Bo is keen to work closely with local retailers to promote their businesses whilst tapping into the tourism market.

A small membership fee for businesses to be part of the website, social media promotions and ATEED workshops to understand the tourism market—will be charged.

“We are currently funded by the Howick Local Board to get us up and running after which we will work toward our business plan to sustain ourselves, partially at least.”

Right now, the East Auckland Tourism website is being updated to be a one-stop shop highlighting tourist attractions.

The website will be launched mid-March with great fanfare.

Asbestos contaminated dwelling in Howick to be converted to daycare There are concerns over plans to turn a Howick residence contaminated with asbestos into an early childhood education centre.

A neighbour, Liz, is against the daycare centre being built on the busy Howick Street and says it will increase congestion and noise in the area.

She says residents were not informed of the development plans and were not given the opportunity to object.

Discovering the asbestos contamination has only heightened her concerns for the building of an early childhood education centre at the Moore Street property in Howick, Liz says.

“I had to do my own investigating to find out that the new owner planned to pull the house down and build a day care centre.

“Renovations started before I had a chance to object,” she says.

“Now, not only am I unhappy with living next door to a busy day care centre, but I don’t think turning an asbestos-ridden property into a daycare is the right thing to do.”

Liz says she first became suspicious of the development when the owner of the property wouldn’t tell her why the house was being demolished.

“He repeatedly told me he was not the owner of the property which of course was a lie.”

Liz contacted council herself to find out the plans for developing the property.

was told that the development was deemed “not notified” because it was not believed to have any adverse effects on the residents or environment.

Liz says it was white powder coming from the demolition site that raised alarm bells for asbestos.

“I contacted [WorkSafe NZ] and, sure enough, after an inspection, the house was found to be contaminated,” she says.

Liz says the whole process for developing the day care has been unacceptable and she thinks Moore Street residents should have been kept in the loop.

She now fears she may have been breathing in asbestos for weeks before the contamination was confirmed.

Steve Pearce, Auckland Council manager regulatory compli-

ance says the property owner was found to have followed correct procedure related to asbestos contamination.

“An Auckland Council Compliance Officer has inspected the site and found the owner of the property and contractors have followed all the correct protocols, had the property surveyed by approved asbestos testing service and identified areas for removal.”

Pearce says it is common for asbestos to be concealed behind gib or other structures and surfaces and is often not identified until renovations commence.

Notifying neighbours is determined on a case-by-case basis, Pearce says, which in this case was through signage posted outside the contaminated property.

Anna Wallace, Auckland Council manager of premium resource consents says the application for a building consent for the Moore Street site is still being processed.

“Establish ECE Ltd has had a resource consent approved to develop the existing dwelling at 105 Moore St, Howick, into an early childhood centre,” she says.

Wallace says several neighbours have provided feedback on the resource consent application which will be considered by the Duty Commissioner when making the decision.

A decision has not been made on the application, she says.

Affected parties can apply to the High Court for a judicial review of a resource consent decision.

Taking help to all corners of world At a special Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony on the weekend, volunteers and guests reflected on the relief work that the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation has done in around 19 countries when natural disasters strike ■■By Farida Master

T

here have been times when they have reached a disaster zone before emergency services arrive.

The Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation New Zealand, located at East Tamaki, is known to help victims of natural disasters with food, supplies, much-needed money packets and most of all with love and compassion.

When the earth parts and swallows everything leaving people surrounded by death and destruction or cities are washed away or towns burnt to ashes, volunteers of the Tzu Chi Foundation all over the world rush to help and support the victims no matter which corner of the world they are located in.

There was not a single dry eye in the house while people watched films that documented the work the foun-

dation does. Stories of human spirit, regardless of race, religion or country, touched everyone’s heart.

The blessing ceremony stressed how important it is to “respect, love and protect mother earth” and that each and every person has the capacity to help make a difference.

Auckland Councillor Sharon Stewart, who has worked closely with the foundation, said the responsibility rests on each one of us to protect our environment and not just rely on Auckland Council.

The blessing ceremony also had a distressed tourist couple who spoke about how grateful they are for all the support they got from the foundation when their son developed a sudden ailment on their visit to Waitomo Caves and couldn’t breathe. And while their son is still hospitalised, they promised to become volunteers of the organisation that has helped them at the worst time of their lives.

More recently, the minute Patricia Duke a volunteer at the Tzu Chi Foundation heard about a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Taiwan on February 6. She called her family and asked them to donate $100,000 toward relief work.

