ow many moth plant pods can a Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) student pick when he enters a pod picking competition?

Amelali Vaka picked 1083 pods in all and was one of the five students who picked more than 1000 pods.

His efforts won him a $100 Prezzie voucher and a day trip to Motutapu Island that includes a helicopter ride.

Ryan Chen also led a group of BDSC Enviroschools students who pulled off 492 pods in all.

Amelali is one of the pest-warriors who understands that the moth plant invaded New Zealand some years ago. An invasive, strangling pest plant, it smothers whatever plant or tree it climbs up and over.

Moth plant is not picky. Native or exotic trees and plants: all can be strangled. Insects can be trapped by the sticky white sap that it produces.

The sap also irritates human skin. The pods burst open, the wind blows the seeds away—the life cycle starts again.

Watch out, the moth plant is probably on a fence, in a hedge or garden near you.

This year the Eden Albert and Howick Local Boards sponsored a competition for school students to see who could pick the most moth plant pods.

The competition saw more than 70 students from five schools take part.

Between them they removed 32,926 moth plant pods.

This represents about 12.9 million moth plant seeds in total.

The thought of running a half marathon for the first time is enough to scare most normal people – even if just a tiny bit.

It’s often a combination of nerves, excitement and perhaps a little bit of self doubt.

Those 21.1 kilometres can seem endless and overwhelming.

But it all becomes a whole lot easier when there’s a good cause – and a whole lot of support – behind it.

On October 28, Sarah Baker will take on her first ever half marathon in the name of raising money for the New Zealand Heart Foundation.

In 2016, her dad, a keen runner, suffered a heart attack part way through the Kerikeri Marathon and survived.

He underwent a double bypass and eventually got back to pounding the pavement – but has decided this race will be his last official event before passing the baton to Sarah.

“Now he’s realised ‘maybe running is not the best thing for me anymore’. So he’s cutting back on it a bit, and I think he’s going to do one last run – which will be this one with me, and then he’ll go back to running for fitness and not pushing himself too hard. So I’ll do it, so he doesn’t have to!”

After Sarah decided to run in the ASB Auckland Marathon to carry on her dad’s legacy, she decided fundraising for the Heart Foundation was a perfect fit. “I thought, ‘Why not?’ – I may as well do it for something, and the Heart Foundation means something to me now’.”

for the charity – “but ideally I’d like to raise over a grand” – a goal she’ll hopefully achieve by rallying co-workers with promises of baked goods.

With race day just weeks away, she’s got a goal time in mind – one her dad pushes her to achieve on their training runs.

“It’s our little thing we have together. It’s quite nice and I’m pretty lucky to have an awesome dad like him.”

Putting themselves out there Four candidates vying for the vacant Howick Ward seat on Auckland Council’s governing body were front and centre on Tuesday and faced a barrage of questions and a not insignificant amount of pressure ■■By Nick Krause

W

hen I was younger and watching the All Blacks standing for the national anthem, I used to focus right in on who was singing and, more importantly, who knew the words.

I had a flashback to those days on Tuesday night when the candidates fighting for Auckland Council’s single vacant seat representing the Howick Ward were called to their feet with the rest of us for the anthem.

Crikey they were all so good. They knew the words. They sang with gusto. I noticed, with some pride, they were all looking ever-so-slightly upwards. Did they rehearse this?

Then I turned. An overhead projector threw the lyrics up on the wall behind me. What a fool I felt. It was no trickery. I had expected the worst and learned a little lesson. Nothing is as it seems.

There are supposed to be six candidates and yet two haven’t even bothered turning up to either of the last two public forums. The absentees – Jessica Collings (yes, daughter of the Howick Local Board chair David) and Paul Young didn’t show. I didn’t understand their messages, but didn’t care really. Lloyd Wong, this week’s forum facilitator, the referee if you will, went further and suggested candidates in future should be obligated to come and

face the masses. I tend to agree. He also refused to play a video from Young.

The crowd – and the referee – were tough. They were relentless.

The four who took to the stage at East City Wesleyan Church (the host of many political forums over the years) were given no quarter really. It was full-on from the kick-off.

Around two-and-a-quarter hours of bombardment. Little wonder one or two looked absolutely shell-shocked

at the end (the four are Olivia Montgomery, Phil Taylor, Jim Donald and Damian Light).

There were around 100-110 in attendance so there was no shortage of questions, sent to Wong in an orderly fashion for feeding out to the candidates. Perhaps they should have been miked up. Each one must have risen to walk to the lectern and back at least 20 times.

