A Half Moon Bay foreign exchange broker who defrauded his clients of more than $7 million has been sentenced to six years and three months’ imprisonment.

He is to serve a minimum period of imprisonment of two years and 11 months.

Kelvin Clive Wood (70) was sentenced yesterday (Wednesday, July 24) at the Auckland District Court on representative charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Wood created a Ponzi scheme after his foreign exchange brokerage began to suffer net trading losses, the SFO said in a media statement.

He used new investors’ funds to pay other investors their reported gains or to refund investment principal.

None of Wood’s clients were

aware that their funds were being used to repay other investors.

More than $7m of investment principal belonging to 18 investors was lost by the defendant over an eight-year period. The defendant knowingly reported fictitious profits and false or inaccurate foreign currency trades to investors.

The acting director of the SFO, Rajesh Chhana, said, “Mr Wood earned the trust of a group of investors through his personal and professional association with them. His breach of that trust is reflected in the sentence imposed today. The prosecution of such matters holds to account those who fail to conduct business in accordance with the expectations of a reputable market.”

The Financial Markets Authority referred the case to the SFO to investigate in May 2017.

28 schools to put on their dancing shoes The Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival is being held once again this year at Somerville Intermediate from August 5-8 at 6.30pm. The first two days of the festival is organised by Cockle Bay School where 14 schools will participate; and the logistics of the next two days will be run by Our Lady Star of the Sea— where other 14 schools will participate.

Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival is inclusive of all dance abilities and is a chance to showcase the love of dance.

Cockle Bay School will be dancing to the tune of Pink Panther.

Interestingly, all dances are a throwback from past TV shows, which should be an enjoyable experience for the audience.

After 22 years of organising the Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival, Kirsten Bell,

dance and drama specialist at Cockle Bay School says that this year she will be passing on the baton to someone else.

“It is a huge event, and now it’s time for a fresh face and new ideas.”

The fresh faces come in the form of five teachers teaming up from Cockle Bay School who have been shadowing Kirsten this year.

The highpoint she says is seeing the show come together each year.

“Best memory is a hip hop dance we did in my second year of organising it.

“I will never forget carting back to New Zealand 20 LA Lakers caps and t-shirts I got from a side stall in Washington.

“I have loved pulling together this community show. It has been exciting seeing the technology change.”

Fight over park safety heating up A

group of determined east Auckland residents battling to improve safety at their neighbourhood park aren’t ready to give up the fight.

Locals who live near Tarnica Park in Northpark say they’re fed up with young people engaging in anti-social and dangerous behaviour at the public greenspace.

They say teenagers gather there as early as 5pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and get into fights, vandalise the park’s playground equipment, and leave broken glass on the ground.

An incident earlier this year allegedly resulted in a young male being injured with a weapon.

One of the frustrated residents, Gordon Luke, was supported by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross when he took his concerns to the Howick Local Board’s business meeting on July 15.

Mr Luke and several other locals previously presented a petition to the board in March that calls for lights and a security camera to be installed at the park.

He told the board he met an Auckland Council officer on May 6 and was told he would hear back from the officer within three weeks, but has heard nothing since.

“Not a single piece of information has come back from the board about what’s going on,” Mr Luke said. “Nobody has been and knocked on the residents’ doors except for me and Jami-Lee Ross.

He’s been around and talked to residents … we are not happy because nothing has happened.”

ings said he understood a council officer was working with Mr Luke and would get back to him with a report. He asked Mr Luke what happened when he contacted the council officer to ask what was happening.

Mr Luke said he had not done that.

“You didn’t think of chasing her up?” Mr Collings asked. “Did you communicate with anyone on the board that that was the case?

Mr Luke said it isn’t his job to do that.

“It is your responsibility to come back to us and tell us,” he said.

Mr Ross then joined the verbal exchange. He said there’s about 1000 people living in the streets off Tarnica Road and he’s knocked on the doors of about 80 per cent of them.

“There’s a lot of frustration there around the park,” he said. “Mr Luke is coming here because he feels there hasn’t been enough communication from the council and … this is an avenue to speak directly to the people who represent him with regard to local governance.”

Collings later told the Times Mr Luke had been encouraged to come to a “Talk To The Board”

meeting instead which is more informal and board members could have engaged in a conversation about the matter.

