ecently Clevedon said goodbye to an iconic stalwart member of the community.

Ian Leslie Duder passed away peacefully on February 12 just hours after his 87th birthday.

The All Souls Anglican Church, where his funeral was held, was overflowing with all those who came to pay tribute to the man who spent his life caring for and serving the Clevedon community.

Ian grew up in Clevedon on his family’s beach front cottage at Duder’s Beach, and spent riding horses and helping out on his grandparent’s farm.

He attended the small Clevedon North School, and went on to study at Otahuhu College in High School.

It was here that he met Mary Jones, a Clevedon girl with whom he would start a lifelong romance.

But before they wed, Ian was drafted into the army and was selected for the NZ Army Contingent at the Queen’s Coronation.

Upon his return, with stories and photos from his fivemonth adventure, Ian married Mary, his high school sweetheart.

They settled on the family farm where they raised four children.

Ian was also remembered as an active conservationist with

a fierce love for the land which he openly shared with his family and wider community.

Over the years Ian, a fourth generation farmer, was involved in many local service organisations including local schools, the Scouts, church,

In 1995, when it came time for Ian to retire, he and the family decided to sell the farm to the Regional Council.

It would remain a farm park which could be used and

enjoyed by his family and the public for years to come.

Ian leaves behind a legacy that will live on in his children, his work for the community and in the land he held so dear to his heart, Duder Regional Park.

ith heavy backpacks and their first lesson to get to, seven Somerville Intermediate students were stranded at the bus stop on Tuesday morning thanks to an overcrowded bus.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened and parents suspect it won’t be the last.

Jatinder Sidhu says she waits with her daughter Samar at the bus stop every morning to make sure there’s enough room for her on the bus.

Samar, who is in her first year at Somerville Intermediate, catches the 434 bus from 470 Chapel Road which also services Botany Downs Secondary College, Howick Intermediate and Howick College during the school term.

“The buses that come through Chapel Road and Kilkenny Drive are always full,” Jatinder says.

“When the bus arrives children are either seated on the floor or standing all the way from the back of the bus to right next to the bus driver.”

On several occasions the bus has been so full that her daughter and several others from Somerville Intermediate have been left behind at the bus stop.

“The bus drivers sometimes have to stop more children from getting on and, rightly so, because children are so squished together they can hardly move,” she says.

“Somerville Intermediate has come to help many times by sending their school van to pick up the stranded students.”

The problem with this, she says, is that often by the time the Somerville van arrives, the kids are already late to school and miss part of their first class.

“It is a very sad state to see children in such a situation in the morning. They are about to

Jatinder says she and the other parents are starting their work days late because they can’t just leave their kids at the bus stop, in case the bus doesn’t take them.

There must be “little hope” for the children waiting at the five stops after her daughters, she says.

“We have tried to reach the school and (Auckland Transport) AT for help but we get told somebody will look into it and then nothing happens.”

Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan says AT monitors this service daily.

“We have the largest size bus available running these trips.

Our data shows these trips are very close to full capacity but not overloaded, apart from one instance when the original bus broke down and a smaller one replaced it,” he says.

Hannan says the Certificate of Loading allows up to 101 students in total, and AT data shows the highest count at 86 students.

He says there are clear markings on the bus to show passengers where they should and shouldn’t be standing.

“There are three other school buses that serve Somerville Intermediate that duplicate the 434 route to some extent – 433, 436 and 435,” he says.

“The 433 has quite a lot of capacity and covers the segment of Chapel Rd north of Kilkenny Dr. The other two services are also almost at capacity.”

Massive crowds ignore the rain for village’s first Howick Hop T

he organisers of the inaugural Howick Village Hop were thrilled with the turnout on what was to be the wettest day in months.

The crowds were large. It started early in the morning with the sound of V8s driving into Picton Street in convoy. People from far and wide came to view the cars on display and chat to the proud owners.

The People’s Choice award was won

by Phil Monaghan with his 1971 International Pick Up. Second prize Scott Lambert (1967 Chev El Camino), 3rd Prize Peter Duffy (1932 Ford Coupe).