And the questions were all to do with your usual chestnuts – bug-

bears really - in east Auckland – AMETI aka the Eastern Busway Project, the Reeves Road Flyover, ageing and failing stormwater infrastructure, flooding, our beaches, those darned reserves and the awful new Aussie contractors who don’t know how quickly grass grows in NZ. Oh, and buses. The really stupid and ineffectual change to bus time tables earlier this year which has caused chaos, inconvenience overcrowding and brought about a bus-

load of grievance. Surely AT has to act now, the candidates asked.

One of the points laboured by all candidates was a very real need for transparency (we’ve heard it before) and accountability (and this too). “Council needs to take heed of what the community wants,” said Montgomery.

Stockade Hill and the fight to protect the views pressed buttons, as it should. “I find the whole thing very frustrating...it’s an insult to the community,” said Light.

The folks kept coming back to transport. We’re out on a limb.

Where is our light rail? Taylor put it succinctly. “I stand for Howick getting a better deal. It feels like we’re a forgotten colonial outpost again.”

And Donald, a current Howick Local Board member, kept returning to the might of ferries, and not just the well-patronised vessels heading out of Half Moon Bay. He reckons we ought very much to reconsider getting a ferry service going from of Howick Beach. “I’m not a great talker – I prefer to do things.”

Wong, quite rightly, paid tribute to these four and their heart for stepping up. “They’re putting themselves out there.”

No smoke and mirrors here. Just good, honest politicking. ➤➤Voting closes at 12 noon on Thursday September 13 with the winner known on September 14.

Safer communities

Hair care at local library workshop

E

L

nsuring safe communities and a prevention-first approach to crime is an important goal for any Government.

That’s why it is good to see Labour picking up National’s position to increase the numbers of police working to prevent crime.

Increasing the resources for tackling crime before it starts is a good thing but we should never lose sight of the need to make sure that we continue to put people who commit crimes against others into prison.

The bottom line must always be to ensure the safety of our communities.

That’s why the Government’s recent direction on law and order is worrying.

The Government has held a Criminal Justice Summit where the Minister of Justice kept pushing his view that we should soften up our bail, parole and sentencing laws to make it easier for criminals to get out of prison early and harder for them to get sent there in the first place.

What’s worse, the Government said that the stories of victims shouldn’t be told in the media while the summit is happening.

He says this is too emotive. He doesn’t want those who have been burgled, robbed or assaulted to be heard.

The problem with the direction the Government is taking is that it doesn’t look at the cost to the victims of crime or the future victims of crime.

We strengthen bail and parole laws, we introduced three strikes and we were funding major prisons like Waikeria which would have seen major new rehabilitations facilities if it had not been abandoned by the current Government.

Investing in a 21st century prison and rehabilitation system while also ensuring that violent offenders are kept away from the community is our social investment approach at work.

It meant that we could support the most at-risk New Zealanders to fundamentally change their lives by getting social services agencies to work together to make a difference and protect the community at the same time.

The Government needs to get back on track and make sure our law and order policies make our communities safer.

This was amply demonstrated by a hair care workshop hosted recently at Botany Library, where 61 participants were involved in an interactive and informative hair care workshop taken by KESS Hair and Beauty.

The audience learnt about the perfect hair care routine as well as cut, colour and using various hair care products.

Charlie Liu even walked away home with a lovely hair care hamper that he won at the session.

Loud Shirt Day

Bandquest 2018

New Zealanders are invited to wear their loudest shirt and raise money this September to help deaf kids listen and speak. Loud Shirt Day is the annual appeal of The Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Paediatric Programme, two charities dedicated to enabling deaf children with cochlear implants or hearing aids to listen and speak like their hearing peers. Neither charity charges deaf children or their families for their services.

Auckland primary and intermediate school bands took the stage at this year’s regional Rockshop Bandquest over the weekend. A record 59 keen bands who competed at AGGS Dorothy Winstone Centre and east Auckland schools proved they can rock. Dexterous from St Kentigern College won ‘best original song’ winning $100 cash for their school, the lead singer/guitarist for Farm Cove Intermediate band Bag of Chips won the ‘Musicianship award’ and the ‘best keyboardist’ award went to Lit Squad, Bucklands Beach Intermediate.

Teacher’s dream comes true ■■By Farida Master

anessa Hancock is thrilled that she is the first primary/ intermediate school teacher in New Zealand to be selected for a life-changing professional development experience at the Yad Vashme: The World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Israel.

Mrs Hancock will be a part of a group of 25 educators from New Zealand that will journey to Israel for the Educators Seminar in January 2019 that will inspire and empower them with knowledge to impart to their school communities.

