E

xperienced theatre and screen director Mary Gray has gathered a talented cast for this delightful set of four playlets, all set in a ‘California Suite’ in Los Angeles.

From lights up, the set and decor by designers Pat Hudson, Anna Baird, Laurie Mills reveals a very believable 1970s hotel suite with bedroom and living divided by an imaginary wall. Bob Gray’s lighting is subtle and effective throughout the different scenes. All four ‘sets’ of visitors to this hotel suite present a distinct contrast, with excellent comic timing, bringing Neil Simon’s witty and often ascerbic lines to life. It’s hard to pinpoint any one actor as more outstanding. The opening pair (played by Fiona Hall and David Steadman), are a divorced couple meeting to discuss their teenage daughter’s

future. It’s a slick and funny performance with well-timed banter and a few unexpectedly tender moments. The Philadelphia husband, played almost manically by AJ Johnson, evokes a huge audience reaction in his panic at finding a hooker in his bed minutes before his wife (Bess Brookes) is due and keeping up the pace and slapstick when she arrives. Anne Kendall as the comatose body in the bed is brilliant. In the contrasting English couple’s story, Tracey Holdsworth gives a stellar performance as the thwarted Oscar nominee, dreading the ceremony, and coping with the aftermath and her sweet ‘token’ husband, played sensitively by Tim Skinner. Finally, there’s an almost farcical chaotic scene, with two couples coping with injuries and over-exposure to one another on a holiday fraught with arguments. Overall, this is a highly entertaining evening. HOWICK LITTLE THEATRE, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga

Bird rescue

Ducks ‘dying like flies’ ■■By Farida Master Kym Skelton recently pulled out three duck carcasses in different stages of decomposition from the Logan Carr Reserve in Botany. The Whitford resident, who moved from Tauranga a couple of months ago, is a part of the Bird Rescue group and says she has been inundated with calls about ducks being paralysed. “They are dying like flies all over Auckland,” says Kym on the outbreak of avian botulism killing wild ducks in their natural habitats. The mother-of-two wants more people aware of a severe case of duck botulism caused by bacteria which secretes toxin that causes ducks and other birds to become severely paralysed and either starve to death or drown when their heads go limp. It spreads via ducks and other birds ingesting the maggots on the dead carcasses of other infected birds. “It is also caused by people

feeding bread to the ducks. When the bread reaches the bottom of the water body, it decomposes and creates bacteria. More so, when it is a warm period and there is no fresh water.” The 32-year-old says they are short of volunteers who would visit parks daily and collect any sick or paralysed ducks to be taken to bird rescue in Green Bay. “Sometimes it is a challenge to catch these ducks as some of them go limp in the middle of the swamp. You have to think of strategies of how to pull them out and sometimes use a kayak or a dingy.” Time is critical as the ducks die within roughly 24 hours from the onset of botulism and every dead duck results in many more being paralysed. Carefully handling a Peking duck that sits still in a bird cage at her home, she removes the gunk in the eyes with a wet tea bag. She then uses a syringe and a pipe to inject electrolytes into the duck’s

throat, making sure that the pipe reaches the stomach. She then gently immerses the Peking duck in a tub filled with water, to help the sick duck cool off. She worries as a pool of lice surfaces in the water. “I was called by a lady who has Peking ducks in a private pond saying that she has already lost six to seven ducks and doesn’t know what is happening to them,” says the bird rescuer who works with volunteers in Howick. Kym is glad that she has been successful in rehabilitating a mallard and a grey duck that are doing well in the shed in her backyard. She says duck botulism is not contagious to humans and can be reversed, in early cases. “All dead carcasses need to be put in a plastic bag, tied tight and left next to a rubbish bin so that it stops transmission of bacteria. “Please keep all dogs away from it since pets can be poisoned by ingesting the toxins,” she says.

