Finally the day arrived when a contingent of 40 Scouts plus 20 scout leaders and dads accompanying them, took off on Sunday to the 24th World Scout Jamboree in North America— the biggest scout jamboree with representatives from 180 different countries.

Seventeen-year-old Quentin Stephen from Edgewater College says there are over 150 million active scouts from all over the world and the jamboree brings together people from different cultures with different values, “which makes it an awesome experience”.

“The theme this year is ‘Unlock a New World’, which allows us to discover new things,” he says.

Jamboree is from July 22 – August 2 at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, “The US has been preparing the campsite for the jamboree since 2005.”

Quentin says that four years ago he was in Japan for the World Scout Jamboree and got to do things he would have never done otherwise. Like visiting Hiroshima and seeing how bombs are detonated.

That apart, he says being a scout has opened doors to Out-

ward Bound Trips, flying a helicopter in Nelson, running a 21k marathon and making lifelong friends.

Callum Clark also from the Venturers at Trinity Scouts Highland Park says that the trip is all about friendship, leadership and adventure.

The 16-year-old Saint Kentigern student has made a lot of friends like Quentin only because he has been in scouts since he was little.

Being his first international jamboree in West Virginia, Callum says he looks forward to travelling with his best friend and can’t wait to meet people from vastly different worlds.

The 21-day trip they say is not just about knots and woggles. It’s not just about just for boys either.

Girls are also part of Scouts.

In 1987, girls were officially allowed to join scouts.

The World Scout Jamboree which is about scouting fellowship unites the world’s young people to promote peace and create multi-sensory experiences.

‘MP continues push for Botany busway’ One of East Auckland’s busiest roads could be the key to unlocking local residents’ access to fast and efficient public transport.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is pushing for the creation of a rapid transit busway from Botany to Auckland Airport via Manukau that would run along Te Irirangi Drive in Flat Bush.

He says it’s logical for it to connect to the Eastern Busway, which will go from Pakuranga to Botany and is now under construction.

“When Te Irirangi Drive was built it was made wide enough to accommodate a busway or light rail,” Ross says.

“A rapid transit corridor down Te Irirangi Drive will benefit local public transport users but it will also alleviate congestion for car users by getting vehicles off the roads.”

Ross recently met officials from the New Zealand Transport Agency and Auckland Transport (AT) to get an update on a number of important projects, including the busway.

They told him about plans to improve public transport in east Auckland through construction of the Eastern Busway as well as the Airport to Botany project, which is being led by AT. Ross says he’s used his voice in Parliament to question Transport Minister Phil Twyford on behalf of the local community about the busway.

He was an elected member of the Manukau City Council when the Eastern Busway, then known as AMETI, was first announced in 2006.

That project has taken too long to get under way and he wants to ensure similar delays don’t happen with the busway

between Botany and the airport, Ross says.

“It’s great to see the Eastern Busway finally being constructed but we spent so long talking about it before the work started.

“Howick and Botany have often been forgotten when it comes to public transport. That isn’t good enough.”

Ross says traffic congestion on local roads is still a major problem and addressing it is one of his main priorities.

“We aren’t going to begin to tackle this challenge without encouraging more people to get out of cars and onto public transport.

“That won’t happen until the latter becomes a better option than taking a car. It’s got to be fast and efficient, easy to access and affordable.”

AT says it’s identified Te Irirangi Drive as the “best and most direct route” between Botany and Manukau.

The agency says the project will improve access between east and south Auckland as well as to the major employment areas of the airport and Manukau.

It will also significantly improve travel choices, reliability and journey times and support growth opportunities along the route.

A new $60 million rail and bus interchange being constructed in Puhinui is expected to open in early 2021 and is being delivered in two stages.

The first stage is an “early deliverable” of the airport to Botany rapid transit project.

It forms part of the wider Southwest Gateway programme which also involves the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Airport.

t is not very often that you get to see a professional ice hockey star play locally, more so when he happens to be Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter and rock legend Rod Stewart’s son.

On July 20 and 21 the local Botany Swarm Ice Hockey team will take on Liam’s NZ squad, the SkyCity Stampede from Queenstown at Paradice Ice Rink, Botany.

