A

t 89, one of New Zealand’s truly great sporting icons, Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick, passed away on Saturday, mourned by a nation who loved her as much for her gracious humility as her athletic prowess.

Dunedin-born and raised before moving to Auckland, Yvette (nee Williams) was New Zealand’s first woman Olympic champion, winning the long jump in Helsinki in 1952 after no jumping on her first two attempts and only qualifying for the final three on her nerve-racking third.

That 6.24m gold medal jump was an Olympic record and only 1cm short of the world record held by Dutch legend Fanny Blankers-Koen, a mark she bettered in Gisborne in 1954 with a 6.28m leap.

Had there been a pentahlon in those days, Yvette would most certainly have emulated her long jump feats for she was the most versatile woman athlete on the globe.

She had also won the long jump at the 1950 Commonwealth Empire Games and four years later won the shot put, discus and long jump in Van-

Meanwhile, local sportsman and businessman Ron Johnson paid tribute to Yvette.

Ron, a local decathlete who won the NZ Masters Athlete of the Year Award 2018 and who has been competing in many similar events over the years, is in a similar age bracket “to the great Yvette Williams”.

Ron says he has always had a great admiration for Yvette as she has led the way as a terrific multi-disciplined athlete.

“She has been an ambassador to NZ athletics and an inspiration to both himself and other multi-athletes in the Masters age groups,” said Ron. “She can never be replaced and will stand alone with both all of her NZ records and world

Howick RSA and local police and the Howick Local Board have come up with a compromise for Anzac Day following an enormous emotive response to a city-wide ban on parades on April 25.

In a statement from the Howick RSA released this afternoon, Howick RSA president Ray Sangster announced: “Following consultation with local area police, we are pleased to announce a modified Anzac Day programme for the 6am Dawn Service and the main Civic Service at 11am, both to be held on Stockade Hill.

“Only returned and service

personnel will fall in at western end of Stockade Hill at the start of the footpath on Ridge Road and march their way to the top of Stockade Hill prior to the commencement of both services.”

Following the conclusion of both services, those attending will disperse.

There is a traffic management plan in place around Stockade Hill to ensure the safe arrival and departure of those attending the service. Following the 11am Civic Service, there will be no return march to the RSA “We acknowledge the input and understanding of our local

police and the Howick Local Board to reach this compromise,” says Mr Sangster.

A copy of the revised parade route and organisation is available from the Howick RSA on request.

A modified Anzac Day programme is at 6am and 11am at Stockade Hill.

Mellons Bay part of huge gang raid P

olice have arrested six people after executing search warrants targeting members and associates of the Comanchero motorcycle gang.

More than 80 police raided 10 properties across the Auckland region – including Mellons Bay – last Thursday.

The warrants are part of the second phase of an investigation dubbed Operation Nova, run by the National Organised Crime Group.

The first phase, on February 12, saw the arrest of five people in New Zealand and one person in Fiji, as well as the seizure of about 11kg of methamphetamine and 39kg of cocaine. They had a combined street value of more than $25 million.

As part of last Thursday’s efforts, almost $4m in assets have been nabbed including two residential properties and several high-end vehicles including several Range Rovers, a Rolls Royce and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

About $60,000 of cash and firearms have been seized, including a loaded pistol at one address, and a pistol grip shotgun and rounds of ammunition at another.

National Organised Crime Group’s Detective Superintendent Greg Williams says the operation has targeted some senior members of the Comancheros.

He says the operation has dealt a heavy blow to the Comancheros and will go a long way to reducing the gang’s influence and the social harm they cause.

“The Comancheros have established themselves in east Auckland after patched members, who were deported from Australia, established a chapter. We estimate there are currently about 20 members and associates in that chapter,” said Williams.

“Our investigation also revealed

plans to allegedly import methamphetamine, and approximately $1m’ worth of its precursor, ephedrine, into New Zealand.

