Sporting great, the late Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to athletics.

The honour was approved by Her Majesty and took effect on April 12 this year. Dame Yvette had agreed to accept the honour before she died on April 13.

Dame Yvette’s brother Roy Williams told the Times from Te Aroha that the wonderful honour was tinged with sadness.

“It’s very, very sad that she didn’t get the honour bestowed upon her (at an investiture ceremony),” he said.

“It would have been lovely if she were still alive and able to see the public acknowledgement and receive the award from the Governor-General. “(However) we’re thrilled by it and very, very honoured on Yvette’s behalf.”

The family – including her children Neville, Peter, Karen and possibly Bruce (who is in Wales) – would attend the investiture ceremony in Auckland in August.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, “It is with sadness that we recognise Yvette Corlett as a Dame Companion for her pioneering contribution to athletics.

“As the first New Zealand women to win an Olympic gold medal she was a trailblazer. In addition to her ground-breaking athletics success she undertook lifelong service to sport as a volunteer and administrator.

“I think many Kiwis will agree that Yvette’s recognition at this level was long overdue – but I’m pleased that she knew she was to become a Dame before she passed away.

Dame Yvette was the first New Zealand female athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. It was in 1952 in the long jump event. She served as Patron of Counties Manukau Regional Sports Trust for 17 years until 2009. She was Patron of Athletics New Zealand from 2003 to 2006 and served on the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors from 1990 to 1995.

Meanwhile Anne Howell of Pakuranga has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community and education.

Mrs Howell has been involved in the education community in the Anchorage Park School area in Pakuranga, Auckland, since 1981.

Mrs Howell was a member of the Anchorage Park Kindergar-

ten Committee, and foundation member and Secretary of the Anchorage Park School Board of Trustees. She has served on the Board continuously since 1989, and has been the Board Chairperson since 2006.

Her support and advocacy was instrumental in the retention of the Anchorage Park Community Centre on the grounds of the School. This Community Centre continues to thrive today and offers a much needed facility and support for the local community.

Her key responsibilities on the board have included management of the school’s property projects and school security.

She is the first point of contact for the security monitoring service, for community users of the school pool in the weekends and over the summer holiday break and for users of the school hall after hours. She also served on the Pakuranga Intermediate School Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1998 and on the Edgewater College Board from 1998 to 2004. Mrs Howell has been the chairperson

Another Queen’s Service Medal recipient Lois Perry, of Mt Eden but formerly the Head of the Visual Arts Department at Pakuranga College, has actively promoted education and engagement of local communities with art in Pakuranga and the wider Auckland region for more than 40 years.

Ms Perry began her career as an art teacher at Pakuranga College where she was the Head of the Art Department for 11 years and her civic roles since have focused on art education. In 1975, she assisted the Pakuranga Arts Society with the establishment of the Pakuranga Arts Centre, New Zealand’s first purpose-built contemporary arts centre.

She volunteered as the Society’s Founding President from 1981 to 1985, as a committee member from 1985 to 2002, and then in leadership and governance roles until 2017.

Since its establishment in 2000, she has played a pivotal role in the development of Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, a contemporary arts space in Pakuranga with an education facility and dedicated exhibition space.

She was chair of the centre from 2002 to 2007, and remained as a Trustee of Te Tuhi’s governing Trusts, the Contemporary Art Foundation and the Te Tuhi Contemporary Art Trust. In 2004 Ms Perry established the Art Today programme at Te Tuhi, which continues to teach contemporary art to adult students to the present day.

100 ballerinas in an enchanting production ■■By Farida Master There is a buzz of excitement at the Howick Dance Studio, as a large group of ballerinas lace up their pointe shoes and change into costume.

Another group of little ones in their tutus makes a quick exit with their parents waiting to drive them home.

The rehearsals for The Nutcracker, a classical ballet production, have been timed with clockwork precision as the cast of 100 for the upcoming production has been broken up into smaller groups To be hosted on June 29 and 30 at the Hawkins Theatre at 13 Ray Small Drive Papakura, Sharon Barber, Howick Dance Studio principal says that it is a six-month start-to-finish production, choreographed at Christmas time.

The Nutcracker is a two-act classical ballet based on Hoffmann’s 1816 fairy tale that tells the story of a little girl who goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. “We have a very dedicated team of volunteers and have ex-students who

never leave me. They never go away, I tell them that you are here for at least 20 years,” says Sharon who was trained at the Auckland Ballet Academy and in London at the Royal Academy of Dance headquarters. She established the Howick Dance Studio in 1992.

“There is a lot of bonding and friendships by the time we finish with the production. Also, ours is the only studio that uses live music.”

However, she admits that all her productions in the past have had a cast of 200.