There promises to be a lot of exciting action with the best local players complimented by the most skilled ice hockey players, all showing the speed and skill it takes to play this fast-paced game.

Raised in Los Angeles, Liam got hooked on to ice-hockey in the United States.

He played football until his famous parents took him to a New York Rangers game when he was 14 and he decided to pursue ice hockey.

The five ice hockey teams which make NZ Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) are Botany Swarm, West Auckland Admirals, Skycity Stampede (Queenstown), Dunedin Thunder and Canterbury Red Devils (Christchurch).

Each team are allowed to have four imports from other countries.

Some of the players in the Botany Swarm have been playing since the league inception back in 2005.

Currently the Botany Swarm sits second on the leader board ahead of the final rounds of the season.

The team is based at their home rink, Paradice Ice Arena, Botany.

The Botany Swarm have success-

fully won the coveted NZIHL Championship four times in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Family displaced after Maraetai blaze A Givealittle page has been started to help a Maraetai family which lost everything in a house fire last week.

Smoke was seen billowing across Maraetai as firefighters battled a house fire on Craig Road last Thursday.

Fire engines from Otara, Howick and Manurewa responded to the fire at around 1.45pm, but back-up was required, bringing the total number of engines to 11, media reported.

A neighbour confirmed the family is devastated, but nobody was hurt.

A Givealittle page has been set up for the family of four.

The page reads: “Their home is gone and most of their belongings have been lost. The family have insurance but there will be a shortfall and the funds will take time to process.

Their expenses are far beyond their means to pay them right now.”

Ashley confronts the challenges She’s just 3 years old and is working out a strategy to address cerebral palsy. Schools and businesses can help taking part in fundraising event, Steptember, a campaign encouraging Kiwis to take 10,000 steps per day for 28 days.

shley Jia-Qi Neilson would probably not be as patient and dedicated if she didn’t have cerebral palsy (CP), says Ashley’s mum Victoria Wen-xin Neilson.

“She’s a much more dedicated and observant child because she must constantly improve and watch out for danger,” says Victoria.

Because of Ashley’s CP – a physical disability that affects movement and posture – she has a much better and supportive family than if she didn’t have CP, her mum admits.

“Having to deal with all the unexpected and challenging situations, I have changed almost completely as a person.

“I’ve not talked to my father much for years, however, due to the challenging situations that came with Ashley, we are now a much closer family than before.”

And the biggest challenge for Ashley, who attends Pakuranga Baptist Kindergarten?

“It’s hard to limit to one challenge,” says Victoria.

“Ashley depends on others to get to where she needs as she can’t walk without assistance, while at the same time, she has issues making others aware of what she needs because of her struggles with speech.

“Cognitively she is doing well but it will be hard for others to realise this and treat her appropriately.”

and her husband Derek’s daughter as the Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand begins to ramp up marketing for its annual campaign.

Office workers walk on average 3000 steps a day and the Cerebral Palsy Society wants Kiwi workers to

step it up for Steptember, to raise important funds for people living with cerebral palsy.

The Steptember campaign challenges New Zealanders to take 10,000 steps a day for 28 days in the month of September (Sept 3-30),

or the equivalent exercise from a choice of 40 alternate activities.

Participants can log their steps online or via the Steptember app using a supplied pedometer given to them when they sign up. The fundraiser has been designed for

work colleagues and schools to form a team of four participants, with last year’s event seeing nearly 17,000 compete in the challenge.

Organisers are also offering to the first 100 schools registering a full team of four students and/or teachers, an additional 30 pedometers and all funds raised by the school go into the official team bucket.

Gilli Sinclair, chief executive of the Cerebral Palsy Society, says she hopes every school that participates in the ‘First 100 schools challenge’ will meet the goal of raising at least $10 from each student who has received a free pedometer.

She says schools and employers recognise that supporting Steptember sends a powerful message to their workforce or community that their organisation recognises the importance of keeping active and nurturing their health and wellbeing.

Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability amongst children, with one in every 500 children born in New Zealand being affected by this lifelong condition. ➤➤Registration is $25 per participant, which includes a pedometer delivered to you, and the chance to win many prizes.

Mission Heights win Sportsmanship Cup T

he rain and cold temperatures couldn’t dampen the spirits of Mission Heights Junior College and the other eight intermediate school teams competing at the annual Totara Springs Christian Sports Camp in Matamata.

