he recent unveiling of the first stage of the $78 million development at Botany Town Centre lived up to the hoopla and excitement as long queues of eager shoppers lined up hours before the doors to the shopping centre opened.

The new retailers on the block, global make-up brand Mecca Maxima and fashion brand H&M certainly knew how to work up the anticipation of excited shoppers as they gave away freebies (goodie bags and free cinnamon buns) as reward for all those who braved the cold and patiently waited outside for the sliding doors to open.

A haka by Sancta Maria College, key speeches by Mayor Phil Goff and Mark Kirkland, AMP Capital managing director Shopping Centres, followed by cultural performances by students of Botany Downs Secondary College and performances by professional entertainers, marked the official opening.

The ribbon was cut by Nick Cobham, portfolio manager AMP Capital, and Mr Kirkland.

Mr Kirkland said it has been a long journey getting the best brands to the shopping centre and that there is more to come with the next phase of the opening.

“Botany Town Centre, which we manage on behalf of its owners, is a key retail, entertainment and community hub in the greater Auckland region, and investment was crucial to ensure the centre remains a desirable destination that meets the needs of a

diverse and growing community,” he said.

“AMP Capital is pleased to unveil the first stage of the development and deliver a premier shopping centre experience for our customers, retailers and investors. Thank you to the owners for their investment in this development and their support for the centre”.

The new retailers include H&M, Mecca Maxima, Decjuba, The Cosmetic Clinic, Platypus, Presshouse, Stewart Dawson, Novo, Pandora,

Westpac and Sushi Sushi.

Also opening later in the month is Starbucks and Postie (both previous tenants returning to the new-look centre), as well as PapaRich, Gong Cha, Connor and Sunglass Hut. Existing retailer Hallensteins will also open a newlook store soon.

The development will expand the centre to 62,700sqm; including an extension to the Fashion Pavilions which will see the number of tenancies grow to more than 200 stores includ-

ing new fashion and lifestyle brands.

This follows the completed refurbishment of Hoyts Cinemas, now with more than 1000 luxurious powered recliner cinema seats.

The upgrade will include an extended landscaped area outside the Pavilions with children’s play area and seating for dining. In addition, current upgrades are underway to enclose the outdoor area of Garden Lane.

This is targeted to open in spring.

Father of murdered daughter on a mission to change lives ■■By Farida Master

ang. He put a shotgun to her throat and killed her from close range.

When the police knocked at David White’s door to inform him that his daughter Helen had been shot by her husband Greg Meads, a feeling of shock and intense grief took over as his life flashed past him.

The last 10 years saw him move home to Matamata to be close to his daughter and included talks about fixing things, working on the stud farm with her while thinking the threats and abuse were one-off incidents.

“What an idiot I had been to never once see a pattern to the violence,” White said.

The shattered father, who has been on a mission to create awareness about the warning signs of family violence and prevent other women from walking in his daughter’s shoes, or other fathers suffering the same fate – was at the Fencible Lounge this week at the invitation of Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown.

White has been on the road since February, covering the length and breadth of New Zealand. He intends to cover 71 electorates to share his story. He also visits prisons, talking to gang members in an effort to change lives.

“He shot my daughter Helen just

because she said, `I’m going to leave you next Saturday’.

“Her husband, a wealthy horse breeder, spent the next three days planning how to kill her.

“Family violence is not restricted to a low socio-economic group or to South Auckland. It doesn’t discriminate between colour, race or wealth.

“When the police informed me that my daughter had been killed by her husband, my immediate thought was that I didn’t want to live without my first-born. I wanted to commit suicide,” said White, who admits he was a coward.

His wife Pam reacted differently.

Her first response was: “At least that b**** won’t be able to hurt my daughter anymore.”

At 65, just when David thought he would retire, the bereaved granddad suddenly had the responsibility of looking after three children with the youngest nine-years-old.

“How do you tell a nine-year-old that her mother has been shot dead by her father?

“Though my daughter was murdered 10 years ago, we still feel the impact to this day. We’ve been scarred forever. It’s changed all of us.