Another teacher from the area who will be on the same journey is Kaitlin Bethell from Ormiston Senior College.

“I am both humbled and deeply privileged,” says the Somerville Intermediate teacher who will take part in a 17-day intensive professional development programme in Israel.

The Year 8 teacher, who has always been very passionate about making her students aware of the Holocaust through the lens of fiction, is known to encourage her students to make connections through the novel series by Australian author Morris Gleitzman.

“The holocaust was not an accident in history; it occurred because individuals, organisations and governments made choices that not only legalised discrimination but also allowed prejudice, hatred and, ultimately, mass murder to occur,” says Vanessa.

about the dangers of remaining silent, apathetic and indifferent to the oppression of others.

“Most students demonstrate a high level of interest in studying this history precisely because the subject raises questions of fairness, justice, individual identity, peer pressure, conformity, indifference and obedience-issues that confront us in our daily lives.

“I always tell my students that it is important to be an upstander and not a bystander.”

She says that the 12 and 13-yearsolds she teaches are also affected by and challenged to comprehend the magnitude of the Holocaust. They are often struck by the fact that so many people allowed this genocide to occur by failing either to resist or to protest.

Mrs Hancock says she particularly enjoys moments of epiphany in the classroom when children see the passion and form a link.

“Some of them get teary-eyed about why it happened. This is a

great age to introduce them to the values of justice.

“In the past we’ve also had National Education director Chris Harris from the Holocaust Centre arranging holocaust survivors like Bob Narev and his wife who shared their moving story of survival with the students.”

Mrs Hancock says she is grateful to principal David Ellery and staff at Somerville Intermediate for the supportive environment that has made her dream come true.

Light up the imagination Uxbridge has launched its newest programme for pre-school children three to five-year-olds to have some fun in at the theatre.

Lil’ Lanterns is a Chocolate Lantern Theatre Company programme that seeks to build confidence in young children while getting their bodies moving as they explore story telling in a fun and imaginative way.

The dynamic and fun programme combines drama and fitness in an original and unique style that is geared towards teaching acting skills that are also good life skills.

Dawn Glover was inspired to create the Lil’ Lanterns programme by her love for theatre arts, pre-school education and the uninhibited imaginations and energy of three to five-year-olds.

Dawn has a Master’s degree in theatre but it was a job in children’s fitness that brought her over to New Zealand in 2013.

Though her stay in New Zealand was only meant to be for six months, Dawn fell in love with the country and decided not to return to Los Angeles.

Feel the pulse T

he students have been preparing for it since the beginning of the year and now it’s time to show off some cool moves on August 30, 31 September 1.

Pulse 2018 is the 12th year of the Botany Downs Secondary College Annual Dance production. The show consists of NCEA dance assessments across Years 11, 12 and 13.

Each assessment is assessed live and filmed.

At the beginning of each year the students and their teachers go through the curriculum and plan the genres and theme of the show.

Different year levels choose their genres and their teacher plans the show and the assessments to fit with the theme each year.

The theme this year is Dancing with the Stars, with a repertoire of Latin, jazz, hip hop, contemporary and lyrical to name a few, the performances using ultraviolet light are always fun for all ages.

Tickets are on sale at the Botany Downs Secondary College finance centre for $20 (including a free cupcake and hot or cold beverage).

360 degree views are out from hill

owick Ratepayers and Residents Association’s (HRRA) call for 360 degree views from Stockade Hill has been rejected.

Last week the long-awaited decision on Plan Change 3 (PC3) Protection of the views from Stockade Hill was released on behalf of the Auckland Council

by Independent Hearing Commissioners Robert Scott (chair), Heike Lutz and Angela Dalton.

Gayleen Mackereth, chair of the HRRA, said they were “extremely disappointed with the outcome, which did not go far enough, we believe”.

However there were compromises including a limited viewshaft and some restrictions as to property height restrictions.

According to the Commissoner’s statement: “The purpose of PC3 was to limit the height of development within identified properties in the Mixed Housing Urban zone immediately north of Stockade Hill to no more than 8 metres to ensure that views to the Hauraki Gulf (within the viewshaft arc identified) are maintained.”

“The Commissioners made a decision to ignore all HRRA’s evidence asking for, at minimum, a much wider viewshaft,” Mrs Mackereth said.

Instead the Commissioners chose to maintain this narrow viewshaft proposed by Council from Flat Island to the middle of Rangitoto.

“The Council’s landscape architect had identified the current limited viewshaft, as a narrow one from the Toposcope only, which does not encompass the wider views from the top of the hill, nor the views approaching Howick by road along Ridge Road.”

