rom establishing a school to watching it grow into its teenage years, has been a huge learning journey for Mary Wilson.

Now it’s time to leave her “baby” after 14 years and coach 32 other school principals in New Zealand.

As the founding principal of Baverstock Oaks School, established from a derelict farmhouse in Flat Bush, the educationist, who is internationally known for coaching teachers and principals from Norway and Denmark, will be handing over the baton at the end of term one to someone who believes in the deeprooted values of the school.

Values like servant leadership, parental partnership, shared ownership, enhancing the power of thinking and reflection have all contributed towards a high quality learning environment.

When the Board of Trustees first asked about Mrs Wilson for a vision of a still-to-beestablished school in an area that would cater to a multicultural diaspora, she said she imagined the school to be a well in a village and hoped that everyone would come to

Later, when the school was established in 2005, she stepped aside and asked the students, parents, teachers and staff about their vision for the school.

“I have been a teacher since I was 20 and been a life-long learner. I broke the practice and set up a shared vision process because I wanted every voice to be heard,” says the former founding deputy principal of Somerville Intermediate.

“It’s not about me but about us. It’s “we go” and not ego. I believe in servant leadership with the leader being here to serve the community. It’s about drawing from everyone’s strength so that they feel valued.

“Our multicultural learning has been huge and we’ve had parents add value by their active participation.”

The school encourages parents teaching children about their cultural beliefs that students then share with their

teachers and class mates.

The principal who believes children are the centre of our universe proudly says that the students of Baverstock Oaks are from 57 different nationalities.

In 2005 the primary school was first established with a roll of just 59 students.

“By the end of 2008 we had 862 students from Year 1-Year 8. In 2009, we cut back to Year 1-6 since Mission Heights Junior College was established and our roll went to 530.

The 58- year-old grandmother of six who set up a strong foundation of ‘feedback and feed-forward’ culture is now moving on to support other communities of schools in New Zealand.

She says that much as she is going to miss the school this is but a “change of space”.

The Ministry of Education has offered the highly regarded educationist an opportunity to coach a community of 19 schools up North along with five iwi.

She will also be facilitating 13 school principals in leading and managing change in the South Island, along with the police and health sector.

Passionate about developing shared visioning programmes, Mrs Wilson has been running Bats, an institute for learning with her husband Lab for several years.

“We motivate and lead the development of strategies to enable people and organisations to take ownership of their own journey of learning and change.

“But before that it is important to be crystal clear on why we are doing it, and in that every voice must be heard.”

King tides return

Flood waters again crept across Maraetai Drive on Thursday (February 1) due again to the king tides. Times photographer Wayne Martin shot this image. While not nearly as disastrous as the flooding which hit the same spot in a major storm just weeks beforehand (January 5 and 6), residents and store owners were still understandably very anxious. Auckland Transport reported a short section of The Parade (between Devon Rd & Hattaway Ave) in Bucklands Beach had to be closed due to tidal flooding.

Changing lives in Uganda This summer holidays were a little different for one local family who travelled halfway across the world and met their sponsor children for the first time.

Last December the Ward family travelled to Uganda to spend Christmas with family they had living there.

The trip proved life-changing when they were given the opportunity to visit the children whose lives they had been changing through Tearfund’s child sponsorship programme.

“I had always wanted my children to be grateful for what they have and realise that they are capable of making a difference in somebody else’s life,” Kristin Ward says.

The Ward family had chosen to sponsor children in Uganda, knowing that with family living there as well, they had a real possibility to one day meet the children.

“I thought about how meaningful it would be if they could see for themselves the difference they

can make,” she says.

The mother-of-three says that when each of her children turned five, they were given the gift of an “African brother” or “African sister”.

“Even before I became a parent I had heard about programmes where you can sponsor children whose ages match those of your own children as a way to teach them about how other people live.”

So far the family sponsor two children – Patience who is the same age as their daughter Eden (9) and Peter who is the same age as their eldest son Hamish (7).

Ward says that when their youngest son, Nathan, turns five, he too will be gifted a sponsor child of the same age.

Ward says the visit reaffirmed for her how important it was to give back to others.

“The most eye-opening moment for us was seeing Peter’s house. We were led through some crop cultivations, to a mud brick house that was damaged severely

by the recent rains,” Ward says.

“It was just a mud floor, the mud bricks had crumbled and there were huge holes in the wall. It was totally inadequate shelter and this was their home.”

TearFund is currently helping this family to receive a grant to build a new home.