Leaky buildings at Botany Downs Secondary College will be repaired, with a Government investment of $20 million, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced this week. Hipkins made the announcement at the College on Tuesday. The money will pay to fix weathertightness problems across the school campus. “Students learn best in in high-quality classrooms. This investment will ensure students of Botany Downs can study in warm, dry teaching spaces, as they fully deserve to,” Hipkins said. The project will repair weathertighness issues, undertaking re-roofing and cladding work on buildings that contain 70 of the 84 teaching spaces at the decile 9 school of more than 1800 students. Temporary teaching spaces will be provided to ensure student learning is not disrupted during the project. Planning for the project is already underway and work will be staged over several years to minimise disruption to the school. “Today’s announcement is the first of a series of investments this Government is making this year in our schools,” said Hipkins. “As well as investing in new schools for a growing student population, we know that many existing buildings not affected by weathertightness at schools around the country have been neglected or barely patched up in recent years. That is not fair on the students or teachers and needs to change.”

OPINION

Botany needs better transport to Airport I

believe the time is fast approaching to turn Te Irirangi Drive into a proper public transport link. Such a move would reduce congestion and make it easier for local commuters to get to and from their destinations. As the MP for Botany I’m glad the Government has agreed to working with me toward building a public transport link from Auckland Airport to Botany as part of its wider transport strategy. Getting a busway running along Te Irirangi Drive is an important issue for the Botany electorate. It’s something I intend to focus on, along with establishing more public transport options for our community. I recently raised the subject of public transport links between Auckland Airport and Botany during question time in Parliament. In response to a question I asked, Transport Minister Phil Twyford said work is under way to look at the possibility of extending a rapid transit service that would connect Auckland Airport with Manukau, Puhinui, and up through Flat Bush to Botany. He said he hopes that’s something the Government will get up and running in the coming years and he will work with me to progress these plans. As the populations of Botany and Flat Bush continue to expand in the future, it is vital the necessary transport infrastructure is created to accommodate commuters.

So many local motorists will be sick of staring at the brake lights of the cars in front of them each day while they drive to and from work or their children’s schools. I’m keen to work with the Government to address this problem locally and transform Te Irirangi Drive so it can become an efficient arterial link between east and south Auckland. Creating a much-needed busway along Te Irirangi Drive would encourage more people to get out of their cars and onto public transport, freeing up the roads and making life easier for frustrated commuters. Auckland transport (AT) spokesperson Ben Levesque says AT is currently working on the Airport to Botany Rapid Transit project, which is part of the wider Southwest Gateway programme, in collaboration with the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Airport. The first stage of Airport to Botany Rapid Transit involves the upgrade of the Puhinui Station to an interchange that connects rail services with new, fast, frequent bus services to the Airport and Manukau – this is expected to be completed by early 2021. The second stage of Airport to Botany Rapid Transit is to create a new Rapid Transit Network (RTN) route from Botany to the airport,

With Jami-Lee Ross

Jami-Lee’s JOTTINGS

As an Independent MP I am not forced to toe a political party line and can simply work in the best interests of our local community. That is what I intend to do for the rest of this Parliamentary term and beyond. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany via Manukau, and the Puhinui Station interchange. The project is still in early stages of investigation and the type of vehicle for this rapid transit has not yet been decided. Mr Ross has been a member of the AMETI forum, which includes a number of politicians and key stakeholders. We welcome Mr Ross’ positive support, and that of other stakeholders, for the Airport to Botany Rapid Transit project. We feel there will be genuine enthusiasm from the community around establishing a fast, direct service from Botany to the Airport. ➤ For more information on the project, please visit www.at.govt.nz/AtoB

EDUCATION

Principal wins national leadership award Principal of Howick Intermediate Yolande Franke has won this year’s Australian Scholarship Grant (ASG) National Excellence in Teaching (NEiTA) Founders’ Leadership Award. Franke was one of the 15 inspirational educators nominated from 2000 applications for the award. She was nominated last year by a parent. The citation says, before she took over as principal, Howick Intermediate School was on a oneyear ERO review, had a falling roll and only 30 per cent of the students came from within the school zone. Under Franke’s direction, the school is now under a three-year review, 80 per cent of students come from within the school zone and the Community Consultation

Survey this year returned a satisfaction score of 83 per cent. Franke, who was invited to Parliament for the presentation of the award from Education Minister Chris Hipkins on Thursday, says it’s very humbling “and the acknowledgement from the Howick community is lovely. I think it’s a success story for the community and evidence of what a great team can achieve.” The award comes with a $5000 professional grant. “I would like to attend an international conference to gain fresh perspectives from leading thinkers on ways to approach the challenges facing the education sector, as well as, gain further inspiration to further fuel future-focused learning and teaching,” she said.