“Samantha started wetting her bed at 10 years of age. At 18 Sam went out for dinner with her boyfriend and when the host casually

asked her `what do your parents do’?

“Sam just left the dinner table, walked out of the door and sat in the gutter bawling her eyes out.

She called me on my cell phone to say `Granddad can you please come and get me now’.”

Talking about the traumatic journey for both the granddaughters and how differently they dealt with it, he said that the court battles took their toll on everyone.

If there are two words in the English language that you should never have to say, they are “if only!”

“I always thought that my son-inlaw, who owns a stud farm with 40 mares, had no social skills. If only I had seen the signs earlier, none of this would have happened,” he said.

However after going through a gamut of emotions of hurt, anger and sorrow over the years, White felt that he needed to do something constructive about the perpetrators of crime, to end family violence. He also believed it was also important for his grandkids to have a future with their dad.

“I’m not going to live forever,” he thought.

White drove down to the Tongariro Prison to visit his son–in-law.

He hadn’t informed his family of what he was about to do.

Greg is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum non-

parole period of 11 years that could be extended to 15 or 17 years.

At 74 years of age, White arranged a mediation meeting with his sonin-law.

“Though at one time I felt that 11 years is way too short for my daughter’s death, I now feel that 11 years is way too long for my granddaughter. I don’t want her to be a statistic.

“I spoke to the parole officer and told him of my plan of how he could get him an early release.

“I also want Greg to help other prisoners who have been involved in family violence.”

White said that his grandchildren were horrified when he broke the news to them that he was going to get their dad out.

But he said he sees a gradual change in them and believes it will bring more stability in their lives.

“To stop people from falling into the river we have go to upstream and find out why they are falling,” he said.

White urged people to use their local MPs to get more information so that they could use the knowledge and resources that MPs have.

While White is determined to help get his son-in-law out of prison, when asked if he had forgiven him, he said, “While Pam and I have accepted it, I did tell Greg, don’t ever expect us to forgive you for what you have done.”

Man appears in court over altercation at local school

A man has appeared in the Manukau District Court following an incident at an east Auckland primary school on Tuesday.

The Times understands that police apprehended a 31-year old man at Shelly Park School after receiving reports of concern for his wellbeing.

Shortly before police arrived it’s believed the man confronted a member of staff, says Inspector Chris Barry, Acting Area Commander, Counties Manukau East.

While police were apprehending the man a taser was discharged, Barry said.

There were no injuries as a result.

The incident took place in the school’s administration area and no children were involved.

The man has been charged with assault and obstructing police. At this stage police cannot rule out further charges being laid.

rosion may be a slow process but the progress of local bodies to stop it in its tracks can feel slower still.

Although the wheels of Auckland Transport (AT) and Auckland Council are in motion regarding efforts to halt erosion of Bucklands Beach, a sea change is needed, local resident Bruce Kendall contends.

“I have been a little disappointed (to say the least) at the [slow] rate of progress by Council,” the former Olympic boardsailor says.

“If half Lloyd Elsmore Park was unusable by the public for some reason, [local bodies] would move a lot quicker to resolve the situation.

But, because the beach has degraded over a long period, people don’t really realise how much they’ve lost.”

The erosion of sand at Bucklands Beach dates back to the 1950s when the road was widened, causing the gradient of the beach to steepen and sand to be carried away by the sea.

Works, including restoration of the seawall and implementation of a breakwater, could halt or at least minimise erosion, Mr Kendall believes.

“I’ve put forward the reasons why the beach is deteriorating and how it can be fixed – basically, we need to add sand and stop it from moving. A shallow beach [with a gradual gradient] will build up sand but a steep beach is an eroding one; that’s

pretty much it.”

Since the Times spoke to Mr Kendall in November 2017, a report by Tonkin and Taylor has been submitted on the state of local beaches (including Bucklands Beach) but discussion is yet to result in action. Auckland

Transport has confirmed, previously, that it plans to rebuild the seawall in the early 2020s, if not sooner should the need arise.

“We had a meeting in December to submit [the report]. AT’s position was that their asset [the road] is stable so it doesn’t require immediate work; my position is that, in the meantime, their asset is taking away the asset of the beach from the public.

