Staff at Sunnyhills School stood along Glenmore Road from 7.30am - 8.15am on Friday as part of a Community Action Day to gather support and raise awareness around current issues faced by teachers.

On Wednesday August 15, Sunnyhills School will close as staff strike to join the national campaign run by NZEI (our union). This is a decision that is not taken likely. We are incredibly lucky to be in a profession that we love. It’s dynamic and rewarding and every day a different child makes us smile. It’s not just about the pay, it’s about retaining excellent teachers who are supported to give the best quality of teaching and learning.

For so long now the government of the time hasn’t valued our profession enough to provide schools with funding to meet the needs of all students and staffing for better workloads.

Here at Sunnyhills we are fortunate that the wider effects of the teaching crisis are kept at bay.

We have quality teachers and quality learning programmes, however this is getting more difficult to maintain.

Bullied boy became bully ■ FARIDA MASTER

F

or two years he sat outside the school staff room so that other kids wouldn’t pick on him.

Then one day he was invited by the cool kids to be a part of their group. From that day, he turned from being bullied into a bully.

Sharing his story of low self esteem, drug and alcohol abuse with students of Botany Downs Secondary College, mental health advocate Mike King spoke about how he always waited for approval from his dad. It never came.

“I thought my dad was the coolest on the planet and I wanted him to look at me with pride and say, “That’s my boy!”

“Instead, I was this ugly child with a really big head and no self worth,” said King, the founder of Key to Life Trust.

“They teased me at school.

But when I was accepted in the cool gang, they started to use me to pick on vulnerable kids.”

Addressing Year 12 students in the school auditorium over two interactive sessions, King who is on an I Am Hope nationwide tour - was reaching out to students about mental health.

Peppered with humour and stark honesty, the former stand–up comedian’s personal narrative was both damning and inspiring.

“I knew it was wrong but I went against my instinct and tried to pick on my best mate because the cool kids asked me to. My biggest fear was rejection. That’s how I moved from being sidelined to becoming the school bully.

“By the time I was 13, I had a war going on in my head. It’s also the reason why people like me are attracted to drugs

and alcohol. Alcohol takes away the shame, embarrassment and hurt, and gave me the confidence to be the real me.

“At 17, I was into drugs and this is the life I lead for the next 30 years.”

King went on to become a chef and later a popular standup comedian as well as an actor in dozens of TV shows.

“However, those were very dark days with me being completely smashed and having plenty of public meltdowns.”

The wake-up call came when his wife called to say that media were waiting outside their children’s school wanting a comment from them on how they dealt with their dad’s unruly behaviour.

“That’s the time I finally decided to see a counsellor. It’s then I realised that my head was like a boiling cess-

pool of thoughts. I used drugs and alcohol to put a lid on it.

But unfortunately, it’s all the people around you that suffer.

They get burnt because the pot is boiling.

“The reason why I am telling you this is every person puts a lid on a boiling pot, instead of finding out what the stressful situation is.”

The secret to good mental health, he said, is lifting people up and making sure everyone is included at school and in communities.

“Be kind to other people and let them know that they have a value in your life. Lastly, be open and ask for help.

“Chances are 80 per cent of young people will have a major crisis before they leave school. But that’s normal. The reason why no one knows about is because no one talks about it!”

Suspicious package not suspicious Police and other emergency services responded to a report of a suspicious package at a bank in Botany Town Centre on Monday afternoon.

The area around ANZ bank was evacuated as a precaution and the Specialist Search Group attended, a police spokesperson told the Times.

“The package was deemed not to be suspicious and the matter has since been resolved.”

MIT at risk from changes

Acknowledging the work that volunteers do Howick Local Board members were put to work at a special event to recognise the efforts of the area’s unsung heroes – its volunteers.

The elected members donned special aprons and acted as servers for the day to the more than 150 volunteers who attended the Howick Volunteer Recognition Awards event at Pakuranga Golf Club.