“I’m sure I speak on behalf of all board members when I say we are also disappointed at the timeframe some of these things take to get addressed. However in fairness to council officers, it is important that before we make any decision to spend ratepayer funds or where decisions may have consequential outcomes that we have all the information. The officer working on this is our Strategic Broker and I understand she has been working with Police, Parks, Community Safety and Auckland Transport to try and find a solution,” Collings said.

“The reason for my questions below was due to my surprise that Mr Luke had chosen to come to the public meeting, where we have limited speaking ability, rather than just contacting myself or a board member directly.”

The council officer and Mr Luke have organised a meeting next month for the residents with Mr Ross, local board members, and local police to discuss the problems at the park.

Teacher censured after being caught drinking at school A teacher quit her job a day after being caught drinking alcohol on school grounds.

Toni Osborne has been censured by the NZ Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal and the register annotated with conditions imposed to provide the Teaching Council with updates on her rehabilitation and to disclose the decision to employers for two years.

The recently-released tribunal decision states that on December 6, 2017, the assistant principal of Howick Intermediate School, where Ms Osborne was working, detected a strong smell of alcohol on Ms Osborne’s breath.

Ms Osborne initially denied that she had been drinking and said the smell was mouthwash. While looking to locate the mouthwash, the principal saw a water bottle in Ms Osborne’s laptop bag which was about one third full, the decision reads.

Ms Osborne agreed the principal could smell the contents but then walked past the principal and poured the contents down the drain, turned the tap on and tried to fill the bottle. The principal smelt the remaining contents of the bottle and detected a distinct smell of alcohol.

consumed alcohol. The following day - December 7, 2017 - Ms Osborne sent an email to the principal acknowledging that she had brought alcohol to the school and apologised for having it in her bag.

She acknowledged she should never have put the principal or the school in that position and that it was very thoughtless of her. Later in the day, Ms Osborne confirmed to the principal that she had consumed alcohol at the school and knew she had made a mistake.

Ms Osborne resigned from the school that day. The case was referred to the Complaints Assessment Committee of the Teaching Council, who proceeded with a charge of serious misconduct in the Disciplinary Tribunal.

Ms Osborne did not dispute that her conduct amounted to serious misconduct. The Tribunal found that her conduct amounted to serious misconduct on the grounds that it reflected adversely on her fitness to practise as a teacher, brought the profession into disrepute and was of a severity to warrant referral to the council.

In considering penalty, the tribunal saw the aggravating features (Ms Osborne’s premeditation and dishonesty) as symp-

tomatic behaviour of an addict but agreed that Ms Osborne deserved some recognition for contacting the school the next day to acknowledge her behaviour.

The tribunal was, however, skeptical of Ms Osborne’s explanation that the water bottle had been at school since the weekend and that she had taken a sip but not any more after realising what it was.

The tribunal considered that Ms Osborne has taken steps towards her rehabilitation and thought transparency was an important factor in deterrence for her.

Ms Osborne was censured and had conditions imposed on her practising certificate to provide the Teaching Council with updates on rehabilitative steps every three months for one year, and to disclose the decision to employers for two years.

The register will be annotated for three years to reflect these orders. Ms Osborne applied for a permanent order for non-publication of her name. This application was heard in private and was declined. The reasons for this were set out in a separate decision which has been suppressed.

Ms Osborne was ordered to pay 40 per cent of the CAC’s costs and 40 per cent of the tribunal’s costs.

But it was thanks to a close friend who nominated her for the honour and put her name in the bucket of contenders that has brought her the ticket to Nebraska.

he New Zealand country music scene just got a big golden ticket in the music world as local country singer Kylie Austin will be inducted into the Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.

She will be heading to Nebraska in October to attend the awards night and get the standing ovation that officially seals her induction into the Pioneer Music Museum for lifetimes to come.

A fan of country music since she was a youngster, Kylie has been making a scene in the country music world performing across countless stages and giving the American-born music a run for its money.

Her career spans more than 15 years and includes several awards across the Australasia country scene including the coveted Maton Talent Search and the Trans-Tasman Entertainer of the Year Award.

While country has always been a passion of Kylie’s, it wasn’t until she turned 17 that she decided it was the genre for her.

“When I turned 17 I got really into singing and I’ve been doing it every weekend, week night, anytime I can,” she says.

Graduating from the College of Country Music in Tamworth in Australia, Kylie has worked and produced two albums and is currently producing her third which will bring both old and new country music styles to the table.