Car enthusiasts of all ages braved the weather to come see the impressive lineup. The streets were bright with beautiful cars dating back to 1927 (Model T Roadster). Cameras and chamois were both out in full force.

The ladies were looking especially lovely as well, many sporting the 1950s Rockabilly styles. The hairstylists and airbrush tattoos were also a hit!

There were fine periods too.

Before they begin training each pup is assigned to a specific client and their training is refined to meet the unique needs of their new owner.

“Does the dog need specific go-gethelp training? Does the dog need to be trained to be on the bed at night for comfort? Does the dog need to be trained to find a child who has wandered off?

“Or does the dog need to be trained to sit beside a child while they play because they don’t have any friends?” says Tracy.

She say’s the earlier a child gets an assistance dog, the greater the benefits.

“About 90 per cent of our clients are children which is great because the dog is there to help them during their key stages of development, which can make all the difference,” she says.

Assistance Dogs NZ is a non-government funded charity, so they need your help.

They rely on donations from the community to breed, train and place assistance dogs in the homes that need them most.

“Unfortunately we are growing faster than we can meet the demand. We currently have a three-and-a-half year waiting list for our dogs,” Tracy says.

Residents raise voice against antisocial activity A group of about 30 residents braved the rain on Saturday morning as they converged on Tarnica Park in Northpark to publicly voice their concerns about ongoing anti-social activity at the green space.

The meeting was organised by locals Gordon and Maxine Luke with help from Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who’s working with the residents in an effort to address the problem.

It was attended by Howick Local Board members Garry Boles, Adele White, Mike Turinsky and board chairman David Collings.

Mr Ross and police sergeant Tim Riley encouraged residents to phone 111 and report all serious incidents at the park.

A petition was circulated and signed at the meeting calling for the local board to fund the installation of lights at the park to deter unruly youths and criminal activity.

Ross said, “It’s clearly a significant issue for members of the public to come out in the pouring rain because they are so frustrated with the problems happening in their local park.”

Dogs on duty rangling four black Labradors for a photoshoot was no easy feat.

They’re inquisitive, playful and full of energy.

But in between belly scratches and tug-o-war, these dogs have a very special job ahead of them.

Rocco, Raven, Rufus and Ryder are in training to become assistance dogs to help individuals whose lives are impacted by disability.

All in various stages of their six month training programme, they are learning basic obedience, social behaviour training, home behaviour training and specific task training.

“These dogs change lives. They give people living with disability the care and support they need, and also give them some of their independence back,” says trainer Tracy Huff.

Assistance Dogs NZ caters for a broad range of disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and even diabetes.

“Everybody’s situation is different which is why individualising our dogs’ training is very important,” she says.

Tracy says they look at what each dog is naturally good at, and play to their strengths.

She says some dogs have a flare to do certain things which lends itself to certain tasks.

“One dog might make an excellent autism support dog, while another might be perfect for someone with diabetes,” she says.

New Zealand is expanding its global ability to combat tax evasion by joining forces with authorities in 30 countries and jurisdictions.

Cabinet has agreed to add another 30 territories to the current list of 60 jurisdictions where New Zealand has informationsharing agreements as part of a global standard known as the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI).

“The addition of 30 new territories reflects increased international cooperation by OECD and G20 countries to crack down on tax evasion,” said Revenue Minister Stuart Nash.

“It further increases our ability to ensure all New Zealanders pay their fair share of tax, including those who have financial interests in other countries. It shines a spotlight on those who try to evade tax obligations by

These countries have enacted, or are expected to soon enact, legislation that enables them to send the same information to New Zealand. “The 30 new countries are spread around the globe, from the Caribbean to Europe, Asia, the Pacific, Africa and

the Middle East. The list includes jurisdictions such as Panama, Switzerland, Macao, the Cook Islands and Nigeria, said Nash.

The AEOI enables information sharing about details of accounts at many institutions, including banks, private equity funds, investment advisors and some brokers and trusts.

