Waiheke Island’s 9000 residents could be without the internet for several days, after a fibre-optic cable connecting the island was damaged, Stuff has reported.

Network company Chorus said about 4000 homes and businesses on the island lost access to fibreoptic and copper broadband services on Monday at about 3pm.

Testing by Chorus technicians found a fault in the Vector submarine cable to Waiheke about 1.5km out to sea from the beach on the Howick side of the harbour, Stuff said.

A new playground for residents of Flat Bush’s Donegal Glen development has been given a $40,000 head start.

“Hugh was a well-known landowner in our area and we are delighted the generosity that was so much a part of his char-

acter has been continued in his honour,” Mr Collings says.

Mr Green arrived from Ireland and began farming before entering the construction industry.

He died in 2012 but his charity work continues today through the Hugh Green Foundation.

The donation has allowed a planned footpath to be converted into a balance-bike track with raised humps, providing a space for young children to learn to ride that is also suitable for scooters, trikes, strollers and wheelchair-users.

School receives funds to improve popular walking route over bridge The Howick Local Board area’s newest school, Te Uho o te Nikau Primary in Flat Bush School Road, has had funding of $1 million ring-fenced to improve safety for children walking to school.

Board members agreed the money needed to be set aside for a project to improve safety

on a narrow bridge without footpaths that the children must cross.

Board chair David Collings says Auckland Transport will soon release details of a fund it will have available for road safety improvement projects, and the bridge was a “no-brainer”.

“We have talked about a vari-

ety of projects to help Te Uho o Te Nikau and, although no decisions have been made, we have earmarked $1 million of our Transport Capital Fund as a reserve for future delivery of the project, and we will investigate using the Regional Safety Fund in June.”

J

acinda Ardern visited Howick over the weekend for one very special reason.

The Prime Minister was here to meet John Sato, the 95-year old Howick war veteran who received global recognition for his efforts to attend an anti-racism rally in Auckland.

The pair shared a heartfelt embrace when they met.

Sato thanked Ardern for leading the country through such a tragedy and Ardern thanked Sato for going to such great lengths to stand up against racism.

Ardern told the Times she was overwhelmed by Sato’s story.

Sato, one of only two Japanese servicemen in the New Zealand army in World War II, felt compelled to show his support for the Muslim community following the Christchurch terror attacks.

Sato left his house on Sunday morning, March 24 to visit a mosque in Pakuranga before deciding to go into Auckland City centre for an antiracism march.

In a photo that has since caught the attention of people across the world, Sato is seen flanked by a police officer and a member of the public as they fall behind the March.

Ardern said the photo was so powerful, she found herself coming back to it over and over again.

She said meeting Sato was a privilege and that he is an inspiring reminder of kindness, love and courage.

The last few weeks, Ardern says, have made her immensely proud of New Zealand and the way communities across the country have come together.

Sato briefly addressed the crowd and said, ““What I’ve seen since that

Arden later shared a tribute to Sato with her 596,000 instagram followers.

“Thank you John,” she wrote. “Your actions warmed the hearts of so many during a time of such sadness.”

Anzac parade called off, service still on H

owick’s Anzac Day parades have been cancelled following police requests however “static services” will still go ahead.

Howick RSA has advised that the NZ Police have requested that all Anzac Day parades be cancelled in light of the terror attacks in Christchurch which claimed 50 lives.

“The threat level remains high

and marching parades may make a tempting target,” the RSA note said.

“To adequately cover all Anzac events, the NZ Police prefer a static service without marching.”

The Howick Local Board, along with the Howick RSA, have agreed to cancel the Dawn and Civic Parades but stress that the Dawn and Civic Commemoration Services on Stockade Hill will still proceed at 6.05am and 11am

respectively.

“Groups attending should gather on Stockade Hill at the entrance to the cenotaph area from where they will be directed to their assigned position,” the note said.

Pigeon Mountain restoration begins W

ork starts this month on a programme to restore native vegetation and habitat for native wildlife on Ohuiarangi [Pigeon Mountain] in Half Moon Bay. Around 112 exotic trees, including pest species, will be removed and more than 30,000 new native shrubs and trees will be planted in selected locations.

