Botany Road will be safer and less congested, Auckland Transport (AT) says, following its proposed changes to two major intersections.

AT is seeking feedback until August on proposed changes to the Millhouse Drive and Cascades Road intersections.

The changes would see the roads widened to create new traffic lanes, improved traffic signals and road markings, high friction surfacing, a signalised pedestrian crossing and a raised zebra crossing.

Melanie Alexander, Auckland Transport’s traffic engineering manager, says a study by AT found there were long traffic delays at each intersection during peak times and pedestrian safety needed to be improved.

“The changes will deal to the significant delays motorists currently face plus there isn’t a controlled pedestrian crossing at the slip lane from Botany Road onto Cascades Road which makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross this busy road.

“We’re committed to making it safer for people to be able to walk to where they need to go in their local area.”

Teachers buckle under pressure Principals of local primary schools are deeply concerned about the crisis of teacher shortage and the increasing strain on teachers.

onsider this – a student gets into a wild rage in a classroom and starts throwing everything around including books and a pair of scissors. He starts kicking chairs and sends a desk flying across the room. The rest of the children watch, terrified. The teacher quickly evacuates the class to keep other children safe.

The student ends up smashing up the entire classroom. The teacher is stressed out by the disruptive behaviour. She can’t cope with it anymore.

In another classroom, there is a huge gap between the students with high needs in a class. There is a mix of students with a range of disabilities from speech problems to auditory processing difficulties, epilepsy and a couple of children on the autistic spectrum disorder. They all need special attention.

ever-widening chasm. “There are no teachers applying for the job,” says Mr McIntyre.

His deputy principal at Owairoa Primary, Christine Bull, says that equally stressful is the responsibility of being a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO). It gives her very little time to complete other aspects of her job. She ends up spending all her time trying to ensure that children with special educational needs and disabilities within the school receive the support they need and deserve.

“Our school is now employing 12 teacher aides, paid from locallyraised funds, to assist in classes,” says Ms Bull.

“I have to meet up with the families and try to figure out what the real problem is and then connect them to the special agencies for help. It could be that the parents have separated and the child’s routine is disturbed because he is living in more than one home. Or that the parent has major family/health issues and is more dependent on the school to look after the child.

There are so many other issues to be considered,” she says.

“The largest growing problem for children in all schools is the rising anxiety levels and it’s “a trend that is growing with children becoming distraught and anxious”.

There is a great deal of time involved in having meetings and recording all the data, she says.

“We often have to play counsellor, which is something we are not really trained for.”

She says that while inclusion is good, there is a point where the Ministry of Education needs to tell the parents that they need to put their child in a special needs environment.

“We have a policy of inclusion and

It’s important to understand that while we really enjoy having your child at school, we also have a responsibility of keeping other children safe.”

A case in point is an autistic child at school. “The child couldn’t sit still and would keep circling around the class which was very disconcerting

for the teacher and students. There were times she would get so agitated she’d snap a pencil and start chewing on it. It was inappropriate behaviour and, unfortunately, the mother wasn’t willing to work with us.

“Another child with Down syndrome once ran away from school.

Fortunately the child was found. The Ministry of Education then fenced the property around the classroom with a patch of green.”

She says that additional resourcing is needed to help senior staff as teachers are beginning to say `we are not going to deal with this’.

“There is just not enough money to run our schools,” she says.

“A lot of experienced teachers have moved house out of Auckland and for younger teachers who are just learning the ropes, it is a big ask. The quality and number of new applicants is low. It’s a huge challenge we are facing. The Ministry of Education is in a mess.

“In my opinion, our much experienced teachers would go without an increase of salary if there are better working conditions.”

Ian Dickinson, principal of Pigeon Mountain School, says the complexity of needs has increased and, with that, it is getting harder to get teachers in the classroom.

“Recruiting teachers is the biggest challenge. With the expectation and increasing demand on the teacher as well as accountability and paper work increasing, from 60 applicants for a teaching job, it has reduced to three or four,” he says.

reetops Botany is buzzing with the sound of little feet, a constant stream of questions from curious little minds and lots of laughter.

The early learning centre, formerly operating under Lollipops Educare, sits tucked away above the hustle and bustle of Botany Town Centre.

Behind bright green doors awaits the large open plan classrooms and a huge sunny balcony, with sandpits, flower gardens and colourful playgrounds.

The smell of chicken soup being made by the on-site cook wafts through the centre.

Energetic children are dotted around the centre, some drawing while others play outside and a small group eagerly following around Jet the turtle – a living reminder to the children of why protecting the environment is important.

Behind me I overhear two children reminding their teacher that plastic goes in the recycling – something they have been learning about.

All the activity makes it easy to understand why student-led and inquiry learning are a core focus at Treetops.

“We believe the best way for children to learn is through play,” says centre manager Yvette Viljoen.

“We want to teach our children how to learn, not what to learn, and this comes from us encouraging

them to pursue what they are passionate about.”

The centre’s learning programmes are based on the New Zealand Ministry of Education’s Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki.

The goal is to empower the children to be lifelong learners, says Yvette.

