Nutter set own room alight’

he fire which gutted most of a Somerville Road home last week was allegedly caused by a disgruntled 24-year-old flatmate who torched his own bedroom.

And the home, valued recently at around $1.6 million, is not in any way connected to the production of the drug P (methamphetamine), another occupant told the Times.

A woman – who had a room at the house and asked not to be named – said the culprit was one of six renting a room at the plush home.

The alleged arsonist currently has name suppression.

The head tenant, who is understood to be around retirement age, is believed to be Kevin Patterson, an apparent former teacher at Howick College.

The home’s owner – who also asked for anonymity – said the house had been rented out for six years to Kevin with no problems – until this issue with the alleged arsonist.

Kevin had tried to eject the young man. “Kevin is respectable. He has history with the school and is now a professional painter,” the owner said.

The issue with the alleged arsonist was the culmination of several days of pressure to pay the rent.

The woman said Kevin tried

to throw “the nutcase” out the week before the fire. On the day he was kicked out, the door was locked behind him.

The woman said: “He was locked out. I heard him say ‘Fire! Get out,” she said.

“He was crazy. The fire started in his own room (located upstairs). I’m really shocked.

“People said he was running over cars.”

She reiterated that the house was not dealing or making illicit drugs. “It’s not a P house – it never was. It’s peaceful and quiet. There are never any parties here.”

Police charged the man on Monday afternoon and he has appeared in the Manukau

District Court. He is to appear again later this month. The maximum penalty for the offence is 14 years’ jail.

Part of Somerville Road was closed off from 4pm on Monday as fire fighters worked for several hours to get the blaze under control.

Meanwhile the home’s owner said his insurer says the house isn’t covered for arson.

“The property has always been insured,” the owner said.

He said in 2016 State Insurance brought in a new policy and that arson is not covered.

“Now they don’t want to pay.

You should always check your policy,” warned the owner, who has not discounted challenging State’s position.

However a State spokesperson said there have been no significant changes to State Home Insurances policies regarding arson in recent years.

“Insurance claims are considered on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on the facts and circumstances related to the event.

“As with most home insurance policies, State covers policyholders for accidental loss, not intentional damage.

However, in general terms, with rental properties, if a tenant, guest of a tenant or anyone else living in the building, intentionally causes damage by fire, then the policy would provide cover for this.”

drum roll, followed by a traditional Lion Dance, heralded Paul Young’s entry to Auckland Council.

The new councillor was officially sworn in as a representative of the Howick Ward by Mayor Phil Goff at the meeting of Auckland Council’s Governing Body on September 27.

To mark the occasion, a Chinese cultural performance was held before the official ceremony. The traditional lion dance is said to signify good luck.

Young made his statutory declaration and addressed a meeting attended by family, friends, supporters and fellow councillors including his Howick Ward colleague Sharon Stewart.

In his maiden speech he acknowledged the late Dick Quax and the contribution he made to the Howick Ward and to Auckland. He also spoke of his own commitment to Auckland and to supporting migrant communities.

“Nearly 24 per cent of Aucklanders identify as Asian and it’s important this is reflected in the diversity of this governing body. I’m proud to represent my Asian-Kiwi ward but,

first and foremost, I’m an Auckland Councillor and will strive to serve all Aucklanders.

“Encouraging integration of new migrants into New Zealand society and enabling them to make a valuable contribution is important. It’s good for our city as a whole and I am committed to engaging people from a wide range of backgrounds.

“A priority is also transport opportunities for east Auckland including the Eastern Busway Project,” said Young.

Goff congratulated Young on becoming the newest member of the Governing Body, highlighting his ever-present commitment to the community.

“Paul has always shown a rugged determination to become an elected representative of his local community and today he fulfils that dream,” said Goff.

“I know he has worked hard to get here and that he will continue that hard work.

“Having Paul on this council will make us richer in representing the diversity of Auckland. I welcome Paul’s election as building a more representative Governing Body that

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has announced that he will be taking a few months away from Parliament for health reasons.

Ross, who is also the National Transport and Infrastructure spokesperson, will be taking medical leave from today and doesn’t expect to be back in Parliament for some time.