The national manager of the Financial Crime Group, Detective Superintendent Iain Chapman, says police have also identified professionals including a lawyer and an accountant, who have allegedly been providing aid to the gang by helping them to setup businesses or trusts for the purpose of money laundering.

Enquiries into this are ongoing.

“The offending being alleged here generates significant cash and organised crime groups rely more and more on professionals to hide its true origin so they can benefit from the proceeds,” says Chapman.

“Professionals who aid these gangs will be held to account.”

igh frequency, rapid transit bus travel for East Auckland is a step closer with construction underway for the first stage of the Eastern Busway project.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Mayor Phil Goff have joined Auckland Transport and NZ Transport Agency officials, Mana Whenua and the local community to mark the start of construction for the first stage of the busway between Panmure and Pakuranga.

Goff says the $1.4b busway will bring congestion-free, high frequency buses to one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas.

“The Eastern Busway is a game changer for east Auckland. It will significantly reduce journey times, ease congestion, provide local residents with a modern, reliable public transport system and unlock the economic potential of east Auckland.

“Once complete, residents in Howick and Botany will see travel times by bus and train into the city slashed by up to a third and a separated cycleway will for the first time allow bike and scooter riders to travel around east Auckland safely.

“The Eastern busway is transformational for Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and beyond. We’ve been able to speed-up its construction thanks to the regional fuel tax and I look forward to continuing to hit construction milestones earlier than would otherwise have been possible,” says Goff.

Twyford says this project is a great example of central and local government working together through the 10-year Auckland Transport Alignment Project to unlock Auckland’s potential. “The work starting means we are another step closer to having a congestion-free network,” he says. ”The Government, through the NZ Transport Agency, is investing a record $3.1 billion over three years in public transport to build network capacity and improve the frequency of services.”

“AMETI will connect the growing population of east Auckland into Auckland’s strategic transport network, providing better connections, faster journey times and more travel choices,” says the Transport Agency’s Director of Regional Relationships for the Upper North Island, Steve Mutton.

The first stage will include turning Panmure roundabout into a safer, signalised intersection, construction of the busway along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road, a new bridge across Tamaki River, shared cycling and walking paths, a new reserve at the end of Bridge Street in Panmure along with improvements for general traffic at key intersections.

Major work will start at Easter at the roundabout with construction progressing along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road over a two year period.

construction phase, including additional express bus services between Howick, Pakuranga and Panmure Station, carrying out intensive work during periods of lower traffic volumes and ensuring that all traffic lanes will be maintained for the majority of work.

Future stages of the Eastern Busway between Pakuranga and Botany, including the Reeves Road Flyover, are currently entering the consenting process with construction due to start in 2022.

Meanwhile, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says he’s pleased to see construction is now under way on the first stage of the much-needed AMETI Eastern Busway.

Ross was among the people on hand this week for the first sod-turning on the project. “I’ve supported this project since we first discussed it on the Manukau City Council in 2004,” Ross says.

“This has been a long time in the making and I’m glad the local community is now seeing physical progress on this much-needed busway.”

The logical next step is to create a rapid transit busway along Te Irirangi Drive that will help to form a connection between Auckland Airport and Flat Bush, Botany, and Howick.

“It’s good to see the current Government carrying on with the work we started.

“I will keep working with Transport Minister Phil Twyford on future public transport plans for our area.”

Deserved podium for Heimgartner A

ndre Heimgartner has broken through for a podium finish at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint at the weekend.

With a third-place finish in Saturday’s race, Heimgartner secured his second Supercars podium result and his first as a solo driver (following the third place he achieved at the 2017 Gold Coast 600 as Tim Slade’s co-driver).

The #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima driver from Dannemora had started on the second row of the grid for the 120km/27 lap race after qualifying fourth and while he was jumped by his Kelly Racing team boss Rick Kelly at the start, with great car speed he was able to get that spot back through the pit stops amidst a strong race that saw him advance to the podium.