The HRRA did succeed in getting the viewing height from the Toposcope reduced to 1.5 metres (a woman’s height instead of the 1.7m man’s height proposed) but failed to get consideration of the view from a sitting position .

This viewshaft replaces the current Crawford Reserve viewshaft from the base of the hill.

zone,” Mrs Mackereth said.

“However we feel that the number of properties covered by this rule is minimal and buildings behind the front ones on the same section will still be able to go to three storeys.

“We have no protection for the views to the other volcanic cones such as Mt Eden and One Tree Hill, Mangere Mountain etc and we have no protection for the views south towards Point View Drive as Ridge Rd is zoned for 12 metre buildings though the slope of the land will provide limited protection as the land falls away.”

She said the commissioner’s reason for rejecting the HRRA’s call for 360 degree views was that there was not scope in the Unitary Plan for the 360° views under the heading of Local Public View which was the criteria used.

“We say that our heritage has been completely ignored,” she said.

“Recognising this, the Commissioners pointed out the abysmal absence of protection of heritage and historical association in the Unitary Plan.”

The Commissioner found: “There is still an issue with the appropriateness and need to maintain a 360° view and how this would be achieved in the context of the Unitary Plan provisions given that the Local Public Views overlay is focussed on coastal views and maritime context only.

“We find that there may be case for investigation of a separate viewshaft in the future based on heritage views within the region, but this would need to be sup-

ported by a full heritage assessment of such values in support of such a heritage.”

So where to from here? The HRRA is committed to pushing forward.

“We are certainly not giving up the fight. We need community support and financial commitment,” Mrs Mackereth said.

“Our lawyer praised the tenacity of Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association saying that by taking the case to the High Court, we had forced the Council to bring in a viewshaft protecting marine views and that was a win.

“He also pointed out HRRA’s excellent win with Plan Change 4 where we prevented the approach to Howick being dominated by 18 metre commercial and apartment Mixed Use buildings overshadowing the Village from Crawford Reserve to Parkhill Rd.” This area in now limited to 8 metre buildings.

“We do not have a possibility to appeal Plan Change 3 but HRRA intends to pursue the Heritage angle mentioned by the commissioner,” said Mrs Mackereth.

“A public meeting will be called as soon as we have more information to look at next steps.”

H

I am rather bemused when members of the public speak up in support of teachers demanding more pay.

Do any of them actually know what teachers get paid? I cannot recall reading in the papers or seeing it splashed across TV screens what teachers are paid.

Maybe they are well paid and want to get paid what doctors and dentists are remunerated.

We all wince when we get our bill from the dentist or doctor.

Do we demand that they should get less? Why not? My dentist charged me $665 for one hour’s treatment. Is this what the teachers want? If not, why not? If we did not have teachers teaching our future dentists, we would not have dentists.

Specsavers get behind Rickie My name is Rickie and I’m a 12-year-old ministock racer with a dream to race at every track in New Zealand. I race my ministock every weekend I can at speedways all over the North Island.

On the track I’m known as ‘Slickie Rickie’ because I am so quick and love the track to be slick and clean.

As you can imagine, racing almost every weekend costs money which is why my mum, who is part of my pit crew reached out to the upper North Island community for support through a simple Facebook post.

Specsavers Pakuranga coowner Ray Henry saw my mum’s post asking for help for the upcoming racing season and decided she wanted to help out in some way.

Ray gave my Mum a call saying she knew she needed to disposal, just tossed them over the bank.

Next heavy rain fall will wash them down the creek, the rubbish will decompose but the plastic bags will live on and eventually end up in the sea.

Come people, look after what’s left of our green areas.

I was wondering if anyone would like to run an article on a problem I am currently experiencing with Auckland Transport?

I lodged a complaint five months ago regarding the safety of the crossing at Chapel Road and surrounding areas which could be made a lot safer if they were to realign the lights but I just got brushed off with a pathetic reply this morning.

Apparently because no one has died in the last five years they don’t want to take any action to make our roads safer for our children.

I thought the local papers might be a good starting point to let the public know Auckland Transports stance on our children’s safety.

Justine ➤➤Auckland Transport’s response to Justine: Dear Justine Thank you for contacting Auckland Transport on 22 March 2018 requesting a pedestrian crossing facility for Gracechurch Road.

We apologise for the delay and appreciate your patience while we looked into this matter and provided this response for you.

We have previously investigated installing traffic signals at the intersection of Chapel Road and Gracechurch Road, but we did not continue the project due to a number of operational and design complications.