“Recently I have been dealing with some personal health issues,” he says.

“There are times in life where you have to put your own health and family first. As a husband and a father I need to do that at this time.”

Ross has also requested that his Transport and Infrastructure portfolios be reallocated and that he step back from his front bench role.

He says he looks forward to returning to Parliament in the future to re-join Caucus.

National Party leader Simon Bridges says he is supportive of Ross’ request for time away from Parliament to deal with some personal health issues.

“Jami-Lee will be stepping back from his portfolio responsibilities and from the Opposition front bench,” he says.

“His Transport portfolio will be picked up by Paul Goldsmith and his Infrastructure responsibilities

by Judith Collins. Paul Goldsmith’s Revenue portfolio will be picked up by Andrew Bayly.”

Bridges confirmed this decision is unrelated to an ongoing leak investigation into who leaked Bridges’ travel expenses to the media.

anjna Patel couldn’t stop the tears at the official opening of Gandhi Nivas, the third early intervention centre for men involved in domestic violence.

With a good representation from the police and ACC at the event, the third family violence facility for men was recently opened by Jenny Salesa, the Minister for Ethnic Communities and Associate Minister of Health. The minister acknowledged the work that Gandhi Nivas does with timely intervention to bring about positive changes to the perpetrators of family harm.

“I understand it was established to be of service primarily to members of the Indian community but has since grown to cater to all other communities including Maori and Pacifica,” she said.

The facility in Papakura has been dedicated to the memory of the late Vivek Varma, husband of Sucharita Varma who is a counsellor and support manager of counselling centre `Sahaayta’, and passionate about the initiative to reduce family harm and violence.

Acknowledging his unstinting support to Gandhi Nivas, a plaque was unveiled in Mr Varma’s memory.

He passed away suddenly on July 3, leaving behind a wife and two sons.

Mr Varma was also a much loved member of the Police.

Brainchild of Farm Cove resident Ranjna Patel, Gandhi Nivas is a partnership between Serenity Foundation, Sahaayta Counselling and NZ Police.

Counties Manukau District Commander, Superintendent Jill Rogers was there to support the opening of the home for men who are referred there by police for free counselling and emergency housing.

She said that the ability of police in Auckland to refer people to Gandhi Nivas has “made colleagues across the country jealous”.

The underlining philosophy of Gandhi Nivas is don’t take the women and children out of the home – put the man in a safe place instead, with wrap-around 24/7 services including counselling.

So impressed was ACC with the initiative that they came on board with a grant two years ago.

The economic cost associated with family violence is estimated to be between $4.1 and $7 billion per year, and rising.

Dog adoption day

otany Town Centre will host a Dog Adoption Day in conjunction with DC Rescue Dogs and Auckland Puppy Rescue to try find forever homes for rescue pups in need on Saturday.

Each year, DC Rescue Dogs saves more than 200 dogs from euthanasia in the North Island.

The next step is to find these dogs homes so that they continue to live long and happy lives.

The Botany Town Centre Dog Adoption Day is an annual event hosted by the centre which aims to make dog adoption a more accessible and convenient option

for people, bringing the puppies to the public.

hanging between a ferry and bus at Half Moon Bay is now easier and protected from the weather.

Auckland Transport, in partnership with the Howick Local Board and the NZ Transport Agency, opened the new Half Moon Bay bus interchange following a dawn karakia last Friday.

Buses started using the interchange on Sunday.

AT’s group manager for major projects, David Nelson says that the bus interchange and pier provide safer, more convenient connections between ferry services and bus services.

“It plays a pivotal role in supporting bus services that form part of new bus network for east Auckland and is within a short walking distance of the ferry pier,” he says.

“In addition to the improved amenity and convenience of having bus services close to the new pier, the new bus facility will provide for much safer pedestrian connectivity between services, eliminating the need for pedestrians to cross vehicle routes or filter through traffic.”

He says the transport hub at Half Moon Bay is part of AT’s plan to provide a wellconnected and easy-to-use public transport network for all Aucklanders.

