hey first met when he was 16. Welcoming Judith Collins to the inaugural Pakuranga SuperBlues meeting at the Howick Bowling Club on Friday morning, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown joked that he first met Judith Collins at her office when he was just six.

Not many are aware that a 16-year-old Simeon accompanied by his mum had approached the seasoned politician to share a letter written to him by the then Education Minister Chris Carter.

“He may have written it in a hurry but it had 16 proof reading errors in it,” he laughs.

“I showed the letter to Judith and she later read it out in Parliament saying that for an Education Minister to make 16 errors....”

The feisty politician dressed in an elegant Trelise Cooper outfit, had encouraging words to say.

“Even at quite a youngish age he (Simeon) is confident in Parliament and is getting things done.”

The Botany electorate’s sizeable Chinese community is fond of MP Jami-Lee Ross.

It was obvious at his victory party on General Election night, and is the case at many of his formal party gatherings.

And while not a man given to superstition, he is well aware his new ranking on the national Party list will not go unnoticed.

He was promoted to the front bench following National Party leader

Simon Bridges’ reshuffle on Sunday.

Ross, 32, has found himself elevated from number 27 on the list into the top 10, in itself rather special in that he is the only person on the front bench who hasn’t been a minister before.

He takes on the shadow portfolios of Transport and Infrastructure.

“I appreciate the opportunity that I have been given to move on to the front bench,” Ross told the Times.

Indeed the Chinese consider it the luckiest number in their culture.

The new roles mean he will have to relinquish his position as Chief Whip, a role he said he has enjoyed.

“But that’s often what happens when the Whip is given a chance to step forward,” he said.

And step up. He is assuming the lofty roles previously held by Simon Bridges (Transport) and senior statesman Steven Joyce (Infrastructure).

“Transport and Infrastructure are very important for economic growth and development,” he said.

“As an Auckland MP, I see this every day, but the role will also mean I will work a lot more with colleagues from around the country in these areas as well.”

His formative years in local government will come in handy. He was elected to the Manu-

kau City Council in 2004 aged 18 and six years later won a seat in the Howick Ward on the new Auckland Council.

Almost exactly sevenyears ago, he won election to parliament.

“Much of my time on the city council was around how we built infrastructure for the future,” said Ross.

“Now I’ll be working on that area on a nationwide basis.”

His shadow roles will mean more than just jousting with his opposites in the ArdernPeters government Labour’s Transport Minister is Phil Twyford and Infrastructure Minister NZ First’s Shane Jones.

There was also much work required if National wanted to return to government.

“Opposition parties usually hold the government of the day to account, but we will also be developing policy and ideas for what transport projects and infrastructure plans are needed for the next National-led Government,” said Ross.

“National was known as the infrastructure government. New Zealand will need to keep developing if we are to move forward and grow more jobs for Kiwis.”

Ross is one of five

new faces on the party’s front bench of its top 10 MPs. The reshuffle sees Judith Collins move up to be fourth-ranked MP and will take on Labour’s Phil Twyford in Housing and Urban Development.

Other new faces on the front bench are Todd McClay, who takes on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Tourism and Mark Mitchell, who assumes Justice and Defence.

Paul Goldsmith is ranked at nine and will take on the massive Economic Development and Regional Development areas, going head to head against Shane Jones and Economic Development Minister David Parker.

Nikki Kaye is at 10 and will keep the education portfolio. The top 10 is completed by current front benchers Jonathan Coleman, who keeps Health, Bridges, deputy Paula Bennett and Finance spokeswoman Amy Adams.

Bennett has Social Investment, Tertiary Education and Women.

Botany College students stranded at Whitford

Science superhero is out to change the world

round 40-50 parents of students studying at Botany Downs Secondary College are up in arms over the loss of a bus route.

And rightly so, says principal of the college Karen Brinsden.

Residents of Whitford were surprised to discover at the beginning of the year that there is no public school bus service from Whitford Village beyond the Somerville roundabout.

“There is a bit of a history behind it,” says Ms Brinsden.

“In the year 2013 there was an overlap in the enrolment zone of Howick College and Botany College.

Parents could choose which school they wanted their children to be enrolled in.

“But now there is a lot of tension as the Transport Zone is different from the Enrolment Zone.”

Ms Brisden is annoyed because there has been no formal consultation from Auckland Transport (AT) or from Auckland Council apart from the generic notice late last year on the change of school bus routes.

“Sadly the distance from Whitford is not viable for the children to walk or cycle since there are no footpaths in the area which is an 80km/h -100km/h road.

Wanting to find a solution for children left stranded in Whitford, Ms Brinsden contacted Howick & Eastern Buses as well as AT and is still waiting to hear from them. Desperate parents also contacted the MP for Hunua Andrew Bayly.

Broomfields Road resident Greg Walker, who has a son at Shelly Park Primary and daughter at Botany Downs Secondary College thinks it’s ridiculous that while his son is allowed to hop onto the school bus, his daughter cannot board the same bus. “If you are zoned for that school, the bus should pick up our kids and take them to school. No way am I

going to let my daughter walk the 100km/h road which is so dangerous,” Mr Walker says.