It became known as Pigeon Mountain in early European times for the numerous Kereru or native pigeon that lived on the mountain, and the planting programme will include tree and plant species that are hoped will encourage Kereru back to the mountain in the future.

From April 8 arborists will begin the tree removal, which is expected to take around twenty days to complete.

From May to August this year 500 native shrubs will be planted on the summit terraces and another 1200

native shrubs and trees around the quarry slope areas of the mountain.

Some of the 30,000 new native shrubs and trees being added around the wetland ecological area on the western side of Pigeon Mountain Road will be planted this Autumn, and the remaining over 2020-2021.

Paul Majurey, chair of the Tupuna Maunga Authority, says that reestablishing indigenous flora and fauna and restoring the authenticity of the historic mountain sites across Auckland is a long-term goal.

“Native vegetation is one of the natural features of the [mountain] that has diminished over many decades, replaced by an increasing number of exotic species. This programme of work will have important long-term ecological benefits for the [mountain].”

“This restoration is very much about restoring what we can of the original ecology while also giving

prominence to and maintaining historic features,” says Majurey.

No existing native, scheduled or protected trees will be removed.

The new plantings will be carefully positioned to enhance sight lines to and from the summit.

Terrace planting will take a nondig approach to avoid ground disturbance.

Pigeon Mountain will remain open to visitors throughout the works but people are asked to avoid areas where arborists are working.

For three days in mid-April Pigeon Mountain will be completely closed while a helicopter is assisting tree removals. Signage explaining the project and temporary closures will be at entrance points.

Students and staff participated in the nationwide ‘I am Hope’ Gumboot Friday event for mental health.

New Zealand of the Year, Mike King is the face of the campaign and says “Having depression is like walking through mud every day. So on Friday 5 April 2019, we’re asking you to show your support. Put your gumboots on, give a gold coin, and take a walk in their shoes for just one day.”

Gumboot Friday is a fun way for kiwis to join in the mental health conversation, while raising money to provide free and timely counselling for any kid in need.

Justine Driver, Sunnyhills Principal, says the day was a huge success. “We were thrilled with the Sunnyhills community support raising $528.60 for this worthy cause,” she says.

“Promoting well being for all and developing the whole child is part of the special character of Sunnyhills School.”

TVNZ’s New Blood innovative initiative is redefining feminism on-screen with Butt Dial web series, a microseries that is written and directed by Anna Duckworth of Candlelit Pictures.

The series was produced by Pakuranga’s Sandani Hiranya.

“Audiences have demanded fresh content and diverse representation that breaks apart false, archetypal depictions of women and that is exactly what Butt Dial will be delivering,” Candlelit Pictures, a Kiwi film production company, said.

“This all female cast, crew and production, directed by Duckworth during the third trimester of her pregnancy, is an ode to modern feminism.”

Bridge safe after crash M

angemangeroa Gorge Bridge on Whitford Road has been declared safe after a concrete mixing truck went over the barrier last Thursday afternoon and landed in the gorge below.

Police and emergency services were called after the truck rolled and went down the bank at around 1pm. The driver of the truck and only occupant of the vehicle was transported to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries.

Part of the road was closed for several hours and diversions were put in place.

The truck hit the bridge handrail and Auckland Transport said a structural assessment of the handrail was undertaken.

The handrail was strengthened last year so that it could withstand an impact loading such as the truck crash on Thursday.

A Beca structural inspector visited the site on Tuesday.

“His observation is that the damage only exists on the steel barrier and the parapet,” says AT spokesperson Mark Hannan. “[The] bridge appears undamaged. Some cracks and loose concrete were observed on the parapet on the outer face. Some barrier posts will require replacement.”

A 30 km/h speed limit has been imposed on the bridge and approaches, so that vehicles can continue to use the bridge.

he sun was shining and the colour stations were set for the first ever Botany Downs Primary Colour Fun Run on Sunday.

The whole community came out in full force, starting out with a sea of crisp white t-shirts and ending in a rainbow of colours.

With some help from local Howick firemen, runners were sprayed with fire hoses before making their way around a 1km colour course through the school, which included a lap through the nature garden.