The event, which ran from July 1-5, involved Schools from Auckland, Matamata, Tauranga and Hamilton.

For the second consecutive year, Mission Heights positive attitude towards the competition and their respect for opposing teams won them the Sportsmanship Cup, an award voted for by all competing teams.

Is Howick Market in jeopardy?

A

battle is brewing over the old Howick Library building in Fencible Drive – and it could jeopardise the future of the Howick Market.

The Howick Village Association (HVA) has held keys to the ageing building at 16 Fencible Drive for a decade, according to one HVA member. The building was used for storing equipment used in the community.

Now the HVA has been locked out

by Panuku Development, Auckland Council’s development arm, citing public safety.

HVA president Ken Scott said Howick businesses are not impressed, particularly as they were given very short notice. “We’re not happy about it,” he said. “We got notification about a month-and-a-half ago that they wanted us to exit it. The issue now is it’s going to be a challenge to find somewhere close to the market (for storage).”

Before the locks were changed at the old library on Monday, June 24, awnings and gazebos used to shelter the Howick Market stalls were stored there for the week. The equipment is used for winter protection in the “wind tunnel” they occupy in the village square each Saturday. Now we may have to consider closing the market,” said Scott.

The Howick market has operated in some capacity for around 22 years.

It was called the Howick Bazaar and, in its present format with gazebos etc, it has run for approx 13.

opened in 1997 the old library was left vacant and largely unused.

The old library has provided a handy and free storage lock-up for the HVA, Christmas Lighting Trust and, to a lesser extent, the Radio Trust. The contents occupied a good proportion of the ground floor.

Scott has also underlined his dissatisfaction with inaction by the Howick Local Board – except for member Jim Donald. “They’ve not done anything on this at all,” he said.

There is frustration too that an idea for development or maintenance of the building has been put to the local board in the past but was rejected. A number of Howick businesses had also expressed a desire

to buy the building but that too came to nothing. Storage – especially for the crucial Howick Market equipment – is the priority, he said.

At the moment they’re using storage space at the RSA on Wellington Street although Panuku has come to the party, temporarily at least, with a container in which to store Howick Market equipment. It is positioned near the old library. “Our next step is to find something close to Howick Village Market.”

Meanwhile Ian Wheeler, director of portfolio management for Panuku told the Times the Fencible Drive building is no longer safe for use by the Howick Village Association or any member of the public.

“Our priority is to ensure people’s safety so we let the HVBA (HVA) know as soon as it was deemed unsafe,” said Wheeler.

“Local markets help make town centres vibrant and enjoyable places and contribute to local economies so we want to do all we can to help the Howick market thrive. As to the old library’s future, and timing, nothing further is forthcoming from Panuku.

“The site may be needed for future transport needs but there are a number of issues to work through with Auckland Transport and other stakeholders before a decision is made,” said Wheeler.

Fight against 71 units continues On July 1 and 2, a hearing was held allowing the residents of Reydon Place to express their opposition to commissioners to the proposed redevelopment of 30, 40 Sandspit Rd. The applicant has a right of reply, before a decision is made on whether the development of 71 apartments will go ahead.

very submission put to a two-day hearing concerning a proposed large-scale apartment development in Cockle Bay has been against the project.

Voices of notified community members have been heard on the proposal.

Three hearings commissioners last week heard presentations on the proposed development of 30 and 40 Sandspit Road, prior to making a decision on whether or not to grant a consent.

The development of what’s commonly known as the old Stewards Motors site would include the construction of an apartment building with approximately 70 apartments, a swimming pool and a cafe open to the public. Speaking rights were limited to the applicant (the developer and his support team), council staff and the notified submitters.

Submissions were presented by 14 notified residents, all in opposition to the proposed development.

Chair of the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association Laurie Slee said it was also encouraging to hear members of the Howick Local Board speak in opposition to the proposed development.

Until very recently the board had been very passive in advocating on behalf of local residents, Slee said.

Board chair David Collings and board members Adele White, accompanied by John Spiller, presented to the hearing commissioners stating that they support intensification but believe the proposed development is unsuited to

the location.