“To be on the podium on Saturday was just fantastic,” Heimgartner said.

“It is a brilliant reward for my sponsors and the entire team, and I am so happy with how it all came together.

“I was even catching the front-running Mustangs at one point there, but the safety car put paid to that.

“Even so, after struggling for the past few rounds to find balance in the cars, to finally be turning that around and have a fast car underneath me is really great.

“The points and the result means a lot for the team and the sponsors,

Howick College regional winners The Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival, Regional Competition Auckland South and East, was hosted by Botany Downs Secondary College on Saturday April 6.

All schools in the region were invited to attend and take part in the annual festival that celebrates the work of William Shakespeare. (SGCNZ) is a life skills enhancing organisation through Shakespeare. It interacts and collaborates with Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

This year Howick College entered a 15-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet directed by Head of Drama, Mrs Jilly Dryen.

The group, made up of Year 11 and 12 students, explored the age

old themes of madness, revenge and human relationships, particularly the impact Hamlet has on his beloved Ophelia.

Despite competing against an array of talented and experienced teams, the drama students from Howick College were thrilled to be announced as winners of the regional competition.

The talented actors from Howick College are now preparing themselves to take their piece to the National Festival in Wellington over Queen’s Birthday Weekend where the will compete against schools from around the country.

This is a five-day intensive programme of workshops and rehearsals that will culminate in public performances on June 2 and 3.

Come Sunday’s race, the 23 year old would unfortunately struggle with a lack of good tyres and car speed, qualifying for and then finishing the 200km/45 lap battle in 13th place while struggling with car speed.

While Sunday may not have matched the excitement of Saturday, the weekend’s results have seen the Melbourne-based Kiwi more up to 14th place in the championship with only small margins to those ahead of him on the ladder.

“After the highs of yesterday’s (Saturday’s) podium there is no doubting the fact that today’s results were disappointing – we used up a lot of our good tyres yesterday, we didn’t get qualifying right and then we didn’t have the car to move forward in the race,” he said.

“Not having the speed and especially so in comparison to yesterday was very frustrating.“ The upside is that we have moved up a bit in the leader board with the next few positions not that far away, and today still doesn’t take away from yesterday’s results, so there is still a lot to smile about.”

Heimgartner will next be on-track with Kelly Racing and the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship across May 2-4, for the Pirtek Perth SuperNight event.

Ghost in the house?

I

n this comedy, The Spirit of Annie Ross, by Irish playwright Bernard Farrell, a radio station challenges a group of four disparate people to stay overnight in a so-called ‘haunted house’ to raise money for a charity.

Each character has his or her psychological ghosts, revealing a few unlikely skeletons in their cupboards, and the night doesn’t turn out quite how any of them expects.

Sound, lighting and special effects are a challenge for the backstage crew in creating the required atmosphere of an onceloved old house with a considerable history, closed up for some 40 years, but luckily the participants in a weekend Lighting Design workshop with international designer Nik Janiurek are basing their workshop around the actual design for this play.

This will ensure a first-rate result under Nik’s watchful eye.

This play, the second of HLT’s 65th-anniversary offerings, has moments of hilarity as well as pathos, making this story thought-provoking and entertaining. Overall, it suggests that superstition definitely still survives in modern times.

Last fruit fly controls lifted The last controls on fruit and vegetables have been lifted due to there being no fruit flies detected since March 14, Biosecurity New Zealand has announced.

Biosecurity New Zealand is confident no breeding population exists.

Scout group celebrates cutter Our scout group`s family fun day was an absolute success and everybody loved it!

We had Basil Irwin come along to Christen our brand new sea scout cutter for the group, which will benefit the youth in our community for many years to come, by being a safe and capable sailing/rowing vessel which will be used to teach teamwork and water safety skills through rowing and sailing!

Basil Irwin founded the Sea Scouting division in 1960 after the group started as a normal Scout Group back in 1940.

