In the wake of the terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch last Friday which claimed the lives of 50 people, the Times has spoken to many people including Nabi Mussa. He says the shooting is weighing heavily on the hearts of the entire Muslim community as they realise how easily it could have been them.

t could have been any one of us,” says 24-year-old Nabi Mussa. Two weeks ago, Nabi sat across the table from a man who was one of the victims the Christchurch terror attacks.

“I was meeting a good friend for dinner and my friend brought him with him. We chatted and laughed.

“Over the weekend I saw the same guy on the news. He had survived two gunshot wounds.

“My friend told me he had gone down to Christchurch for the weekend.

“He happened to be praying for that one hour and in that hour his life changed.

Nabi says the events that have shaken the nation have weighed heavily on his heart.

“The first couple of days were a shock. I heard the news at work but it wasn’t until I got home that I fully understood what had happened.

His voice shakes as he speaks.

Nabi and his family have been going to the mosque on Ben Lomond Crescent for 15 years.

“My mother wanted to go out shopping on Saturday and my father stopped her.

“He said ‘it’s not safe for us’.

And I keep thinking about that.

“I’ve grown up in Auckland and I did all my schooling here.

I’ve had friends who have supported me through everything in life. I’ve never felt racism. I call Auckland my home.

“But I’ve been reminded that fear is very real in our community because racism is very real.”

He says the attack has affected his mum the most.

“The Muslim community is very isolated. Whereas I meet all kinds of people at work and through my studies...my mum meets her friends at the mosque.

“When she goes there she feels at home and she feels at peace. And the security of that has been shattered.

“Yes, the fear might fade but I don’t think it will ever be the same for her.”

Nabi went to the mosque earlier in the week and says the reality of how much destruction one person can cause has really hit home.

“Our mosques have no locked gates, no security. We welcome everyone. It’s one of the reasons why I am proud to be Muslim. Perhaps these things will change.

“I went to our mosque [on Sunday] and everything was closed but it hit me, how many people are sometimes in our mosques at one time.

“We hold a lot of gatherings especially around Rama-

dan and things like that and I realised what could happen if someone opened fire at one of these festivities; perhaps while people were walking out of the mosque. How much more bloodshed there would have been, how many more lives lost.

Nabi says people at work have asked him if he thinks there will be retaliation from the Muslim community.

“What I say to them is that forgiveness is at the core of the Muslim faith. Even in the most harrowing of times, we are taught to forgive and I think this will carry a lot of people through this tragedy.”

He says the attack has shown him why he is proud to call New Zealand home.

“Everyone has come together to support the Muslim community. Our sense of safety has been shaken and our hearts broken but the support has been inspiring.

“I spoke with a woman who had come to our mosque to pay her respects. She was a Christian and she was in the middle of doing a big assignment when she looked up where the mosque was in our area.

“She brought flowers and she wanted to know how my family and I were doing.

“I told her about my mum and she took her flower out of the fence. She said, ‘here, please take this home to your mum. Let her know she is in my prayers.

“It was the most touching thing I think I have ever experienced.”

And he says out of anywhere in the world he feels grateful to be here, in New Zealand, where everybody “stands as one”.

Resident: ‘Someone may just die’ ■■By Farida Master

T

here was a loud bang and a crunch of tyres as an out-ofcontrol car crashed into Ajay Walia’s property.

That was at 90 Pakuranga Road on March 7 at 5.30pm. Before he could recover from the damage, it happened again on March 8. Another car drove over his broken fence and crashed, centimetres away from his home.

Ajay and his wife live in constant fear of people accelerating whilst running an orange or a red light as they turn the corner from Ti Rakau Drive to Pakuranga Rd. They’re afraid those drivers will lose control of their cars and crash onto their property.

“Someone may just die like this.

It may be the driver, or a pedestrian walking on the footpath, school children or even one of my family members who are just on the lawn,” fears Ajay.

In the last year, there have been seven crashes with cars skidding over the footpath and crashing into their lawn.

“We are living dangerously and are desperate for help,” says Ajay, who has called Auckland Council numerous times.

Now Ajay has put boulders onto the footpath to protect his family and himself but that hasn’t stopped the speedsters from driving through their fence.

“It is not safe, regardless of whether it is winter or summer. We need some safety barriers to be put up. Even if it is just concrete blocks

they’ve had to call an ambulance.

In one instance, an old client was almost run-over, he says.

