“When I started racing karts at six, I never thought it made a difference that I was a girl, I was just doing the same as the others on the track,” says Amy who has competed in more than 1000 races before she turned 13 and moved to circuit racing.

“I’ve always wanted to be the principal of this school and I’m a little jealous of Mrs Dickinson who got this role. But I will wait my turn. Maybe I will get to be the 12th principal of the school,” he said on Tuesday morning.

Introducing himself as “the younger and the better looking version of the Dickinsons,” he said it was such a proud moment for his wife who is often described as Florence Nightingale/Superwoman for going out of her way to help anyone and everyone with a problem.

“She well imbibes the school values of courage, courtesy and kindness,” he said.

“This week is a very important one for us but I’m sure my wife has forgotten all about the other important event in our lives.

“It’s our wedding anniversary

on Thursday...but I do know how much the school and the students mean to her and well understand that with so many things on her mind, she has forgotten about it,” he said.

Getting very emotional as her husband introduced her on her special day, Mrs Dickinson, said it was always her dream to be a teacher.

She started her career as a teacher in a rough area in London. She later went to teach at Pigeon Mountain School followed by a six year stint at Riverina School.

“I have fulfilled my dreams and I encourage you to follow your dreams and aspire to achieve them,” she told students.

“It reminds me of a quote from a very important man from the 60s - Martin Luther King. He said he had a dream.

It was a very simple dream for everyone to be treated as equal and work and play together.”

Thanking the former principals of the School Doreen Martin and Caroline Chawke for giving her mana and confidence to help drive the school

forward, she finished with a whakatauki (Maori proverb) on the school playground dedicated to the memory of Koro Percy which reads: “Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.”

Teenagers killed in Pakuranga crash named

Local jeweller robbed at knife-point

Police are investigating an aggravated robbery of a local jewellery store.

The jewellery store on Whitford Road in Sommerville was robbed at knife-point Tuesday, July 17 at approximately 2.45pm.

“Three males have entered the store armed with knives. They have threatened a store worker, smashed glass counters and taken off with items,” says Detective Inspector Fa’amanuia Va’aelua.

The suspects left the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Nobody was injured and police are following positive lines of enquiry.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Counties Manukau Crime Squad on 09 261 1321.

he teenagers who died in a devastating car crash on Friday morning have since been named as 17-yearold Nathaniel (Nathan) Quist and 13-year-old Ella Berrington.

The crash that claimed their lives took place at around 4.30am on Friday when the car they were driving crashed into a commercial building in Udys Road/Johns Lane.

One media report says the car apparently came off the road, snapping off a lamp post, before going down a bank and crashing into the car park of the building.

The vehicle was discovered hours later and police were called to the incident at around 7.20am.

Following the crash, the dark coloured Honda Accord they were driving was reported stolen, police have confirmed.

Police believe speed was a factor, with the car breaking into four parts upon impact with the building.

Over the weekend, heartfelt messages to the two teens have flooded social media.

Ella Berrington was a Year 9 student at Pakuranga College.

A family member told the NZ Herald that the Berrington family was “hurting so deeply right now”.

space to grieve and pull everything together to have the best send off for Ella,” they said.

“It’s going to be tough and there are no words that could help make this situation any easier.”

Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams has reportedly been in contact with the family over the weekend and says he is focussed on giving them the support they need. In an email to parents he said her death would “create a void” in the school.

The email also granted students permission to attend Ella’s funeral as an excused absence and parents were encouraged to seek out guidance councillors for their children if needed.

Bucklands Beach Intermediate, which Ella also attended, posted a tribute to the youngster, expressing their condolences to

her loved ones.

“A life lost too young. With love from us all,” the post read.

A friend of Ella’s took to Instagram to say that she “can’t believe” her best friend is gone.

“We done so much together and I thought we could do so much more, I thought there would have been many more years to come,” she wrote.