“I’ve had meetings with David Collings and Gary Boles from the Howick Local Board, including a site visit, and their reaction was that it’s too expensive and too difficult. But we know they have some discretionary funding and I think they (as well as Auckland Transport) should be putting money aside for this.”

The wheels of local government may seem to turn slowly but ‘people power’ can ensure they don’t grind to a halt altogether, Mr Kendall adds.

“I’d advise everyone to take a look at the [Bucklands Beaches Restoration and Upgrade Project] Facebook page for more information and lobby Council.

These beaches belong to all of us and we need to insist something is done to restore them.”

Appeal for volunteers Every week in New Zealand, 12 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. It is the number one cause of death in babies and infants, and there is no known cure.

Being born with a heart defect does not discriminate. It can affect any child from every walk of life.

Heart Kids supports families as they manage the challenges that come with having a heart child. The charity receives no Government funding and relies on donations and grants.

On June 3, Heart Kids launches its National Awareness Week. Heart Kids is looking for kind-hearted, willing volunteers to help with the annual street appeal.

New toolkit to support art events A

new set of free resources aims to provide event organisers with extra support.

The New Zealand Book Council’s Event Support Kit offers downloadable resources including checklists, templates and strategies for event organisers.

It also includes links to existing Book Council resources, such as the extensive Writers File and an Event Calendar for free listing of literary events.

Book Council CEO Jo Cribb says the support kit is a response to the number of emerging festivals showcasing local authors and their books.

“Festivals can be a great way of exposing new audiences to authors. We are especially supportive of events that showcase the diversity of New Zealand writers and seek to reach new or poorly served audiences,” she says.

“Over the years, the Book Council has supported many festivals and book events and in

doing so we’ve learnt about what might help their organisers. We hope event organisers will find these resources useful.”

Programmes manager Kathryn Carmody brings extensive event management experience to her role council.

She hopes the toolkit will give new event organisers ideas and reassurance and remind experienced event organisers to reach out to others in the sector.

“We want to give people who are starting out some ideas about how other people organise stuff. Last year the Middlemore Foundation collected nearly 20,000 pairs of pyjamas but this year they hope to double this number to 40,000, with the generosity of the community.

In addition to winter pyjamas, the Foundation is also asking for donations of good quality beanies, scarves, nighties, mittens and gloves.

A proposal for a referendum to be held on the matter has been put forward. I intend to support there being a referendum so New Zealanders have the final say on this complex issue.

nabis.

I can see merit in medicinal use of cannabis where someone has a demonstrable health need. I am not convinced the country is yet ready to see the drug be legalised entirely, however I may be proved wrong when New Zealanders have their say at the ballot box.

he End of Life Choice Bill will soon come up for its second reading in Parliament and a vote will then be held on whether it proceeds to the next stage of the legislative process.

This is the law change that would allow for voluntary euthanasia.

The feedback I have received on the Bill has been mixed and I have heard strong arguments from people on both sides of the debate.

As a local MP, I strive to support greater personal freedom and choice for our community.

These freedoms should not be without limitation however and safeguards are vital when laws are liberalised.

The Bill is not yet in a shape where it could be passed. Further amendments are needed to improve it and address shortcomings that have been identified.

Parliament should look at the available options to improve the Bill before taking a final vote.

In 2016, I surveyed my electorate on this matter and received 3599 responses, with 2516 in

An orchestra and two choirs will join forces for the first time In Paradisum (‘Into Paradise’) for one of the most widely-loved choral-orchestral works.

The 70-piece Manukau Symphony Orchestra and 75 voices from the Pakuranga Choral Society and South Auckland Choral Society are coming together to perform the ethereal Requiem by Gabriel Fauré.

It will be the first time the Pakuranga Choral Society and South Auckland Choral Society perform with a largescale orchestra.

“As Manukau’s orchestra, we look forward to collaborating with our local choirs and exquisite soloists to bring this beautiful work to life,” says Uwe Grodd, Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s music director.

It will be the first time the Pakuranga Choral Society and South Auckland Choral Society perform with a largescale orchestra.