Inland Revenue will review the information and verify that correct tax

is being paid on offshore investments.

“New Zealand taxpayers are strongly advised to check they have correctly accounted for their offshore investments. If not, they should make a voluntary disclosure to Inland Revenue without delay,” said Nash.

“The Coalition Government is determined that our tax system should be fair. We will ensure trans-national financial activity does not seek to evade tax obligations. In 2018 we passed legislation to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, and have recently signalled our intention to ensure providers of digital services also meet their obligations.

“New Zealand supports the growing international consensus about the need to eliminate opportunities for tax evasion.”

Changes needed in mental health care N

ew Zealand is experiencing a mental health crisis and some of the numbers around this issue are staggering.

Almost 670 Kiwis took their own lives between July 2017 and June 2018.

That’s the highest number since records began and it was the fourth year in a row the number has risen.

The number of girls and women who died from suicide from 20172018 increased by 44 to 193.

More than 470 boys and men in New Zealand died from suicide during that period, which were 18 more than the previous year.

Each one of these deaths represents family torn apart and loved ones left to ask why they didn’t see the signs that something was wrong or whether they could have done something to help.

As I said recently in Parliament, the group with the highest suicide rates is men aged 25-44.

There’s a lot of attention given to our high youth suicide rate, but men need support as well.

Men aged 25-44 commit suicide four times more frequently than women in the same age group.

The issues of mental health and addiction were a major focus for the Labour Party during the last election campaign, but 18 months into the Government’s term in office we are yet to see any concrete action taken on these issues.

What they have done is launch an inquiry into it.

I urge the Government to identify gaps in New Zealand’s mental health care and I agree with the Mental Health Foundation’s recent submission to the Budget policy statement on this subject.

It said, in part, “We will not create better mental health within New Zealand by continuing with an imbalanced focus of resources on acute mental health services.

“Instead, New Zealand must increase its efforts in promoting wellbeing and preventing mental health problems from occurring.”

This is a complicated issue and it cannot be solved overnight, but it is something I intend to focus on as Botany’s MP. Our community is not immune from the trauma caused by selfharm.

Fatal Golflands crash: Driver named The driver involved in a four-carcrash that killed a 50-year-old man in east Auckland has been named.

Adam Michael Speir, 27, of Pakuranga, is alleged to have driven into a queue of cars while they waited at the traffic lights on Botany Road on January 28.

He allegedly hit the back of a car driven by father-of-two Zhengwen Alan Hu, who later died of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

A man died in a crash at Botany over Auckland Anniversary.

Picking up plastic to prevent marine pollution Spending a morning picking up rubbish was fun, said Emma Knight, a Year 10 student at Botany Downs Secondary College.

However, there was a serious reason why Emma and other students from BDSC gave up their morning to do this. It was an activity marking the start of national Sea Week.

“Eighty per cent of pollution in the sea comes from the land.

Plastic makes up much of this pollution and most of what the students picked up was plastic,” a school spokesperson said.

Walking around the streets near the college, students filled bags with rubbish. Small and large items were picked out of the gutters and off grass berms.

Inskter said police have attended many incidents over the years. Police said: “As it’s a question about the road, it’s really something for the roading authority (AT) to comment on.”

An Auckland Transport spokesperson: “NZTA designates certain routes that are suitable and recommended for what are called high productivity motor vehicles.

“This is not a recommended route but there is nothing legally to stop trucks using it. The road doesn’t appear to have a weight limit restriction.”

Clevedon woman has stopped short of calling for a total ban on heavy trucks on West Road following another incident involving a near miss on the narrow, twisty road.

Lianne Inkster has lived on the treacherous road for a quarter of a century and has seen it closed on numerous occasions over the years after trucks have blocked the road after failing to take the steep grade near her house.

On one occasion the power went out during the attempted rescue of a heavy truck.

Her patience is exhausted now. “I just about saw my daughter get wiped out by a truck.

“That’s why I rang council,” she said.