Participants had to navigate fun obstacles such as a maze with a foam cannon, a spider web rope and hula hoops.

They also had to run through five colour stations where they were splattered with coloured powder.

A rainbow of colour principal, Mr T, were game enough to run the gauntlet and get heavily doused in powder by the students which was a highlight for all.

The day concluded with a spectacular grand finale colour throw where the whole crowd threw a rainbow of colours into the air.

The day was filled with entertainment from local fitness and dance groups, including flossing competitions from the students.

Amazing raffles and spot prizes were won thanks to generous sponsors who donated to the event- most were from local businesses who wanted to support the school.

National Erebus Memorial design has been selected A design that includes a walkway projecting outward to the horizon has been selected for the new National Erebus Memorial after recommendation by a design selection panel.

Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh, an aviation chaplain and historian, is the national memorial spokesperson.

The design was announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Friday.

“I’m pleased to announce the design Te Paerangi Ataata - Sky Song, by Wellington firm Studio Pacific Architecture jointly with designer and artist Jason O’Hara and musician Warren Maxwell, has been selected,” she said.

“The design reflects the enormity of the tragedy and provides a strong sense of connection and loss. The design has a strong narrative to engage visitors and provides a sanctuary within its walls, evoking the great emptiness experienced for those who lost their lives.

“As the memorial is created, some 257 stainless steel snowflakes will be cut out and given to the families, connecting them to the site and providing a symbolic keepsake that can be passed on to others.

“The design was chosen after feedback from family members of those who died, those who worked on the recovery operation and in consultation with Auckland Council.

“My sincere thanks to every-

one involved in the process to select the design; we had some fantastic submissions. Planning for the memorial’s construction can now begin with the unveiling timed for May 2020,” Ardern said.

Mayor Phil Goff welcomed the progress being made on building the memorial and said it was long overdue.

“With Flight 901 having left from Auckland and many of those on board residents from our city, it is appropriate for the memorial to be built here.

“It has been important to work with the families of the Erebus victims and wherever possible take on board their wishes.

“The memorial in Dove-Myer Robinson Park, overlooking the Waitemata, is in a beautiful setting, which I hope will provide comfort and solace to those who lost family and friends on Erebus,” Goff said.

The design team at Studio Pacific Architecture are honoured to contribute to the making of this special place of remembrance for those who lost their lives.

“It is a privilege for us to contribute towards a memorial experience that captures their adventurous spirit,” Studio Pacific Architecture founding director Nick Barratt-Boyes said.

The final design and details of the finalist design teams are on the Ministry for Culture and Heritage website.

A team of singers, musicians and film crew have been going full steam ahead to release the song along with a music video in hopes of raising awareness and money for the Stockade Hill views cause.

he fight to save Stockade Hill views now has a catchy tune.

Howick songwriter Tony King has written a song about the longstanding battle to save the iconic views that can be seen from on and around Stockade Hill.

Inspiration struck one day as he found himself thinking about the view out to the Hauraki Gulf and what it would be like if one day it was gone. Now King and a team of singers, musicians, and film crew have been going full steam ahead to release the song along with a music video in hopes of raising awareness and money for the cause.

The song is called ‘Standing on

Stockade Hill’ and the collective of performers who brought the song to life are called “Stock Aid”, King says, in a nod to Band Aid. “The song is really my personal viewpoint of losing the magnificent views we have as we drive passed Stockade Hill coming in to Howick.

But it could be anyone’s viewpoint or for that matter all of us collectively,” he says.

The music video is based around scenes shot in the studio with the various singers/musicians involved, some behind the scenes shots.

There’s just one more shot to get before the song can be released, and they need your help.

“We need a crowd to sing or pretend to sing the very lines [“Standing

up on Stockade Hill is special to us all” and “No, leave our views alone”] along with a ‘fist pump’ on the word no,” he says.

“The bigger the crowd the more the impact.”

So this Sunday, April 14, at 1pm the community are invited to join the crew on Stockade Hill to take park in the music video filming.

You don’t need to be a good singer to take part, and people of all ages and walks of life are welcome.

A lot has happened so far this year politically. I’m pleased to see New Zealand’s gun laws are being reformed in the wake of the horrific terror attack in Christchurch on March 15.