“They have given up replacing the guard due to the number of accidents. It is a disaster zone,” he says.

“Both the parents can’t have full time jobs because you are all the time looking at the clock and don’t want to be late to pick up your children. The school will miss out if they are not proactive since a lot of parents are talking about pulling their children out of the school next term and admitting them to Howick College. Botany College may miss out on students,” he says.

On being contacted by the Times AT spokesman James Ireland sent an Eastern Buses route map with a brief note saying: “Attached document is route 739 from Beachlands to Botany, an equivalent service.”

To which Ms Brinsden promptly responded saying: “Bus route 739 is not the equivalent, of the former school bus run for Botany students.

“Previously there were three buses, one bus picked up students along Trig Road, another bus picked up students along Broomfields and Griggs Road, and a third bus picked students up from the Clifton Potts loop,” she pointed out.

“These three buses met at Whitford Park where one bus brought them to school through Whitford Village to the Somerville rounda-

bout and on to school.

“Current bus 739 only services the Whitford-Maraetai road, turning left at the Whitford Village to Sandstone on to Ormiston and arriving at Botany Town Centre.

“There is no link to tie up all the students in those three different areas in Whitford, to bring them from Whitford up towards the Somerville roundabout and in to school from that direction.”

Hunua MP Andrew Bayly says that Botany Downs Secondary School principal and he have been working together to come up with a shortterm solution.

“We approached GoBus to provide a service and were told that it would cost around $5.50 per day.

“The previous service cost $1.16 per day, so naturally the parents of the 40-50 affected students chose not to take up the GoBus offer,” he says.

“Subsequently I have brought the matter to the attention of both Education Minister Chris Hipkins and Associate Education Minister Jenny Salesa who has direct responsibility for bus services – but to no avail.

“This is incredibly frustrating.

(Principal) Karen Brinsden has provided all the relevant information and expressed the need for the matter to be resolved quickly, yet the Associate Education Minister does not see the need for urgency.”

Passionate about introducing children to science and technology live on stage as well as on radio and television, the researcher and scientist shared her captivating story at a high tea fundraiser organised

by Women in Rotary, at the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre, Lloyd Elsmore Park, at the weekend.

“If you want to get something, don’t stop at the first closed door.

Sneak around the back, that’s what I did,” she said about the time she didn’t get into a top university in the US. She refused to take no for an answer.

Dickinson believes that it’s often adversity that teaches people about their greatest strengths.

Shrugging off a long list of awards that include being awarded Member of NZ Order of Merit, winner of Women of Influence for Science and Innovation 2016, the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award 2016 and the Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication Prize, the unconventional scientist spoke of the school of hard knocks.

“My parents were young when they met at a bar, and then they had me. We were poor and I didn’t have any books to read. My mother would often turn on the music and didn’t understand why I needed to study and get good grades as well as work and support my younger brother,” she said.

Her interest in science was sparked as she watched her dad soldering circuits on the dining table.

“We couldn’t afford a toaster. So the first time we got one home, I thought it was magical.

“How could a machine pop up such beautifully browned toasts, I wondered!”

Before long her fascination turned to curiosity and she couldn’t stop herself from dismantling the toaster to find out what lies beneath.

There was a definite pattern in there as she later broke laptops and cell phones to find out what made them work.

This celebrity scientist, who rubs shoulders with the likes of Richard Branson, has intentionally chosen a pathway that bypasses the traditional closed door meetings that

nerdy scientists have with government and policy makers. Instead, she reaches out directly to children and educators to inculcate a love of science out of the classroom.

The founder-director of social enterprise Nanogirl Labs is also the author of No 8 Recharged. Her latest offering is a glossy hardcover of Kitchen Science cookbook for children with recipes they can experiment with their mothers and grandmothers.

Michelle admits that she has taken a huge personal financial risk for this publication.

“I believe in taking risks about things I am passionate about,” said the girl who at the age of six wanted to fly and be a super woman.

Now older and wiser she said: “Surround yourself with likeminded people and work on that inner voice which says ‘you are not good enough’.

“Start the day saying you are awesome,” she enthused a day before she flew to Hong Kong to launch the Nanogirl Lab where she will trains teachers, children and educators with the idea of developing the next generation of inventors and innovators.

MSO celebrates 25 years ■ BY THERESE HENKIN Award-winning conductor Ray Chan will be back on home turf next week for the Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s (MSO) 25th anniversary.

The Macleans College alumni will lead the orchestra’s celebration show ‘Dance and Sing’ which kicks off on Saturday 17 March at the Vodafone Events centre.

Chan says he is excited to bring spectacular classical and modern music to the people of Manukau in this high energy show.

“This concert is definitely a little out of the ordinary and has a little something for everybody,” he says.

The orchestra will be performing Rossini’s William Tell Overture, selections from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto and Arias by Mozart and Puccini, among others in a show that promises to capture the hearts of the entire audience.

While this is Chan’s first collaboration with the MSO, he has experience leading the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Chan’s big break came when he competed in the Vienna Mastercourse Competition and paved the way to him being the first New Zea-

Joint rescue sees pair home safely Two men are safe after their small aluminium boat overturned in Mellons Bay, near Howick on Friday.