In their presentation they said the development could bring with it significant problems to the immediate and wider neighbourhood, and that allowing it to proceed could set a dangerous precedent.

“They spoke of concerns regarding traffic, the impact on schools, additional vehicular traffic, inadequate and dated stormwater and sewerage infrastructure and the flooding and damage that has already occurred,” Slee said. “[They also spoke of ] the potential disastrous results from the additional load on current infrastructure, the fact that the Local Board will not be in a position to fund extensive and expensive remedial work resulting from the development, and the fact that the development does not fit with the character of the area.”

Slee said the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association welcomed the board decision to be more proactive and become involved in the hearing process, echoing the concerns of many local people.

He said that, at one point, the chair of the hearing commissioners praised the quality of the submissions presented. “The commissioners also did not accept at face value the statements made by the developer and planners that the development should be approved because it complied with the definition of an Integrated Residential Development,” he said.

The applicant now has a right of

reply to all the submissions before the Commissioners make a decision on the application.

The right of reply is to be presented by the end of July, with a decision on the application relatively soon after that.

Comment has been sought from both the Howick Local Board and Auckland Council.

Women as Warriors – sustainable fashion show at Botany Library A

fashion show combining style, environmental sustainability and travel essentials was held at Botany Library on July 13, with the theme of ‘Women as Warriors’.

The night began with live music from a saxophone player, as more than 180 attendees took their seats.

Models then showcased re-fashioned denim jackets, and the Flying Hanger collection by local designer and fashion stylist Estelle Pape.

Estelle said, “The re-fashioned denim jackets were all about sustainability to give new life to gently worn clothes and in doing so, saving our planet”.

The guests were treated to a glimpse of Estelle’s Flying Hanger collection.

Estelle also introduced her charity, ‘Sophisticoated’, which gifts re-fashioned jackets to women who are undergoing challenges, to remind them of the warriors they are.

Margaret Lay, one of the Botany Library staff members said, “Botany Library is not just a “house of books”, it is a center for community engagement and enrichment. Events like these enable greater cohesion between local businesses like the Flying Stylist, Botany Library and the wider community.”

Chess club marks 50th

The Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club this week celebrated its 50 anniversary.

The club held a banquet at its clubrooms at Howick Bowling Club on Monday which brought to a conclusion eight days of chess commencing with the New Zealand Junior Champs for four days, immediately followed by the Oceania Seniors from July 12 to July 15. Grandmaster Dejan Bojkov was guestspeaker on this night which was attended by past and present club members and visitors from Australia.

Special guests was club founder Kenzie Sutton and daughter Pippa.

Others included Auckland Councillor Paul Young, QC Paul Heath, Jim Benson (patron of NZ Chess Federation), along with many other representatives from the NZ Chess Federation and many former club members.

Mystery fireworks Wondering where and what the enormous fireworks were across the Tamaki River on Saturday night?

Mystery solved? It’s part of the Te Ara Rama Matariki Light Trail, now in its 8th year. It is an annual freeto-the-public outdoor lighting festival combining light, music, and creativity across nine nights in Maybury Reserve, near the Glen Innes shopping village. Pak’nSave Glen Innes Matariki Fireworks Spectacular – as it’s called - lit up the night sky at 9.30pm for the festival finale.

Another fireworks display on Saturday also startled many people at

around 6.30pm on Saturday. It was part of the Renault French Festival at Queens Wharf in celebration of Bastille Day.

Community grants New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) awarded a number of grants in the Auckland region in June. The only local recipient this month is Anchorage Park School which was granted $2500 to go towards a gymnastics skills coaching programme.

Gaming venues that contributed to these grants in Auckland included Barrel Inn, Howick; Celsius Bar, Flat Bush; Xtreme Botany, Northpark.

Lloyd Elsmore Park and Ride Auckland Transport has announced that the Park and Ride service from Lloyd Elsmore Park will be launched on July 30.

It will accommodate 300 vehicles. The Park and Ride will further enable people to use the T2 lane as it will include an express shuttle service from the park directly to Panmure Station.

It is part of a wider traffic management plan to ease congestion during the construction period of the Eastern Busway. It follows the introduction of a T2/Bus Lane along Pakuranga Road.

It’s been two weeks since Auckland Transport (AT) launched its T2/Bus Lane along Pakuranga Road.