“You’re playing Russian Roulette – the truck-trailer just cut the corner.

“A lot of Clevedon residents would agree that West Road is too tight. It’s just dangerous. It’s too narrow.”

In early February “one massive trailer got stuck” on the steep grade outside her home.

Chef takes Kiwi cuisine to the world NZ Chefs Auckland president Jasbir Kaur is helping put New Zealand cuisine on the map, teaching budding chefs across America and Canada how to inject Kiwi flavour into their dishes.

“It is a real honour to be showcasing New Zealand’s unique cooking styles and ingredients on the global stage”, says Kaur, who is general manager of Ignite Colleges, home of Auckland’s newest cookery training programme.

This week Kaur, from Pakuranga, headed to Miami, Seattle, San Francisco and Vancouver, where she will represent New Zealand at leading international culinary arts schools, delivering Kiwi-inspired cooking demonstrations to the world’s future chefs.

Along with a large dose of Kiwi flavour (including horopito and pikopiko), Kaur plans to add a Spanish twist to her demonstration dishes.

Both are cuisines she is passionate about after working at Barcelona’s Michelin-starred Disfrutar and representing New Zealand at the World Tapas competition in Valladolid two years ago. Last year Ignite Colleges hosted the first ever Australasian Tapas competition, which saw the winner compete at the World Tapas event in Spain under Kaur’s expert guidance. ”I am very excited about sharing my expertise with chefs in the USA and Canada. I hope this will sow the seeds for them to learn more about Kiwi cuisine, and one day come down here to explore all our amazing country has to offer.”

While there, she will wow students with innovative dishes such as seabass cooked in manuka salt with olive and seaweed tapenade, infused with pikopiko, pickled tapioca pearls and cauliflower and horopito custard.

“This dish combines cooking techniques I learned at Disfrutar with New Zealand ingredients that many overseas chefs will not be familiar with.

They might think it is a bit unusual, but I am sure they are going to love it.”

Kaur – who will also be judging a culinary competition in Miami - hopes the tour will open up opportunities for American and Canadian chefs to visit New Zealand to deliver their own master classes and cooking demonstrations to Ignite Colleges’ Level 3, 4 and 5 students.

“At Ignite Colleges we deliver worldclass cookery training that prepares chefs not only for careers in New Zealand, but also to succeed on the global stage,” she says.

“Connecting with chefs around the world is a great way to promote our national cuisine offshore and help New Zealand’s future chefs gain the international exposure they need to succeed.”

On his graduation, he was awarded the highest honour “Summa Cum Laude”.

At Harvard, Zhou (Mansfield House 2010 – 2013) was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year (top 24 in class), named a John Harvard Scholar three years straight (top 5 per cent) and was the recipient of the Harris Prize for an outstanding combined record of achievement in studies, character and extra-curricular activity.

While at Harvard, Zhou also performed well in other areas. He was a member of the university choir, the general manager of Harvard Krokodiloes – Harvard’s oldest and finest a cappella singing group, a class marshal, and a volunteer tutor in the Boston community.

During his time at Macleans College, Zhou was named Macleans College Dux twice (2012 and 2013). He was deputy head boy, a peer support leader for Mansfield House, leader of choir, and cofounder of the News Committee.

In the 2010 CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) he achieved Top in New Zealand for IGCSE Global Perspectives and in the 2011 CIE he achieved Top in the World in AS Chemistry and AS

he New Zealand property market is in a good place and there was a sense of relative stability during the month of February”, said realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor.

“Unlike the Australian situation, where there’s reportedly a long-term high in the number of properties sitting on the market, that’s not the case here in New Zealand,” she said.

The total number of homes for sale nationally in February 2019 was 26,850, marginally down 0.3 per cent compared to the previous year.

Five years ago (February 2014) there were 41,731 homes listed for sale nationally as a comparison.

“We’ve been through the heady days of frantic activity and uncertainty and we have found our new normal,” said Taylor.

“It’s characterised by a steady market, stable pricing and a pragmatic approach by buyers and sellers.