“We realised that our sponsorship commitment, which is a very modest automatic payment that we give very little thought to from year to year, is something the families are profoundly grateful for,” says Kristin.

“It’s offering a genuine pathway out of poverty for these kids.”

Ward says she wants people to realise how great a difference can be made through a small monthly donation.

The evening that had around a 1000 people attend with a lot more disappointed that they couldn’t get tickets to the reunion dinner that acknowledges the contribution made by volunteers, devotees and the community at large.

proposal to establish a new childcare centre for up to 84 children in Beachlands has met with resistance from neighbours.

The applicant Aspin Ridge Limited is looking to build at 27 Shelly Bay Road but its application has been opposed via two submissions.

One of the submissions received was made on behalf of the owners/occupiers of 19 different properties.

The proposal comprises the establishment of an early childhood centre for up to 84 children and 15 staff within a new building on the site. The centre will operate from 7am-6pm Monday-Friday (excluding public holidays).

The proposal includes removal of the existing dwelling and garage on the site and construction of a purpose-built centre, which will comprise two levels, with rooms for children on the ground floor and staff rooms on the upper level. The centre will have a ground floor area of 435m and an outdoor play area of 503m which will be in grass.

Earthworks are proposed across the 915m site cut to achieve a suitable building platform and parking and outdoor play areas.

Retaining walls are proposed along the site boundaries.

Access to the site is proposed directly from

Shelly Bay Road via two one-way vehicle crossings and 14 parking spaces are provided at the front of the site. Five of these are identified as staff carparks and nine for child drop-off.

A new footpath is proposed along the road frontage with a pedestrian connection provided through the carpark. Acoustic fencing and landscaping is also proposed.

A free-standing sign of 2.6m in height and 1m in width is proposed at the front of the site to identify the business. Entry and exit signs are also proposed.

Issues raised in submissions together with the relief sought by the submitters includes visual and amenity effects associated with fencing and effects on the streetscape, noise, traffic effects (vehicle generation, vehicle conflict, kerb side parking), pedestrian/ vehicle conflict, lack of pedestrian access, impact on recycling/refuse collection, street lighting, on-site parking, construction/earthworks effects and effects overall. Both submissions seek refusal of the consent.

A popular tradition, the trolley derby at Omana Regional Park will have trolleys of every size and shape racing downhill.

“There will be a pre-schoolers race too and the little ones are invited to enter the cardboard trolley race,” says Jenny Carter, manager Log Cabin, Beachlands Community Trust.

The fun, family event, from 9am-4pm, has around 50 volunteers and will also have performers from Zirka Circus.

“Critical to newspapers’ ongoing viability, however, will be their ability to swiftly and successfully modernise operations. While online and social media is unlikely to significantly increase revenue, it does help publishers to leverage extended reach and to make print stronger for longer.

“As well, streamlining processes and making efficiencies allows newsrooms to concentrate on what they do best local storytelling and supporting local business.”

NZCNA president Simon Ellis said community newspapers’ ability to generate unique and relevant content would continue to set them apart from other media.

He said publishers were challenged

by how best to integrate newspapers with an online and social presence. But newspapers would remain important to the communities and markets they served.

“For advertisers, community newspapers cut through the media fragmentation and are delivered directly into most homes,” Ellis said.

“This is proven to drive sales for advertisers in a cost effective manner.

No other media offers this local connectivity and connection with buyers and sellers.”

Many media companies chasing digital advertising revenue have found it to be a mirage.

Data shows Facebook and Google are taking most digital advertising revenue - an estimated 54 per cent globally in 2017, according to eMarketer.

Howie said: “Research shows that while digital gets our attention, print is more likely to provide information that is retained, acted upon and converts to a sale. Essentially, print equates to trust and credibility.”

A Private Members Bill by Simeon Brown, National MP for Pakuranga, has been drawn last week which would crack down on the supply of synthetic cannabis.

“The Psychoactive Substances (Increasing Penalty for Supply and Distribution) Amendment Bill would increase the penalty for suppliers from a maximum of two years imprisonment to a maximum of eight years,” Mr Brown says.

“I look forward to introducing this Bill to the House.

Psychoactive substances are having a harmful effect on a number of communities, and the products have become more potent than what was seen before the regulations were put in place.

“This requires strict penalties to deter people from producing and supplying these drugs.”

His Bill will amend the Psychoactive Substances Act to ensure that those who supply illegal psychoactive drugs onto the market face the same type of conviction as they

would if they were supplying a Class C Drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975.