“It was our chance to say thank you for everything they do for our community,” says chair David Collings of the biennial event which attracted around 200 nominations.

“What’s really humbling when we do things like this is seeing the diversity of our community as well as the causes, projects and activities they are involved in – they really are at the heart of what makes this community tick.”

He says not only is volunteering good for the community, it is also good for the economy.

“Nationally volunteers contribute $3.5 billion to the economy, representing 1.7 per cent of gross domestic product. And with our area making up one-tenth of Auckland, our volunteers are making a large contribution to the local economy.”

he Government’s proposed changes to poststudy work rights for international students could cost New Zealand 1000 jobs and up to $1.4 billion, and do irreparable harm to tertiary providers like the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga.

“The Government’s changes are being made on the basis of preventing exploitation, which they should rightly be concerned with, but what they haven’t considered is the damage that will be done to the education sector where it relies heavily on international students,” he says.

“Tertiary providers have

warned the Government that their proposed changes will hinder their ability to attract international students who will seek other opportunities in other countries.”

MIT has calculated that it could lose up to 50 per cent of their international student intake if a proposal to increase the post-study work visa requirements is implemented.

This proposal would require international students studying non-degree Level 7 courses (like graduate diplomas) to study here for at least two years, as opposed to the one year that is required for those studying a Bachelor’s degree.”

“The entry criteria for a gradu-

ate diploma requires the applicant to have already completed a Bachelor’s degree, which clearly demonstrates that these students are qualified in their area of study so should continue to have the same post-study work rights as those graduating from a Bachelor’s programme,” says Brown.

“If international students decide it’s not worth it, they will simply stop coming here to study.

“MIT could lose up to $10 million in revenue if this happened, which would result in more than 60 full-time jobs lost and a significant decrease in the number of qualified people able to take up post-study employment in

the surrounding areas of South and East Auckland.”

MIT wouldn’t be the only provider to suffer should these changes go through, says Brown.

“Our entire export education sector is at great financial risk if the Government continues with these changes.

“The Government must reconsider these proposed immigration changes immediately before they jeopardise New Zealand’s reputation for international study and harm our ability to attract students from overseas.”

Education Minister Chris Hipkins has been contacted for comment.

Saying goodbye to patients is hard A

fter 33 years at Marina Medical, Dr Bruce Page has decided to retire.

This has been a tough decision for Bruce, moreso, when it comes to saying goodbye to his patients, many of whom he has looked after for his entire career in general practice.

“But I know that the patients will be in good hands with the team of doctors and nurses we have at Marina Medical.

“I have tried very hard to put together a practice that puts the patient at the centre of care, with communication being paramount

in the doctor/patient relationship. And I am immensely proud of the beautiful environment we have created in which to care for patients”, smiles Bruce.

Talking about what he is most proud of, he says, “I think I have succeeded in forming a therapeutic relationship with my patients. This is paramount for good care. The ‘science’ is obviously important but we should not forget the `art’ of medicine.”

His advice to any new professionals coming into the practice is: “Again, I come back

to the importance of communication - this is the key to forming a therapeutic relationship. Don’t neglect that aspect of your practice.”

So what does he look forward to the most in his retirement years?

“Being able to smell the roses, not having to worry about keeping on top of an “In Box”, being able to arrange activities at the drop of a hat, playing a bit more music, maybe returning to golf, and giving time back to my very supportive wife Juliet, and our family.”

New red light cameras for east Auckland T

wo East Tamaki roads are set to become safer with Auckland Transport rolling out new red light cameras.

Accent Drive and Te Irirangi Drive will host two of the six planned cameras set to be rolled out across Auckland in an effort to reduce dangerous driving.

The new camera sites, funded by the regional fuel tax, will bring the total number of red light cameras operating in the region to 12, joining the six camera sites that began operating in June.

When the new cameras are ready to go live, Auckland Transport will choose which six sites will be enforced, with enforcement rotating between the 12 sites.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the city needs to do everything it can to reduce unnecessary injuries.