“Sadly, now-a-days education comes first, and then arts. And I am very particular about the fact that the children have to come for rehearsals every Saturday. We sign a contract with the parents.”

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says some aspects of Budget 2019 deserve praise while others could have been much better.

“The red team will say everything is great, while the blue team will say everything is bad,” he says.

“For Kiwis who just want to know if the Budget will improve their lives and make New Zealand a better place to live, the truth is somewhere in the middle.”

Ross says he’s pleased to see more investment being made in social services, mental health, building schools and classrooms, removing the cost of “voluntary” donations at low decile state and state-integrated schools, and addressing family and sexual violence.

But he says he’s disappointed there’s no money in the Budget to increase teachers’ salaries, address housing unaffordability, lower the cost of dental treatments and fully fund the emergency ambulance services.

“I also hoped to see more money going to Pharmac to fund lifesaving cancer drugs, and to Police to get more officers on the streets, including in our local east Auckland community.

“Overall the Budget does address some major challenges facing New Zealand, but other longstanding issues are yet to be resolved.”

hen Helen Manson started working as a humanitarian photographer, she found herself thinking the people she photographed were somehow fundamentally different from her.

The 33-year old has travelled to 35 countries to photograph postwar zones, refugee camps and areas stricken with famine and drought, capturing the faces of a world in crisis.

Painfully, she says, she has come to realise how wrong she was.

“I thought maybe they don’t feel things like I do... maybe they expect less, they care less, they

hope for less, they want less or they need less,” she says.

“I’ve seen that they are exactly like me and that what they endure living is no easier for them just because they are poor.”

Manson, a former Macleans College student, lives in Kampala, Uganda, with her husband, a trauma counsellor for refugees, and three young children helping create campaigns for 50 NGOs and charities.

Recently she was in Auckland as part of Tearfund’s Citizens of Humanity Tour to share her work with Kiwis.

Manson works on the front lines, witnessing the best and the worst parts of humanity.

In March she was tasked with photographing the work of Medical Teams International and Red Cross in hospitals in Tanzania.

She saw children fighting for their lives, shaking as they battled malaria and pneumonia while their mothers wept at their bedside.

As she was leaving the hospital one day she spotted an eightyear-old girl hooked up to an oxygen tank.

She went home and prayed that these children would make it through the night.

The next day, while several of the children had improved, the eight-year-old girl had not.

making a noise that I’ll never forget. The doctor put his hand on my back and said ‘it’s time to go’,” Manson says, holding back tears.

“I walked out into the sunlight and I completely lost it. Sobs came out from the deepest place they possibly could.

“You should never see an eightyear-old little girl take her dying breaths from simple stuff like pneumonia and malaria.”

Once she composed herself, she visited the mums in the maternity ward.

“Within minutes I watched newborn twins come into the world.”

Manson says wrestling with the tragedy of death and the celebration of new life within 10 minutes of each other was a significant moment for her.

“Just when this world seems ruined beyond repair, a baby is born.”

Manson says there is a rocket inside of her that burns fiercely for humanitarian work.

But it’s a job that takes its toll.

“When I interview people, more often than not I sit there with tears rolling down my cheeks and I feel sick. I start crying because it’s the only thing I know how to do,” she says.

“I encourage them for how brave they are to be sharing their story. Sometimes I say nothing because sometimes being there with them in silence is all I’ve got.”

She says she then goes home to edit and write the best campaign she can to connect with people in the west and “prays like mad that people give”.

Her most recent assignment saw her follow the story of three Ugandan mothers from pregnancy until their child’s first birthday.

‘The First Hello’, is part of Compassion International’s survival project and advocates for the importance of child sponsorship from pregnancy.

“Traditionally, child sponsorship would start at five, but children weren’t making it to five,” A baby born in Uganda is 10 times more likely to die than a New Zealand baby.

If they do survive, she says, too many end up in one of Uganda’s 800 orphanages.

“Mothers abandon their babies every day in pillar trains, hospitals, toilets and trash cans – it’s not their fault, they see no other option.”

She says the survival project offers mothers the chance to give their babies the best start to life

through antenatal visits, medical care and support through the first year of their baby’s life.

“There really is no difference in what we want for our children, only in what we can give them,” she says.

Manson hoped that by the end of the week-long tour she would have helped get all 100 children in the survival project sponsored.

And today only one child is left unsponsored. Manson says she wants people to feel encouraged that although there are many challenges facing our world; there has been tremendous progress made through projects like child sponsorship.

Elton John to the rescue T

he opening night of Elton John’s biopic ‘Rocketman’ was a sell out at Monterey cinema in Howick – and all for a very good cause.