“It’s a more stable environment where buyers and sellers can have more certainty and realistic expectations about what they can achieve in the current housing market.”

This level of stability and ongoing engagement in the New Zealand property market is reflected in the 1,037,347 unique browsers on realestate.co.nz during February, up 18.6 per cent up on the same period last year.

“It’s business as usual,” said Taylor.

“These numbers are consistent with summertime browsing even though it’s a shorter month.”

“As a result, we are seeing a slight adjustment in February, although four of the smaller regions still recorded all-time asking price highs in February (Waikato, Gisborne, Central North Island and Manawatu / Wanganui).” Across the country there is an ongoing see-saw for the top spot in average asking price between the Central-Otago Lakes region and the Auckland region.

“The Central Otago-Lakes area has climbed back up over the $1 million-plus mark in February, leapfrogging the Auckland region’s average asking prices once more,” said Taylor.

This is mainly due to some top end properties hitting the market in the Queenstown district.

All-time asking price highs in four regions

Nationally, real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that compared to February 2018, there was a 6.5 per cent fall in new listings (to 10,535 listings) and a drop of only 0.3 per cent in total listings (to 26,850 listings) in February 2019.

Of the five main regions, only the Wellington region recorded an increase in new listings in February (up 6.9 per cent compared to the previous year, representing 886 new listings).

In the smaller regions, new listings in Central-Otago Lakes were up 11.8 per cent (to 209 listings) and the West Coast region was up 7.6 per cent (totalling 71 new listings) compared to the same time last year.

Of the other smaller regions, 11 recorded decreases in new listings in February compared with February 2018.

Once again, it was the smaller regions which dominated new records in average asking price highs.

The Gisborne region led the charge, with a 6.7 per cent increase in average asking price to $445,938 compared to January 2019.

This was followed by the Waikato region (the only major region to hit a new record) with the average asking price reaching $609,771 in February, up 3.5 per cent from the previous month.

The Manawatu-Wanganui region was up 1.4 per cent to $387,122, while Central North Island was up 1.2 per cent to $498,380 compared to the prior month.

Smaller regions dominate new asking price highs

Average asking prices lift by $233

Three months after the Auckland region took the crown off Central Otago-Lakes as the most expensive in terms of average asking prices, the South Island region has bounced back again.

The two regions were remarkable in their own right, said Taylor.

“For the first time since April 2016, the Auckland region was so steady compared to the previous month, average asking prices lifted by a mere $233 in February.”

Auckland’s average asking price in February was $960,715 compared to $960,482 in January 2019. By contrast, CentralOtago Lakes leapt 7.5 per cent to an average asking price of $1,010,021.

“Back in November, we questioned whether the fall in average asking prices in this region could have been due to the impact of the Overseas Investment Act. Our thinking is that the drop is either directly or indirectly based on the significant number of highend Queenstown properties on the market in the month leading up to the passing of the Bill,” said Taylor.

The latest Consumer Institute cost of living survey shows that general costs in providing rental property have increased faster than rental prices.

In addition, wage increases were 66 per cent higher than rental price increases.

“Rental property providers have been keeping rental costs down when many of their costs and the price they have to pay for new rental properties is increasing at a faster rate” said NZ Property Investors’ Federation executive officer, Andrew King.

“It is also pleasing to see that wages are increasing at a faster rate than rental prices which will continue to help tenants with their living costs”.

A

n East Tamaki caravan and recreational vehicle (RV) business has been named New Zealand Dealer of the Year at the Jayco Australian-New Zealand dealer conference in Melbourne.

The South Auckland Caravan Centre picked up four awards in total. As well as the NZ Dealer of the Year – which the company has won 10 times – it won the 200 New Sales Club Award (more than 200 sales), Outstanding Achievement Award and Wells Fargo Award (based on turnover) out of Australia and New Zealand.

It’s an enormous step up from the company’s humble inception 14 years ago.