“We are seeing a growing number of illegal products on the market so it is important that suppliers comply with the Act and the testing regimes which have been set up to ensure the approval of these substances,” he says.

“With around 20 reported deaths associated with the consumption of psychoactive substances last year, I expect that this Bill will gain full support across Parliament and I will be talking to each party to ensure that it does.

“This Bill is necessary in order to protect our communities and young people from these harmful drugs, to deter those who are supplying them into the market, and to give Police stronger powers to crack down on suppliers.

“Ensuring that it progresses successfully through Parliament will allow us to better protect our communities and young people from these harmful drugs.”

ew Zealand’s smaller newspaper publishers have started 2018 in a buoyant mood, unfazed by the push to go digital, according to an industry survey.

The poll of publishers, editors and executives found most respondents did not see a negative being print focused - and moving to a multi-platform environment was a low priority.

However, their papers were experiencing revenue pressure. Also, managers wanted helped with strategic direction, sales, reducing costs and streamlining editorial production.

The survey was conducted by Flame Tree Media, which consults to media in Australia and New Zealand, and was distributed by the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association (NZCNA) which Times Newspapers is a member of.

Flame Tree executive director Stuart Howie said the data showed a tale of two countries when it came to newspapers.

“The big players, who hold most of the major newspaper properties in New Zealand, are branching off and aggressively transforming their business models,” Howie said.

But smaller publishers still see a future in serving communities with hyper-local content and advertising and doing it in print.

Almost 80 per cent of respondents to the survey were very or extremely confident about the future of their businesses. The survey also found: • Most did not see it as a priority to move from a print focus to a digital focus, with three-quarters of respondents rating this as a low priority; • Audience engagement and subscrib-

There should be no developments close to the banks of rivers and streams. Trees safeguard against erosion, provide beauty, cooling from their shade and remove carbon dioxide from air.

Elim was an oasis in the Sinai where the Israelites camped during the exodus and had date palms and wells.

There are other schools in Auckland which could also do with some generous greening.

St Kentigern College certainly leads the way here and makes the school most attractive.

enous trees will be planted to replace those lost. Trees are the essence of life, sustain bird life and large trees store carbon. Given the realities of climate change, we should be planting trees and new developments should try to preserve some of the natural vegetation rather than wall to wall clearing such has happened along Thomas Road in Donegal Park.

Coastal flooding impact on future buyers: Crockers T

he Kiwi homebuyers’ penchant for a place by the sea seems to be on the wane.

Crockers’ latest market research says overall weather changes and climate change have had an impact on those who are interested in buying coastal properties.

Just under a half of respondents (41 per cent) remain uninterested in coastal properties and therefore unlikely to invest in coastal properties.

Some 32 per cent claim that climate change has reduced their interest in buying coastal properties, whilst just over a quarter of respondents (27 per cent) are still interested in investing coastal properties despite recent flooding and global warming.

Large investors were more likely to have never been interested in coastal properties than small investors, whilst small investors were more likely to have a reduced interest in coastal properties following the flooding.

Coastal flooding property impact This month in Crockers’ latest CPII survey in association with IPSOS, some questions were asked about the impact to coastal flooding in early January and what impact this had on respond-

ents’ residential properties.

As well as this, a question was asked on respondents’ overall attitudes to investing in low-lying coastal properties, given the recent flooding and the influence of global warming on rising tidal levels.

Overall, 55 per cent of the respondents were not impacted by the recent floods, 44 per cent did not own any coastal properties and 1 per cent of respondents were affected by the floods.

2017 Review: Sales & Rentals in Main Metros In 2017, median sales prices saw a steady increase at the start of the year, but then stabilised as the year went on.

Auckland posted a slight increase in median sale price, while Wellington posted the highest proportional growth in 2017, with median sales prices increasing from $460k in January to $565k in December.

The growth in Wellington was experienced by large fluctuations between most months.

Dunedin’s median sale price also increased by $80k. In contrast, Christchurch experienced a steady decline in median sales price, perhaps due to additional stock coming onto the market.

Rental prices had mixed movements in 2017.

Two-bedroom rental prices in Auckland rose 15 points between January and December 2017, while the 3-bedroom rental price had a more substantial increase of 21 points.

Rental prices in Wellington rose 43 points for 2-bedroom properties over 2017 – the largest increase last year, perhaps due to the increasing trend of people moving out of Auckland and into other parts of New Zealand.

Dunedin 2-bedroom rental prices increased slightly over 2017 (2 points), while 3-bedroom property prices have remained the same ($375).