“I was heading home for Chinese New Year but when I heard of the earthquake. I called my parents and asked them to donate some money.

How else can we help those who have lost everything,” she told the Times.

“Five buildings collapsed and 14 died with around 400 people injured. The charity has a hospital and doctors and nurses working to help those injured by natural disasters,” she said.

Safeswim warning Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach and Cockle Bay were among dozens of Auckland Beaches that were off limits this week due to poor water quality and wastewater overflow following torrential downpours. The wastewater overflow was detected by sensors according to an alert system on Auckland Council’s Safeswim website and swimmers were advised to stay out of the water. According to the Safeswim website, the water quality should be back to normal by today.

I

n a unique move, the Asian Council of Reducing Crime has come up with an idea of people approaching the police without an element of fear.

Over a session of two hours from 12 noon to 2pm, a police officer will be available to meet up with any member of the community at Highland Park Library where they can have a one-on-one with a police officer for a maximum of 15 minutes.

“It’s doesn’t always have to be the cops that come to you when something bad happens; but you can also go to the cops for a friendly chat,” says Rosa Chow, chairperson of the Asian Council on Reducing Crime in an attempt to break barriers.

“No Chinese person likes to go to the police station in their lifetime,” she says.

Starting from February 8, a trial run will be held with a Chinesespeaking police officer who will be available to meet around eight people in a span of two hours at the local library.

“The police can provide an alternative information resource on crime prevention for the community in a relaxing atmosphere over a cup of Chinese tea.

“A member of the Asian Council on Reducing Crime will be around to assist, and a library staff will be available to support the process. But this is not to be mistaken as a platform to reporting crime,” she cautions.

The Asian Council on Reducing Crime is constantly working on ideas on reducing crime and hopes that this fosters a healthy relationship between the police and the Asian community.

Three years ago I doubt a medicinal cannabis bill would have been able to be passed through the Parliament. Yet earlier this month the Parliament passed such a law unanimously through its first reading.

Two different bills have just been debated. The first was introduced by the government and builds on the work done to widen access to medical cannabis for the terminally ill. It did this by providing a legal defence for the use of cannabis to those with a terminal illness.

The other bill was a “grow your own” bill from the Green Party that was very flawed, and was rejected.

The previous government made some big steps in this area, such as providing lists of cannabis-based medical products that could be prescribed and would likely get Ministry of Health approval to

doctors. But, given a limited market, there are still issues around cost and access to these medical products.

That means that it is still difficult for people who are suffering from a terminal illness to access products that have been shown to have the capability to ease suffering in certain cases.

The question, then, is how do we best work within this system to provide a compassionate and evidence based avenue for treating these patients?

In these limited cases, it is not only compassionate but also reasonable to recognise that the limited use of cannabis may ease these patients’ suffering and they should not be considered to be breaking the law if a doctor signs off on the use of cannabis.

a way to legalise cannabis by stealth though. This is what the second Bill from the Green Party attempted to do. The Bill would have allowed people diagnosed with “migraines” as well as other conditions, to gain access to a waiver to grow and use their own cannabis.

This Greens bill was a step too far when we are considering how we should regulate a medical product. Their proposal failed to get a majority in the Parliament with National, New Zealand First and some Labour MPs opposing it.

We have come a long way as a country when our Parliament came together to unanimously vote for a Bill to improve access to medical cannabis for the terminally ill.

Ready, set, go...TRYathlon time Hundreds of local school children will swim, cycle and run their way to the finish line as part of the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

The kids’TRYathlon is designed for Kiwi kids aged 7-15 years to help them stay active and healthy through a programme of participation

The popular kids’ event is being held at Pt England Reserve on February 18 with the TRYathlon starting at 9am.

Participants will swim, cycle and run their way to the finish line to receive a medal.

The increase in children aged 7-15 enrolling for the iconic sporting event continues the

trend for the TRYathlon’s growing popularity: the very first event, in 1992, saw just 800 entrants; while numbers for the 2016/17 TRYathlon series were close to 30,000.

Swapping suits for sneakers I

t’s time to dig out your running gear and swap your dress shoes for sneakers because the Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run and Walk is back.

Last year, more than 450 people hit the pavement for the annual event which is organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club.

open to everyone with entries just $20 per person. All proceeds from the event are donated to charities, with the majority of funds going towards an Audio Star hearing testing machine for Middlemore Hospital.

Last year’s event raised a whopping $22,000 through participants and sponsors, with a range of charities benefiting.