Treetops has been owned by the same family for 15 years and encourages a strong focus on teachers and whanau working together to facilitate a child’s learning.

“The formative years are so important for children so our focus is on giving children the strong foundation for future learning,” says Natasha Rawiri, centre director.

“Children who leave here have the confidence to move onto to primary school because they know how to ask for help if they need it, they know how to self manage and they have the confidence to make a friend or go to the toilet on their own so they can focus on their learning.”

The name, Treetops, is a constant reminder of what the centre is all about – planting roots, development and growth and also a reflection of what the centre is – supportive, nurturing and a safe shelter.

There is another Treetops branch in Botany Junction that shares the same philosophy and ownership.

Natasha says the Treetops teachers are the centre’s greatest asset and prioritise continuous professional development so the students benefit from up-to-date and innova-

tive teaching.

Recently Treetops has implemented primary care giving programme where each child has a specific teacher who can help them so they feel comfortable and confident in the classroom.

Dotted around the classroom are a dozen teachers, each with a group of four or five students.

This is another thing Treetops prioritises – smaller ratios than what is required by the Ministry of Education.

“Smaller groups per teacher means that children are getting greater individual attention, and teachers are able to monitor each child’s individual growth and indentify their strengths and areas for development,” Yvette says.

Treetops Botany is a licensed childcare that caters for up to 80 children, operating in 3 separate areas based on the children’s ages.

ast week the young people of Howick had their voices heard by the Howick Local Board.

The Howick Youth Council presented young people’s solutions to the community’s most pressing issues to local board members in a workshop last Tuesday.

The Howick Youth Council operates under the Howick Local Board to ensure voices of youth are heard and hoped bringing attention to young people’s ideas will guide the local board’s future decisions, says youth council chairperson Zachary Wong.

During the workshop the youth council handed over a set of recommendations written by local students covering issues of the environment, transport, equity, mental and physical well-being, and civic participation.

“We think it’s really important that the voices of young people are heard by our decision-makers.

We’re really excited that we’ve got a document that represents the wishes and the aspirations of young people on some really important issues affecting them,” says Wong.

“We’re hopeful that the local board will be able to implement some of the suggestions these young people have put forward.”

dents that took place at the Howick Youth Council’s annual youth summit in May. Students were given a chance to hear from experts in each of the topics, Wong says, and use this information to help guide their recommendations.

Students were also asked to vote on different commendations to determine which were most widely supported.

“These recommendations are all a true reflection of what young people in our community think and how they want to see community’s issues handled. The Howick Youth Council was just there to facilitate writing the final document,” he says.

“This is the first time we have ever worked with the Howick Local Board and recommended real change in the community.

Nothing like this has ever been done before in our area so it’s really good to hear what people

want to see happen in our community and be able to help bring that to life.”

The youth council handed over 35 recommendations to the board.

The main recommendations were: ➤ Accreditation for retailers and local companies for their commitment to reducing their environmental impact to address how businesses affect New Zealand’s environment. ➤ Address the lack of awareness and understanding of mental wellbeing by developing a community symbol, campaign or event. ➤ Provide short courses on life skills to better prepare youth for their transition into adulthood. ➤ Make civics education accessible for young people by integrating talks and discussions in schools.

Every three years, a group of local women bring together a collection of their creative quilting efforts, to showcase their talent and expertise in bed and lap quilts as well as a variety of art quilts. They also host two club challenges.

Boundary changes for ward and local board

Digging deep to plant more than 2000 natives

Changes to Auckland Council’s ward and local board subdivision boundaries are proposed under a statutory representation review required under the Local Electoral Act. The proposed changes, agreed at last week’s meeting of the council’s Governing Body, will affect how some people would vote at next year’s local body elections.

Mayor Phil Goff says the Governing Body had a “robust discussion” on the recommendations put forward by the Joint Governance Working Party.

The six-yearly review – Auckland’s first following amalgamation – is designed to ensure the public interest is fairly represented on the council as ward populations grow or change over time.

Legislation requires the ratio of population to member in a ward to vary by no more than 10 per cent from the average across the whole of Auckland.

Because of population growth, some wards do not comply with this requirement. The same rule applies to subdivisions in local board areas.

The proposed changes would mean that some people would be included in a different ward to that in which they currently live. Their local board area would stay the same, but internal subdivision boundaries of the Rodney Local Board would change, for example.

The review affects only council wards and not local board boundaries other than their internal subdivision boundaries, for those who have them. The number of councillors will stay the same – 20 plus the mayor.

The council may also review whether local board members are elected by subdivisions or across the whole of a local board area.

Public consultation starts soon.

nchorage Park School students dreamed of a native bush walk with bird feeders, weta enclosures, insect hotels and worm farms for their school. They even produced a model of what the finished transformation would look like.

Thanks to $10,000 from TREEmendous – a joint initiative between Project Crimson and The Mazda Foundation – that dream became a reality last Saturday.

Spotted digging in the rain were local Member of Parliament Simeon Brown along with MPs Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Deborah Russell, the chairperson for Environmental Select Committee Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man), shark scientist Riley Elliott and Peter Wolfcamp from The Block and singer, Boh Runga.