Christchurch has experienced decreases over the past year.

Both 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom rentals dropping by 8 points.

Last year the average selling price in New Zealand increased 33 per cent ($132k) since 2013.

These increases were driven by shifts in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

Wellington also saw a large growth in sales price, up 32 per cent (128k) on 2013.

Dunedin has experienced growth of 35 per cent ($94k) since 2013, steadily increasing since 2014. ➤➤Continued to page 13

➤➤From page 12 Christchurch sales price growth remained stable in 2017 at 1 per cent ($3k) since last year, stabilising after strong growth prior to 2015 during the earthquake rebuild. Since 2013 the city has seen a 21 per cent (82k) rise in selling prices.

Rental prices have followed a similar pattern since 2013 – this is shown by the Christchurch curves, which have shown relatively similar trends in response to the rebuild.

Auckland rental prices have increased by 22 per cent ($86) for 2-bedroom and 20 per cent ($101) for 3-bedroom dwellings since 2013; this follows a period of strong growth in prices in 2015 and 2016.

Wellington rental prices have increased substantially over the past four years. Since 2013, 2-bedroom dwellings have shown an increase of 23 per cent ($73) and 3-bedroom dwellings have shown an increase of 17 per cent ($72).

Dunedin has also experienced small increases in the past four years – 14 per cent for 2-bedroom dwellings and 12.5 per cent for 3-bedroom dwellings.

Since 2013, Christchurch rental prices have experienced fluctuations– 2-bedroom dwellings decreased by 4 per cent ($14) and 3-bedroom dwellings were down 7 per cent ($29).

An estimation of the rental return (yearly rental income divided by house price) indicates that returns across Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin have weakened slightly in the past year.

Auckland’s estimated average rental return has stabilised – likely due to the fact that median sale prices in Auckland have started to stabilise – as rental prices continue to increase.

For example, if someone bought in Auckland at the median price of $839k and rented it out for all 52 weeks of the year at $548 per week (we have averaged the median 3-bed and 2-bed rents to get $548), they would bring in 3.4 per cent of their original investment (before expenses). In 2013, they would have enjoyed a 4.2 per cent return.

The drop in other parts of New Zealand indicates that median house prices are rising, whilst rents are not keeping up with this increase.

Hunger for Colour assists those struggling Paint company Resene and generous New Zealanders will be brightening the homes and lives of thousands this month.

The Resene Hunger for Colour fundraiser is back, for its third year helping struggling New Zealanders put food on the table and bring colour to Kiwi homes.

The initiative, which runs from 1-28 February, invites people to head to one of 65 Resene ColorShops around the country and swap cans of food for 60-80ml test pots of Resene paint. The cans are then donated to their local Salvation Army food bank.

Over the last three years, Kiwis swapped over 110,000 cans of food for paint, with community groups such as Palmy Rocks driving a huge rise in donations last year.

“The campaign has generated fantastic feedback for three years running. People like donating food knowing it was going directly to help someone in need and the test pots are a popular, versatile product which encourages people to come in,” she says.

“The response in some communities last year was incredible. More than 3000 cans were donated at Resene’s Palmerston North ColorShop alone, with other stores close behind.

“The stores love it, customers love it and we love it.”

Regions still lively, major centres cool off Real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that while the major centres in New Zealand continue to cool, there’s lively activity across regional New Zealand.

Asking prices either fell, or remained stable in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Waikato and Otago compared to the prior month.

“Total housing stock was up

in these five main regions compared to the same time a year ago, indicating that many properties are not selling as quickly,” a spokesman said.

By contrast Northland, Central North Island, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Marlborough were a hive of activity in January, says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor.

“It’s interesting that most of these regions are known holiday destinations, and it could well be that sellers in these locations are taking advantage of the visitor season and a sellers’ market.”

Asking prices were up and total stock numbers were down in all these regions, she says.

I have been teaching my six-yearold son to bake and that was a really memorable experience as he was so proud of the results. There is heaps of room too for rolling out traditional dumplings,” Yukie adds.

“The original layout was not making full use of the space.

The POAC centralised coordination centre is based in Botany, Auckland and we are looking for a Care Coordinator with clinical experience to join our vibrant and enthusiastic team.

The role will involve utilising your clinical experience to provide advice and service coordination, supporting general practice, regional Auckland hospitals, hospices and other community health professionals.

The service is fast paced and will require someone with excellent time management skills and plenty of initiative.