Owners Tania and Glen O’Donnell purchased South Auckland Caravans Ltd in 2005, with the Jayco Auckland agency. Jayco is the number one selling RV brand in Australia where they are manufactured.

“We had three staff and owned two caravans. Our original site was in Takanini which had been there for 50 years,” said Tania.

“In 2013 we moved to East Tamaki to a bigger site at 53 Springs Road and we have been progressively growing as a business.”

South Auckland Caravans now has 22 staff and three locations – also on Springs Road. The expansion over time was necessary as they outgrew

the current 5800sq m site which can hold 80-odd RVs/caravans.

The company easily qualified for the 200 New Sales Club Awards registering 262 units delivered although there were a total 302 actually sold.

On top of that, they also sold around 250 used units.

To qualify for The Outstanding Achievement Award, companies must have experienced sales increases of more than 20 per cent. South Auckland Caravans hit the 32 per cent sales growth mark.

And there doesn’t appear to be any sign of business slowing. Trends are showing retired and semi-retired people are selling their homes and choosing the freedom of a luxury RV. “We’re seeing couples who are committing

to touring the country now while they still can,” said Glen.

“They’re not just taking the money, we’ve had a professional couple opting for a complete life-change.”

Technology has also seen many changes to the RVs and caravans with modern units now fitted with ‘JHUB’ control panels which brings together next-gen recreational vehicle technology in one central, easy-to-use interface.

This week the company advances this tech interface further when it takes delivery of all new vehicles which will interact with mobile phones.

“These are exciting times and it’s wonderful to continue to see the business grow,” Tania said.

On behalf of Auckland Council.

I attended the Yvette Williams Track Pakuranga Athletics Club open day event that hundreds of young potential Olympians attended.

The meet had visitors from all over Auckland attending to participate in track and field open day. It was a fun day and the second event I attended that day. I am proudly wearing a tee-shirt from the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show marking Mini’s 60th year celebration.

Howick Local Board’s priorities While it has been difficult at times obtaining the Howick Local Board’s interest regarding environmental issues in our local Macleans Park, the Board has made quite a thing about wanting us to be fit and healthy.

The installation of fitness equipment in Macleans Park is one example.

This seemed to be an unnecessary expense when the park provides 36 hectares of prime coastal land for walking and jogging.

It is not just the people in our community that the Board now wants to be fit and healthy; the Board is also concerned about the fitness and health of dogs. The following is from the Board’s annual budget for 2019/2020: “We aim to have dedicated dog exercise areas to support our active and healthy local outcome.”

I suggest that the Board needs to rethink its priorities.

City Rail Link costs skyrocket Re the City Rail Link (CRL) cost blow out from $3.8 billion.

Estimates have increased by $500 million and may increase $1b and they have not even started tunnelling yet I believe they are in dreamland.

I understand the above-ground new rail system in Hawaii is only half completed and already has increased 100 per cent to $6.9b.

I suggested an alternative rail improvement scheme with a terminal at Newmarket for the south and west line with a continuous shuttle to and from Britomart, cost almost zero dollars.

All the tracks and platforms are in place. All it needed is some roofing extensions.

It would not be perfect but would save the city from bankruptcy We quite simply do not have the population or money for the CRL. Sydney alone has more people than NZ and a lot more money. I was told passengers would not like changing trains.

They obviously have not travelled overseas much.

Another urgently needed extension is widening the Britomart tunnel for the east line, something that should have been done when the tunnel was built.

This will need to be done for efficiency even if the City Rail Link is built.

Tomorrow’s Schools a Simeon SAYS concern With Simeon Brown

L

ate last year, one of the Governments hundreds of working groups reported back with its recommendations for the future of our education system.

The proposals it suggested are widereaching and recommend a radical centralisation of core education services away from school Boards of Trustees towards Education Hubs.

The proposal suggests creating 20 of these new Education Hubs, which would be run by Ministry appointees and have control over things like the hiring and firing of teachers, school property issues and school zoning.