The New Zealand country music scene is very much a niche which can make it difficult for those wanting to seriously make a go of it, she says.

“It’s a hard road because country music in New Zealand is such a small genre, it’s really hard to

It’s becoming clear that the Labour-led Government’s idea of being ‘kind’ and ‘caring’ simply means throwing more money at a problem and hoping it goes away.

The idea of incentivising work, and promoting a pathway that is proven to provide a better quality of life, simply doesn’t register.

That approach is something reflected in the latest benefits statistics. What they show is that, since coming into power, this Government has seen 15,000 more Kiwis reliant on a jobseeker benefit.

The jobseeker benefit is for people who can work but aren’t, for whatever reason. Under National, we required those on this benefit to prove they were actively seeking work in order to continue receiving state support.

The fact there are now so many more people claiming this benefit is proof the new government is no longer enforcing those requirements. The number of sanctions is down by more than 22 per cent

since September 2017 and it’s important to remember that they are only imposed as a last resort for those who consistently fail to take their obligations seriously.

Labour’s poor policies have seen the cost of living dramatically increase. Rents are up an average of $50 a week, there are more taxes on petrol and electricity prices are set to rise. Incomes aren’t going as far as they used to and despite employers crying out for new workers, there are thousands more people receiving a jobseeker benefit.

Of course, there will always be people who need short-term assistance. The benefit is an important safety net for New Zealanders who fall on hard times and that is exactly how it should be used, to give a helping hand in times of need.

But we know that long-term reliance on benefits provides poor outcomes. It’s important for people to up-skill, develop professionally and remain relevant in the job market. Being out of

the workforce for longer makes it harder to dive back in.

National is aspirational for Kiwis. It’s important we’re all able to live happy and independent lives, and pursue a brighter future. We want Kiwis creating opportunities for themselves and their families, as we know that children in households where parents work go on to lead better lives.

The Government has repeatedly claimed that one of its main priorities is combating child poverty. The increase in hardship grants, with over half a million of them since this government took power, shows that it’s simply getting tougher for families, not easier. Kiwis are struggling, and Labour has no plan.

New Zealanders, more than ever, can’t afford this Government.

The lovely legacy of Yvonne Featherstone Yvonne Featherstone’s 25 year career in New Zealand customs saw her make history as the first uniformed female customs officer in the country. In May, Yvonne passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service to others.

es Featherstone lost the love of his life this year. And New Zealand lost a pioneer for women in the workforce.

Yvonne Featherstone made history in 1973 as the country's first uniformed female customs officer, paving the way for women to make their mark in New Zealand customs.

When Yvonne first began working at Auckland Airport in 1970, a male customs officer could not search a female suspect so female police officers would do a search if available.

At the time, Yvonne was working as a customs clerk, and was asked if she would do the searches when required.

It wasn’t long before the customs department decided they needed full time female customs officers.

Yvonne was the first to accept the job, a historic appointment that would be the start of many firsts for the Pakuranga local.

She was joined by Noelene Chamberlain and Audrey Barnet.

Yvonne later processed the first passenger through the new international terminal and became the first female investigations officer in Customs.

“She was extraordinary. She loved her work and I am so proud of her,” says husband Les, who also worked at the airport. He was chief fire officer in the Crash Fire Department.

Les says the key to Yvonne’s success was that she always went the extra mile.

He said one day when she was working on a surveillance job for an investigation, she was in the car watching a house when the occupant came out.

“She had to embrace her work mate to make it look like a courting couple.

Good thing I’m not the jealous type,” Les laughs.

Les was his wife’s greatest supporter.

The pair met in Scotland in 1956.

Five weeks later Les proposed to Yvonne in a bright red Rolls Royce fire engine and the couple wed in an intimate ceremony on March 6, 1956. It was the beginning of a love story that would span more than six decades.

They returned to England together to start their family. “I loved her from the minute I met her and I knew she was the one for me,” he says.

Hearings, and question time with PM Hayley Xie from Macleans College had the opportunity to represent Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown at the Youth Parliament in Wellington.

Youth Parliament is held every three years.

Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend Youth Parliament 2019 as the Youth MP representing Simeon Brown, National MP for Pakuranga.

This event, in which 120 young people from across the country meet at Parliament to mimic the workings of our real New Zealand Government every three years, marked the pinnacle of our journey as Youth MPs. Upon arriving in Wellington, we attended an official tour and orientation evening.