“She was walking on the footpath with a walker and a car crashed into my fence just then. She was terrified and said it could have been her.

A lot of times there are school kids walking on this footpath. It can kill anyone.”

Desperate for help Ajay shared his story with another customer who recommended that he contact Councillor Sharon Stewart.

On visiting Ajay’s home, Sharon immediately, contacted Shane Ellison, CEO of Auckland Transport and shared her concerns with him.

A safety officer soon visited the site and recommended that a safety guard be put.

“He did say that while AT has used

that they are using next-door where the AMETI demolition work is going on,” he says.

A taxi driver by profession, Ajay says that his battered fence has been fixed 11 times by the insurance company. Now he can’t put in any more claims.

On January 24, 2018 within an hour of the fence being fixed by the insurance company it was hit again by another driver.

In the nine years that they have lived at this address, they have had more than 30 scary incidents.

“My wife gets so tense the minute she hears the squeal of wheels. She is so anxious and is unable to sleep at nights. Next time someone can get killed.”

old couple was living here. He said they would look into it but nothing has happened so far,” he says.

He started keeping a record of calls to Auckland Council after he called to complain five years ago and was told by a council staff member that there was no record of any incidents happening at that site.

David Collings, chair of Howick Local Board, says that the board couldn’t discuss the matter because there were too many other things on the agenda to discuss.

“We need to discuss it as a board but haven’t got down to it. We have got a suggestion from Auckland Transport to put up a safety barrier that would cost around $50,000 but there is a formal structure we have to follow. It’s unfortunate but it’s something we have to do.”

Police complaints have been made and Ajay has carefully recorded the police complaint numbers with reference numbers.

“I have called the Howick Local Board so many times and have visited the office over six times. We once had Howick Local Board member Jim Donald visit us and he said that this has been happening for the last 20 years, from the time an

‘Board of Trustees to be replaced by bureaucrats’ S

everal local schools have strongly opposed the Government’s proposed changes to the education system.

Pigeon Mountain Primary is among the many local schools, including Owairoa Primary, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and Macleans College, standing against the proposal.

Pigeon Mountain principal Ian Dickinson will be joining teachers, boards of trustee members and the school and wider community at a meeting today (Thursday, March 21) aimed at raising awareness of the proposal, which, if accepted, will be “catastrophic” for the New Zealand education system.

Under the proposal, led by former Pakuranga College principal Bali Haque, boards of trustees (and therefore the community) will lose autonomy and influence over their local schools.

Instead, another layer of bureaucracy, known as an Educational Hub, will be created by the Ministry of Education to make all major decisions relating to the schools in its catchment.

“It means a team of bureaucrats will be given significant power to make all decisions around the education of our children without any meaningful oversight by the community,” said Mr Dickinson.

The aim is to improve equity between low and high decile schools and to help poorly-performing schools struggling with governance.

Mr Dickinson says key problems with the proposal are: ➤➤It removes the democraticallyelected board of trustees and replaces it with bureaucrats.

Communities will lose their influence and say over how schools are run ➤➤Loss of funding. School donations may be capped and international student numbers may be limited. This will mean high-decile schools will struggle to provide good quality facilities and teaching ➤➤It does not address the chronic shortage of teachers due to inadequate pay. In fact, the Education Hubs will take teachers away from schools, as they need to be staffed by “education professionals” ➤➤Tightly enforcing school zones

will stop parents being able to choose what school is right for their children.

Mr Dickinson says he and other local principals have not been meaningfully consulted.

“A small minority of schools are struggling with governance. We believe schools should be given the choice about whether or not to opt into services from an Education Hub. The majority of schools are performing extremely well and do not need or want this additional administrative and financial burden.

Alan McIntyre, principal, Owairoa Primary School says, “In our last two Education Review Office Review reports, they described Owairoa Primary School as a ‘Top Performing School’. They commented in the report about the stability of the staff and in particular the stability of the long serving Senior Management.

“They also commended the Board of Trustees on their proactive, experienced and supportive governance of the school. They noted how the Trustees brought a varied community and business expertise to the governance role.

“Why would you put all of this at risk by usurping the powers of the Board of Trustees, replacing the Principal every five years, moving experienced staff out of our school to prop up other schools, and creating another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy that is neither wanted nor warranted?” he reasons.

“To interfere with our ability to attract International Students to our school and hence the income generated from them, we would lose at least 14 staff members from our school.