Five-year contracts are also proposed for school principals with the Education Hub in control as the employer, and the Board of Trustees having veto power. It’s not clear though whether Boards would have the power to retain a principal they prefer beyond the fiveyear contract, meaning high-performing and long-tenured principals could be forced to leave their school.

These changes are designed to help make our school system more equitable, however they take a one-sizefits-all approach whether the school is performing well or not.

Local parents, teachers, school principals and trustees should be concerned with these proposals as they know best how to run their schools and we have

some fantastic examples in Pakuranga of this at work. National agrees that we need to improve school governance, but not by taking away all responsibility for it from the schools themselves.

As a whole, these proposals represent the largest potential reform of our education system in decades.

With something this significant, National believes our local school communities deserve a chance to have their say, and we have planned more than 40 public meetings around the country to provide this opportunity.

At these meetings our Education Spokesperson Nikki Kaye will be providing factual information about the proposals to ensure as many people affected understand them, and will ask for feedback she can deliver to the taskforce before it makes any final decisions.

I have planned one of these meetings in east Auckland on Thursday March 21, which will be kindly hosted by Macleans College in their auditorium at 2 Macleans Road, Bucklands Beach at 7pm.

Pakuranga is known for its excellent schools which perform well above their weight on a national scale and feedback from our community will be invaluable in ensuring the Government does what’s best for our schools. I look forward to seeing you there. ➤ Simeon Brown is MP for Pakuranga

MP’s complaint handed to SFO police said.

Ross made a media statement to reporters and fielded questions this afternoon: “I’m now pleased that the Serious Fraud Office is looking at the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile the SFO confirmed receipt of the political donations referral.

It said in a press statement on Tuesday that it had received a referral from the police about a complaint they received in October last year in relation to the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act. “The SFO does not disclose the detail of ongoing investigations to protect the integrity of the investigation and those involved. The SFO has no further comment to make.”

Many early settlers saw the Whitford hills as similar to Coromandel rocks after gold was discovered at Coromandel in 1852

by Charles Ring.

One “enterprising” Howick man filed a gold sovereign into the sand at Howick Beach but it was analysed as the same as a sovereign and it became a false claim.

Charles Ring received a £500 reward and promptly bought land near Kohukohunui, the top of the Hunua Ranges which can be seen from Stockade Hill. Gold was the magic ingredient to boost immigration, stimulate the economy and create richer lives for everyone.

Maori of Coromandel thought that gold found would belong to them under the Treaty of Waitangi. Instead the Government decided to give them a monetary grant which was accepted.

A few veins of quartz gave many men exciting dreams of rich pickings and wealth. In January 1852, 20 men on a schooner heading for Waiheke, stopped at Howick to buy spades, picks and shovels from a Howick storekeeper.

Gold nuggets had been found on Waiheke in 1842. Nga Puhi Hemi Pepene [James Fairburn], the ferry-man over the Tamaki River and a local farmer, boasted that from his 100 acres of wheat and oats on the Pakuranga flats “he was making money fast”, selling it to the Australian mills supplying the goldfields. But Vicesimus Lush in his journal complained that flour and pork had doubled in price due to gold-fever in Australia. He was forced to grow more of his own food.

Some lucky early settlers at Maraetai picked up nuggets of gold in local streams. There was only one local gold-rush when gold was found in the Waikopua Valley between Whitford and Maraetai. William Broomfield, who lived nearby, bought land for a school. This was later used as the cemetery. The Howick Arms publican Peter Brady bought a hotel site. In 1868, when the Thames goldfield opened, there

were soon 100 hotels in Thames.

Thames was the second largest city in New Zealand after Dunedin. But the gold-fever fizzled within a few weeks. Fencible soldier-settlers were not allowed to leave for the goldfields as they were still with their seven year contract. To leave had serious consequences.

Goldminers are extreme optimists. The author has researched more than 25 exploratory mines in the Whitford-Maraetai area.

William and Richard Trice, the first settlers of Whitford, bought 600 acres and found specks of gold in quartz veins. Soon they had two mines, one 150 feet long used from 1850 to 1870.