He was an essential part in getting the group to where it is today, his time and dedication was invaluable and as a

way to say thank you and pay our respects, we couldn’t agree more to name the new cutter after him!

We had very many people turn up for the family fun day held on March 17 at Pakuranga Sailing Club.

We had lots of leaders there who had served in the group for many years, along with many family members, scout members and leaders, which made the day so awesome!

A very special thank you to Steve Sargent and Deon Steyn along with all the Howick Sea Scout Leaders & Venturers who made the event a very successful day!

This intersection is bad news Your main article on page 1 today (Times, April 4) highlights the continual problem this intersection has.

I am a local so use this road regularly usually coming from the Panmure direction.

I can categorically say that on every light change to continue up the highway we have to wait for three cars to run the red light before it is safe to move off.

On several occasions I have been quick enough to get a registration number and have reported them on the online police site.

Who knows what happens after that? It has been going on for many years but nothing ever seems to happen.

I feel really sad for Ajay and his family living under that continued threat.

Banning weapons

Isn’t it about time our beloved PM got some balance in ‘ban the guns’ mantra?

It is reported that ‘she expressed shock at how easy it is to get destructive weapons in NZ’.What about knives, cars, bombs, chemicals, even drones as seriously destructive weapons?

Are these going to be classified as destructive weapons also? For they are destructive weapons in the wrong hands.Guns are made of metal and wood, they are material, and as such have no builtin intelligence. But people do. Give them a car knife or gun and they can use it for evil purposes.

We have to confront the evil in our community in the minds of men and women. That is something aboutwhich our society is rather blind.

Evil has its origins in the supernatural realm which demands of us a thorough education renewal, especially in our knowledge of the supernatural. My plea is to tackle the evil mindset first, it would be a long term effort, not some quick-fix law change which avoids the underlying cause.

Paying it forward

I just wanted to somehow say thank you to a Howick local who gifted $30 to Poppies bookshop in Howick, which was then passed onto myself and my two children as we were shopping for friend’s birthday gifts.

We were very much overwhelmed and humbled and my six and three-year-old and I had such a rich conversation on the way home about paying it forward and helping others where we can. We are looking forward to handing over the book at the birthday party tomorrow! Thank you, whoever you are!

Save the Pigeon Mountain/ Ohuiarangi trees My son and I (are concerned) about the trees coming down on Ohuiarangi/Pigeon Mountain.

The first trees have come down today (Monday, April 8) and I wanted to follow up and say that I respect the work of the Tupuna Maunga Authority and their right to make decisions regarding the maunga.

I acknowledge their work so far but also wish to point out that it would be wrong to assume that local communities don’t have strong feelings and connections with the maunga among them.

Recently I read that Mike Smith, the protester who cut down the tree on Maungakiekie, had some regrets when he realised the connection people in the community had with that tree. It can so easily become a divisive issue when people don’t feel heard, as the Maunga Authority will know from Maori experience.

The first trees have come down, but work will take 20 days, so there is still time for compromise if the Authority can be the ‘bigger person’ in this situation. Caleb has set up a petition on change. org which has garnered over 200 signatures to date. It would be fantastic if the stronger, healthy trees could be spared for the sake of the community and the Maunga Authority could either undertake to replant areas to be felled with indigenous trees, or allow community initiatives to do this, as we now understand it, no planting is scheduled for the sites where the trees are coming down.

o celebrate Buddha’s birthday on April 6 and 7, the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush hosted a World Peace Prayer ceremony where representatives from all religions assembled to speak about peace and harmony in the world.

A large representation from the police, including the commissioner of Police Mike Bush, Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers and Area Commander Counties Manukau East Wendy Spiller, accompanied the venerable Abbess Manshin at the event that advocates harmony, diversity and a fulfilled life.

Also spotted was war veteran John Sato with Bo Burns, Minister for Ethnic Communities Jenny Salesa, Mayor Phil Goff, along with councillors Paul Young and Sharon Stewart as well as Howick Local Board member Peter Young and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross.