“It’s not every day that we get to sing with a full orchestra in a large professional venue such as the Vodafone Events Centre,” says David Hamilton, well-known New Zealand composer and principal guest conductor of the Pakuranga Choral Society.

large maturing pine forest on Auckland City’s metropolitan boundary which is ready for harvesting in the near future is up for sale.

The 135-hectare block is located at the lower foothills of the Hunua Ranges some 50km south-east of Auckland City. Owned by the current proprietor for past 50 years, the forest was planted between 1993 and 2000 in a mix of lusitanica and radiata pine varieties.

The freehold land and forest at Stevens Road are now being marketed for sale by tender through Bayleys Counties, with tenders closing at 2pm on June 6. The forestry plantation encompasses six individual land titles which are all zoned rural under Auckland Council’s land usage plan.

Bayleys Counties salesperson Peter Sullivan said there were multiple ways

of valuing the asset – depending on its future use once the logs were extracted in the near future. Trees are grown on some 93.8 hectares of the Hunua property.

“These mid-to-long-term options range from harvesting the existing plantation and replanting more pine forest, through to harvesting the logs and clearing the site in preparation for subdivision into lifestyle residential properties, or taking the subdivision option right through to selling off individual sections with utilities and roading infrastructure laid in place,” he said.

“The lifestyle subdivision option is underpinned by the property being held in six individual land titles, along with the site’s proximity to Hunua village.”

Sullivan said the forest was serviced by existing internal roading and tracks.

During the recent school holidays, 19 intermediate school students from Maraetai Beach School travelled to the ancient city of Xi’an, China. Principal Mark Keenan shares the experience.

his is the first time students from the school have travelled overseas on a school trip. The trip was organised through Hua Yi International Education and Culture and the children were accompanied by the school principal, a teacher, parents and representatives from Hua Yi. The group spent 10 days in Xi’an visiting schools and areas of cultural significance.

Before the students left they had several lessons to prepare them for the trip, this included learning Mandarin, about the local customs and the history of the city and surrounding areas.

The purpose of the trip was for the students to develop a deeper interest and understanding of the chinese culture and to experience what it is like to attend school in another country.

While the students were in Xi’an they were hosted by families from a local primary school, South Lake Primary.

Living with a family gave them the opportunity to experience life in a Chinese household including eating local foods and making friends with the local children. While language was a barrier to begin with, the children soon worked their way around this and many

At the beginning of March, I tripped on the cobble stones in Howick Shopping Centre, breaking my hip.

I had to have surgery and a complete new hip.

I just wanted to write and thank all the people who helped me, especially the lady who phoned for an ambulance.

I am home now and doing quite well at the moment walking with crutches which I hope to get rid of shortly. Once again, a big thank you for all your help.

St Mark’s School 40th Jubilee The 40th Jubilee of St Mark’s School was celebrated on Saturday March 30 and Sunday March 31. Bishop Patrick Dunn celebrated the Mass on the Sunday.

Strange that we spent the sixties and seventies fighting for no censorship of, nor control of anything.

But we now have people who are so virtuous, caring and concerned and they know best.

As I am involved in art and craft education, I thought it would come in handy one day. are even now damaging our precious and vulnerable environment.

In light of this, the impending mass tree felling across Auckland maunga (including Pigeon Mountain), which few people seem aware of, is unconscionable – 112-150+ mature trees lost from each of the 14 reserves, adding up to a probably conservative estimate of a couple of thousand mature trees.

Saving existing trees, including the thousands due to be felled on the Auckland maunga and an urgent emphasis on protecting mature trees, is one of the least painful changes we could possibly make among all the changes that we will need to make in order to avoid changes that will most certainly be uncomfortable, if not for our older generation, then for our tamariki and mokopuna, and for whom do we keep this world in trust for but them?

Foreign buyer ban affects demand I

t’s clear from last week’s Statistics NZ figures that October’s Foreign Buyer Ban has cut into property demand from this source, and is likely to have contributed to the softening in values in areas such as Auckland and Queenstown, CoreLogic Senior Property Economist Kelvin Davidson says.

