uccess in anything you do, does not come without struggle.

Karen Corlett is quoting her mother, the first Kiwi female Olympic gold medallist Dame Yvette Corlett at the launch of David Riley’s biography titled Yvette Williams: Leaping into History.

While the trailblazer’s son Neville and daughter Karen (both locals) were present for the posthumous launch of the book written on the Athlete of the Century, the surprise package came in the form of little Kobi Corlett.

“We just discovered the day before that Kobi is Yvette’s greatgrandson and that he joined our school a couple of months ago,” says Bronwyn Bell, librarian at Star of the Sea School who arranged the special book launch at the school assembly hall on the last day of Book Week .

Along with the author, also known as the Reading Warrior, there was illustrator Chad Robertson.

Chad was David’s former student and said he felt honoured when 15 years later, his former English teacher approached him to illustrate the book.

David said the first impression he had of meeting New Zealand’s golden girl at a rest home in Howick was that she had an athletic frame even at the age of 90. He was thrilled when she took him into a special room with a special cupboard which had a special case that held the much-treasured gold medal she won at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 in the long jump.

“I asked her if I could hold it and she said I could, which is a moment I will always treasure,” he says.

“It was like holding a piece of history in my hands.

“It was so inspiring meeting her as she spoke about leaving at a very young age to train with her coach. She would run in boots

in her lunch break and would do weight lifting with concrete blocks or anything she could lay her hands on to build up strength and stamina.

“She showed me her scrapbook with inspirational writing and a poem on Reaching for the Stars, which she did.”

David who has authored 28 books to-date and is drawn to writing about inspirational figures “to keep our history alive,” says he had a sense of urgency of telling Yvette’s story as he grew up reading about her.

“It’s such a shame that the inspiring role model is not here to see the book,” he said about the Howick-Pakuranga resident, known for her will to win and make world history.

Over 4000 trees planted on the weekend The Mangemangeroa Reserve was alive with the sound of volunteers on Saturday morning.

The sun was shining as more than 130 volunteers from different Rotary Clubs (including Rotary Clubs of Somerville, Rotary Club of Papatoetoe Central and Howick Rotary, the host club) as well as members from the Pakuranga Chinese Association, a working bee from the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, a group of young Indian boys from Universal Brotherhood and Air Cadets got their hands dirty.

In all, around 4000 trees were planted and will go a long way towards avoiding land slips.

Allan Riley, chair of Friends of Mangemangeroa, was very pleased with the response and gave credit to all the volunteers and Somerville Intermediate School who also pitched in for the big tree planting drive over two weeks. “The first weekend we planted over 2000 trees,” he said.

Celebrating cultural diversity Baverstock Oaks School recently celebrated the cultural diversity within their school community that is made up of more than 32 nationalities and what better way to showcase the talent and cultures than through a cultural celebration.

As the students and teachers gathered in the hall, dressed in their bright and colourful cultural outfits, parents flocked in, excited to celebrate with the wider school community.

The celebration was kicked off with a kapa haka performance, welcoming students and parents. The Indian dance group, Korean drummers, junior kapa haka as well as the Pasifika group shared their passion for their culture through a variety of dances and songs.

The celebration ended with the whole school performing ‘sasa’, a traditional Samoan dance lead by the Pasifika group.

he unique bike that Daniel Strekier has built entirely from wood looks like a priceless piece of art.

While most people would think of it as an impossible task, the ingenious wood carver thrives on challenges. The skilled craftsman, who arrived from Argentina for three months and stayed for 12 years, says it is a dream come true.

“When I first landed in New Zealand with just enough life savings to last me for three months and very little English, the only word I knew in English was hammer,” he says.

“There is a German saying that with nothing you can be clever.”

While it took Daniel just a week to bag his first contract job as a shop-fitter at a fashion store on Queen Street, he says he was the crazy Argentinean who kept asking his boss for the toughest jobs to stimulate his creativity.

It was the same desire to push his creative limits that had him design a 60kg wooden bike with 22 gears and three hydraulic brakes.

It was a casual conversation about helping his neighbour Bruce McKay out with making a barrier out of old racing car tyres for a radio controlled car track that sparked his imagination.

The passionate craftsman behind Masterpiece Wood Works toyed with the idea of using midget racing tyres to build a bike.

Running his hand across the intricately curved wooden mudguard he says it has 32 pieces of wood, all seamlessly joined together.

Each side of the wheel started out as a 16 pieces of flat wood that were joined together with finger joints to form a circle with flat edges.

The oak, walnut and ash coloured smooth chain guard has 12 pieces of wood, while the handle bar has six pieces of wood lined with five layers of carbon fibre.

old son Theodore Lian Strekier would keenly watch him and was excited to help trial the bike.