Biosecurity

Fruit fly search spills into area Biosecurity operations to try and establish the prevalence of the fruit fly pest in parts of Auckland have spilled from Otara into the Flat Bush and East Tamaki areas. The Ministry of Primary Industries has set up controlled areas after the discovery of three single male Queensland fruit flies in separate surveillance traps on the North Shore and two single male Facialis fruit flies which were found in separate surveillance traps in Otara. To manage the fruit flies that have been found, Controlled Area Notices (CAN) has been issued

for all three suburbs. This restricts the movement of certain fruit and vegetables out of the Controlled Area to help prevent the spread of any fruit flies if any are present. At the weekend, Biosecurity had a strong presence at the Otara Market, supported by community leaders, educating the public about the facialis fruit fly found in the suburb. “The response and support from the public there was amazing as it has been in Devonport and Northcote too,” says Biosecurity New Zealand spokesperson, Dr Catherine Duthie. “This is critical as we

need the whole community to pull together on this type of biosecurity response.” ➤➤Find out about the Controlled Area Notice and movement controls. You can download the CANs for Devonport, Northcote and Otara from the MPI website: ➤➤ https://www.biosecurity. govt.nz/protection-andresponse/responding/alerts/ fruit-flies/ ➤➤If there are no further detections, the operations in each area are expected to end 14 days after the last detection.

Carol laughs saying, “I was asked the same question on TV3, and the interesting thing was that over 500 people signed up on the site right after that interview. It’s never been so busy.” The 69-year-old techie says that social media has caused an epidemic of loneliness, which is the biggest killer. “Healthwise, it’s the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Our site helps people connect in the virtual world which could lead to human connections,” she says. Carol concedes that while some members may say `yes’, they are interested in dating; most people are looking for companionship, making friends and travelling together. “We’ve had a member say she’s just moved to Cambridge and wants to know if there are any Chirpy Plus members she could connect with there. We’ve also had someone write in from a retirement home asking if there were any Chirpy Plus members in the same retirement home that the person could meet up with.” Carol, a former CIO of Bunnings, says she, along with a team of 15, moderates the site. “Every day we look at what is happening and that’s what makes us different. We provide a trusted environment where people feel safe.” They are now looking at adding some games to keep members engaged. “We are planning to run something like a pub quiz at a set time every day and give the members the feeling of being in a community hall. We will also add bingo and start a chat room at some time.” Launched in November last year, Chirpy Plus already has more than 3500 members in New Zealand and more than 3000 members in Australia. Now the plan is to launch in the US. “My son is a US citizen and very good in sales and marketing. He’s also a good public speaker,” says the proud mother. Having worked with Shaun for the

last five years, this is the third start-up they’ve worked on. “When people meet us they automatically assume that he is the techie and are surprised to know that it is a 69-year-old.” Though signing up to the site is free, there are plans to build a premium model which will have subscriptions. Currently, Chirpy Plus has Genesis Energy as a partner and has managed to get members a good power deal. More tie-ups with national providers are on the way. The plan is to make it a sustainable revenue model. “We are talking to investors and want to be another Xero out of New Zealand,” says Carol. “Now all we need is your help for little Kiwi company take on the world.”