“Keep your proposed changes and leave our community focused school alone to be managed and governed successfully and let us continue to meet the aspirations of our own community.”

Bruce Howard, chairperson Owairoa Primary School Board of Trustees adds saying, “I have had the privilege to serve on the Owairoa Primary School Board of Trustees for about 25 years. During this time I have seen unprecedented growth in the school due to the changing demographics of the area and a conviction to Excellence in Education.

“I fear for Owairoa and other schools if the outrageous model suggested in the Taskforce Report is adopted in its entirety.

“There is no way a faceless bureaucracy will provide anywhere near the level of accountability and careful direction that Boards of Trustees all over the country do for their own schools of which they have highly invested their time and energy in.

I heard someone suggest that the new bureaucracy would cost $20 million but I think realistically it will be over $100 million to set up.

“The Ministry of Education cannot properly staff their current advisory positions so I am at loss as to how they think they will staff this new level of bureaucracy and when they try they will be drawing off large numbers of qualified teaching staff from schools, with no realistic plan on how they can replace them.

“I have nothing personal to gain by wanting to maintain Boards of Trustees; I just know that they are more valuable to schools, parents and students than the proposed new organisation, at almost no cost.

“I do not believe that they have thought through the ramifications of these changes which will take education back to where it was prior to Tomorrow’s Schools, back to the 1980’s.” ➤➤Tomorrow’s Schools event at 7pm, Thursday March 21, Macleans College auditorium.

Bringing the Howick hills alive with local talent The Howick hills are well and truly humming with The Sound of Music.

The upcoming production at the Harlequin Theatre, has over 75 per cent of the cast from Howick and surrounding area. Many of the younger cast attend local schools, including Bucklands Beach Primary and Intermediate, Cockle Bay Primary, and Beachlands Primary.

or all those who are wondering what is happening at the $200 million-plus town centre being built in Flat Bush, property development & investment company Todd Property has provided an update.

They recently briefed Howick Local Board members for Botany Peter Young and Mike Turinsky as well as staff from Auckland Transport and Panuku, Auckland Council’s development arm.

Construction is currently underway for the 40,000sqm town centre, which will include 100 shops and businesses, a three-level car park building and four major businesses including the Warehouse, a Hoyts complex, the existing Pak’nSave and an additional supermarket.

New images by designers NH Architecture of Melbourne and Jasmax of Auckland reveal a contemporary architectural design, setting it apart from traditional closed-in suburban malls, or bigbox retail developments.

The 4.5-hectare site beside Barry Curtis Park will eventually include retail stores, restaurants, a gym and a movie theatre.

Todd Property Group is working in partnership with Panuku to create the town centre as part of a broader agreement to develop 19ha of formerly council-owned land in the area into a new community.

Todd Property managing director Evan Davies says the pedestrian-friendly centre will have a strong focus on food and entertainment, featuring a dining lane, a quality food hall and a restaurant precinct, along with an eight-cinema entertainment complex.

“The Ormiston community is experiencing phenomenal growth, and the town centre is going to be a massive transformation for the area,” says Davies.

“It’s going to create an exciting new focal point for the community and we are really excited to see it begin to take shape.”

Panuku chief executive Roger MacDonald said: “This is about taking a vacant site and turning it into an entirely new master-planned community. In time, Ormiston could provide a blueprint for how we take other townships in Auckland forward to provide for the growing population.”

Historically a dairy farming community, the population of Ormiston is predicted to balloon by 36,000 between 2013 and 2028 – the size of a town like Gisborne.

Being built by Scarbro Construction and Savory Construction, the town centre is expected to open in 2020.

About two-thirds of the overall Ormiston development has either been completed or is underway, including commercial spaces and 63 terraced homes, with another 66 under construction.

As part of Garden of Memories, Malcolm Smith Gallery will be presenting a series of public programmes, supported by Howick Local Board, that will look at quilt making, design and weaving through Pacific and Maori traditions.

“The number of new homes consented this year is at its highest level since the mid-1970s,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

“However, the population was only around 3 million in the 1970s, compared with nearly 5 million today.”

At the peak of the 1970s, approximately 13 new homes were consented per 1000 New Zealanders compared with 7 per 1000 in the year ended January 2019.

In 2004 around 8 new homes were consented per 1000 New Zealanders. The lowest point was 3 homes consented per 1000 New Zealanders in 2011.

The growth in new homes consented in the year ended January 2019 was driven by townhouses, flats, and units.