Campaigners fighting to save Stockade Hill views held a fundraiser to help them pay their legal bills and continue their battle with Auckland Council.

“It was an amazing turn out – we sold out not one but two theatres!” said Brooke Williams of the action group, the Defencibles.

The enthusiastic crowd came dressed for the show with sequins, feathers and typically Elton John glasses.

“Such a fun night and great to have so many supporters. We are definitely growing in numbers – if the Council thinks this issue is just going to fizzle

A free workshop is being held to help Early Childhood Teachers from east Auckland understand the challenges faced by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Life goes full circle for Bruce and Annette

Bruce and Annette Mattison return to the land they once owned.

The move into Ryman Healthcare’s Bruce McLaren Retirement Village has been more tting for Bruce and Annette Mattison than most.

While both were prominent members of the Howick business community and so familiar to many in the village, the fact that the Chapel Road site had actually been their home once before conrmed it was the right move.

“We’ve come full circle!”

Annette says.

In the late 70s the couple opened a Pitch’n’Putt golf course on the site, a new concept in New Zealand at the time.

They built a home there, replanted and redeveloped the land into a ninehole golf course and maintained and managed the seven-day-a-week business with the help of their two sons Stephen and Andrew, who became junior greenkeepers.

One of the highlights was when record-breaking aviatrix Jean Batten came to visit in 1977.

Bruce found himself talking to her at a meeting at MOTAT where she was the guest speaker.

“I said if she wasn’t doing anything on Sunday to come for a run out in the

country and then I promptly forgot all about it.

“So you can imagine our delight when she turned up and she spent a good hour with us sitting on the deck overlooking the golf course enjoying a cup of tea.”

Adds Annette: “She was so easy to talk to and quite a character. We’ll always treasure that special memory.”

The golf course proved to be extremely hard work with no days off. Bruce was still running his company Tessco, a traffic signal company, while Annette juggled the day to day management of the course with the boys’ afterschool activities.

They eventually decided to sell it as a going concern and instead they opened a women’s clothing shop called Carnegie’s, rst in Moore Street and later relocating to Picton Street, Howick’s main thoroughfare.

“I did the buying and looking after the customers and making sure they looked good while Bruce ran the business side of it from upstairs,” says Annette.

She introduced the mother of the bride concept where ladies could come in and buy their hat, shoes and outt in a package deal and, being a believer in good promotion, she secured

a weekly slot on a national radio programme which gave them customers New Zealand-wide.

“I had a phone-in every Thursday morning on Alice Worsley’s radio show where I talked about fashion.

“One of my customers was the former mayor of Auckland, Cath Tizard. She bought a lot of clothes because I’d worked out all her colouring.

“She said ‘I have heard your voice so many times I feel like I know you!’”

Annette laughs.

Annette worked hard to source the best clothes and says some of her fellow residents at Bruce McLaren still own outts bought from her shop. Proof, she says, of their enduring style.

The couple say they have taken plenty of risks in life but have been fortunate enough that most of them have worked out well.

Their decision to move into the village happened quite quickly after a couple turned up one day and offered to buy their house on Sandspit Road, even including the furniture!

“We knew Ryman had started up on our old golf course so we thought we’d go and check it out,” says Bruce.

Eighteen months later they moved in

and it took another few months to adapt to the new lifestyle, says Annette.

Now they wouldn’t consider anything else.

What sealed the deal for Annette was the maintenance-free life she could now enjoy.

“We came back from our three months in Australia and they had cleaned all my windows – what more could I want?!

“Plus, the management are wonderful and there’s a bell to ring if I’m sick!”

Bruce agrees: “The staff are just amazing, every single one of them, and that’s unusual in any big organisation.”

They are both avid bowls players and have competed in Ryman tournaments and they love relaxing with friends, both new and old, over drinks at Happy Hour each week.

“It’s been good getting in touch with our old customers and associates again after being part of Howick for so long,” says Annette.

“We’re very lucky, we have got very good friends and have made new friends at the village as well.”

Bruce adds: “A lot of people ask us about the village and we tell them it’s great.

We couldn’t speak more highly of it!”

The biggest failure of the Budget has to be the lack of vision for solving the housing crisis. Kiwibuild is proving a failure yet remains on life support. There is little else on the horizon.

Considerably increasing land supply and genuine RMA reform are needed, but tends to be too hard for us politicians to deliver. First home buyers don’t see anyone offering the answers they deserve.

On education, it’s a positive move for the Government to put more than a billion dollars toward building new schools and classrooms. But the glaring omission was teachers’ salaries, something these hard working professionals are yet to see certainty on.

Budget 2019 was incremental in its change. Some things good, some less so. It gets the job done without excitement or offensiveness.