World-class Elvis tribute artists to perform at Botanic Gardens Region’s sports awards nominations now open sport

The 10th Anniversary of Elvis in the Gardens will be held on Sunday, March 3 at the Auckland Botanic Gardens from 10am6.30pm – and it’s entirely free. Organisers Katrina and Kerryn Winn started the event back in 2009 wanting to give back their professional skills to the community for a free Music Festival. Each year a bucket collection has collected funds for a chosen charity and this 10th year that charity will be the event itself! “It takes us nine months to raise the $140k required to put this popular event on completely free,” says Katrina who works fulltime in a major corporate. “It is increasingly more difficult to get corporate sponsorship support for community events and council funding has dropped to less than 10 per cent of the total cost.” The Winns are determined to keep the event free and especially to ensure the children’s activities remain free so there are

no financial barriers to any family attending. This year, the six and half hours of non-stop music will include Kiwi favourites like Brendon Chase, Che Orton and Andy Stankovich. Also this year, instead of an Austalian ETA, Dean Craig from the UK will perform a set. That apart, spectators can expect a world-class performance from headliner Dean Zelligman supported by the world renowned Tributes in Concert Band from Adelaide. Considered by his peers to be the number one 50’s Elvis Tribute Artist in the world, Dean Z is now the ambassador for Elvis Presley Enterprises at Memphis week and is the heavy weight in the industry. Until last year no member of Elvis’ family had ever visited New Zealand. This year Donna Presley will be there. Donna, first cousin to Elvis Presley, will be attending the

event for the second time. Not only was she blown away by the international standard of the event last year, she also maintained Dean Z was the best 50s tribute artist since Elvis. Donna lived at Gracelands with Elvis until she married, then continued to visit daily when she worked for Vernon Presley up until Elvis’s death. Katrina and Kerryn say that Donna is now the Patron of their Elvis NZ Club. Attracting over 15,000 spectators each year, this family-friendly event has had thousands attend for nine consecutive years. Elvis in the Gardens is now the largest single Elvis music concert of its kind in the world and visitor numbers from around the country and overseas increase year on year. The event is held on the old Ellerslie Garden site with entry off the bottom of Everglade Drive and parking on site for up to 20,000 people.

Nominations are open for the annual sports awards. One of the major changes this year is that the Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) is organising sports awards for the 2018 season on behalf of the Howick Local Board. The other key change is that several new categories have been included. The big awards evening is also set. It will be held Thursday April 11 at the Pakuranga United Rugby Clubrooms. Pakuranga United Rugby’s Amanda Dyason said the awards ceremony will include a buffet dinner, celebrity guest speaker and music after the awards presentation. Nominees will receive a complimentary ticket. “We’ll be endeavouring to get as many nominations as we can for the attached categories,” said Dyason. “This year we have included categories specific to our local schools as we would like to acknowledge the achievements that the schools as well as clubs and individuals are having in

our community. “Nominations are not limited to clubs and schools in our area - they can also include individuals that may live in the area but belong to a club elsewhere.” These nominations will be collated and a panel including Local Board members will finalise winners from the nominations received. Nominations close on Wednesday March 20 and can be forwarded to Amanda Dyason rugbyadmin@purc. co.nz.

1067 vehicles line up for car show Now in its fourth year, the annual Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show is one of east Auckland’s largest free community events. With 1067 classic cars and motorcycles planned for display on Sunday, March 3, about 10,000 members of the public are expected. The classic car show had its origins with the Auckland Jaguar Drivers Club. Laurie Hayward and other club members from 2013 canvassed some clubs for a proposed British Classic Car Show. Soon after Howick resident Rev Dr Richard Waugh organised a small car display at Lloyd Elsmore Park for the 60th anniversary of the Jaguar Mk VIIM, a four-door luxury car produced by Jaguar Cars of Coventry from 1951 to 1956. Richard and Laurie quickly determined that Lloyd Elsmore Park was an ideal venue, with cars displayed on the tree-lined grassy avenues near the Howick Historical Village. The first event was held in March 2016 with 440 cars and every year since the display numbers have increased. Distinctives affirmed early on

were British and European cars andmotorcycles only; free entry to participants and the public alike; and non-competitive. The many British and European car clubs of Auckland have given strong support and the event is organised by volunteers with more than 130 people serving on the day, including from local Rotary clubs, Ormiston Venturer

scouts, LifeGrowth Community Trust, Howick Historical Village, Pakuranga United Rugby Club and Howick MenzShed. Radio EAST FM do a lively broadcast through the day. The event is sponsored by the Howick Local Board with important support from Times Newspapers, Protecta Insurance and NZ Classic Driver.