Our first official day started off with the opening ceremony where I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with the lovely Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy.

Next, we headed into the debating chamber for Question Time with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and a few other Ministers, where I was able to ask the Minister of Finance on their recent plans of reducing debt to 20 per cent of GDP within the next three years.

The afternoon was jampacked with select committee hearings and submissions, as well as a short caucus meeting with various MPs.

Day two was similarly exciting, as we had our Legislative Debate on the Sustainable Energy mock bill, followed by an intense personal vote.

After lunch, we got the opportunity to listen to other youth MPs passionately speak on a wide range of issues in the General Debate.

I have gained so much experience during my tenure as Youth MP, and I look forward to further involving myself in civics education for our local youth.

My biggest thanks must go to MP Simeon Brown, for being an incredible mentor.

Eventually the pair moved to New Zealand for GBP 680.

She started out as a sales officer for the UEB before moving on to work for the airport because it was one of few places that offered her equal pay. She remained at the airport for 25 years.

After she retired, Yvonne became a foundation member of the Blue Coats hospitality ambassadors alongside Les. She spent 11 years in that role.

She also manned the police office at Pakuranga and worked for three years at the Citizens Advice Bureau at Pakuranga.

But her greatest love, Les says, was her family.

The couple had two children – daughter Janet and a son Mark – who they adored.

Five years ago, Yvonne started to become forgetful, says Les, which was the beginning of “that terrible disease” Parkinson’s and Dementia.

“I was devastated watching her deteriorate and knowing there was no getting better. I loved her and felt helpless. I know that she loved me right up until the end,” he says.

“I held her hand and kissed her and she smiled before passing away.”

Guide dogs need you T

here are many ingredients needed to breed and train a Blind Foundation guide dog.

This Friday, the most important one is you.

Bakers across the country will be hosting Bikkie Day parties on Friday July 26 to raise funds for the Blind Foundation NZ so they can continue their guide dog programme and you’re invited.

It takes two years and a significant investment to raise and train a guide dog. It’s a life-changing service which is entirely funded by charitable donations.

Starting with a sophisticated breeding programme, their development includes dedicated volunteer puppy raisers to teach them

the ways of the busy world we live in, and training and support from specialist trainers.

Guide dogs are one of the ways the Blind Foundation help people retain their freedom and independence after vision loss to move around safely and confidently.

They act as the eyes for Kiwis who are blind or have low vision.

They have a huge responsibility and are charged with making what could potentially be a life or death decision when navigating hazards.

Rotary awards celebrate stellar five S

everal community members were celebrated this week for their dedication and service to the community.

On Tuesday evening the Howick Rotary Club awarded its annual Apprentice of the Year Awards and the Police Award in front of an audience of around 60 people.

The winner of the Police Award was Sergeant Sarah Hill, who was recognised as a leader in the road policing field.

Hill graduated from Royal NZ Police College in July 1996 and moved to Counties Manukau in 2011, where her focus on road policing began.

Hill, the Counties Manukau road policing manager, was praised for her success in reducing serious crashes and her passion for keeping our roads and drivers safe.

The apprentice awards saw four talented young tradesmen applauded for their positive attitude towards learning their trade and dedication to further developing

their skills.

First place and a $1200 PlaceMakers voucher was awarded to 22-yearold Beachlands local Harley Peddie.

Peddie completed his apprenticeship in March this year and is currently pursuing licensing under the

LBP scheme.

Second place was awarded to Johann Kroese and third equal place was presented to Nash Ali and Jordan Schache.

Overall, a successful evening celebrating hardworking locals.

Bringing a splash of colour to Fashion Week L

Week on August 29 where the Resene Designer Runway will open with their designs – dresses, jumpsuits, shorts – in an explosion of vibrant colour.

“Bryony Acraman brought ancient armour, the story of Mulan and origami themes to her design in Resene Valour, developing an elegant contemporary dress with striking sculpted overskirt and subtle oriental feel,” a spokesperson said.

Karen Warman of Resene says: “We are proud of this project. It showcases 20 of our newest fashion colours at New Zealand Fashion Week while bringing visibility to fashion’s exciting young talent.

In October last year PURC congratulated its newest All Black squad member loose forward who gained selection in the 32 man touring squad to Japan and Europe.

Papalii became the club’s first All Black squad member to play for both the junior and senior playing ranks of the club. He also played for St Kent’s 1st XV while at high school.