Next time you see a political party using a catch phrase to describe a policy or their opponents, don’t pay too much attention. It’s probably not good for your own wellbeing.

here’s a lot of partisan commentary on Budget 2019 out there already. The red team says everything is great. The blue team says everything is bad. It’s a “Wellbeing Budget” or “Botched Budget”, depending on who you cheerlead for.

I no longer sit in Parliament with the same permanently tinted glasses on. The reality is budgets in NZ have been fairly middle of the road for my whole adult life. Cullen, English, Joyce and Robertson all produced fairly similar outcomes.

We fight elections and policies at the margins these days, and there’s a general consensus on approaches to fiscal policy.

The Government did well to put $1.9 billion into mental health. Unemployment also remains low with economic growth moderate.

Labour is continuing the social investment work of the previous National Government and debt levels will land roughly where English/Joyce projected.

There wasn’t much that should get either side too excited or disappointed. That’s probably the biggest let down for the government’s supporters – there’s little to be inspired by.

Fuel tax increases and lack of sufficient funding for teachers, ambulance and dental services stand out as missed opportunities.

Guns in the wrong hands Four, or is it five, shootings in South Auckland in the last two weeks. I thought the Government had ordered for all the guns to be handed in to the police?

Obviously the bad guys don’t watch TV or read the newspapers or they would have been queuing up at the police stations to hand in their guns as requested.

Maybe the police should call around at all the homes of suspected bad guys and ask them if they have any guns to hand in.

Another slip-up by the Government. They did not tell the cops to lock up the guns when they were handed in, so a bad guy just walked into a police station, chose the guns he wanted and make a selection to add to his arsenal.

Maybe the Government were just joking about handing in the guns or did I just imagine the whole scenario?

Let’s hear it for our brave Howick firefighters!

On Saturday May 4, I celebrated International Firefighters Day at the Howick Fire Station.

It was an opportunity for me to catch up with our local firefighters, to thank them for all the work that they do in the community and also to learn about some of the challenges that they are facing.

Our firefighters do much more than just fighting fires, with greater responsibilities around supporting our other emergency services, particularly St John. This comes with additional pressures that our firefighters face on a day-today basis, both from additional demand and additional stress.

Over the past year, our local Howick Fire Station staff and

volunteers have had to attend numerous incidents across east Auckland as well as helping to raise fire safety awareness in our community.

Most recently they were first on the scene at Pakuranga Heights School where they were able to quickly extinguish a fire before it could spread to other classrooms and cause further damage.

I want to acknowledge and thank all the firefighters at Howick Fire Station, both professional and volunteers for all the great work they do for our community. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed!

Knives are for various uses around the house, chainsaws for cutting trees and firewood, vans for transportation of people and goods.

What makes them dangerous is when someone sees them as a useful weapon of choice for killing people.

It’s the evil thinking that makes these tools dangerous in the hands of evil people.

Shouldn’t we be challenging the mindset of evil in our midst?

An enlightened society would teach the sanctity of life at all levels of the education system. We are working in the wrong direction banning guns and who knows what will be banned next.

It’s a knee-jerk reaction.

A more concerted effort would be to thwart evil, reveal its dark secrets and confront its author. Now that would be a step in the right direction.

But who is equipped to do that? Probably not our present political leaders.

This is the purpose of the church. Is it up to the challenge?

Prems dominate in second half

Smith chalks up 100 first team games for BBAFC

Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers eventually stamped their authority on their match on Saturday beating Papatoetoe 34-6.

After a dicey opening, Pakuranga gradually put on the pressure, going into halftime 6-5 down.

“The last 10 minutes in that first half were strong,” said PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini.

“Then in the second half the boys stood up and played some really good rugby. “ It could have been a very different story though with Papatoetoe missing three opportunities in the opening 40.

“In the second half we just regrouped and started playing the game that we train for.”

n Saturday Bucklands Beach AFC celebrated with Josh Smith, his 100th first team game when they played Waitemata in NRFL Div 1 at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

Smith has been at the club since 2002 when, at the age of 6, he played for the Orcas and has continued on to play his whole football career at Bucklands Beach.

He has played in the top youth teams for the club and over the years won many ‘player of the year’ awards. Last season he was the club’s ‘Senior Men’s Player of the Year’.

A consistent goal scorer for the club, top goal scorer for the first team last season with 15 goals, he now finds himself tied for the top goal scorer in NRFL Div 1 with eight goals so far for the season.

Smith made his debut for the first team in 2014 when the team played AFF Div 1 and has been with the team since then.

They won the league that year and went on to win the Conference League in 2016.

They were runners-up in NRFL Div 2 2018 which gained them promotion to NRFL Div 1 for this