This year there will be special displays for Citroen’s 100thbirthday anniversary, 60th anniversary of Mini, and a unique story corral of cars including an ex-Royal Tour Rolls Royce and recently restored local Jaguar E Type. The Howick Historical Village will present a special live day with discounted entry ($8 adults

and free for children). Plan to come early, enjoy the music and stay for lunch, walk through the historical village. Have you heard about the ketogenic diet? This increasingly mainstream means of losing weight involves drastically reducing your intake of carbohydrates and replacing them with fats, which puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. While some people swear by the ketogenic diet, medical professionals and dietitians have concerns about whether it’s a healthy and sustainable way to lose weight.

A ketogenic diet forces your body to burn fat for fuel instead of glucose. When you stop eating carbohydrates and glucose is no longer available, your energy needs get fulfilled by converting fat into ketone bodies. Ketosis begins when your body must turn the fat stored in your muscles as glycogen into ketones. To keep your body in ketosis, you have to eat a diet that’s about 70 per cent fats, 20 per cent proteins and 10 per cent carbohydrates. Approved foods include meat, eggs, non-root vegetables, nuts, oils and some dairy products like cheese and butter. Prohibited foods include

The ketogenic diet was developed for a specific medical purpose – to help control seizures in children with epilepsy. However, it’s unclear whether it’s safe to use for weight loss over long periods of time. There are also numerous side effects that dieters may come up against. Many people experience nausea, cramps, headaches, constipation and light-headedness – symptoms sometimes collectively known as the “keto flu” – after their body goes into ketosis. What’s more, the diet involves eating large amounts of saturated fats, which increases your risk of heart disease. It may also lead to nutritional deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that you usually get from fruits and legumes. Extreme diets like the ketogenic diet rarely yield good long-term results. If you fall off the wagon (as is easy to do with extreme diets), you’ll start to gain weight back again. It’s safer and more effective to lose weight gradually with a balanced diet that’s easier to stick to over time.

REINZ calls for financial support for landlords F

ollowing the weekend’s announcement from Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford, the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) is calling for the Government to consider providing landlords with financial support to help meet the costs of complying with the new healthy homes standards to make rental properties warmer and drier. REINZ is supportive of the proposed healthy homes standards, but this needs to be implemented in a way that finds a balance for landlords rather than causing them to withdraw from the market given the raft of legislative changes currently in the market. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “REINZ welcomes the announcement from the Housing and Urban Development Minister yesterday (Sunday) around the healthy homes standards. It’s

shocking to think about the sheer number of Kiwis that live in subpar housing and get sick as a result of cold/damp homes. We applaud the Minister for introducing these new measures to help make rental homes healthier for tenants. “However, we would like to see these changes introduced in a way that achieves a balance rather than causing landlords additional costs which are likely to then be passed on to tenants in the form of rent increases. If the Government can help offset some of the cost to private landlords via subsidies or access to discounted pricing, this would likely be a deterrent from putting up rents and could reduce any disincentives for private landlords to leave the market thereby further reducing rental stock,” continues Norwell. REINZ would also like to see an exemption from the need for bathroom extractor fans for landlords

who fit bathrooms with a showersteam dome. “Shower-steam domes can be cheaper and quicker to install than an extractor fan and don’t require a registered electrician for installation. “They also don’t have an ongoing cost from a tenant’s perspective. Therefore, we would like the

Housing and Urban Development Authority to consider providing an exemption for landlords who install a shower-steam dome as they are considered an extremely effective form of containing shower moisture which is the main cause of mould and dampness in bathrooms,” says Norwell. REINZ also echoes concerns made by the New Zealand Green Building Council that Housing New Zealand homes have an additional two years to meet the new standards. “Yesterday’s announcements will do a great deal to improve the private rental stock, however, surely the Government should have to meet the same deadlines as private landlords? We don’t think this is an unreasonable expectation,” says Norwell. “Finally, we welcome the Minister’s announcement that online tools will be published later in the year for landlords and tenants to determine the heating requirements for their living room and that landlords and tenants will not have to measure temperatures inside the home. “We also look forward to the guidance that will be available for complying with other aspects of the standards. This will be essential information for our property managers to ensure they communicate the appropriate requirements with landlords and tenants while the standards are implemented.”