“Red light running places lives in danger. Last year there were four fatalities and 19 serious injuries at intersections due to red light running.

“The scale of red light running in Auckland is demonstrated by the new cameras installed in June catching 660 people running red lights in just three weeks.”

He says installing the cameras is about saving lives – not revenue raising.

“We are publicising where the cameras will be to change behaviour and prevent people being hurt and killed, not to catch people out.”

“Aucklanders have the right to feel safe when they have the right of way to drive or cross a road at a lighted intersection.

“Over the next ten years we will bring the total number of red light cameras in Auckland to 42,” he said.

Auckland Transport Chief Executive Shane Ellison says road safety is the organisation’s top priority.

“Installing red light safety cameras is just one tool that we are implementing to make intersections safer, and we have an ongoing programme to install even more in the next 10 years.

“Auckland Council and Government are prioritising road safety initiatives as part of the $28 billion investment in Auckland’s transport network over the next ten years,” he said.

Inspector Peter McKennie, Operations Manager, Road Policing says running red lights is just not worth it.

“You’ve got to ask yourself; is it worth crashing and risking injury – or worse – killing yourself or someone else?”

Government going backwards Employment law reform is one of the most talked about issues in New Zealand right now, as businesses across the country worry what might happen to them.

And sadly, they are right to worry.

The Labour/Green/NZ First Government’s proposals will wind the clock back on industrial relations, strengthen union powers, and pit employers against their employees, none of which is conducive to doing business.

With plans to end the starting out wage, remove 90-day trials for businesses with more than 20 staff, implement consecutive unsustainable minimum wage rises, and bring back 70s-style standardised wage bargaining, it’s no wonder business confidence in New Zealand is at its lowest in 10 years.

And despite what the Government is trying to tell us, business confidence does matter. A lack of it means businesses are slower to grow and are less willing to employ or train new staff or lift wages for hard-working Kiwis.

Economists are now predicting our economic growth could drop to 1.5 per cent, when the world economy is forecast to grow by 3.9 per cent. Every lost 1 per cent of GDP means $800 million less

News from Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany Helping people back into work The single best thing that we can do for someone who is unemployed and receiving a benefit is help to get them into work, earning their own income.

When National was in Government, our record on unemployment was strong. Under our watch over 70,000 beneficiaries moved off the benefit into work, and between 2011 and 2017 the number of children living in benefit-dependent households reduced by 60,000.

More importantly, this happened because we were building an economy that was adding jobs and lifting incomes. We also provided requirements for those receiving benefits like the Jobseeker benefit, such as having to be looking for a job, attending job interviews when they are offered, and remain drug-free. If someone failed to do this repeatedly sanctions could be imposed to encourage them to get back on track finding employment.

We know benefit sanctions worked, with 95 per cent of people receiving a formal warning meeting their obligations within four weeks.

It’s worrying the current Labour Government is signalling a shift away from these types of mutual obligations.

The basic idea was the government has a responsibility to help people in times of need, but those receiving the benefit also have a responsibility to not abuse the support they’re given. The aim isn’t to be tough on beneficiaries, but to recognise that people are better off in paid work so they can live independent lives and provide a better future for their families.

Since Labour came into Government there’s been a 21 per cent drop in the number of benefit sanctions imposed despite there being almost 2000 more people on the Jobseeker benefit.

Thanks in large part to National’s management of the economy, we saw Kiwi businesses succeed and grow with 10,000 new jobs created every month for the last two years.

This Government is putting that all at risk and the only ones to come out on top will be their union-backers.

It’s important we help raise incomes and encourage people into work.

Over the past nine years incomes have risen by an average of $13,000.

In that time over 70,000 people moved off the benefit and into work, giving them more opportunities and skills.

Fewer sanctions isn’t a sign that more people on benefits are being compliant. It’s a sign the Government is going soft in this area.