An express bus service along Pakuranga Road has also been launched, as well as the introduction of a recommended speed during peak times of 50km/h, down from the usual 60km/h.

Launching on July 30 is a park and ride service from Lloyd Elsmore Park.

In the months leading up to the launch of the T2/Bus Lane, residents expressed scepticism about whether the bus lane would actually improve traffic conditions along Pakuranga Road.

Many feared it would instead impede traffic by reducing the three lane road to two, with very few motorists making use of the T2 Lane.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown has strenuously opposed the T2 Lane, most recently accusing AT of hoping to slow Pakuranga Road down by reducing the speed limit at peak times to 50km/h.

“While it may only be an advised speed at present, it makes clear AT’s desire to slow down Pakuranga Road, which is already suffering from long travel times due to traffic congestion in the area,” Brown says.

“They claim the purpose of the lower speed limit is to make it safer for traffic to move in and out of the T2 lane while it is in operation, but if they were truly concerned about this they would have taken the community’s suggestion on board to extend the 50m clearance and give motorists more space to switch lanes.”

However the first official data has been released on how the T2 lane affects the wider network of

traffic and single occupant vehicles travelling along Pakuranga Road.

And according to the data, travel time remains almost the same as it did before for the majority of motorists.

An AT spokesperson says there is always a ‘bedding in period’ when transit lanes are introduced, early indications show that it is being utilised by multiple occupant vehicles with no evidence of delays to general traffic.

The AT data shows that before the T2 lane the average travel time between Botany Road /Pakuranga Road intersection and Ti Rakau Drive from Mondays to Fridays between 7am and 9am for all vehicles in May and June 2019 was 10.4 and 9.4 minutes respectively.

The data shows the average travel time for the same distance from Monday to Thursday in the first week of the T2 being operational between 7am and 9am for all vehicles is 10.1 minutes.

“This demonstrates that there has been some positive behavioural change by local communities, whether it be adopting public transport, changing travel routes or travelling outside of peak travel hours.”

The spokesperson says the advised speed of 50km/h has been introduced on all Panmure-bound lanes between Dunrobin Place and Gossamer Drive while the T2 lane is operational (6am – 10am, Mon – Fri) to encourage motorists to safely drive to the new road conditions and layout. ➤➤ Now the question is how are you finding the T2/Bus Lane? t was a night when the stars came out to walk the red carpet at the Rotary Oscars- the glitzy Changeover night for the Rotary Club of Somerville at the Apothecary, Howick.

The A-listers were at their glamorous best as trigger-happy paparazzi got their best profiles.

The turn-out was great as the suave presidents – past and present – from neighbouring Rotary Clubs including Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Highbrook, Howick, Pohutukawa Coast, East Tamaki Botany and Auckland South along with Rotary Club of Somerville club members, family, friends, past members attended the ceremonial installation of the new president.

District Governor Gary Langford with wife Jan made quite an entrance and said they loved the vibrancy of the club members.

Andrew Harvey, the MC for the evening, kept the tempo upbeat as American saxophonist Fred Baker and his talented daughter Maila set a beautiful tone for the evening.

Past President Lisa James gave a quick round-up of the year, followed by the district governor handing over the ceremonial chains to the current president Farida Master, and the new board of directors being introduced.

A jazz dance performance by 11-year-old Millie Rowe from Neverland Studios added a special touch. Millie is heading to the US in two weeks for the World Hip Hop championship.

Adding to the fun factor were the well-orchestrated Oscar Awards hosted by Rotarian Leone Dunn.

Locals tackling local crime Community safety has improved a lot over the years, mostly as a testament to the professionalism of our local police, but also to the efforts of people like the dedicated volunteers of the Botany Crime Watch Patrol.

This community organisation was founded 15 years ago. Its ranks are filled with locals who care about their local patch.

I joined two Crime Watch patrollers as they went out on patrol last Saturday night. They serve as the eyes and ears of our local police, who cannot be everywhere all the time.

Patrollers observe and report suspected criminal activity. I don’t know how many crimes they’ve stopped over the years but it’s bound to be a big number.

Over the years as Dannemora and Botany has grown, much of the low level crime, like burgla-

ries, car theft, and graffiti, has been cleaned up through the efforts of these volunteer patrollers.