A host of multi cultural performances, the baby blessing ceremony as well as the dharma function was a huge draw card.

ext Thursday April 25, New Zealanders will come together as we do every year for Anzac Day, to remember and thank those who have given their lives in service to our country.

Anzac Day is a special day for all Kiwis, both in New Zealand and living abroad. It serves as a reminder of our nation’s spirit during the darkest of days and gives all of us a chance to reflect on the sacrifices which were made in order to secure the freedoms that we enjoy today.

This year, Anzac Day will carry with it an additional weight upon our shoulders. In light of the terrorist attack committed on March 15 in Christchurch, we as New Zealanders will use it as an opportunity to demonstrate just how strong and united we remain.

As a country we are still grappling with the aftermath of this

terrible tragedy and what it will mean for us as a country.

In light of the events of last month we must, more than ever, remember and have at the forefront of our minds the freedom that our Anzac’s fought and died for.

Our country is founded on the principles of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of association.

These freedoms are precious and must continue to be fought for to ensure that we not only honour the Anzac spirit, but that we continue to build a free and democratic society.

In a free society like our own the responsibility to protect these freedoms falls on every one of us. Hate speech which incites violence is a crime and never has a place in our society, however we cannot protect freedoms by unjustifiably restricting them.

All freedoms come with responsibility and no freedom exists without its limitations but in our public discourse about hate speech I am concerned that many are seeking to regulate what views can be heard and which can’t. This amounts to a form of state sanctioned censorship which we must be very careful to avoid.

This Anzac Day will be an opportunity to reflect on these freedoms and the challenges we now face as a country and how we navigate these challenges.

I strongly encourage everyone to attend both the Dawn Service and Civic Service on Howick’s Stockade Hill this Anzac Day as we reflect and look forward as a country. ➤ Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

Top road safety tips for a safe Easter holiday

The terror and hope of Easter ■ BY BRETT JONES

T

error has long been a weapon wielded by those who seek to impose their worldview on others. And when it happens to you, your family, or your people, it’s brutal and shocking. The first Easter was no exception.

It is one of the stranger appropriations across the religious world; that a belief system based on an ethic of love would adopt an instrument of execution as its central symbol. Yet, that is exactly what sits at the heart of Christian faith, the Cross, a Roman method of torture and execution that inspired fear in the detractors of its vast empire. How does a symbol of terror become a symbol of hope?

The use of crosses as a means of execution dates well before Jesus’ death over 2000 years ago in the Roman province of Judea. The most infamous of them all took place many years earlier in the wake of the revolt led by Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who was the most well-known leader in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Six thousand survivors of the revolt captured by the legions were crucified, lining the Appian Way from Rome to Capua. An act of terror which was startling in its magnitude.

It’s precisely this reaction to acts and moments of terror which make them such an effective deterrent to those who would seek to live another way.

But there is a choice. A choice which we find in the very life and death and resurrection of Jesus.

A choice we find in his teachings which will challenge us to face the anger and darkness in our own lives.

‘You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:43-44) This is a subversive message when everything in us screams for justice, maybe even revenge; when anger overflows into dismissal and hatred of others.

One of Jesus’ followers, a former terror expert, Paul, extended Jesus’ teaching in a profound way: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21) The possibility of good overcoming evil is often counter intuitive for us as we grapple with moments of horror perpetrated by what seems most naturally described as “evil”. And yet this is the way of the Cross. This is the way in which the fullest expression of our humanity blooms in

the face of terror.

It’s easy to imagine Jesus finding these words in the bucolic environment of his open air teachings. It’s harder to imagine his own experience of terror at the hands of an empire balancing the possibility of local rebellion with keeping the religious elites of the time on a short leash. But even, in this moment Jesus lived out his love as he spoke words which echo for all of us facing our own moments of terror as victims or even perpetrators.

‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’

(Luke 23:34) At that moment, the Cross became a mirror for both the darkness of humanity and the forgiveness of God. The transformation of the cross continued in the aftermath of the crucifixion with the miracle of the empty tomb and the resurrected Jesus. Today it is a symbol of hope that dares to say there is life beyond death, love beyond hate and hope beyond terror. ➤ Brett Jones, Executive member, East Auckland Ministers Association.

The key message from NZ Transport Agency, New Zealand Police and ACC is to plan ahead and follow the basics of road safety.

This year Easter Monday, Anzac Day and school holidays all fall in the same week, which means it’s likely to be extra busy on our roads, says NZ Transport Agency acting director safety and environment, Niclas Johansson.

“At any time on our roads, following these simple rules can be the difference between a safe trip or a tragic outcome: ➤ drive at a safe speed – depending on weather and other conditions this may be lower than the posted speed limit ➤ always wear a seatbelt ➤ don’t drive when tired and avoid alcohol ➤ focus on the task of driving – distractions can be deadly, so put your phone away and keep your focus on the road.

“Congestion and delays are inevitable during holiday periods, so we also want to remind everyone to leave plenty of time for their journey, drive to the conditions and plan ahead before leaving home,’’ Johansson says.

The Transport Agency predicts traffic will be especially heavy on Thursday April 18 and Good Friday April 19, and then on the return journey on Sunday April 28. ‘’Last year, we had 387 motor vehicle accident claims over the Easter period, a substantial increase from the previous year of 312,’’ says ACC’s chief customer officer Emma Powell,

‘’and this year the risk will be higher with busier roads.

“It takes everyone on the road to make it safe and look out for those most vulnerable – such as motorcyclists and young drivers (aged 16-24).

Young drivers were injured in almost a third of motor vehicle accidents last Easter, so this group needs to be extra vigilant. ACC’s advice is to be aware of the increased number of vehicles around you as this can create challenging driving conditions and pay extra attention in rural areas, where roads can be more demanding.

“Planning your journey, driving within your own capabilities and adjusting for the driving conditions are key to your own and other road users safety,’’ says Powell.

“During holiday periods when the roads are busier than usual, the risk of drivers making mistakes that result in injuries or deaths increases,” says Inspector Peter McKennie, manager operations National Road Policing Centre.

“Over the holiday period from 4pm Thursday April 18 to 6am Tuesday April 23 – if you’re detected by a safe speed camera exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 4 km/h, you will be ticketed.

“Police will be out on the roads doing our bit to keep people safe, but it’s critical that everyone takes responsibility for the safety of themselves and other road users.”

ore local artists than ever are exhibiting their Easter Art at the 2019 Word on the Street exhibition.

Creative people from around Howick and the greater Auckland area are showcasing their talents as part of an Easter Art exhibition over the Easter weekend. Over a third of the artists in 2019 are newcomers to the Easter exhibition which is in its 13th year.

One of the newcomers in 2019 is inspiring Auckland artist Anita Mary, fresh from her Overcome Exhibition at the Papakura Art Centre in December 2018 (www. anitamary.com).

Anita Mary has been painting fulltime since 2012. Struggling with chronic pain and mental health challenges, she has discovered that Art is not only therapeutic but is also a tangible medium through which to share the possibility of hope. Since 2012 she has been involved in many exhibitions alongside her own solo exhibitions, Metamorphosis, Matters Of The Heart, Awoken and most recently, Overcome. Anita Mary will be exhibiting her work at the exhibition and sharing some of her journey through art at “The Artists Speak” event on Saturday 20 April, 7pm.

Artists will share about their art within the exhibition gallery as part of an evening of art, music, canapes and light refreshments.

Howick artist, photographer and art tutor, Keryn Bloxham, is returning to the exhibition in 2019 (www.kerynbloxham. com). Keryn is well-known for her work painting landscapes and animals. Much of her work evokes a distinctly spiritual point of view.