Held straight after work, the Fun Run and Walk is a great alternative to those standard after-work drinks – in fact, why not do both? After the exercise is done, hang around and recover with your team over a couple of drinks and a BBQ while enjoying the live entertainment on offer.

Flat Bush property developer at the centre of a mortgage fraud scheme involving about 75 properties in Hamilton and Auckland has been sentenced to four years and seven months in prison with a minimum nonparole period of two years and three months for charges brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Kang (Thomas) Huang, also known as Gang Wang, was sentenced today in the High Court at Auckland. Mr Huang pleaded guilty to all 10 charges he faced on December 21, 2017, which were eight charges of ‘Obtaining by Deception’, one charge of ‘Corruptly Giving Consideration to an Agent’, and one charge of ‘Dishonest Use of a Document’.

Mr Huang, whose residential address is in Ormiston Road according to the NZ Companies Office, operated a property development business and was charged with providing false documents or information to several banks across multiple home loan applications. He was also charged with bribing a bank employee.

The large tractor was last seen mowing the lawns at the reserve before its back end became stuck in a ditch that had flooded with water.

Cricketing great Congdon dies B

evan Congdon, one of the finest all-round cricketers ever produced by New Zealand, has died aged 79.

A death notice says Congdon passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved girls on February 10 at Howick Baptist Hospital.

ESPN CricInfo’s Martin Williamson writes that Congdon was a technically correct batsman with tremendous powers of concentration - as evidenced by his backto-back big hundreds against England in 1973 - but was also able to play in a cavalier manner when the occasion demanded.

“He supplemented this with sound fielding and medium-pace in and outswingers.” says Williamson.

“He led New Zealand with distinction to their first Test win over Australia (after putting Australia in), and but for dropped catches, would probably have recorded a momentus win over England at Lord’s in 1973.

“Unlike many, he thrived on the captaincy and his batting seemed the better for the responsibility.”

Congdon played 61 Tests in a 13-year career, scoring 3448 runs at an average of 32.22 with seven centuries. He also took 59 wickets. Congdon played in 11 one-day internationals, including

New Zealand’s first in the format in 1973 against Pakistan. His average of 56.33 in ODIs is still the best for a New Zealand batsman with a minimum of 10 innings.

He is survived by his wife Shirley and is father and father-in-law of Ali and John, and Sandy and Steve and grandfather to Matthew, Joshua, Lilly and Reeves.

“Loved son of the late Cecil and Muriel Congdon. Brother to Fred, Les, Reg and Ken (all deceased) and brother to Neil,” the death

notice says.

“Special thanks to the staff of the Howick Baptist Hospital for their loving and tender care of Bevan over the last 12 months.”

A service for Bevan will be held at St Columba Presbyterian Church, 480 Ti Rakau Drive, Botany, Auckland on Friday February 16 at 1.30pm.

Show celebrates two decades of new Beetle

on Noble knows almost every Volksvagen ‘new Beetle’ in the Howick area.

As he starts firing off a few of the number plates of Beetle’s that regularly grace the roads of east Auckland, there is no doubt he is an unwavering fan of the new Beetle.

Replacing an icon isn’t easy, but the new Beetle design did exactly that when it was introduced in 1998 to huge fanfare.

It was a bold move that kicked off a retro-niche in the car market and now, 20 years on, is paving the way to the new Beetle design becoming a bona-fide classic.

Physically reminiscent of the beloved original VW Beetle, designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s, the new Beetle’s retro-theme captured the hearts of many. The new design sports a more distinctive rounded shape and is cherished for its unique design and interesting colours.

The sloping headlamps and large round tail lights, and a high rounded roofline are what they love most about the new Beetle design. “They’re also nippy little cars, easy and fun to drive with plenty of oomph,” Don adds.

“I think they are well on their way to becoming a classic,” says Jane. “But only time will tell.”

This year the Brit and Euro Car show is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the new Beetle design. Chair of the car show

Fancy an ocean cruise? Then climb aboard for Howick Little Theatre’s first production of the year, Cruise Control.

Written by David Walliamson and directed by Nathan Hey, Cruise Control follows three bickering couples as they board a cruise ship travelling from London to New York for seven days of marital healing.

They board with the hope of escaping their reality, but instead find themselves trapped in the hellish world of designated dinner seating and B-grade cabaret.

Hey says the play has moments of both drama and comedy, helped along by an amazing cast including some new blood to the theatre.

“There’s so many elements in there – it’s drama, madness and lots of humour with great actors.”

He speaks of the unusual set design, which poses a challenge for both acting and directing.