Equally eye-catching are the laminated nuts and studs as is the wooden helmet he has created.

The wood carver takes special pride in showing off the wooden padlock which has just a tiny piece of pin for the key to fit in.

A wooden chain and the wood and leather saddle bag add to the finished look for this one-of-a-kind bike.

“Whilst building the bike I asked for inspiration to create a nice piece of art and that’s why I named the bicycle Grace,” he says.

Daniel first tried pedalling the bike from his home at Hutchinson Road to Eastern Beach.

Later he dared to bike across the Hauraki Gulf Trail which had its share of excitement—as he tried not to head straight into a

ditch.

He now plans to raise funds for a charity by biking from Cape Reinga to Auckland.

Currently training for it, his mind is already working on the next big piece of outstanding art.

Cockle Bay smoke testing begins in fight against sewage overflow ■■By Therese Henkin

S

moke testing has begun in Cockle Bay in a bid to reduce wastewater overflows.

This comes after local residents’ cries for help to stop sewage flooding into their backyards.

The sewage overflows are caused by stormwater illegally entering and overwhelming the wastewater network during periods of high rain.

Now Watercare are enlisting the help of the community to identify and fix illegally connected downpipes and non-complaint gulley traps to reduce the amount of stormwater entering the wastewater network.

The Nunn family are one of many families in the area whose backyards overflow with waste-water during bad weather.

“We have had sanitary items, toilet paper, faeces wash into our backyard before,” says Dalyn Nunn.

“Every time it rains we just watch the bottom of our backyard flood with dirty water.”

Craig and Dalyn’s property on Advene Road backs onto a stream that leads straight to the beach.

During extreme weather, they have had the manhole at the bottom of their property burst open and watched helplessly as sewage spills out onto the area where their children should be allowed to play.

The Nunn family are desperate to stop sewage overflow in their backyard. Watercare have launched smoke testing in Cockle Bay to help identify areas where stormwater is illegally entering the wastewater system and causing overflows.

“Ultimately this wastewater ends up in the stream, leading to our beaches,” Craig says.

Craig and Dalyn say they have battled for years with Auckland Council and Watercare to have something done about the wastewater overflows. Together with their neighbour Matthew Brajkovich and a few other residents, they have been working

with Watercare to implement a solution. “Watercare has acknowledged that no matter whose responsibility it is, this is a huge problem and they’ve put their hand up to help,” says Dalyn.

“It’s only one part of the solution, but it’s a start and it will make a difference for us,” says Craig.

While smoke testing has been

used extensively throughout Auckland for some time, this is the first time Watercare has ever contacted the community prior to testing and actively encouraged residents to take some responsibility and address any faults before we get there.

“We’re trying to encourage Aucklanders to take some ownership for

the problem. Watercare can do its part by building new infrastructure and maintain the network but individuals can also help by making sure their pipework is compliant,” a Watercare spokesperson says.

“Cockle Bay is an older area of Auckland. The area has undergone growth, with infilling. The wastewater network works well in normal conditions but during heavy rain, huge volumes of stormwater are illegally entering and overwhelming the system, creating overflows.”

The smoke testing involves Watercare using a smoke detection unit to blow non-toxic white smoke into the wastewater system to identify illegally connected downpipes and non-compliant gulley traps.

Those whose homes are found to have non compliant gully traps and illegally connected downpipes will be required to fix the problem.

“Details will be sent to the compliance team at Auckland Council, who will follow up with residents. Details may be recorded on LIM reports,” a Watercare spokesperson says.

Watercare programme improvement manager, operations says: “People don’t realise the impact something as simple as an incorrectly connected pipe can have but the reality is that just stormwater from just one roof can displace the equivalent wastewater from more than 40 households.

Celebrating volunteers at Howick Historical Village

here are some very exciting changes happening at one of the most iconic and historical tourist spots in Auckland – the Howick Historical Village.

Manager of the Village Kerry Powell previously worked with museums in the UK and has some brilliant ideas in place on how to run the Village in line with those museums held in world class standards.

The Historical Village interprets Fencible story using cottages and artefacts saved from the Auckland Region – was opened nearly 40 years ago by a number of community-minded people with foresight. It was developed out of pure passion for local history that connects our past to the present.

Recently, the Howick Historical Village celebrated the start of National Volunteer Week by having an afternoon tea to celebrate the tireless contribution of volunteers – with some of them having been around since the Village was first opened in 1980.

Giving due credit to the volunteers who make it a very unique hot- spot to visit for locals and tourists alike, Kerry says that volunteers contribute to everything including gardening, wagon restoration, cataloguing photographs, education, textiles and collections.