We investigated pedestrian accidents at the signalised cross-

ing on Chapel Road showing that it is operating safely, with no reported pedestrian crashes in the last five years.

Our investigation of pedestrian safety issues in Gracechurch Road also showed that there have been no crashes involving pedestrians at either the Chapel Road intersection or closer to the school.

It is possible to use the traffic island close to the roundabout to cross the road in two stages.

Whilst this may not be the favoured crossing point, it is safer for younger children as they only have one traffic movement to observe and estimate approach speed and time to cross.

We understand this may not be the outcome desired, we trust this provides clarification as to the reasons we are unable to justify changes.

We will continue to monitor this area and should anything change we will review this decision.

I use that crossing four times a day and once a week I experience cars driving through the red and in some instances I have had to take evasive action - grabbing my children to stop in the middle of the crossing while some idiot drives through the red light.

The issue is people turning right from Gracechurch drive onto Chapel road turn when the traffic stops for the crossing.

They are so quick to turn while there is a gap that they just keep driving because the wait to turn here is lengthy and people act in haste.

I can assure you, you will regret making the decision you have.

It is only adults who have prevented a major accident and I have discussed this matter with the walking school bus who also use this crossing and they have had the same experiences.

Until you realign the lights and make this safer you are sitting on a time bomb and let me assure you if an incident does occur and someone is injured I will be the first to bring out these emails and let everyone know your position on this matter.

You have pretty much told me nothing has happened so until someone is killed we will do nothing.

Shame on you, I am talking about children’s lives here not a budget.

I will leave you with this thought – would you be happy talking to a family who have lost a child while using your crossing, telling them that because in five years no one had been harmed you decided to do nothing?

Even though someone who uses it regularly tried their best to make it safer?

Think about that and if you feel absolutely at ease with that thought then fine, do nothing.

T

he Cancer Society needs your support this Daffodil Day so that together we can beat cancer in New Zealand.

On Friday August 31, more than over 12,000 volunteers will take to the streets around the country as part of New Zealand’s largest street appeal.

Every dollar dropped into their collection buckets, donated online, or in any ANZ branch, will be spent on supporting New Zealanders with all types of cancer and helping prevent future cancers through vital research.

“We have 12,000 amazing volunteers who, come rain or shine, are committed to helping the country unite against cancer. Many of them have their own personal story and wear their daffodil, not only as a symbol of hope, but to remember the loved ones they have lost to cancer, “says Mike Kernaghan, CEO of the Cancer Society of New Zealand.

Now in its 28th year, Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s largest annual fundraising event. The money raised allows the charity to provide practical support to those affected by cancer patients as well as whanau and friends.

“When someone hears that they, or a loved one, has cancer it is devastating. The impact of a diagnosis can be far-reaching. There are often so many unanswered questions and so much to consider that it can be overwhelming for everyone involved.

“It might be how they will get to hospital, where they will stay during treatment, how they will feed their pet while away from home, or who they can talk to about their cancer.”

“Thanks to the generosity of New Zealanders on Daffodil Day the Cancer Society can step up with practical and emotional support.”

The Cancer Society offers accommodation close to all major hospitals in New Zealand for patients and their carers if their treatment requires frequent hospital visits, but they do not live nearby.

During 2017, the Society provided 49,000 bed nights and drove almost 4700 patients to and from their treatment, covering more than one million kilometres.

Since the service began in 2007, the Cancer Society’s free information helpline (0800 CANCER) has had more than 95,000 calls, and its staff of cancer nurses have spent more than 4540 hours providing support and advice to Kiwis affected by cancer in 2017.

The Cancer Society is committed to reducing the incidence of future cancers through its health promotion activities and is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in the country. Yet, despite this commitment to providing needed support to people affected by cancer the Society receives no direct government funding.

Butterfly-friendly seeds The Monarch Butterfly is under threat and this National Gardening Week, Kiwis are being called upon to plant butterfly-friendly plants to help save the caterpillars when they hatch in spring and summer and provide nectar for butterflies.

Last year saw a national shortage of swan plants, the main diet of Monarch caterpillars, causing a large number of the population to be wiped out.

Yates is getting behind the drive to avert a similar crisis this year by giving away various free butterfly friendly seeds including Yates new Butterfly Field Mix seeds between October 1and 14.

On Daffodil Day tomorrow (August 31) a team at Akarana Timbers in Trugood Drive in Burswood, will step forward to have their heads shaved.