The NZ Property Investors Federation is supportive of quality standards in rental properties, fully supporting the Minimum Standards legislation of 2016. However, tenants ultimately pay for these improvements so they need to be cost effective. Two parts of the Healthy Homes Standards don’t meet this requirement. While the NZPIF support compulsory insulation in rentals, topping up existing insulation provides very little improvement for tenants but costs almost the same as installing completely new insulation. The NZPIF supports fixed heating in rentals. Heat pumps are a great source of heating for some tenants and the NZPIF has arrangements with suppliers to help members provide these tenants with heat pumps. However, they are expensive to buy, install, maintain and replace so will increase rental prices by around $15pw. This means tenants who do not want and will not use a heat pump will still be paying for it through higher rent. While the NZPIF was supportive of compulsory heating in rentals, allowing cheaper but less energy efficient heaters would not require rental price increases and would give tenants greater choice in how they live in their home.

mum thickness of 120mm. • Rental homes will also be drier under these changes as kitchens and bathrooms will have to have extraction fans or range hoods. • Where rental homes have an enclosed subfloor space property owners will need to install a ground moisture barrier to stop moisture rising into the home. • The standards also reinforce existing law that says landlords must have adequate drainage and guttering to prevent water entering the home. • Draughts that make a home harder to heat will have to be blocked. “The standards are pragmatic, enduring and don’t impose an unreasonable burden on landlords and industry while being mindful that renters need to have warmer and drier homes as soon as possible,”

CP2567

he new healthy homes standards to make rental properties warmer and drier were announced by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford at the weekend. The standards set minimum requirements for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage, and draught stopping in residential rental properties. They reflect feedback from a wide range of public health experts, stakeholders including landlords, tenants and building experts. Twyford said making sure all New Zealanders had warm, dry homes was one of the most important public health changes the Government could make. “Nearly 600,000 households rent in New Zealand, and our rental stock is of poorer quality than owner-occupied homes. It’s estimated about 200,000 families live in rental homes that do not have ceiling or underfloor insulation. “The Ministry of Health says 6000 children are admitted each year for ‘housingsensitive hospitalisations’. These children have been found to be nearly four times more likely to be re-hospitalised and 10 times more likely to die in the following 10 years. We cannot continue to accept this.” The new standards go a long way toward making rental homes healthier for tenants: • All rental homes will be required to have a heater that can heat the main living area to 18oC. • Rental homes must have ceiling and underfloor insulation that either meets the 2008 Building Code insulation standard, or (for existing ceiling insulation) has a mini-

Twyford says. The next step is for the standards to be drafted in regulations and approved by Cabinet. Chic and modern for the heart of the home

ADVERTORIAL KC14089A

Noeline Frost’s kitchen had remained unchanged for around 20 years. It has seen many homecooked meals, family gatherings and celebrations over the years.

achieve a chic modern look. “We didn’t change the layout much, but we changed the entire look, maximising drawer space so that it was more functional, easier to use and more aesthetically pleasing. The glossy finish is very good in terms of aesthetics and also easy to clean by wiping it down, so easy to maintain in terms of buffing and polishing years down the track,” she says.

However, Noeline says it was long overdue for a spruce up. She and her husband Brian had hopes of something modern and simple. They wanted their kitchen to inspire the renovation of the whole living area in their beautiful Papakura home. And with the help of Jag Kitchens, this is exactly what they got. The outdated 1990’s kitchen has been transformed into a contemporary haven that exudes modern functionality. The previous kitchen had pale green cabinets, green laminate countertops and brown accents. It is now a sleek, modern design with a crisp white bench top and cabinetry. “I was really certain that I wanted high polished white throughout so that it wouldn’t date and as our kitchen is the heart of our home I also wanted it to feel comfortable,” says Noeline. She says a lot of her ideas on style and colours came to life through discussing