“We have around 100

volunteers and are so proud of their commitment to the Village and for bringing with them true dedication and passion that is unwavering,” she says.

Volunteers support others by embracing new recruits and sharing their own knowledge and expertise.

A new recognition programme has been introduced to acknowledge them.

All Volunteers of the Howick Historical Village will be given an identity card that will help them avail of a 25 per cent discount at the Homestead Cafe and 20 per cent discount at the shop. There will also be two annual social events arranged with staff.

Over 10,000 students from over 200 schools visit the Village each year and enjoy the throwback from the past as they compare how things used to be done during the Fencible period of time.

On `Meet the Villagers’ Days, every third Sunday of the month, visitors are fascinated as they watch Villagers make butter out of cream; or the Fencible soldiers march around doing their drills.

The Historical Village is a social hub and a great meeting place for like-minded people who share the same passion for heritage and local history.

“We have volunteers from Menzshed who repair items

around the Village and also from the Somerville School.

“They help us with gardening which is quite therapeutic and have made garden pots as well as decorated stones for our garden shop,” she says.

“The garden shop was developed with great support from Howick Rotary Club and Menzshed who did the repair of fences and painting of buildings. The shop also sells products made and grown by the volunteers.”

all the things he sees that he thinks other people ignore, such as invisible hail that “ripped all the leaves from the trees”, and the tropical fish that live in the canal near his home.

He also sees the unhappiness in his family, the violence in his father, played by Mark Madden-Snoad, and the pain that lingers in his community long after the end of World War II. All this – good and bad – and his determination to be happy, he carefully records in his magical and hopeful Book of Everything.

Director Alex Gleed has had the challenge of casting actors to play not only a nine-year-old boy, his parents and family, but also Jesus and a large dog.

hile the thought of major surgery would be daunting for many, the operating table was no big deal for 104-year-old Len Darr.

Just three week’s post surgery and the centenarian is back to his old tricks.

Walking up and down stairs without puffing, looking after himself, driving his car and chasing his cat off a pile of important documents are among the things the Howick local hasn’t let the surgery stop him from doing.

While Darr has become wellknown for his fitness and impeccable health, for more than 20 years he’s been living with what’s called a Zenker’s diverticulum.

It’s a pouch that forms at the junction of the lower part of the throat and the oesophagus, Darr says, which made it difficult for him to swallow and constantly regurgitate undigested food.

But until now, his doctors have deemed the surgery to repair it too dangerous.

“There is only one surgeon in the country that is qualified to do the surgery, and they hadn’t a lot of information about what the outcome would be. And given my age they said it was too risky.

“I’ve always told them to just go for it, I knew I’d be fine,” he says with a big ‘I told them so’ grin on his face.

When his doctors finally gave the go-ahead for the surgery, Darr jumped at the chance, despite his surgeon’s warning that there was no guarantee he would make it out alive.

“I wanted them to do the surgery not only for myself, but so

that the surgeon could learn more about the surgery and use that to help other people, so they don’t have to live with it like I did,” he says.

Darr, who is deeply spiritual, says he trusted the Holy Spirit to protect him and guide him through.

When he woke up from the anaesthetic; the doctors were shocked at how well he bounced back.

And even after taking a tumble at the hospital post-surgery and suffering severe bruising, he was home within a few days and looking after himself.

“Well first they sent me to an old age home to recover for three days. That definitely wasn’t where I wanted to be. I’m too young for that,” he says.

But you’d never guess Darr’s age, let alone that he’d undergone major surgery.

His mind is sharp and he moves

around with ease.

He says in the last year his body has slowed down, but he still feels “fit as a fiddle”.

“I think my purpose is to be of service to others, and keeping fit and healthy allows me to keep serving the community.”

And serve the community he has. Len has volunteered for St John’s Ambulance services since he was a teenager and served in the Royal Air Force medical corps in Egypt during World War II. He went on to run Darr’s Health Clinic in Takapuna until he retired at age 70.

Sports have always been a huge part of his life, and just two years ago he made headlines after signing up to a gym membership at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre.

“My mind is sharp and active and I’ve never let my physical age slow me down. I don’t plan on starting now.”

Offshore businesses that supply low-value goods to New Zealand have been granted a two-month extension to get systems in order for a new method to collect GST. Revenue Minister Stuart Nash confirmed Cabinet has agreed to the Finance and Expenditure Committee’s recommendation to extend the start date.

The Committee heard public submissions on the Taxation (Annual Rates for 2019-20, GST Offshore Supplier Registration, and Remedial Matters) Bill.