A member of the public notified police at 6.49pm when he spotted the pair in trouble.

They had been in the water for 15 minutes. The police Eagle helicopter crew located the men while an Auckland Police Maritime Unit rigid-hulled inflatable boat made its way to the bay. A local ferry

Howick couple never imagined they’d have to work out precisely how much a teaspoon of peanut butter and a single slice of toast costs.

By this week, Wayne Erb and Ping Sim will be doing exactly that as part of Tearfund’s Live below the Line challenge.

Wayne and Ping will experience this first hand, what around 767 million people experience every day by living off $2.85 a day for five days.

The Live below the Line Campaign raises money to enable some of the world’s most vulnerable communities to form self-help groups and farming co-operatives, which provide sustainable income opportunities and help reduce poverty. “$2.85 is less than a cup of coffee. It’s powerful to realise that what we experience for five days is a challenge faced by one in 10 humans every day,” Ping says.

So far the couple are top of the leader board having raised more than $1000, which started with a $5 donation from their six-yearold son, Shi Ming.

“We’ve always been interested in donating to charities, but we really wanted to do something practical that our boys could see,” Wayne says.

“This way we start having those conversations with them at a young age.”

Parliament is launching an electronic petitions system to make it easier for people to have their say.

It’s part of a number of online changes that will also make the Parliament website mobile-phone friendly.

Clerk of the House of Representatives David Wilson says petitions are a way to seek changes to a law or raise an issue, when no other remedies are available. Petitions are addressed to the House of Representatives and ask that it do something about a policy or a law, or put right a local or private concern.

“You can create and lodge a petition on the Parliament website. The electronic petitions page is easy to follow and help will be provided at each step to make sure it meets the rules of the House and the intent of the petition is clear.”

New Zealand has a strong tradition of petitions. The most famous are the series of petitions calling on Parliament to give women the vote.

The largest petition, submitted to Parliament on 28 July 1893, was signed by about 24,000 women. It was made up of more than 500 individual

Theatre dedicated to former principal H

owick College has re-opened its newly-refurbished school theatre.

Originally opened in 1983, the building has been named to honour the second principal of the school, and performing arts supporter, Bill Dimery.

Teachers were joined by former staff members, including former heads of English, dance, music and drama, to celebrate the Bill Dimery Performing Arts Centre, and all enjoyed the chance to share memories of past school productions and events held in the building.

Mr Dimery was joined by his family and was deeply touched by the event. The gathering included entertainment from dance and music students who were joined by some talented alumni of the school, two of whom reprised their roles from musical productions from their time at Howick College.

English teacher Geraldine Jamieson joined Howick College as head of drama in 1991, the same year Mr Dimery took on the principalship.

“I thought I was the luckiest person alive to have a principal who not only backed me every step of the way, but who was totally enthusiastic, passionate and supportive of whatever crazy idea the drama team and I came up with,” she says.

Mr Dimery’s passion for performing arts saw him take on the role of musical director and pianist for the school’s 1992 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Zero benefit from zero-fees policy

he government’s new policy of giving tertiary students their first year at university for free has backfired, with Universities New Zealand recently confirming no rise in new enrolments, while facing an increase in processing costs.

This is disappointing, especially given the massive price tag associated with the policy, and the government should be rethinking their plan to extend it to three years by 2024. If the policy is providing no benefit at great cost, what is the point?

Many universities are also reporting an increase in costs associated with processing enrolments, largely due to confusion around eligibility and how to apply, as well as hundreds of extra IT hours spent attempting to handle the change.

The main reason Labour introduced this policy was to encourage students to pursue tertiary education who otherwise might be put off by the cost. The fact that we have seen no increase in enrolments as a result means the government is spending money fixing a problem that doesn’t exist.

They seem to have ignored the fact that tertiary education in New Zealand was already among the most accessible in the world, due to existing policies like interest-free loans and weekly allowances for students from lowincome families that don’t have to be paid back.

“I’m going to play everything that’s been in my mind for the last two years since I came back to New Zealand to live close to my daughter and granddaughter. I’ve studied lots of music in this time and absorbed the sounds from trips to far away places.

If you’re looking for a play to take your mother or grandmother along to, or if you simply consider yourself a bit of a prude, I wouldn’t recommend this play.

However if you enjoy a rollercoaster of emotions, including a good laugh, some risqué humour and some rather intense drama, then I highly recommend getting yourself down to Howick Little Theatre’s latest production of Cruise Control.

Written by David Williamson and directed by Nathan Hey, Cruise Control follows three bickering couples as they board a cruise ship travelling from London to New York for seven days of marital healing.

They board with the hope of escaping their reality, but instead find themselves trapped in the hellish world of designated dinner seating and B-grade cabaret.

I’ve tried so hard to pick out a favourite moment from the play or even a stand out performance, but I just can’t do it.

Each character was portrayed so well and each offered so much to the story that I couldn’t possibly pick and choose.