This year’s piece combines these elements in a uniquely New Zealand seascape using found items as she takes her palette to a wooden pallet!

“The prevailing remark I hear from people who have bought my art or photography is that when they look at them, they feel peace,” says Mrs Bloxham.

Preparations have been underway for the past nine months as artists have worked together on developing the theme for the exhibition and the gallery design. The exhibition is displayed within a thematically-driven “theatrical” style set designed by the Stations project

team and intended to add colour and ambience to attendees’ journey through the Easter art.

“This year’s exhibition Word in the Street will offer a range of artistic pieces from the more traditional art forms to the offthe-wall and creative. “We’re expecting painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media artists and poets – all reflecting on the universal themes of the Easter story – betrayal, shame, guilt, injustice and perhaps most importantly, hope. Our unique gallery design this year will invite people into a gritty urban environment that reveals Jesus’ journey to the Cross at a street level,” explains exhibition curator Brett Jones.

The 13th annual Stations of the Cross Easter Art Exhibition Word on the Street will be held at the Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park across the Easter weekend from 6pm on Good Friday, April 19 until 2pm on Easter Sunday

April 21. The event is being run

The exhibition’s opening hours have been extended in 2019 across three days to allow more people to view the popular exhibit. An artist reception has been scheduled for Saturday evening from 7pm, where artists will share the stories behind their art.

A Good Friday service will run in the exhibition space from 5.30pm on Good Friday making for a uniquely rich Easter service experience.

The exhibition will also offer a well-priced pop-up café onsite providing a venue for people to spend time in a relaxed environment responding to the Easter art experience.

Sunrise service has returned The combined churches Easter Sunrise Service is back for another year.

The Easter Sunrise Service has been held every year since 1996 starting off with a handful of churches.

This year the service will have most of the churches in the Howick ward taking part, gathering on Stockade Hill where many important early church and civic events were held.

The public service will begin at 6.30am on Easter Sunday April 21 and welcomes anyone who wishes to attend.

They don’t know that it’s a legal requirement for an employer to provide their employee with a

Fox and star cast interpret ‘Bird’ Parker’s classic work ■■By PJ Taylor

odger Fox is New Zealand’s king of big band jazz, but his latest musical project fuses the instruments of the classical domain with those of the jazz arena to present a modern interpretation of a famous work by legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker.

Fox is touring Charlie Parker With Strings, recordings originally made by “Bird” Parker back in 1949-50, and the only Auckland show plays out at Howick’s Uxbridge Arts and Culture centre this Easter Saturday, April 20.

Headlining musical director Fox’s cast of top-quality musicians for the concert is Dick Oatts, a New Yorkbased saxophonist who’ll be playing alto, alongside the New Zealand String Quartet and Jazz Ensemble.

“Charlie Parker With Strings place Parker in the context of a small classical string section and a jazz rhythm section, rather than his standard bebop quintet,” Fox says.

“The jazz and classical worlds find common ground. Swinging rhythms with lush strings and a twist of bebop.

“They were Parker’s most popular sellers during his lifetime, and were admitted to the Grammy Hall of

Internationally-acclaimed saxophonist Dick Oatts has travelled from New York to star in Rodger Fox’s live presentation of famous jazz-classical music recordings, Charlie Parker With Strings.

Fox, a world-class trombonist who has been one of New Zealand’s leading jazz players, band leaders and teachers for more than four decades, has staged many different styles of shows during his illustrious career and Oatts is the latest of nearly 100 jazz stars that Fox

has brought to these shores.

“Dick Oatts combines with a rhythm section, string quartet and two woodwind players to recreate this series of musical arrangements, as well as adding new arrangements of Parker’s bebop era,” Fox says.

Oatts’ international standing is best qualified as the featured soloist in the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra from the late 1970s, and he still holds down that role in the present day incarnation, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

“He’s accompanied such vocalists as Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, and Milton Nascimento. He’s also recorded solos for Luther Vandross and Everything But The Girl,” Fox says.