There was a lady in Howick who had a wedding ring made from their gold mine. They had an iron Berdan crusher and a horse-

drawn stamper battery.

William Brady and George & William Cooper had a 500 foot mine at Magazine Bay. William Shaw, Turner brothers, the Edwards brothers and others all worked hard without success.

But the piles of rock from Trice’s goldmining activities were used

by Manukau County Council for road metal. Their mine is now the Waste Management–Fulton Hogan quarry and landfill in Whitford.

Local farmers claimed that if the Trice brothers had spent more time farming they would have made a better income than fossicking for gold. A few hobbyists today still quietly fossick with dreams of striking it rich in the hills. ➤ Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

aving been promoted to captain, Sonny Bill Williams lifted his game to help inspire the Blues’ first Super Rugby victory of the season with a 28-20 triumph against the tenacious Sunwolves at Albany over the weekend.

It was a big improvement from the big second-five who craves game time after missing much of the last few seasons because of frustrating injuries.

It needed to be with fellow All Black contenders Ngani Laumape (Hurricanes), Anton Lienert-Brown (Chiefs) and Ryan Crotty (Crusaders) having shown consistent form to stake their test claims.

Howick win ARL Nines title T

he Howick Hornets have won their first ever Sportsafe ARL Nines title after overcoming the Hibiscus Coast Raiders 22-4 in the Grand Final at Stanmore Bay Reserve on Saturday.

It comes a year on from the Hornets winning the second-tier Pennant title at the tournament with coach Shaun Clark’s new-look side making the ideal start to their 2019 campaign.

Fourteen unanswered points in the first half laid the platform for the Hornets with tries to Jesse Albrett, Richard Piper and Trent Bishop, leaving the host team in a state of shock at the end of the opening nine minutes.

The Howick Hornets 2011 Fox Memorial Championship team are pulling the boots back on and have challenged the 2019 Premier squad in an exhibition match.

Ex stand-off Jason Tavita approached the club late last year with the idea but due to the Hornets going deep into the finals series, the game could not be arranged.

With the Pakuranga Jaguars pulling out of a pre-season trial match, an opportunity to stage the exhibition game was too good to miss.

With only a few exceptions, players Stephen Wakefield and Lee Wetherill, now living in Australia, and Anthony Gelling playing for Widnes in the UK Super League, the core group of players who played in the 2011 Grand Final winning team remain in Auckland and are up for the challenge.

Two current players Tony Tuia and Paulos Latu are expected to turn out for the 2011 team and will be joined by club legends such as halfbacks Troy Becroft and Leroy Faavessi, front rowers Aiden Howard and David Mu, centres Mark Lamalu and Andrew Kitchener, winger Warren (Wazza) Bray, loose forward Andrew (Doo-

Club co-chairman Bruce Campbell believes the game will generate huge interest across the league community and is picking the 2011 Champions to be a handful.

“Most of the 2011 squad have only recently retired in the last two or three seasons and while they may be a little rusty, they always have an amazing winning culture.”

Current premier coach Shaun Clark, who played for Manurewa against the 2011 Fox Champions

remembers them as a smart and very tough football team.

“I don’t really know what to expect from the match but it has been a real bonus having ex players involved and sharing their knowledge with the wider group”.

The 2019 season will be the Howick Hornets 10th consecutive season competing in Auckland Rugby League premier competition the Fox Memorial.

The 2011 Grand Final win over the powerhouse of rugby league, the Otahuhu Leopards, was the club’s first and only Fox Memorial Championship.

The current crop of players have gone close the last two seasons losing in the dying minutes of the semi-finals against the same team the Pt Chev Pirates. The 2011 team will be determined to demonstrate their Championship pedigree but expect the 2019 Premiers, who are fresh from being crowned champions in the annual ARL 9s tournament last weekend, to show they are one of the favourites this year to pick up the club’s second Fox Memorial.

The game is set to kick off at midday on Saturday, March 16 at Paparoa Park. The Fox Memorial trophy will be on display and all are welcome to come along to the club.