He was this month named in the All Blacks 39-strong squad for the first two matches of the Investec Rugby Championship against Argentina and South Africa beginning this weekend.

ocal fashion designer Bryony Acraman is on a fast-track to New Zealand Fashion Week.

In six years, since the Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion project began, more than 75 students of fashion have been catapulted into the big-time.

The 2019 crop of fresh talent faced the judges in June. Judging day saw 39 extraordinary works of silk paraded by models in this season’s palette of fashion colours from Resene.

Crafted and nuanced by the students into contemporary fashion looks with “intricate design rationale”, bold creative expression and technical precision, the garments were put through their paces.

It’s a project where Resene collaborates with NZ Fashion Tech giving undergrads in their final year of study at campuses in Auckland and Wellington a chance to be part of a professional fashion shoot, direct their own portfolio images from behind the camera and feature in a Resene on-line gallery.

Calling all zero waste innovators Grants of up to $50,000 are available from Auckland Council for those with ideas on how to reduce waste.

The Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF) helps bring ideas to life and support the city to reach its target of zero waste to landfill by 2040.

WMIF funds projects from businesses, local iwi, and education and community groups that will divert waste from landfill. Council is encouraging Aucklanders focused on waste minimisation start-ups and initiatives to think about how WMIF funding could enhance or expand their work.

Grant application workshops are running from late July to early August across the region to help people prepare for the application round, which opens on 1 September and closes at the end of the month. Cr Penny Hulse, Chair of the environment and community committee, says the fund has been an important catalyst in fostering innovative waste minimisation projects.

everend Monsignor Raymond Green, the founding parish priest of St Mark’s Catholic Parish, died peacefully at St Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor in Herne Bay, aged 92.

It was during his appointment as assistant priest at Panmure, that Bishop Delargy asked him to found the parish of the yetto-be-built, St Mark’s Church in Pakuranga. At that time, the site of this large church of Pakuranga with its school was a farm with a derelict farmhouse and an old cowshed.

Father Green (as he was then known), who had formerly been a plumber, began masses in Edgewater College Hall. All the chairs had to be put out and returned after every mass. Everything required for the mass had to be brought to the college.

On other feast days, masses were celebrated in the Anglican and Methodist Churches of Pakuranga.

To save money, Father Green moved from his rented accommodation in Pakuranga into the old farmhouse, which long-time parishioner Veronica Smith said wasn’t fit for human habitation.

It had brambles growing through the walls and vermin.

Monsignor Green began as an assistant priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish Epsom, where he ministered as chaplain for the Carmelite Monastery and

at Green Lane Hospital. He rode a bicycle to the hospital to serve the patients, particularly the dying.

From there he was appointed Curate at St Peter Chanel Parish, Whakatane, with a special

assignment to form a new parish of St Gerard’s, Kawerau. He was then appointed to St. Andrew’s, Tuakau, with chaplaincy to the Marist Brothers’ Juniorate.

At this time, Meremere Power Station was being built and he looked after the construction staff on site. Father Green’s first appointment as a parish priest was at Tuakau. The following appointment was to Sacred Heart Parish, Ponsonby, where his duties included teaching at St. Paul’s College, Diocesan Director of Vocations and assisting St. Mary’s, Avondale, with Sunday masses.

Thames was his next home where he worked in the Parish of St Francis of Assisi and which included the whole Coromandel Peninsula.

He became a Monsignor in December 2007. He was parish priest at Christ the King in Owairaka where he served from 1983 until 2010 and from 2011 until 2015 as Pastor Emeritus.

A vigil mass will be celebrated at the Church of Christ the King, 260 Richardson Road, Owairaka on today (July 18) at 7.30pm. A requiem mass will be celebrated at St Mark’s Catholic Church, 334 Pakuranga Highway, Pakuranga tomorrow (July 19) at 11.30am.

The funeral will then leave for the Panmure Catholic Cemetery.

Una’s book sold out When Dr Una Grieve wrote her memoirs A Life Less Ordinary, the Memoirs of Dr Una Grieve she did not imagine that her story would be of great interest to people outside her immediate family.

However a delightful article written about the book by Farida Master for the Howick and Pakuranga Times on May 23, 2019, contributed to this limited edition being sold out in just a few months.

There is no current plan to publish a second edition. For keen readers who missed the opportunity to purchase their own copy of the book, it is available on loan from the Howick Library in Uxbridge Road, Howick.