Nathan, 17, was a Tamaki College student who expressed on Facebook his desire to one day join the navy.

His uncle Lyndell Juggernau told Stuff that Nathan was the oldest of four siblings and was “courageous” and “full of heart”.

This week a large group of around 20 friends gathered in the car park where the teenagers died to remember and say goodbye to Nathan and Ella. The walls of the car park are covered in heartfelt messages for the pair.

The crash is still under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit.

Police seeking witnesses after teen dies ■■By Therese Henkin The 19-year-old who was hit by a car near a house party in Half Moon Bay earlier this month has died, and police are seeking witnesses.

Xavier Browne was struck by a car a short distance away from a party at an address on Casuarina Rd at around 10.30pm on Saturday July 7.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after and Browne was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

It was confirmed by police last Wednesday that Browne died five days later from his injuries.

Tributes to Browne have flooded in on social media calling him a promising sportsman, a valued friend and loving son.

“I will c u again my son Xavier.

I love u and I never 4get u,” his father Kutz Browne wrote.

Acting Inspector Chris Barry, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau East, says the accident is under investigation.

A neighbour told Stuff that his wife had contacted noise control at around 9.30pm. He also estimated there were around 500 people attending the party.

However when police attended the property, they estimated there were fewer than 100

“We are not aware of receiving any complaints in relation to a party on that street at any stage of the night and the first time we were called to the street was as a result of this serious crash,” says Barry.

“The priority for police at the scene was to deal with the crash scene, which was under scene guard due to the fact that the Serious Crash Unit was conducting a scene examination due to the seriousness of the crash.”

Police also spoke with the organiser of the party.

“We were satisfied that there was no breach of the peace or disorderly behaviour at the address and police had no concerns in relation to the party.

“The only occasions where police are able to close down a party is if there is disorderly

behaviour, unlawful activity taking place or fears for the safety of those inside an address.”

Police remained at the crash scene for several hours as a scene examination took place.

At around 11pm, Police arrested a male for disorderly behaviour relating to an incident near the crash scene.

A 20-year-old male was charged with disorderly behaviour and cannabis possession and will be appearing in the Manukau District Court in September.

Auckland Council have since confirmed they received three noise complaints that night for a Casuarina Rd property.

An Excessive Noise Direction was served and a call for seizure of equiptment was ordered but Steve Pearce, manager regulatory complaince says Council officers were unable to access the property, which was already blocked off by police.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the crash occur and have not yet spoken to police. Police also want to hear from anyone who has any photos or videos of the incident or the aftermath.

Fox makes best finish in a major

ro golfer Ryan Fox claimed his highest placing in a major with his 39th equal finish in the British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland at the weekend.

It caps a very good few weeks for the Beachlands player who took home US$41,375 ($60,959) for his 2 over effort for the championship.

Winner Francesco Molinari finished on 8 under and won $1.89m ($2.78m).

Fox had already earned Euro179,365 ($NZ310,000) to take his total season earnings to $2.26 million up until last weekend’s Scottish Open.

He sits ninth on the European money list.

Fox finished sixth equal at

the Scottish Open and narrowly missed claiming his first European Tour title in the Irish Open the weekend before. He finished second there.

Regarding his British Open finish on Sunday, Fox told the Times: “Yes it’s my highest placing.”

“It was a frustrating week. I played better than I scored but overall I’m pretty happy.”

Carnoustie brought a lot of misery too for many in the field.

“It was just a tough golf course.

Conditions were fair but tricky on Friday in the rain and Sunday in the wind.”

Fox will have two weeks off before the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri in the US.

New approach to NCEA O

rmiston Senior College will be doing things differently with Year 11 students and NCEA next

year.

With schools becoming more aware of the adverse effect of continual assessment on adolescent mental health, come 2019, a new approach to NCEA in the first year of senior college has been planned.

Students will begin working towards NCEA Level 2 over two years instead of focusing on NCEA Level 1 for a year and then Level 2 the second year.