Construction Sector Accord will promote strong, healthy industry P

ublic and private collaboration on the Construction Sector Accord and bi-partisan support for the establishment of the Infrastructure Commission will deliver major benefits for infrastructure and construction outcomes if cooperation can be sustained, says Infrastructure New Zealand CEO Stephen Selwood.

“The Construction Sector Accord announced today (Sunday, April 14) aims to transform the way the government and the construction industry work together and that transformation can’t come soon enough.

“Uncertainty, skills shortages, injuries and contracting issues are making the construction sector a less attractive, productive and effective part of the economy.

That’s bad for everyone, not least of all the Government because of the direct role construction plays in delivering public services. “ The Accord signals recognition that clients have a major impact on the way the industry behaves.

What everyone wants, he says, is a healthy construction industry which competes across itself to deliver value, rather than competing with its clients.

“That the Accord has been signed in the same week that legislation to establish the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga (NZIC), attracted support from all political parties is especially pleasing,” says Selwood.

The NZIC will provide independent advice to the Government on infrastructure strategy and provide procurement support. It will develop a long-awaited pipeline of public works which will give the industry greater clarity over future infrastructure programmes, priorities and investments.

“This forward work programme is essential to providing the market with the confidence to invest in the skills, systems and equipment which are desperately required to improve New Zealand’s construction productivity,” he says.

“But it must have bi-partisan support to succeed. New Zealand’s thee-year election cycle is too short for any one Government to reshape infrastructure policy.

“There needs to be broader understanding and agreement over the long term opportunities and challenges so that, even if projects change in the short term, we as a country do not lose sight of the

But for St Kentigern College student Shalom Broughton, this was his reality.

The 17-year-old basketball player was selected for a basketball training camp with New Zealand-born NBA basketball player Steven Adams.

The camp is part of Maori Television’s new series Holding Court, which follows NBA star Steven Adams as he coaches and mentors Kiwi kids.

owick Pakuranga cricket celebrated the end of a huge season at the Auckland Cricket prizegiving winning four major trophies.

The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premiers won both the Hedley Howarth Cup for the Two Day Championship and the Jeff Crowe Cup for the Limited Overs competition as well as finishing third equal in the T20 Tournament.

Coach Alan Hunt was also recognised as Club Coach of the Year, well-deserved recognition of both his coaching and man management skills.

The high point of the night was the announcement that Howick Pakuranga won the Overall Club Championship as the best performed club right through the grades ranging from the children right up to premier men and women. This is the second year the club has won this trophy in succession and this result can only be down to the many hours of hard work by volunteer coaches, managers and committee members backed up

by an excellent coaching program.

Some players had outstanding seasons and were recognised at the senior club prizegiving: Daniel Young took the Premier Batting trophy with an impressive 899 runs for the season and a top score of 135.

Donovan Grobbelaar with 379 runs and 32 wickets won the All Rounders Award and Danru Ferns with 39 wickets had an outstanding season. Natasha Van Tilburg scored the most one day runs with an aggregate of 619 runs for the season and was also recognised as Premier Women’s Player of the Year. Alyssa Bowden took 26 wickets to win the award for premier women’s bowler.

There were also four winners in the Auckland Cricket Club section: Natasha Van Tilburg became the first Howick Pakuranga Premier Woman to win the historical Nessie Hammond Cup for batting in Premier Women’s grade. The Premier Women also won the Stringfellow Cup as the most improved premier team in their grade.

It’s a great shame for a brave, adventuresome, versatile player who goes where angels fear to tread. Fortunately Ben Smith also remains a great fullback and Jordie Barrett has the ability to become one.

ick Pakuranga has many. The Peter Guest Memorial Trophy went to Claire Scragg, Nicola Troughear won the Presidents Cup and Ted Waters the Frank Hughes Memorial Trophy.

All three awards were welldeserved and their names join an illustrious list already on these trophies.