Howick Local Board chair David Collings says the bus interchange is the final piece of the puzzle of its vision to create a transport interchange at Half Moon Bay. “With the new ferry pier that opened last year, the new bus network and now the interchange, commuters can enjoy a much more pleasant and connected public transport experience by being able to get off a ferry or bus and transferring to another service within a few metres.”

Howickians’ special reunion Twenty-nine years ago, long-standing Howickians were bemoaning the fact that the only time they met for a catch-up was at a funeral of one of their own.

The idea was born to hold a special annual celebration, at a pleasant venue, for the purpose of sharing memories and photographs, acknowledging those no longer with us and generally having a jolly good chin-wag and a cuppa with old friends, colleagues and neighbours from Howick Village and surrounding districts.

Thus the Howickians’ reunion was born and an annual get-together became a regular not-to-bemissed event for 29 consecutive years. This year is no exception. On Sunday, October 7 at Howick Bowling Club in Selwyn Rd, Howick, old and new members will meet in the name of friendship. (Entry - ladies a plate and men $8).

On the day, they will be acknowledging the sterling work done by Pamela Taylor (neé Newton) as Convenor of the Howickians for many years and welcoming.

he new organiser of the annual Howick Santa Parade is promising a massive injection of fun and engagement at this year’s event.

Bo Burns said the community and business feedback, and the intention to participate in many different ways in this year’s iconic parade on Sunday, December 9, has been extremely positive.

“To date we already have 44 floats booked and we can only take 60. Many of our local schools and clubs haven’t even booked yet,” Bo said.

Also being re-introduced again this year is Miss Howick Carnival Queen which will be run by long-time beauty pageant coordinator Val Lott. Val’s long-standing assistant Sarah McIntyre is on board too.

The objective, said Val, is to help youngsters boost confidence, learn new skills, especially public speaking and make new friends.

Val and Sarah are calling for entrants now for the following age sections - 5-7 years, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-16.

Birds of a feather in Flat Bush

number of peacocks – resplendent with their iridescent blue and green plumage – and peahens have been sighted in the Flat Bush area.

With the breeding season from late August to January, Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN spotted a roost of eight to nine peafowls in the bush—to raise their chicks.

It is interesting to note that around five years ago there were more than 12 peacocks roosting at the Logan Carr Reserve in Dannemora.

Some of the residents saw them as a nuisance and complained to council.

While there were mixed feelings about the beautiful birds, they were finally moved to another area with plenty of room to strut their stuff.

ot even the rain could dampen the mood at Clevedon School’s annual Agriculture Day held recently.

The school field was abuzz with excitement with various food stalls, bake sales and raffles.

Proud students showed off their ability to care for and train their animal by taking them through a

number of obstacles courses and other activities.

A chorus of bleeting goats and lambs echoed across the field throughout the day.

Some students opted to care for and cultivate a plant instead.

Prizes were awarded and colourful ribbons were spotted as far as the eye could see.

Every year Clevedon School hosts its beloved Agricultural Day where parents and families gather to watch the students show off their animals.

Petrol tax continues to drive up the cost of living A

s I meet with people across the Pakuranga Electorate, I am constantly told about the impact the Government is having on the back pockets of New Zealanders by forcing up the price of petrol through increased petrol taxes.

The cost of living is increasing in New Zealand, with petrol and rents reaching record levels and electricity expected to follow; this is all a direct result of illthought through Government policies.

It’s particularly bad for hardworking taxpayers in Auckland, who were already facing record high fuel prices thanks to the regional fuel tax, which has further pushed up our everyday costs.

When National was in Gov-

ernment we were able to invest in major new roading projects throughout Auckland without a regional fuel tax while keeping the cost of living down. The Waterview Tunnel is just one example.

Our ambitious transport agenda was one that didn’t require the Auckland Council to impose new taxes. We expected them to tighten their ever increasing spending while we kept our own books in order with strong budget surpluses.

The national fuel price is currently averaging $2.40 a litre for 91, around half of which is already tax. This is a huge increase from just a year ago, when in October last year the national price was only $2.069.

This means for everyday fami-

lies it now costs an extra $20 to refuel their car.