The school is committed to taking learning more slowly and allowing time for exploration and discovery.

Diana Patience, principal of Ormiston Senior College, says the current NCEA practice of a constant focus on assessment all year takes away from the process of learning.

“Real learning takes time. Employers are telling schools they are looking for students who not only have a good subject knowledge but also display the skills listed above,” she says.

“By making NCEA Level 2 a two-year journey, the school will focus on both in-depth content knowledge and the above dispositions.”

At present, the stress and pressure do not abate for the final three years of schooling. By taking two years to gain NCEA Level 2, assessments will not be so frequent nor the time frames so pressured.

“The only important qualification is the one the student leaves with. Once a student has achieved NCEA Level 2, they automatically achieve Level 1,” she says.

“The government is currently reviewing NCEA Level 1 and the changes we

are proposing are in line with those up for discussion by the Ministry of Education.”

Assessments will not disappear. Students in Year 11 next year will have the opportunity to achieve some credits towards Level 1 or 2. Assessment will be linked specifically to attaining numeracy and literacy standards and working towards some Level 2 standards. This will have a knock-on effect of also making Year 12 less pressured.

Past and present students have been surveyed and a good number of the nearly 200 responses indicate that there should be more focus on learning and less on getting credits.

“The drivers for change are many,” says Ms Patience.

“The World Economic Forum has published the skills required to thrive in the 21st century. As well as the foundational literacies (numeracy, scientific, ICT, financial, civic and written literacy) they have listed creativity, critical problem solving, communication and collaboration as key competencies every person needs as they enter adulthood.

“They also add the character qualities of curiosity, initiative, persistence and adaptability. A school needs time to allow students to focus on developing such skills.”

She says that these changes will deepen students’ content knowledge, remove the high level of constant stress and provide time to embed the competencies outlined by the World Economic Forum.

“The response to this proposal from the community in the contributing schools has been overwhelmingly positive and innovative course design for 2019 is well underway,” she says.

Ken was associated with the industry through his ownership of McIntosh Timber Laminates. By working with the BCITO and MIT, Ken established the awards as a regular annual event with sought after prizes for the winning apprentices in association with Placemakers Pakuranga.

Howick Rotary named the awards after Ken when he passed away and maintain an ongoing link with the family through Ken’s son Grant and honorary member, Ken’s wife Maureen.

John also mentioned that “the industry was in a much better position today than when the awards started with in excess of 11,000 apprentices in training nationally”.

The awards recognise outstanding building and construction industry apprentices and is organised by Howick Rotary in conjunction with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and Manukau Institute of Technology.

In introducing the awards, Rotarian John Osborne gave a history of the awards and the reasons behind their inception.

Mental health is a significant issue facing New Zealand, with Labour coming to Government promising to make radical reforms to the sector.

We were repeatedly told that New Zealand wasn’t doing enough, even after National allocated $100 million in last year’s Budget for a mental health package which would deliver 17 new initiatives designed to improve our ability to support and treat those with mental health issues.

This package has now largely been scrapped with the new Government instead putting its effort into a mental health review and preferring a wide-ranging conversation rather than action.

But action is what’s needed, and the initiatives delivered as part of National’s package would have made a real difference now and taken an evidence-based approach to adapt and trial overseas ideas to ensure we were providing the best care.

One of these scrapped initiatives was an $8 million pilot programme that would have seen mental health experts join police and paramedics responding to mental health incidents.

Police spend approximately 280 hours a day dealing with mental health cases, and while they do an incredible job, they are not mental health professionals and would have benefitted immensely from

The pilot had universal backing from those on the frontline of mental health, including mental health expert Nigel Fairley who said earlier this year the pilot was his number one priority from our overall package.

And this was just one initiative. Others that were scrapped included $5m towards ongoing support for those who attempted suicide, $25m to expand primary and community mental health and addiction services like Youth One Stop Shops, and $10m towards distance and e-therapy trials, as technology plays an important role in tailored convenient care.