People’s lives are improved when they get off a benefit and into work. That must continue to be encouraged. Unfortunately, this Government is showing it has no expectations or aspirations for people to get back on their own two feet.

Making time for wellness I

n today’s society, there is a constant pressure to succeed in all aspects of life. The images of flawless models portrayed in glossy magazines and the flamboyant personalities frequently seen on popular TV programmes might leave you feeling worse for wear. Or at least wondering whether you are the only one feeling less than perfect.

‘We now understand that there are strong links between mental and physical wellbeing and that this works both ways’ explains Dr Daniel Calder, GP in Botany Junction Medical. ‘Take something as simple as sleep. We often take it for granted, yet without good sleep it’s really difficult to function well’.

Anxiety and stress is not something that just happens to others, it can affect anyone. We can all think of times when we might have struggled or felt ‘stuck’. It can be hard to break out of negative thinking and get back on track. Many patients that have long-term conditions find that this affects their mood and wellbeing.

They might worry about their condition limiting them in the future or find it hard to come to terms with the need to take lifelong medications. This is where being registered with a GP clinic is important as it links you in with a supportive team of health professionals.

‘We realised that mental health is something that affects so many of our patients.

This was the first step in making a real commitment to improving mental health’ says Dr Calder. He explains that Botany Junction is now participating in a new Wellness programme in collaboration with Counties Manukau DHB. The Wellness programme is based on feedback from consumers as to what they would like from their health professionals.

Winter concert series begins

It was three hours of non-stop fun, dance and music. The 2018 Cultural Night at Pakuranga College was a showcase of talent as well as the unity that exists in such diversity. Performances by African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Tongan, Samoan, Chinese Cultural groups had the crowds pumping with energy. The line-up of young MCs who kept the mood upbeat deserve a special mention.

eachlands Countdown will be the first Countdown supermarket in the country to welcome into its stores a Boomerang Bag display as a part of their efforts to remove single use plastic bags from their stores.

Due to the Beachlands’ store being the first in the country to do it, Plastic Free Pohutukawa Coast (PFPC) and Countdown recently hosted an event where volunteers from PFPC, including Beachlands School children who have made a large number of the Beachlands Boomerang Bags— were present alongside the boomerang bag display.

They explained to customers what boomerang bags are and how they work (i.e. they are free to use and return).

The PFPC is a community initiative with the goal to rid the Pohutukawa Coast of single use plastic.

The initiative has a goal of eliminating single use plastic bags from Beachlands by the end of the year.

PFPC are helping the community to make this transition by providing the community with Boomerang Bags which are free to borrow and return.

Thus far they have managed to reduce plastic bag usage at the Wakelin Rd shops

With an extensive training in facial cosmetic surgery, I particularly enjoy the challenge of doing difficult facial surgery such as facelifting, blepharoplasty (eyelid tuck), rhinoplasty (nose reduction), otoplasty (prominent ear correction). I like to make sure my patients get

With advances in local anaesthetic out-patient surgery in the last 10 years, it is now possible to do the bulk of these procedures right here in our modern operating theatre at Marina Specialists under IV sedation with full monitoring, two experienced theatre nurses present and the back-up of a full resuscitation trolley and defibrillator, neither of which we have yet needed to use in the eight years that Marina Specialists Theatre has been working.

Another extensive part of my practice is breast augmentation, reduction and reconstruction done at Remuera Surgical Care and Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre where tummy-tucks, liposuction and fat grafting (for face and breasts) are also done.

T

he cast of Harlequin Musical Theatre’s current production of Nunsense The Mega Musical is sure to impress!

This show has some excellent local talent who work tirelessly right throughout the show and, indeed before and during the interval, to keep the audience in the palms of their hands.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken or, rather, what is left of them after a tragic domestic disaster,

are led by Reverend Mother Mary Regina played by Maryanne Rushton.

A fantastic character role, Rushton plays her gags as much as she possibly can and who would have thought a Reverend Mother had showgirl status?