Ben Hammond, group health and safety manager at UIL, said the funds raised from this event as well as other donations raised by employees within the UIL group of companies across New Zealand will boost the Cancer Society’s work that is helping to lift the cancer survival rate for Kiwis. As of last week, staff had raised more than $22,000 with UIL matching what staff have come up with.

The head shaving, live auction and celebration of the fundraising efforts of the Akarana team takes place at their Trugood Drive premises tomorrow afternoon.

“The group has companies of various sizes from Whangarei all the way to Cromwell,” said Hammond.

Water hyacinth weed eradication underway B

iosecurity New Zealand (part of the Ministry for Primary Industries), with support from the Auckland Council, is carrying out a range of activities to control and ultimately destroy outbreaks of water hyacinth recently discovered in the Mission Heights Reserve at Flat Bush.

Water hyacinth is one of the world’s most serious and damaging freshwater weeds. It can choke waterways, badly affect water quality and it spreads very quickly.

In New Zealand it is an unwanted and notifiable organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993. This means it’s illegal to display, grow the plants or spread the plants or seed.

“Water hyacinth can be spread by people moving it from an infested site.

“We don’t want it in New Zealand and will work hard to eradicate it from our waterways,” says John Sanson, manager of recovery and pest management for Biosecurity New Zealand.

Eradication treatments of spraying and mechanical removal will be carried out during normal working hours. Any remaining water hyacinth plants will be hand removed or treated further with a herbicide.

“This is the first stage in what

Speaking at the annual Building Nations Symposium, Jones said the new entity would provide greater certainty to the industry and better advice to Ministers to ensure adequate, long-term planning and investment happens.

But Ross said the current Government is overlooking a slowdown in infrastructure construction and low confidence in the sector as it switches the national priority from road building to public transport and rules out using private money for a range of major projects.

Whitford Playcentre steps up and tackles social isolation in elderly C

hildren from Whitford Playcentre visited Gulf Views Rest Home in Cockle Bay aiming to build a relationship between the youngsters and the elderly residents.

Whitford Playcentre is a small, rural early childhood education (ECE) centre where parents who are trained in ECE attend with their children.

The children and parents decided to visit the retirement home after seeing examples from overseas about the benefits to both groups.

International research shows that social isolation and loneliness are causing health issues in the elderly population but that intergenerational friendships can improve their wellbeing, including combating helplessness and boredom, and improving memory.

Nurse manager Sue Milton said that many people don’t bring children to the home and that the Friday August 24 visit “lit up their eyes and bought joy to their hearts”.

The visit will not only benefit the Gulf Views residents … one of the

four principles of Te Whariki, New Zealand’s internationally acclaimed early childhood curriculum, states that “the wider world of family and community is an integral part of the early childhood curriculum” and that “children learn and develop best when their culture, knowledge and community are affirmed and when the people in their lives help them to make connections across settings.”

Three-year-old Cassie said: “I loved showing them my portfolio. They said that my painting was really special.”

Joshua, also three, exclaimed: “I had fun when we sung Baby Shark and did all the actions”.

Whitford Playcentre is open every weekday morning and is open for newborn to children up to six-yearsold.

Whilst based in rural Whitford, the children venture into their community a few times every term. This visit is the first of an ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with and supporting the elderly within the community.

Children and parents from Whitford Playcentre decided to visit the Gulf Views Rest Home in Cockle Bay after seeing examples from overseas about the benefits to both groups.

allabies legend Tim Horan was the special guest at Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s 13th annual luncheon and academy auction on Friday.

Horan’s humour and tales of great rugby exploits – he was in two Australian World Cup winning sides and also was in the winning Aussie side to snatch the Bledisloe Cup in the early 90s – went down a treat with the crowd of around 220.

The Steinglager-sponsored lunch raises funds for the PURC acadamies and has amassed around $250,000 over the years.

ost of us have had contact with utilities providers in respect of the provision of electricity, gas, supply of water, telephone services and what can be an increasing problem, broadband sharing and property access disputes.

Generally problems and disputes are handled well, the utility provider deals with the matter efficiently, and resolves any issues.

However there can be obstacles or complications which cannot on the face of it be resolved. This may lead to an aggrieved householder feeling that they have no alternative but to lodge a complaint with the utility provider in question.

As a first step you should contact the provider directly preferably in writing as a paper trial is important if the problem proceeds through a complaints process.

Your email/letter which should be headed “Complaint” to avoid any misunderstanding, should be clear and precise and aim at being no more than one page.

The information provided should contain the basic details of the issue, what the problem is now, and what you want the outcome to be.

Also include a date for a reply, being reasonable in the time frame.