Six stand for council seat In May the community suffered a tragic loss with the death of beloved Howick Ward Councillor and Olympian Dick Quax. His passing left a vacancy on the Auckland Council, prompting a by-election. Nominations closed last Wednesday and six declared they were standing. Last week we featured three candidates – Phil Taylor, Damian Light and Jim Donald. Today we bring you profiles of the other three. Voting documents will be posted to eligible voters from Wednesday, August 22, with voting closing at 12 noon on Thursday, September 13.

“I’m back! I am Olivia Montgomery and I have stepped up again for the opportunity to be a Howick Councillor. Since the previous local election nothing has stopped the passion and commitment I have for our community.

“I have been busy working with, and advocating for people with disabilities and accessibility issues. I run a harm reduction organisation focusing on delivering progressive education on drugs, sexual consent and mental health for young people.

“I continue to encourage the arts and perform with a number of local groups and have been working with residents on cleaning up beaches and holding residential developers accountable for waste.

Jessica Collings, 21, the daughter of Howick Local Board chairman David Collings, wants to stand on her own merits and would never take anything for granted.

She hopes she will be able to convey her policies throughout the campaign and just asks that people consider them when voting.

“I also hate waste, I think everyone does. I think the council needs to be more efficient - we shouldn’t have become a super city otherwise. I feel council needs to take heed of what the community want, listen to those who pay their wages and get back to core business.”

Again, Jessica is very aware of things, such as the fact that Howick, Pakuranga, Botany ratepayers pay almost $100 million annually.

Jessica wants to see that more of this money is spent within our area instead of going to pet projects within Auckland. Important projects such as AMETI and sorting out traffic congestion has taken far too long and she will see the issues get action.

“Library, arts and aquatic facilities need to be developed within our growing community now, not later,” she said.

She also feels that councillors have let down the area through the introduction of things such as the Unitary Plan. Changes around Stockade Hill should never have been allowed to happen. “What were our councillors thinking? If we lose the view shaft, it will be a travesty for Howick and for visitors coming into the area,” she says.

Paul Young came to New Zealand some 30 years ago and settled in Howick where he and his wife Rosana raised two children while he established a marketing, concert promotion and photographic business in Somerville.

At the last election when two councillors were elected for Howick, he came third behind the late Dick Quax and is now making a determined effort to fulfil a long-held ambition to represent the area and take the simple message to “City Hall” that the people of east Auckland should be able to travel easily between where they live, work, shop and play.

By sensible he means shuttle buses to take people from their own streets to bus or railway station transport hubs, so encouraging people to use public transport and, as for cost, the shuttles should be free which Mr. Young argues would be cheaper than building more roads and car parks.

On his other priority of law and order, he believes in a strong police presence in the community.

“We need to know that when we need them, the police will be there.”

He also wants great transparency of council business.

Year 12 and 13 students from Pakuranga College recently presented the latest version of their Virtual Reality sledding game at the New Zealand game developers’ meet-up at the Auckland University of Technology campus.

They shared some of the insights they have gained along the way, at the game developers’ meet-up which was an opportunity for professional game developers, students studying game design and other professionals with an interest in the virtual gaming world to exchange notes.

Many attendees were keen to try out the students’ game. The latest iteration of the game is more polished with an updated release due to hit Steam very soon. Steam is a digital distribution platform, which offers digital rights management, multiplayer gaming, video streaming and

he Ministry for Culture and Heritage has recently told Erebus families that the Erebus National Memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary of the accident on November 28, 2019.

The scale and complexity of the Erebus National Memorial means it will be delayed until at least mid2020, according to chief executive Paul James.

The accident of Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZK-NZP, Flight TE901, on the slopes of Antarctica’s Mt. Erebus on 28th November 1979 with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is New Zealand’s worst civil disaster,

and still the Southern Hemisphere’s worst aviation accident.