In the role of Sister Mary Amnesia is theatre stalwart Emma Bishop, who displays her versatility, both a strong actress and vocalist. It has been a wee while since Emma has been on the stage, and it was a real treat to see her strut her stuff, hopefully she does not leave it so long next time!

Bishop really knows how to work her audience and plays her levels extremely well, and admirably does not overplay her role as some might be tempted to, but rather finds the importance in stillness.

A total vocal powerhouse, Sharon Hewlett brings some

superb soul to her role as Sister Mary Hubert. She also finds her character’s full comic potential, and even gets her boogie on.

Her final number is packed with lashings of vocal finesse. There are some strong performances all round from all members of cast; Lindsey Brown and Chloe Bagayas stand out.

There is an array of dance genres; tap and ballet, and there are plenty of kick lines, feathers, rubber gloves, and a few other surprises along the way.

The script and score is incredibly catchy and the gags will make you both laugh, and groan.

Musical director Brendan Agnew has done a stellar job with his band, and it is a pleasant surprise to have him interacting. In fact, this show is jam-packed from start to finish with plenty of audience interaction. This is a huge ask

for any actor, and often scary for an audience member but don’t let this put you off... everyone is made to feel very welcome indeed; it is a convent after all, and the cast should be extremely proud with just how well they handle the extra improvised pressure.

There were some opening night technical difficulties but I am confident that the technical directors will have these sorted out for the remainder of the season.

Director John Fausett together with choreographer Maritta Gillespie and vocal coach Robyn Kennerley are very fortunate indeed that they have such fantastic talent to work with to fulfil their vision.

Musicals was the theme for this year’s Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival bringing primary and intermediate schools across the local community together to showcase their dancing.

Our Lady Star of the Sea School hosted 14 schools on August 6 and 7, while Cockle Bay Primary School hosted 14 schools on August 8 and 9 at the Elim Christian Col-

lege. Cockle Bay chose Jellicle Cats from Cats for Year 3 and 4 and Revolting Children from Matilda for Years 5 and 6. Both groups are taught as part of an enriching dance extension programme at Cockle Bay School. Unlike other competitions, Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival is inclusive of all dance abilities and is simply a chance to show your love for dance.

Top home builds announced A

Devonport home and a Kohimarama renovation have won this year’s Supreme Awards in the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.

WG de Gruchy Construction won six regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home over $2 million award for their Devonport home. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award.

Hargraves Homes Ltd was awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme Renovation of the Year, along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation over $1 million award.

Judges said the winning House of the Year was a spectacular build, that made extensive use of New Zealand natural materials.

“This is a well-designed and functional house. Its high ceilings and clerestory windows, make it feel very open and spacious.

“Timaru Bluestone has been used for the exterior cladding and for interior feature walls. Totara Riverwood had been used on the fascia, ceilings, soffits and decking, along with Rimu Riverwood for the flooring and skirtings.

“This house has a warm lived-in feel. The credit must be given to the owners, architect and the team from WG de Gruchy Construction for the stunning build.”

Judges said the winning Renovation of the Year was a detailed renovation that took

place while the owners were still living in a part of the home.

A touch of timeless French country vibe Stepping into Cecilia’s kitchen is like stepping into a cottage in the old French countryside.

Cecilia’s house renovation was well underway when Emma and the Jag Kitchens team were asked to design and install the new kitchen.

The kitchen boasts warm neutral tones and subdued shades of blue resembling the muted hue of a provincial landscape. Cream profiled cabinets adorned with soft gold hardware, paired with a pastel blue splash back, make the kitchen looks spacious and comforting.

Blue and white ceramic vases brought from Cecilia’s home country in South America give the kitchen history and character. Soft pastel and natural tones tie the kitchen in with the space’s unique wallpaper and make the kitchen feel open and welcoming.

“I want my home to reflect who my family are and our heritage, and the kitchen was no exception,” she says.