However, the hilariously clashing personalities of Darren Brodie (James Calverley) and Richard Manton (Arthur Young) alone are worth the trip - and Sanjay Menon (Charlie the waiter) performed incredibly strongly in his first play with the theatre.

So pack your bags, grab your passport and climb aboard at Howick Little Theatre for the cruise of your life - you’ll only regret not going sooner.

Hauraki Gulf in sobering state, says new report ■ BY THERESE HENKIN Fisheries are dwindling and water quality is dismal as pressure on the Hauraki Gulf increases.

The State of the Gulf report was released recently and highlights a number of issues facing the gulf with poor water quality, ecosystem decline and poor fish stocks a major concern.

Rapid population growth, overfishing and insufficient infrastructure are responsible for the gulfs poor state says chair of the Hauraki Gulf Forum John Tregidga.

“We’re not catching less fish, we’re not milking less cows and we’re certainly not building less homes,” he says.

“Pressure on the gulf is increasing, and investment and infrastructure and new policy directions are not keeping pace.”

And climate change is only adding to the problem, he says.

The oceans are getting

warmer and more acidic leaving the gulf vulnerable to invasive species.

Increased erosion and sediment collecting in the ocean are a result of rising sea levels and heavy storms.

Half Moon Bay local and president of the Recreational Fishing Council Keith Ingram says the problem continues because nobody wants to face up to the problem and make the hard decisions. “Auckland Council and other councils are still condoning the continued discharge of both urban and agricultural run-off into the Hauraki Gulf.”

Ingram, who has worked and fished in the gulf all his life, says chemicals and pathogens are being washed into the gulf and are responsible for destroying the habitat.

“We are having heavier storms and our storm water drains can’t cope so we have lots of waste washing out into the gulf.”

Sewage and road waste such as oil and heavy metals

are some of many things that are being washed into our storm water systems and overflowing into the gulf.

Alongside this, rural runoff from the Hauraki plains is increasing with fertilisers and nitrates also making their way into the gulf.

“All of these things are playing a part in destroying the environment,” Ingram says.

“Then to add salt to injury we have our fisheries that are struggling because their habitat is changing and they don’t like it or can’t survive here,” he says.

The report identifies that snapper and crayfish populations are down by 70 to 80 per cent in the gulf. “We are now seeing a very juvenile fishery of undersize fish and the commercial fishing industry is surviving on catching these undersize fish,” Ingram says.

The Hauraki Gulf Forum is calling for central and local government, as well as iwi, to work on an action plan for improving the state of the gulf.

t was a fine occasion to celebrate valuable services provided by the Pakuranga and Howick Budget Service Inc (PHBS) over the last three decades.

Marking their 30th birthday was a mix of old and new volunteers along with dedicated staff and chairman Tony Henning at Te Tuhi Centre, Pakuranga on Friday evening. Also joining them was the staff of the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Howick Local Board chair David Collings.

“Why on earth does Pakuranga need a budgeting service? Everyone is rich here.... was the impression people had,” said former chairperson Marj Silcock, as she spoke about the humble beginning of PHBS. “Our budgeting service had great difficulties in finding suitable premises with the first one being at a car park in a small shed standing—which is now the warehouse.

“PHBS was initially supervised and coordinated by Margot Keesing who was a real pioneer, I followed her, a couple of years

later and worked for 12 years,” she said.

Later in 1995, PHBS moved in to share the premises with Pakuranga CAB. Another long time financial mentor, Peter, traced the history of the organisation at a time when a group of seven people with a shared vision of compassion met up to set a budgeting service to help the people and community of Pakuranga area.

What was then known as the Pakuranga Home Management and Budgeting Centre held meetings under the auspices of the Department of Social Welfare in Pakuranga.

Talking about the sea change in the way they now operate was Soraiya Daud, communications advisor for National Building Financial Capability Charitable Trust.

“We don’t want people to come to us in a crisis mode, desperately trying to get out of a hole that gets deeper. Instead we now look at strengthening their financial capability and follow it up so that they don’t get to that place,” she said.

A cake was cut; drinks and nibbles were served, as guests acknowledges the long history of the free financial service provided by tireless volunteers to the less fortunate.

Collaborations benefit NZ Inc

niversities New Zealand has this month released a new Deloitte Access Economics report that assesses the benefits of international collaboration between New Zealand and overseas universities.

It finds that collaboration on joint research, and the active encouragement of staff and student exchanges between them, bring strong economic benefits for the public.

The report, Assessing returns on international collaboration, was commissioned from Deloitte Access Economics by Universities New Zealand in order to get a better understand-

ing of how international collaborations of all types can benefit New Zealand.

The sorts of international collaboration activities assessed have a good economic return over a 15 year period as they are shown to generate knowledge and ideas that transfer to businesses and government and that, in turn, lift economic activity.

“We know that there are significant benefits to be had from collaborating with overseas partners, but until now it has been relatively difficult to quantify just what those benefits are, and how they translate to the wider economy and society,” says Universi-

ties New Zealand executive director Chris Whelan.

“New Zealand taxpayers pay for a fair proportion of this collaboration activity through Government funding. It is important for us to be able to defend this investment and to prove its value.”