“It’s a challenging and exciting set, one that we don’t really use all that often at Howick Little Theatre with a 270 degree sightline. It’s been an awesome experience.”

Hey has directed twice at Howick Little Theatre before, as well as short film, and says audiences can expect a “very highly executed play”.

“I pride myself on having a slick and well-rehearsed show.

“They [audiences] can expect to be entertained [and] to have a laugh.

“It’s a great cast with a passion for acting [who] have been working very, very hard,” he says.

“I wouldn’t have chosen it to direct if I didn’t believe it was really good.” ➤➤Cruise Control is on at Howick Little Theatre from February 24 – March 17.

Housing crisis paints ‘devastating impacts’ An independent stocktake of New Zealand’s housing sector has found the housing crisis the country faces is deeper and more entrenched than previously revealed.

Commissioned by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford and released on Monday, A Stocktake of New Zealand’s Housing assesses the entire housing continuum from homeownership and market renting, to state housing and homelessness, and the social cost of sub-standard housing.

“It paints a sobering picture of the devastating impacts of the housing crisis, particularly on children,” said Twyford. “Homelessness, transience and substandard housing have had a lasting, and sometimes even deadly effect on our youngest.”

He said the stocktake highlights the increasing number of elderly facing housing-related poverty because “fewer and fewer” are mortgage-free and able to survive on Superannuation alone.

“Most concerning is the hidden homeless – those who feel they can’t seek government housing support for their families – for which there are no

official estimates,” Twyford said.

“The stocktake suggests there could be significant numbers of ‘floating homeless’ which will lead to a growing homeless rate as more people seek help.”

The stocktake warned New Zealand is “quickly becoming a society divided by the ownership of housing and its related wealth” and found “recent housing and tax policy settings appear to have exacerbated this division”.

“The Government is committed to addressing this inequality. Fixing the housing crisis will take bold action.

The Government has a significant work programme to respond to these failures; implementing KiwiBuild, improving conditions for renters, increasing the supply of public housing, and rebalancing tax settings to discourage speculation,” Twyford said.

The stocktake’s authors were Alan Johnson of the Salvation Army, Otago Public Health Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman and economist Shamubeel Eaqub.

“Their work is an important building block that will help the Government make policy decisions.”

he Pakuranga and Howick Realty owner claimed 13 medals at the recent Oceania Masters Athletics Championships in Dun-

edin.

He competed in more events than anyone else at the championships and broke multiple New Zealand records with ease.

The competition was his biggest medal haul to date and included 12 gold medals with one silver.

Johnson started track and field at age 65 and particularly enjoys the decathlon and pentathlon events but says he’s not particularly exceptional at any one event these days – rather he’s consistent across the board.

“I just try everything, I try every event. I’ll do every event from the 100m to the 10km. There’s not one thing I won’t try. I’ll do everything. I believe you don’t know what you can do until you try.”

annemora local Andre Heimgartner will carry the championship lead into the final round of the BNT V8s Championship in March following the weekend’s penultimate round of the series.

The Circuit Chris Amon round at Manfeild was held over 9-11 February and saw the 22-year-old Nissan Motorsport Supercar driver take out first, third and fifth in tricky conditions to secure second for the round and maintain his title lead.

“Overall it was not a bad weekend, we showed lots of speed which was really positive and to be leading the championship ahead of the final round is something we are very happy about,” Heimgartner said.

“The weather really played a part in the weekend’s proceedings.

Practice went to plan for us, but we went into qualifying not having had any dry laps and we came away second fastest.

“In the first race we started on the outside and fell in behind Nick Ross going into turn one before managing to get past him going into turn three on the second lap.

From there we were able to control the race and take the win, while extending our championship buffer.“ Race two was a bit of a struggle as our tyres were not quite as good as those of everyone else, but we made the best of what we had. We

issues with the car so I had to make a trip to pit lane to check that all was okay, which saw us bring the car home in fifth.

“It is never fun being taken out while leading a race, but at the end of the day we had a good weekend and most importantly, we left Manfeild leading the points tally ahead of the final round at Hampton Downs next month (9-11 March).”

Before he gets to Hampton Downs, Heimgartner has some other exciting racing exploits on his plate – namely, his first Supercars round as a driver with Nissan Motorsport.

“I have my first test with Nissan Motorsport coming up this Friday, and I am really excited to get in the car and turn some laps ahead of the Adelaide 500 (March 1-4),” Heimgartner said.