This month the Government rolled out another petrol tax the first of its three 4 cents per litre national fuel tax increases, pushing the fuel price even higher. Further tax increases are planned for 2019 and 2020.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford has argued that people on low incomes will be less affected, but he has ignored the fact that they spend a greater proportion of their income on petrol. This means tax increases have a bigger impact on their ability to pay the bills at a time when the cost of living is already skyrocketing.

And if all this wasn’t enough, ACC has proposed a 12.1 per cent hike in the motor vehicle

Now in its 18th year, Bookarama, hosted by The Rotary Club of Howick, is the club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, bursting with books ready to go to new homes.

“The response to this year’s Bookarama has been incredible. The techo people tell us that ebooks are going to kill print, but we know differently,” says Bookarama chairman John Savory.

He says dozens of volunteers have spent hours sorting through tens of thousands of books for the big event which will take place from October 10 to 14 in the Howick RSA basement on Wellington Street.

All books have been donated from the overflowing bookcases of Howick residents who are eager to see the books they no longer read go to new owners.

He says CDs, DVDs, records and even good oldfashion jigsaw puzzles are piling up.

Volunteers will be on hand to help you navigate the treasure-trove that is Bookarama.

This year Bookarama is also going to be plasticfree so shoppers are encouraged to bring their own carry bags.

An Auckland Transport spokesperson said: “These speed limits have been introduced on a temporary basis and are in recognition that there have been a number of loss of control crashes along the route.”

On the first day, Sinopia took to the stage in the quartet finals and impressed the capacity audience with their performances of If I Had My Way and Deed I Do. In a tough field with stiff competition from the Wellington region in particular, the girls were crowned 2018 Champions – the first Macleans College Quartet to win the title since 2012.

The next day the full 55-strong chorus took to the stage.

Macappella were clearly audience favourites with their resonant sound and precise choreography led by Melody Lowe.

It was a clean sweep for the Macleans Girls’ Barbershop.

Their performances of Go the Distance and When That Midnight Choo Choo Leaves for Alabam’, left a strong impression on the

panel of adjudicators and were announced 2018 Chorus Champions – a title that has eluded Macleans College for 17 years.

Education Term 4 Howick Primary’s new Native Tree Area With the generous support of the charities “Trees that Count” and “Paper for Trees”, over 500 small native plants including Te Kouka, Titoki, Kauri, Karo (Pittosporum,) Manuka, Kanuka, Ake Ake, Puriri, Manuka and Kanuka have been planted by all the students of Howick Primary school in the “Pukatea Kahikatea Native Planting area”, situated in the

northern corner of the school.

Senior students taught juniors how to plant the trees and every child was involved.

Pukatea and Kahikatea trees were abundant in this area before the land was cleared for housing and settlement, so specimens of these two trees are being sought to complete the planting.

This is a legacy project,

established this year for the future benefit of the Howick Primary School children and community. We know the children will take great pride in the future showing the trees they planted themelves.

The garden has been designed by a young permaculturalist and ecological designer, Chris Anderson, based on Waiheke Island.

Chris has been assisting the school in developing an outdoor classroom to support sustainability education – featuring compost systems, edible gardens and native plantings.

Come and visit our native planting area. Soon we hope to have a park bench installed so you can sit and enjoy the ambience.

ew Zealand has once again dominated ITF Taekwon-Do by being the leading nation at the World Cup in Sydney over the past week.

NZ won 175 medals, 61 of them gold, while Australia were second with 27 gold and Argentina had 25 gold. Twenty seven nations appeared on the medal table. The tournament hosted more than 1000 competitors from 35 countries.

The Masters and Instructors in NZ are world class, passing on expert

mentoring to all clubs around the country.

The leading New Zealand club was Paul M Papakura which contributed 28 medals in total, second only to a united contingent from Uzbekistan. Hwa Rang – Tauranga, Van Roon Martial Arts – Mt Eden and Southern Cross Taekwon-Do Academy – Palmerston North were next all making up the top 10.

Clubs from all round the country were well represented from Kerikeri to Mosgiel.