The key economic returns from every $1 invested into international collaboration after 15 years are: • $2.46: International research collaboration – where academics and research teams from separate countries jointly produce academic research.

n November 15th 1847 the first ship-load of Fencibles, from the Minerva, were transferred to the Government brig Victoria, with their wives and children and were brought ashore at Waipaparoa-Howick Beach.

Near the Uxbridge stream on the tussock covered shell flats, two temporary 100 foot long sheds, one for women and children and another, well separated, for men.

They had been quickly erected by four carpenters and nine labourers from the Minerva and the Sir Robert Sale [who included Scotsman Lachlan McInness from a well-known family and John Trimmer, who later ran the ferry boat to Auckland] who were sent to Waipaparoa–Howick beach 10 days earlier to prepare for about 800 new immigrants.

The accommodation was promised to be “good and comfortable but all unnecessary expense was to be avoided”. James White called it “an apology for a pig sty” as gaps were filled with bundles of tea tree or raupo. There was a sergeant in-charge of each building, family cooking areas were allocated, and all lights out by 9pm. Some preferred to sleep in the nearby

Some women put up sheeting screens for their family. They were told in Britain that a two-roomed wooden cottage would be ready for them plus a quarter of their acre allotments cleared ready for planting. Nothing was ready for them! But it was better than life back in Ireland during the Famine.

Within a few days the St John’s college vessels Undine and schooner Marian arrived with timbers for All Saints Church, and Joseph Hargreaves loaned his bullocks and cart to carry them up the hill. The church was to have been taken to St Stephens School in Parnell but there was a greater need in Howick. Rev Fisher and Rev Lloyd took services until Rev Lush arrived in December 1850. Vicesimus Lush saw the Minerva after leaving Auckland taking ballast to Hong Kong on December 2nd. The

All Saints School started in October 1848.

In May 1848, the Roman Catholic church schooner, bringing timbers for their school and temporary chapel, ran into a storm and was wrecked near Howick. Fr. Antoine Marie Garin, the first catholic priest arrived on 2nd January 1848 to organise those in his care. In the last year he has been nominated for sainthood by the Catholic authorities. Before Fr. Garin arrived Captain Alexander MacDonald probably took their Sunday services, as he had done on the Sir Robert Sale. Fr. Garin immediately planted grapes in his Picton Street allotment for communion wine.

He had a horse and cart, hens, a cow, and bee hives plus two Maori assistants. The Government gave him 3/- (three shillings) a day for care of his horse. Fr. Garin became the Howick community leader accepted by all denominations.

The wooden “Our Lady Star of the Sea” church was erected in Picton Street 1854 beside the school classroom. The wooden church was replaced by a larger stone building in 1960.

SPCA fundraiser

The New Zealand Community Trust has awarded numerous grants in the Auckland region in February including these to local groups.

Fencibles United AFC was granted $15,000 which will go towards the salary of the director of football, Howick Brass was granted $3000 towards airfares to attend 2018 NZ National Brass Bands Championships and Pigeon Mountain Primary School was granted $10,000 towards a canopy shade system.

Gaming venues that contributed to these grants included Barrel Inn in Howick and Xtreme Botany at Northpark.

Dog owners and their pups are invited to the Good Home on Picton Street this Sunday for a special SPCA fundraiser. You can spoil your dogs with a puppychino or purchase delicious homemade dog treats, with all proceeds going to the SPCA. You will also be in to win spot prizes throughout the day. The fundraiser is on from 2pm on Sunday, March 18.

Polyfest This year’s ASB Polyfest will see more than 10,000 secondary school students from across the Auckland region perform traditional song, dance and speech on one of the festival’s six stages. The event will be held at the Manukau Sports Bowl from March 14-17.

Uxbridge Showcase Uxbridge Arts & Culture will feature a classical showcase evening on April 5 as part of the Taste of Uxbridge week. The week will feature free workshops, demonstrations, artist talks and a whole load of musical events. The Classical Showcase will give local musicians the opportunity to be part of an evening of music. The search is on for local Classical performers of all ages to come forward and send their videos in before Friday, March 9.

Fundraiser for Howick Coastguard On March 7, David Inglis and Sue Mist of the Howick Little Theatre organised a fundraiser evening at the Howick Little Theatre, with the profits going to the Howick Coastguard. The current play Cruise Control, set on a cruise ship, seemed like an appropriate fit with the Coastguard said the organisers.

The evening, which included supper and raffles, raised $1100 for the local Coastguard. Howick Coastguard president Alan Martin said their rescue boat engine repairs.

“Booking the theatre for a night is a great way of fundraising, and the theatre is very supportive of your efforts. It’s a win/win situation – the theatre benefits from a full house mid-week and the organizers can raise in excess of $1000,” said Mist.

lot of people think if they have bought a faulty product or service they are stuck with it and it’s simply money gone down the drain.

But that is not always the case. As a consumer you should be aware of your basic rights.