Generally, power companies have a 20 day turnaround and the same would probably apply to other providers.

If the matter is not resolved satisfactorily then the aid of an independent third party can be obtained for a ruling on the rights and the wrongs of the issue and what should and must

be done to resolve it.

Complaints about energy including electricity, gas, LPG, solar, and EV charging stations may be referred to “Utilities Disputes Ltd” who also handle disputes over broadband shared property access between householders or tenants, and complaints about water.

The umpire strikes back... well, sort of

A

passion for the summer game, and opportunity to see things from the best seat in the house moved me to pursue cricket umpiring in 2009.

As a Howick resident I watched a lot of games at Lloyd Elsmore Park, and after hearing a radio ad voiced by Billy Bowden, I made my way to an Auckland Cricket Umpiring information evening, and the rest, they say, is history.

I started with school 1st XI games, and gradually made my way up the ladder to officiate in Premier Cricket. Spending eight hours under a hot Auckland sun took some getting used to, as did the associated sore feet. However I was soon to learn the after-match beers and banter with the club members made it all worthwhile.

As a former club player , I learnt a new appreciation for the sometimes difficult job umpires are faced with. Dealing with challenging game situations (and challenging players) became a catalyst for personal development. My people skills, man-management, temperament and focus all were developed and ultimately enhanced by time in the middle.

Like any job, you can have good and bad days. Every umpire makes bad decisions from time to time, and you really do wish the ground

would open up and swallow you.

What keeps me coming back is the desire to learn and improve from mistakes, ultimately making you a better official.

In terms of rewards, umpiring well-known faces is a highlight.

Current New Zealand players such as Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Colin De Grandhomme, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell McClenaghan can often be seen in action early in the season, turning out for their respective clubs.

International umpires Wayne Knights, Chris Brown, Phil Jones and Barry Frost started their careers in the Auckland club scene.

Nine seasons later, and umpiring has allowed me to stand in games in Auckland and Northern Districts Premier cricket, as well as provided opportunities to raise the finger in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Overseas, I have umpired a few greats of the game, including Alvin Kallicharan, Devon Malcolm, Phil De Freitas, Courtney Walsh, John Emburey and even Boris Johnson, the former London Mayor.

Umpiring on historic English countryside grounds, and prestigious schools such as Eton and Harrow, was something I could have only dreamed of.

2011 when I stood in two matches at the spiritual home of the game, Lord’s, and a day working as a reserve umpire at the Oval in London.

So as I gear up for another summer, Auckland Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association is on the lookout for new umpires. Pay scales range from $85-$115 per day.

Bioengineers create virtual 3D heart A team at the University of Auckland’s Bioengineering Institute headed by a local senior research fellow have created a virtual 3D heart that could have a major impact on treatment of the most common heart rhythm disturbance, atrial fibrillation (AF).

Dr Jichao Zhao, of Highland Park, and his international team have developed a very “intelligent” machinelearning algorithm, alias AtriaNet, that can simultaneously utilise local and global information of whole-body MRI scans to accurately reconstruct and visualise atrial geometry in 3D. AtriaNet was developed using 154 three dimensional, contrastenhanced MRI, (the largest dataset of its kind in the world), to separate atrial chambers from the rest of human body.

AtriaNet can be run on a personal computer and produce a 3D virtual heart within one minute from any new patient MRI with a high accuracy of 94 per cent.

“This advanced machine learning algorithm is way faster and more accurate than any other approaches,” says Dr Zhao.

“It will help doctors to pinpoint precise locations of diseased tissue in the upper chambers (atria) of the heart by creating a 3D virtual heart within a minute.

“Current clinical treatment is unsatisfactory mainly due to a lack of understanding of the human atrial tissue which directly sustains AF,” says Dr Zhao.

“This is a very important step towards much improved clinical diagnosis, patient stratification and clinical

guidance during ablation treatment for patients with AF.” Atrial Fibrillation, leading to an irregular and rapid heart rate, is the most common sustained heart rhythm disturbance.

At present, 25 per cent of the New Zealand population aged 40 and above will experience AF in their lifetime.

“With AF, our heart can not beat in a regular, effective fashion. Instead, it quivers, compromising the normal function of the heart to contract and pump blood throughout the whole body,” says Dr Zhao.

“More importantly, AF can lead to serious consequences including threefold increased risk of heart failure and fivefold increased risk of stroke.

In New Zealand, over 7000 people every year have a stroke, one out of five strokes in people aged over 60 years is caused by atrial fibrillation. ”The study, funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and National Institutes of Health US, is published in imaging journal IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging.