A local Special Olympics athlete is preparing to take on a new challenge, as part of a group of athletes set to become ambassadors for Special Olympics New Zealand, known as Global Messengers.

Pakuranga’s Monique Irvine, who competes with Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga is one of six athletes who will take part in the Global Messenger training programme this year. The goal of the programme is to equip athletes with the skills to take up the role of ambassador for the organisation within their communities around the country.

Following the training Monique will join a group of more than 70 Global Messengers who promote Special Olympics in New Zealand and support and inspire other athletes.

Monique says being named a Global Messenger is a dream come true. She is looking forward to encouraging other people to be a part of the Special Olympics family, to try out different sports and make heaps of new friends. “I want to encourage them to get fit and healthy,” Monique says. “Special Olympics has a sport for every ability or interest. It helps us to become independent.”

Monique (29) was first introduced to Special Olympics at the age of six.

More than 20 years later the swimmer has been to four National Summer Games events, and represented New Zealand at the World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015, where

she won a silver medal in backstroke.

In both 2015 and 2016 Monique was named Disabled Athlete of the Year at the Howick-Pakuranga Sports Awards.

“I love sports and Special Olympics gives me the opportunity to compete at my level and even win medals,” Monique says.

“I have made so many new friends from around the world, had lots of new experiences and have had the chance to travel in New Zealand and overseas.”

When she’s not training and travelling with Special Olympics, Monique is kept busy with her part-time job at McDonalds and her volunteer work at Pakuranga Heights Primary School.

She also enjoys taking long walks, doing puzzles, gardening and fishing.

“Being selected to become a Global Messenger is a huge achievement and an amazing opportunity for these athletes,” said Julia Sanson, regional team leader for Special Olympics New Zealand. “Not only will they learn new and valuable leadership skills that will help them in their lives and careers, but they will also become the face of Special Olympics in their communities.

The Class of 2018 started their leadership training yesterday in Wellington. Special Olympics New Zealand partners with The Training Practice and Attitude Pictures to deliver the four-workshop programme, with workshops also taking place in May, August and October.

ead Blues coach Tana Umaga was delighted with the contribution of his young players, and how the experienced players stood up in claiming the Brisbane Global Tens title.

The Blues came from behind with two tries in the final three minutes to grab a 10-7 win over the Hurricanes on a wet second day of the tournament.

The Blues trailed 7-0 until All Blacks Akira Ioane and George Moala made their mark. Ioane scored to close the gap before Moala produced a solo effort to force his way over with time up on the clock.

It is the second major Tens tournament that the club has won, after claiming the World Club Tens in Singapore in 2014.

Blues teenager Caleb Clarke was named player of the tournament and was top try scorer with five over the two days.

FUTSAL

Big wins at futsal tournament New Zealand performed strongly at Australia’s largest futsal tournament recently. Around 120 teams from Oceania and Asia gathered to compete in the Craig Foster International Cup in the Gold Coast last month.

St Kentigern College student Arzan Todywalla captained the East City U19 Boys side to victory against Galaxy FC, winning 2-1, however he was forced to do it from the sidelines after a serious injury forced him out of playing.

Despite not being able to play with his foot

in a moonboot, Todywalla insisted on remaining with the team and supporting them from the sidelines.

He also opted to join the U16 team and support them in their training session – a move which impressed coaches Bakr Al-Saudi and Declan Peach who offered him a role as assistant coach to the U16.

East City won two gold cups in the tournament, the other by the U16 Boys side against Brisbane Elite, 6-4.

Papalii featured prominently in the competition.

Umaga was especially pleased with the efforts of a number of players who have been replacements at the club, covering early season for the All Blacks and also injuries.

“Some guys have been with us for two months, some two weeks, but they showed some real resilience to combine together.

“The result is great, but some of the off-field stuff, and learning to follow through and win those critical moments was really pleasing for us this weekend.”

The coach was also pleased with the contribution of former Blues great, Carlos Spencer who was the wildcard player in Brisbane.

“Just having him around was great for our guys. He’s somebody who is revered in our club, so just that and some of the little bits he’s been passing onto our guys at training and he’s carrying back, and doing that kind of

job.

“He always seems to have a knack of winning whenever he’s involved, so I’m sure the boys have taken something from him.”

The Blues now quickly turn their attention back to Super Rugby and the final preseason match against the Hurricanes at the Mahurangi Rugby Club, Warkworth A&P Showgrounds today with kick off at 4pm.

“The win is good for this group. Now we take those learnings and get back to business for this week which is our last hit out before the Super Rugby season gets underway.”