They do an amazing job helping to reduce crime in our local East Auckland community. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.

Botany Crime Watch Patrol is always looking for new volunteers so if helping to keep the area safe sounds like something you’d like to do, give Margaret a call on 09 274 9449.

Also doing their bit to fight crime is a group of Northpark residents who are sick of the antisocial activity that’s been happening at Tarnica Park for some time.

Your view Musick Point needs our help What is happening to Musick Point?

No longer a beautiful and aweinspiring place to visit. It was a lovely place to take the family, older visitors and relations – and a popular tourist destination.

Unfortunately, it has become a magnet for people who treat it as their own private fun-park – to speed/race/do burnouts, throw their take-away packaging/bottles/ cans out of the window, rip up the grass, use the bushes as open toilets, pull up the fencing – and indulge in other activities not suitable for family viewing. ➤➤Some background:• Musick Point covers the entire area from the junction where Musick Point branches off the end of Clovelly Road – all the way to the radio station.

• Musick Point is private property – it is not ‘public’ or council property.

• Nobody has the right to be on it except the owners and lessees. Visiting is a privilege not a right –problem visitors can be trespassed off the property.

• It is important to note Auckland Council have nothing to do with it expect the coastal edges – despite the fact that the place is littered with council signs, they advertise it on their web site - and it appears their staff that have the sorry task of cleaning up the litter.

• The custodians are: The Crown/ LINZ, parts are owned/and potentially owned by Ngai Tai ki Tamaki.

Many locals avoid accessing the point as they find it too depressing to see what it has become – and some are frightened of being hit by vehicles or threatened by vehicle owners if they ask them to slow down. Owners/lessees are fully aware of the issues – the police are supportive – with some good results having been achieved as a result of the public reporting bad behaviour and collecting number plates. ➤➤Suggested fixes: • The current closure at 6pm has seen a significant reduction in local afterhours traffic and bad behaviour – so extend this to close at 5pm all year round – does not fix the issues of day time anti-social behaviour.

• Fence or put in a ditch to protect the grassed areas - and add speed bumps, more cameras – cost.

• Close the point to all vehicles.

Whilst allowing limited access to pre-approved groups (radio group, golf club staff, retirement homes) • There is apparently no money to put in traffic calming measure, so it might end up being closed altogether, which is sad for everyone else – and all because the anti-social, selfish part of society.

We are hoping to work with the local groups (like the BB Ratepayers group), build a Facebook page and help gauge local opinions on options.

In the meantime, I encourage the community to continue to report

bad behaviour – don’t ignore it - to the Howick police, to *555 and to Colliers Corporate (Wellington), Spark Property Department and Crown Property at LINZ. You are not alone!

The Wellbeing budget has come and gone. Not much has changed.

Taxpayer dollars have been allocated to various needy causes and that is OK, but nothing changes. The moral compass of our country still stands pointing south.

It amazes me that the root causes for requiring a Wellbeing budget in the first place is not addressed. Our Finance Minister, the PM and Deputy PM are the blind leading the blind.

They stumble when they should lead. Great leaders are moral leaders who establish a moral vision for their country.

They bring a nation like ours nearer to God, not further away. All we have witnessed is a tinkering with the finance figures and the left wing funding of the ‘victim mindset’. The reason for our mental sickness, our high suicide rates, the high prison populations, are all the result of removing Godly guidance from our cultural framework.

When God is taken out of our Parliament, out of our Universities and our schools, taken out of our family lives and when our sporting clubs throw a tantrum when a major player speaks the truth of God’s word - then we all suffer and continue the downward spiral of worsening societal pain.

Wake up NZ for God’s Wellbeing.

Press into that good and abundant life to which God has destined us to live.

Bus driver a hero

I was running up to catch a 70x H&E bus on June 19 when I fell and hit my head on the road.

The bus driver must have seen me in his rear vision mirror. He and a passenger picked me up and helped me on the bus. Another passenger put some sticking plaster strips on my head and, as I had an appointment at Auckland Hospital, the driver diverted the bus to go by the hospital to drop me off where I spent the next week.

I would like to thank all these people who helped me, especially the bus driver who I think was named Sandeep.