Hopefully these changes will make our country safer.

It’s also good to learn $10.5 million is being invested to expand Middlemore Hospital’s acute mental health unit, Tiaho Mai, which will enable it to accommodate 76 patients.

I’m a huge advocate for the exceptional and difficult work the unit’s staff do.

I’ve seen their skill and compassion first-hand, and they deserve more resources to help those in need.

It’s disappointing, however, that the Government is yet to announce what changes it will make to the sector more than four months after it received the report stemming from its inquiry into mental health and addiction.

improve people’s access to primary mental health care and also to remind Kiwis of all ages that it isn’t weak to ask for help when they need it.

Don’t try and ‘fix’ history The ever-offended of Generation Snowflake have now set their sights on the Canterbury Crusaders – seeing their name as politically incorrect.

The ‘Crusaders’ stand for a righteous struggle. ‘Knight’ imagery is meant to characterise chivalry and nobility. Knights are supposed to fight for and protect the weak... surely the exact values one would wish to support and promote?

Some imagery derives from the religious crusades of the Middle East. But people conflate this struggle with the recent tragedy in Christchurch; the only real link is victimology.

“The Crusades” are not synonymous with an oppressive Western culture; rather they were the victims.

The typical thinking about the Crusades is focused on a small segment of the struggle; those of around the 13th Century when armies from Europe tried to reclaim the Jewish and Christian “Holy Sites”

and to protect the rights of pilgrimage. Remember that these religions started in Jerusalem and their origin was taken from them and desecrated.

But the Crusades actually started long before that and continued long after. The Crusades started when Islamic forces invaded Spain in about 711.

The invading Islamic Omayyad (or Umayyad) Empire dominated Spain for hundreds of years - the caliphate was the 5th largest empire in the world at the time.

The huge majority of battles were fought on European soil. For hundreds of years, Islamic expansion continued with imperialistic, aggressive incursions into Europe, right to the gates of Vienna.

In a classical sense, the final victory was not achieved until the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The survival of Western civilisation, as we know it, is, in part, due to the survival of Europe.

An unnecessary change in the Crusaders’ name due to a misplaced sense of political correctness and a poor understanding of history is unwarranted.

It should be with some pride and appreciation that we regard the values arising from the concepts of chivalry, nobility and fighting for the dispossessed.

When we look back on history, look at what has been achieved rather than constantly looking for guilt. We should learn from, rather than try to ‘fix history’ – by obliterating any symbols, or records, of things we choose to be offended by.

he view on Point View Drive is great unless you look down at the ground.

Many responsible people use the spot on Point View Drive to relax and enjoy the view, leaving nothing behind.

Others, however, are drinking alcohol, abusing drugs, smoking and engaging in public sexual activity there: leaving the evidence behind.

The rubbish, illegal dumping, and partying is an ongoing issue that the locals have been dealing with. Police are very aware of the situation and have increased patrols in that area.

This is a complicated location as it is a combination of privately owned vacant land and Auckland Transport council berm and footpath.

Local residents say they have complained to council numerous times, including bringing it to the attention directly to local board member, Mike Turinsky as well as to whole Howick Local Board at a “Talk to the Board session”.

There is not a simple solution, but it might include Auckland Transport, council facilities, the owner of the property and local residents together.

For now, what we can do is get together to take the existing rubbish away.

That’s something we can do now whilst the other elements are investigated.

In total we filled 64 bags of rubbish.

We spoke to the individual and advised them that living in a tent at that location was a breach of the Public Safety and Nuisances Bylaw, and asked them to relocate.

“If they do not move on, we will apply our graduated enforcement process to resolve the matter. In the first instance, we try and achieve compliance with the bylaw by providing advice and education.

We are not aware of the individual also sleeping in their car.

When we’re aware of people sleeping rough we have an established system of notifying outreach workers.

Our primary concern is always the well-being of the people involved.

Sunday night (April 7) saw more than two hours of exciting, top quality guitar music, staged by Auckland Guitar School at the Uxbridge Theatre in Howick.