The Fair Trading Act (FTA) protects you as a consumer, from misleading and deceptive actions, false representations and unfair practices by traders. Under the FTA, a business is not allowed to: ➤➤Mislead consumers about the nature of the product ➤➤Give false information about their product ➤➤Use unfair trading practices ➤➤Make unsubstantial claims about a product ➤➤Include unfair contract terms in its standard consumer contracts The FTA also requires traders wanting to sell extended warranties, to disclose information about the extended warranty to the consumer.

The FTA covers all advertising and selling of goods and services by traders, but doesn’t cover private sales.

What does the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) cover?

Whenever you buy consumer goods or services in New Zealand from a trader – which is usually bought for personal, domestic or household use – you are covered

by CGA. You are not covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act when you buy privately.

When you buy goods for personal, domestic or household use, they are covered by the following guarantees: ➤➤They have to be of acceptable quality and last for a reasonable time (taking into account the nature of the seller and the where you bought the goods e.g. if you buy second hand goods you would not expect them to be of the same quality and durability as new goods of the same type) ➤➤They have to be fit for their particular purpose ➤➤They have to match their description ➤➤They have to match the showroom model ➤➤They manufacturer or importer must take reasonable steps to provide spare parts and repair facilities for a reasonable time after you purchase the goods ➤➤From 17 June 2014 there is a guarantee of timely delivery, which means that, where a supplier is arranging the delivery of the goods, they must ensure that the consumer receives them in the

Eastern beaches sales begin to ease Sales

East Auckland suburbs have generally experienced substantial growth in average sales price since 2012, according to Crockers’ Property Market Research released this month.

Overall, Eastern Suburbs have the highest median sales price in 2018 in the east Auckland region at $1,579,000. This has increased 96 per cent since 2012. The largest percentage increase came from Ellerslie/ Panmure, which has experienced an increase of 108 per cent since 2012.

Eastern Beaches have the lowest percentage change since 2012 (90 per cent). In 2012 the median sales price in this area was $560,757 and this has increased to $1,066,875 in the past year ending January 2018.

Overall, the average number of sales has remained fairly consistent for the suburbs of Ellerslie/Panmure since 2010. Eastern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs average number of sales has started to drop. The average number of sales in Eastern Beaches has dropped 32 per cent since 2016 from 186 to 127, whilst the average number of sales has decreased from 157 to 112 in the Eastern Suburbs.

Average rents across east Auckland remain just below the average for the greater Auckland region (Pukekohe to Rodney). Auckland median prices and sales numbers The median sales price for Auckland residential properties has experienced a small decrease over the summer months, from $855,000 in December to $800,000 in January.

This decrease is seen on an annual basis. Last summer there was a decrease from $840,000 in December to $805,000 in January. Meanwhile, sales volume decreased from 1782 to 1353. Similar decreases in sales volume also take place during this period each year.

Auckland rental prices

The average Auckland rent for 2-bedroom residential properties has decreased slightly this month from $489 to $488, while the average 2-bedroom rental across New Zealand has increased slightly to $396. This resulted in the Auckland 2-bedroom premium decreasing slightly to 23 per cent.

The average rent for 3-bedroom properties in Auckland decreased slightly from $621 to $619, while average rents across New Zealand increased from $470 to $471 – resulting in the Auckland 3-bedroom premium decreasing slightly to 31 per cent.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore, Housing Minister Phil Twyford and Minister for Building and Construction Jenny Salesa this month committed to Government working with the Mayor’s Housing Taskforce to increase the pace and scale of house building in Auckland.

The commitment sees the Mayor’s Housing Taskforce, a multi-sector group comprising private sector housing supply organisations and public sector agencies, become a key forum for reviewing, developing and assisting with the implementation of housing policy to better address housing shortages and unaffordability in Auckland. Work will commence on reviewing specific elements of the Building Act, the Building Code and the building product assurance system to produce quick wins that can deliver more homes in Auckland, a media release from the mayor’s office

said. The Taskforce will also assist with the delivery of the Government’s Kiwibuild programme in Auckland.

“The recommendations from the Housing Taskforce closely align with the programmes outlined by the Ministers,” Mayor Phil Goff said.

“Today’s agreement ensures the right people from across the housing supply chain, council and government are in the room working together to build more houses in Auckland.

“We all share the view that the current regulatory regime for building products is not fit for purpose and holding development back.”

The Housing Taskforce will work with Government to review existing building regulations to support innovation in construction and land use, most notably modular, offsite and pre-fab construction for medium density housing, the mayor said. ➤➤Continued on page 15

The bright new feature of the house While it was a well kept, original 1970s kitchen, it was quite dark and small with an archway that boxed in an old kitchen.

“Earlier there was not much storage space but now it is very tidy and we have fitted in an open servery with reverse cabinets that act as a deeper island and provides lots more storage space.

Kay Pe and Helen Tsui, the new, young owners of a home in Mount Wellington, spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

They felt that they needed more space with additional light in an area they spend 60 to 70 per cent of their time.

And yet, the kitchen had to fit in with the architecture of the 1970s home with good bones.

“We wanted a bigger and brighter kitchen,” says Kay, an engineer who spent time with his wife planning the kitchen.

The young couple that has just moved into their new home, a week prior to writing this article, say that with the kitchen being the focal point of the house, “we wanted something that suits our family needs.”