Mazda ambassadors Elliott, Wolfkamp and recording artist Boh Runga worked alongside teachers, pupils and parents, local community members, Mazda Foundation Trustees and the team from Project Crimson, turning an unused area on the school grounds into a dedicated outdoor learning space. They planted more than 2000 native plants, shrubs and trees to create a place of exploration.

School principal Belinda Johnston hopes that turning previous bare grass into a space where the students can learn more about ecosystems through handson experience will inspire a lifelong care for the environment in the children.

“My hope is that by being able to get stuck in and get their hands dirty, the children will understand the importance of taking care of the wonderful wildlife we have in our community.”

She also thanked staff members and the wider community.

Kleinpaste – TREEmendous ambassador and Project Crimson Trustee, says the school’s passion for the environment was

inspiring, and their strong sense of community was clear from the people that turned up on the day to help out.

Anchorage Park was the final school to be visited by the TREEmendous team this year. This event marks the 44th school to get the TREEmendous treatment in the last 11 years.

Top talent on show T

he 2018 Auckland Ice Figure Skating Championships were held at Paradice Ice Skating, Botany recently.

It was a fabulous turn out from Auckland’s greatest ice figure skating competitors. The skaters ranged in age from six years to adults and included a number of solo skaters, dance couples and synchronised teams.

The talent and skill shown by all competitors was impressive.

Soprano Kelly Harris debuts in Operatunity’s Golden Era of Musicals, coming to Botany, on Tuesday, August 7 at St Columba Presbyterian Church, 480 Ti Rakau Drive.

Making her debut in a concert that recreates the golden era of musicals, when melody was king, the rising star will perform songs from a vast repertoire, including all-time favourites from The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady.

Performing has always been “as natural as breathing” for the young soprano.

Her early years were filled with the music of Walt Disney with knowing the words to every song.

“Those movies were my whole world! Thankfully mum suspected there was something there and

put me into singing lessons.”

She recalls her first performance engagement came soon after she turned six, entertaining rest home residents with Shirley Temple’s On the Good Ship Lollipop.

“My great grandmother was a mezzo in Australia,” she says, adding, “She sang for Dame Nellie Melba who got her to study at the conservatorium in Melbourne with her own head teacher.”

When asked who her favourite artist from the Golden Era is, Kelly says: “A toss-up between Julie Andrews and Judy Garland. Both have this captivating quality that is utterly magnetising.

hatever happened to the long-gone good old days when a boxer let his fists do the talking instead of the trash spouting out of the mouths of the modern fighters?

It was sad to see a nice guy like boxer Joseph Parker follow the lead of manager David Higgins and coach Kevin Barry engaging in what looked like a terrible B-grade movie leading up to his London heavyweight fight against 18st 6lb brawler Dillion Whyte who, last Sunday, beat him on a unanimous points decision.

Two knockdowns against a Kiwi Samoan who had never hit the canvas before didn’t help Parker’s cause, although the first in the second round had more to do with an illegal head butt the referee failed to penalise.

That left Parker stunned for a few rounds. But it didn’t explain his listless effort for too many more when he blamed himself for not sticking to Barry’s game plan, whatever that was.

However he showed he could take a punch when he bravely got to his feet after being decked in the ninth with a short, powerful left hook of David Tua proportions.

Whyte continued to brawl and maul until, in desperation, Parker dropped him with a stunning right in the 12th round. Unfortunately,

or the Love of Sport was the theme of the fundraising event hosted recently by footballer Arzan Todywalla who hopes to take off on a Fusion Tour to the UK in September.

The event Let’s Rock at the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Memorial Hall had more than 150 people turn up for the evening packed with entertainment.

Most of Arzan’s family and friends, who have been watching him train intensively over the last six years including play for the Birmingham City Club, were there to cheer and encourage the player.

To raise funds for Todywalla’s international tours, the World Zarathushtrian Organisation (WZO) and Zarathustrian Association of New Zealand ( ZANZ) are assisting the family.The Saint Kentigern student is part of the developing football and Futsal junior teams in New Zealand.

In 2017, Todywalla made the Futsal Whites representing the New Zealand team in the FIFA Qualifiers, with the NZ team winning the silver medal.

In 2018 he was part of the New Zealand team which won the championship in Australia. This qualified the team to participate in the World Futsal Cup 2018 in

PURC wins Jubilee Trophy Ponsonby has won its 34th Gallaher Shield for Auckland premier club rugby supremacy.

The 35-23 final victory over old rivals University at Eden Park before a crowd of 2748 was well-deserved and reflected its hunger and ability to strike at key moments.

In all, Ponsonby now has 49 senior championships in its 144-year history.

On the back of a Waimana Riedlinger-Kapa double, 20 points by right wing Johnny Cooper and a tigerish display at the breakdown, Ponsonby now have possession of three of the four Auckland premier club trophies. Along with the coveted Gallaher, they also have the Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield and the pre-season Waka Nathan Challenge Cup in the clubrooms of their Western Springs base.

This was Ponsonby’s first appearance in the decider since 2011, when it won the last of eight straight championships.