Jag Kitchens designer Frances Fothergill (left) with Noeline Frost in her new kitchen.

trends and design options with kitchen designer Frances Fothergill. “The Jag Kitchen showroom was great for helping us refine our ideas, and showing us options we hadn’t even considered,” she says. The cabinetry is white Jag Acrylic Gloss, the perfect blank canvas for the red accents Noeline has dotted around the kitchen. The handles sit on top of the drawers and doors giving it a Scandinavian minimalist look. The 30mm polished stone benchtop is a real feature in the kitchen and contrasts well with the low grey marble look laminate table extension. “The table extension was

something we had in our old kitchen and we loved that it was at table height, so we could use it as a dining table,” says Noeline. Noeline says Frances put lots of thought into the layout and focussed on maximising existing space. Drawers throughout have been replaced impractical cupboards, allowing easy access to kitchen appliances and utensils. One of the corners is well used now with a Hafele Mondo

revolving corner cupboard giving easy access to all appliances. One of her favourite parts of the kitchen is the splashback which is white and red imprinted with native Pohutukawa tree branches. “It reminds me of our friends’ home in Buckland’s Beach which overlooks Pohutukawa trees and the ocean,” she says. Jag Kitchen designer Frances says the goal was to maximise space, improve the layout and

Frances says the hob area which was previously much farther away from the sink has been moved to a more practical location, and handy spice drawers added underneath. New floor tiles and a great new glass splashback complete the kitchen, she says. Noeline says working with Frances has been great. “I would definitely recommend them to anybody. Frances and her team were patient with my questions, helped steer me in the right direction and took all of my suggestions on board.”

Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

Black Ferns just a champion team D

espite strong competition, Sarah Hirini’s unbeaten Black Ferns Sevens deservedly won 2018 Team of the Year honours at the recent Halberg Awards. They are a crackerjack team who have overcome the disappointment of a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics to maintain an incredible winning streak since Kelly Brazier’s long distance try struck gold in last year’s Commonwealth Games final against Australia on the Gold Coast. That they have maintained the Midas Touch without injured Northland superstar Portia Woodman says much for their ability and teamwork under the superb captaincy of Hirini (nee Goss), with Taranaki speedster Michaela Blyde taking over Woodman’s mantle as the world’s best player. There are other stars like Tyla Nathan-Wong, Ruby Tui, Gayle Broughton, Niall Williams and Stacey Waaka who have shone brightly but it is mainly the team ethic that has brought them such success.

Quick and vigorous at the breakdown, they tackle like demons and spread the ball wide with accurate passing to speedsters Blyde, Woodman and Waaka. What makes speedy veteran Woodman so remarkable when fit and healthy is she is a powerful scrummager yet still has the energy and pace to score long-range tries out wide. Not surprisingly their mentor Alan Bunting joined men’s sevens coach Clark Laidlaw (NZ men’s sevens), Joe Schmidt (Irish rugby), Leon Birnie (Under 17 women’s football) and Gordon Walker (canoe racing) as Coach of the Year finalists. As mentor of remarkable multiple Sportswoman of the Year winner Lisa Carrington, Walker got the nod. Popular Timaru builder Tom Walsh successfully defended his Sportsman title and added the supreme award for Sportsperson of the Year upon winning the World Indoor Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League events.

There are bigger, more muscular opponents on the world stage but none to match the competitive Walsh’s speed in the circle. Indycar champion Scott Dixon, Olympic bronze medallist freeskier Nico Porteous and Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin were other Sportsman finalists. Another shot putter, World Under-20 champion Maddison Wesche, appears to be following in the wake of Valerie Adams and was the Halberg Emerging Talent winner from a strong field that included football goalkeeper Anna Leat, Amelia Kerr (cricket), Josh Armit (yachting) and Lewis Clareburt (swimming). The talented Leat won NZ’s Favourite Sporting Moment for her shootout goal which clinched her Under-17 team an historic bronze medal at the world champs. Meanwhile the Chiefs and Blues were left to hold their heads in shame upon being thrashed by the Brumbies (5417) and Sharks (26-7) respec-