Barrett emulates Carter B

efore Beauden Barrett scored four tries and accumulated 30 points in the All Blacks 40-12 second rugby test walloping of the Wallabies at Eden Park last Saturday, Dan Carter’s Wellington test against the 2005 British and Irish Lions was considered the greatest performance by a No 10.

That day the cool-headed Carter’s master class included three tries and 33 points. He never quite reached such heights again but he went close in signing off in 2015 after New Zealand successfully defended their world crown at Twickenham.

Fittingly, Carter was named International Player of the Year that same year, an honour Barrett has claimed in the two years since.

Before Carter finished in a blaze of glory, there were many critics who claimed injuries had blunted his brilliance and that others like Aaron Cruden and Barrett deserved to start ahead of him.

At that time Barrett was the super sub, normally coming on to play at fullback and inevitably scorching over to score a try.

However so entrenched had he become as the All Blacks first-five over the past two years, the excellent Cruden, now followed by Liam Sopoaga, have taken their talent abroad in search of the big bucks.

Yet even Barrett can’t take his place for granted in the face of the

challenges presented by Crusader pivot Richie Mo’unga and Chiefs’ Houdini, Damian McKenzie. In fact Mo’unga was the outstanding player of this year’s Super Rugby championship.

However All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen remained loyal to Barrett on the basis of his greater experience although he acknowledges Mo’unga’s time will come.

Whether that will be against Argentina in Nelson after a fortnight’s break remains to be seen although the Pumas are no mugs, having beaten South Africa 32-19 last weekend.

Personally, I would like to see Mo’unga and Barrett both start, with the versatile Barrett moved to second-five or centre where Mo’unga’s subtle pass could create gaps to exploit Barrett’s pace.

However, with so many midfield candidates to choose from, that’s unlikely to happen.

A shame really because it has already happened at fullback where Jordie Barrett has replaced Ben Smith who has been moved to the right wing.

The 6ft 5in Jordie made a good fist of it too, and Smith an even better one on the wing where his vision and ability to link with his supports was so valuable.

Nevertheless, Smith remains,

he Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club is the Auckland Club of the Year.

The club won the awards for the most successful men’s club, the most successful women’s club, leading to the award for being the most successful club in the 2018 season.

Finals weekend at Lloyd Elsmore pitted the top two teams in each division against each other to claim the Division title and it was a busy day for Howick Pakuranga.

Represented in eight finals with seven of the teams winning their grades through the round robin stages, some silverware was already in the cupboard.

The weekend got off to a winning start on Friday night with the premier girls and premier boys, coached

by Black Sticks Dominic Newman and Sam Lane, beating opposition from Somerville in both finals. The boys won 2 -1 and the girls in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a draw.

This is where the future strength of the club lies and it is looking strong, a club spokesperson said.

Both teams gained inspiration from coaches who play at the highest level. They both headed the round robin competition and managed to win their finals. The championship boys team also came out

winners 6–3 in their match against Roskill Eden to win the championship B grade.

The Saturday games saw the start of the senior team finals.

The division three women’s final matched two Howick Pakuranga teams against each other. The 3A team won the round robin but were beated by a goal in the final minutes by the 3B team to end a tight match with fierce competition.

The division two women then took up the challenge playing Somerville in a game that again went right down to the wire. Tied at full time, the game went to penalty shootouts. Eight seconds with a one on one with goalkeeper and the Division 2 ladies came out winners, clinching the shootout and the title.

The division one ladies came second in the season’s table only on goal difference and were looking for revenge and bragging rights. Again, playing Somerville, they came out strongly but the game ended in a nil-all draw and it was back to the penalty shootout. The Howick Pakuranga ladies won 1–0 in front of good support from the crowd.

petition, but were up against a strong Roskill Eden team and knew that earlier season success counted for little.

After missing some early chances and going down to a couple of Roskill Eden goals, Howick Pakuranga couldn’t get enough pressure on the opposition and didn’t end the season in the way they would have liked, going down 6 -1.

Overall, this was one of the best season results that the premier men’s team has had and, with a good proportion of the team coming through the club ranks from the juniors, it is testament to the club structure and officials to have a team from the area competing at this level.

On the Sunday the men’s division four team had a great 5 – 0 victory against University to round off a suc-

cessful finals weekend.

Howick Pakuranga also won the awards for the most successful men’s club, the most successful women’s club, leading to the award for being the most successful club in the 2018 season.

Diana Dowdle accepted the silverware and thanked the supporters, officials, coaches and managers who all contribute to the club’s success.