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure, have excellent problem solving and readily embrace change.

You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to project yourself clearly and professionally in a positive manner.

Qualifications/Experience: Registered or Enrolled Nurse with New Zealand experience. Current practicing certificate is not a requirement.

Hours: This is a full time position (Mon-Fri, 8.30am – 5.00pm) and is based at East Health Trust Primary Health Organisation in Botany.

akuranga College director of Sport Clive Daniels and coach Josiah Maama headed off to Los Angeles recently with 13 premier basketball players from the College.

They played a total of five matches against US school teams, four in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco.

The experience of playing basketball in the US against local US school teams was the highlight of the boys’ playing careers.

The team were fortunate to also watch three NCAA matches at Staples Centre in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.

They followed this with an NBA match between the LA Clippers and the Washington Wizards which went down to the wire with

The Pakuranga College students were also able to do some sightseeing, including a trip to Universal Studios Theme Park and Alcatraz Island.

This was the college’s first venture to the US and one of the objectives was to give the young men the opportunity to experience the sport they love and to be immersed in the American culture that is basketball.

It gave the College staff and students alike, the opportunity to build connections and contacts for future ventures. The players were also able to develop their skills by playing against some talented and competitive teams.

Sevens magic wows fans hen it comes to World Series sevens magic, Fiji and South Africa provide the skills and thrills that leave opponents grasping thin air and spellbound crowds gasping in wonderment.

That was the way it was when Hamilton successfully hosted their first World Series sevens and Fiji emerged sensational 24-17 winners after trailing the speedy South Africans 17-5 at halftime.

South Africa have serious talent in the form of the sensational Cecil Afrika, Seabelo Senatla and Kwagga Smith, the latter starring for the Barbarians against the All Blacks at Twickenham late last year. But they had no answer to combat the big, strong-running Fijians’ amazing offloads.

For me, the standard of that final compensated for the disappointment of seeing the All Blacks sevens pipped at the posts for third by Aussie skipper James Stannard’s drop goal penalty.

I also confess to my failure to accept this is an All Blacks sevens when not one member of the squad is capable of making the All Blacks 15 starters and eight reserves team.

Four make NZSS netball squad Four local girls have been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools squad for 2018.

Three of those named hail from Howick College, the national secondary school champs. Another colleague has been named as a reserve.

Netball New Zealand today named a 23-strong squad following the National Development Camp in Cambridge last week, which includes two ANZ Premiership players.

Leehava Saverio, Nanise Waqairo and Teuila Sotutu from Howick College have made the squad with as has Tayla Earle from St Kentigern College. Howick College’s Iva Livani has been named a reserve.

Howick College’s meteoric rise at the New Zealand Secondary School Champs ended in October last year with their first national crown. In what was their first appearance at the national netball event, the school beat Saint Kentigern 33-25 in an exciting grand final.

Meanwhile, NZU21 World Champion Tiana Metuarau and defender Renee Savai’inaea, who will make her ANZ Premiership debut this season, are still eligible for the

New Zealand Secondary Schools squad for 2018 and have been named in the group.

NZSS coach Mary-Jane Araroa said a final team would be named after the NZ Age Group Championships in July in the build-up to matches against the Australian Under-17 squad in Canberra in September.

“We are excited with what we have seen at the National Development Camp and opted to name a squad at this time to enable us to monitor and track these athletes over the next six months” she said.

Araroa said the National Camp provided the panel the opportunity to assess athletes from all over the country.

“Players were selected from all the national age group competitions, regional Secondary School tournaments and last year’s NZ Secondary Schools tournament which gave us the chance to observe a large number of athletes in one place.”

Not all players were able to attend the camp so the selectors reserve the right to consider athletes from outside this squad in the final selection process. ➤ Continued on page 19

eachlands’ Ryan Fox has recorded his best finish on the European Tour with a thirdequal placing at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia.

Fox’s final round 66 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club was highlighted by an eagle at his opening hole and three birdies in his last four holes and saw him finish three shots behind the winner Shubhankar Sharma of India, iseekgolf.com reported.

Fox told the Times he was very happy with the week.

“It’s nice to be in contention on Sunday and finish with my best result so far on the European tour,” he said.

On Saturday, Fox moved into a tie for the lead after sinking a 213yard six-iron for a two on the parfive .

“The albatross was pretty special.

They are much rarer than holes in one so very cool to have one in a tournament.”

Fox’s previous best finish in Europe was a fourth placing at both the Scottish and Irish Opens last year.