Kay’s wife Helen, a clinical psychologist felt that an openplan kitchen would help her to keep an eye on her 15-monthold-baby Caitlyn whilst cooking.

“It’s reassuring for Caitlyn to see me whilst I am busy in the

kitchen. I didn’t want her to have a feeling of concern that she is far away from me,” she says.

With a fair idea of what they were looking for, they approached Jag Kitchens.

Having worked with kitchen designer Megan Dyer from Jag Kitchens to re-design and open up the kitchen as well as the laundry, the couple is very pleased with the result.

The young professionals who earlier lived with Kay’s parents, say that the colour scheme — a white kitchen with contrasting cabinetry that has a timber-like look, goes well with the style of the house and yet gives the kitchen a modern look.

An energy-efficient induction cooktop with a silent rangehood which is a far cry from an old fashioned cooktop that was originally housed in one corner of the kitchen has Kay talking about the advancement of technology.

“It’s amazing that we can now buy a rangehood for the same amount that we did years ago — but only with much better features these days,” he says.

“We wanted a dishwasher to be accommodated in the kitchen so we thought about the way we cook and rearranged everything,” adds Helen.

The push-touch doors and soft closing drawers make sure that the kitchen is child friendly.

Skilled kitchen designer, Megan says, she had a good idea about modifying and enhancing everything in the kitchen.

“There is much more bench space with a wider island that can serve as a buffet table.

It is a small kitchen so we had to be quite resourceful when it came to designing and placement of cabinets,” says Megan The kitchen features a marble vein bench top which is Uniquartz Light Vein Quartz.

“The cabinets are predominantly Melteca Arctic Ice gloss. The contrasting cabinets are in Bestwood Tawa,” she says.

“The wood grain fits in well with the character of the house,” Megan says about the modern and contemporary kitchen that is now the bright, new feature of the house.

onderful wins by the Blues and Warriors over the Lions and South Sydney respectively has given hope to rugby union and league fans whose loyalty has been severely tested for too many years.

Both teams surpassed expectations with the Blues snatching a thrilling lastgasp 38-35 win at high altitude Johannesburg’s Ellis Park and the Warriors fully deserving of their 32-20 triumph in the Perth heat.

It was a huge relief for Tana Umaga (Blues) and Stephen Kearney (Warriors) who have captained their country as outstanding players only to run into too many speed bumps as coaches.

Hopefully the worm has turned.

Having lost their first two games of the Super Rugby season against the Highlanders and Chiefs, few gave the Blues a chance with them having to travel to South Africa to take on 2016 and 2017 finalists, the Lions, who

lost both championships to the Hurricanes and Crusaders respectively.

But the Blues showed character, improved cohesion and real depth off the bench to finish strongly with substitutes Jimmy Tupou and Murphy Taramai scoring tries in the wake of two from Rieko Ioane and a beauty from brother, Akira.

Akira deservedly won man of the match honours for his brilliant attack, high work rate and aggressive defence.

What was most pleasing beyond his work rate was a lower body position that offered a smaller target for defenders trying to cope with his power and footwork.

However the Blues had to work hard to overcome a 21-10 halftime deficit with a Sonny Bill Williams dropped ball from the kick-off giving the Lions a scrum from which they scored.

eventually led to Taramai’s match-winner.

It was one of the few times Williams hit the line at pace, thereby limiting opportunities for centre partner Rieko Ioane whose class still netted him two tries.

Another to shine when given his chance off the bench was young Taranaki first-five Stephen Perofeta who has a sharp rugby brain and calm disposition to complement his dancing feet.

It was a a nice cameo for a player recovering from a broken hand although it must be conceded starting firstfive Bryn Gatland performed well in all three games he has played.

With the Hurricanes shocking the Crusaders 29-19 with a fast start and celebrating a welcome return by tal-

ented Jordie Barrett and the Highlanders hammering the Stormers 33-15 it was a good weekend for NZ teams.

Meanwhile there was much joy for Warriors fans after their team started the season looking and acting much fitter and stronger than they did last season when they lost their last nine games.

Although their lack of discipline resulted in them conceding too many penalties, they have made some smart buys in signing Tohu Harris, Blake Green and Adam Blair although the latter had a quiet game.

Especially pleasing was the return to form and fitness of Issac Luke who made several elusive darts from dummy half and the jinky running of scrum half Shaun Johnson.

Crowe celebrates big medal haul Pakuranga College Year 9 student Ella Crowe has ranked first in New Zealand in her age group at the New Zealand Junior Swimming Festival.

The festival is run in four regions and medals awarded to New Zealand’s top junior swimmer.

Ella took home four golds, three silvers and three bronze medals making her the top ranked swimmer in the Auckland zone in her age group.

Ella trains exceptionally hard with eight sessions a week at two hours per session. Her favourite discipline is freestyle and her ultimate dream is to compete at the Olympics.

etirement village providers Metlifecare have promised to replace a troublesome lift at the Pakuranga Village following complaints from residents that the existing lift is unsafe.

However residents aren’t confident they will see this promise carried out anytime soon.