The new system to collect GST was due to take effect on October 1, 2019. It will now come into force on December 1, 2019.

agreed to the change in recognition that offshore businesses want to comply with the law but need time to adapt their IT and accounting systems,” Nash said.

Offshore businesses who supply more than $60,000 of low-value goods per year into New Zealand will pass on GST directly to Inland Revenue.

“The legislation ensures offshore suppliers are on a level playing field with domestic retailers. There are 26,000 small businesses in the retail sector employing more than 62,000 people.

The GST on goods valued above $1000 will continue to be collected by Customs at the border.

“The internet has opened up more markets for global companies but if they want to do business here they must follow the rules like everyone else. “We’re not the first country to introduce such a rule and eventually this will be the new reality of doing business,” said Nash.

It is estimated the tightening of the GST system will collect about $126 million in revenue per year by 2022/23.

Good news for birds, bad news for pests I

t’s now easier for the community to join the fight to protect native bird species.

Howick ward residents can now borrow pest traps from a newly established ‘Trap Library’ to help rid the ward of unwanted rodents.

The Trap Library is a culmination of 12 months work by Pakuranga Rotary and several other local organisations, to increase native bird numbers across the Howick Ward.

The warm autumn and abundance of feed has produced large numbers of rats in the area which, if left uncontrolled, will feed on birds’ eggs and chicks once spring arrives.

Rotarian Sylvie Wilkinson says it is encouraging to see community groups working towards a common goal to preserve precious wildlife for future generations.

Sylvie’s trap, set in her own Pakuranga garden, has caught 13 rats since September last year which she says is a clear indication that these predators are unseen but certainly active.

the World Hip Hop Championships happening in August.

The teams will be off to Phoenix, Arizona, to compete against teams from 50 countries.

To qualify, teams had to make it into the top 3 of their divisions. Neverland teams, Beast and Khaos, took 2nd and 3rd in the junior division.

The east studio team Beast will be fundraising this weekend for the hop across the Pacific with a movie fundraiser to see MIB International and next weekend with a showcase checking out the new troupes and crews of 2019.

Marking the millionth tree milestone Over fifty Mission Heights Junior College (MHJC) Year 7 students joined 250 other volunteers at Totara Park last week to support Auckland Mayor Phil Goff’s pledge to plant a Million Trees in the Auckland region.

The planting of a Puriri marked the millionth tree milestone.

Phil Goff, on behalf of the Auckland Council, thanked the volunteers and organisations across the city that worked to deliver the project. “Putting a million trees in the ground was always going to be an ambitious undertaking, but Aucklanders have come together to make our city a better, greener place to live. It’s exemplified people power, and the love Aucklanders have for their environment,” he said.

MHJC Teachers David Nutt, Sahara Singh and Dino Gardi believe this council programme links with their school learning context of ‘Think Globally Act locally’.

Acceleration needed on infrastructure

here was a lot of good cheer as the newest Leo Club in the world was inducted at Howick College in the presence of the members of the Lions Club of Howick, Dr. Paul Bennett associate principal Howick College and Neera Sundrum dean of Ingham House.

The formal presentation of the Certificate of organisation and Induction of the members and offic-

ers was conducted at Howick College on Friday June 7.

The presentation was made by Lions district governor Wendy Miller.

The program commenced with a karakia and a rousing kapa haka performance.

It is through Leos that young people are given the chance to enhance and make a difference in their com-

munities.

It is through the activities and projects they undertake that they get an opportunity to develop and practice their leadership, organization and social skills.

At a time when a disconnected world is driven by devices, the Leo Club instils in young people the ability to reach out and get involved in a lifetime of community service.

East Auckland’s population is growing rapidly.

So vision, long-term planning and a sense of urgency are vital to ensure our community’s current and future infrastructure will meet residents’ needs decades into the future.

Too many important local infrastructure projects have taken too long to get off the ground.

The Eastern Busway is a classic example. When it’s finished in 2026, it will take passengers by bus and train from Botany to Britomart in under 40 minutes.

It’s great that construction on this project is now under way, but it will have taken a staggering 20 years from first being announced to its estimated completion date.

That lack of pace is unacceptable and frustrated local commuters deserve better. We also need to make it easier for east Auckland residents to get into Auckland’s CBD and to Auckland Airport.

One way to do that is to connect the Eastern Busway with the planned Botany to Airport rapid transit project via Te Irirangi Drive.

That’s an initiative I’m leading the charge on and I’m pushing the Transport Minister on in the Parliament. I’m also pushing Mayor Phil Goff to have the Chapel Road bridge upgraded.