In the first three months of the year there were 204 property purchases by people without citizenship or a residency visa, 81 per cent lower than the same quarter a year ago (1083).

“The latest figure equated to only 0.6 per cent of the total, easily the lowest on record (which admittedly only goes back to the end of 2016),” says Davidson.

“At the same time, 1 per cent of sales were by people without citizenship/residency, resulting in a net purchasing figure of -0.4 per cent – or in other words, there was net selling (i.e. more non-citizens/residents sold property in Q1 than purchased it).

“Clearly, last October’s Foreign Buyer Ban has now taken full effect and there have been some pretty dramatic shifts in areas such as Central Auckland and Queenstown.”

For example, a year ago, 18.7 per cent of purchases in the Waitemata Local Board area (part of Central Auckland) were made by non-citizens/residents, but now that’s just 3.2 per cent – which will be Australians, Singaporeans, or

other people buying apartments in large-scale developments. The same figure for Queenstown has dropped from 9.7 per cent to 2.7 per cent.

“In light of these figures, it’s no coincidence that sales activity and property values have recently softened in these ‘prime’ markets,” he says.

“Admittedly, other factors such as low affordability and tighter credit availability are still playing a key role.

“But the Foreign Buyer Ban is clearly having an effect too, and for would-be local buyers, there’ll be more opportunities to access the market at a lower price than might otherwise have been the case.”

REINZ welcomes Welfare Advisory Group report The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the Welfare Advisory Group Report released on Friday, particularly the recommendations around increasing the range of home ownership options, boosting housing supply, affordability and healthy homes.

Bindi Norwell, Chief Executive at REINZ says there are currently a number of significant issues impacting accessibility to housing, particularly for low to middle income earners,

across the country which the report rightly identifies.

“Specifically, the report focuses on the need to boost supply, innovative home ownership models, healthy homes and affordability.

“It also focuses on the needs of people with a disability and the social housing sector. Any measures the government can implement to resolve these issues are to be welcomed,” she says.

“However, it’s worth noting that some of the issues identi-

fied in the report have begun to be addressed through programmes such as KiwiBuild, the Healthy Homes legislation and insulation requirements. There have also been some announcement from companies and organisations promoting the benefits of shared equity and rent-to-buy scheme.

“We look forward to more details being released around the recommendations and innovative solutions outlined in the report.”

s rush defences continue to strangle what was once enterprising back play, rugby’s beautiful swan is turning into an ugly duckling.

That, and the horrendous time delay in setting scrums, has been a blight to a game which no longer attracts the Super Rugby crowds it once did.

Both need attention by lawmakers who have turned a blind eye to the problem for too long.

They will be playing two elite junior tournaments and attending a three-day college golf camp.

The 3 day training camp is being run by over 16 of the best university golf coaches in the USA, including Stanford, Duke and Notre Dame and is limited to 50 players from around the world.

The young men will gain invaluable golf and life experience and an understanding of what it will take to get to college/university golf in America after they finish high school here in New Zealand.

With the trip costing around $14,000 each, the boys and their families and the club are frantically fundraising.

Kerryn Jamieson of Kerryn Jamieson Golf said he has been building the junior development programme at Pakuranga Golf Club over the past three years.

“Within our programme I have a development group that now has the skills and maturity to come with me to America in July,” he said.

“We are going to be taking three young men – Henry Wang, the current senior club champion; Ryan Forde, who is on a hot streak, just shot 67 nd 65 at Pakuranga in the

past two weeks; Jordan Jones, who just made the Auckland Junior development squad.

Prems qualify for top 8

akuranga United Rugby Club’s Prems found some rhythm to completely dominate a strong but undisciplined Otahuhu squad 77-7 on Saturday.

It also secures the Prems a spot in the top 8.

PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini said the opening 40 minutes was difficult despite the Pakuranga Prems dotting down five times.

“They’re hard games to play when the opposition has no structure,” he said.

“In the second half we attacked a bit more especially in our backs.”

The Prems have two tough matches ahead – the Rifles at home on Saturday and then Waitemata the following weekend.