Her criteria for Jag Kitchen’s designer Emma Weeber was a classic look, no white and plenty of storage. And she says this is exactly what she got.

“The kitchen doesn’t get a lot of light in the afternoon, so the combination of creams, oatmeal and gold bring real warmth to the kitchen that it didn’t have before,” says Emma.

But despite such a quick turnaround time, Cecilia says Emma never failed to give her realistic timeframes and stick to them.

Behind the traditional finish, the kitchen has all the space and functionality of a modern kitchen. “We used really clever pullout pantries to take full advantage of the space – there’s one wall with a dogleg in it that presented some challenges in fitting in cabinetry,” Emma says.

Hidden behind Dezignatek Thermoform profiled doors are pull-out cupboards and clever pantries that make use of all the available space. “The corner cupboards have handy rotating shelves so that no part of the kitchen space has gone unused.”

The occasional glass window cabinets are a pleasing break from the solid cabinet doors, with more beautiful ceramics and pottery on display again

giving the kitchen a timeless French country vibe.

LED strip lights are another modern touch, which Cecilia says has been brilliant for adding extra light when cooking during winter or giving the family an alternative to turning the bright kitchen overhead lights on at night.

stone (called Blanco Capri, from Spanish brand Silestone), the countertop is stain, scratch and water resistant.

The kitchen’s statement feature is arguably the classic butler style porcelain sink with a gold heritage tap.

“The sink is handmade in England by a company called Shaws – it’s a brand with a long heritage beginning in the 1890s,” says Emma. “It gives that much more character to the French country inspired style of the kitchen.”

“Everything was completed when they said it would be, and I never had to worry about the kitchen not fitting in with the rest of the renovations. Emma was just so easy to deal with and took the stress out of the whole process. The kitchen was the easiest part of the renovation.”

Emma says Jag Kitchens now has their own stone mason and cuts all their own countertops, making the whole process of designing and installing a new kitchen much quicker and more efficient.

or the fourth consecutive month Auckland residential property sales were in excess of the number for the corresponding month for the previous year while prices in July showed limited movement.

“The major trend in the market at present is that sales numbers are definitely higher than they were last year, and with 830 sales in July were 11.1 per cent higher than in July last year,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson.

“This trend of higher sales than in the monthly equivalent in 2017 started in April and is providing the current stability we are seeing in prices.

“The average sales price in July at $912,487 is in fact the highest average sales price we have recorded in a July, although it

is down 1.8 per cent on that for June. The median price for the month at $810,000 is the same as it was last month, and the same as it was for July last year.

“July is traditionally when prices reach their low point for the calendar year, and with sales numbers holding up the signs are there that not only is the market weathering winter well, it is setting itself up to be active in the coming spring,” said Thompson.

“Another pointer to prices remaining stable is that new listings at 1057 for the month were down to their lowest level this year, and the trend of declining choice for buyers has been growing since April.

“At 4115 properties at month end, we have the lowest stock levels for the past 10 months. While still some way above the squeeze

felt during the active trading years of 2013 to 2017, available choice is definitely declining.

“Homes for under $500,000 continued to be well-represented in the sales figures, with sales in this price segment representing 9.8 per cent of all sales.

“Sales of homes over $1 million represented 32.3 percent of all sales, with 4.1 per cent of this number achieving a sales price of more than $2m.

“Sales of lifestyle and rural properties were up 21 per cent on those for last month with solid sales of rural and lifestyle properties in the Swanson and Pukekohe areas. “Interest in beef and dairy farms in the far north is higher than normal at this time of the year. With listings being limited prices for this type of property remain stable.”

The number of million-dollar plus properties sold around New Zealand in the first half of 2018 rose by 4.2 per cent when compared to the first half of 2017, according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand’s (REINZ) Million Dollar Price Report.

This meant that the first half of 2018 saw an additional 218 houses sold over the $1m mark when compared to the same time last year (from 5220 houses to 5438). However, the overall figure is still below the record of 5867 in the second half of 2016.

