helped and supported thousands of constituents. Seeing a person’s life improve or change after we have been able to help is the most satisfying part of any MPs job. I have seen families reunited, urgent housing needs

Early learning centre at Mission Heights celebrates Chinese New Year T

he sound of beating drums filled the air at KiNZ Care and Early Learning Centre at Mission Heights as children, teachers, parents, families and specials guests gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The children had created beautiful craft work, sang songs and participated in the dragon dance to wish everyone good luck and prosperity. The dragon head was made with the help of the children from everyday material to showcase the centre’s sustainable practices.

Staff from the Auckland Kindergarten Association Executive Leadership team joined in the celebration.

The Chinese Community Group from Highland Park enchanted everyone with their bright traditional and colourful outfits and synchronised dancing movements. Children and families were tempted to join in the graceful dance.

No function in an early learning centre is complete without food and everyone enjoyed an array of tasty treats which showcased the diversity of Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland.

“At KiNZ Mission Heights every child’s culture and identity is celebrated which promotes children’s self-esteem and sets them up for a journey of lifelong learning on a positive note,” says centre manager Sangeeta Lal. Four-year-old Athaleyah Vaipulu summed the day by claiming that she really enjoyed watching the graceful dance movements while four year old Xuanpai Hong said he loved the food. Young Yaj Maharaj was inspired by the dragon dance and went home and made his own dragon head with the help of his family.

he latest Property Institute/ Valocity Regional Insights Report shows that the Auckland housing market continues to soften, while all the other major centres are either stable or experiencing price increases.

Nationally, the data shows a nationwide increase in median house prices year-on-year of 0.2 per cent, with a large 19.7 per cent drop in the number of properties being sold.

The figures show a median sales price nationally of $530,000.

Dunedin was the stand-out performer in terms of price gains, with a 12.9 per cent increase on median sales prices, followed by Wellington (+9.3%) Hawkes Bay (+7.8%) and Manawatu (+5.6%).

Auckland was the only centre

covered in the report that went negative, with a median sales price decrease of 5.1 per cent year-on-year.

Who is buying?

Nationwide, while the there is still an upward trend of new mortgage registrations to first home buyers, there is now evidence of a consistent increase in the number of people refinancing, with refinancers having the strongest upward trend compared to all registration types in the month of November.

When you look in to the certain regions across New Zealand, this is amplified.

Auckland:

The city of sails has seen a

decrease in the median sale price of 5.1% now sitting at $825,250.

With this negative trend, it indicates that this may be also affecting the number of mortgage registrations, with the only positive movement being First Home Buyers, up 7.4%.

With less competition from other buyer types, this seems to have created a gap in the market making it easier for first home buyers to enter.

Refinancers remain relatively stable, with a small negative movement of 0.1%.

This suggests it may be more difficult for borrowers to refinance their property due to a loss of equity associated with Auckland’s downward median price trend.

Record building consents show strong progress says Minister New statistics continue to show building consents for new dwellings at record-breaking levels, says Minister for Building and Construction Jenny Salesa.

The number of building consents for new dwellings in 2018 reached 32,996 – of these 21,125 were stand-alone homes, 3551 were apartments, 1829 were retirement village units and 6491 were town houses or home units.

Government-related building consents reached 1999, the highest number since 1978.

“Building consents for new dwellings have reached a 14-year high in the year ending December 2018 showing we are making significant progress as we get on with the job of building the houses New Zealanders need,”

In July 2018, the National Construction Pipeline Report showed a slower but longer construction forecast. For the first time since its inception, the report did not forecast a boom followed by a bust.

Instead, residential building value is expected to hold steady over the next six years, before increasing to a high of $26.6 billion in 2023. The report shows building consents for new dwellings will increase year-on-year to a high of 43,100 in 2023.

“The continued rise in building consents will bring more certainty to the construction sector and further confidence in the Government’s comprehensive housing plan,” says Salesa.

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club contests two more one-day finals I

t’s been a huge week for Howick with the premier reserve men and premier women both playing in Auckland finals following the premier men’s victory the previous week.

The Marie Raos Premier Reserve Men met Takapuna at Lloyd Elsmore on Waitangi Day and emerged narrow winners, despite appearing to be behind the eight ball for most of the match. No question this match kept a sizable crowd on the edge of its seats for the whole match. Put into bat on a greenish wicket, Howick’s batsmen found batting difficult and lost a wicket in the first over.

However Captain Sam Borland and Keiren Mackenzie steered the team into a sound position with a 65-run second wicket stand before Borland was dismissed for 43. MacKenzie and Cam Neal kept the run rate moving with a 40 run partnership and Josh McGregor continued to steady the innings with 30 but after Mackenzie was dismissed for 43 there was a mid-order collapse until Mike Rose came to wicket to partner McGregor, scoring an accomplished 36.

However once these two were sent back to the pavilion, the last three wickets fell in two overs and Howick’s 173 really did not look enough to stop a strong Takapuna side.

Michael Greenwood made an immediate breakthrough when Takapuna only had 9 on the board.

However life got a lot more difficult after that as Takapuna’s batsmen started to work their way towards a winning score. However after Takapuna had reached 70/1 and really looked to be cruising, the local bowlers started to tighten their lines and pressure the batsmen. Mackenzie took two wickets quickly and this was followed up by a fiery spell from pace man Taine Jolley who took a wicket with his second ball and finished with 2/24.

But the star of the show was Rowan Naude with his naggingly accurate off spinners. He took 4/17 in a 7.3 over spell including the final wicket when Takapuna’s last pair put on 37 runs. They came together at 98/9 and just played sensible cricket on a pitch which had settled down and as the runs came, so did the tension build. Finally Naude completed his day taking the final wicket and Howick had won its second championship of the week.

Howick Pakuranga Premier Women played their final in the Pearl Dawson T20 competition at Colin Maiden. Pakuranga United edged in final T

he Akarana Timbers Pakuranga United 7s team came up just short in recapturing the Middlesex Cup for a second time on the weekend, losing a very tight and tense final 14-28 to Norths from Wellington.

Pakuranga went into the tournament having not played 7s since before Christmas but there were no signs of any rust as the team steam rolled through day one with victories over 2018 finalists Napier Old Boys Marist 24-12, 31-17 over Awanui and 24-17 against Feilding.

“At the end of day one I thought we were one of the top three teams on display and as long as we stayed healthy and maintained our standards, I thought we would go close to making it to the final,” said head coach Mark Dickison.

Day two saw those standards asked for by Coach Dickison immediately on display as Whangarei Old Boys Marist were dispatched 36-10 in one of the team’s best displays of the 7s season. This meant a semifinal against two-times defending champions and tournament hosts Eden. Pakuranga got off to a quick start scoring three quick tries in the first half to race out to a 15-nil early.

For Pakuranga United Michaile Van Wyk was named the Akarana Timbers PURC player of the tournament for his fantastic play across the two days by Coach Dickison.

“Michaile played brilliantly but also is such a pleasure to coach as he takes what we teach him onto the field and puts it into action, I can’t wait to see what he can achieve at the club in 2019.”