Long joyful journey to big 25th ■■By PJ Taylor

obnail’s good-vibe trail through a quarter of a century tells the story of a band and people getting better at their music craft and lives.

The well-travelled Wellington group with devoted fans across New Zealand, including in East Auckland, celebrate their 25th anniversary at a time when, collectively and as individuals, they’re hitting a peak of their musical powers.

Where many bands struggle to happily make two years, let alone 25, Hobnail go from strength to strength because of their great understanding of each other’s playing style and thinking, and the exceptional quality of original music they write and interpret.

Drummer Caroline Easther, the Kiwi music legend who has played for The Chills, The Verlaines and Beat

Jo Moir, Caroline Easther, Rob Joass and Hamish Graham.

Rhythm Fashion in her hugely interesting career, and has just released her first solo album Lucky, says “my favourite thing about Hobnail is that

Guitarist and main lead vocalist Rob Joass, Hobnail’s chief songwriter, who has also just delivered

his second solo album Pencarrow, says: “I’m really proud we’ve steered our own path and kept challenging ourselves to improve.”

Joass is known as a songwriter’s songwriter, a master wordsmith who wears his heart on his sleeve, prolifically turning out song after song about life – ups and downs, love and heartache, and the road to happiness and redemption.

Jo Moir smiles and sways her way through live performances, shining on rockin’ folk-style violin and soulful vocals. “To sing four-part harmonies is quite a thing when it all comes together. Feels like magic.”

Bassist Hamish Graham says: “Hard work will beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When it does, stand back and watch the magic.”

Hobnail started as the Hobnail Boots in 1994, but by the fifth album, Baggage, in 2012, when they were hitting high notes and generating

more attention, they removed Boots from the title.

Fortune Horses was an acclaimed album, a finalist for Best Folk Album at the 2009 NZ Music Awards, while Baggage was an all-encompassing illustration of their maturing altcountry Celtic folk-rock, with the title track nominated as a finalist for Best Country Song at the 2013 NZ Music Awards.

Following albums, String Things in 2015 and Blue Sky Songs in 2017, have also hit the right chords with loyal fans.

“I’ve loved the opportunity to develop as a singer and player,” Joass says. “Working with musicians who are supportive and also wanting to improve.”

To celebrate the 25th birthday, Hobnail is releasing a Best Of compilation during their national tour that takes them to The Wine Cellar in Auckland on Friday, July 19.

Theatre

Harlequin Theatre brings good company Poignant and often funny, Company recently played on the West End and topped the list of the 2019 Olivier Award nominations with nine nominations including Best Musical Revival.

And now Company, written by Stephen Sondheim, will be performed at the Harlequin Theatre.

The show tells the story of Bobby, who on the night of his 35th birthday, is reflecting on his

bachelor status when compared to his married friends and the three women he is dating.

The show is being led by Grant Meese, one of New Zealand’s finest musical theatre directors, who says the revival and its success is testament to the relevance of the themes that Company addresses.

“Everyone has a Bobby in their life, be it male or female – who may be for various reasons

not confirming to traditional notions of marriage or ‘settling down’. Company does a fantastic job of considering this in a funny and thoughtful way,” he said.

“Our cast have the talents and energy to really make the most of this challenging score and witty dialogue. Howick residents should feel proud of Harlequin for attracting this calibre of performer.”

The show features popular songs including ‘Being Alive’, ‘You Could Drive a Person Crazy’ and ‘Ladies who Lunch’.

The season runs from Saturday July 27 and there are strictly 10 shows only.

Auckland Council monthly housing update for July A

lmost 90 per cent of Auckland’s new dwellings consented in May were in urban areas, and 62 per cent were denser housing types such as apartments and townhouses.

Penny Pirrit, director urban growth and housing at Auckland Council says the figures from council’s latest housing report reflect what is set out in Auckland’s long-term growth plan.

“The Auckland Plan, which looks 30-years ahead, states that most future growth will occur within the existing urban areas, with less sprawl into rural areas, so it’s pleasing to see the consenting data reflect this.

“The change in Auckland’s housing stock is becoming more pronounced and this is being driven by increasing numbers of Aucklanders wanting to live close to work, near commuting options and in low-maintenance properties.”