The overall increase was even greater when looking at the New Zealand excluding Auckland figure. Outside of Auckland, a record number of million-dollar plus homes sold with a 27.9 per cent increase when comparing 1H 17 compared to 1H 18 (an increase from 1,066 to 1,363 properties).

Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “The last national increase in our Million Dollar Price Report was from the second half of 2015 compared to the second half of 2016, so it’s great to see confidence at the top end of the market. These figures, particularly outside of Auckland, highlight some of the buoyancy we’re seeing around the country.

“As land prices continue to hold up around the country and Aucklanders continue to take their search to the regions for a more relaxed and affordable lifestyle, it’s likely we may continue to see the number of million-dollar plus properties continuing to increase in the future,” continues Norwell.

Regional Breakdown From a regional perspective, Wellington saw the largest increase in the number of million-dollar plus properties sold, with an additional 115 houses sold over the million-dollar mark in the first half of 2018 (from 267 to 382).

Other regions with strong growth when comparing half-on-half were: Otago with an increase of 49 properties over the $1m mark (from 183 to 232) Waikato with an increase of 39 properties over the $1m mark (from 138 to 177) Bay of Plenty with an increase of 37 properties over the $1m mark (from 176 to 213).

Crusaders show character I

t took character and a magnificent defence for the Crusaders to deny the frustrated Lions in Saturday’s Super Rugby final at Christchurch’s tattered AMI Stadium.

How else can you describe that 37-18 win when the Lions won 56 per cent possession and 66 per cent territory against what All Blacks coach Steve Hansen calls the Crusaders’ Rolls Royce pack that supposedly gives Richie Mo’unga an armchair ride?

With nearly 90 per cent wins as All Blacks coach, I admire the laconic Hansen’s record but would respect him more if he acknowledged Mo’unga has outplayed Barrett and the mercurial Damian McKenzie every time they’ve clashed this season.

He’s right to cite 27-year-old Barrett’s superior experience with 65 tests compared to 24-yearold Mo’unga’s one, but how is

M’ounga going to gain more if it is judged ahead of the Crusader’s superior form?

That is not intended to denigrate Barrett who has been International Rugby Player of the Year over the past two years although left wing Rieko Ioane must have run him close in 2017.

However Barrett has struggled against the rush defence since last year’s British and Irish Lions tour and doesn’t cope with the tight marking as well as the elusive Mo’unga who is also the more accurate goal-kicker.

While Hansen and fellow selectors Ian Foster and Grant Fox are spoilt for choice when it comes to so many positions, experience, while valuable, should not always take precedence over form.

Having also starred at fullback, Beauden Barrett has the pace, sidestep and swerve to be a great attacking centre in the mould of

Bruce Robertson outside the likes of Mo’unga and Ryan Crotty.

Despite playing very little rugby because of injury, Sonny Bill Williams returns to the squad at the expense of human cannon ball Ngani Laumape who scored 15 tries in Super Rugby last year.

Lively Crusaders left wing George Bridge is another unlucky not to have made the 33-man squad although the All Blacks are well served there by Ioane and Waisake Naholo.

However Bridge has been consistently better than the once electrifying Nehe Milner-Skudder whose injuries have blunted his pace and enterprise. But he remains a wonderful talent capable of bouncing back to his best given time.

The same applies to hooker Dane Coles who has long been sidelined but has been named in the squad alongside Codie Taylor

Finals footy for Hornets It’s a big weekend for Howick Hornets Rugby League with two teams from the club in finals matches at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

The Under 13 Girls side will

play its final at 12.30pm and the Under 14-15 Restricted will kickoff at 4.05pm. Tickets are $2-$8 at the event.

The Hornets U13 Girls have had a cracking season and are heading to the finals at Mt Smart this weekend.

Having led the Crusaders defence against the Lions, it’s a shame Matt Todd’s sojourn in Japan has made him unavailable for the Rugby Championship against Australia, South Africa and Argentina.