The Howick-based guitar school’s little Gig concert showcased a diverse range of performers playing everything from George Ezra and Ed Sheeran through to Pink Floyd and Cream.

The set also boasted a number of original songs performed and sung by their composers.

In all, it was an exceptionally professional and entertaining show with some stunning performances played to a sold-out audience.

A new yoga programme starts at Uxbridge this month and is kicking off with a free session. It’s called Gentle Yoga, and is perfect for older practitioners or those that are recovering from an injury or who have not practiced recently.

Juliet Slogrove, who teaches the class, says Yoga does not have to be about how successfully you can tie yourself into a pretzel or how long you can hold the posture.

“Gentle yoga is about deepening your connection with and coming home to your own body,” she says. “[It’s about] taking time to explore body and breath moving together through slow, gentle rhythms. Turning inwards and taking the time to notice and feel, ultimately restoring balance in life.”

Pakuranga United Rugby Club Premiers pulled a trick out of the bag to clinch a 26-21 win against a fiery Papatoetoe on Saturday.

The win, secured two minutes after the final whistle, gives Pakuranga two wins from two starts, says PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini, it could have ended so differently.

The Access Solutions Prems held a comfortable 21-7 lead at half-time too.

“We were confident but still had to go through with some hard work,” said Alatini.

“Our first half was very good, really clinical... we played according to the game plan.”

It began to crumble in the second half.

“We were our own worst enemy in the second half and made crucial errors.

f there were any doubts soon to be 37-year-old Ma’a Nonu was too old to play in this year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan, he quashed them at Eden Park on Saturday with a brilliant performance in the Blues’ gripping 32-29 Super Rugby win against the Waratahs.

Not only did he set up two tries with slick passing, but sprinted 43m to score one himself and added a 55m wipers kick into the corner to put his team on attack.

Nonu and Dan Carter joined captain Richie McCaw and several other All Blacks in bowing out of international rugby upon being the first team to successfully defend the Webb Ellis Cup in 2015 with a 34-17 win against Australia.

It was a much more convincing World Cup finale than the nervous 8-7 one whitebaiter Stephen Donald clinched with a penalty in 2011 against France at Eden Park when injuries had previously sidelined top first-fives Carter and Aaron Cruden.

A major reason for the

resounding 2015 triumph was the outstanding form of Nonu and International Player of the Year Carter who rose to the occasion after an injury-plagued build-up had hid his talent.

However loyal head coach Steve Hansen, a great believer in experience, never doubted Carter’s ability and was richly rewarded for his faith.

The odds are he also won’t close his eyes to 103-test veteran Nonu’s claims after his stunning performance against theWaratahs.

Up until then the smarts and toughness remained.

But his lack of genuine pace was exposed in the first game of this Super Rugby season when speedy Crusaders centre Braydon Ennor twice swerved around him.

With Nonu sharing Blues second-five duties with Sonny Bill Willlams, there is no shortage of quality All Black midfield candidates beyond the Blues pair.

Ryan Crotty and Anton Lienert-Brown combined superbly when filling the

vacancy left by Nonu and Conrad Smith’s international retirement.

Both are fine all-rounders with few weaknesses and Lienert-Brown has an uncanny ability to unload passes which reap tries from tight situations.

Crotty, 30, and nuggety 98kg 23-year-old Jack Goodhue have formed a strong combination for the champion Crusaders with Crotty’s passes being a major factor behind the team’s latest 36-14 humbling of the Brumbies.

But for incredible try-scoring ability, no midfield back in the country can match 25-year-old, 97kg Hurricanes cannonball Ngani Laumape.

With such depth available, sorting out the best centre partnership for World Cup

duty remains one of the toughest tasks facing the selectors.

The other, with Sam Cane recovering from a broken neck, is sorting out the No 7 berth.

Brave and tough, the fearless Cane has been good value. But the clever Todd and especially the athletic Ardie Savea pose a serious challenge.

With two glorious tries in the Hurricanes 33-28 Dunedin thriller against the Highlanders, Savea fully illustrated his incredible talent and made a wonderful try-saving tackle beyond the scope of most forwards.

Although only 97kg, he punches well beyond his weight with his strong leg drive and is playing the best rugby of his career.