These were up 33 per cent from the year ended January 2018, compared with an increase of only 0.6 per cent for stand-alone houses in the same period.

In Auckland alone, 13,272 new homes were consented in the year ended January 2019, which was slightly more than were con-

n completing a record third Six Nations Grand Slam as Wales rugby coach with an overwhelming 25-7 victory against defending champions Ireland in Cardiff on Sunday, Warren Gatland’s contribution will live long in the hearts of Welsh fans.

His record for Wales far exceeds that of predecessors Graham Henry and Steve Hansen and his record with the British and Irish Lions, with wins over Australia and a drawn series against New Zealand, adds to his mana.

The win carries Wales one rung up the world ladder past Ireland to second behind the All Blacks who they haven’t beaten since 1953 against Bob Stuart’s men.

It was during that tour at an Edinburgh rugby function that captain Stuart earned warm applause when he took the stage and claimed Scottish heritage. However the claim

also made by several other All Blacks speakers who followed wore thin with an audience who sought relief when halfback Keith Davis, a Maori, took the stage.

No violence for kids

I feel compelled to air my concerns about violence that children are exposed to. This has come to my attention with the recent tragic events in Christchurch, although it has been on my heart for a very long time.

Parents, please ask yourselves this question: Do you allow your children to watch violent movies and play computer games? If the answer is yes, then why?

Yes, we are all busy as parents and it’s blissful when our kids are “entertained”, but at what cost?

The movies or computer games that kids are exposed to repeatedly surely becomes part of their thinking.

If they are watching or playing games that involve violence or killing, this must become “normal” in their existence.

“Oh but it’s harmless!” most parents say. I disagree.

Maybe that’s what mosque killer Brenton Tarrant’s parents thought while he was growing up.

In a news article, his 81-yearold grandmother Marie Fitzgerald was quoted saying: “He spent most of his time on computer games during high school days rather than chasing girls.” As if chasing girls would have been worse than computer games.

Instead, he was “innocently” filling his mind with killing, shooting and whatever else was brainwashing him through repeated visual violence.

Colour, costumes make a spirited athletics day ■ BY BETHANY BRITTEN AND ALESHA KANT Elim Christian College recently held their Year 11-13 Athletics Day at Lloyd Elsmore Park, after it being postponed the previous Friday due to bad weather.

Students came dressed in colourful and creative costumes displaying house spirit, and participated throughout the day in a variety of track and field events.

This year, the Interact Club’s annual bake sale at Athletics Day raised money for Child Rescue, which is an organisation that combats child trafficking and

sexual exploitation on an international scale. So far this year, Elim College raised more than $800 for Child Rescue, which is over half of the cost required for saving and restoring one child.

There were three athletics records broken, two of which had stood since 2013.

House points were awarded for accomplishments and participation, the day ending with Ezekiel house winning, with Jeremiah house close behind.

The senior students enjoyed an active, competitive, and fun day of athletics!

ll four matches in Premier Men Division One were one innings affairs due to the first day’s play being lost to rain.

Three of the four matches were drawn including Howick’s match against Takapuna, and at the end of the round The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men are 17 points clear of second placed Suburbs New Lynn and are in with an excellent chance of clinching the prized Hedley Howarth Trophy in the last match of the season.

In Saturday’s match Howick Pakuranga won the toss and invited Takapuna to bat. Taine Jolley made an immediate breakthrough with his second ball but Max O’Dowd and Guy Harley took advantage of the benign Lloyd Elsmore wicket and took the score through to 147 before Harley was dismissed for 56.

O’Dowd continued to take to the Howick bowling attack and was the last wicket to fall when Takapuna had used up its allocated 48 overs. O’Dowd scored 146 off 148 balls and was supported by the middle order as

Takapuna ran up an imposing 266/4.

Taine Jolley took 3/54 to top the bowling whilst Donovan Grobbelaar and Adam Jones both kept the batsmen in check conceding less than 4 runs an over. It was an innings of missed opportunities for Howick with several catches dropped at vital times.

Howick set about scoring the runs in its customary fashion with Walsh and Dan Young taking the

shine off the new ball and setting a platform for the big hitters to take the game forward. Young went with the score at 31 when he was on 20 and Andrew Morrison worked well with Walsh to accelerate the scoring rate until he was out with the total at 81.

Brian Barnard joined Walsh, who was still out in the middle and scored 30 off 26 balls including two big sixes. ➤ Turn to Page 15