Funding was allocated several years ago to carry out initial work on the bridge and improve it so it would have pedestrian facilities,

be widened and the large curve in that part of the road would be reduced.

But Auckland Transport abandoned the project, leaving locals having to keep navigating their way along this crash hot-spot.

The planned upgrade was highly desirable given the fast housing and economic growth in nearby Ormiston and Flat Bush.

And obviously locals have the right to travel on roads that are safe and fit for purpose.

The new town centre being constructed in Ormiston is expected to eventually serve a population the size of Gisborne’s.

There was a lot to praise the Government for in Budget 2019, but one of its biggest failings is a lack of investment in roading infrastructure.

The $1 billion being put into KiwiRail won’t reduce the amount of time it takes someone who lives in Botany to get to Symonds Street or Auckland Airport. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

First home buyers divided on accepting home ownership help M

ore than half of Kiwi parents say they would loan their children money interest-free to help them buy a home, according to new research by Westpac NZ. However, only 38 per cent would expect the money to be fully repaid.

The online survey of more than 1000 people also asked first home buyers whether they would accept their parents’ charity and the results were split.

“With house prices very high now in many parts of New Zealand, we wanted to understand attitudes to parents supporting their children into a home,” says Westpac NZ acting general manager of Consumer Banking and Wealth Gina Dellabarca.

“The survey numbers show (not only) a strong degree of willingness to help but also a range of differing attitudes and levels of knowledge.”

The survey found 55 per cent of parents would be prepared to gift their children money, 21 per cent would offer them an interest payable loan and 18 per cent say they’d be likely to buy them a property outright.

And 53 per cent would likely act as a guarantor on their children’s first home, but 45 per cent of first home buyers say they would refuse that offer, compared to 35 per cent who would accept it. The remaining 20 per cent were uncertain.

“First home buyers are facing rising house prices but at the same

But as CoreLogic senior economist Kelvin Davidson explains, sometimes, a picture really can paint a thousand words.

“This updated visualisation tool uses GIS technology (and millions of data-points in the background) to deliver an easy to interpret explanation of the current property market.

Click on a particular suburb anywhere in NZ and instantly see its current median property value,” he says.

“It’s ideal for discovering other suburbs that may have previously been excluded from a homebuyer’s frame of reference.

“We used colour-blocking to show median values of one area relative to their surrounds…basically, anything dark purple means the suburb median is high for that particular market – in the case of Auckland, roughly $1.3m+.

“By contrast, the light orange sections show where you can still score property for much lower prices. It’s very easy to see which local suburbs sit within a particular budget.” The Mapping the Market tool also provides a five-year snapshot, comparing median values in June 2014 to June 2019.

stand and use some of the innovative products that can help them get there,” she says.

“One of these is our Westpac Family Springboard offering. Customers are able to ‘springboard’ off the equity that family members have in their own home and their savings.

They are set up with two separate loans – a standard home loan and a Springboard home loan that they share with their family members.”

Despite more than half of parents saying they’re either quite likely or very likely to provide an interest-free loan to their children, only 38 per cent think they would be repaid in full.

“Most parents seem resigned to the fact that supporting their chil-

dren in the current market will leave them out of pocket, but it’s a sacrifice they’re prepared to make”, Ms Dellabarca says.

Other practical means of assistance were also popular with parents with 63 per cent saying they’d likely help out with childcare to help their children save for a home. Some 43 per cent would let them temporarily move in with them rent free.

However, the survey found that most first home buyers don’t think their parents are duty-bound to help them onto the property ladder, despite their own relatively easier path to home ownership. Only 23 per cent say the older generation should help out if they’re in a position to, while 35 per cent disagree.

Plucky Chiefs scrape in H

aving scraped into the Super Rugby last eight playoffs in seventh spot, the Chiefs once again showed the courage that has characterised their game.

Written off before they shocked the defending champion Crusaders in Suva after conceding the first 20 points, the Chiefs completed their last qualifying game in a blaze of glory with their dazzling 59-8 away win against the Rebels.

With halfback Brad Weber and midfield star Anton Lienert-Brown leading the way for most of the season, flanker Sam Cane’s late comeback from a broken neck provided the inspiration needed to clinch qualification, as did Brodie Retallick’s recent return from injury. Cane didn’t flinch in putting his neck and the rest of his body in places angels fear to tread. He’s a tough, brave bloke who doesn’t intend to gift dynamic Ardie Savea his No 7 All Black jersey without a fight.

The speedy Weber deserves to go to the World Cup as the third halfback behind Aaron Smith and PJ Perenara and it continues to surprise me that the choir who continue to sing Sonny Bill Williams’ praises rarely mention Lienert-Brown.