tively in the weekend’s Super Rugby contest. The awful Chiefs leaked eight tries to the rampant Brumbies while the Blues resorted to old habits when they fumbled and bumbled their way to defeat against the Sharks in Durban. Hopes that Sonny Bill Williams would spark the backline with his offloads failed to materialise with the heat and humidity contributing to a slippery ball that didn’t stop the Sharks scoring four tries to the Blues’ one. The one bright spot for the visitors was workaholic No 8 Dalton Papalii who continues to impress. Only the Crusaders and Highlanders managed wins among the NZ franchises with the cohesive Crusaders beating the Hurricanes 38-22 in a match in which Scott Barrett, Richie Mo’unga and Ben Lam each scored two tries. The Highlanders edged the Reds 36-31. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Having already represented her country at Indoor cricket, Skye’s selection comes as no surprise but Howick Pakuranga Cricket is delighted to have its first women representative at national level. Howick Pakuranga’s Premier Women’s side continued to show its improved form on Saturday defeating its close rivals Parnell by 8 wickets. Parnell was bundled out for 42 with Marama Downes producing outstanding figures of 3/6, supported by Skye Bowden 2/11 and Amberly Parr 2/11. The Llamas knocked the runs off in 8 overs with Lucy Western 16* and Molly Penfold 17* scoring most of the runs. The Premier Reserve Women’s side also had a good win against Cornwall Gold at Melville Park. Cornwall batted first and were dismissed for 111 in 26 overs. Best bowlers were Ayesha Babar 3/15 and Mansimran Kaur 2/11. Howick scored the runs with the loss of only one wicket. Cherise Stevens 60 and Lauren Ross 35* ensured the women remained at the top of the table in the 35 over competition.

Your view Celebrating unsung heroes

The feel good story about the self motivated Litter Ninja Gui Chen picking up rubbish and keeping our roads and parks clean made a good read. Its ordinary people like him who do extraordinary things that need to be celebrated in our local papers. He is a shining example of unsung heroes like him in our community. Bless his soul for wanting to give back to NZ communities. We should take a page out of his book and get more senior citizen and migrant groups as well as school children to take on projects like that—it would go a long way in living up to our image of clean, green New Zealand. Carved ceremonial staff

Thanks for the great well-written article about the Koha :) We just wanted to say that the “carved ceremonial staff” was actually gifted by a Maori support teacher, Mrs. Sidwell! As it was her last days with Pakuranga College, she wanted to leave by gifting something special to the school so she commissioned my father to carve the Tokotoko for Matua Hemi! Carl Taka

Miller all revved up for Brit & Euro Classic ■■By Nick Krause

A

ndy Miller’s enduring passion for motorcycles began as a teenager. He remembers fondly his first bike at the age of 15 – a Suzuki GT250 – which he kept until he was 20. There was a big gap while travelling and with family and work commitments. The 53-year-old was busy with two years in Australia and the UK, seven in the US (where he married and had children), five years back in NZ and 10 years in Singapore before returning to NZ in 2013. He started riding again while in Singapore in 2003 and went through a selection of modern bikes including a Yamaha Fazer, BMW Rockstar, Honda CBR1000RR and KTM Superduke. “However I wanted to start restoring classic bikes and specifically those with unusual engine configurations hence the 3 cylinder Laverda Jota and the 6 cylinder Benelli,” he said. “I also have a 1972 Laverda SF750 race bike which I fully restored while in Singapore including a complete engine rebuild.” Miller has owned 13 bikes and currently owns five and it will be his third year at the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show.

“I’ve just finished rebuilding a MotoGuzi V65 and am now focused on an engine rebuild for my Laverda race bike, plus will do a cosmetic upgrade on the Benelli over the winter, said Miller. “The Benelli SEI 750 is a bike I’d always wanted however never liked the way it looked from the factory so was lucky to find a bike with a cafe racer conversion and imported it to NZ (from Spain). “My intention is to refresh the bike over the next year (shorter tank, seat moved forward, etc)