On February 22 the Times reported that residents were criticising Metlifecare for failing to replace a “dangerous lift” that regularly breaks down and has trapped residents inside several times.

The only alternative to the 19-yearold lift is an outdoor staircase which residents say becomes “dangerously slippery” when it rains.

Long-time resident Irene McFarlane says residents have been asking for the lift to be replaced and the stairs to be covered for several years, without any luck.

She says while she is hopeful a lift replacement will come soon, she isn’t holding her breath.

She says she hopes Metlifecare don’t ignore the option of turning the current staircase into a covered, indoor stairwell.

“We understand that replacing the lift is not going to be a quick and easy fix but, in the meantime, they need to cover the staircase so we aren’t battling the weather every time it rains.”

McFarlane says the irony is that the stairs are only hazardous in wet weather, which is also the biggest cause of the lift break downs.

“The stairs as they are aren’t a safe alternative. The steps and handrails become so slippery that one misstep could cause serious harm,” she says.

“But I see why they think this, because the only time anyone comes to inspect the stairs is when the weather is good.”

General manager operations Richard Callander says they are committed to resolving the residents’ concerns and are aiming to replace the lift within months rather than years.

“While the lift and stairs at Pakuranga village are operationally safe, we have escalated the investi-

gation into the lift and can confirm that engineers, our independent lift consultant and our Group Maintenance Manager have reviewed the lift on site and have commenced investigating options for a suitable replacement,” he says.

“Lifts are bespoke and must be made overseas to fit the specific site, hence they can take months to be made and installed.

“We therefore are not yet in a position to commit to a date of replace-

ment.”

Callander says they are not yet in a position to confirm an exact date of replacement.

McFarlane says Metlifecare doesn’t want to commit to replacing the lift within a certain timeframe so that it can’t be held accountable when it takes too long to replace.

“We have been asking for the lift to be replaced for so long - why would it all of a sudden fall into place in a matter of months now?”

She wonders what the residents are expected to do in the meantime.

“We can’t wait around for a new lift if we’ve got another couple of winters to go with the only alternative an uncovered staircase,” she says.

McFarlane herself has fallen down the hazardous stairs in 2012, from which she still suffers ongoing issues.

Following complaints, Metlifecare have since recoated the stairs with new non-slip treads on February 28, but McFarlane says the treads have already started peeling off at the edges.

McFarlane says its “frustrating seeing them do so little” when an easier solution would be to cover in the stairs and then focus on replacing the lift knowing that the residents can safely access the second level in the meantime.

“I know that legally they are probably doing everything that they need to, but we need to keep in mind that their business is old people and at some point you would expect them to be morally obligated to do more than what they are currently doing,” she says.

Callander says Metlifecare is currently investigating options to improve the stair and access experience to this part of the village.

He says however these improvements are very much at preliminary stages of investigation, and would be subject to design work and council consent.

Residents are still waiting to receive official confirmation that a lift replacement is being considered, Macfarlane said.

HPCC tops points table Howick Pakuranga (HPCC) completed a solid first innings victory over Papatoetoe in their Hedley Howarth –Top Four Premier clash at the weekend, with the game going deep into the fourth innings on Sunday.

HPCC’s Jim Allnatt said the result was a big deal for the club.

“It was a nail-biter of a match but we got first innings points and didn’t lose outright although we were 9 down and it has put us eight points clear in the premier two-day championship with one match to play against East Coast Bays next week.

“It’s still touch-and-go but, if we do it, it will be the first time since 1993-94 that we have.

This in spite of having eight players in either the Aces or Black Caps so we are hoping things go right over the next two weeks.”

Heimgartner crowned NZ V8s champion D

annemora’s Andre Heimgartner has claimed the 2018 BNT V8s Championship following a strong and consistent end to what was an impressive season in the New Zealand touring car category.

The final round at Hampton Downs this weekend (March 9-11) saw the 22-yearold Kiwi put in a solid performance despite suffering a lack of power in his Richards Team Motorsport Camry to claim the top honours.

After taking second position in Saturday’s race one, the Melbourne-based Supercars driver needed to only finish fifth in each of Sunday’s two races to secure the title.

Heimgartner got that campaign off to a great start with fourth place in race two and was preparing to chase another top five in the final outing before the stewards intervened - handing his title rival and team-mate Jason Bargwanna a post-race penalty and removing the championship pressure from Heimgartner’s shoulders all together.

He would finish the final race of the weekend in fourth.

“To say I am happy with that result is an understatement, we went out there and did what we had to do, and brought home the championship,” Heimgartner said.

“Going into the final race of the weekend knowing that the title was secure was a relief, but with a fourth position we would have been okay either way which is good to know as well!

“Even though the title was wrapped up the goal is always to do the best we can - unfortunately we had a bit of a power issue this weekend which continued today, and I lost a mirror yesterday so that saw me be a bit conservative then; but at the end of the day what we had done over the course of the season and then again this weekend ensured we were in the box seat to bring it home.”

Heimgartner will head back to his Australian base to prepare with Nissan Motorsport for round two of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, the Australian Grand Prix from March 22-25.