AT has got this right We agree with Auckland Transport and support the promotion of public transport on Pakuranga Rd. It is our opinion that Simeon Brown has simply got this one wrong and we have just written to him to let him know this.

Public transport, walking, cycling and car pooling are all valid alterna-

tives to single use occupancy vehicles and all help to make the existing road network more reliable.

Not everyone can drive (children, elderly, vulnerable) and bus priority lanes are part of the solution.

We usually commute off peak to avoid traffic on Pakuranga Rd and find that 85 per cent of the time Pakuranga Rd traffic is busy but not congested.

In our opinion the AMETI project is a game changer in terms of the strategic public transport to the south east of our fine city and all efforts should concentrate on supporting and accelerating this project.

Our family support the swift implementation of the next phases of AMETI including the Reeves Rd flyover and the proposed major public and private investment in Pakuranga town centre.

Build it and they will come. Progress AMETI. Change and growth is good. Embrace it or move on.

T2/Bus lane achieving what?

Many motorists are finding the new lane designations confusing.

Many / most will not use these lines outside of the designated times they are in force.

Examples that I have had are that travelling to my chosen supermarket early afternoon I turn left into the designated lane from Abercombie then 50 metres later, left into the supermarket carpark.

At least three times in the last two weeks, other vehicles travelling down the second lane also going to the supermarket, have turned left across the front of me or straight at my vehicle, with twice these motorists venting anger towards me in the carpark.

The defence in each case for driving dangerously is they did not realise that the lane designations were for a limited morning time of 3 hours in the morning.

Subsequently, I have observed the great reluctance of vehicles to use the designated lanes in both directions on the highway outside of the prescribed times that are effective and that the designations have effectively reduced Pakuranga Highway by one lane for the majority of the day.

In my opinion it becomes debatable then of what is really being achieved by the new lane designations and the added dangers created throughout the rest of the day.

I am concerned about the potential effects to our shellfish beds at Cockle Bay. Construction on the sea wall has started and a large tracked vehicle is delivering rocks to the wall. This machine is progressively moving out on each trip trying to find a firm route. Sand has been placed along the existing wall and has only one soft patch that could be sorted with a load of ‘race’ rock (which) would allow rocks to be delivered without any further damage to the beach.

Mud and silt suffocate the shellfish. Council have been notified.

Selwyn Centre celebrates 15 years ■■By Sean Rouse

uests and volunteers past and present of the Howick Selwyn Centre came together recently to celebrate the Centre’s 15-year anniversary.

The milestone celebration saw around 80 guests enjoy a lively programme of social activities, gentle exercise and morning tea.

The Selwyn Centre at All Saints Anglican Church is a community drop-in centre for older people which provides seniors with a valuable opportunity to meet up two mornings each week in a friendly and positive environment.

The programme, which operates on Mondays and Fridays, welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds and aims to enhance older people’s social interaction and engagement in life and make a difference in the lives of those who may be lonely.

The Howick Selwyn Centre first opened at All Saints in 2004 under the guidance of former clergy team and Howick locals, Reverends Diane MillerKeeley and Bruce Keeley.

Knitter and Chatter Group Karen from Avenrose Florist in Rices Mall, Howick, and knitting enthusiast Ellie, have inadvertently started a knitting group which is growing in popularity.

They started knitting in Rices Mall and, as people passed, they were intrigued and more and more were keen to sit with them and knit and thus, the group has grown.

Ellie teaches at schools as a volunteer and is only too happy to help the knitters as required.

She also brings blankets for sitting outside in the mall but, if there is a cold blast, they usually move inside.

The Knitter and Chatter Group meets each Thursday from 2pm-3pm and everyone is welcome.

Max also shared his concern that he would be overwhelmed by boring homework and was pleased to find that homework was usually an interesting extension of class work or the completion of exciting projects.

For students needing extra support, Howick College offers a Homework and Tutoring Centre that is available to all students before and after school on a Thursday. Students can either take advantage of a quiet, supportive place to work or book free tutoring sessions with a senior student tutor.

Max and Juliet are both part of the Innovation Stream Programme that is available for Year 9, 10 and 11 students.

Last year, Howick Primary School joined the “Trees for Survival” environmental education programme which involves young people growing and planting native trees to restore natural habitats by helping landowners revegetate erosion prone land, improve stream flow and water quality and increase biodiversity.