The Erebus National Memorial group has been advocating since early 2016 for the long overdue national memorial.

Spokesperson Rev Dr Richard Waugh from Howick says, “While we commend the Government’s work for the Erebus National Memorial, it was very disappointing to recently learn that the Ministry for Culture and Heritage have indicated to Erebus families that the memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary in November 2019, but now into 2020, and maybe later.”

group, which includes Erebus families and many prominent citizens (such as Lady June Hillary), first proposed the national memorial in early 2016, which would have given ample time for the national memorial project to be completed in time for the 40th anniversary.

The delay follows a longstanding reluctance to appropriately remember and honour the victims of the Erebus accident.

Ongoing controversy surrounding the cause(s) of the accident should not inhibit in any way the priority of creating an elegant and accessible national memorial for those who died.

Rev Waugh adds: “It is vital that a truly bipartisan approach be taken by all politicians and political parties for the Erebus National Memorial.

Such full and positive support will demonstrate genuine care for the Erebus families. This accident is an important part of our national identity and memory and the building of a national memorial must be a continuing priority. While it seems that the Erebus National Memorial will not be ready for the 40th anniversary, we are proposing that something meaningful and special is still planned for November 28, 2019.” ➤ Ways to assist: Two specific ways people can sup-

The exhibition consists of painting relating to the natural and “simplest of all archetypal symbols the rhythm”.

Morant says that he is proud to have this work exhibited in the temple gallery as for him the fine Buddhist setting is like coming home to the heart of all that has inspired him and allowed him to endure as an artist.

“Our only loss was to a New South Wales representative team, who I truly believe would compete and beat most 1A schools (top Auckland school sides).

Young Aussie visitors take Trans-Tasman Shield

Wheeler takes Auckland title Peter Wheeler followed up his North Island victory in Taupo two weeks ago with another convincing win taking out his first Auckland senior cross country title in 34:18 for the 10km in the Athletics Auckland Cross Country Championships at Barry Curtis Park on Saturday.

The defending champion Jono Jackson was second in 35:22 with last year’s under 20 champion Andrew Catley third in 36:05.

Wheeler was pleased with the win.

“That’s my first senior cross country title. I just went out and tried to keep a solid pace the whole way, and managed to pull off the win, so pretty happy with that. It’s a good sign going into the nationals in two weeks,” he said.

Lisa Cross (nee Robertson) won the senior women’s 10km in emphatic fashion covering the five laps in 38:42, over three minutes ahead of Olivia Burne.

Fiona Love was third in 43:37. Cross, the national 10km road champion in 2011 and the national half marathon champion in 2012, said with the nationals coming up she would try herself over the country.

n Friday July 13 the Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) hosted a battle from across the ditch with the Pakuranga Under 10s playing a team from the Cherrybrook Club in Sydney, Australia, now renamed the Northern Barbarians.

Pakuranga’s Under 11 team played against East Coast Bays as the Northern Barbarians only had one side this year. The relationship between the Pakuranga and Cherrybrook club has continued successfully for more than 30 years and sees boys and girls of these age groups travel bi-annually to Sydney for a series of matches.

The Pakuranga Under 10 team coached by Shaiden Lambert plus assistant coaches Nick Williams and Stephen Weston and managed by Ana Kireka - played for the Trans-Tasman Shield.

It was a hard-fought game with plenty of courage and determination shown by both teams with the Australians emerging victors with a final score of 24-5. The PURC

As well as broadening their rugby playing skills, this Cherrybrook Tour provides players the opportunity to develop new life skills and experiences which forge life-long bonds. These players will help provide the future for Pakuranga United as this tour is the entry level to representative rugby for the players. Training for the 2019 Under 10 team for players born in 2009 will start on July 22 with the trial to be held on August 19. Everyone eligible is welcome to come along and join in.