Particularly impressive was the manner in which the Crusaders consistently sacked the Lions rolling maul from lineouts.

Having won back-to-back Super championships in his first two years as Crusaders coach after a successful stint as Canterbury Mitre 10 mentor, Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson has produced a sharp cutting edge.

Meanwhile it was great to see the Warriors bounce back from their horror Mr Hyde loss to the Titans with a splendid 18-12 Dr Jeykll win against the Dragons when they attacked well in the first half and defended strongly in the second.

Tannah makes NZ gymnastics team Twelve-year-old local gymnast Tannah van Niekerk has made the NZ gymnastics team The Farm Cove Intermediate School student – and former Sunnyhills Primary School student - will be representing New Zealand for the second time internationally at the Steps Tour in Perth.

Tannah, who has been doing gymnastics for five years, started off at a local club before moving clubs to train as a development gymnast with senior coaches so that she could reach her full potential and work towards her dream of competing at the Commonwealth Games one day. Tannah is on the elite pathway. Her gymnastics career started in step one (10 being the highest) and now competes in step nine, sometimes competing against gymnasts who are 4 years older than her. Her dad Greg van Niekerk said Tannah has shown immense talent and potential and trains 22 hours a week at Tri Star Gymnastics in Mt Roskill.

“It requires commitment and dedication,” said Greg.

“But with Tannah’s passion and work ethic, she manages to find time to balance school, home and gym life.”

Tannah has competed for the Auckland Region at Nationals in Invercargill and Nelson last year and this year will again represent the Auckland Region closer to home in Tauranga.

but the one she is most proud of is beam.

Last year Tannah competed two senior levels (levels seven and eight) during the competition season, and even though she was only 10 at the time, she managed to place in the top six in the country in her step.

“This achievement allowed her to go on to be named as the youngest member of a team of six to represent New Zealand at the steps tour in Singapore, where she went competed and brought back the overall gold medal,” said Greg.

This year the trial was again held in Christchurch and Tannah has again successfully made the team.

She will be travelling to Perth to once again represent New Zealand, this time in step nine. “With gymnastics being entirely self-funded Tannah and we would welcome any sponsors to aid with her continued growth as a New Zealand athlete,” said Greg.

ucklands Beach Association Football Club (BBAFC) has secured promotion to the NRFL Division One competition for next season.

It means two promotions in two seasons after the club gained promotion to division 2 this season. BBAFC president Andy Pullar said it is almost a year to the day since the BBAFC Men’s First team celebrated promotion from AFF Conference to NRFL Division Two, the highest level the club had ever attained.

Within the space of one season the team made another leap up the ladder by gaining promotion to the NRFL Division One. “It’s an outstanding achievement in itself, and made even more impressive by the fact that there are still four matches left in the regular season,” said Pullar.

The rapid climb through the ranks is attributed to the hard work of the coaching staff, management, and the players over the last three years.

“It’s fantastic for a club like Bucklands Beach to be able

to experience success like this using largely locally-based players,” he said. “It was important to us from the start to recruit the right players for the club, Charlie Hoyle (who won the premier league and Chatham Cup last season) was obviously a major coup and his experience has been invaluable to the young players both on and off the field.”

The club’s coaching staff are proud to have achieved success with this group.

“The players don’t need incentives other than to do well for the club,” said Pullar.

“If they are here for any other reason then they are the wrong fit for Bucklands Beach. That attitude has been important to us.”

There are many examples across Auckland clubs of short term success achieved without the club’s long term vision in mind. “To be able to achieve the success we have without compromising the values agreed between the coaches and committee is something that we are all very proud of,” said Pullar.

“I believe the club is in great shape moving forward into the first division. The challenge now is to consolidate our place in the 1st division.”

BBAFC Senior Convenor Paul MacKenzie said: “We believe BBAFC is a first division club. The first division is full of clubs with proud northern league histories and we are looking forward to trying to establish ourselves within these big clubs.”