In July 2018, a large box of tiny seedlings arrived and the children and teachers replanted these into plastic bags and then left them to grow in the newly established nursery area. Sue Crawshay, Programme coordinator for the Auckland Council based programme, commented that the trees had grown at double the normal rate as you can see by the pictures.

The purpose of the programme is “to create community partnerships by engaging schools, their community, local businesses and councils all working together to restore our natural heritage.”

As such, Howick Primary school is looking for a business partner who can sponsor the programme for this and subsequent years. It costs around $1000 each year to pay for seedlings, soil and maintenance of the plants. A sponsor will be able to advertise their support all over the nursery area as well as a profile on the school website and Facebook page. ow fitting Silver Ferns stalwarts Laura Langman, Maria Folau, Casey Kopua and Katrina Rore will bow out of international netball as reigning world champions having clinched the title 52-51 against Australia in Liverpool on Monday.

It may not be this year for all of them but it certainly will be before the next world championship in four year years time.

Each has been a special player, the dynamic Langman, aged 33, our best centre since Sandra Edge after converting from wing defence.

Although she made some uncharacteristic misses in the final before goaling 28 of 35 attempts, the unflappable Folau, 32, remains a beautiful shooter from any distance within the circle.

Kopua (nee Williams), 34, who came to fame as a Magic teenager alongside Langman and developed under current Ferns coach Noeline Taurua, no longer has the same springheeled elevation after suffering patella tendon and ankle ligaments injuries. But she retains her fierce competiveness and sharp court brain, as does Rore who effortlessly made the switch from goal keep to wing

Lively goal keep Jane Watson made many outstanding interceptions and deflections to deny England and Australia goals in a nail-biting semi-final and final won by two and one-point respectively.

Fox ties for 16th at Open Championship P

rofessional golfer Ryan Fox, from Beachlands, recorded his best major finish after tying for 16th place at the British Open which finished on Sunday.

Fox, ranked 95th in the world and 51st on the European Tour, made world sporting headlines on Friday after his first round at the 148th Open Championship. He became the first person in Open history to score a back-nine of 29 after shooting a three-under 68 at Royal Portrush.

Fox, 32, bogeyed three of his first nine to lie three-under and in a share of third, two shots off the lead after last Thursday’s round.

He made six birdies in his final seven holes at the County Antrim course, Northern Ireland, to earn himself a spot in the record books as the first person ever to break 30 on the back-nine of an Open Championship.

Fox, who has missed his last seven cuts in a row, said of the record: “That’s pretty cool. I did actually ask my caddie, ‘had anyone shot 29 for nine holes in a major’, and I’m sure that hap-

“You certainly don’t expect to do that. But it was nice to just get out of my own way and hit some decent golf shots and be a part of such a great event.”

Fox, son of All Black great Grant Fox, posted on Twitter on the Friday: “Well...that was fun! First time I’ve been able to say that in a while, and it’s a pretty cool feeling to make history and hold the record for the lowest back 9 (29) in an Open Championship.”

Meanwhile, his tie for 16th place earned him US$126,313 ($187,454). He finished on 2 under

282 for the tournament. The winner, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, finished on a 15 under 269 and won US$1.9m.

Fox posted on social media that it had been an incredible week at Royal Portrush.

“Unbelievable golf course, brilliant craic and stoked to record my best major finish with a T16.

The Howick Gymnastics Club Annual Recreational Competition has attracted a record number of entries this year.

Some 425 competitors from across Auckland will compete in the two-day event designed to give the region’s recreational gymnasts a chance to show off the skills.

“This is a big time of year for gymnastics when competitions are held nationwide for gymnasts of all levels,” says Howick Gymnastics Club centre manager Miranda Beattie.

“It’s fantastic that our recreational event has attracted so many entries this year. That’s great for our club and great for the sport.”

Boys and girls aged 5-17 years will compete in artistic gymnastics and tumbling on July 27 and 28 and are judged on the skills they have mastered, artistry and form.

“It’s a chance for the competitors to show off their routines, for parents to see the progress their children have made, and for everyone to have some fun which is so important in keeping kids excited and motivated about sport,” she says.

Miranda says competitions are an important fundraiser for the club that relies on the support of the community to keep operating.

“We’ve had tough times of late that have tested the club, which has been a part of the local community for more than 40 years.