“The Unitary Plan is enabling more homes to be built in areas where people want to live. By removing much of the density controls that prevented intensification in some parts of the city, we’ve made it easier for new types of homes to be delivered for Aucklanders,” says Mrs Pirrit.

Auckland’s improving public transport networks are also influencing where new homes are built, with 29 per cent of new dwellings consented within 1500 metres walking distance of a rapid transport network.

Key findings:

➤➤1657 dwellings were consented in May 2019. ➤➤In the year ending May 2019, 13,881 dwellings were consented in the region. ➤➤35 per cent of new dwellings

consented in May 2019 were houses, 28 per cent were apartments and 37 per cent were townhouses, flats, units, retirement village units, or other types of attached dwellings. ➤➤238 dwellings were consented on Housing New Zealand or Tamaki Regeneration Company

Consents still rising The latest dwelling consents figures confirmed that the ramping up of construction activity across NZ isn’t finished yet, despite signs of capacity constraints around labour and materials in the industry, according to CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson.

“For the year to May, there were 34,672 new consents issued, the highest figure since December 1974 and putting us firmly in the midst of one of the three biggest new building booms on,” he said.

“Consents for alterations and additions are also pretty buoyant, albeit the total value for the year to May of $1.77 billion was about $90m lower than the peak of $1.86m in the 12 months to July last year.”

The Unitary Plan is enabling more homes to be built in areas where people want to live.

Midfield Back Saleaula (Aula) Silipa (28) and hooker/captain Michael (Beefy) McBeath (29) have both been premier leaders in the revitalisation of Pakuranga rugby over the last 10 years and becoming centurions together had them amped for a big game.

“Pakuranga looks after its players from its youngest to us Premiers” said Silipa “The old boys make a real effort to ensure not only our rugby but our working lives and families are top priority.”

McBeath said: “Having been at the club since U7s, this place is my life, it’s a part of me and it always will be, I can’t wait for Saturday.” ➤➤Saleaula Silipa Aula started his Rugby with the club in the summer of 2008/9 for the 7s side as a 17-year-old graduate of Edgewater College. Every time I needed a job, someone in the club was there to help me out. ➤➤Michael McBeath Beefy started his rugby at the club in 2007 as an U7 player (funnily enough it was for the Pumas), He then played all the way through to the U15s before playing for Howick College and Sacred Heart College. He was soon back to play U19s and U21s before debuting for the Premiers in 2012 against Mt Wellington. After a 2-year stint in England, he came back and is currently captaining the side. A more prouder Pakuranga man we don’t think you would find.

Most influential team mate: Hands down G-Money (Gareth Arlidge), He organised our team so well for many years.

ricket’s greatest World Cup won by one Kiwi and lost by 11.

That was the amazing scene on the hallowed turf of Lords on Monday morning NZ time after the scores had been tied on 241 and the Super Over at 15 runs apiece.

The difference was England scored more boundaries, 26 compared with New Zealand’s 17.

Yet the Black Caps could have won. Should have won but for Christchurch-born England hero Ben Stokes who top scored with 84 that included a boundary off his sliding bat from a Martin Guptill throw that reaped six runs instead of a hard-run two.

Stokes, the son of Kiwis rugby league prop Gerard, also delivered killer blows in that Super Over 15 that Jimmy Neesham and Martin Guptill equalised before the latter was run out.

What a game! What a shame! Yet for nerve-tingling drama on cricket’s finest stage it was fantastic.

At the end England’s sporting Irish captain Eoin Morgan held the trophy aloft on a day there were no losers despite the Black Caps gutted feelings.

Back home, a nation of fewer than 5 million citizens had cause for pride, not only at taking mighty England

That is not to belittle the brave McCullum, who gave his team belief and thrilled with his belligerent batting. But Williamson’s coolness under fire sets him apart.

Particularly impressive was Lockie Ferguson who added guile to his pace in mixing up his deliveries.

Once again the fielding was often outstanding with Guptill, Boult, Neesham and Ferguson taking spectacular catches and wicketkeeper Tom Latham tidy behind the stumps.

Finally, congratulations to live Sky Sport television commentators Ian Smith, Brendan McCullum and Simon Doull for an outstanding coverage of a tournament in which the ugly ducklings came so close to winning a cricket beauty contest.
